Happy Mother’s Day!
For every man in the Bible building God’s tabernacle, feeding the hungry, being discipled by Jesus, fighting wars and ruling nations, there’s a woman behind him who supported and raised him. The Bible records some of their stories in detail, including those of Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, and Mary, who are listed in the genealogy of Christ. But more often than not, these women are nameless shadows whom we don’t know much about. We do, however, know a lot about their sons.
One of the best-known men in the Bible is mentioned in the genealogy of Christ twice. In Luke 3, he’s mentioned in Jesus’s patrilineal history as an ancestor of Joseph. In Matthew 1, we see this individual as the ancestor of Mary. This individual is King David—a man after God’s own heart. He’s in both Joseph and Mary’s line to fulfill a prophecy found in 2 Samuel 7:12-13, in which God says to David:
When your days are over and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, your own flesh and blood, and I will establish his kingdom. He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.
This showed beyond a doubt that Jesus Christ was a descendant of King David and the rightful heir to the throne of God!
God had put so much thought into how our Messiah—the Savior of the world—would fulfill prophecy and reclaim the world that man had lost through sin. And King David’s mom, his precious God-chosen mom, whose name is not given in Scripture, played a huge part in that.
This Mother’s Day, we pray that all of our moms (or mother figures) would be blessed. May you know how much God loves you and that He has an important plan and a purpose for your life—one which will build up His Kingdom for His Glory!
Happy Mother’s Day!
