  • [congregation applauding]
  • 00:00:00.210 --> 00:00:06.290
  • Bobby Schuller: Friends, will you hold your hands out like
  • 00:00:07.000 --> 00:00:08.090
  • this as a sign of receiving from the Lord?
  • 00:00:08.100 --> 00:00:11.090
  • "I'm not what I do. I'm not what I have.
  • 00:00:11.100 --> 00:00:14.270
  • I'm not what people say about me.
  • 00:00:14.280 --> 00:00:17.230
  • I am the beloved of God. It's who I am.
  • 00:00:17.240 --> 00:00:22.010
  • No one can take it from me. I don't have to worry.
  • 00:00:22.020 --> 00:00:26.130
  • I don't have to hurry.
  • 00:00:26.140 --> 00:00:28.110
  • I can trust my friend Jesus and share his love
  • 00:00:28.120 --> 00:00:32.210
  • with this world," amen?
  • 00:00:32.220 --> 00:00:34.100
  • You can be seated.
  • 00:00:34.110 --> 00:00:37.260
  • Today we're beginning a new series called
  • 00:00:37.270 --> 00:00:41.060
  • A Simple Guide To Walking On Water.
  • 00:00:41.070 --> 00:00:45.070
  • This is going to be a theme about faith, which is a constant
  • 00:00:45.080 --> 00:00:50.210
  • command in the Scriptures that is opposed to the feelings
  • 00:00:50.220 --> 00:00:54.110
  • of dread and fear.
  • 00:00:54.120 --> 00:00:56.140
  • Of course, the greatest command in the Bible is,
  • 00:00:56.150 --> 00:00:58.220
  • "Do not be afraid.
  • 00:00:58.230 --> 00:01:00.070
  • Do not worry. Do not fear."
  • 00:01:00.080 --> 00:01:01.260
  • And faith is the opposite of fear.
  • 00:01:01.270 --> 00:01:03.160
  • Faith is the thing that fosters joy, fosters possibilities
  • 00:01:03.170 --> 00:01:08.140
  • and hope, and it cultivates the calling of God in your life.
  • 00:01:08.150 --> 00:01:13.120
  • Faith is the thing that makes you what you were called to be.
  • 00:01:13.130 --> 00:01:17.110
  • And so, we're gonna spend 6 weeks doing our best to
  • 00:01:17.120 --> 00:01:20.280
  • understand as a community what it means to not only have faith,
  • 00:01:20.290 --> 00:01:24.200
  • but to release our faith in the midst of a hurting and broken
  • 00:01:24.210 --> 00:01:28.070
  • world, in the midst of our challenges, in the midst
  • 00:01:28.080 --> 00:01:31.270
  • of our unfinished symphonies, in the midst of our letdowns,
  • 00:01:31.280 --> 00:01:35.100
  • in our ruts.
  • 00:01:35.110 --> 00:01:36.270
  • We're gonna learn what it means to serve a limitless God.
  • 00:01:36.280 --> 00:01:40.000
  • So, faith, faith is trust, trust that in spite of my
  • 00:01:40.010 --> 00:01:46.130
  • current experience, good things are coming.
  • 00:01:46.140 --> 00:01:50.100
  • Faith is clinging on to God
  • 00:01:50.110 --> 00:01:52.260
  • instead of clinging on to clarity.
  • 00:01:52.270 --> 00:01:55.160
  • So, what's happening in your life today?
  • 00:01:55.170 --> 00:01:57.270
  • What are you bringing here?
  • 00:01:57.280 --> 00:01:59.070
  • If you can have anything from God,
  • 00:01:59.080 --> 00:02:02.010
  • what would you want from him?
  • 00:02:02.020 --> 00:02:04.280
  • I believe that many of the desires that you have
  • 00:02:04.290 --> 00:02:07.140
  • that you think are selfish are actually from God
  • 00:02:07.150 --> 00:02:09.270
  • and that God's gonna do great things in your life.
  • 00:02:09.280 --> 00:02:12.150
  • And for many of you as you have faith, he's gonna bring
  • 00:02:12.160 --> 00:02:16.010
  • the things that you want.
  • 00:02:16.020 --> 00:02:17.180
  • Faith is the fuel of breakthrough.
  • 00:02:17.190 --> 00:02:23.050
  • Faith, for whatever reason, seems to be the thing that
  • 00:02:23.060 --> 00:02:26.220
  • causes hope against hope, great things to happen
  • 00:02:26.230 --> 00:02:30.180
  • when we think everything is over.
  • 00:02:30.190 --> 00:02:33.130
  • Faith is the fuel of breakthrough.
  • 00:02:33.140 --> 00:02:35.260
  • It is the thing that we use when we have nothing left
  • 00:02:35.270 --> 00:02:40.100
  • that gives us hope, and faith does not disappoint
  • 00:02:40.110 --> 00:02:43.220
  • because God is faithful.
  • 00:02:43.230 --> 00:02:45.210
  • Have faith that your greatest days are ahead
  • 00:02:45.220 --> 00:02:48.190
  • because they are.
  • 00:02:48.200 --> 00:02:50.110
  • The only one who can throw away your tomorrow is
  • 00:02:50.120 --> 00:02:52.070
  • you so cling to God.
  • 00:02:52.080 --> 00:02:54.090
  • He's gonna get you through.
  • 00:02:54.100 --> 00:02:56.110
  • Faith is trust in God even though I don't know
  • 00:02:56.120 --> 00:03:00.220
  • what the heck is happening.
  • 00:03:00.230 --> 00:03:03.210
  • Faith is trusting that regardless of whatever
  • 00:03:03.220 --> 00:03:05.290
  • is happening around me, I know God loves me,
  • 00:03:06.000 --> 00:03:08.170
  • that he has the power to bring a breakthrough.
  • 00:03:08.180 --> 00:03:10.220
  • And you have faith and today you're gonna learn to release it
  • 00:03:10.230 --> 00:03:13.290
  • and live, and walk by faith, and not walk by sight.
  • 00:03:14.000 --> 00:03:19.130
  • You're a world changer.
  • 00:03:19.140 --> 00:03:20.190
  • God's gonna do great things through you but you need faith.
