  • [congregation applauding]
  • 00:00:04.290 --> 00:00:11.170
  • Bobby Schuller: Thank you for joining us today
  • 00:00:11.180 --> 00:00:11.190
  • here at Shepherd's Grove.
  • 00:00:13.020 --> 00:00:14.150
  • We love you, and we want you to know we're there
  • 00:00:14.160 --> 00:00:16.060
  • for you all the way.
  • 00:00:16.070 --> 00:00:17.170
  • Whatever it is you're going through, we're with you.
  • 00:00:17.180 --> 00:00:19.130
  • And we say this creed together.
  • 00:00:19.140 --> 00:00:21.060
  • Would you hold your hands out like this.
  • 00:00:21.070 --> 00:00:22.230
  • It's a sign of receiving.
  • 00:00:22.240 --> 00:00:24.040
  • We're gonna say this together: "I'm not what I do.
  • 00:00:24.050 --> 00:00:28.020
  • I'm not what I have.
  • 00:00:28.030 --> 00:00:30.040
  • I'm not what people say about me.
  • 00:00:30.050 --> 00:00:33.000
  • I am the beloved of God. It's who I am.
  • 00:00:33.010 --> 00:00:37.100
  • No one can take it from me. I don't have to worry.
  • 00:00:37.110 --> 00:00:41.180
  • I don't have to hurry.
  • 00:00:41.190 --> 00:00:43.190
  • I can trust my friend Jesus and share his love with the world."
  • 00:00:43.200 --> 00:00:48.250
  • Thanks. You can be seated.
  • 00:00:48.260 --> 00:00:52.220
  • So you may notice I'm wearing a robe,
  • 00:00:52.230 --> 00:00:54.020
  • and I wanna just say a few things about that before
  • 00:00:54.030 --> 00:00:57.080
  • I begin my message this morning.
  • 00:00:57.090 --> 00:01:02.040
  • When I was ordained as a pastor, there were all of these men of
  • 00:01:02.050 --> 00:01:06.170
  • God I love, and they came around,
  • 00:01:06.180 --> 00:01:08.230
  • and my dad actually led the service.
  • 00:01:08.240 --> 00:01:10.230
  • And they laid hands on me and prayed for me,
  • 00:01:10.240 --> 00:01:13.030
  • and I wore this robe when that happened.
  • 00:01:13.040 --> 00:01:15.200
  • And the robe became, and always has been, a sign of the
  • 00:01:15.210 --> 00:01:19.130
  • idea that the person who is speaking has been affirmed by
  • 00:01:19.140 --> 00:01:23.090
  • his or her community, has been educated, and has been prepared
  • 00:01:23.100 --> 00:01:28.220
  • to do the task that God has at hand.
  • 00:01:28.230 --> 00:01:31.180
  • This type of robe was put together in its roots by the
  • 00:01:31.190 --> 00:01:34.280
  • reformed doctors who wanted a sort of depth--or I don't wanna
  • 00:01:34.290 --> 00:01:39.090
  • say "severity," but "sacredness" in the approach to serving the
  • 00:01:39.100 --> 00:01:43.010
  • Word of God and the sacraments.
  • 00:01:43.020 --> 00:01:45.220
  • So this robe has been worn by Dutch Reformed,
  • 00:01:45.230 --> 00:01:49.040
  • Presbyterian churches for centuries,
  • 00:01:49.050 --> 00:01:52.200
  • and with the contemporizing of the church,
  • 00:01:52.210 --> 00:01:55.240
  • many of the vestments and traditions that have us rooted
  • 00:01:55.250 --> 00:01:59.060
  • in a history have been abandoned in many parts because of the
  • 00:01:59.070 --> 00:02:03.230
  • fear of religiosity and posturing,
  • 00:02:03.240 --> 00:02:07.090
  • and some of those points really are valid.
  • 00:02:07.100 --> 00:02:10.090
  • And, yet, on the other hand, I still see plenty of religiosity
  • 00:02:10.100 --> 00:02:13.230
  • and posturing by cool pastors in jeans and T-shirts.
  • 00:02:13.240 --> 00:02:18.150
  • So posturing is much more to do with the heart
  • 00:02:18.160 --> 00:02:21.110
  • than it does with clothing.
  • 00:02:21.120 --> 00:02:24.180
  • One of the big reasons I'm wearing this robe is because I
  • 00:02:24.190 --> 00:02:27.120
  • wanna be rooted in something deeper than myself, in a way.
  • 00:02:27.130 --> 00:02:31.240
  • I am rooted in something deeper myself,
  • 00:02:31.250 --> 00:02:34.000
  • and we all are, and it's a reflection,
  • 00:02:34.010 --> 00:02:36.170
  • not of me as a person, but of the office that I didn't create,
  • 00:02:36.180 --> 00:02:41.040
  • an office I inherited, and it's a way for me, as Paul says, "To
  • 00:02:41.050 --> 00:02:44.270
  • lift or raise the office to which I've been called."
  • 00:02:44.280 --> 00:02:50.110
  • On a personal note, all the men of God in my life that I looked
  • 00:02:50.120 --> 00:02:53.070
  • up to, most of them wore this same vestment: Pastors,
  • 00:02:53.080 --> 00:02:57.180
  • my dad--a lot of people are like,
  • 00:02:57.190 --> 00:02:59.190
  • "What's it like growing up with the Crystal Cathedral?"
  • 00:02:59.200 --> 00:03:01.040
  • I didn't grow up with the Crystal Cathedral.
  • 00:03:01.050 --> 00:03:02.140
  • I grew up at Rancho Capistrano Community Church,
  • 00:03:02.150 --> 00:03:04.290
  • a Dutch Reformed Church on a hill on the sunny,
  • 00:03:05.000 --> 00:03:09.200
  • brown-green hills of San Juan Capistrano,
  • 00:03:09.210 --> 00:03:12.220
  • and we were there, and, you know,
  • 00:03:12.230 --> 00:03:14.250
  • every Sunday we had a choir, and my dad would come down,
  • 00:03:14.260 --> 00:03:17.150
  • wearing a robe like this, and he would preach the Word of God,
  • 00:03:17.160 --> 00:03:20.290
  • and he always did this thing with children where he would sit
  • 00:03:21.000 --> 00:03:23.280
  • down on the steps with kids and give them toys,
  • 00:03:23.290 --> 00:03:26.030
  • and they're such fond memories, and we'd go outside and have
  • 00:03:26.040 --> 00:03:29.160
  • chili cook-offs and stuff.
