  • [congregation applauding]
  • 00:00:01.000 --> 00:00:08.210
  • 00:00:08.220 --> 00:00:12.210
  • [congregation applauding]
  • 00:03:57.280 --> 00:04:04.010
  • Bobby Schuller: Friends, will you stand with me?
  • 00:04:06.070 --> 00:04:07.180
  • We're gonna say this creed together.
  • 00:04:07.190 --> 00:04:11.030
  • Believe it in your heart. It's true.
  • 00:04:11.040 --> 00:04:12.270
  • Hold your hands out like this.
  • 00:04:12.280 --> 00:04:14.120
  • It's a way of receiving God's love.
  • 00:04:14.130 --> 00:04:17.010
  • "I'm not what I do. I'm not what I have.
  • 00:04:17.020 --> 00:04:21.110
  • I'm not what people say about me.
  • 00:04:21.120 --> 00:04:24.140
  • I am the beloved of God. It's who I am.
  • 00:04:24.150 --> 00:04:28.290
  • No one can take it from me. I don't have to worry.
  • 00:04:29.000 --> 00:04:33.200
  • I don't have to hurry.
  • 00:04:33.210 --> 00:04:35.240
  • I can trust my friend Jesus and share his love with the world."
  • 00:04:35.250 --> 00:04:41.150
  • Thanks. You can be seated.
  • 00:04:41.160 --> 00:04:45.040
  • Today, we're gonna talk about meaning and, specifically,
  • 00:04:45.050 --> 00:04:49.140
  • this void or this emptiness that all of us feel.
  • 00:04:49.150 --> 00:04:55.070
  • If you wake up some mornings with a pit in your stomach and
  • 00:04:55.080 --> 00:04:58.220
  • you don't know why, we're gonna talk about that today.
  • 00:04:58.230 --> 00:05:02.220
  • Part of the human condition
  • 00:05:02.230 --> 00:05:04.240
  • is that all of us are born restless.
  • 00:05:04.250 --> 00:05:10.030
  • All of us are born restless.
  • 00:05:10.040 --> 00:05:12.200
  • You've never seen a baby born that just comes out
  • 00:05:12.210 --> 00:05:15.240
  • and just, "Hello, doctor.
  • 00:05:15.250 --> 00:05:19.160
  • Mother, father, great to see you."
  • 00:05:19.170 --> 00:05:22.260
  • Babies come out screaming and clawing and shouting.
  • 00:05:22.270 --> 00:05:28.040
  • Babies are the rawest version of you and me.
  • 00:05:28.050 --> 00:05:33.000
  • We all come out screaming and that's what life is.
  • 00:05:33.010 --> 00:05:37.200
  • There's some part of life that every bit of us is hungry,
  • 00:05:37.210 --> 00:05:42.000
  • screaming, yelling, hollering, and a big part of becoming
  • 00:05:42.010 --> 00:05:46.030
  • an adult is sort of hiding that, right?
  • 00:05:46.040 --> 00:05:50.220
  • A big part of becoming an adult is sort of building some
  • 00:05:50.230 --> 00:05:53.210
  • boundaries around that thing that still exists in our hearts.
  • 00:05:53.220 --> 00:05:59.170
  • Today's promise is this, whatever your heart is looking
  • 00:05:59.180 --> 00:06:03.260
  • for is looking for God.
  • 00:06:03.270 --> 00:06:06.250
  • My promise is this, what your heart is looking for,
  • 00:06:06.260 --> 00:06:08.290
  • you're gonna find it.
  • 00:06:09.000 --> 00:06:11.010
  • You're gonna find it.
  • 00:06:11.020 --> 00:06:13.090
  • Don't give up your search for God's power, God's life,
  • 00:06:13.100 --> 00:06:18.160
  • and God's fullness.
  • 00:06:18.170 --> 00:06:20.070
  • Christ is coming.
  • 00:06:20.080 --> 00:06:22.250
  • Today, Hannah read from one of my favorite stories
  • 00:06:22.260 --> 00:06:25.280
  • is from Luke chapter 2 and it's the best Advent story.
  • 00:06:25.290 --> 00:06:29.250
  • It's the story about Simeon.
  • 00:06:29.260 --> 00:06:33.100
  • Simeon was an old man when this story happens but in this story,
  • 00:06:33.110 --> 00:06:37.210
  • Jesus has been born.
  • 00:06:37.220 --> 00:06:39.010
  • And according to Orthodox Jewish custom,
  • 00:06:39.020 --> 00:06:42.110
  • Jesus is circumcised on the eighth day.
  • 00:06:42.120 --> 00:06:45.020
  • And I know this sounds weird but after a Jewish woman gives
  • 00:06:45.030 --> 00:06:48.210
  • birth, she has to go through a period of--
  • 00:06:48.220 --> 00:06:51.040
  • I think they call it a cleansing or waiting.
  • 00:06:51.050 --> 00:06:53.140
  • It's 40 days and for 40 days
  • 00:06:53.150 --> 00:06:55.230
  • she's basically under house arrest.
  • 00:06:55.240 --> 00:06:57.140
  • She can't leave. She has to stay there.
  • 00:06:57.150 --> 00:07:00.050
  • And the Levitical law say it's for the cleansing, you know,
  • 00:07:00.060 --> 00:07:03.090
  • it's a cleansing of the woman and, et cetera.
  • 00:07:03.100 --> 00:07:05.260
  • I actually think this is God's way from protecting women from
  • 00:07:05.270 --> 00:07:08.180
  • infection because many women back then worked
  • 00:07:08.190 --> 00:07:11.150
  • with animals and other things.
  • 00:07:11.160 --> 00:07:12.250
  • They didn't have germ theory and by protecting the woman
  • 00:07:12.260 --> 00:07:15.170
  • and keeping her in the house, it protected her from many
  • 00:07:15.180 --> 00:07:18.170
  • of the germs that are in the world that they allowed
  • 00:07:18.180 --> 00:07:20.190
  • the woman to heal.
