  • I've seen joy break after the night.
  • 00:00:28.220 --> 00:00:36.230
  • I wanna see it again.
  • 00:00:36.260 --> 00:00:40.020
  • I've seen tragic and hopeless days

  • 00:00:45.210 --> 00:00:53.270
  • I wanna see it again.
  • 00:00:54.000 --> 00:01:01.120
  • Oh, come, Lord, like a rushing wind.
  • 00:01:01.150 --> 00:01:07.000
  • We are desperate for your presence.
  • 00:01:07.030 --> 00:01:12.230
  • Revive us by your spirit within.
  • 00:01:12.260 --> 00:01:18.020
  • We wanna see you again, see you again.
  • 00:01:18.050 --> 00:01:28.160
  • Oh, we wanna see you.
  • 00:01:28.190 --> 00:01:32.130
  • We wanna see you again.
  • 00:01:32.160 --> 00:01:36.250
  • We remember all the great things you have done.
  • 00:01:36.280 --> 00:01:42.150
  • We believe that greater things are still to come.
  • 00:01:42.180 --> 00:01:48.150
  • We remember all the great things you have done.
  • 00:01:48.180 --> 00:01:53.280
  • We believe that greater things are still to come.
  • 00:01:54.010 --> 00:01:59.210
  • We remember all the great things you have done.
  • 00:01:59.240 --> 00:02:04.220
  • We believe that greater things are still to come.
  • 00:02:04.250 --> 00:02:10.040
  • Oh, come, Lord, like a rushing wind.
  • 00:02:10.070 --> 00:02:15.110
  • We are desperate for your presence.
  • 00:02:15.140 --> 00:02:21.050
  • Revive us by your spirit within.
  • 00:02:21.080 --> 00:02:26.190
  • We wanna see you again, see you again.
  • 00:02:26.220 --> 00:02:36.080
  • We wanna see you.
  • 00:02:36.110 --> 00:02:38.080
  • We wanna see you again,
  • 00:02:38.110 --> 00:02:42.040
  • see you again.
  • 00:02:42.070 --> 00:02:51.170
  • [applauding]
  • 00:02:51.200 --> 00:03:00.160
  • Bobby Schuller: So we're in this series called "The Narrow Road."
  • 00:03:00.190 --> 00:03:03.240
  • Jesus made a promise that if we follow him on a narrow
  • 00:03:03.270 --> 00:03:08.200
  • difficult path that few will find, that we'll find life.
  • 00:03:08.230 --> 00:03:12.010
  • And we wanna spend from now all the way through Easter
  • 00:03:12.040 --> 00:03:16.080
  • talking about the wisdom of Jesus Christ.
  • 00:03:16.110 --> 00:03:18.250
  • You know, we talk about the person and worshiping him.
  • 00:03:18.280 --> 00:03:20.240
  • But Jesus taught us real things like what to do with our anger
  • 00:03:20.270 --> 00:03:24.020
  • and how to love our enemies.
  • 00:03:24.050 --> 00:03:25.280
  • He preached.
  • 00:03:26.010 --> 00:03:27.170
  • He actually said that if we listen to the words that he
  • 00:03:27.200 --> 00:03:30.230
  • preached and we built his life on that, that we would be
  • 00:03:30.260 --> 00:03:33.270
  • like building our house on a solid rock.
  • 00:03:34.000 --> 00:03:36.200
  • And so today, we're gonna talk about one of the key foundations
  • 00:03:36.230 --> 00:03:40.160
  • of Jesus' teaching and wisdom and that is faith.
  • 00:03:40.190 --> 00:03:43.250
  • Faith.
  • 00:03:43.280 --> 00:03:45.290
  • Living with constant trust.
  • 00:03:46.020 --> 00:03:48.240
  • Faith, not sight.
  • 00:03:48.270 --> 00:03:50.210
  • Faith is rooted on knowledge but faith is also a heart thing.
  • 00:03:50.240 --> 00:03:55.110
  • And we're gonna talk about that today.
  • 00:03:55.140 --> 00:03:57.150
  • The first thing you need to learn about faith is that you
  • 00:03:57.180 --> 00:04:00.090
  • can have faith in God because God is actually good and
  • 00:04:00.120 --> 00:04:03.030
  • really does love you and really is rooting for you.
  • 00:04:03.060 --> 00:04:05.290
  • God is not looking forward to getting back at you
  • 00:04:06.020 --> 00:04:08.110
  • or condemning you.
  • 00:04:08.140 --> 00:04:10.030
  • He's not holding things over your heads.
  • 00:04:10.060 --> 00:04:11.190
  • You are a trusting person.
  • 00:04:11.220 --> 00:04:13.250
  • You've built your life on God's foundation and, yeah, you mess
  • 00:04:13.280 --> 00:04:17.080
  • up from time to time and you sin if you're a human being.
  • 00:04:17.110 --> 00:04:20.010
  • But that's--God is not hanging that over your head.
  • 00:04:20.040 --> 00:04:23.170
  • God wants to open heaven wide and pour out so much blessing
  • 00:04:23.200 --> 00:04:27.080
  • on your life that there's no room to even contain it.
  • 00:04:27.110 --> 00:04:30.230
  • And I just wanna proclaim that over you today.
  • 00:04:30.260 --> 00:04:32.290
  • That the only limit to that is your faith.
  • 00:04:33.020 --> 00:04:36.040
  • And that's why Jesus constantly is harping on his disciples,
  • 00:04:36.070 --> 00:04:39.040
  • "Oh, you, of little faith."
  • 00:04:39.070 --> 00:04:43.070
  • So today we're gonna talk about that.
  • 00:04:43.100 --> 00:04:44.250
  • And I remember when I was a kid, I went to this Baptist school
  • 00:04:44.280 --> 00:04:48.040
  • in L.A.
  • 00:04:48.070 --> 00:04:49.140
  • It was actually a great school.
  • 00:04:49.170 --> 00:04:51.000
  • I had an--a wonderful experience there.
  • 00:04:51.030 --> 00:04:52.280
  • But, you know, there's always a few rotten apples in every
  • 00:04:53.010 --> 00:04:55.130
  • applecart and I remember I was talking to this teacher.
  • 00:04:55.160 --> 00:04:59.050
  • I think I was in 4th or 5th grade.
