  • 00:03:02.100 --> 00:03:08.250
  • Bobby Schuller: If you're watching on TV,
  • 00:03:08.260 --> 00:03:10.050
  • we wanna say thank you for joining us,
  • 00:03:10.060 --> 00:03:11.160
  • and we want you to be a part of this community.
  • 00:03:11.170 --> 00:03:14.140
  • If you live in this area, come down today.
  • 00:03:14.150 --> 00:03:16.240
  • I wanna meet you. Hang out with us.
  • 00:03:16.250 --> 00:03:19.020
  • Come spend time with us. Worship with us.
  • 00:03:19.030 --> 00:03:21.020
  • We wanna see you. I wanna shake your hand.

  • We want you to be a part of this spiritual family.
  • 00:03:23.040 --> 00:03:25.250
  • Would you stand with me?
  • 00:03:25.260 --> 00:03:27.060
  • We're gonna say this confession together.
  • 00:03:27.070 --> 00:03:29.280
  • "I'm not what I do. I'm not what I have.
  • 00:03:34.270 --> 00:03:38.280
  • I'm not what people say about me.
  • 00:03:38.290 --> 00:03:42.020
  • I am the beloved of God. It's who I am.
  • 00:03:42.030 --> 00:03:46.140
  • No one can take it from me. I don't have to worry.
  • 00:03:46.150 --> 00:03:51.090
  • I don't have to hurry.
  • 00:03:51.100 --> 00:03:53.180
  • I can trust my friend Jesus and share his love
  • 00:03:53.190 --> 00:03:57.220
  • with the world," amen?
  • 00:03:57.230 --> 00:03:59.270
  • You can be seated.
  • 00:03:59.280 --> 00:04:01.150
  • It is true, you're not what you do.
  • 00:04:01.160 --> 00:04:03.010
  • And so today, I wanna proclaim over you that, one,
  • 00:04:03.020 --> 00:04:05.130
  • you can break the chains of sin in your life.
  • 00:04:05.140 --> 00:04:07.110
  • But two, you can also break the chains of shame.
  • 00:04:07.120 --> 00:04:10.160
  • And that's good news.
  • 00:04:10.170 --> 00:04:12.080
  • So, the passage today from Isaiah.
  • 00:04:12.090 --> 00:04:15.090
  • If you are a fan of Handel, this will sound familiar.
  • 00:04:15.100 --> 00:04:19.180
  • But Isaiah chapter 40, this is God's Word during
  • 00:04:19.190 --> 00:04:24.120
  • the Advent season.
  • 00:04:24.130 --> 00:04:26.250
  • "Comfort, comfort my people, says your God.
  • 00:04:26.260 --> 00:04:35.040
  • Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her that her hard
  • 00:04:35.050 --> 00:04:43.050
  • service has been completed, that her sin has been paid for, that
  • 00:04:43.060 --> 00:04:53.060
  • she has received from the Lord's hand a double portion
  • 00:04:53.220 --> 00:04:58.000
  • for all her sins.
  • 00:04:58.010 --> 00:05:00.220
  • A voice of one calling: 'In the wilderness prepare the way of
  • 00:05:00.230 --> 00:05:05.130
  • the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God.
  • 00:05:05.140 --> 00:05:11.100
  • Every valley shall be raised up, and every mountain
  • 00:05:11.110 --> 00:05:13.280
  • and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level,
  • 00:05:13.290 --> 00:05:19.160
  • the rugged places a plain.
  • 00:05:19.170 --> 00:05:22.140
  • And the glory of the Lord will be revealed,
  • 00:05:22.150 --> 00:05:25.180
  • and all people will see it together.
  • 00:05:25.190 --> 00:05:28.050
  • For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.'"
  • 00:05:28.060 --> 00:05:31.110
  • Every valley
  • 00:05:31.120 --> 00:05:34.110
  • That's the one. That's good.
  • 00:05:34.120 --> 00:05:38.080
  • Yes, this is a passage that says, "Comfort, comfort my
  • 00:05:38.090 --> 00:05:44.090
  • people and let them know that their hard work has been
  • 00:05:44.100 --> 00:05:48.070
  • recognized, and that their sins have been forgiven, and that
  • 00:05:48.080 --> 00:05:52.110
  • there has been given for their sins a double portion,
  • 00:05:52.120 --> 00:05:56.090
  • twice of what they needed to atone for their evil,
  • 00:05:56.100 --> 00:06:00.210
  • that they are reconciled, that they are renewed,
  • 00:06:00.220 --> 00:06:04.080
  • that they are restored.
  • 00:06:04.090 --> 00:06:05.270
  • In Jesus' day, he had basically two religious enemies,
  • 00:06:05.280 --> 00:06:10.190
  • the Sadducees and the Pharisees.
  • 00:06:10.200 --> 00:06:13.180
  • And these two groups of religious leaders
  • 00:06:13.190 --> 00:06:16.050
  • hated each other.
  • 00:06:16.060 --> 00:06:17.230
  • They hated each other.
  • 00:06:17.240 --> 00:06:19.160
  • The Pharisees were this like professorial, rabbinic--
  • 00:06:19.170 --> 00:06:24.110
  • they were kind of like the pastors.
  • 00:06:24.120 --> 00:06:25.210
  • They were the ones that taught the Bible.
  • 00:06:25.220 --> 00:06:28.110
  • And you became a Pharisee when you ascribed
  • 00:06:28.120 --> 00:06:30.120
  • to a certain school.
  • 00:06:30.130 --> 00:06:32.010
  • Jesus himself who was called rabbi, he would have been
  • 00:06:32.020 --> 00:06:34.250
  • thought of as a Pharisee by some people
  • 00:06:34.260 --> 00:06:36.070
  • if he had joined a particular sect.