  • 00:03:20.200 --> 00:03:24.230
  • Faith is the belief that my life is not limited
  • 00:03:24.240 --> 00:03:29.220
  • to what I am currently experiencing.
  • 00:03:29.230 --> 00:03:31.230
  • Faith is the belief that regardless of what is happening
  • 00:03:33.260 --> 00:03:36.170
  • around me, it's not limited to that and good things are coming
  • 00:03:36.180 --> 00:03:41.040
  • and they are coming for you.
  • 00:03:41.050 --> 00:03:42.140
  • Faith does not believe that God is punishing me
  • 00:03:42.150 --> 00:03:48.070
  • and he's not.
  • 00:03:48.080 --> 00:03:49.170
  • God is not punishing you. I need you to hear that.
  • 00:03:49.180 --> 00:03:55.280
  • The devil is called the accuser of the brethren.
  • 00:03:55.290 --> 00:03:58.190
  • The Holy Spirit is called the comforter.
  • 00:03:58.200 --> 00:04:01.290
  • All the punishment that you think you would
  • 00:04:02.000 --> 00:04:03.240
  • have received is on the cross of Jesus Christ.
  • 00:04:03.250 --> 00:04:07.040
  • God is not punishing you.
  • 00:04:07.050 --> 00:04:10.010
  • God is not punishing you.
  • 00:04:10.040 --> 00:04:13.040
  • He's not punishing you.
  • 00:04:13.050 --> 00:04:15.060
  • In Christianity, we believe that Jesus shows us what God is like.
  • 00:04:15.070 --> 00:04:21.120
  • Jesus Christ is the lens through which we should view
  • 00:04:21.130 --> 00:04:25.100
  • and interpret all of Scripture and all of our life experience.
  • 00:04:25.110 --> 00:04:30.250
  • You ever see Jesus make anybody sick?
  • 00:04:30.260 --> 00:04:33.030
  • You ever see Jesus hurt somebody because they sin?
  • 00:04:33.040 --> 00:04:39.240
  • He might have kicked over a couple of tables,
  • 00:04:39.250 --> 00:04:42.200
  • but he didn't hurt anybody.
  • 00:04:42.210 --> 00:04:44.210
  • In fact, when people come to Jesus, he heals them.
  • 00:04:45.070 --> 00:04:49.210
  • He gives dignity to outcasts.
  • 00:04:49.220 --> 00:04:52.110
  • He loves the people that religious people love to reject.
  • 00:04:52.120 --> 00:04:55.190
  • In fact, he loves them most.
  • 00:04:55.200 --> 00:04:58.040
  • He invites hurting to his table.
  • 00:04:58.050 --> 00:05:00.280
  • He brings forgiveness, reconciliation,
  • 00:05:00.290 --> 00:05:04.020
  • life, love, purpose.
  • 00:05:04.030 --> 00:05:07.080
  • God is not punishing you, he is blessing you.
  • 00:05:07.090 --> 00:05:11.170
  • And you say, "I don't have enough faith."
  • 00:05:11.180 --> 00:05:13.050
  • You don't need a lot!
  • 00:05:13.060 --> 00:05:15.230
  • Guess how much faith you need? You need a mustard seed.
  • 00:05:15.240 --> 00:05:18.260
  • It's so small that if I was holding it,
  • 00:05:18.270 --> 00:05:20.110
  • you wouldn't be able to see it in my hand.
  • 00:05:20.120 --> 00:05:22.010
  • We think we need to have 100% faith all the time
  • 00:05:22.020 --> 00:05:25.150
  • to get what we need.
  • 00:05:25.160 --> 00:05:26.250
  • You don't.
  • 00:05:26.260 --> 00:05:28.050
  • You need just enough faith to not let go, that's all.
  • 00:05:28.060 --> 00:05:31.280
  • If you have 1% of you is faith and 99% of you is doubt,
  • 00:05:31.290 --> 00:05:37.100
  • that's enough.
  • 00:05:37.110 --> 00:05:38.200
  • If you give that 1% to God and live and act just on that little
  • 00:05:38.210 --> 00:05:43.130
  • grain of faith, God can use that to move mountains.
  • 00:05:43.140 --> 00:05:47.120
  • You don't need to have mountain faith to move mountains.
  • 00:05:47.130 --> 00:05:51.000
  • You need a tiny, little bit of mustard seed faith
  • 00:05:51.010 --> 00:05:54.140
  • to move the earth.
  • 00:05:54.150 --> 00:05:55.240
  • That's all you need because God's the one doing
  • 00:05:55.250 --> 00:05:57.160
  • the moving, not you.
  • 00:05:57.170 --> 00:05:58.290
  • So, you can relax.
  • 00:05:59.000 --> 00:06:00.200
  • You can smile today. You can have faith.
  • 00:06:00.210 --> 00:06:04.000
  • And even though a bunch of you doubts,
  • 00:06:04.010 --> 00:06:05.210
  • if you got just a little faith, that's all God needs
  • 00:06:05.220 --> 00:06:07.270
  • to move in your life.
  • 00:06:07.280 --> 00:06:09.100
  • If you have the faith, God has the power.
  • 00:06:09.110 --> 00:06:11.170
  • congregation: Amen.
  • 00:06:11.180 --> 00:06:13.090
  • Bobby: All right.
  • 00:06:13.100 --> 00:06:16.120
  • Hebrews 11, "Faith is the substance of things
  • 00:06:16.130 --> 00:06:20.040
  • hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."
  • 00:06:20.050 --> 00:06:21.280
  • If you've grown up in church, you probably memorized
  • 00:06:21.290 --> 00:06:23.150
  • that or the N.I.V. says, "The confidence in what we hope for
  • 00:06:23.160 --> 00:06:27.140
  • and the assurance about what we do not see.
  • 00:06:27.150 --> 00:06:29.200
  • This is what the ancients were commended for."
  • 00:06:29.210 --> 00:06:32.170
  • And this is really the most defining thing.
  • 00:06:32.180 --> 00:06:34.130
  • "By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God's
  • 00:06:34.140 --> 00:06:38.060
  • command so that what is seen is not made
  • 00:06:38.070 --> 00:06:42.000
  • out of what is visible."
  • 00:06:42.010 --> 00:06:43.100
  • This is faith.