  • 00:04:59.080 --> 00:05:01.120
  • And this old crotchety woman, religious woman, brought a bunch
  • 00:05:01.150 --> 00:05:04.150
  • of kids into a room and sat us down and we were learning
  • 00:05:04.180 --> 00:05:09.150
  • the Noah story.
  • 00:05:09.180 --> 00:05:11.190
  • And she said to us, "What does this story say?
  • 00:05:11.220 --> 00:05:16.070
  • You know, God destroyed the world in a flood."
  • 00:05:16.100 --> 00:05:18.060
  • Yeah, and she said, "What does the rainbow teach us?"
  • 00:05:18.090 --> 00:05:20.290
  • And we all said, "It's a promise that God won't destroy the world
  • 00:05:21.020 --> 00:05:24.270
  • again," she said, "No.
  • 00:05:25.000 --> 00:05:27.190
  • It's a promise that God won't destroy the world again
  • 00:05:27.220 --> 00:05:30.150
  • with water."
  • 00:05:30.180 --> 00:05:32.210
  • She said--and she goes,
  • 00:05:32.240 --> 00:05:34.290
  • "So how's God gonna destroy the world next time?"
  • 00:05:35.020 --> 00:05:38.150
  • And we all go, "I dunno."
  • 00:05:38.180 --> 00:05:40.210
  • And she was, like, "With fire."
  • 00:05:40.240 --> 00:05:42.190
  • And we're, like, "Okay."
  • 00:05:42.220 --> 00:05:44.190
  • So God's gonna destroy the world with fire.
  • 00:05:44.220 --> 00:05:48.000
  • That's the promise of the rainbow.
  • 00:05:48.030 --> 00:05:50.120
  • Tell a bunch of kids.
  • 00:05:50.150 --> 00:05:52.110
  • And then she says--and then she starts teaching us, "So watch
  • 00:05:52.140 --> 00:05:56.090
  • out for hell because you--every one of you is gonna go to hell
  • 00:05:56.120 --> 00:06:00.240
  • unless you confess every single sin," and so we began to talk
  • 00:06:00.270 --> 00:06:06.250
  • about that and she basically taught us in this school the
  • 00:06:06.280 --> 00:06:09.020
  • worst theology I've ever heard.
  • 00:06:09.050 --> 00:06:11.130
  • And that is unless you confess every single sin,
  • 00:06:11.160 --> 00:06:16.130
  • God's throwing you into hell.
  • 00:06:16.160 --> 00:06:17.240
  • I mean, that's for sure. You're going to hell.
  • 00:06:17.270 --> 00:06:20.130
  • So, like, if you get 'em all confessed and you're doing great
  • 00:06:20.160 --> 00:06:23.100
  • but, you know, one little slip up at the end, hell.
  • 00:06:23.130 --> 00:06:27.260
  • And so it was, like, listening to this, I was--it was a no--
  • 00:06:27.290 --> 00:06:32.010
  • you know, scary.
  • 00:06:32.040 --> 00:06:33.120
  • I mean, I just assumed it was true as a teacher was saying it.
  • 00:06:33.150 --> 00:06:35.240
  • So I talked to my mom about this later and she's, like,
  • 00:06:35.270 --> 00:06:37.270
  • "That's stupid.
  • 00:06:38.000 --> 00:06:39.110
  • That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard.
  • 00:06:39.140 --> 00:06:40.220
  • No, you don't go to heaven for, you know."
  • 00:06:40.250 --> 00:06:43.150
  • 'Cause I'm thinking, "Man,
  • 00:06:43.180 --> 00:06:44.290
  • I--if we have to confess every sin, I've got a lot of 'em
  • 00:06:45.020 --> 00:06:46.210
  • and I've got a lot that I've forgotten, like."
  • 00:06:46.240 --> 00:06:49.260
  • And trying to remember.
  • 00:06:49.290 --> 00:06:53.050
  • My point is that many of us, most of us, don't think God
  • 00:06:53.080 --> 00:06:57.230
  • is just, you know, just really looking forward to throwing us
  • 00:06:57.260 --> 00:07:00.290
  • in hell.
  • 00:07:01.020 --> 00:07:02.090
  • But many of us, I think unconsciously, carry some of
  • 00:07:02.120 --> 00:07:05.110
  • these unhealthy views of God, that unless I do this perfectly
  • 00:07:05.140 --> 00:07:10.180
  • or that perfectly, that maybe God's not gonna put me in hell
  • 00:07:10.210 --> 00:07:15.000
  • but he is gonna, like, get at me or punish me or hurt me.
  • 00:07:15.030 --> 00:07:19.120
  • And I wanna clarify.
  • 00:07:19.150 --> 00:07:20.220
  • I mean, there is a hell and there is a heaven.
  • 00:07:20.250 --> 00:07:22.150
  • But we get to--we get to heaven by faith not by works.
  • 00:07:22.180 --> 00:07:27.210
  • Not by confessing things, even.
  • 00:07:27.240 --> 00:07:30.030
  • I mean, we have to confess Jesus as Lord but--but heaven--my
  • 00:07:30.060 --> 00:07:34.160
  • point is this.
  • 00:07:34.190 --> 00:07:36.030
  • That God wants you to go to heaven and in a story of so many
  • 00:07:36.060 --> 00:07:40.240
  • religious people tell about God it's like God kinda wants you to
  • 00:07:40.270 --> 00:07:44.040
  • go to hell but if you get everything right, you know,
  • 00:07:44.070 --> 00:07:47.090
  • and you work the system, you might get in, you know?
  • 00:07:47.120 --> 00:07:50.140
  • So I guess I wanna begin there to say nobody wants you
  • 00:07:50.170 --> 00:07:53.190
  • go to--to go to heaven more than God.
  • 00:07:53.220 --> 00:07:56.000
  • God really wants to connect with you.
  • 00:07:56.030 --> 00:07:58.200
  • He is your dad.
  • 00:07:58.230 --> 00:08:00.260
  • And he's a good dad and he's a loving dad.
  • 00:08:00.290 --> 00:08:02.230
  • Maybe you had a mean, abusive dad or an emotionally
  • 00:08:02.260 --> 00:08:05.010
  • shut off dad.
  • 00:08:05.040 --> 00:08:06.130
  • God is not that way.