  • 00:06:36.080 --> 00:06:37.220
  • And one reason the Pharisees didn't like him is that he
  • 00:06:37.230 --> 00:06:40.270
  • didn't align himself with any particular sect of Judaism.
  • 00:06:40.280 --> 00:06:44.030
  • You might say he was unlicensed.
  • 00:06:44.040 --> 00:06:47.030
  • He didn't have his ordination papers in order.
  • 00:06:47.040 --> 00:06:49.110
  • You know, he didn't go through all the things you're supposed
  • 00:06:49.120 --> 00:06:52.080
  • to go through to be a rabbi.
  • 00:06:52.090 --> 00:06:53.180
  • He just was a rabbi and I guess if you raise people
  • 00:06:53.190 --> 00:06:55.160
  • from the dead, that means you get to be a rabbi.
  • 00:06:55.170 --> 00:06:58.260
  • It does, by the way.
  • 00:06:58.270 --> 00:07:01.070
  • These Pharisees, you know, they really locked
  • 00:07:01.080 --> 00:07:03.280
  • into three things that made you a good, religious person.
  • 00:07:03.290 --> 00:07:08.290
  • Circumcision, dietary laws, and Sabbath.
  • 00:07:09.000 --> 00:07:13.220
  • It didn't matter what else you did, the Pharisees seemed
  • 00:07:13.230 --> 00:07:16.160
  • to revolve 100% around dietary loss, circumcision, and Sabbath.
  • 00:07:16.170 --> 00:07:23.000
  • Now, for the Jewish people, these were good things.
  • 00:07:23.010 --> 00:07:25.080
  • These were things that God commanded them to do.
  • 00:07:25.090 --> 00:07:27.110
  • They were signs of the covenant.
  • 00:07:27.120 --> 00:07:28.210
  • They were signs that there were people that were set apart.
  • 00:07:28.220 --> 00:07:30.250
  • There were signs that there were people that were in covenant
  • 00:07:30.260 --> 00:07:33.070
  • with God, that they endorsed justice and righteousness.
  • 00:07:33.080 --> 00:07:36.030
  • And yet, these good things became evil things
  • 00:07:36.040 --> 00:07:38.200
  • in the religious community because for the Pharisees,
  • 00:07:38.210 --> 00:07:41.240
  • it was only about these things and these things
  • 00:07:41.250 --> 00:07:44.240
  • to the strictest degree.
  • 00:07:44.250 --> 00:07:47.100
  • These Pharisees did not care about caring for the poor.
  • 00:07:47.110 --> 00:07:50.030
  • They did not care about other types
  • 00:07:50.040 --> 00:07:52.040
  • of righteousness and goodness.
  • 00:07:52.050 --> 00:07:53.200
  • They were unkind.
  • 00:07:53.210 --> 00:07:56.250
  • They were angry all the time.
  • 00:07:56.260 --> 00:07:59.000
  • They endorsed killing people that didn't follow their rules
  • 00:07:59.010 --> 00:08:02.110
  • the way they thought.
  • 00:08:02.120 --> 00:08:03.290
  • And worst of all, they were hypocrites.
  • 00:08:04.000 --> 00:08:05.150
  • They themselves didn't even follow the heavy burdens
  • 00:08:05.160 --> 00:08:09.110
  • that they placed on others.
  • 00:08:09.120 --> 00:08:11.130
  • Well, friends, I wanna tell you, that is not the kingdom of God.
  • 00:08:11.140 --> 00:08:13.230
  • The kingdom of God is not run by Pharisees.
  • 00:08:13.240 --> 00:08:16.290
  • It's run by, not the people that are too busy to get in.
  • 00:08:17.000 --> 00:08:19.000
  • It's run and led truly by the people.
  • 00:08:19.010 --> 00:08:21.270
  • Well, it's led by Jesus and they--and he is leading people
  • 00:08:21.280 --> 00:08:24.190
  • in the alleyways and the byways, the people that thought
  • 00:08:24.200 --> 00:08:26.130
  • we were never good enough, the tax collectors,
  • 00:08:26.140 --> 00:08:28.070
  • the prostitutes, the fishermen.
  • 00:08:28.080 --> 00:08:29.200
  • And I just wanna say to you that many of you who have been
  • 00:08:29.210 --> 00:08:33.180
  • in these kinds of circles, you carry guilt
  • 00:08:33.190 --> 00:08:35.110
  • and shame with you all the time.
  • 00:08:35.120 --> 00:08:37.150
  • Even when you're broken free that,
  • 00:08:37.160 --> 00:08:38.260
  • you still feel guilty all the time.
  • 00:08:38.270 --> 00:08:40.060
  • So, that's the Pharisees.
  • 00:08:40.070 --> 00:08:43.050
  • I also think today in the church
  • 00:08:43.060 --> 00:08:44.150
  • there are Sadducees.
  • 00:08:44.160 --> 00:08:45.250
  • In Jesus' day, the Sadducees were--they hated the Pharisees
  • 00:08:45.260 --> 00:08:49.100
  • and these were the guys that ran the temple.
  • 00:08:49.110 --> 00:08:52.010
  • Sadducees comes from a word zadok,
  • 00:08:52.020 --> 00:08:53.240
  • which means the high priest, and they're in charge
  • 00:08:53.250 --> 00:08:56.230
  • of sort of running the temple.
  • 00:08:56.240 --> 00:08:58.050
  • And the Sadducees really didn't believe in any
  • 00:08:58.060 --> 00:09:01.070
  • of the world traditions.
  • 00:09:01.080 --> 00:09:02.170
  • The didn't really believe in heaven or hell.
  • 00:09:02.180 --> 00:09:04.130
  • They didn't believe that there'd be recompense
  • 00:09:04.140 --> 00:09:06.010
  • for the decisions that you make.
  • 00:09:06.020 --> 00:09:07.170
  • And most of them really didn't even believe
  • 00:09:07.180 --> 00:09:08.280
  • in a spiritual world.