  • 00:07:20.200 --> 00:07:22.060
  • But Jesus then comes for this ritualistic thing where after
  • 00:07:22.070 --> 00:07:25.240
  • that 40 days, they come and they bring their baby to the temple.
  • 00:07:25.250 --> 00:07:29.060
  • And so, Mary and Joseph are bringing now a 40-day-old baby
  • 00:07:29.070 --> 00:07:32.270
  • Jesus to the temple for this consecrating event.
  • 00:07:32.280 --> 00:07:38.080
  • And in this event, normally the mother would make
  • 00:07:38.090 --> 00:07:41.030
  • a sacrifice of a lamb.
  • 00:07:41.040 --> 00:07:42.200
  • A lamb was very expensive back in those days.
  • 00:07:42.210 --> 00:07:44.240
  • And so, Mary and Joseph actually made the sacrifice of the doves,
  • 00:07:44.250 --> 00:07:49.200
  • the two doves.
  • 00:07:49.210 --> 00:07:51.060
  • And this was called the poor man's sacrifice
  • 00:07:51.070 --> 00:07:54.040
  • and it's actually a--reinforces that Jesus was actually born
  • 00:07:54.050 --> 00:07:59.030
  • into a very poor family.
  • 00:07:59.040 --> 00:08:01.090
  • They didn't have much.
  • 00:08:01.100 --> 00:08:02.190
  • They didn't have enough to do like the really nice offering.
  • 00:08:02.200 --> 00:08:05.030
  • They had to do the poor man's offering.
  • 00:08:05.040 --> 00:08:06.200
  • There's something really sweet about Jesus being born
  • 00:08:06.210 --> 00:08:09.190
  • in a manger and being born sort of into our poverty.
  • 00:08:09.200 --> 00:08:12.210
  • It's a simple that he's a King, but he's so human that he faces
  • 00:08:12.220 --> 00:08:15.250
  • all the challenges that poor people face.
  • 00:08:15.260 --> 00:08:18.090
  • And if you're poor, Christ knows what that's like.
  • 00:08:18.100 --> 00:08:23.000
  • And there was a man named Simeon who had been promised that in
  • 00:08:23.010 --> 00:08:25.200
  • his life, someday, he would see the coming of this Messiah.
  • 00:08:25.210 --> 00:08:30.030
  • The Messiah had been prophesied for 500 years, that someday
  • 00:08:30.040 --> 00:08:33.040
  • there would be this man that would come
  • 00:08:33.050 --> 00:08:35.040
  • and he would change and save everything.
  • 00:08:35.050 --> 00:08:37.220
  • And Simeon was promised by the Holy Spirit that someday
  • 00:08:37.230 --> 00:08:41.060
  • he would see the coming of the Lord's Messiah.
  • 00:08:41.070 --> 00:08:43.040
  • And I like to think that Simeon was told
  • 00:08:43.050 --> 00:08:45.220
  • when he was a young man.
  • 00:08:45.230 --> 00:08:47.020
  • The Scripture doesn't say that but I like to think when he was
  • 00:08:47.030 --> 00:08:49.240
  • young, early, he was told this by the Spirit and he had been
  • 00:08:49.250 --> 00:08:53.050
  • waiting his whole life for the coming of Christ.
  • 00:08:53.060 --> 00:08:56.010
  • And the Scriptures say that the Holy Spirit led him into the
  • 00:08:56.020 --> 00:08:59.090
  • temple to see the child and there he saw Jesus.
  • 00:08:59.100 --> 00:09:02.270
  • And he went up to the baby and he held it in his arms
  • 00:09:02.280 --> 00:09:07.090
  • and he said, "At last, Lord, as you have promised.
  • 00:09:07.100 --> 00:09:13.010
  • Send your servant now to go in peace.
  • 00:09:13.020 --> 00:09:16.180
  • For my eyes have seen the coming of your salvation,
  • 00:09:16.190 --> 00:09:21.060
  • a light to the Gentiles."
  • 00:09:21.070 --> 00:09:24.150
  • Simeon is a symbol, is the symbol of Advent.
  • 00:09:24.160 --> 00:09:28.280
  • When Simeon holds the baby Jesus, there is something in him
  • 00:09:28.290 --> 00:09:33.070
  • that says, "Everything I've been waiting for
  • 00:09:33.080 --> 00:09:36.170
  • in my life has happened."
  • 00:09:36.180 --> 00:09:39.160
  • Simeon doesn't die right there then on the spot
  • 00:09:39.170 --> 00:09:42.270
  • but as an old man, he basically says to God, "I've seen it.
  • 00:09:42.280 --> 00:09:47.040
  • I've seen the coming of the Messiah."
  • 00:09:47.050 --> 00:09:50.060
  • And he essentially says, "I can die now.
  • 00:09:50.070 --> 00:09:53.180
  • I can die."
  • 00:09:53.190 --> 00:09:56.070
  • A major part of walking as a Christian, as a believer,
  • 00:09:56.080 --> 00:10:02.050
  • is being able to say, whether you're young or old,
  • 00:10:02.060 --> 00:10:05.010
  • whether you're sick or healthy, "I can die now."
  • 00:10:05.020 --> 00:10:08.260
  • This is such an important part of what it means to walk
  • 00:10:08.270 --> 00:10:11.210
  • in Christ that no matter what in your life, you are prepared
  • 00:10:11.220 --> 00:10:15.010
  • that you are at peace with God.
  • 00:10:15.020 --> 00:10:17.190
  • And that happens when this void inside your heart
  • 00:10:17.200 --> 00:10:20.260
  • is filled with Christ.
