“AND WHEN HE [JESUS] WAS GONE FORTH…THERE CAME ONE RUNNING,
AND KNEELED TO HIM, AND ASKED HIM, GOOD MASTER,
WHAT SHALL I DO THAT I MAY INHERIT ETERNAL LIFE?” MK. 10:17
In all the wonderful encounters men and women had
with Jesus, I can find only one where a young man
left Jesus and went away sad!
Most of us know the story well — we call him the
“RICH YOUNG RULER,” and in my search for yet more
KEYS to your needs — I believe I have found another
diamond!
So here we go again: “Why
is Paul always tying our needs,
our health, our prosperity to
money?” It is really very simple
— money in and of itself is
nothing! What good is a piece of
green paper? You see, God is not
after money — He is after YOU
— at least a part of you. Most of
us work forty or more hours per
week and take home a paycheck.
Those forty hours are a piece of
YOU — yes, a part of your very
life; so when that tithe or offering
pays for some time on your TBN
— WOW! It’s just as though you
gave a part of YOURSELF to that
lost soul praying to receive Christ!
But that is only the beginning
as we will see as this fascinating story progresses.
The sad part of this encounter with Jesus comes
with Jesus’ answer to the young man’s question, “What
must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus gave him the
stock answer from Moses’ law. Basically, keep the law
as given to Moses on Mt. Sinai. The young man’s
answer is hard to believe! He actually tells Jesus that he
has kept the law —
“HE ANSWERED AND SAID UNTO HIM,
MASTER, ALL THESE HAVE I OBSERVED
FROM MY YOUTH.” Mk. 10:20
Jesus did not contradict or correct him, so obviously
this was a very pure and blameless young man. In fact,
the text goes on to say:
“THEN JESUS BEHOLDING HIM LOVED
HIM, AND SAID UNTO HIM, ‘ONE THING
THOU LACKEST….” Mk. 10:21
Now right here may be that
next key, that next diamond
that will unlock God’s treasury
to meet your need!
The young man was not
sinlessly perfect and of course
Jesus knows all the deepest
secrets of all hearts. He saw
that possessions meant more to
him than even the “ETERNAL
LIFE” he was asking about.
Therefore, Jesus put His finger
right on the sore spot —
“GO SELL WHATSOEVER
THOU HAST, AND GIVE
TO THE POOR,AND THOU
SHALL HAVE TREASURE
IN HEAVEN: AND COME
TAKE UP THE CROSSAND
FOLLOWME.” Mk. 10:21
The text does not tell us if the young man took
some time to think this awesome request over. Perhaps
he studied this, thought for some time, or he may have
made an immediate decision. All we know for sure is
what follows:
“HE WAS SAD AT THAT SAYING, AND WENT
AWAY GRIEVED: FOR HE HAD GREAT
POSSESSIONS.” Mk. 10:22
To me this is one of the saddest stories in the entire
Bible. First of all, he turned down Jesus’ invitation to be
one of His disciples. Who knows, he might have been the replacement for Judas who betrayed Jesus!?
But just as tragic, he missed Jesus’ next promise that would
have made this RICH YOUNG RULER a billionaire or more!
Dear old Simon Peter turned the key when he asked
the question that was probably on the minds of all the
disciples who were hearing this historic encounter:
“THEN PETER BEGAN TO SAY UNTO HIM, LO,WE
HAVE LEFT ALL, AND HAVE FOLLOWED THEE.”
Mk. 10:28
By now, tragically, the rich young ruler is out of
earshot — if not, he surely would have come running back
at these words of Jesus:
“VERILY I SAY UNTO YOU, THERE IS NO MAN
THAT HATH LEFT HOUSE, OR BRETHREN, OR
SISTERS, OR FATHER, OR MOTHER, OR WIFE, OR
CHILDREN, OR LANDS, FOR MY SAKE AND THE
GOSPEL’S….” Mk. 10:29
Now, here it is: Don’t waste your time on me with the
hottest stock tip, or the best yielding CD, or the “safe bet”
investment that your brother-in-law just got off the wire!
The old saying is true: “A FOOL AND HIS MONEY IS
SOON PARTED!”
Jesus gave us HIS ABSOLUTE FAILSAFE INVESTMENT
policy! Here it is if you will receive it —
“BUT HE SHALL RECEIVE AN HUNDREDFOLD
[PLEASE DON’T MISS THIS]—NOW IN THIS
TIME HOUSES AND BRETHREN, AND SISTERS,
AND MOTHERS, AND CHILDREN, AND LANDS
— WITH PERSECUTIONS; AND IN THE WORLD
TO COME ETERNAL LIFE!” Mk. 10:30.
Tragically, the rich young ruler missed the best investment
in all of time and eternity! Now, what about YOU?

final days of harvest!