  • 00:03:29.170 --> 00:03:31.270
  • And when we came up to the Crystal Cathedral,
  • 00:03:31.280 --> 00:03:34.080
  • the men of God there like Tino Ballesteros and Juan Carlos and
  • 00:03:34.090 --> 00:03:39.020
  • my grandpa and Glenn and Jim, and so many other pastors,
  • 00:03:39.030 --> 00:03:43.180
  • men and women, wore the vestments as well as they would
  • 00:03:43.190 --> 00:03:46.270
  • preach and administer the Word and sacraments.
  • 00:03:46.280 --> 00:03:49.190
  • My parents were also divorced, and I went to church my whole
  • 00:03:49.200 --> 00:03:52.230
  • life, but when I was with my mom, we lived in L.A.,
  • 00:03:52.240 --> 00:03:55.160
  • and we went to Hollywood Presbyterian, and so I would
  • 00:03:55.170 --> 00:03:57.070
  • watch Lloyd Ogilvie preach in the exact same robe as well.
  • 00:03:57.080 --> 00:04:02.060
  • And later on, we attended different churches that also had
  • 00:04:02.070 --> 00:04:05.050
  • a huge impact on my life, mostly Charismatic-Pentecostal
  • 00:04:05.060 --> 00:04:07.140
  • churches, but it's weird because that's really my life.
  • 00:04:07.150 --> 00:04:10.250
  • I'm this odd combination of traditional Presbyterian-Dutch
  • 00:04:10.260 --> 00:04:13.270
  • Reformed, but also Pentecostal, and I'm
  • 00:04:13.280 --> 00:04:17.190
  • this weird mishmash of the two.
  • 00:04:17.200 --> 00:04:21.220
  • I think one of the main reasons I'm wearing this particular robe
  • 00:04:21.230 --> 00:04:24.160
  • is that this is my grandpa's robe.
  • 00:04:24.170 --> 00:04:28.030
  • It is the robe he wore.
  • 00:04:28.040 --> 00:04:30.280
  • My grandpa, you know, I'm very close to--my Grandma and
  • 00:04:30.290 --> 00:04:33.060
  • Grandpa-- are here today.
  • 00:04:33.070 --> 00:04:34.160
  • I'm very, very close with them, but I was also very close to my
  • 00:04:34.170 --> 00:04:37.100
  • Grandma and Grandpa Schuller, both of whom have passed.
  • 00:04:37.110 --> 00:04:40.290
  • And when I was a young college pastor with my Grandpa Schuller,
  • 00:04:41.000 --> 00:04:43.010
  • we would sit up in his office, and he mentored me for years.
  • 00:04:43.020 --> 00:04:47.150
  • Every Thursday I'd be up there for hours,
  • 00:04:47.160 --> 00:04:50.070
  • and he would pour into me, and he'd ask me questions and this
  • 00:04:50.080 --> 00:04:53.040
  • and that, and I really idolized him.
  • 00:04:53.050 --> 00:04:55.260
  • I really looked up to him. And I disagreed with him.
  • 00:04:55.270 --> 00:04:57.270
  • I loved challenging him and pushing back, and I
  • 00:04:57.280 --> 00:05:00.270
  • loved it when he didn't have an answer and would just smile.
  • 00:05:00.280 --> 00:05:02.250
  • He'd just go...
  • 00:05:02.260 --> 00:05:04.230
  • [congregation laughing]
  • 00:05:04.240 --> 00:05:09.290
  • And he died two years ago. He gave me this robe.
  • 00:05:10.000 --> 00:05:14.210
  • And he gave it to me because he wanted me to wear it.
  • 00:05:14.220 --> 00:05:24.220
  • Excuse me.
  • 00:05:25.190 --> 00:05:30.170
  • It seems, it seems wrong to let it sit in the closet.
  • 00:05:30.180 --> 00:05:37.070
  • Excuse me.
  • 00:05:42.000 --> 00:05:44.050
  • [congregation applauding]
  • 00:05:44.060 --> 00:05:53.190
  • So I'm gonna, I'm gonna keep wearing the robe.
  • 00:05:54.210 --> 00:05:59.110
  • And if it bugs you, if it bugs you,
  • 00:05:59.120 --> 00:06:05.260
  • just pretend I'm giving a graduation speech,
  • 00:06:05.270 --> 00:06:07.210
  • and then you'll just get over it, you know?
  • 00:06:07.220 --> 00:06:09.160
  • If it really bugs you, you can come to our modern service where
  • 00:06:09.170 --> 00:06:12.150
  • I'll be a little bit more casual.
  • 00:06:12.160 --> 00:06:14.130
  • So, anyway, well, good morning.
  • 00:06:14.140 --> 00:06:16.260
  • We're so glad you're here, and I'm so thankful that you're here
  • 00:06:16.270 --> 00:06:20.020
  • to worship with us.
  • 00:06:20.030 --> 00:06:21.150
  • And Shepherd's Grove is a church that really believes in people.
  • 00:06:21.160 --> 00:06:25.150
  • Whatever it is you're going through right now,
  • 00:06:25.160 --> 00:06:26.280
  • I really want you to know that the shame you feel,
  • 00:06:26.290 --> 00:06:30.240
  • because we all feel it, we call "shame" different things.
  • 00:06:30.250 --> 00:06:33.180
  • We call it "embarrassment." We call it "not good enough."
  • 00:06:33.190 --> 00:06:38.100
  • We call it "unworthy." We shroud it in pretending.
  • 00:06:38.110 --> 00:06:41.260
  • I want you to know that here you can be safe.
  • 00:06:41.270 --> 00:06:43.150
  • You can be exactly who you are.
  • 00:06:43.160 --> 00:06:44.260
  • You don't have to wear masks in this church.
  • 00:06:44.270 --> 00:06:47.030
  • You're loved just as you are and not for what you should be,
  • 00:06:47.040 --> 00:06:50.250
  • and not just by God, but by us.
  • 00:06:50.260 --> 00:06:52.220
  • We love you very, very much.
  • 00:06:52.230 --> 00:06:54.230
  • And we believe that this is the right kind of place,
  • 00:06:54.240 --> 00:06:57.010
  • and we believe the "Hour of Power" will always be a place
  • 00:06:57.020 --> 00:06:59.150
  • where people can receive encouragement every day and be
  • 00:06:59.160 --> 00:07:02.020
  • realigned with what God says and not what the world says because
  • 00:07:02.030 --> 00:07:04.120
  • the world can be really harsh.