  • 00:10:20.270 --> 00:10:23.280
  • All of us desire him.
  • 00:10:23.290 --> 00:10:25.080
  • All of us want to reach out for him.
  • 00:10:25.090 --> 00:10:26.180
  • And all of us want to, whether young or old,
  • 00:10:26.190 --> 00:10:29.010
  • have this kind of Simeon experience.
  • 00:10:29.020 --> 00:10:31.130
  • Not that I want to die, but that if I died today,
  • 00:10:31.140 --> 00:10:34.150
  • I experienced everything that it was meant to live,
  • 00:10:34.160 --> 00:10:38.270
  • that I 100% know full life completely right now
  • 00:10:38.280 --> 00:10:43.070
  • because I touched Jesus Christ.
  • 00:10:43.080 --> 00:10:46.080
  • There is in every human heart, a vacuum, a hole.
  • 00:10:46.090 --> 00:10:52.280
  • This is Blaise Pascal that said this.
  • 00:10:52.290 --> 00:10:54.270
  • We might today say there's this sucking sound coming from
  • 00:10:54.280 --> 00:10:57.260
  • your heart that for all of us, we are born literally with
  • 00:10:57.270 --> 00:11:01.210
  • a vacuum right here.
  • 00:11:01.220 --> 00:11:04.100
  • You can take literally anything, even religion,
  • 00:11:04.110 --> 00:11:07.030
  • and try and fill that hole and it won't work.
  • 00:11:07.040 --> 00:11:10.200
  • Only God, a personal relationship with God,
  • 00:11:10.210 --> 00:11:13.100
  • can fill that void.
  • 00:11:13.110 --> 00:11:15.000
  • Only true intimacy with the Lord can fill,
  • 00:11:15.010 --> 00:11:18.130
  • can satiate that thirst.
  • 00:11:18.140 --> 00:11:22.050
  • This is why Saint Augustine wrote in this famous words
  • 00:11:22.060 --> 00:11:25.000
  • in the confessions, "Our hearts are restless
  • 00:11:25.010 --> 00:11:29.140
  • till they rest in Him."
  • 00:11:29.150 --> 00:11:32.210
  • There's an answer to all of us who are hungering and thirsting.
  • 00:11:32.220 --> 00:11:36.090
  • The answer is Jesus Christ.
  • 00:11:36.100 --> 00:11:38.280
  • Only he can fill the deepest void.
  • 00:11:38.290 --> 00:11:42.170
  • And so, I wanna promise you something,
  • 00:11:42.180 --> 00:11:44.220
  • it's a promise that Jesus made himself.
  • 00:11:44.230 --> 00:11:47.100
  • Ask and you'll receive.
  • 00:11:47.110 --> 00:11:49.120
  • Seek and you'll find.
  • 00:11:49.130 --> 00:11:51.170
  • Knock and the door will be opened.
  • 00:11:51.180 --> 00:11:53.280
  • If you seek after the Lord, you'll find him.
  • 00:11:53.290 --> 00:11:57.060
  • You'll find him and you'll find more than you
  • 00:11:57.070 --> 00:11:59.210
  • ever thought you would find.
  • 00:11:59.220 --> 00:12:01.080
  • You'll find eternal life and living water,
  • 00:12:01.090 --> 00:12:05.270
  • something you never expected.
  • 00:12:05.280 --> 00:12:08.150
  • You know, all of us have these props
  • 00:12:08.160 --> 00:12:10.090
  • that we utilize to fill that void.
  • 00:12:10.100 --> 00:12:12.080
  • You know, for some of us, it can be, you know having fun.
  • 00:12:12.090 --> 00:12:14.200
  • It's video games. It's drinking.
  • 00:12:14.210 --> 00:12:16.130
  • It's going out with friends. It's whatever.
  • 00:12:16.140 --> 00:12:18.190
  • We have these things, you know, people do these things
  • 00:12:18.200 --> 00:12:21.000
  • to fill this void, to stay busy, to constantly
  • 00:12:21.010 --> 00:12:23.210
  • go, go, go, do, do, do.
  • 00:12:23.220 --> 00:12:25.030
  • Maybe it's your work. Maybe it's your errands.
  • 00:12:25.040 --> 00:12:27.040
  • What would happen if you were stripped of all of those things?
  • 00:12:27.050 --> 00:12:32.000
  • What would happen if you couldn't--if you didn't have
  • 00:12:32.010 --> 00:12:34.250
  • your cell phone, and if you didn't have any errands,
  • 00:12:34.260 --> 00:12:37.230
  • and if you didn't have anyone knocking at the door,
  • 00:12:37.240 --> 00:12:39.180
  • and if you didn't have a job?
  • 00:12:39.190 --> 00:12:41.220
  • What would happen to your life if God, for only a moment,
  • 00:12:41.230 --> 00:12:45.170
  • stripped you of all of those things?
  • 00:12:45.180 --> 00:12:47.260
  • Who would you be?
  • 00:12:47.270 --> 00:12:50.030
  • For many of us, this feels and sounds like a nightmare.
  • 00:12:50.040 --> 00:12:53.290
  • "I can't imagine what it'd be like to be without my piano,"
  • 00:12:54.000 --> 00:12:56.180
  • or whatever it is, the thing that you do all the time.
  • 00:12:56.190 --> 00:12:59.250
  • And the truth is if you were stripped of the things that you
  • 00:12:59.260 --> 00:13:03.190
  • love to do every day to keep you busy, you would actually
  • 00:13:03.200 --> 00:13:07.280
  • find--maybe, especially if you go to church here, that you're
  • 00:13:07.290 --> 00:13:11.120
  • loved by God and you find that you don't need those things.
  • 00:13:11.130 --> 00:13:15.210
  • And you would mostly find that even when you thought
  • 00:13:15.220 --> 00:13:18.260
  • you were alone, you weren't.