  • 00:08:06.160 --> 00:08:08.030
  • God is--God is desperate to be with you.
  • 00:08:08.060 --> 00:08:11.100
  • God longs to hear the sound of your voice.
  • 00:08:11.130 --> 00:08:13.250
  • God calls you his beloved.
  • 00:08:13.280 --> 00:08:16.110
  • You're the first thought on God's mind.
  • 00:08:16.140 --> 00:08:19.020
  • God is not ashamed of you or ashamed to be seen with you.
  • 00:08:19.050 --> 00:08:22.140
  • He's proud to tell others that you're his kid.
  • 00:08:22.170 --> 00:08:25.030
  • He's proud of you.
  • 00:08:25.060 --> 00:08:26.280
  • He loves you. You're his kid.
  • 00:08:27.010 --> 00:08:29.280
  • You're his creation.
  • 00:08:30.010 --> 00:08:31.100
  • And no matter how old you are, God's much older and, in
  • 00:08:31.130 --> 00:08:34.020
  • his eyes, you're still a kid.
  • 00:08:34.050 --> 00:08:35.260
  • And that's--and there's a lot of grace for children.
  • 00:08:35.290 --> 00:08:38.070
  • And that's why Jesus tells us to embrace that.
  • 00:08:38.100 --> 00:08:41.000
  • They're to become like little children to inherit
  • 00:08:41.030 --> 00:08:43.180
  • the kingdom of God.
  • 00:08:43.210 --> 00:08:44.290
  • And that's what we do.
  • 00:08:45.020 --> 00:08:46.100
  • So you walk by faith and not by sight.
  • 00:08:46.130 --> 00:08:48.150
  • You live by faith and not by your trophies and all of your,
  • 00:08:48.180 --> 00:08:52.200
  • you know, religious awards.
  • 00:08:52.230 --> 00:08:55.270
  • It's--that's not about that and you know that.
  • 00:08:56.000 --> 00:08:58.160
  • Life is about walking and living by faith.
  • 00:08:58.190 --> 00:09:00.240
  • Faith pleases God.
  • 00:09:00.270 --> 00:09:02.140
  • Faith pleases God.
  • 00:09:02.170 --> 00:09:03.250
  • And he is so pleased by faith, I believe that with all my heart.
  • 00:09:03.280 --> 00:09:07.040
  • So, very often we project this nasty stuff on God that
  • 00:09:07.070 --> 00:09:11.090
  • isn't true about God.
  • 00:09:11.120 --> 00:09:13.210
  • How do I know that?
  • 00:09:13.240 --> 00:09:15.120
  • Because Jesus shows us what God is like.
  • 00:09:15.150 --> 00:09:19.120
  • Jesus never goes around making people sick, right?
  • 00:09:19.150 --> 00:09:26.180
  • Jesus never goes around hurting people because he's angry
  • 00:09:26.210 --> 00:09:30.110
  • at them, right?
  • 00:09:30.140 --> 00:09:32.210
  • He kicked over a few tables but I don't think he hurt anybody.
  • 00:09:32.240 --> 00:09:35.030
  • And certainly God gets angry just like everybody else.
  • 00:09:35.060 --> 00:09:38.240
  • But it's rooted in love, like all good anger, right?
  • 00:09:38.270 --> 00:09:41.230
  • God loves you.
  • 00:09:41.260 --> 00:09:43.070
  • And he's rooting for you and he's pulling for you.
  • 00:09:43.100 --> 00:09:45.160
  • In fact, when Jesus talks about hell, in almost every account
  • 00:09:45.190 --> 00:09:49.230
  • he's talking to the Pharisees.
  • 00:09:49.260 --> 00:09:51.230
  • He's saying to the religious people who were hanging hell
  • 00:09:51.260 --> 00:09:54.290
  • over the heads of everyday people, he says to those
  • 00:09:55.020 --> 00:09:58.290
  • leaders, "Hell is your place.
  • 00:09:59.020 --> 00:10:01.060
  • That's where you're going," I didn't mean to go down that road
  • 00:10:01.090 --> 00:10:03.280
  • except to say that Jesus shows us what God is like and Jesus
  • 00:10:04.010 --> 00:10:10.240
  • is a friend of sinners.
  • 00:10:10.270 --> 00:10:13.030
  • He's a friend of wounded people.
  • 00:10:13.060 --> 00:10:16.160
  • He doesn't hold a grudge.
  • 00:10:16.190 --> 00:10:18.270
  • He loves you.
  • 00:10:19.000 --> 00:10:20.220
  • He's proud of you.
  • 00:10:20.250 --> 00:10:22.030
  • He's forgiven you and he's rooting for you.
  • 00:10:22.060 --> 00:10:24.070
  • And you know that because you walk by faith.
  • 00:10:24.100 --> 00:10:26.090
  • You are a faithful person.
  • 00:10:26.120 --> 00:10:27.260
  • Your life is rooted in God.
  • 00:10:27.290 --> 00:10:29.100
  • So whatever it is you're going through, whatever hard time
  • 00:10:29.130 --> 00:10:32.220
  • it is you're facing, God sees it, he's there with you.
  • 00:10:32.250 --> 00:10:35.160
  • And he is gonna help you get through.
  • 00:10:35.190 --> 00:10:38.000
  • Faith is trusting God through thick and thin.
  • 00:10:38.030 --> 00:10:42.060
  • Faith says this.
  • 00:10:42.090 --> 00:10:43.170
  • Because I know who God is, based on his character, whatever bad
  • 00:10:43.200 --> 00:10:47.210
  • thing I'm going through right now, the good that is yet to
  • 00:10:47.240 --> 00:10:51.080
  • come is gonna so far outweigh whatever trial it is I'm going
  • 00:10:51.110 --> 00:10:55.000
  • through, it'll mean nothing except that it meant--
  • 00:10:55.030 --> 00:10:58.080
  • made me grow.
  • 00:10:58.110 --> 00:10:59.180
  • It'll pale in comparison in the end.
  • 00:10:59.210 --> 00:11:02.220
  • That's what the gospel's about, trusting that in the end, and
  • 00:11:02.250 --> 00:11:06.040
  • this is a promise to you if you're going through a hard
  • 00:11:06.070 --> 00:11:08.240
  • time, whatever it is you're going through, the worse it is,
  • 00:11:08.270 --> 00:11:12.240
  • the better reward it's gonna be on the other end.