  • 00:07:04.130 --> 00:07:06.140
  • And we receive from God the good news that we are called,
  • 00:07:06.150 --> 00:07:10.010
  • that we are beloved, that we're worthy, that we're talented.
  • 00:07:10.020 --> 00:07:13.090
  • The possibilities of life are limitless,
  • 00:07:13.100 --> 00:07:16.240
  • and that's a very good thing.
  • 00:07:16.250 --> 00:07:18.130
  • The world needs you.
  • 00:07:18.140 --> 00:07:23.020
  • Today we're beginning a series where we're gonna talk about
  • 00:07:23.030 --> 00:07:25.150
  • what Jesus said about life.
  • 00:07:25.160 --> 00:07:29.120
  • Every couple of years, I always--you know,
  • 00:07:29.130 --> 00:07:32.020
  • I love the Sermon on the Mount.
  • 00:07:32.030 --> 00:07:33.140
  • I studied it for years and years.
  • 00:07:33.150 --> 00:07:35.190
  • I've translated it from Greek to English.
  • 00:07:35.200 --> 00:07:38.110
  • I studied under Dallas Willard, who was also a big Sermon on the
  • 00:07:38.120 --> 00:07:42.070
  • Mount guy, and so I loved to preach it,
  • 00:07:42.080 --> 00:07:44.240
  • but I've done it to death in a way, you know?
  • 00:07:44.250 --> 00:07:46.280
  • So I'm gonna try and, in this series,
  • 00:07:46.290 --> 00:07:48.270
  • pull from the gospels a lot, but I'm gonna move off of Matthew a
  • 00:07:48.280 --> 00:07:52.070
  • bit, and we're gonna talk about how Jesus gives you the
  • 00:07:52.080 --> 00:07:56.260
  • opportunity to be totally alive, that when Jesus talks about
  • 00:07:56.270 --> 00:08:01.110
  • eternal life, he's not just talking about going to heaven
  • 00:08:01.120 --> 00:08:05.150
  • when you die, and he is talking about that,
  • 00:08:05.160 --> 00:08:07.030
  • but he's also talking about how to be totally alive today!
  • 00:08:07.040 --> 00:08:11.000
  • I want that. You want that too!
  • 00:08:11.010 --> 00:08:13.180
  • And he gives us a road map for that,
  • 00:08:13.190 --> 00:08:15.200
  • and so we're gonna spend the next few months,
  • 00:08:15.210 --> 00:08:18.070
  • actually, studying that on how to be alive.
  • 00:08:18.080 --> 00:08:21.240
  • Yeah, that's right.
  • 00:08:21.250 --> 00:08:23.110
  • It's "The Narrow Path: How To Be Alive."
  • 00:08:23.120 --> 00:08:28.080
  • Jesus begins in the Sermon on the Mount by affirming that
  • 00:08:28.090 --> 00:08:32.120
  • everyone in his audience is called,
  • 00:08:32.130 --> 00:08:35.270
  • loved, powerful, and valuable.
  • 00:08:35.280 --> 00:08:40.180
  • Now, this was remarkable in his day because the religious people
  • 00:08:40.190 --> 00:08:43.090
  • in Jesus' day, liked to say some people are out,
  • 00:08:43.100 --> 00:08:45.280
  • and some people are in, and the way that you get in is by doing
  • 00:08:45.290 --> 00:08:49.080
  • things the right way, and not being sick.
  • 00:08:49.090 --> 00:08:52.260
  • I hate to say that, but people like lepers and people with
  • 00:08:52.270 --> 00:08:58.220
  • bleeding diseases were believed to be cursed by God because of a
  • 00:08:58.230 --> 00:09:02.110
  • sin of their parents or something like that.
  • 00:09:02.120 --> 00:09:04.040
  • So there was this system in place where some people were in,
  • 00:09:04.050 --> 00:09:08.140
  • and some people were out.
  • 00:09:08.150 --> 00:09:10.210
  • Jesus comes on the scene in the gospel of Matthew in chapter 5,
  • 00:09:10.220 --> 00:09:15.080
  • and he begins with the Beatitudes,
  • 00:09:15.090 --> 00:09:18.150
  • in which he says that everyone belongs.
  • 00:09:18.160 --> 00:09:21.170
  • He begins by saying, "Blessed are the poor in spirit."
  • 00:09:21.180 --> 00:09:24.180
  • Being poor in spirit is not a virtue.
  • 00:09:24.190 --> 00:09:26.110
  • That's a misunderstanding of the passage.
  • 00:09:26.120 --> 00:09:28.030
  • "Poor in spirit" means you're spiritually bankrupt.
  • 00:09:28.040 --> 00:09:31.100
  • "Blessed are you if you mourn.
  • 00:09:31.110 --> 00:09:33.100
  • Blessed are you if you've been a doormat you're whole life."
  • 00:09:33.110 --> 00:09:35.280
  • In Luke, he says, "Blessed are you if you're poor,
  • 00:09:35.290 --> 00:09:38.100
  • if you're persecuted, if you're unwanted, if you're uninvited."
  • 00:09:38.110 --> 00:09:42.270
  • Jesus says to these people, "You are called.
  • 00:09:42.280 --> 00:09:48.010
  • You are loved. You are light.
  • 00:09:48.020 --> 00:09:51.250
  • You are salt."
  • 00:09:51.260 --> 00:09:54.210
  • Now, I wanna hang on there just for a minute.
  • 00:09:54.220 --> 00:09:56.180
  • Many of us, we think that God always
  • 00:09:56.190 --> 00:09:59.270
  • calls the brightest and the best.
  • 00:09:59.280 --> 00:10:01.250
  • In 1 Samuel, the people of Israel don't have a king.
  • 00:10:01.260 --> 00:10:07.200
  • They have judges and they have--but they always say,
  • 00:10:07.210 --> 00:10:10.050
  • "God is our King."
  • 00:10:10.060 --> 00:10:11.160
  • And in the story, the Jewish people decide one day that they
  • 00:10:11.170 --> 00:10:13.120
  • want a king, and they picked this guy, Saul.
  • 00:10:13.130 --> 00:10:16.140
  • Saul is regal. He's tall.
  • 00:10:16.150 --> 00:10:18.100
  • He's handsome. He's kingly.
  • 00:10:18.110 --> 00:10:20.090
  • He looks, acts, and sounds just like a king.
  • 00:10:20.100 --> 00:10:23.060
  • They make him king, and he becomes a tyrant.
  • 00:10:23.070 --> 00:10:25.270
  • He becomes an evil guy.