  • 00:13:18.270 --> 00:13:20.270
  • You'll actually find that God was with you the whole time.
  • 00:13:20.280 --> 00:13:25.220
  • This is why solitude is so important
  • 00:13:25.230 --> 00:13:29.040
  • as a discipline for Christians.
  • 00:13:29.050 --> 00:13:31.020
  • There's a famous story that guys like me preaching on solitude
  • 00:13:31.030 --> 00:13:35.010
  • love to talk about with Elijah.
  • 00:13:35.020 --> 00:13:37.090
  • Elijah was in the mountains and he was searching for God and it
  • 00:13:37.100 --> 00:13:39.150
  • said, "This great wind came and it split the mountain
  • 00:13:39.160 --> 00:13:41.290
  • and rocks fell, but God was not in the wind."
  • 00:13:42.000 --> 00:13:44.260
  • And then it says, "A fire came and,
  • 00:13:44.270 --> 00:13:48.160
  • but God was not in the fire.
  • 00:13:48.170 --> 00:13:49.260
  • An earthquake came, but God was not in an earthquake."
  • 00:13:49.270 --> 00:13:52.140
  • And then a gentle whisper came and it said,
  • 00:13:52.150 --> 00:13:55.130
  • "Elijah, why are you here?"
  • 00:13:55.140 --> 00:13:58.130
  • You see, this is so important because those symbols,
  • 00:13:58.140 --> 00:14:02.110
  • the earthquake, the fire, the lightning,
  • 00:14:02.120 --> 00:14:04.170
  • that's how we think God is gonna speak to us,
  • 00:14:04.180 --> 00:14:07.000
  • but God speaks to us in the silence.
  • 00:14:07.010 --> 00:14:09.010
  • He speaks to us in the rest. He speaks to us in solitude.
  • 00:14:09.020 --> 00:14:12.100
  • It is so important that we have built into our lives rhythms
  • 00:14:12.110 --> 00:14:17.000
  • to just stop doing stuff, to just pause a moment and rest
  • 00:14:17.010 --> 00:14:22.150
  • and not send cards, and check emails, and call people.
  • 00:14:22.160 --> 00:14:26.210
  • Just relax and rest and not even feel like you have to pray
  • 00:14:26.220 --> 00:14:31.220
  • or read your Bible, to just stop and create space
  • 00:14:31.230 --> 00:14:35.240
  • for God to speak to you.
  • 00:14:35.250 --> 00:14:38.000
  • Solitude is a detox and you need it.
  • 00:14:38.010 --> 00:14:42.170
  • Solitude's a detox and it's the thing that removes
  • 00:14:42.180 --> 00:14:45.260
  • all the things that are between you and God.
  • 00:14:45.270 --> 00:14:49.240
  • When the time comes that you die,
  • 00:14:49.250 --> 00:14:51.040
  • those things are not going with you.
  • 00:14:51.050 --> 00:14:53.110
  • You want that have a relationship with God
  • 00:14:53.120 --> 00:14:55.250
  • in which you understand what it means to be with God
  • 00:14:55.260 --> 00:14:58.160
  • even when you can't see anything,
  • 00:14:58.170 --> 00:15:00.110
  • and hear anything, or reach anyone,
  • 00:15:00.120 --> 00:15:02.180
  • and that's what solitude does.
  • 00:15:02.190 --> 00:15:05.130
  • Most of all, solitude truly prepares us for community.
  • 00:15:05.140 --> 00:15:09.230
  • And I'll finish this with this last idea.
  • 00:15:09.240 --> 00:15:13.060
  • Christmas is about incarnation.
  • 00:15:13.070 --> 00:15:15.270
  • Incarnation is a word we use a lot.
  • 00:15:15.280 --> 00:15:17.150
  • Incarnation literally means to put meat on something.
  • 00:15:17.160 --> 00:15:20.130
  • If you speak Spanish, carne, you know, carne asada.
  • 00:15:20.140 --> 00:15:25.190
  • Carne means meat.
  • 00:15:25.200 --> 00:15:26.290
  • Incarnation means to literally put skin and bones on something.
  • 00:15:27.000 --> 00:15:29.050
  • There's a old story of a girl who was crying and the dad
  • 00:15:29.060 --> 00:15:32.240
  • came in and she said, "I'm scared of the lightning outside
  • 00:15:32.250 --> 00:15:35.130
  • and I'm just terrified."
  • 00:15:35.140 --> 00:15:36.230
  • And he's like, "Okay, well, we'll pray."
  • 00:15:36.240 --> 00:15:38.050
  • And they prayed and they prayed that God would come
  • 00:15:38.060 --> 00:15:40.170
  • and comfort her.
  • 00:15:40.180 --> 00:15:42.020
  • And he said, "Do you feel better?"
  • 00:15:42.030 --> 00:15:43.120
  • And she said, "No, I need a God with some skin on him."
  • 00:15:43.130 --> 00:15:48.160
  • There is something to that, by the way, that for Christians,
  • 00:15:48.170 --> 00:15:51.000
  • we worship a God with skin.
  • 00:15:51.010 --> 00:15:53.210
  • We worship a God who became a human being.
  • 00:15:53.220 --> 00:15:56.050
  • And most of all, and this is so important,
  • 00:15:56.060 --> 00:15:57.210
  • this is what's so often lost in Christian theology.
