"IN THE BEGINNING WAS THE WORD, AND THE WORD WAS WITH GOD, AND THE WORD WAS GOD. THE SAME WAS IN THE BEGINNING WITH GOD."St. John 1:1, 2
Can you believe it? Another glorious Christmas season is upon us! How we love this old, old story — we never grow tired of its wonder and amazement though we have heard it many times.
But, there is always something new, and as I read and studied our theme Scripture of St. John chapter one, a new truth hidden in the Greek language amazed me!
We have always understood the "WORD" to be Jesus Christ, Son of the living God. John makes that very clear in verse 14:
"AND THE WORD WAS MADE FLESH, AND DWELT AMONG US, (AND WE BEHELD HIS GLORY, THE GLORY AS OF THE ONLY BEGOTTEN OF THE FATHER,) FULL OF GRACE AND TRUTH." St.
What amazed me was a feature of the Greek language that is totally lost in the English translation. The Greek scholars (one of which I am not) call it the "definite article." Follow carefully and a glorious new truth will bless you as it has me! It will also prove a facet of the Holy Trinity, and while knowledge of the Trinity is largely a mystery, it helps prove the distinction between Father and Son.
I know we have tried with various examples to explain the Trinity. Water, for example, can be manifested as a liquid, a solid (ice), or a gas (steam). And yet all three are still water. Of course, any illustration falls far short of explaining how three can still be ONE! But here in St. John, the Greek language gives us a clue. Watch this:
"IN THE BEGINNING WAS THE WORD…." (St. John 1:1)
From verse 14 we clearly understand this "WORD" to be Jesus Christ. But the next sentence shows us the missing "definite article" in the Greek:
"AND THE WORD WAS WITH [THE] GOD…."
Our English translation simply says, "WITH GOD." So who is this "THE GOD" that the Greek distinguishes from "THE WORD"? Well, read on:
"AND THE WORD WAS GOD…."
Here, the "definite article" "THE" is missing. Read on again:
THE SAME WAS IN THE BEGINNING WITH [THE] GOD." (St. John 1:2)
Here, the Greek "definite article" is back clearly showing a distinction between "THE WORD" who is also "GOD" and someone else known as "THE GOD"! Let me give you my paraphrased translation to make it abundantly clear:
"IN THE BEGINNING WAS THE WORD…."
AND THE WORD WAS WITH [FATHER] GOD, AND THE WORD WAS GOD. THE SAME WAS IN THE BEGINNING WITH [FATHER] GOD." (St.
John 1:1, 2)
As previously stated, the Greek language clearly distinguishes "THE WORD" [Jesus] from "The God" or "Father God."
Many other Scriptures also make this awesome distinction such as:
"WHO, BEING IN THE FORM OF GOD, THOUGHT IT NOT ROBBERY TO BE EQUAL WITH GOD: BUT MADE HIMSELF OF NO REPUTATION, AND TOOK UPON HIM THE FORM OF A SERVANT, AND WAS MADE IN THE LIKENESS OF MEN." (Phil.
Ah, the mystery and wonder of the Incarnation — how Jesus could actually separate Himself for a season from His Father and become a tiny seed in the womb of a pure virgin — well,
that is the beautiful essence of the Christmas story! Even the great apostle
Paul struggles for words to try and describe God's greatness:
"O THE DEPTH OF THE RICHES BOTH OF THE WISDOM AND KNOWLEDGE OF GOD! HOW UNSEARCHABLE ARE HIS JUDGMENTS, AND HIS WAYS PAST FINDING OUT!" (Rom.
Ah, dear Partners, it is time once more to reflect on this wonderful story and to rejoice with the angels that:
"THE WORD BECAME FLESH"!
And because He did, we too have become sons and daughters of the King of kings.
Believe it or not, this is actually our 31st Christmas together as the wonderful
TBN family. How Jan and I rejoice that God has made YOU a part of this
dear family. We all have much to thank Him for. The Crouch family rejoices for Jan's healing this year! Thank you all for your prayers! I'm sure you, too, have many things to thank the Lord for. Jan and I are thanking God by bringing Jesus the largest gift of our entire lives! I hope you will join us as this great Voice for God called TBN continues to explode around the world. What greater gift could we bring than sending this glorious Christmas story to multitudes who have never heard it?
So, how do we give a gift to Jesus? He Himself said it best:
"INASMUCH AS YE HAVE DONE IT UNTO ONE OF THE LEAST OF THESE MY BRETHREN, YE HAVE DONE IT UNTO ME." (Matt.
It seems I always love to end my little Christmas letters with this most precious word.
So, MERRY, MERRY CHRISTMAS to all from Jan and me! We love you 31 Christmases strong!
C’mon, EVERYBODY, say “Merry Christmas” with us to NEW YORK CITY!
Paul Jr. joined me on the top of Beacon Mountain in New York—the site of TBN's new digital TV station antenna. The new transmitter is close enough to the "BIG APPLE" to request "MUST CARRY" to all the cable stations in greater New York City!
From my trip earlier this year to Portugal, here I am standing on a rooftop in Lisbon. Yes, these little satellite dishes are springing up all over the world, bringing the message of God's greatest gift—JESUS—to the nations!
This past July, I met with the Chinese Minister of Radio, Film & Television, Mr. Xu Guangchun. We are still waiting the final decision from his office about granting "landing rights" for TBN into CHINA. Please KEEP PRAYING!!
I had the joy of hosting the Deputy Prime Minister of Vanuatu, the Honorable Vistor Rialuth Serge Vohor and the Vanuatu Director of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Kleau Kaloris. Vanuatu is a South Pacific island nation near Australia.