  • 00:10:25.280 --> 00:10:27.240
  • He treats people poorly, and he's a terrible king.
  • 00:10:27.250 --> 00:10:31.110
  • And then God tells Samuel, I'm gonna call a new king.
  • 00:10:31.120 --> 00:10:34.100
  • So he says, "Samuel, go to Bethlehem,
  • 00:10:34.110 --> 00:10:36.270
  • incidentally, where the family of Jesse's are."
  • 00:10:36.280 --> 00:10:40.100
  • You know, Jesse's household is there.
  • 00:10:40.110 --> 00:10:42.240
  • "So go to Jesse's house."
  • 00:10:42.250 --> 00:10:45.000
  • And when he arrives, Samuel the prophet,
  • 00:10:45.010 --> 00:10:47.060
  • everyone in Bethlehem is scared because,
  • 00:10:47.070 --> 00:10:48.250
  • back then, prophets weren't always bringing good news.
  • 00:10:48.260 --> 00:10:52.050
  • And they said, "Are you here to condemn us?"
  • 00:10:52.060 --> 00:10:54.130
  • And he said, "No.
  • 00:10:54.140 --> 00:10:55.240
  • We're gonna make a sacrifice together," which essentially
  • 00:10:55.250 --> 00:10:57.270
  • means, "We're gonna have a party.
  • 00:10:57.280 --> 00:10:59.080
  • We're gonna have a party and make a sacrifice to God."
  • 00:10:59.090 --> 00:11:01.250
  • Now, the Bible doesn't say this, but I always believed that
  • 00:11:01.260 --> 00:11:04.010
  • Samuel did this party-sacrifice thing as a bit of a veil,
  • 00:11:04.020 --> 00:11:08.100
  • a guise, to snoop around Jesse's family and see who the king was.
  • 00:11:08.110 --> 00:11:13.060
  • Samuel was led by the Holy Spirit and was supposed to
  • 00:11:13.070 --> 00:11:15.200
  • discern by listening and feeling from the Holy Spirit who this
  • 00:11:15.210 --> 00:11:20.150
  • next king was, you know?
  • 00:11:20.160 --> 00:11:23.180
  • So Jesse comes, and he brings his son,
  • 00:11:23.190 --> 00:11:26.030
  • and he sees the eldest son Eliab.
  • 00:11:26.040 --> 00:11:29.160
  • And he looks at a Eliab, and the Bible says he looks and says,
  • 00:11:29.170 --> 00:11:32.260
  • "Surely this is God's anointed!" Because Eliab was tall.
  • 00:11:32.270 --> 00:11:37.240
  • He was handsome. He was the eldest.
  • 00:11:37.250 --> 00:11:40.140
  • He had all the things that made him look kingly.
  • 00:11:40.150 --> 00:11:44.140
  • And the Bible says this.
  • 00:11:44.150 --> 00:11:45.260
  • God said to Samuel, "Do not consider his appearance or his
  • 00:11:45.270 --> 00:11:51.120
  • height, for I have rejected him.
  • 00:11:51.130 --> 00:11:55.050
  • The Lord does not look at the things people look at.
  • 00:11:55.060 --> 00:11:59.010
  • People look at the outward appearance,
  • 00:11:59.020 --> 00:12:02.000
  • but the Lord looks at the heart."
  • 00:12:02.010 --> 00:12:06.020
  • The Lord looks at the heart. The Lord looks at the heart.
  • 00:12:06.030 --> 00:12:11.250
  • And so, one at a time, all of these sons were brought before
  • 00:12:11.260 --> 00:12:15.180
  • Samuel, and he keeps thinking, "This is the one," and God says,
  • 00:12:15.190 --> 00:12:18.040
  • "No, that's not him. That's not him.
  • 00:12:18.050 --> 00:12:19.190
  • That's not him."
  • 00:12:19.200 --> 00:12:21.090
  • And, finally, he thinks he's gone through all the sons,
  • 00:12:21.100 --> 00:12:22.230
  • and Samuel says to Jesse, the dad, "Is this it?
  • 00:12:22.240 --> 00:12:26.060
  • Are these all your sons?"
  • 00:12:26.070 --> 00:12:28.230
  • And it always breaks my heart, Jesse's response.
  • 00:12:28.240 --> 00:12:31.050
  • He says, "Oh," and kind of scratches his head, and he
  • 00:12:31.060 --> 00:12:34.080
  • goes, "Well, there's--I mean, I guess there's David."
  • 00:12:34.090 --> 00:12:39.000
  • Man, just hold on to that for a second.
  • 00:12:39.010 --> 00:12:42.010
  • A big honor, big celebration, a big party in a little town.
  • 00:12:42.020 --> 00:12:46.090
  • Have you ever lived in a little town?
  • 00:12:46.100 --> 00:12:47.210
  • A big party's a big deal.
  • 00:12:47.220 --> 00:12:49.100
  • The fair comes to town or something like that,
  • 00:12:49.110 --> 00:12:50.200
  • everyone wants to go.
  • 00:12:50.210 --> 00:12:52.210
  • David was obviously told, "Stay back.
  • 00:12:52.220 --> 00:12:56.020
  • Take care of the sheep.
  • 00:12:56.030 --> 00:12:57.190
  • All of your brothers and I are going to the sacrifice.
  • 00:12:57.200 --> 00:13:01.020
  • You get to stay." He's uninvited.
  • 00:13:01.030 --> 00:13:04.110
  • Obviously, his, you know, brothers and dad don't see a
  • 00:13:04.120 --> 00:13:06.280
  • whole lot in him, and Samuel says,
  • 00:13:06.290 --> 00:13:10.200
  • "We will not sit down until he is here."
  • 00:13:10.210 --> 00:13:14.140
  • And when David comes, he's the chosen one because of his heart.
  • 00:13:14.150 --> 00:13:20.010
  • And, by the way, the heart is not all about emotions.
  • 00:13:20.020 --> 00:13:23.030
  • In the Bible, the heart is about will.
  • 00:13:23.040 --> 00:13:25.130
  • It's about what you choose to do.
  • 00:13:25.140 --> 00:13:26.240
  • It's about courage!
  • 00:13:26.250 --> 00:13:29.030
  • It's about being the one that, in spite of not being the
  • 00:13:29.040 --> 00:13:31.120
  • tallest, the best looking, the most regal,
  • 00:13:31.130 --> 00:13:33.240
  • you say, "Yes, Lord, I say, 'Yes.'
  • 00:13:33.250 --> 00:13:36.080
  • I will do what you call me to do."