  • 00:15:57.220 --> 00:15:59.270
  • We worship a God that is among us in you and me, that although
  • 00:15:59.280 --> 00:16:04.100
  • we recognize that Jesus Christ is the Son of God,
  • 00:16:04.110 --> 00:16:07.040
  • and he was enfleshed, and he was with us,
  • 00:16:07.050 --> 00:16:09.190
  • well, in that physical way, it feels like
  • 00:16:09.200 --> 00:16:11.060
  • he's not here anymore, but Christianity has always
  • 00:16:11.070 --> 00:16:13.090
  • taught that he is, that he's in you and he's in me,
  • 00:16:13.100 --> 00:16:16.290
  • that because the Holy Spirit lives within us that literally
  • 00:16:17.000 --> 00:16:20.050
  • when another Christian hugs you, even though that person
  • 00:16:20.060 --> 00:16:22.180
  • is hugging you, Jesus is hugging you too.
  • 00:16:22.190 --> 00:16:25.280
  • And the most profound experiences you can have
  • 00:16:25.290 --> 00:16:28.130
  • of God's goodness and the devil's evil is always going
  • 00:16:28.140 --> 00:16:32.070
  • to be through the body of another person.
  • 00:16:32.080 --> 00:16:34.280
  • It's always gonna be when someone lovingly puts a hand on
  • 00:16:34.290 --> 00:16:38.030
  • your shoulder or in an evil way, hits you or harms you in some
  • 00:16:38.040 --> 00:16:41.180
  • way, that the best goodness and the worst evil always comes
  • 00:16:41.190 --> 00:16:45.290
  • through the body of another.
  • 00:16:46.000 --> 00:16:47.250
  • And this is what I wanna point out to you,
  • 00:16:47.260 --> 00:16:49.110
  • friends, if that you can't just experience God in the beautiful,
  • 00:16:49.120 --> 00:16:53.060
  • solitude wonderful ways, you know,
  • 00:16:53.070 --> 00:16:54.290
  • all the worship music, the things that you do in silent.
  • 00:16:55.000 --> 00:16:57.060
  • You also have to experience God through people,
  • 00:16:57.070 --> 00:17:01.230
  • that God wants to engage with you most of all through others,
  • 00:17:01.240 --> 00:17:05.220
  • through community.
  • 00:17:05.230 --> 00:17:07.020
  • And that's why the church matters.
  • 00:17:07.030 --> 00:17:10.070
  • Today, more than ever, science has now become
  • 00:17:10.080 --> 00:17:15.180
  • in our modern society, the front,
  • 00:17:15.190 --> 00:17:17.090
  • like the main way in which people
  • 00:17:17.100 --> 00:17:19.110
  • view the world is through science.
  • 00:17:19.120 --> 00:17:20.280
  • It's really a shame because even though science is
  • 00:17:20.290 --> 00:17:23.090
  • such a wonderful and important discipline,
  • 00:17:23.100 --> 00:17:25.220
  • it's not the only discipline.
  • 00:17:25.230 --> 00:17:27.060
  • And I've watched as things like philosophy, and history,
  • 00:17:27.070 --> 00:17:31.020
  • and especially religion, have now kind of been
  • 00:17:31.030 --> 00:17:33.080
  • overshadowed in many ways by science.
  • 00:17:33.090 --> 00:17:35.110
  • And science has attempted to create meaning
  • 00:17:35.120 --> 00:17:37.240
  • for everyone while, you know, things like religion have
  • 00:17:37.250 --> 00:17:41.100
  • diminished in secular society.
  • 00:17:41.110 --> 00:17:43.270
  • But science can't do it.
  • 00:17:43.280 --> 00:17:45.250
  • And one real way that this shows itself is through technology,
  • 00:17:45.260 --> 00:17:49.120
  • how we try and create community through technology.
  • 00:17:49.130 --> 00:17:51.270
  • We have more ways to connect with each other
  • 00:17:51.280 --> 00:17:54.060
  • than we've ever had.
  • 00:17:54.070 --> 00:17:55.160
  • If we're friends, I can call you.
  • 00:17:55.170 --> 00:17:57.270
  • I can email you. I can FaceTime you.
  • 00:17:57.280 --> 00:18:00.170
  • I can text you. I can Facebook you.
  • 00:18:00.180 --> 00:18:03.080
  • I can tweet you. I can YouTube you.
  • 00:18:03.090 --> 00:18:05.180
  • And the list goes on and on and on.
  • 00:18:05.190 --> 00:18:09.030
  • There are more and more ways in which we can connect
  • 00:18:09.040 --> 00:18:11.290
  • and yet community has never been more fake and fragmented
  • 00:18:12.000 --> 00:18:15.090
  • in our nation's history.
  • 00:18:15.100 --> 00:18:20.010
  • We are training ourselves that the best way to have community
  • 00:18:20.020 --> 00:18:23.060
  • is the safest way and that is hiding behind a screen.
  • 00:18:23.070 --> 00:18:27.200
  • The best way to have community is to pick the perfect picture,
  • 00:18:27.210 --> 00:18:31.020
  • and the perfect personal description, and show only
  • 00:18:31.030 --> 00:18:33.140
  • the best memories to the people I'm connected with.
  • 00:18:33.150 --> 00:18:37.040
  • Never posting a picture of me weeping.
  • 00:18:37.050 --> 00:18:39.260
  • Never posting a picture of me sick.
  • 00:18:39.270 --> 00:18:42.090
  • Never posting a picture of me feeling alone
  • 00:18:42.100 --> 00:18:46.180
  • because ya need God with skin on him.
  • 00:18:46.190 --> 00:18:49.150
  • You need to feel community.
  • 00:18:49.160 --> 00:18:50.250
  • You need to actually shake hands, and hug your friends,
  • 00:18:50.260 --> 00:18:53.240
  • and actually talk to people face to face,
  • 00:18:53.250 --> 00:18:56.140
  • and have an actual shoulder to cry on when you weep.
  • 00:18:56.150 --> 00:18:59.120
  • We need community.
  • 00:18:59.130 --> 00:19:00.240
  • For the people going crazy, technology is meant
  • 00:19:00.250 --> 00:19:05.040
  • to be like vitamins, not food.