  • 00:06:43.110 --> 00:06:44.210
  • Faith is the belief that what we see is a stage
  • 00:06:44.220 --> 00:06:48.170
  • and that there's a whole world behind the curtain,
  • 00:06:48.180 --> 00:06:51.120
  • that everything that's on the stage
  • 00:06:51.130 --> 00:06:53.270
  • came from behind the stage, the set and everything
  • 00:06:53.280 --> 00:06:56.260
  • that we're looking up, and as it's set up,
  • 00:06:56.270 --> 00:06:58.240
  • will also be torn down, that there are players,
  • 00:06:58.250 --> 00:07:01.130
  • and there is a script, and there is a director
  • 00:07:01.140 --> 00:07:03.120
  • of all of the stuff that is happening,
  • 00:07:03.130 --> 00:07:04.280
  • that's really what faith is.
  • 00:07:04.290 --> 00:07:06.290
  • Faith is the belief that what is seen is a result of what's
  • 00:07:07.000 --> 00:07:09.100
  • happening in the unseen, that's why Christians believe
  • 00:07:09.110 --> 00:07:11.100
  • in prayer so much.
  • 00:07:11.110 --> 00:07:13.120
  • We believe that what happens in a spiritual realm is what
  • 00:07:13.130 --> 00:07:15.280
  • ultimately will happen and what we're experiencing in this life
  • 00:07:15.290 --> 00:07:18.070
  • right now and that's why we're not convinced by what happens
  • 00:07:18.080 --> 00:07:22.280
  • in our life experience.
  • 00:07:22.290 --> 00:07:24.090
  • We're convinced by the Word of God.
  • 00:07:24.100 --> 00:07:26.130
  • God is the thing that never changes and that is what gives
  • 00:07:26.140 --> 00:07:29.100
  • us a picture of what's happening behind all of this, that God is
  • 00:07:29.110 --> 00:07:33.150
  • at work in your life and he's gonna give you
  • 00:07:33.160 --> 00:07:36.180
  • the breakthrough that you need.
  • 00:07:36.190 --> 00:07:38.150
  • So, Hebrews 11 uses the example of Abraham and that's the story
  • 00:07:38.160 --> 00:07:43.020
  • we're gonna look at today.
  • 00:07:43.030 --> 00:07:44.120
  • Abraham is an amazing story.
  • 00:07:44.130 --> 00:07:46.170
  • If you don't come from a Jewish or Christian tradition,
  • 00:07:46.180 --> 00:07:49.060
  • you don't know the story, Abram is his original name.
  • 00:07:49.070 --> 00:07:53.040
  • Abram was called from this land of the Chaldeans,
  • 00:07:53.050 --> 00:07:57.200
  • this one little guy.
  • 00:07:57.210 --> 00:07:59.230
  • In the Bible as you read at the beginning, there's the fall and
  • 00:07:59.240 --> 00:08:03.040
  • man is separated from God, and there's this kind of long period
  • 00:08:03.050 --> 00:08:07.170
  • in the Bible where it feels like God sort of disappears
  • 00:08:07.180 --> 00:08:11.250
  • for a while, almost like he's grieving,
  • 00:08:11.260 --> 00:08:14.220
  • that his creation has fallen into the grip of sin and death.
  • 00:08:14.230 --> 00:08:18.190
  • And he decides to begin a new story through one man named
  • 00:08:18.200 --> 00:08:24.200
  • Abram, a little guy in the Middle East somewhere
  • 00:08:24.210 --> 00:08:28.210
  • and he decides for whatever reason, "I'm gonna pick
  • 00:08:28.220 --> 00:08:31.110
  • this man to save the whole world."
  • 00:08:31.120 --> 00:08:35.010
  • Abram is 70 when God calls him.
  • 00:08:35.020 --> 00:08:40.020
  • The word "Abram" by the way, means exalted father.
  • 00:08:42.050 --> 00:08:46.040
  • And can you imagine that Abram, his whole life,
  • 00:08:46.050 --> 00:08:48.120
  • even from when he was a child was called exalted father.
  • 00:08:48.130 --> 00:08:53.270
  • "Exalted father, take out the trash.
  • 00:08:53.280 --> 00:08:58.290
  • Exalted father, do your homework.
  • 00:08:59.000 --> 00:09:04.030
  • Will you marry me? My name's exalted father."
  • 00:09:04.040 --> 00:09:08.030
  • And exalted father goes through his life never
  • 00:09:08.040 --> 00:09:11.060
  • becoming a father.
  • 00:09:11.070 --> 00:09:13.160
  • Now, 70 years old, his whole life called exalted father,
  • 00:09:13.170 --> 00:09:20.100
  • exalted father.
  • 00:09:20.110 --> 00:09:22.080
  • And here he is, he's built immense wealth,
  • 00:09:22.090 --> 00:09:28.080
  • done incredible things in his life.
  • 00:09:28.090 --> 00:09:30.280
  • No children to pass it on to which especially in his day
  • 00:09:30.290 --> 00:09:34.000
  • was shameful in a way in the ancient world.
  • 00:09:34.010 --> 00:09:38.000
  • He was gonna pass it on to a servant of his
  • 00:09:38.010 --> 00:09:41.220
  • and yet his whole life he's gonna exalted
  • 00:09:41.230 --> 00:09:44.070
  • father as though it's like a cruel joke.
  • 00:09:44.080 --> 00:09:46.030
  • And one day, he hears a whisper from this God Yahweh who says,
  • 00:09:46.040 --> 00:09:54.220
  • "Abram, I've chosen you and I want you to leave the land of
  • 00:09:54.230 --> 00:09:58.100
  • your fathers to a land I've prepared for you,
  • 00:09:58.110 --> 00:10:01.240
  • and this will be a Promised Land,
  • 00:10:01.250 --> 00:10:06.180
  • and it will be the place in which all of mankind
  • 00:10:06.190 --> 00:10:11.060
  • will be redeemed back to me because of a covenant
  • 00:10:11.070 --> 00:10:15.230
  • I'm making with you."
  • 00:10:15.240 --> 00:10:17.030
  • And God says to Abram, "You will not be Abram.