  • 00:11:12.270 --> 00:11:14.150
  • I just believe that.
  • 00:11:14.180 --> 00:11:16.030
  • God is so good.
  • 00:11:16.060 --> 00:11:18.160
  • He is the balancer of the scales.
  • 00:11:18.190 --> 00:11:21.240
  • I just believe anything that is good is from God
  • 00:11:21.270 --> 00:11:27.010
  • and anything that is not good is not from God.
  • 00:11:27.040 --> 00:11:29.100
  • I just believe it.
  • 00:11:29.130 --> 00:11:31.190
  • He loves you, he's rooting for you, and whatever it is you're
  • 00:11:31.220 --> 00:11:34.130
  • facing, in the end, you're gonna say, "I'm so glad that I trusted
  • 00:11:34.160 --> 00:11:37.280
  • in my loving Father, and not in the fickle promises of society
  • 00:11:38.010 --> 00:11:42.240
  • or other things.
  • 00:11:42.270 --> 00:11:44.150
  • I trusted in him all the way."
  • 00:11:44.180 --> 00:11:47.040
  • And you do and I'm so proud of you.
  • 00:11:47.070 --> 00:11:49.040
  • Keep trusting in him.
  • 00:11:49.070 --> 00:11:50.140
  • Keep faith alive.
  • 00:11:50.170 --> 00:11:51.250
  • God is faithful.
  • 00:11:51.280 --> 00:11:53.060
  • You have to trust in God.
  • 00:11:53.090 --> 00:11:54.250
  • You can't depend on someone else trusting in God.
  • 00:11:54.280 --> 00:11:56.250
  • It has to be your decision.
  • 00:11:56.280 --> 00:11:58.210
  • The heart and the mind of the human being is like an arena.
  • 00:11:58.240 --> 00:12:01.240
  • You battle for your own soul and in that arena you have to choose
  • 00:12:01.270 --> 00:12:06.030
  • God over the world.
  • 00:12:06.060 --> 00:12:07.220
  • It's your decision.
  • 00:12:07.250 --> 00:12:09.030
  • No one can make it for you.
  • 00:12:09.060 --> 00:12:10.200
  • And I'm so proud that you've chosen Christ.
  • 00:12:10.230 --> 00:12:13.200
  • In Matthew chapter 8, the verse that was read today,
  • 00:12:13.230 --> 00:12:17.170
  • it's a famous story of the centurion.
  • 00:12:17.200 --> 00:12:19.210
  • And the centurion comes to Jesus and, in those days, centurions,
  • 00:12:19.240 --> 00:12:25.080
  • who were Roman soldiers, were outsiders because
  • 00:12:25.110 --> 00:12:29.150
  • in Jesus' day the Romans were hated.
  • 00:12:29.180 --> 00:12:31.070
  • Not only were they not Jewish and unclean,
  • 00:12:31.100 --> 00:12:34.060
  • I mean they were pagan.
  • 00:12:34.090 --> 00:12:35.200
  • They worshiped pagan gods.
  • 00:12:35.230 --> 00:12:37.020
  • They worshiped gods with three heads and serpents and demons.
  • 00:12:37.050 --> 00:12:40.140
  • They worshiped this kind of thing.
  • 00:12:40.170 --> 00:12:41.290
  • They built temples and they had orgies and, I mean, they did
  • 00:12:42.020 --> 00:12:46.070
  • all sorts of crazy stuff that religious Jews obviously
  • 00:12:46.100 --> 00:12:50.210
  • found--and were right--found sinful and bad and evil.
  • 00:12:50.240 --> 00:12:54.140
  • And yet here's this centurion that comes to Jesus.
  • 00:12:54.170 --> 00:12:59.150
  • And he comes on behalf of his slave, which is already
  • 00:12:59.180 --> 00:13:03.060
  • a surprising part of the story because, in those days,
  • 00:13:03.090 --> 00:13:05.230
  • slaves were like property.
  • 00:13:05.260 --> 00:13:07.060
  • They weren't people.
  • 00:13:07.090 --> 00:13:08.190
  • And the Romans had no problem believing that children
  • 00:13:08.220 --> 00:13:10.290
  • and slaves in particular had no value.
  • 00:13:11.020 --> 00:13:13.270
  • And so the fact that he--he says, "My slave is suffering
  • 00:13:14.000 --> 00:13:17.180
  • and, Jesus, I need you to heal him," and then Jesus says,
  • 00:13:17.210 --> 00:13:21.230
  • "Shall I come to your house?"
  • 00:13:21.260 --> 00:13:23.220
  • Which is already he shouldn't do because, in those days, it's
  • 00:13:23.250 --> 00:13:26.220
  • unclean for a Jew to go in the house of a non-Jew or a pagan
  • 00:13:26.250 --> 00:13:30.150
  • 'cause the house was unclean.
  • 00:13:30.180 --> 00:13:32.080
  • So Jesus offers to go to his house.
  • 00:13:32.110 --> 00:13:34.100
  • But the centurion then says, "I am not worthy to have you under
  • 00:13:34.130 --> 00:13:38.130
  • my roof."
  • 00:13:38.160 --> 00:13:39.250
  • And he just says, simply, "I tell this man to go this
  • 00:13:39.280 --> 00:13:42.250
  • way and I tell that man to go that way and they--they do it.
  • 00:13:42.280 --> 00:13:46.290
  • Why? Because I say so."
  • 00:13:47.020 --> 00:13:49.030
  • He says, "You simply say the word and it will happen.
  • 00:13:49.060 --> 00:13:54.010
  • All I need from you, Jesus, is your word.
  • 00:13:54.040 --> 00:13:57.120
  • That's it.
  • 00:13:57.150 --> 00:13:58.260
  • I don't need you to come to my house.
  • 00:13:58.290 --> 00:14:01.010
  • I don't need you to touch my servant.
  • 00:14:01.040 --> 00:14:03.160
  • I don't need you to walk with me.
  • 00:14:03.190 --> 00:14:04.260
  • I don't need you to visit. I just need your word.