  • 00:19:05.050 --> 00:19:06.250
  • It's meant to help us.
  • 00:19:06.260 --> 00:19:08.050
  • It's not meant to be a replacement.
  • 00:19:08.060 --> 00:19:09.280
  • And that's what it's become.
  • 00:19:09.290 --> 00:19:11.180
  • Technology, all those things are great, but they're a supplement.
  • 00:19:11.190 --> 00:19:14.210
  • They're not the real deal, you know?
  • 00:19:14.220 --> 00:19:17.020
  • All of us need community and one of the best ways
  • 00:19:17.030 --> 00:19:21.270
  • that we experience God's love and power is through people.
  • 00:19:21.280 --> 00:19:26.110
  • And I want ya to know that when another human being
  • 00:19:26.120 --> 00:19:28.240
  • that is filled with the Holy Spirit says, "I love you,"
  • 00:19:28.250 --> 00:19:31.170
  • God is saying, "I love you" too.
  • 00:19:31.180 --> 00:19:32.270
  • He's using that person to say it to you.
  • 00:19:32.280 --> 00:19:36.110
  • And my bet is that the time you've experienced God the most,
  • 00:19:36.120 --> 00:19:40.020
  • the time you've experienced the devil the most
  • 00:19:40.030 --> 00:19:41.200
  • is through people.
  • 00:19:41.210 --> 00:19:43.050
  • That's what Christianity is.
  • 00:19:43.060 --> 00:19:44.150
  • It's the belief that through Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit
  • 00:19:44.160 --> 00:19:47.290
  • abides in every single person who has faith and that even
  • 00:19:48.000 --> 00:19:53.040
  • though those people can even harm you sometimes that God
  • 00:19:53.050 --> 00:19:55.270
  • is still in there somehow and all of us need community.
  • 00:19:55.280 --> 00:20:00.020
  • If you hear anything I say today, it's this,
  • 00:20:00.030 --> 00:20:02.290
  • when you think of your spirituality as training,
  • 00:20:03.000 --> 00:20:07.030
  • nothing trains you more than the friends you have.
  • 00:20:07.040 --> 00:20:11.110
  • Community is the most important mode of training that you have.
  • 00:20:11.120 --> 00:20:17.100
  • As a pastor, I have seen and talked to parents that have
  • 00:20:17.110 --> 00:20:21.110
  • children that do some pretty rotten things.
  • 00:20:21.120 --> 00:20:24.290
  • I've talked to the parents of murderers.
  • 00:20:25.000 --> 00:20:27.150
  • I've talked to the parents of rapists.
  • 00:20:27.160 --> 00:20:29.150
  • To the worst most harmful violent people in society
  • 00:20:29.160 --> 00:20:33.280
  • and the parents always say, always say the same thing.
  • 00:20:33.290 --> 00:20:38.230
  • "He was just with the wrong friends."
  • 00:20:38.240 --> 00:20:42.280
  • They never say, "He's evil.
  • 00:20:42.290 --> 00:20:44.140
  • He's a bad person."
  • 00:20:44.150 --> 00:20:45.240
  • They always say the same thing, "He just got in the wrong circle
  • 00:20:45.250 --> 00:20:50.010
  • with the wrong sorts of friends."
  • 00:20:50.020 --> 00:20:52.110
  • Because parents recognize that when their child goes from being
  • 00:20:52.120 --> 00:20:55.240
  • good to evil, by being someone who does good by being--
  • 00:20:55.250 --> 00:20:58.130
  • it almost always begins when they get
  • 00:20:58.140 --> 00:21:00.150
  • in the wrong circle of friends.
  • 00:21:00.160 --> 00:21:02.210
  • And we know that as parents, but why is that we don't want
  • 00:21:02.220 --> 00:21:06.050
  • for ourselves what we want for our children?
  • 00:21:06.060 --> 00:21:10.020
  • We want for ourselves to be rich but for our children,
  • 00:21:10.030 --> 00:21:12.050
  • we want them to be happy.
  • 00:21:12.060 --> 00:21:14.040
  • We want for ourselves to be fun but for our children,
  • 00:21:14.050 --> 00:21:16.070
  • we want them to be moral.
  • 00:21:16.080 --> 00:21:18.020
  • We want for ourselves to hang out with whoever we want
  • 00:21:18.030 --> 00:21:19.280
  • to hang out with.
  • 00:21:19.290 --> 00:21:21.080
  • We want our children to hang out with the right kinds of people.
  • 00:21:21.090 --> 00:21:23.060
  • It's because we love our children more
  • 00:21:23.070 --> 00:21:24.160
  • than we love ourselves.
  • 00:21:24.170 --> 00:21:25.260
  • And if you learn to love yourself, take the advice you
  • 00:21:25.270 --> 00:21:28.230
  • give to your kids and think about the kinds of friends
  • 00:21:28.240 --> 00:21:31.230
  • that you have.
  • 00:21:31.240 --> 00:21:33.030
  • And surround yourself--though you're gonna--you know,
  • 00:21:33.040 --> 00:21:34.260
  • it's important to reach people and help people
  • 00:21:34.270 --> 00:21:36.290
  • that are hurting, you should have friends in your life
  • 00:21:37.000 --> 00:21:40.090
  • that are Godly people that inspire you
  • 00:21:40.100 --> 00:21:42.110
  • to be a better person.
  • 00:21:42.120 --> 00:21:44.080
  • You should weave into your life people that are positive,
  • 00:21:44.090 --> 00:21:46.200
  • that love you, that are encouraging you,
  • 00:21:46.210 --> 00:21:48.130
  • that are forgiving you, that especially draw
  • 00:21:48.140 --> 00:21:51.050
  • out of your emotions and can weep with you,
  • 00:21:51.060 --> 00:21:53.290
  • and comfort you when you're going through hard times.