  • 00:10:17.040 --> 00:10:21.020
  • You won't just be a father, an exalted father,
  • 00:10:21.030 --> 00:10:23.020
  • you'll be Abraham.
  • 00:10:23.030 --> 00:10:25.230
  • Abraham, look at the sky. You see the stars?
  • 00:10:25.240 --> 00:10:30.260
  • All the stars in the sky will be less than the amount of children
  • 00:10:30.270 --> 00:10:38.180
  • that you will have.
  • 00:10:38.190 --> 00:10:40.190
  • They will be countless.
  • 00:10:40.200 --> 00:10:42.210
  • They will be numerous, and I will be in covenant with them,
  • 00:10:42.220 --> 00:10:47.080
  • and they will be my people, and they will be a blessing
  • 00:10:47.090 --> 00:10:50.100
  • to the world.
  • 00:10:50.110 --> 00:10:51.200
  • And through them, O Father of many nations,
  • 00:10:51.210 --> 00:10:55.090
  • I'm going to save mankind."
  • 00:10:55.100 --> 00:10:58.150
  • Abraham trusted God and it was accredited
  • 00:10:58.160 --> 00:11:01.210
  • to him as righteousness.
  • 00:11:01.220 --> 00:11:03.170
  • How long was it before the 75-year-old man
  • 00:11:03.180 --> 00:11:08.200
  • would have his son?
  • 00:11:08.210 --> 00:11:10.260
  • He would be 100 years old, and Sarah would be 90
  • 00:11:10.270 --> 00:11:15.070
  • before they had Isaac.
  • 00:11:15.080 --> 00:11:19.000
  • And there it is.
  • 00:11:19.010 --> 00:11:21.150
  • So, he's already an old man, not too old, everybody.
  • 00:11:21.160 --> 00:11:25.100
  • He's an old man, 75 but old enough may we all admit,
  • 00:11:25.110 --> 00:11:30.220
  • too old maybe to have-- especially his wife Sarah
  • 00:11:30.230 --> 00:11:32.230
  • who's 65, to have a kid.
  • 00:11:32.240 --> 00:11:35.100
  • And God, you know, he's gonna do a miracle
  • 00:11:35.110 --> 00:11:38.180
  • and it's 25 years before Sarah's pregnant.
  • 00:11:38.190 --> 00:11:43.220
  • She's 90 years old.
  • 00:11:43.230 --> 00:11:45.200
  • Would you say that's a miracle? That's a miracle.
  • 00:11:45.210 --> 00:11:49.220
  • And she's gonna have this child and she has the child Isaac.
  • 00:11:49.230 --> 00:11:53.190
  • And can you imagine how much this 100-year-old man
  • 00:11:53.200 --> 00:11:59.070
  • and 90-year-old woman love this newborn baby?
  • 00:11:59.080 --> 00:12:05.080
  • Look, I know they ate organic back then,
  • 00:12:05.090 --> 00:12:07.210
  • but that's not why she got pregnant.
  • 00:12:07.220 --> 00:12:11.070
  • It was a work of God.
  • 00:12:11.080 --> 00:12:12.170
  • And so here now this is the promise and later it's
  • 00:12:12.180 --> 00:12:16.140
  • confirmed, the promise will happen through this baby,
  • 00:12:16.150 --> 00:12:19.100
  • through Isaac, not just through a kid, but through him.
  • 00:12:19.110 --> 00:12:23.090
  • So, this promise has been made to Abraham and Sarah
  • 00:12:23.100 --> 00:12:26.190
  • and now Isaac is about 15 years old,
  • 00:12:26.200 --> 00:12:28.210
  • something like that.
  • 00:12:28.220 --> 00:12:30.010
  • He's almost a full-grown guy.
  • 00:12:30.020 --> 00:12:32.180
  • Abraham is in his hundreds and God says, "Abraham,
  • 00:12:32.190 --> 00:12:38.080
  • I want you to prove that you trust me."
  • 00:12:38.090 --> 00:12:41.070
  • I know this seems bizarre in the modern west.
  • 00:12:41.080 --> 00:12:43.240
  • "But I want you to take this kid and I want you to sacrifice him
  • 00:12:43.250 --> 00:12:49.120
  • on an altar for me.
  • 00:12:49.130 --> 00:12:53.010
  • Abraham, I want you to sacrifice your miracle to prove
  • 00:12:53.020 --> 00:12:56.230
  • that you trust me."
  • 00:12:56.240 --> 00:12:58.030
  • Do you know what was going through Abraham's mind?
  • 00:12:58.040 --> 00:13:00.120
  • I don't.
  • 00:13:00.130 --> 00:13:04.060
  • "Is this God a cruel jokester? What is happening here?"
  • 00:13:04.070 --> 00:13:08.250
  • You understand, Abraham doesn't know this God.
  • 00:13:08.260 --> 00:13:11.140
  • He's learning about who this God is and he's trying to figure out
  • 00:13:11.150 --> 00:13:16.040
  • in a world of many gods who this now claiming one God is.
  • 00:13:16.050 --> 00:13:21.240
  • And so, he brings Isaac to the this altar,
  • 00:13:21.250 --> 00:13:25.100
  • and I don't think Isaac thought God was a trickster,
  • 00:13:25.110 --> 00:13:28.040
  • or a liar, or a hoaxster.
  • 00:13:28.050 --> 00:13:30.270
  • I think so many awesome things had happened in Abraham's life
  • 00:13:30.280 --> 00:13:35.250
  • that he just expected that no matter what, somehow this
  • 00:13:35.260 --> 00:13:39.270
  • was good even though this was completely horrible
  • 00:13:39.280 --> 00:13:43.190
  • and looked even demonic.
  • 00:13:43.200 --> 00:13:46.180
  • In fact, that's the point.
  • 00:13:46.190 --> 00:13:48.130
  • When Abraham brings Isaac to the altar, Hebrews says he believes
  • 00:13:48.140 --> 00:13:53.220
  • that even if he killed his son Isaac that God would just raise
  • 00:13:53.230 --> 00:13:56.130
  • him back from the dead, that's how strong his faith was
  • 00:13:56.140 --> 00:14:01.050
  • and obviously so.
