God Bless America!
There are countless remarkable stories of faith that make up the story of America, but sadly many of our true heroes—and our nation’s spiritual heritage—are now either neglected, forgotten, or actively suppressed.
TBN and historian David Barton are out to change that—and attract new viewers to Christian television in the process. With your help, TBN is bringing great stories of heroes and their faith, through Jesus-honoring Biblical teaching, original series, and a variety of specials.
This is all part of TBN’s God-given strategy to draw and disciple people who have never before watched Christian television. Once these new viewers are tuning in, we have the opportunity to reach them with the Good News and help them to grow into spiritual maturity.
We recently caught up with David and Tim Barton, the hosts of TBN original series America’s Hidden History. The eye-opening first season focused on the heroes we celebrate—or should celebrate—around our national holidays.
... DECISIONS BY THE U.S. SUPREME COURT IN 1962 AND 1963 ... EFFECTIVELY REMOVED THE BIBLE AND PRAYER FROM PUBLIC SCHOOLS.
Over 30 years ago, when David Barton was serving as a principal and teacher, he began to realize history textbooks were full of inaccuracies—history was being hidden. As he committed to research the decline of morals in America, he discovered a distinct and dramatic change that traced back to decisions by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1962 and 1963 that effectively removed the Bible and prayer from public schools.
One question that plagued his mind in this process was, “If the founding fathers were really opposed to faith, religion, and the Bible in schools, why didn’t they take it out?” This journey spanned many years of research, countless dusty boxes of old correspondence, records from meetings, and even U.S. Supreme Court decisions.
As it turns out, our founders and leaders for many years saw the role of faith as essential for the governing of this great nation. So, David, one of today’s great American history experts, began a journey to find out what was hidden in history and how to reveal these truths for us.
Not surprisingly, David was greatly inspired by a lesser-known, or hidden, Bible story. Nehemiah was a civil leader when the Jewish people returned home from Babylon. Nehemiah relied on Divine Providence as he led the people to rebuild the wall around Jerusalem.
DAVID BARTON WAS INSPIRED BY NEHEMIAH
TO BECOME A "WALL-BUILDER" AND BEGAN
HIS QUEST TO EXPAND THE KINGDOM WITH
THE TRUTHS OF OUR FAITH AND HERITAGE.
They said it couldn’t be done, but with sound leadership to unite the people, and God’s help, the wall was built in just 52 days. David Barton was inspired by Nehemiah to become a “wall-builder” and began his quest to expand the Kingdom with the truths of our faith and heritage.
Over the next few decades, David would collect over 100,000 original documents and artifacts. This foundation of extensive research of original sources would lead to countless books, presentations, articles, and a long-time relationship with TBN. In recent years, David’s staff has expanded, including his son Tim Barton joining the team as the mantle passes to the next generation.
As we discussed the idea of the new and original TBN series America’s Hidden History, we agreed to tell true stories about true heroes—including their flaws—and the God who has so richly blessed this nation.
The first season of specials focusing on national days of celebration was so popular, we are in production for the second season. Each of the new episodes will focus on our historical heroes who have been known over time but are hidden from our schools and popular publications.
Each story will reveal the courage, wisdom, and faith of heroes like Harry Hoosier, George Washington, James Armistead, John Witherspoon, and Audie Murphy. We’ll share the true stories of how God used imperfect people to do amazing things, so we can have the freedom we enjoy today.
By the way, the story of George Washington and the cherry tree is not a true story. Watch America’s Hidden History to find out what really made George Washington our most famous founder.