  • 00:09:08.290 --> 00:09:10.080
  • To them, being a Sadducee meant,
  • 00:09:10.090 --> 00:09:12.180
  • "I run this traditional thing, the temple.
  • 00:09:12.190 --> 00:09:15.030
  • I run the sacrifices.
  • 00:09:15.040 --> 00:09:16.220
  • I do all the orderly things.
  • 00:09:16.230 --> 00:09:18.080
  • I get to wear nice robes and interesting clothing."
  • 00:09:18.090 --> 00:09:21.070
  • And most importantly, they were wealthy
  • 00:09:21.080 --> 00:09:23.050
  • and they were aristocrats.
  • 00:09:23.060 --> 00:09:25.090
  • To the Sadducees, religion was a way to be involved
  • 00:09:25.100 --> 00:09:29.040
  • in Roman politics, politics of the day.
  • 00:09:29.050 --> 00:09:31.230
  • It was one way that Jewish men could climb the ladder
  • 00:09:31.240 --> 00:09:35.100
  • and be involved in secular leadership.
  • 00:09:35.110 --> 00:09:38.100
  • To them, moral life didn't matter.
  • 00:09:38.110 --> 00:09:41.060
  • They were considered very immoral men.
  • 00:09:41.070 --> 00:09:43.180
  • They were often found in the baths, it's said,
  • 00:09:43.190 --> 00:09:45.280
  • in their silken robes.
  • 00:09:45.290 --> 00:09:47.080
  • There's very little that you could recognize about them
  • 00:09:47.090 --> 00:09:49.290
  • that was good, righteous, or holy.
  • 00:09:50.000 --> 00:09:52.170
  • If you were to follow the Pharisees in those days,
  • 00:09:52.180 --> 00:09:55.000
  • that would have been harsh legalism.
  • 00:09:55.010 --> 00:09:56.110
  • But if you were to follow the Sadducees,
  • 00:09:56.120 --> 00:09:57.210
  • it would have been moral relativism, nothing matters.
  • 00:09:57.220 --> 00:10:01.170
  • And we have that today in the church as well.
  • 00:10:01.180 --> 00:10:04.000
  • And so today, I think you have--this is a metaphor
  • 00:10:04.010 --> 00:10:07.000
  • for the religious life that you've got harsh people
  • 00:10:07.010 --> 00:10:10.050
  • on one side and relativistic people on the other.
  • 00:10:10.060 --> 00:10:12.230
  • And the relativistic people create chains
  • 00:10:12.240 --> 00:10:15.040
  • because we just go ahead and we do whatever we want,
  • 00:10:15.050 --> 00:10:18.010
  • and then we feel this inner guilt and shame.
  • 00:10:18.020 --> 00:10:19.270
  • And we're like, "Oh no, it's just--it's just Freudian."
  • 00:10:19.280 --> 00:10:23.290
  • Or not Freudian. I don't know what you would say.
  • 00:10:24.000 --> 00:10:26.240
  • "It's just I--you know,
  • 00:10:26.250 --> 00:10:28.180
  • I'm carrying all of these societal--"
  • 00:10:28.190 --> 00:10:30.170
  • And so, especially if you have a graduate degree,
  • 00:10:30.180 --> 00:10:33.110
  • you're probably struggling with this, you know?
  • 00:10:33.120 --> 00:10:36.290
  • And so, yet our hearts don't agree with the decisions
  • 00:10:37.000 --> 00:10:40.120
  • that we make that we know are wrong.
  • 00:10:40.130 --> 00:10:44.140
  • And so, that creates--so both people are in chains.
  • 00:10:44.150 --> 00:10:47.080
  • The Pharisees create chains of legalism and the Sadducees
  • 00:10:47.090 --> 00:10:50.190
  • create chains of well, immorality that,
  • 00:10:50.200 --> 00:10:52.290
  • "I've been told this isn't wrong
  • 00:10:53.000 --> 00:10:54.090
  • but I just, I feel guilty all the time.
  • 00:10:54.100 --> 00:10:56.040
  • And I feel shame and this doesn't agree with--"
  • 00:10:56.050 --> 00:10:57.160
  • And so, now the milieu in a fast-paced, unreflective
  • 00:10:57.170 --> 00:11:04.070
  • religious church that we have today,
  • 00:11:04.080 --> 00:11:05.260
  • people just don't take the time to focus on their inner life.
  • 00:11:05.270 --> 00:11:10.250
  • "Just give me the easy road."
  • 00:11:10.260 --> 00:11:12.220
  • Both legalism and relativism are easy.
  • 00:11:12.230 --> 00:11:15.120
  • You either have to memorize three things or,
  • 00:11:15.130 --> 00:11:17.290
  • on the other hand, you just forget it altogether.
  • 00:11:18.000 --> 00:11:21.170
  • Friends, I want you to be free and I love you.
  • 00:11:21.180 --> 00:11:24.030
  • And there is freedom in Jesus Christ.
  • 00:11:24.040 --> 00:11:28.190
  • To be free from all of these chains,
  • 00:11:28.200 --> 00:11:30.120
  • to not live one day feeling guilty.
  • 00:11:30.130 --> 00:11:34.260
  • You can be that person.
  • 00:11:34.270 --> 00:11:36.060
  • Do you wanna be that person?
  • 00:11:36.070 --> 00:11:37.160
  • You can be today.
  • 00:11:37.170 --> 00:11:38.260
  • We all have the inner need to be good.
  • 00:11:38.270 --> 00:11:44.100
  • So, the first thing we do when we do something that is so
  • 00:11:44.110 --> 00:11:46.150
  • obviously wrong that everybody that is watching us,
  • 00:11:46.160 --> 00:11:48.280
  • is we go into inner attorney mode and justify our actions
  • 00:11:48.290 --> 00:11:52.000
  • because it is so hard to admit that we're not good.