  • 00:14:01.060 --> 00:14:02.150
  • When you read Genesis and see the things that God brought
  • 00:14:02.160 --> 00:14:05.060
  • Abraham through, his faith was so immense, he trusted God
  • 00:14:05.070 --> 00:14:09.060
  • so much that he would be true to his Word, that the covenant
  • 00:14:09.070 --> 00:14:13.010
  • would be fulfilled through Isaac, that even if he killed
  • 00:14:13.020 --> 00:14:15.080
  • Isaac at God's command, Isaac would be raised from the dead.
  • 00:14:15.090 --> 00:14:18.080
  • And you know why God did this?
  • 00:14:18.090 --> 00:14:20.140
  • As weird as it seems to us in the ancient near east,
  • 00:14:20.150 --> 00:14:22.290
  • it was a bloody, murderous, violent world
  • 00:14:23.000 --> 00:14:26.230
  • in which the gods hated people.
  • 00:14:26.240 --> 00:14:29.060
  • And when God withheld Abraham, it was a dramatic way of saying,
  • 00:14:29.070 --> 00:14:33.100
  • "I'm not that kind of God.
  • 00:14:33.110 --> 00:14:35.250
  • I'm for you and you can trust me.
  • 00:14:35.260 --> 00:14:40.160
  • And I love you."
  • 00:14:40.170 --> 00:14:42.170
  • And he does.
  • 00:14:42.180 --> 00:14:44.180
  • The most important thing we can pull from this story is that
  • 00:14:44.190 --> 00:14:49.000
  • faith is trust, that even though I don't know what the heck is
  • 00:14:49.010 --> 00:14:52.240
  • going on, I have no idea where I'm going, I know it's good.
  • 00:14:52.250 --> 00:14:57.180
  • Faith is trusting and holding on to the loving hand of
  • 00:14:57.190 --> 00:15:01.070
  • a very strong, very good, very smart God, the only God
  • 00:15:01.080 --> 00:15:06.060
  • who has a plan for my life.
  • 00:15:06.070 --> 00:15:08.210
  • So, you can trust God. You can trust God.
  • 00:15:08.220 --> 00:15:12.020
  • Your life is not limited to what you're currently experiencing.
  • 00:15:12.030 --> 00:15:17.100
  • Your life is limitless, boundless, believe it.
  • 00:15:17.110 --> 00:15:21.010
  • Trust in the Lord that he has good things in store for you.
  • 00:15:21.020 --> 00:15:25.210
  • It is time for you to get a fresh vision for your life.
  • 00:15:25.220 --> 00:15:32.260
  • What's the vision for your life?
  • 00:15:32.270 --> 00:15:35.200
  • You may not know it but all of us sort of have a vision
  • 00:15:35.210 --> 00:15:38.140
  • for our lives.
  • 00:15:38.150 --> 00:15:41.040
  • Some of you, your vision is to play video games in your mom's
  • 00:15:41.050 --> 00:15:44.050
  • basement the rest of your life.
  • 00:15:44.060 --> 00:15:45.150
  • I see a couple people shrugging in the back.
  • 00:15:45.160 --> 00:15:53.020
  • What's the vision for your life?
  • 00:15:53.030 --> 00:15:55.270
  • And whatever your vision is, God has a bigger one
  • 00:15:55.280 --> 00:16:00.060
  • in store for you.
  • 00:16:00.070 --> 00:16:01.190
  • And I want to challenge you to stop saying, "I'm too old."
  • 00:16:01.200 --> 00:16:06.240
  • I'm so glad Abraham didn't say that.
  • 00:16:06.250 --> 00:16:08.190
  • I want to encourage you to stop saying,
  • 00:16:08.200 --> 00:16:12.110
  • "I can't do that, I can't learn,
  • 00:16:12.120 --> 00:16:13.270
  • I'm not smart enough."
  • 00:16:13.280 --> 00:16:15.250
  • I believe that if you are alive, God has a vision for your life
  • 00:16:15.260 --> 00:16:20.060
  • and it's not just relaxing or playing golf or whatever.
  • 00:16:20.070 --> 00:16:25.140
  • Some of you it might be.
  • 00:16:25.150 --> 00:16:27.020
  • Invite me, I love golf.
  • 00:16:27.030 --> 00:16:30.060
  • I don't mean this to sound judgmental or but to say this
  • 00:16:30.070 --> 00:16:34.040
  • that you have great things in store for your life.
  • 00:16:34.050 --> 00:16:37.180
  • You are smarter today than you have ever been.
  • 00:16:37.190 --> 00:16:41.250
  • What is the vision for your life?
  • 00:16:41.260 --> 00:16:43.190
  • God sees someone in you that no one else can see
  • 00:16:43.200 --> 00:16:47.010
  • and if you just have faith, you can become that person.
  • 00:16:47.020 --> 00:16:51.010
  • Do you believe that?
  • 00:16:51.020 --> 00:16:53.010
  • So, I want to say to you that you are limitless.
  • 00:16:53.020 --> 00:16:58.080
  • You are a dreamer.
  • 00:16:58.090 --> 00:17:00.120
  • You may have stopped dreaming lately but at one point,
  • 00:17:00.130 --> 00:17:03.020
  • you were a dreamer.
  • 00:17:03.030 --> 00:17:04.120
  • You used to dream.
  • 00:17:04.130 --> 00:17:05.220
  • When you were young when you were a kid, you would dream.
  • 00:17:05.230 --> 00:17:08.030
  • You would think about things that could be.
  • 00:17:08.040 --> 00:17:10.180
  • I mean, I remember when I was talking to my daughter Haven,
  • 00:17:10.190 --> 00:17:14.150
  • she said, "The most disappointing thing in life
  • 00:17:14.160 --> 00:17:17.120
  • is that unicorns don't exist."
  • 00:17:17.130 --> 00:17:19.090
  • And then what did she say, Han, "But mermaids do"?
  • 00:17:19.100 --> 00:17:22.190
  • Something like that.
  • 00:17:22.200 --> 00:17:25.280
  • Yeah, she said, "I want to be a unicorn, but I'd rather be
  • 00:17:25.290 --> 00:17:28.150
  • a mermaid 'cause those actually exist."
  • 00:17:28.160 --> 00:17:30.150
  • Listen.