  • 00:21:54.000 --> 00:21:56.100
  • That's what the church is supposed to be.
  • 00:21:56.110 --> 00:21:59.110
  • Any church that is not that is not truly a church, it's a club.
  • 00:21:59.120 --> 00:22:04.100
  • And we need to form in every church, whether pastors,
  • 00:22:04.110 --> 00:22:07.170
  • or in our small groups, or community of people,
  • 00:22:07.180 --> 00:22:10.060
  • who encourage one another and who realign our hearts
  • 00:22:10.070 --> 00:22:13.190
  • with the kingdom reality that every human being
  • 00:22:13.200 --> 00:22:16.080
  • deserves dignity because every human being
  • 00:22:16.090 --> 00:22:18.170
  • is loved by God.
  • 00:22:18.180 --> 00:22:20.110
  • And we need to be realigned in our competitive, painful world
  • 00:22:20.120 --> 00:22:24.110
  • that always diminishes us that says we're not pretty enough,
  • 00:22:24.120 --> 00:22:26.280
  • or handsome enough, or successful enough,
  • 00:22:26.290 --> 00:22:29.020
  • or young enough, or whatever it is that
  • 00:22:29.030 --> 00:22:31.040
  • we come in line with God's love,
  • 00:22:31.050 --> 00:22:32.190
  • that those voices are fake, and phony,
  • 00:22:32.200 --> 00:22:35.120
  • and don't matter, that there's one voice that matters.
  • 00:22:35.130 --> 00:22:37.270
  • It says, "You're not what you do.
  • 00:22:37.280 --> 00:22:39.070
  • You know not what you have.
  • 00:22:39.080 --> 00:22:40.250
  • You're not what people say about you.
  • 00:22:40.260 --> 00:22:42.180
  • You're my son. You're my daughter.
  • 00:22:42.190 --> 00:22:44.240
  • And I love you.
  • 00:22:44.250 --> 00:22:46.040
  • And that will never go away," amen?
  • 00:22:46.050 --> 00:22:49.030
  • So, good.
  • 00:22:49.040 --> 00:22:56.040
  • My promise to you is this, that sucking sound that's in your
  • 00:22:56.050 --> 00:22:59.030
  • heart and you always turn to other things, turn to God.
  • 00:22:59.040 --> 00:23:02.170
  • Christ is calling.
  • 00:23:02.180 --> 00:23:03.270
  • He will fill it and that is the promise of Advent
  • 00:23:03.280 --> 00:23:07.050
  • and Christmas, amen?
  • 00:23:07.060 --> 00:23:09.050
  • Let's pray.
  • 00:23:09.060 --> 00:23:10.150
  • Father, we thank you that you are a good God,
  • 00:23:10.160 --> 00:23:13.180
  • the hound of heaven that never stops seeking after us.
  • 00:23:13.190 --> 00:23:18.120
  • Lord, we seek after you and we pray, Father,
  • 00:23:18.130 --> 00:23:21.260
  • that you would fill this void, this restlessness
  • 00:23:21.270 --> 00:23:25.020
  • that is in our heart.
  • 00:23:25.030 --> 00:23:26.120
  • We pray that it would always drive us into your arms
  • 00:23:26.130 --> 00:23:28.220
  • and not drive us into temptation.
  • 00:23:28.230 --> 00:23:30.260
  • Lord, renew us.
  • 00:23:30.270 --> 00:23:32.200
  • Save us. Change us.
  • 00:23:32.210 --> 00:23:34.130
  • And mold us into the likeness of your Son Jesus.
  • 00:23:34.140 --> 00:23:37.020
  • It's in his name we pray, amen.
  • 00:23:37.030 --> 00:23:40.030
  • And now the Lord bless you and keep you.
  • 00:23:41.070 --> 00:23:43.090
  • The Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you.
  • 00:23:43.100 --> 00:23:47.000
  • The Lord lift his countenance upon you and give you his peace.
  • 00:23:47.010 --> 00:23:50.140
  • In the name of the Father, and of the Son,
  • 00:23:50.150 --> 00:23:52.030
  • and of the Holy Spirit, amen.
  • 00:23:52.040 --> 00:23:55.010
  • 00:23:55.020 --> 00:23:58.110
  • Bobby: "Hour of Power" is passionate about bringing
  • 00:23:58.120 --> 00:24:00.060
  • dignity and discipleship to hurting people
  • 00:24:00.070 --> 00:24:02.140
  • all around the world.
  • 00:24:02.150 --> 00:24:03.290
  • As we're getting close to 2017, we're dreaming about
  • 00:24:04.000 --> 00:24:06.100
  • the big things we can do.
  • 00:24:06.110 --> 00:24:08.090
  • The more support we get, the more we're gonna
  • 00:24:08.100 --> 00:24:10.100
  • be able to accomplish.
  • 00:24:10.110 --> 00:24:11.220
  • Would you consider making a year-end gift
  • 00:24:11.230 --> 00:24:13.170
  • to this ministry?
  • 00:24:13.180 --> 00:24:15.020
  • It would mean the world to me.
  • 00:24:15.030 --> 00:24:16.230
  • Remember as always, God loves you and so do we.
  • 00:24:16.240 --> 00:24:19.130
  • male: My mother was diagnosed with cancer,
  • 00:24:21.110 --> 00:24:23.140
  • and we could no longer go to church together.
  • 00:24:23.150 --> 00:24:25.150
  • One Sunday while channel surfing,
  • 00:24:25.160 --> 00:24:27.070
  • I found "Hour of Power."
  • 00:24:27.080 --> 00:24:29.010
  • From that day forward, we never missed a service together.
  • 00:24:29.020 --> 00:24:32.010
  • Before my mother passed, we looked forward
  • 00:24:32.020 --> 00:24:34.090
  • to "Hour of Power" all week long.