  • 00:11:52.010 --> 00:11:56.130
  • Anybody ever done that before? Just me?
  • 00:11:56.140 --> 00:11:58.110
  • Am I the only one?
  • 00:11:58.120 --> 00:11:59.250
  • I'm the only one that blames the victim, all right.
  • 00:11:59.260 --> 00:12:03.050
  • We all do it because we all need to be good and that's why one
  • 00:12:03.060 --> 00:12:07.040
  • of the best things you can do when you do something wrong
  • 00:12:07.050 --> 00:12:09.040
  • is just repent and just to say, "I'm sorry."
  • 00:12:09.050 --> 00:12:12.160
  • And I just wanna say that for whatever reason you feel guilt,
  • 00:12:12.170 --> 00:12:14.170
  • it's painful.
  • 00:12:14.180 --> 00:12:16.140
  • It's painful.
  • 00:12:16.150 --> 00:12:18.290
  • The purpose of pain is to tell you
  • 00:12:19.000 --> 00:12:20.250
  • there's something wrong, fix it.
  • 00:12:20.260 --> 00:12:22.230
  • But to experience physical pain in your body
  • 00:12:22.240 --> 00:12:24.220
  • all the time is a terrible, terrible thing.
  • 00:12:24.230 --> 00:12:29.050
  • Am I right?
  • 00:12:29.060 --> 00:12:30.150
  • Some of you are experiencing that now.
  • 00:12:30.160 --> 00:12:31.250
  • It's the same with guilt.
  • 00:12:31.260 --> 00:12:33.050
  • Guilt is sometimes a symptom of immorality in your life
  • 00:12:33.060 --> 00:12:35.260
  • that needs to be repaired or fixed.
  • 00:12:35.270 --> 00:12:38.050
  • But very often, guilt can be like nerve damage where
  • 00:12:38.060 --> 00:12:42.200
  • nothing's wrong at all, except the nerve has been injured
  • 00:12:42.210 --> 00:12:47.020
  • and all it does is cause chronic pain in your life.
  • 00:12:47.030 --> 00:12:51.150
  • Some of you, especially if you grew up in a very strict
  • 00:12:51.160 --> 00:12:54.030
  • household or a strict religious environment,
  • 00:12:54.040 --> 00:12:56.140
  • you have spiritual nerve damage.
  • 00:12:56.150 --> 00:12:59.120
  • You're always feeling guilty all the time.
  • 00:12:59.130 --> 00:13:04.030
  • You're not guilty.
  • 00:13:04.040 --> 00:13:08.210
  • Some of you feel guilt and shame for something
  • 00:13:08.220 --> 00:13:11.130
  • somebody did to you.
  • 00:13:11.140 --> 00:13:14.130
  • It's not your fault. You're not guilty.
  • 00:13:14.140 --> 00:13:18.240
  • You are loved by God.
  • 00:13:18.250 --> 00:13:20.220
  • You are innocent, and I'm so sorry that people hurt you.
  • 00:13:20.230 --> 00:13:25.260
  • Many of us, we carry this guilt with us
  • 00:13:25.270 --> 00:13:28.070
  • and it's like nerve damage.
  • 00:13:28.080 --> 00:13:30.080
  • My mom was saying recently-- you know, in the '50s, churches,
  • 00:13:30.090 --> 00:13:34.090
  • especially evangelical churches, were much stricter.
  • 00:13:34.100 --> 00:13:36.160
  • My grandparents grew up in a strict church.
  • 00:13:36.170 --> 00:13:39.080
  • My mom and parents grew up in a strict church.
  • 00:13:39.090 --> 00:13:41.140
  • My mom was saying one time that many of the kids in her church,
  • 00:13:41.150 --> 00:13:44.280
  • when they became adults, all like really went over the deep
  • 00:13:44.290 --> 00:13:48.050
  • end because the church talked about hell all the time.
  • 00:13:48.060 --> 00:13:50.120
  • And it was like, "You go to hell if you dance.
  • 00:13:50.130 --> 00:13:52.190
  • You go to hell if you wear makeup.
  • 00:13:52.200 --> 00:13:53.290
  • You go to hell if you watch movies.
  • 00:13:54.000 --> 00:13:55.110
  • You go to hell if you listen to secular music."
  • 00:13:55.120 --> 00:13:56.290
  • And it was like--God's final analysis is that if you listen
  • 00:13:57.000 --> 00:14:02.160
  • to James Brown, you were gonna burn for eternity in hell.
  • 00:14:02.170 --> 00:14:05.170
  • And so, if that's-- well, what about--
  • 00:14:05.180 --> 00:14:09.190
  • why not do everything else?
  • 00:14:09.200 --> 00:14:12.100
  • And so, all of these kids had this mentality, "Well,
  • 00:14:12.110 --> 00:14:15.000
  • if I'm going to hell, nothing matters
  • 00:14:15.010 --> 00:14:16.280
  • so I might as well just do everything."
  • 00:14:16.290 --> 00:14:20.050
  • That's what chronic shame and guilt does
  • 00:14:20.060 --> 00:14:22.070
  • in the moral life of a person.
  • 00:14:22.080 --> 00:14:24.080
  • Guilt, chronic guilt, does not make you a better person.
  • 00:14:24.090 --> 00:14:27.230
  • It makes you a worse person.
  • 00:14:27.240 --> 00:14:32.260
  • I remember when I was in Swaziland with Hannah and we
  • 00:14:32.270 --> 00:14:35.080
  • were on a missionary trip, and we were there building gardens
  • 00:14:35.090 --> 00:14:38.200
  • with Bruce Wilkinson, the guy that wrote "Prayer of Jabez."
  • 00:14:38.210 --> 00:14:41.130
  • And as we were there, we were in this prayer gathering.
