Smile of a Child Launches New Season of Wholesome, Kid-Friendly Movies

What’s better than a cozy evening of entertaining and uplifting movies the whole family can enjoy? The folks at Smile of a Child, the 24-hour channel for kids of all ages, know how challenging it can be for moms, dads, and grandparents to find the kinds of videos that will keep the attention of youngsters—without the objectionable content that so many “kids” shows and movies seem to get away with now days. That’s why they’ve made it a mission to track down and bring to SMILE the very best in feature-length films especially for kids.

“There are some real classic movie jewels that have entertained and inspired kids for years,” said Smile of Child’s program director Brenda Rossman. “We search those out and bring many of them to Smile of a Child to introduce to a new generation of children. And we regularly find and broadcast contemporary films that are destined to become children’s classics in the coming years. We’re excited about the films we have in store for our viewers over the next couple of months.”

Among the entertaining and uplifting movies coming to Smile of a Child:

Where the Red Fern Grows. This classic family film, which has awed and inspired kids for many years, tells the heartwarming story of young Billy Coleman and his quest for his own red-bone hounds. After working hard for two years, Billy finally has enough money and buys a pair of the coveted coonhound pups. He develops a new trust in God as he faces both challenge and adventure roaming the river bottoms of Cherokee country with “Old Dan” and “Little Ann.” Through it all Billy learns the true meaning of friendship, loyalty, integrity, and courage. Where the Red Fern Grows is a timeless and poignant coming-of-age story the whole family will enjoy. Coming to Smile of a Child in November (broadcast time to be determined).

Mandie and the Secret Tunnel. Based on author Lois Leppard’s beloved series, this first of the exciting “Mandie” films introduces viewers to a young girl in the late 1800s who discovers the amazing secrets of her past while discovering what the future holds. With the help of her Cherokee friends, young Mandie learns to overcome life’s hardships and celebrate great triumphs. Stars Dean Jones, with Lexi Johnson as Mandie Shaw. Airs Friday, October 7, at 9:00 p.m. Pacific Standard Time (PST).

Mandie and the Cherokee Treasure. In this follow-up film in the “Mandie” series, Mandie Shaw (Lexi Johnson) is reunited with the mother she never knew and finally has the family she’d always dreamed of. But when her Uncle John embarks on a dangerous quest to keep a promise, Mandie and friends follow by train in an effort to protect Uncle John and save Mandie’s new-found haven. Grand adventure ensues as they struggle to solve riddles and dare to face the secrets of the Lost Antler Cave Mine. Airs Saturday, October 15, at 7:00 p.m. PST.

The Runner from Ravenshead. “Pilgrim’s Progress” meets “The Little Rascals” in this engaging story that features an all-child cast. After a daring escape from notorious Ravenshead Prison, Sam must outrun the relentless wardens. Thankfully, the City of Refuge Guide Service is there to help her to freedom. But with every guide already busy, the accident-prone janitor, Henry, gets his long-awaited first assignment. Join Sam and Henry as they experience hair-breadth escapes, hilarious mishaps, and a climactic pursuit in this action-packed adventure. A delightful allegory about finding rest from the struggles of life, The Runner from Ravenshead combines adventure, humor, and life lessons to capture the hearts of the young and old alike. The American Family Association calls it “one of the most creative films in years.” Airs Saturday, October 22nd, at 7:00 p.m. PST.

TBN founder Paul Crouch noted that since its launch on Christmas Day 2005, Smile of a Child has been getting non-stop rave reviews from parents thrilled about a network they can trust for their kids. “The folks at SMILE take seriously the privilege they’ve been given to provide kids and families with programming that is both entertaining and life-changing,” he said. “And the thanks we get from moms, dads, and grandparents every day lets us know that they’re watching, they trust us, and young lives are being molded through our efforts. That’s quite an honor.”