  • 00:14:04.290 --> 00:14:07.120
  • I just need you to say it and I'll believe it
  • 00:14:07.150 --> 00:14:10.040
  • and it will be so."
  • 00:14:10.070 --> 00:14:13.200
  • And Christ's response is--he looks at all these
  • 00:14:13.230 --> 00:14:15.170
  • religious people who are showing off their religious trophies
  • 00:14:15.200 --> 00:14:18.110
  • and he says, "None of you has as much faith as this man.
  • 00:14:18.140 --> 00:14:21.280
  • In all of Israel, I have never seen so much faith as this man."
  • 00:14:22.010 --> 00:14:26.120
  • And he says, "Many are gonna come from the East and the West
  • 00:14:26.150 --> 00:14:29.110
  • and they're gonna sit at the table.
  • 00:14:29.140 --> 00:14:31.110
  • But a lot of these religious elites, they're gonna be
  • 00:14:31.140 --> 00:14:33.230
  • thrown out--" Why?
  • 00:14:33.260 --> 00:14:36.050
  • Because you have to walk by faith.
  • 00:14:36.080 --> 00:14:38.250
  • By faith. By faith alone. Faith!
  • 00:14:38.280 --> 00:14:42.030
  • Faith is what pleases God.
  • 00:14:42.060 --> 00:14:45.270
  • The man or the woman that says, "In spite of my sin, in spite of
  • 00:14:46.000 --> 00:14:49.200
  • my weaknesses, in spite of my sickness, in spite of my trials,
  • 00:14:49.230 --> 00:14:51.180
  • I trust God," that is the person that God says, "I am proud
  • 00:14:51.210 --> 00:14:58.170
  • of her, I'm proud of him." And that's what God says about you,
  • 00:14:58.200 --> 00:15:02.030
  • "You put your trust in God and I'm so proud of you," that
  • 00:15:02.060 --> 00:15:05.160
  • is going to reap huge rewards and benefits in your life.
  • 00:15:05.190 --> 00:15:10.020
  • Keep doing it. Trust in God.
  • 00:15:10.050 --> 00:15:12.110
  • He's worth trusting.
  • 00:15:12.140 --> 00:15:13.210
  • It is faith, faith that saves us.
  • 00:15:13.240 --> 00:15:16.130
  • Faith.
  • 00:15:16.160 --> 00:15:18.260
  • And that's the narrow road.
  • 00:15:18.290 --> 00:15:20.260
  • We don't need to make faith more complicated than it already is.
  • 00:15:20.290 --> 00:15:26.050
  • It's simple. Faith means trust.
  • 00:15:26.080 --> 00:15:28.230
  • You've already put your faith in several things today.
  • 00:15:28.260 --> 00:15:31.090
  • You've put your faith in that pew, you know.
  • 00:15:31.120 --> 00:15:33.050
  • When you sat down on the pew, you didn't inspect it.
  • 00:15:33.080 --> 00:15:35.200
  • You didn't make sure all the screws were intact.
  • 00:15:35.230 --> 00:15:37.240
  • You just sat down, hopefully, and you thought, "This is gonna
  • 00:15:37.270 --> 00:15:40.180
  • hold me and my whole family, this one pew,"
  • 00:15:40.210 --> 00:15:42.270
  • and you were right.
  • 00:15:43.000 --> 00:15:44.200
  • There you are.
  • 00:15:44.230 --> 00:15:46.000
  • Your butt is completely safe.
  • 00:15:46.030 --> 00:15:48.130
  • Maybe not those chairs outside, right?
  • 00:15:48.160 --> 00:15:50.190
  • Not those ones.
  • 00:15:50.220 --> 00:15:52.260
  • Ha, ha, we're getting new ones, don't worry.
  • 00:15:52.290 --> 00:15:56.110
  • But the pews you're in, you had faith in the pew and you were
  • 00:15:56.140 --> 00:15:58.290
  • right to have faith in the pew because it's safe.
  • 00:15:59.020 --> 00:16:01.090
  • And when every time you go to a stop light and you cruise
  • 00:16:01.120 --> 00:16:04.180
  • through a stop light at 65 miles an hour--I'm pointing at my mom,
  • 00:16:04.210 --> 00:16:09.160
  • the crazy driver.
  • 00:16:09.190 --> 00:16:11.150
  • When you go through a stop light, a green light, you assume
  • 00:16:11.180 --> 00:16:15.050
  • that those people are gonna stop at that red light.
  • 00:16:15.080 --> 00:16:18.100
  • How do you know? Nothing's making their car stop.
  • 00:16:18.130 --> 00:16:20.280
  • They could easily be on their phone and breeze right through.
  • 00:16:21.010 --> 00:16:23.150
  • And from time to time, they do.
  • 00:16:23.180 --> 00:16:25.120
  • How do you know? You have faith.
  • 00:16:25.150 --> 00:16:28.000
  • You trust that they will.
  • 00:16:28.030 --> 00:16:29.120
  • And the more green lights you go through,
  • 00:16:29.150 --> 00:16:31.110
  • the more faith you have.
  • 00:16:31.140 --> 00:16:32.270
  • The more you walk with God, the more you sit in his chair or
  • 00:16:33.000 --> 00:16:36.000
  • drive through his green lights, the more you're gonna see
  • 00:16:36.030 --> 00:16:38.040
  • he's worth trusting.
  • 00:16:38.070 --> 00:16:40.110
  • And you do, you trust in him.
  • 00:16:40.140 --> 00:16:42.020
  • Probably the most obvious example is flying.
  • 00:16:42.050 --> 00:16:44.210
  • And I think flying on a commercial airplane
  • 00:16:44.240 --> 00:16:46.210
  • is so similar, analogous, to the faith journey.
  • 00:16:46.240 --> 00:16:49.290
  • Look, there is no safer place in the whole world than--that you
  • 00:16:50.020 --> 00:16:53.160
  • can be than on a commercial flight in flight.
  • 00:16:53.190 --> 00:16:56.250
  • Did you know that?
  • 00:16:56.280 --> 00:16:58.120
  • You are more likely to be shot while at your computer from
  • 00:16:58.150 --> 00:17:04.170
  • the outside than you are to die in a commercial airplane flight.
  • 00:17:04.200 --> 00:17:09.210
  • You are 17 times more likely to die while walking from falling
  • 00:17:09.240 --> 00:17:15.190
  • or getting hit by something than you are on a commercial flight.