  • 00:14:41.140 --> 00:14:44.290
  • And the most obvious thing about Swaziland, this part of Africa,
  • 00:14:45.000 --> 00:14:47.290
  • it was being ravaged by AIDS.
  • 00:14:48.000 --> 00:14:50.190
  • And there were babies being born with AIDS and one out of every,
  • 00:14:50.200 --> 00:14:54.080
  • I think, five people in the country had HIV or AIDS.
  • 00:14:54.090 --> 00:14:57.200
  • And so, we're in this room at a prayer breakfast and I realized
  • 00:14:57.210 --> 00:15:00.020
  • that one out of every five people in this room has AIDS
  • 00:15:00.030 --> 00:15:04.090
  • and probably everyone in this room has lost someone
  • 00:15:04.100 --> 00:15:06.160
  • they love because of AIDS.
  • 00:15:06.170 --> 00:15:08.180
  • And most of the time, it wasn't that person's fault.
  • 00:15:08.190 --> 00:15:11.010
  • And so, they asked three pastors to get up and pray.
  • 00:15:11.020 --> 00:15:13.180
  • I was the third pastor and there was one guy before me.
  • 00:15:13.190 --> 00:15:16.100
  • He was a seminary student.
  • 00:15:16.110 --> 00:15:18.220
  • He got up and he said, "Father in heaven, you know
  • 00:15:18.230 --> 00:15:21.170
  • that AIDS--this AIDS epidemic in Swaziland didn't catch you
  • 00:15:21.180 --> 00:15:25.090
  • by surprise and this, in fact, was your plan, and even your
  • 00:15:25.100 --> 00:15:30.150
  • punishment for the sexual immorality of this nation.
  • 00:15:30.160 --> 00:15:33.230
  • We're so sorry, God, and we pray--"
  • 00:15:33.240 --> 00:15:36.090
  • And something like, you know, basically said,
  • 00:15:36.100 --> 00:15:38.190
  • "It's your fault that everybody's dying of AIDS.
  • 00:15:38.200 --> 00:15:41.150
  • Amen."
  • 00:15:41.160 --> 00:15:43.020
  • And then sat down.
  • 00:15:43.030 --> 00:15:44.270
  • And I just--and I was next.
  • 00:15:44.280 --> 00:15:48.160
  • Now you guys know I am-- I lack a filter.
  • 00:15:48.170 --> 00:15:52.010
  • So, it was like-- and I was like...
  • 00:15:52.020 --> 00:15:58.270
  • It was so funny.
  • 00:15:58.280 --> 00:16:01.110
  • I said, "God is not glorified in AIDS.
  • 00:16:01.120 --> 00:16:04.180
  • God hates AIDS.
  • 00:16:04.190 --> 00:16:06.200
  • And the glory of God will not be when people, children,
  • 00:16:06.210 --> 00:16:08.270
  • or babies die because of AIDS.
  • 00:16:08.280 --> 00:16:10.140
  • The glory of God will be recognized in this country
  • 00:16:10.150 --> 00:16:12.190
  • when AIDS is healed and God is coming to heal your AIDS.
  • 00:16:12.200 --> 00:16:15.140
  • Keep hope alive."
  • 00:16:15.150 --> 00:16:17.090
  • And that was--I didn't even pray, I just preached.
  • 00:16:17.100 --> 00:16:19.250
  • [congregation applauding]
  • 00:16:19.260 --> 00:16:24.200
  • So, two very-- so, of course,
  • 00:16:24.210 --> 00:16:26.160
  • it's a little bit of a strawman, right?
  • 00:16:26.170 --> 00:16:28.060
  • Because I'm the hero in the story and he's the bad guy.
  • 00:16:28.070 --> 00:16:30.120
  • But you know, in truth,
  • 00:16:30.130 --> 00:16:32.070
  • I ended up talking to this guy on the bus afterwards
  • 00:16:32.080 --> 00:16:35.160
  • and I recognized-- I started to talk about
  • 00:16:35.170 --> 00:16:37.280
  • his theology and we debated.
  • 00:16:37.290 --> 00:16:40.050
  • And to his credit, he actually sided with me at the end
  • 00:16:40.060 --> 00:16:42.200
  • that it was a mistake and he apologized.
  • 00:16:42.210 --> 00:16:45.040
  • But when we were talking on this bus, we were talking about sin
  • 00:16:45.050 --> 00:16:49.080
  • and he said, "Well, we're all sinners."
  • 00:16:49.090 --> 00:16:51.210
  • I said, "Well, that's true."
  • 00:16:51.220 --> 00:16:53.010
  • And he's like, "Well, I'm sinning now."
  • 00:16:53.020 --> 00:16:54.130
  • And I'm like, "Well, how are you sinning?"
  • 00:16:54.140 --> 00:16:55.270
  • He said--no, no, no, he was saying, "We sin all the time."
  • 00:16:55.280 --> 00:16:58.120
  • I was like, "No, we don't.
  • 00:16:58.130 --> 00:16:59.220
  • We don't sin all the time.
  • 00:16:59.230 --> 00:17:01.040
  • We sin sometimes and other times we don't."
  • 00:17:01.050 --> 00:17:03.150
  • You can actually go an hour without sinning.
  • 00:17:03.160 --> 00:17:05.150
  • You can actually go a day without sinning, you know?
  • 00:17:05.160 --> 00:17:08.160
  • Some of you, like my wife, can go a whole week without sinning.
  • 00:17:08.170 --> 00:17:13.240
  • [congregation applauding]
  • 00:17:13.250 --> 00:17:17.140
  • But and he said, "I'm sinning now."
  • 00:17:17.150 --> 00:17:20.050
  • And I said, "Well, how are you sinning?"
  • 00:17:20.060 --> 00:17:21.150
  • He said, "I don't know, I just am."
  • 00:17:21.160 --> 00:17:23.060
  • And many of you agree with this theology, but you don't--
  • 00:17:23.070 --> 00:17:26.280
  • you haven't thought it through.