  • 00:17:30.160 --> 00:17:32.160
  • Listen, you are a dreamer.
  • 00:17:36.090 --> 00:17:39.160
  • It's in there and that child-like dreaming that maybe
  • 00:17:39.170 --> 00:17:44.130
  • you used to have but don't have as much as you, you know,
  • 00:17:44.140 --> 00:17:47.280
  • as you did back then, that child-like dreaming
  • 00:17:47.290 --> 00:17:49.280
  • is so good for you because we're mature
  • 00:17:49.290 --> 00:17:52.180
  • to understand that these fantasies are not real,
  • 00:17:52.190 --> 00:17:54.180
  • even though they're fun, but those types of things
  • 00:17:54.190 --> 00:17:57.260
  • cause us to open our mind to real possibilities in our life.
  • 00:17:57.270 --> 00:18:02.230
  • And when we can get a vision for the possibilities in our life
  • 00:18:02.240 --> 00:18:06.060
  • and start praying over them, believing them,
  • 00:18:06.070 --> 00:18:08.070
  • and even seeing them, then we can fulfill incredible things
  • 00:18:08.080 --> 00:18:12.050
  • that God has called us to.
  • 00:18:12.060 --> 00:18:14.000
  • So many times, we are stuck in the ruts
  • 00:18:14.010 --> 00:18:16.120
  • because of a lack of imagination.
  • 00:18:16.130 --> 00:18:18.290
  • All great things are rooted in wonder and imagination.
  • 00:18:19.000 --> 00:18:23.220
  • The ability to sit back and think of things that are
  • 00:18:23.230 --> 00:18:26.050
  • completely bizarre and then one out of every ten of them
  • 00:18:26.060 --> 00:18:29.070
  • is actually a real thing that could happen and you go,
  • 00:18:29.080 --> 00:18:32.110
  • "What if that actually happened?"
  • 00:18:32.120 --> 00:18:33.240
  • And then Disneyland exists, right?
  • 00:18:33.250 --> 00:18:36.240
  • That's what dreamers do, they do fantastic things
  • 00:18:36.250 --> 00:18:40.170
  • because they don't think like is as limitless as they thought.
  • 00:18:40.180 --> 00:18:43.150
  • When I was at my prayer day at the ranch the other day,
  • 00:18:43.160 --> 00:18:45.180
  • I was looking at these two trees and my mind started to wander.
  • 00:18:45.190 --> 00:18:49.200
  • And I was like, what if those two trees were legs of a giant?
  • 00:18:49.210 --> 00:18:52.240
  • And then I like in my imagination pictured a giant
  • 00:18:52.250 --> 00:18:55.110
  • like friendly giant walking around, walks into the pond.
  • 00:18:55.120 --> 00:18:59.000
  • And I was like, whoa, what if he sat in the pond?
  • 00:18:59.010 --> 00:19:00.240
  • And then I'm picturing waves going everywhere.
  • 00:19:00.250 --> 00:19:02.160
  • And then I was like, what if I was a giant?
  • 00:19:02.170 --> 00:19:04.280
  • This is how the mind works, you know?
  • 00:19:04.290 --> 00:19:06.080
  • Now, here I'm a giant I'm like, and what if I walked down
  • 00:19:06.090 --> 00:19:09.020
  • to the 5 Freeway and walked over the freeway and?
  • 00:19:09.030 --> 00:19:13.240
  • I hadn't done that in a while.
  • 00:19:13.250 --> 00:19:15.040
  • I hadn't like had these fun like stupid things, but they're not
  • 00:19:15.050 --> 00:19:18.140
  • stupid because it trains you to begin to open that part of your
  • 00:19:18.150 --> 00:19:22.000
  • mind which although it's the place in which stories and
  • 00:19:22.010 --> 00:19:25.060
  • fantasy are located, it's also the place in which boundless
  • 00:19:25.070 --> 00:19:28.130
  • imagination is located.
  • 00:19:28.140 --> 00:19:29.250
  • That's the place where people are able to envision a new world
  • 00:19:29.260 --> 00:19:34.210
  • and it's in that place very often that God is able
  • 00:19:34.220 --> 00:19:36.290
  • to speak to us the most.
  • 00:19:37.000 --> 00:19:39.010
  • There's a reason why God likes to speak to people in their
  • 00:19:39.020 --> 00:19:41.090
  • dreams, it's 'cause in your dreams you don't have all these
  • 00:19:41.100 --> 00:19:44.200
  • silly rules that you have to follow when you're awake.
  • 00:19:44.210 --> 00:19:47.160
  • God is able to speak things into your life that your, you know,
  • 00:19:47.170 --> 00:19:51.070
  • rational western mind usually wants to reject.
  • 00:19:51.080 --> 00:19:54.140
  • He puts it in your heart when you sleep.
  • 00:19:54.150 --> 00:19:56.210
  • So anyway, every person has immeasurable potential
  • 00:19:56.220 --> 00:20:02.100
  • and their greatest limitation is right here, right here,
  • 00:20:02.110 --> 00:20:07.070
  • believing "I'm not enough
  • 00:20:07.080 --> 00:20:08.250
  • I can't do enough I can't get far enough."
  • 00:20:08.260 --> 00:20:11.180
  • So, I want to encourage you first and remind you that you
  • 00:20:11.190 --> 00:20:13.240
  • are a dreamer and that you ought to pray as a person of faith,
  • 00:20:13.250 --> 00:20:18.240
  • not a person of sympathy.
  • 00:20:18.250 --> 00:20:21.010
  • You ought not pray, "Oh, poor me."
  • 00:20:21.020 --> 00:20:23.210
  • You ought pray with faith, faith.
  • 00:20:23.220 --> 00:20:27.090
  • Pray with audacity and have the audacity to believe
  • 00:20:27.100 --> 00:20:30.100
  • that God's actually gonna do it.
  • 00:20:30.110 --> 00:20:33.000
  • Because when you pray and you get what you want,
  • 00:20:33.010 --> 00:20:35.010
  • you also get what you need.
  • 00:20:35.020 --> 00:20:36.260
  • Man, I have stopped praying that God makes my son healthy,
  • 00:20:36.270 --> 00:20:39.180
  • and I have started praying that God will make my son
  • 00:20:39.190 --> 00:20:42.060
  • a world changer.