  • 00:24:34.100 --> 00:24:36.110
  • On Sunday mornings, we greeted each other with excitement
  • 00:24:36.120 --> 00:24:39.120
  • saying, "We get to go to church today!"
  • 00:24:39.130 --> 00:24:42.130
  • A doctor told her she had 2 months to live,
  • 00:24:42.140 --> 00:24:44.190
  • but due to the nourishment of her faith through prayer
  • 00:24:44.200 --> 00:24:47.030
  • and watching "Hour of Power,"
  • 00:24:47.040 --> 00:24:48.250
  • God decided that she was to live for another 26 months.
  • 00:24:48.260 --> 00:24:51.190
  • Praise God.
  • 00:24:51.200 --> 00:24:53.120
  • "Hour of Power" provided us with the opportunity
  • 00:24:53.130 --> 00:24:55.040
  • to attend church when we needed it most
  • 00:24:55.050 --> 00:24:56.270
  • but were unable to go out.
  • 00:24:56.280 --> 00:24:58.200
  • I still look forward to watching "Hour of Power"
  • 00:24:58.210 --> 00:25:00.250
  • each week with the same eagerness as I did
  • 00:25:00.260 --> 00:25:02.250
  • when my mother was here.
  • 00:25:02.260 --> 00:25:04.120
  • I can still feel her holding my hand and saying,
  • 00:25:04.130 --> 00:25:07.030
  • "God loves you and so do I."
  • 00:25:07.040 --> 00:25:09.120
  • God bless you and everyone there.
  • 00:25:09.130 --> 00:25:11.240
  • Sincerely, Robert Dyer.
  • 00:25:11.250 --> 00:25:14.210
  • Hannah: Robert, your letter really touched me,
  • 00:25:14.220 --> 00:25:16.270
  • and I just hope that someday I'll have
  • 00:25:16.280 --> 00:25:19.040
  • that same relationship with my son
  • 00:25:19.050 --> 00:25:20.180
  • that I can sit there and hold his hand
  • 00:25:20.190 --> 00:25:22.220
  • and we could worship God together.
  • 00:25:22.230 --> 00:25:25.010
  • And I want to say that's just a beautiful thing
  • 00:25:25.020 --> 00:25:27.150
  • that you had with your mom.
  • 00:25:27.160 --> 00:25:29.040
  • Bobby: We tell these stories because we want you to know
  • 00:25:29.050 --> 00:25:31.210
  • when you give to "Hour of Power,"
  • 00:25:31.220 --> 00:25:33.130
  • you're not giving to us, to me and Hannah,
  • 00:25:33.140 --> 00:25:35.050
  • you're giving to guys like Robert and his mom.
  • 00:25:35.060 --> 00:25:38.030
  • People, many times, who can't even go to church
  • 00:25:38.040 --> 00:25:40.190
  • and people who maybe they feel burned by church
  • 00:25:40.200 --> 00:25:43.010
  • and just can't muster up the energy to go back
  • 00:25:43.020 --> 00:25:45.100
  • in the building, or people who are going
  • 00:25:45.110 --> 00:25:46.260
  • through time of despair, and we are there
  • 00:25:46.270 --> 00:25:49.030
  • to encourage them.
  • 00:25:49.040 --> 00:25:50.190
  • And it's your support that makes that possible.
  • 00:25:50.200 --> 00:25:53.100
  • And something like an eagles' donor or somebody
  • 00:25:53.110 --> 00:25:55.120
  • who gives as like a monthly thing and says,
  • 00:25:55.130 --> 00:25:57.120
  • "You know, 'Hour of Power,'
  • 00:25:57.130 --> 00:25:59.010
  • we're gonna be behind you every single month,"
  • 00:25:59.020 --> 00:26:00.170
  • that makes all the difference to us because it helps us know
  • 00:26:00.180 --> 00:26:03.180
  • how much we can do, and it helps us to be wise
  • 00:26:03.190 --> 00:26:05.100
  • and prudent with our money.
  • 00:26:05.110 --> 00:26:07.050
  • So, to all of you who continue to support us,
  • 00:26:07.060 --> 00:26:08.220
  • we are so thankful and we want you to know
  • 00:26:08.230 --> 00:26:10.210
  • that you are making a difference
  • 00:26:10.220 --> 00:26:12.100
  • in the world through your generosity.
  • 00:26:12.110 --> 00:26:14.140
  • male announcer: This week when you give to our ministry,
  • 00:26:14.150 --> 00:26:16.180
  • we wanna say a small thank you.
  • 00:26:16.190 --> 00:26:18.210
  • So, for any gift of $75 or more, we will send you this
  • 00:26:18.220 --> 00:26:22.210
  • "I am the beloved of God" blanket.
  • 00:26:22.220 --> 00:26:25.180
  • Whether a gift or a keepsake, let it remind you
  • 00:26:25.190 --> 00:26:28.140
  • that you are truly loved just as you are.
  • 00:26:28.150 --> 00:26:31.240
  • Your donations are what bring "Hour of Power"
  • 00:26:31.250 --> 00:26:34.000
  • into the hospitals, prisons, and homes of people
  • 00:26:34.010 --> 00:26:37.070
  • all around the world.
  • 00:26:37.080 --> 00:26:38.240
  • So, thank you for your support.
  • 00:26:38.250 --> 00:26:40.260
  • Call, write, or go online now.
  • 00:26:40.270 --> 00:26:44.000
  • The first Noel the angel did say
  • 00:26:47.130 --> 00:26:55.140
  • Was to certain poor shepherds
  • 00:26:55.150 --> 00:26:59.230
  • in fields as they lay
  • 00:26:59.240 --> 00:27:04.190
  • In fields where they lay keeping their sheep
  • 00:27:04.200 --> 00:27:13.020