  • 00:17:26.290 --> 00:17:28.250
  • What I think is if you say, "I'm always sinning even if I'm not
  • 00:17:28.260 --> 00:17:31.270
  • doing anything, even though I'm sleeping, I'm sinning,"
  • 00:17:31.280 --> 00:17:34.060
  • you're actually trivializing sin and you're engendering
  • 00:17:34.070 --> 00:17:37.260
  • in your life an inner life of shame and guilt
  • 00:17:37.270 --> 00:17:42.070
  • that does not breed hope, joy, and love,
  • 00:17:42.080 --> 00:17:45.290
  • and the other fruits of the Spirit.
  • 00:17:46.000 --> 00:17:47.100
  • It breeds contempt, anger, and legalism and really,
  • 00:17:47.110 --> 00:17:50.240
  • ruthless speeches like that.
  • 00:17:50.250 --> 00:17:56.020
  • The number-one reason people leave the church
  • 00:17:56.030 --> 00:17:58.050
  • is because they've sinned.
  • 00:17:58.060 --> 00:18:01.280
  • Most of the time when people do something that's wrong,
  • 00:18:01.290 --> 00:18:04.030
  • they leave the church but the church should be
  • 00:18:04.040 --> 00:18:05.220
  • where you go when you're caught in sin.
  • 00:18:05.230 --> 00:18:08.070
  • Church should be where you can go with your addictions,
  • 00:18:08.080 --> 00:18:10.180
  • your trials, your troubles and you get love.
  • 00:18:10.190 --> 00:18:12.140
  • The world is not gonna treat your sin with healing.
  • 00:18:12.150 --> 00:18:16.070
  • They're gonna either make you sin more
  • 00:18:16.080 --> 00:18:18.220
  • or they're gonna judge you.
  • 00:18:18.230 --> 00:18:20.040
  • The church should be a place where you can find rest.
  • 00:18:20.050 --> 00:18:24.110
  • God doesn't want you to feel guilt any more
  • 00:18:24.120 --> 00:18:28.010
  • than a doctor wants you to feel pain in your body.
  • 00:18:28.020 --> 00:18:31.080
  • And if you feel pain in the body,
  • 00:18:31.090 --> 00:18:33.040
  • it should drive you into the hospital.
  • 00:18:33.050 --> 00:18:34.200
  • If you feel guilt in your heart, it should drive you
  • 00:18:34.210 --> 00:18:37.200
  • into the loving hands of our Father.
  • 00:18:37.210 --> 00:18:42.250
  • Guilt should drive you into God's love
  • 00:18:42.260 --> 00:18:45.030
  • where it can be slathered in his goodness and in his grace.
  • 00:18:45.040 --> 00:18:51.190
  • And so, for all of you who come here today and you say,
  • 00:18:51.200 --> 00:18:55.080
  • "You know, I feel just guilt all the time,"
  • 00:18:55.090 --> 00:18:57.270
  • I want you to know that the cross is enough,
  • 00:18:57.280 --> 00:19:00.100
  • that even if your guilt is centered in immorality
  • 00:19:00.110 --> 00:19:03.110
  • and things you're doing, the guilt in and of itself,
  • 00:19:03.120 --> 00:19:06.130
  • if it's not driving you to church, and driving you to God,
  • 00:19:06.140 --> 00:19:08.230
  • and driving you to be a better person,
  • 00:19:08.240 --> 00:19:11.120
  • then you don't understand the love of God,
  • 00:19:11.130 --> 00:19:13.080
  • that he doesn't say to you, "You are your sins."
  • 00:19:13.090 --> 00:19:16.010
  • "You are not what you do.
  • 00:19:16.020 --> 00:19:19.140
  • You're my beloved son.
  • 00:19:19.150 --> 00:19:21.270
  • You're my beloved daughter.
  • 00:19:21.280 --> 00:19:24.040
  • Come and be with me and receive grace and have a new heart
  • 00:19:24.050 --> 00:19:28.050
  • in which you do what is right."
  • 00:19:28.060 --> 00:19:31.030
  • The last thing-- and I'm gonna talk
  • 00:19:31.040 --> 00:19:32.170
  • about this more maybe next week.
  • 00:19:32.180 --> 00:19:34.130
  • But if you constantly find yourself doing what is wrong,
  • 00:19:34.140 --> 00:19:40.290
  • the most important thing is to change your habits.
  • 00:19:41.000 --> 00:19:45.220
  • You know, a lot of times, we think that we choose what is
  • 00:19:45.230 --> 00:19:49.030
  • wrong, but usually, we chose what is wrong the first time.
  • 00:19:49.040 --> 00:19:52.080
  • We chose what is wrong the second time.
  • 00:19:52.090 --> 00:19:54.030
  • But by the third, fourth, and fifth time,
  • 00:19:54.040 --> 00:19:56.040
  • we're now in a rhythm or a habit
  • 00:19:56.050 --> 00:19:57.250
  • where we're not choosing much anymore.
  • 00:19:57.260 --> 00:20:02.060
  • The great American psychologist William James said that habits
  • 00:20:02.070 --> 00:20:06.030
  • are sort of like water, that what we do becomes like water.
  • 00:20:06.040 --> 00:20:11.110
  • Water always follows the same trickle, even up sometimes
  • 00:20:11.120 --> 00:20:14.230
  • and as it does, it creates a crevasse where every time
  • 00:20:14.240 --> 00:20:17.180
  • the water flows on that crevasse,
  • 00:20:17.190 --> 00:20:19.290
  • the surface is being trained
  • 00:20:20.000 --> 00:20:21.170
  • where just a gentle trickle can eventually, over a long enough
  • 00:20:21.180 --> 00:20:24.120
  • time, become the Grand Canyon, that it weaves
  • 00:20:24.130 --> 00:20:28.010
  • and cuts into your life.