  • 00:13:36.090 --> 00:13:38.070
  • It's about the heart! And David is anointed.
  • 00:13:38.080 --> 00:13:45.290
  • And it says, when he was anointed,
  • 00:13:46.000 --> 00:13:47.120
  • "The Spirit of the Lord came upon him and remained with him."
  • 00:13:47.130 --> 00:13:53.100
  • David was not a perfect guy.
  • 00:13:53.110 --> 00:13:54.250
  • David made lots of mistakes, was even,
  • 00:13:54.260 --> 00:13:56.080
  • in a way, a murderer.
  • 00:13:56.090 --> 00:13:58.280
  • And in spite of that, God continued to use him to do a
  • 00:13:58.290 --> 00:14:01.160
  • lot of good in the world.
  • 00:14:01.170 --> 00:14:03.240
  • Don't have time to get into that story and explain why,
  • 00:14:03.250 --> 00:14:05.220
  • but it's important to know that in our lives,
  • 00:14:05.230 --> 00:14:12.110
  • we think of all sorts of reasons why God can't use us.
  • 00:14:12.120 --> 00:14:16.270
  • We think of all of our flaws and sins and mistakes,
  • 00:14:16.280 --> 00:14:18.270
  • and we explain to God over and over,
  • 00:14:18.280 --> 00:14:20.200
  • "God, you don't understand.
  • 00:14:20.210 --> 00:14:22.060
  • I can't do that. Don't you know who I am?"
  • 00:14:22.070 --> 00:14:25.290
  • And you know what God says to you?
  • 00:14:26.000 --> 00:14:27.110
  • He says, "I know exactly who you are.
  • 00:14:27.120 --> 00:14:29.070
  • You're my beloved child. You have everything it takes.
  • 00:14:29.080 --> 00:14:32.270
  • You have everything you need.
  • 00:14:32.280 --> 00:14:34.090
  • You're salt and you're light, and the world needs you."
  • 00:14:34.100 --> 00:14:37.230
  • And I guess that's what I want to get across to you today.
  • 00:14:37.240 --> 00:14:40.190
  • Very often in church we talk about how God loves us and God
  • 00:14:40.200 --> 00:14:43.180
  • wants us and God--but sometimes that can feel like,
  • 00:14:43.190 --> 00:14:46.020
  • well, God wants us, but the world wants nothin' to do with
  • 00:14:46.030 --> 00:14:48.210
  • us, or the world can, you know, doesn't need us.
  • 00:14:48.220 --> 00:14:52.010
  • But Jesus says to these people--okay, so go back scene.
  • 00:14:52.020 --> 00:14:55.280
  • Here's Jesus on a hill, and there's thousands of people,
  • 00:14:55.290 --> 00:15:00.150
  • and most of them are riffraff and vagabonds and ragamuffins
  • 00:15:00.160 --> 00:15:05.020
  • and all sorts of old terms that--
  • 00:15:05.030 --> 00:15:08.150
  • And he says to these outcasts who are not religious,
  • 00:15:08.160 --> 00:15:12.000
  • who are probably there to get a miracle or see something cool
  • 00:15:12.010 --> 00:15:15.050
  • happen, and he just says to them,
  • 00:15:15.060 --> 00:15:16.170
  • "You are light, and you are salt."
  • 00:15:16.180 --> 00:15:19.110
  • Something I really wanna point out here.
  • 00:15:19.120 --> 00:15:22.050
  • Notice how Jesus doesn't say to them,
  • 00:15:22.060 --> 00:15:24.250
  • "If you believe in me, you'll become the light of the world."
  • 00:15:24.260 --> 00:15:28.290
  • I mean, it's true, we gotta believe in Jesus,
  • 00:15:29.000 --> 00:15:30.130
  • but he doesn't say that, and he doesn't say,
  • 00:15:30.140 --> 00:15:33.000
  • "Work hard and become the light and the salt of the earth."
  • 00:15:33.010 --> 00:15:36.140
  • Or he doesn't say, "If you read the Bible or if you do
  • 00:15:36.150 --> 00:15:39.060
  • everything I tell you to do, then you'll be salt and light."
  • 00:15:39.070 --> 00:15:41.140
  • What does he do?
  • 00:15:41.150 --> 00:15:42.260
  • He just says, "You are salt. You are light."
  • 00:15:42.270 --> 00:15:47.090
  • And so I wanna say to you that God is declaring that over you,
  • 00:15:47.100 --> 00:15:51.290
  • not that it's going to be so, but he needs you to know what's
  • 00:15:52.000 --> 00:15:55.130
  • already there, that you're already salt,
  • 00:15:55.140 --> 00:15:57.280
  • you're already light, you already have it in you.
  • 00:15:57.290 --> 00:15:59.280
  • Just release it. Let it go.
  • 00:15:59.290 --> 00:16:01.130
  • Open it up. Give it to the world.
  • 00:16:01.140 --> 00:16:04.060
  • The world needs your salt and your light.
  • 00:16:04.070 --> 00:16:07.020
  • The most important thing to note,
  • 00:16:07.030 --> 00:16:08.150
  • instead, Christ is affirming in you how valuable you are.
  • 00:16:08.160 --> 00:16:13.090
  • You're extremely valuable, and in the same way,
  • 00:16:13.100 --> 00:16:16.160
  • a town needs salt to exist and to eat.
  • 00:16:16.170 --> 00:16:20.120
  • The world needs you. You're so valuable.
  • 00:16:20.130 --> 00:16:25.220
  • He says, "You are the salt of the earth, but if the salt
  • 00:16:25.230 --> 00:16:28.000
  • loses its saltiness, it's no longer good for anything
  • 00:16:28.010 --> 00:16:31.090
  • except to be thrown out and trampled by men."
  • 00:16:31.100 --> 00:16:34.050
  • You have to ask yourself, "Have I lost my saltiness?"
  • 00:16:34.060 --> 00:16:37.230
  • Sounds like a pirate, doesn't it?
  • 00:16:37.240 --> 00:16:39.060
  • "Yarr, salty pirate." Have I lost my saltiness?
  • 00:16:39.070 --> 00:16:42.240
  • I am salt, but am I being salty?
  • 00:16:42.250 --> 00:16:45.140
  • Am I releasing all the flavor and the enthusiasm and the value
  • 00:16:45.150 --> 00:16:52.050
  • that makes me who I am?
  • 00:16:52.060 --> 00:16:55.120
  • You are salt, so be salty. And he says, "You are light."
