In ancient Bible times they may have known more about healing ointments than we do with all the modern medical discoveries! We have all heard of the “Balm of Gilead,” even written songs about it, but very few know what it is composed of.
One day in a little shop in Bethlehem I asked the Arab owner if he knew anything about it. “Oh, yes,” he replied, “it is still used in the Middle East and the basic formula is in the Bible!” Sure enough, he turned to Genesis 37:25 and there it was: “SPICERY,” which is described in other versions and also in the Bible Encyclopedia as “AROMATIC GUM, BALSAM, TRAGACANTH, LADANUM and MYRRH.” And, now, our Christian Arab partners have actually recreated the Biblical “BALM OF GILEAD”! Jan says it is a great facial cream for ladies and the Arabs say it is a soothing ointment for the skin.