  • 00:20:42.070 --> 00:20:44.170
  • I've--I had this picture of my son, who has epilepsy
  • 00:20:44.180 --> 00:20:48.040
  • and a brain disease, that well maybe he can
  • 00:20:48.050 --> 00:20:50.010
  • just have some semblance of a normal life.
  • 00:20:50.020 --> 00:20:52.000
  • And the Lord said, "No, stop praying for what you need
  • 00:20:52.010 --> 00:20:54.270
  • and start praying for what you want."
  • 00:20:54.280 --> 00:20:56.070
  • And I believe my son will be brilliant,
  • 00:20:56.080 --> 00:20:58.020
  • and I'm gonna pray that my son will be a world changer, amen?
  • 00:20:58.030 --> 00:21:02.180
  • [congregation applauding]
  • 00:21:02.190 --> 00:21:04.290
  • So, stop limiting God.
  • 00:21:05.000 --> 00:21:08.030
  • Stop limiting God through the small little need you want.
  • 00:21:08.040 --> 00:21:10.100
  • It might even be that God's not answering that
  • 00:21:10.110 --> 00:21:12.030
  • because he wants you to broaden your horizon.
  • 00:21:12.040 --> 00:21:13.180
  • He wants you to pray bigger prayers.
  • 00:21:13.190 --> 00:21:15.150
  • He wants you to have bigger dreams.
  • 00:21:15.160 --> 00:21:17.120
  • God is not limited to age. He is not limited by sickness.
  • 00:21:17.130 --> 00:21:23.000
  • He is not limited by lack of education.
  • 00:21:23.010 --> 00:21:25.180
  • He's not limited by race.
  • 00:21:25.190 --> 00:21:27.190
  • He's not limited by lack of experience,
  • 00:21:27.200 --> 00:21:29.150
  • only you are, and it's only here.
  • 00:21:29.160 --> 00:21:33.040
  • So, change this and change this and believe by faith and pray
  • 00:21:33.050 --> 00:21:37.270
  • with faith, not for what you need, but for what you want
  • 00:21:37.280 --> 00:21:41.060
  • and you'll get what you need and what you want because God
  • 00:21:41.070 --> 00:21:44.280
  • is a good God and faith pleases him.
  • 00:21:44.290 --> 00:21:50.290
  • You are a dreamer and you're a doer.
  • 00:21:51.000 --> 00:21:57.070
  • Faith makes us do.
  • 00:21:57.080 --> 00:21:59.100
  • Faith makes us take risks.
  • 00:21:59.110 --> 00:22:02.030
  • Faith is not worried about being embarrassed
  • 00:22:02.040 --> 00:22:04.160
  • or being proved wrong.
  • 00:22:04.170 --> 00:22:06.110
  • So, you're a doer.
  • 00:22:06.120 --> 00:22:08.050
  • It takes faith to love your enemy.
  • 00:22:08.060 --> 00:22:10.140
  • Loving your enemy is proof that you trust and have faith in God.
  • 00:22:10.150 --> 00:22:14.240
  • It takes faith to forgive someone.
  • 00:22:14.250 --> 00:22:18.080
  • It takes faith to take a risk.
  • 00:22:18.090 --> 00:22:19.270
  • It takes faith to ascribe dignity to people that you can't
  • 00:22:19.280 --> 00:22:22.150
  • stand but to believe that we all live by a higher law and that
  • 00:22:22.160 --> 00:22:26.050
  • everyone is a child of God.
  • 00:22:26.060 --> 00:22:29.010
  • It takes faith to face your fears.
  • 00:22:29.020 --> 00:22:31.240
  • If you're afraid of heights, it takes faith to go
  • 00:22:31.250 --> 00:22:33.060
  • on a roller coster.
  • 00:22:33.070 --> 00:22:35.240
  • You're a doer.
  • 00:22:35.250 --> 00:22:37.050
  • Faith is activating you in the things you do and that's a good
  • 00:22:37.060 --> 00:22:39.260
  • thing and you are trusting.
  • 00:22:39.270 --> 00:22:41.200
  • And let me just finish with this last thought,
  • 00:22:41.210 --> 00:22:44.060
  • faith is trust, not clarity.
  • 00:22:44.070 --> 00:22:49.020
  • Brennan Manning tells a story about John Kavanaugh
  • 00:22:49.030 --> 00:22:51.070
  • who traveled thousands of miles to meet Mother Teresa
  • 00:22:51.080 --> 00:22:56.130
  • to ask her to pray for him that he would have clarity.
  • 00:22:56.140 --> 00:23:02.080
  • And he finally got an audience with her and he said,
  • 00:23:02.090 --> 00:23:03.290
  • "Mother Teresa, I want you to pray for clarity for me."
  • 00:23:04.000 --> 00:23:07.180
  • And she said, "No."
  • 00:23:07.190 --> 00:23:09.160
  • He said, "But I've traveled thousands of miles
  • 00:23:09.170 --> 00:23:11.120
  • that you'd pray for clarity for me."
  • 00:23:11.130 --> 00:23:13.010
  • She said, "No, I'm not gonna pray for that."
  • 00:23:13.020 --> 00:23:14.250
  • And he said, "But you have clarity."
  • 00:23:14.260 --> 00:23:16.170
  • She says, "No, I've never had clarity, I've only had trust.
  • 00:23:16.180 --> 00:23:20.110
  • And I will pray that you trust God because clarity
  • 00:23:20.120 --> 00:23:22.270
  • is the last thing that you're clinging on to.
  • 00:23:22.280 --> 00:23:25.200
  • You want to cling on to answers, but you need to cling on to God
  • 00:23:25.210 --> 00:23:28.230
  • because he is the answer."
  • 00:23:28.240 --> 00:23:32.020
  • Many of us, the weirdest thing about walking by faith is that
  • 00:23:32.030 --> 00:23:40.210
  • we don't know where we're going, we just know it's good.
  • 00:23:40.220 --> 00:23:43.060
  • Am I right?
  • 00:23:43.070 --> 00:23:45.020
  • So, you're a trusting person.