  • 00:16:55.130 --> 00:17:01.070
  • And the "light" is knowledge, but "light," also,
  • 00:17:01.080 --> 00:17:04.120
  • in the Bible, really is about being powerful.
  • 00:17:04.130 --> 00:17:08.000
  • You know the old axiom, "Knowledge is power," well,
  • 00:17:08.010 --> 00:17:10.200
  • that was certainly true for the philosophical Jews and Greeks.
  • 00:17:10.210 --> 00:17:13.250
  • They equated knowledge and power.
  • 00:17:13.260 --> 00:17:16.280
  • So being light is a combination of both being powerful and being
  • 00:17:16.290 --> 00:17:20.130
  • wise or being knowledgeable.
  • 00:17:20.140 --> 00:17:22.010
  • And he says you have knowledge.
  • 00:17:22.020 --> 00:17:23.240
  • You have treasures in you that are so valuable.
  • 00:17:23.250 --> 00:17:29.010
  • You're light. You're powerful, you're salt.
  • 00:17:29.020 --> 00:17:32.120
  • You have everything this world needs to be better.
  • 00:17:32.130 --> 00:17:36.210
  • You wanna leave it better because God's called
  • 00:17:36.220 --> 00:17:39.030
  • you to make it better.
  • 00:17:39.040 --> 00:17:40.150
  • And one of the greatest things about this passage in Matthew is
  • 00:17:40.160 --> 00:17:42.250
  • that the guy writing is a tax collector,
  • 00:17:42.260 --> 00:17:44.220
  • and tax collectors are at the very bottom of the rung.
  • 00:17:44.230 --> 00:17:48.100
  • They were thieves.
  • 00:17:48.110 --> 00:17:49.230
  • They had sided with the Roman Empire.
  • 00:17:49.240 --> 00:17:51.180
  • They were outsiders. Tons of shame.
  • 00:17:51.190 --> 00:17:54.250
  • And Matthew the tax collector is writing about the Sermon on the
  • 00:17:54.260 --> 00:17:57.120
  • Mount, and he's listening, going, "I'm not salt.
  • 00:17:57.130 --> 00:18:01.020
  • I'm not light."
  • 00:18:01.030 --> 00:18:03.150
  • And in the next chapter, Jesus walks up to Matthew,
  • 00:18:03.160 --> 00:18:06.010
  • and he says, "You, Matthew, come follow me."
  • 00:18:06.020 --> 00:18:10.220
  • And you can almost see him knock over his table.
  • 00:18:10.230 --> 00:18:12.220
  • He says, "Yes, Lord, I'll follow you anywhere you go."
  • 00:18:12.230 --> 00:18:14.280
  • What an honor. Maybe you're like Matthew.
  • 00:18:14.290 --> 00:18:17.150
  • Maybe you come here today, and you go, "I'm not salt.
  • 00:18:17.160 --> 00:18:19.030
  • I'm not light.
  • 00:18:19.040 --> 00:18:20.220
  • Bobby, you don't know what I've done."
  • 00:18:20.230 --> 00:18:22.180
  • Or "Bobby, you don't know how bad I've messed up."
  • 00:18:22.190 --> 00:18:24.190
  • Or "Bobby, I'm too old," or "I'm not educated enough," or "I'm
  • 00:18:24.200 --> 00:18:27.150
  • too young," or "I've tried over and over,
  • 00:18:27.160 --> 00:18:31.000
  • and I just keep failing."
  • 00:18:31.010 --> 00:18:33.070
  • Friend, I want you to know, God is affirming today in your life,
  • 00:18:33.080 --> 00:18:38.050
  • you're salt and you're light, and your best
  • 00:18:38.060 --> 00:18:40.000
  • days are yet to come.
  • 00:18:40.010 --> 00:18:41.130
  • Don't give up your hope. Don't throw away your tomorrow.
  • 00:18:41.140 --> 00:18:45.100
  • Good things are coming, amen? You are salt and light.
  • 00:18:45.110 --> 00:18:51.270
  • You are! You are salt and light.
  • 00:18:51.280 --> 00:18:55.050
  • Confess it. Proclaim it.
  • 00:18:55.060 --> 00:18:57.130
  • Believe it. Own it.
  • 00:18:57.140 --> 00:18:59.090
  • The world needs you.
  • 00:18:59.100 --> 00:19:02.050
  • What do you confess over yourself?
  • 00:19:02.060 --> 00:19:05.150
  • Catch yourself.
  • 00:19:05.160 --> 00:19:06.270
  • I mean, like, how often do we say, "I'm such an idiot.
  • 00:19:06.280 --> 00:19:11.230
  • Of course, I messed up. I'm totally stressed out.
  • 00:19:11.240 --> 00:19:15.070
  • I'm so worried."
  • 00:19:15.080 --> 00:19:17.050
  • You know, these types of things, it's good to be vulnerable,
  • 00:19:17.060 --> 00:19:20.110
  • and it's good to talk about our feelings, but I'm talking
  • 00:19:20.120 --> 00:19:22.030
  • about the ways in which we kind of compulsively say it.
  • 00:19:22.040 --> 00:19:24.170
  • We're not sitting down with a cup of tea,
  • 00:19:24.180 --> 00:19:26.120
  • opening up to a friend.
  • 00:19:26.130 --> 00:19:27.270
  • We're just blurting out negative stuff all the time,
  • 00:19:27.280 --> 00:19:32.060
  • negative confessions about ourselves and others.
  • 00:19:32.070 --> 00:19:35.050
  • Stop doing that. Confess your sins.
  • 00:19:35.060 --> 00:19:38.000
  • Confess your mistakes.
  • 00:19:38.010 --> 00:19:39.100
  • Be vulnerable, be open, but don't just always compulsively
  • 00:19:39.110 --> 00:19:42.010
  • say bad things about yourself.
  • 00:19:42.020 --> 00:19:45.050
  • In fact, I would love for you to take a risk,
  • 00:19:45.060 --> 00:19:46.260
  • and one of these days, when you're feeling stressed,
  • 00:19:46.270 --> 00:19:49.100
  • just say somethin' like, "I'm feeling pumped!"
  • 00:19:49.110 --> 00:19:51.160
  • or I don't know what you'd say!
  • 00:19:51.170 --> 00:19:54.030
  • "I'm feeling relaxed," or "I'm the salt and the light.
  • 00:19:54.040 --> 00:19:57.050
  • I'm the salt of the earth. I'm the light of the world."
  • 00:19:57.060 --> 00:20:00.030
  • It feels weird even saying it, doesn't it?