  • 00:17:15.220 --> 00:17:18.190
  • You are--I can't remember the number.
  • 00:17:18.220 --> 00:17:20.270
  • You are way more likely to die on a train
  • 00:17:21.000 --> 00:17:24.270
  • than you are on a plane.
  • 00:17:25.000 --> 00:17:26.080
  • But this is my favorite one.
  • 00:17:26.110 --> 00:17:27.190
  • You are--you are--if you were to fly--listen, if you're scared of
  • 00:17:27.220 --> 00:17:31.100
  • flying, listen to me.
  • 00:17:31.130 --> 00:17:32.240
  • If you were to fly commercially every day and drive every day,
  • 00:17:32.270 --> 00:17:38.070
  • you'd be more likely to die in a car accident 500 times before
  • 00:17:38.100 --> 00:17:42.260
  • you died in a plane crash.
  • 00:17:42.290 --> 00:17:44.250
  • And then you get on a plane and it starts taking off and
  • 00:17:44.280 --> 00:17:48.170
  • all that info goes out the window, right?
  • 00:17:48.200 --> 00:17:50.140
  • You're just, like, "I'm still scared.
  • 00:17:50.170 --> 00:17:52.010
  • Uh, I'm nervous," you're in a giant metal thing,
  • 00:17:52.040 --> 00:17:55.000
  • you've seen planes crash.
  • 00:17:55.030 --> 00:17:57.150
  • It's scary!
  • 00:17:57.180 --> 00:17:59.010
  • And faith is very much like that.
  • 00:17:59.040 --> 00:18:00.230
  • Faith doesn't mean you're not scared.
  • 00:18:00.260 --> 00:18:03.280
  • Faith means you move forward in spite of your fears because
  • 00:18:04.010 --> 00:18:08.220
  • you have knowledge.
  • 00:18:08.250 --> 00:18:10.140
  • You know God's faithful and he'll get you there.
  • 00:18:10.170 --> 00:18:12.200
  • Faith is like the person who's afraid of flying and--but has
  • 00:18:12.230 --> 00:18:16.010
  • that knowledge and, step by step, gets on a plane, puts
  • 00:18:16.040 --> 00:18:18.150
  • the seatbelt on, has a couple of glasses of wine or Vicodin
  • 00:18:18.180 --> 00:18:22.290
  • or what--not Vicodin. Is that right?
  • 00:18:23.020 --> 00:18:24.140
  • What's--whatever ones you do.
  • 00:18:24.170 --> 00:18:26.040
  • And to just get there but they get there.
  • 00:18:26.070 --> 00:18:29.210
  • That's what faith is.
  • 00:18:29.240 --> 00:18:31.030
  • Faith is not fearlessness.
  • 00:18:31.060 --> 00:18:33.060
  • Faith is trust in--you know, if you weren't afraid, you wouldn't
  • 00:18:33.090 --> 00:18:37.070
  • need trust, right?
  • 00:18:37.100 --> 00:18:41.030
  • Faith pleases God.
  • 00:18:41.060 --> 00:18:42.250
  • Keep faith alive.
  • 00:18:42.280 --> 00:18:44.260
  • You trust in God and that is the right move.
  • 00:18:44.290 --> 00:18:47.250
  • He's on your side.
  • 00:18:47.280 --> 00:18:49.050
  • He's rooting for you.
  • 00:18:49.080 --> 00:18:50.160
  • He's gonna get you there safely.
  • 00:18:50.190 --> 00:18:52.040
  • Can I get an "Amen"?
  • 00:18:52.070 --> 00:18:53.170
  • So faith gives us freedom.
  • 00:18:53.200 --> 00:18:56.280
  • Freedom to live every moment with joy, even in the midst of
  • 00:18:57.010 --> 00:18:58.280
  • our suffering.
  • 00:18:59.010 --> 00:19:00.270
  • Because, hey, I'd rather have a good future and a bad present
  • 00:19:01.000 --> 00:19:05.110
  • than a bad future and a good present,
  • 00:19:05.140 --> 00:19:07.220
  • you know what I'm saying?
  • 00:19:07.250 --> 00:19:09.060
  • If some--things are going great right now but I know couple of
  • 00:19:09.090 --> 00:19:11.290
  • days it's over, I'm gonna die or something, I'd rather have it
  • 00:19:12.020 --> 00:19:14.230
  • the other way.
  • 00:19:14.260 --> 00:19:16.050
  • And I believe and this is so important, no matter what it is
  • 00:19:16.080 --> 00:19:18.230
  • that you're going through, whatever it is you're facing,
  • 00:19:18.260 --> 00:19:20.240
  • whether it's sickness or poverty, or anything,
  • 00:19:20.270 --> 00:19:24.210
  • the future God has for you, so, so far outweighs whatever
  • 00:19:24.240 --> 00:19:29.210
  • your present is, that you can live right now with joy.
  • 00:19:29.240 --> 00:19:33.130
  • So three things I want you to do
  • 00:19:33.160 --> 00:19:36.050
  • in order to walk by faith this week.
  • 00:19:36.080 --> 00:19:38.080
  • Number one, pray with faith not with sympathy.
  • 00:19:38.110 --> 00:19:42.280
  • You've heard me say this before.
  • 00:19:43.010 --> 00:19:44.170
  • This is so important.
  • 00:19:44.200 --> 00:19:45.280
  • When you pray for something, believe it will happen.
  • 00:19:46.010 --> 00:19:48.050
  • When you pray for something--I remember when Hannah and I, we
  • 00:19:48.080 --> 00:19:52.290
  • were at a small gathering of pastors at Lakewood and
  • 00:19:53.020 --> 00:19:58.120
  • Dodie Osteen, Joel Osteen's mom, little lady, very pretty,
  • 00:19:58.150 --> 00:20:04.230
  • older lady just--but has this gravitas,
  • 00:20:04.260 --> 00:20:07.270
  • this heaviness, to her.
  • 00:20:08.000 --> 00:20:09.200
  • And she started praying for the different pastors.
  • 00:20:09.230 --> 00:20:11.070
  • And she didn't pray like normal people.
  • 00:20:11.100 --> 00:20:15.000
  • It was like she was arguing with God, really.