  • 00:20:28.020 --> 00:20:29.270
  • And that if you wanna make new decisions,
  • 00:20:29.280 --> 00:20:33.140
  • you need to form new habits.
  • 00:20:33.150 --> 00:20:35.290
  • This is why the Scriptures say, "Do not conform any longer
  • 00:20:36.000 --> 00:20:39.020
  • to this world, the pattern of this world," right, the habits.
  • 00:20:39.030 --> 00:20:42.060
  • "But be transformed by the renewing of your mind."
  • 00:20:42.070 --> 00:20:45.190
  • In this wonderful book by Charles Duhigg called,
  • 00:20:45.200 --> 00:20:48.290
  • "The Power of Habits,"
  • 00:20:49.000 --> 00:20:50.090
  • he talks about this very thing that a lot of the good--
  • 00:20:50.100 --> 00:20:54.040
  • the good things that we do in life and a lot of
  • 00:20:54.050 --> 00:20:55.250
  • the bad things we do in life are the result of good habits
  • 00:20:55.260 --> 00:20:58.170
  • and bad habits.
  • 00:20:58.180 --> 00:21:00.110
  • It's not located in one single decision but all of the little
  • 00:21:00.120 --> 00:21:03.050
  • decisions that you make every single day.
  • 00:21:03.060 --> 00:21:07.030
  • One of the stories he tells is about a guy named Eugene Polley.
  • 00:21:07.040 --> 00:21:11.070
  • Eugene Polley had part of his brain destroyed from a virus,
  • 00:21:11.080 --> 00:21:14.180
  • and it meant that his memory was gone.
  • 00:21:14.190 --> 00:21:17.090
  • And in this story, Eugene Polley changed science because he--
  • 00:21:17.100 --> 00:21:21.190
  • when he was in his house, he knew it was his house,
  • 00:21:21.200 --> 00:21:23.180
  • but he couldn't draw a map of his house.
  • 00:21:23.190 --> 00:21:25.180
  • He didn't know where things were.
  • 00:21:25.190 --> 00:21:26.290
  • He was easily lost.
  • 00:21:27.000 --> 00:21:28.110
  • The scientist that did the report said that he--
  • 00:21:28.120 --> 00:21:30.100
  • as he's typing away, he goes, "Well, would you look at that?
  • 00:21:30.110 --> 00:21:33.200
  • That little computer.
  • 00:21:33.210 --> 00:21:35.170
  • You know, when I was an engineer,
  • 00:21:35.180 --> 00:21:37.010
  • that would have been on a 6-foot rack."
  • 00:21:37.020 --> 00:21:40.080
  • And then 2 minutes later be like, "Would you look at that?
  • 00:21:40.090 --> 00:21:43.150
  • You know in my day, that computer would
  • 00:21:43.160 --> 00:21:45.150
  • have been on a 6-foot rack."
  • 00:21:45.160 --> 00:21:48.070
  • Then about 5 minutes later, "Well, would you look at that?
  • 00:21:48.080 --> 00:21:52.040
  • You know in my day, that would have been on a 6-foot rack."
  • 00:21:52.050 --> 00:21:55.110
  • And this is kind of how he was, always lost,
  • 00:21:55.120 --> 00:21:57.190
  • didn't know how to do anything.
  • 00:21:57.200 --> 00:21:58.290
  • And one day his wife, you know, they told him,
  • 00:21:59.000 --> 00:22:01.210
  • "Well, Eugene needs exercise."
  • 00:22:01.220 --> 00:22:03.010
  • So, she was taking him out for a walk,
  • 00:22:03.020 --> 00:22:04.220
  • and they would go on the same path every single day.
  • 00:22:04.230 --> 00:22:07.090
  • One day, she woke up and he was gone.
  • 00:22:07.100 --> 00:22:09.180
  • She freaked out.
  • 00:22:09.190 --> 00:22:10.280
  • "What if he walks on to a freeway?
  • 00:22:10.290 --> 00:22:12.080
  • He's completely lost. He's out there.
  • 00:22:12.090 --> 00:22:13.180
  • Where is he?"
  • 00:22:13.190 --> 00:22:14.280
  • And she went out. She was screaming.
  • 00:22:14.290 --> 00:22:16.080
  • She called 911.
  • 00:22:16.090 --> 00:22:17.180
  • She was going up and down the roads trying to find him.
  • 00:22:17.190 --> 00:22:19.060
  • She came back and she was weeping and there he was sitting
  • 00:22:19.070 --> 00:22:21.280
  • in his chair watching The History Channel.
  • 00:22:21.290 --> 00:22:25.150
  • She saw next to him that there were pine cones.
  • 00:22:25.160 --> 00:22:27.080
  • He had gathered those pine cones because he went on the same walk
  • 00:22:27.090 --> 00:22:31.060
  • and what he realized was that although he wasn't able
  • 00:22:31.070 --> 00:22:33.260
  • to learn or process memory, there was a different part
  • 00:22:33.270 --> 00:22:36.110
  • of his mind that was attune to habit.
  • 00:22:36.120 --> 00:22:39.010
  • He could actually, even though his brain wasn't working,
  • 00:22:39.020 --> 00:22:42.050
  • she could train it into habits.
  • 00:22:42.060 --> 00:22:44.140
  • So, he did that same walk perfectly.
  • 00:22:44.150 --> 00:22:46.100
  • She followed him several times.
  • 00:22:46.110 --> 00:22:48.130
  • She said he would come home sometimes--
  • 00:22:48.140 --> 00:22:50.170
  • once he came home with rocks.
  • 00:22:50.180 --> 00:22:53.070
  • Another time he came home with a wallet.
  • 00:22:53.080 --> 00:22:55.130
  • And another time he came home with a puppy,
  • 00:22:55.140 --> 00:22:57.220
  • and he never knew where he got these things.