  • 00:20:00.040 --> 00:20:01.210
  • But that's what God says over you.
  • 00:20:01.220 --> 00:20:03.120
  • Confess it.
  • 00:20:03.130 --> 00:20:05.030
  • Not long ago, Hannah and I--maybe you're in
  • 00:20:05.040 --> 00:20:07.170
  • a valley in your life.
  • 00:20:07.180 --> 00:20:09.010
  • Hannah and I were in Switzerland and took this cool picture.
  • 00:20:09.020 --> 00:20:11.130
  • We'd always wanted to go here.
  • 00:20:11.140 --> 00:20:12.250
  • We saw it on Pinterest, so we found it,
  • 00:20:12.260 --> 00:20:14.160
  • this little house that is built on the side of a mountain.
  • 00:20:14.170 --> 00:20:17.230
  • And actually, the right side of that house is
  • 00:20:17.240 --> 00:20:19.230
  • actually a mountain wall.
  • 00:20:19.240 --> 00:20:21.220
  • So Hannah and I had to actually climb up there.
  • 00:20:21.230 --> 00:20:24.060
  • You see all the snow.
  • 00:20:24.070 --> 00:20:25.160
  • It was actually mid-June, I think, late-June.
  • 00:20:25.170 --> 00:20:28.100
  • And the next day, we almost got snowed it.
  • 00:20:28.110 --> 00:20:29.260
  • It's only open during the summer,
  • 00:20:29.270 --> 00:20:32.120
  • and it's very, very high in the Swiss Alps.
  • 00:20:32.130 --> 00:20:34.100
  • And what that is, is actually--it's kind of like a
  • 00:20:34.110 --> 00:20:37.040
  • glorified campground.
  • 00:20:37.050 --> 00:20:38.260
  • So they have these little houses all over the alps where
  • 00:20:38.270 --> 00:20:42.030
  • mountaineers and hikers can stay the night and get shelter from
  • 00:20:42.040 --> 00:20:44.280
  • the snow and won't, you know, die in it and something.
  • 00:20:44.290 --> 00:20:48.200
  • Amazing thing is they had a bunch of food and beer.
  • 00:20:48.210 --> 00:20:51.020
  • And I asked them, "Where did you get all this
  • 00:20:51.030 --> 00:20:52.130
  • beer and sausages and stuff?"
  • 00:20:52.140 --> 00:20:54.110
  • Helicopter comes and drops it in.
  • 00:20:54.120 --> 00:20:57.020
  • Anyway, I thought that was cool. I digress.
  • 00:20:57.030 --> 00:20:59.240
  • But this is up from a little village called Appenzell.
  • 00:20:59.250 --> 00:21:02.220
  • We were there doing ministry because of our Swiss office,
  • 00:21:02.230 --> 00:21:05.030
  • and so we decided to take a few days extra.
  • 00:21:05.040 --> 00:21:07.170
  • And it's a mountaineering town.
  • 00:21:07.180 --> 00:21:09.050
  • And one of the things I noticed is that there's two people in
  • 00:21:09.060 --> 00:21:11.170
  • the little mountaineering village: There's the villagers
  • 00:21:11.180 --> 00:21:15.100
  • who are just always there.
  • 00:21:15.110 --> 00:21:17.100
  • They're doing life.
  • 00:21:17.110 --> 00:21:18.210
  • They're never going up in the mountains.
  • 00:21:18.220 --> 00:21:20.060
  • And then there's the other person: There's the mountaineer
  • 00:21:20.070 --> 00:21:22.020
  • in the valley.
  • 00:21:22.030 --> 00:21:23.120
  • And the reason they're there is not to be bored and sit
  • 00:21:23.130 --> 00:21:26.230
  • around and do nothing.
  • 00:21:26.240 --> 00:21:28.040
  • They're there to prepare for the next climb.
  • 00:21:28.050 --> 00:21:30.150
  • In other words, there's two people in the valley: There's
  • 00:21:30.160 --> 00:21:34.100
  • some who are complacent or stuck or in the rut,
  • 00:21:34.110 --> 00:21:38.150
  • and then there's another type of person in the valley,
  • 00:21:38.160 --> 00:21:40.180
  • the mountaineer who's preparing, the mountaineer who's getting
  • 00:21:40.190 --> 00:21:43.090
  • the right tools, putting the plans together,
  • 00:21:43.100 --> 00:21:46.010
  • who's meeting the right people, maybe training or resting.
  • 00:21:46.020 --> 00:21:49.210
  • And where you are in your life, you may say,
  • 00:21:49.220 --> 00:21:51.090
  • "Bobby, I've been in this valley for a long time."
  • 00:21:51.100 --> 00:21:53.060
  • And I just wanna say to you, "You're in a time of
  • 00:21:53.070 --> 00:21:55.040
  • preparation."
  • 00:21:55.050 --> 00:21:57.000
  • You're not like the villagers who are gonna be stuck there.
  • 00:21:57.010 --> 00:21:59.040
  • You're the mountaineer that, even though you're not on a
  • 00:21:59.050 --> 00:22:00.250
  • mountain, you're getting the right tools,
  • 00:22:00.260 --> 00:22:03.150
  • you're meeting the right people, you're resting.
  • 00:22:03.160 --> 00:22:06.230
  • You're getting everything you need to get to the top,
  • 00:22:06.240 --> 00:22:11.220
  • and I wanna just say to you that God is gonna bring
  • 00:22:11.230 --> 00:22:13.060
  • you up to the mountain.
  • 00:22:13.070 --> 00:22:14.200
  • If you're on the top of the mountain right now, nobody
  • 00:22:14.210 --> 00:22:16.100
  • stays on top of the mountain, right, unless you're dead.
  • 00:22:16.110 --> 00:22:19.110
  • The only people that stay on top of the mountain are dead people.
  • 00:22:19.120 --> 00:22:22.000
  • So life is that ebb and flow.
  • 00:22:22.010 --> 00:22:23.290
  • There's the up-and-down-ness of mountains,
  • 00:22:24.000 --> 00:22:25.260
  • like the waves, that life is always a series of achievement
  • 00:22:25.270 --> 00:22:30.000
  • and then letting go of your achievement so that you can
  • 00:22:30.010 --> 00:22:32.230
  • achieve the next thing that God has for you,
  • 00:22:32.240 --> 00:22:35.180
  • and that's a really great thing.
  • 00:22:35.190 --> 00:22:37.280
  • So as we talk about how to be alive,
  • 00:22:37.290 --> 00:22:39.240
  • we have to know that we are salt.
