God Uses Trials to Test Our Hearts and Equip Us for His Purpose.
The unpredictability of 2020 has left many of us asking, “Why God?” It’s a realization that pushes us to think about true fulfillment. When chaos arises, will true fulfillment come from God or worldly pleasures?
We see this play out in 1 Kings 3:5 when God tells Solomon, “Ask for whatever you want me to give you.” Solomon then asks for wisdom to lead Israel as king. This pleased the Lord because Solomon’s wish was focused on “discernment in administering justice.” In this story we learn about Solomon’s success as king because he had God’s wisdom. However, we also learn about Solomon’s downfall.
So, What Happened?
God gave Solomon every earthly blessing he could ask for. Through wisdom Solomon could have chosen to follow God faithfully. To Solomon’s detriment, he eventually fell prey to foreign women and their false gods. 1 Kings 11:9 says, “The Lord became angry with Solomon because his heart had turned away from the Lord.” It is in this great travesty that Solomon learns about the true meaning of life.
Our Choices in Life Determine Our Outcome
When we face trials, it’s easy for us to complain or grow complacent in our walk with God. However, God uses trials to test our hearts and equip us for more. This is evident in the story of Solomon, and it is a great reminder for all of humanity.
Solomon’s life was disrupted when he fell away from God. He learned that in the end worldly pleasures were meaningless. Only God could satisfy his every need.