  • 00:20:15.030 --> 00:20:19.020
  • It was like she was warring with the Lord, wrestling.
  • 00:20:19.050 --> 00:20:21.160
  • That's what Israel actually--the word "Israel" means
  • 00:20:21.190 --> 00:20:23.080
  • to wrestle with God. It was like she was doing that.
  • 00:20:23.110 --> 00:20:25.160
  • And so when she prayed for Cohen, she was, like,
  • 00:20:25.190 --> 00:20:27.190
  • "God, you've gotta heal Cohen!"
  • 00:20:27.220 --> 00:20:30.130
  • She's, like, "You've gotta heal him.
  • 00:20:30.160 --> 00:20:32.100
  • How's Hannah supposed to minister your Word if her son
  • 00:20:32.130 --> 00:20:36.230
  • is sick all the time?"
  • 00:20:36.260 --> 00:20:38.140
  • And then she's, like--and then she's, like, pacing a little
  • 00:20:38.170 --> 00:20:41.050
  • bit, like, she's not done.
  • 00:20:41.080 --> 00:20:43.130
  • It's, like, maybe she's listening,
  • 00:20:43.160 --> 00:20:45.030
  • maybe she's getting fired up.
  • 00:20:45.060 --> 00:20:46.220
  • She's, like, "God, you've got to heal Cohen!
  • 00:20:46.250 --> 00:20:49.180
  • You've gotta heal him, Cohen." And then starts, like,
  • 00:20:49.210 --> 00:20:52.160
  • not praying but declaring with authority.
  • 00:20:52.190 --> 00:20:54.280
  • Not as the scribes and Pharisees do but as someone
  • 00:20:55.010 --> 00:20:57.160
  • who has authority.
  • 00:20:57.190 --> 00:20:59.100
  • She says, "Cohen is healed.
  • 00:20:59.130 --> 00:21:01.110
  • Cohen's body's in line with the Word of God.
  • 00:21:01.140 --> 00:21:03.200
  • Cohen will be above and not beneath.
  • 00:21:03.230 --> 00:21:05.250
  • Cohen will be the victor.
  • 00:21:05.280 --> 00:21:07.050
  • Cohen--" I mean, just starts--this is how she prays.
  • 00:21:07.080 --> 00:21:09.180
  • Not as the scribes and Pharisees but as one having authority.
  • 00:21:09.210 --> 00:21:16.140
  • In the Bible, when Christians pray, they didn't ask God
  • 00:21:16.170 --> 00:21:19.040
  • for something.
  • 00:21:19.070 --> 00:21:20.140
  • They declared it to be so and it was.
  • 00:21:20.170 --> 00:21:23.020
  • That's why Peter doesn't say, "Lord, would you heal this man
  • 00:21:23.050 --> 00:21:24.270
  • who can't walk?"
  • 00:21:25.000 --> 00:21:26.120
  • He just looks at him, he says, "Silver and gold have I not.
  • 00:21:26.150 --> 00:21:28.060
  • Rise up and walk." Why?
  • 00:21:28.090 --> 00:21:29.240
  • 'Cause Peter knows he has the authority to do that.
  • 00:21:29.270 --> 00:21:31.250
  • That's what faith is.
  • 00:21:31.280 --> 00:21:33.220
  • Pray with faith!
  • 00:21:33.250 --> 00:21:35.250
  • Not with sympathy, not with weakness.
  • 00:21:35.280 --> 00:21:37.250
  • Not with timidity.
  • 00:21:37.280 --> 00:21:39.080
  • Pray with authority.
  • 00:21:39.110 --> 00:21:40.190
  • Pray as though you're not talking to some distant deity
  • 00:21:40.220 --> 00:21:42.230
  • from Israel.
  • 00:21:42.260 --> 00:21:44.100
  • You are talking to your dad who has all the ability to do
  • 00:21:44.130 --> 00:21:49.110
  • what you need him to do.
  • 00:21:49.140 --> 00:21:51.210
  • I love it when people pray that way.
  • 00:21:51.240 --> 00:21:53.240
  • And I'm still learning in that way.
  • 00:21:53.270 --> 00:21:55.100
  • But I believe it to be so.
  • 00:21:55.130 --> 00:21:56.210
  • It's uncomfortable but it's good.
  • 00:21:56.240 --> 00:21:59.080
  • So pray with faith not sympathy.
  • 00:21:59.110 --> 00:22:01.210
  • Number two, when you're waiting,
  • 00:22:01.240 --> 00:22:04.290
  • and we all have to wait sometimes.
  • 00:22:05.020 --> 00:22:07.040
  • Wait in faith, not in worry.
  • 00:22:07.070 --> 00:22:11.110
  • Worry will ruin your life.
  • 00:22:11.140 --> 00:22:14.170
  • The word for worry or anxiety in the Bible is merimnao.
  • 00:22:14.200 --> 00:22:17.130
  • It literally means to be pulled into pieces.
  • 00:22:17.160 --> 00:22:21.060
  • It's rooted in another word that means to be suffocated
  • 00:22:21.090 --> 00:22:23.290
  • or choked.
  • 00:22:24.020 --> 00:22:25.120
  • Don't let worry ruin your life.
  • 00:22:25.150 --> 00:22:28.120
  • So many of us, our present is ruined because we're worrying
  • 00:22:28.150 --> 00:22:31.240
  • about something that may or may not happen in the future.
  • 00:22:31.270 --> 00:22:34.210
  • We're letting our mind spin out of control, thinking about what
  • 00:22:34.240 --> 00:22:37.110
  • if this happens, what if that happens, what if that doesn't
  • 00:22:37.140 --> 00:22:39.030
  • happen? I've gotta plan this. Everything has to be perfect.
  • 00:22:39.060 --> 00:22:41.100
  • It's not gonna be perfect.
  • 00:22:41.130 --> 00:22:43.020
  • Let go of your perfectionism.
  • 00:22:43.050 --> 00:22:44.280
  • Let go of needing to plan everything out.
  • 00:22:45.010 --> 00:22:46.270
  • Let go of clarity.
  • 00:22:47.000 --> 00:22:48.160
  • Clarity is the last thing you're holding onto.
  • 00:22:48.190 --> 00:22:50.260
  • Let that go too.
