Once again, in a dusty old foreign antique shop, I spied an ancient oil painting. Instantly I realized that this painting portrayed one of the most precious stories of Jesus' love and forgiveness.
The self righteous religious leaders cast this woman at Jesus' feet, reminding Him that the sin of adultery demanded death by stoning, according to Moses' law!
I have heard several theories as to what Jesus wrote as He kneeled down by the woman, which sent a message to her accusers. Perhaps He revealed some of their sins as He created a message with His finger in the sand!
Finally, He spoke those historic words, "HE THAT IS WITHOUT SIN, CAST THE FIRST STONE"! Actually, Jesus was the only one qualified to cast that first stone — but instead He said, "NEITHER DO I CONDEMN THEE: GO AND SIN NO MORE" (John 8:7).