  • 00:22:39.250 --> 00:22:43.260
  • You are salt.
  • 00:22:43.270 --> 00:22:45.160
  • You're light, and the world needs you,
  • 00:22:45.170 --> 00:22:48.070
  • and the world will truly miss out if you keep beating yourself
  • 00:22:48.080 --> 00:22:50.230
  • up, bullying yourself, shaming yourself,
  • 00:22:50.240 --> 00:22:54.030
  • comparing yourself to others, comparing yourself to your past,
  • 00:22:54.040 --> 00:22:57.110
  • confessing negative things about yourself.
  • 00:22:57.120 --> 00:22:59.120
  • It's time to change what you say,
  • 00:22:59.130 --> 00:23:01.080
  • to confess positive things, to have a bigger outlook on your
  • 00:23:01.090 --> 00:23:05.000
  • life, to not be overwhelmed by the picture,
  • 00:23:05.010 --> 00:23:08.120
  • but to just take small practical steps towards your destiny and
  • 00:23:08.130 --> 00:23:12.040
  • to trust in God with everything you do, amen?
  • 00:23:12.050 --> 00:23:16.190
  • Well, before we finish today, I always like to give everyone an
  • 00:23:16.200 --> 00:23:19.110
  • opportunity to connect with God.
  • 00:23:19.120 --> 00:23:22.030
  • And so I'm going to actually--today is a great day,
  • 00:23:22.040 --> 00:23:25.050
  • you know, to become a Christian!
  • 00:23:25.060 --> 00:23:27.060
  • What better day than today, right?
  • 00:23:27.070 --> 00:23:29.110
  • We're thinking about the whole year is ahead of us,
  • 00:23:29.120 --> 00:23:32.020
  • and maybe you're here today, and you think,
  • 00:23:32.030 --> 00:23:34.220
  • "You know, Christians are so religious,
  • 00:23:34.230 --> 00:23:38.100
  • and they're mean and they're judgmental."
  • 00:23:38.110 --> 00:23:40.100
  • Those people are bad Christians!
  • 00:23:40.110 --> 00:23:42.240
  • They're not the good kind, you know!
  • 00:23:42.250 --> 00:23:45.160
  • The world needs good Christians, like,
  • 00:23:45.170 --> 00:23:47.190
  • people that are not the bad kind, you know!
  • 00:23:47.200 --> 00:23:50.170
  • And they need someone like you, and today is a fantastic
  • 00:23:50.180 --> 00:23:53.200
  • day to become a Christian.
  • 00:23:53.210 --> 00:23:55.130
  • So with everybody looking around,
  • 00:23:55.140 --> 00:23:59.060
  • every head up, everybody just observing,
  • 00:23:59.070 --> 00:24:02.280
  • I wanna give you the opportunity today to become a believer.
  • 00:24:02.290 --> 00:24:05.100
  • You say, "Bobby, it's embarrassing.
  • 00:24:05.110 --> 00:24:08.150
  • I don't want us to be in front of all these people to do this."
  • 00:24:08.160 --> 00:24:11.200
  • Look, the cool thing about becoming a Christian is it
  • 00:24:11.210 --> 00:24:14.100
  • begins with an act of courage.
  • 00:24:14.110 --> 00:24:17.140
  • And how much more courageous than to stand in front of a
  • 00:24:17.150 --> 00:24:19.050
  • thousand people and come down and confess Jesus Christ.
  • 00:24:19.060 --> 00:24:23.170
  • Are you at peace with God today? Are you at peace with yourself?
  • 00:24:23.180 --> 00:24:30.040
  • If you need new life, I'm gonna ask you now,
  • 00:24:30.050 --> 00:24:32.260
  • right now, stand up and come down here,
  • 00:24:32.270 --> 00:24:35.220
  • and let me pray for you, just in front of everybody.
  • 00:24:35.230 --> 00:24:38.160
  • Who cares? You don't need to be cool.
  • 00:24:38.170 --> 00:24:41.180
  • Just stand up right where you are,
  • 00:24:41.190 --> 00:24:44.100
  • right in front of whoever it is, and come on down.
  • 00:24:44.110 --> 00:24:48.240
  • [congregation applauding]
  • 00:24:48.250 --> 00:24:55.070
  • Jesus says, "If you confess me before men,
  • 00:24:56.110 --> 00:24:58.280
  • I'll confess you before the Father, but if you deny
  • 00:24:58.290 --> 00:25:01.150
  • me before men, I'll deny you before the Father."
  • 00:25:01.160 --> 00:25:04.080
  • I'm not here to condemn you.
  • 00:25:04.090 --> 00:25:06.230
  • I'm here to love on you, to give you grace,
  • 00:25:06.240 --> 00:25:08.280
  • and to give you an opportunity that,
  • 00:25:08.290 --> 00:25:10.270
  • when the day comes, when you breathe your last,
  • 00:25:10.280 --> 00:25:13.060
  • that you know with confidence that you belong to Jesus Christ
  • 00:25:13.070 --> 00:25:16.070
  • and you know where you're going and to dedicate your life to
  • 00:25:16.080 --> 00:25:20.090
  • serving him and loving him.
  • 00:25:20.100 --> 00:25:23.060
  • The Bible says, "Today is the day of salvation."
  • 00:25:23.070 --> 00:25:26.130
  • So you want it? Come get it.
  • 00:25:26.140 --> 00:25:29.080
  • It's a free gift. Thank you, friends.
  • 00:25:29.090 --> 00:25:34.040
  • So we're gonna pray together, and would you hold your hands
  • 00:25:34.050 --> 00:25:38.140
  • out like this and repeat after me: "Jesus Christ,
  • 00:25:38.150 --> 00:25:40.230
  • Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.
  • 00:25:40.240 --> 00:25:46.280
  • I am now the righteousness of Christ.
  • 00:25:46.290 --> 00:25:51.090
  • I am loved. I am forgiven.
  • 00:25:51.100 --> 00:25:55.130
  • I belong. I am called.
  • 00:25:55.140 --> 00:25:59.020
  • And I am favored.
  • 00:25:59.030 --> 00:26:01.180
  • Write my name in the Lamb's book of life,
  • 00:26:01.190 --> 00:26:05.210
  • and teach me to be like Jesus.
  • 00:26:05.220 --> 00:26:09.220
  • Fill me with your Holy Spirit. In Jesus' name, amen."
  • 00:26:09.230 --> 00:26:16.290
  • Let's give 'em a hand! Thank you, guys!