  • 00:22:50.290 --> 00:22:52.090
  • And just say, "Lord, I'm letting this go because you do a better
  • 00:22:52.120 --> 00:22:56.160
  • job of holding on to things than I do."
  • 00:22:56.190 --> 00:22:59.280
  • That's faith.
  • 00:23:00.030 --> 00:23:01.150
  • So when you're waiting, wait with faith, not with worry.
  • 00:23:01.180 --> 00:23:05.240
  • And just smile and enjoy your moment, your present.
  • 00:23:05.270 --> 00:23:10.120
  • Enjoy your day, enjoy your hour with the people you love
  • 00:23:10.150 --> 00:23:14.060
  • 'cause that, that's what really matters.
  • 00:23:14.090 --> 00:23:16.020
  • Don't let your worries about the future poison you
  • 00:23:16.050 --> 00:23:17.140
  • because you worry.
  • 00:23:17.170 --> 00:23:19.030
  • Your future's awesome.
  • 00:23:19.060 --> 00:23:20.170
  • It's gonna be awesome.
  • 00:23:20.200 --> 00:23:21.280
  • That's a promise from God.
  • 00:23:22.010 --> 00:23:24.160
  • Number three, when you act, act with faith, not second-guessing.
  • 00:23:24.190 --> 00:23:31.060
  • And this is so important.
  • 00:23:31.090 --> 00:23:33.040
  • See, so many Christians, they get--they begin a project or
  • 00:23:33.070 --> 00:23:36.010
  • begin doing something and then they get--their minds,
  • 00:23:36.040 --> 00:23:38.140
  • again, worry.
  • 00:23:38.170 --> 00:23:40.020
  • They, like, they'd be second-guessing everything.
  • 00:23:40.050 --> 00:23:43.060
  • I think faith pleases God, not second-guessing.
  • 00:23:43.090 --> 00:23:46.210
  • One of the first things the devil did is when he said
  • 00:23:46.240 --> 00:23:50.050
  • to Adam and Eve, "Did God really say?"
  • 00:23:50.080 --> 00:23:53.090
  • If God put a word on your heart, believe it.
  • 00:23:53.120 --> 00:23:55.240
  • And act with faith and boldness.
  • 00:23:55.270 --> 00:23:58.030
  • Learn from Jonah.
  • 00:23:58.060 --> 00:24:00.020
  • If you act with boldness but go in the opposite direction
  • 00:24:00.050 --> 00:24:03.110
  • of your destiny, God will send a whale to turn you around.
  • 00:24:03.140 --> 00:24:08.150
  • I believe, though, if Jonah had just stayed in Israel and not
  • 00:24:08.180 --> 00:24:12.120
  • ran away to go to Tarsus, he would have stayed in Israel
  • 00:24:12.150 --> 00:24:16.100
  • and never made it to Nineveh.
  • 00:24:16.130 --> 00:24:18.050
  • I believe that the greatest danger to the church is not
  • 00:24:18.080 --> 00:24:22.040
  • people moving towards some wrong direction with boldness
  • 00:24:22.070 --> 00:24:26.110
  • and confidence and enthusiasm.
  • 00:24:26.140 --> 00:24:28.100
  • The greatest danger of the church is Christians who keep
  • 00:24:28.130 --> 00:24:31.140
  • spinning their wheels and never do anything great for God.
  • 00:24:31.170 --> 00:24:36.170
  • My grandpa said, "I'd rather strive to do great things
  • 00:24:36.200 --> 00:24:41.090
  • and fail than strive to do nothing and succeed."
  • 00:24:41.120 --> 00:24:45.120
  • So when you--when God gives you a word
  • 00:24:45.150 --> 00:24:47.210
  • and you're pretty sure it's from God,
  • 00:24:47.240 --> 00:24:49.190
  • maybe you're not 100% but you think it is, just go for it!
  • 00:24:49.220 --> 00:24:52.290
  • One hundred percent with all your heart and don't give up.
  • 00:24:53.020 --> 00:24:57.050
  • Because even if you're going the wrong direction, I think God is
  • 00:24:57.080 --> 00:24:59.280
  • so pleased by boldness and enthusiasm, by faith, that he
  • 00:25:00.030 --> 00:25:04.150
  • will still honor you and push you in the right direction.
  • 00:25:04.180 --> 00:25:07.260
  • So when you act, don't second-guess yourself.
  • 00:25:07.290 --> 00:25:11.060
  • Just go for it.
  • 00:25:11.090 --> 00:25:13.220
  • Faith pleases God.
  • 00:25:13.250 --> 00:25:17.120
  • Well, I wanna offer you just an opportunity before you leave.
  • 00:25:17.150 --> 00:25:21.020
  • Are you at peace with God?
  • 00:25:21.050 --> 00:25:24.050
  • I wanna do just a quick--normally, we invite
  • 00:25:24.080 --> 00:25:26.210
  • everyone to come forward but just where you are, if you want
  • 00:25:26.240 --> 00:25:30.000
  • to have your life right with God, I'm gonna lead everyone
  • 00:25:30.030 --> 00:25:32.170
  • in a prayer where we can put our faith in him.
  • 00:25:32.200 --> 00:25:35.050
  • So would you hold your hands out like this?
  • 00:25:35.080 --> 00:25:37.090
  • And if you're not a Christian and you say this with me,
  • 00:25:37.120 --> 00:25:39.280
  • it's gonna make you a Christian. Say it with me.
  • 00:25:40.010 --> 00:25:42.130
  • Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.
  • 00:25:42.160 --> 00:25:46.200
  • Transform my life.
  • 00:25:46.230 --> 00:25:50.190
  • I am the beloved of God.
  • 00:25:50.220 --> 00:25:53.130
  • I am the righteousness of Christ.
  • 00:25:53.160 --> 00:25:56.200
  • I am above and not beneath.
  • 00:25:56.230 --> 00:26:00.130
  • I am the head and not the tail.
  • 00:26:00.160 --> 00:26:03.090
  • I will inherit heaven according to your will for me
  • 00:26:03.120 --> 00:26:08.270
  • and according to your Word.
  • 00:26:09.000 --> 00:26:12.040
  • It is so in Jesus' name, amen, amen.
  • 00:26:12.070 --> 00:26:18.240
  • [applauding]