  • 00:23:45.030 --> 00:23:46.250
  • You've learned what it means to trust God in the midst
  • 00:23:46.260 --> 00:23:49.290
  • of the fog of the storm.
  • 00:23:50.000 --> 00:23:51.280
  • You're a doer, and you're a dreamer, and I'm proud you.
  • 00:23:51.290 --> 00:23:54.230
  • Let's pray.
  • 00:23:54.240 --> 00:23:57.030
  • Father, we thank you that you are here and that you hear
  • 00:23:57.040 --> 00:23:59.250
  • our prayers and that you are a limitless God.
  • 00:23:59.260 --> 00:24:03.220
  • We thank you for heaven. We thank you for healing.
  • 00:24:03.230 --> 00:24:07.200
  • We thank you for Jesus Christ.
  • 00:24:07.210 --> 00:24:09.260
  • We thank you that he shows us what kind of a God you are.
  • 00:24:09.270 --> 00:24:12.230
  • We trust you. You heal people.
  • 00:24:12.240 --> 00:24:15.050
  • You raise people from the dead.
  • 00:24:15.060 --> 00:24:17.140
  • You are building your kingdom on earth right now
  • 00:24:17.150 --> 00:24:19.120
  • and we're so honored to be a part of it.
  • 00:24:19.130 --> 00:24:21.100
  • We love you. In Jesus' name we pray, amen.
  • 00:24:21.110 --> 00:24:26.060
  • announcer: When you give to our ministry, we want to say
  • 00:24:26.070 --> 00:24:28.140
  • a small thank you so when you give a gift of $40 or more,
  • 00:24:28.150 --> 00:24:32.140
  • we will send you a Creed of the Beloved tumbler.
  • 00:24:32.150 --> 00:24:35.170
  • Let it be a reminder that God is your provider.
  • 00:24:35.180 --> 00:24:39.100
  • Bobby Schuller: Every single week, we get literally thousands
  • 00:24:39.110 --> 00:24:41.270
  • of letters from people all around the world who tell us
  • 00:24:41.280 --> 00:24:45.080
  • that their lives were radically transformed.
  • 00:24:45.090 --> 00:24:47.090
  • Every single letter we get, we open and we read it.
  • 00:24:47.100 --> 00:24:50.140
  • Every prayer request we get, we pray for those people.
  • 00:24:50.150 --> 00:24:53.110
  • And every time we do it, our team is so encouraged
  • 00:24:53.120 --> 00:24:57.070
  • and we're encouraged because lives are being changed.
  • 00:24:57.080 --> 00:24:59.240
  • We want you to know that that's not our doing,
  • 00:24:59.250 --> 00:25:01.230
  • that's your doing.
  • 00:25:01.240 --> 00:25:03.110
  • When you give to this ministry, you are making such
  • 00:25:03.120 --> 00:25:06.230
  • a big impact on people's lives.
  • 00:25:06.240 --> 00:25:09.060
  • This is crazy, like, every week we have to raise lots
  • 00:25:09.070 --> 00:25:11.180
  • and lots of money to pay for airtime.
  • 00:25:11.190 --> 00:25:13.130
  • If one month goes by that we don't get money,
  • 00:25:13.140 --> 00:25:15.080
  • we go off the air.
  • 00:25:15.090 --> 00:25:16.180
  • And we are so, so thankful for your generosity.
  • 00:25:16.190 --> 00:25:19.290
  • Here's one story that was touched
  • 00:25:20.000 --> 00:25:21.260
  • because of your generosity.
  • 00:25:21.270 --> 00:25:23.260
  • Casy: Dear Bobby, I am an inmate at a correctional
  • 00:25:23.270 --> 00:25:26.040
  • facility here in Tennessee.
  • 00:25:26.050 --> 00:25:29.020
  • I have been incarcerated since February 1998
  • 00:25:29.030 --> 00:25:32.220
  • but only recently discovered "Hour of Power."
  • 00:25:32.230 --> 00:25:35.290
  • I am a stronger, more seeking Christian because of the message
  • 00:25:36.000 --> 00:25:40.080
  • Jesus gives through you and even I, a sinner who's locked away
  • 00:25:40.090 --> 00:25:45.050
  • for a crime, still feel the love and forgiveness of Christ.
  • 00:25:45.060 --> 00:25:50.160
  • You have helped me realize that though many may
  • 00:25:50.170 --> 00:25:53.050
  • look down upon me, God controls everything.
  • 00:25:53.060 --> 00:25:56.240
  • I am forgiven, loved and want to be a part of life again.
  • 00:25:56.250 --> 00:26:02.100
  • I will be going home within the next few years.
  • 00:26:02.110 --> 00:26:04.110
  • It's scary to consider what that will be like,
  • 00:26:04.120 --> 00:26:07.230
  • but you have given me hope and faith.
  • 00:26:07.240 --> 00:26:09.280
  • I thank you and I send you this high five in praise
  • 00:26:09.290 --> 00:26:14.000
  • and gratitude for what Christ does through you.
  • 00:26:14.010 --> 00:26:17.200
  • Bobby: Casy, we want you to know you really
  • 00:26:17.210 --> 00:26:19.080
  • are a part of this church family.
  • 00:26:19.090 --> 00:26:21.060
  • High five right back at you.
  • 00:26:21.070 --> 00:26:23.020
  • Seriously, you are not what you do, you're not what you have,
  • 00:26:23.030 --> 00:26:25.140
  • you're not what people say about you.
  • 00:26:25.150 --> 00:26:26.240
  • We believe that for you.
  • 00:26:26.250 --> 00:26:28.190
  • We love you and we're rooting for you.
  • 00:26:28.200 --> 00:26:30.070
  • For everybody else that's watching on TV,
  • 00:26:30.080 --> 00:26:31.260
  • we just want you to know that this is one
  • 00:26:31.270 --> 00:26:33.180
  • of thousands of stories of people
  • 00:26:33.190 --> 00:26:35.160
  • who are touched because of your giving.
  • 00:26:35.170 --> 00:26:37.150
  • So, thank you and please continue to support this
  • 00:26:37.160 --> 00:26:39.260
  • ministry as we reach people all around the world.
  • 00:26:39.270 --> 00:26:43.040