  • 00:22:57.230 --> 00:23:00.170
  • He just had them.
  • 00:23:00.180 --> 00:23:03.040
  • 'Cause he didn't know what was going on
  • 00:23:03.050 --> 00:23:04.190
  • but he followed a habit.
  • 00:23:04.200 --> 00:23:06.200
  • All of that to say, friends, that all of us have built within
  • 00:23:06.210 --> 00:23:10.030
  • your minds something that is--
  • 00:23:10.040 --> 00:23:11.200
  • aside from what we learn and what we study,
  • 00:23:11.210 --> 00:23:13.250
  • we have our habits, that even when we're unconscious,
  • 00:23:13.260 --> 00:23:16.140
  • even when you're sleepwalking, we engage in these habits.
  • 00:23:16.150 --> 00:23:19.280
  • And if you do things enough times,
  • 00:23:19.290 --> 00:23:22.010
  • it becomes easy.
  • 00:23:22.020 --> 00:23:24.010
  • And this is why Jesus talks about walking in the easy yoke.
  • 00:23:24.020 --> 00:23:27.030
  • It's hard to do what Jesus teaches us to do unless
  • 00:23:27.040 --> 00:23:30.200
  • what Jesus says are habits.
  • 00:23:30.210 --> 00:23:34.150
  • No matter who you are, chronic guilt is a chain
  • 00:23:34.160 --> 00:23:38.080
  • and in Jesus' name, may your chains be broken.
  • 00:23:38.090 --> 00:23:42.270
  • Don't feel guilty anymore.
  • 00:23:42.280 --> 00:23:46.290
  • You get a break today from guilt.
  • 00:23:47.000 --> 00:23:48.240
  • You want it?
  • 00:23:48.250 --> 00:23:50.040
  • Doctor's prescription, you get one day to not feel guilty.
  • 00:23:50.050 --> 00:23:54.220
  • Just take a break today from your guilt,
  • 00:23:54.230 --> 00:23:57.200
  • and walk in God's love, and embrace his goodness
  • 00:23:57.210 --> 00:24:01.190
  • and that will form you into being a moral and good person.
  • 00:24:01.200 --> 00:24:05.160
  • Let's pray.
  • 00:24:05.170 --> 00:24:06.260
  • In Jesus' name, we thank you, Father,
  • 00:24:06.270 --> 00:24:09.050
  • that your cross is sufficient.
  • 00:24:09.060 --> 00:24:11.000
  • If you're watching us today or are here this morning
  • 00:24:11.010 --> 00:24:13.180
  • and you wanna follow Christ, repeat these words after me.
  • 00:24:13.190 --> 00:24:17.070
  • "Father in heaven, forgive me of my sin.
  • 00:24:17.080 --> 00:24:22.100
  • Break my chains.
  • 00:24:22.110 --> 00:24:24.160
  • I trust in the work of Jesus Christ.
  • 00:24:24.170 --> 00:24:28.130
  • Help me live like him. Fill me with your Holy Spirit.
  • 00:24:28.140 --> 00:24:34.130
  • In Jesus' name, amen."
  • 00:24:34.140 --> 00:24:38.030
  • 00:24:38.040 --> 00:24:41.080
  • Bobby: "Hour of Power" is passionate about bringing
  • 00:24:41.090 --> 00:24:43.080
  • dignity and discipleship to hurting people
  • 00:24:43.090 --> 00:24:45.010
  • all around the world.
  • 00:24:45.020 --> 00:24:46.110
  • As we're getting close to 2017, we're dreaming about
  • 00:24:46.120 --> 00:24:49.080
  • the big things we can do.
  • 00:24:49.090 --> 00:24:51.010
  • The more support we get,
  • 00:24:51.020 --> 00:24:52.160
  • the more we're gonna be able to accomplish.
  • 00:24:52.170 --> 00:24:53.290
  • Would you consider making
  • 00:24:54.000 --> 00:24:55.160
  • a year-end gift to this ministry?
  • 00:24:55.170 --> 00:24:57.160
  • It would mean the world to me.
  • 00:24:57.170 --> 00:25:00.080
  • Remember as always, God loves you and so do we.
  • 00:25:00.090 --> 00:25:04.060
  • male: My mother was diagnosed with cancer,
  • 00:25:04.070 --> 00:25:06.100
  • and we could no longer go to church together.
  • 00:25:06.110 --> 00:25:08.110
  • One Sunday while channel surfing,
  • 00:25:08.120 --> 00:25:10.030
  • I found "Hour of Power."
  • 00:25:10.040 --> 00:25:11.270
  • From that day forward, we never missed a service together.
  • 00:25:11.280 --> 00:25:14.270
  • Before my mother passed, we looked forward
  • 00:25:14.280 --> 00:25:17.050
  • to "Hour of Power" all week long.
  • 00:25:17.060 --> 00:25:19.070
  • On Sunday mornings, we greeted each other with excitement
  • 00:25:19.080 --> 00:25:22.080
  • saying, "We get to go to church today!"
  • 00:25:22.090 --> 00:25:25.090
  • A doctor told her she had 2 months to live,
  • 00:25:25.100 --> 00:25:27.150
  • but due to the nourishment of her faith through prayer
  • 00:25:27.160 --> 00:25:29.290
  • and watching "Hour of Power,"
  • 00:25:30.000 --> 00:25:31.210
  • God decided that she was to live for another 26 months.
  • 00:25:31.220 --> 00:25:34.150
  • Praise God.
  • 00:25:34.160 --> 00:25:36.080
  • "Hour of Power" provided us with the opportunity
  • 00:25:36.090 --> 00:25:38.000
  • to attend church when we needed it most
  • 00:25:38.010 --> 00:25:39.230
  • but were unable to go out.
  • 00:25:39.240 --> 00:25:41.160
  • I still look forward to watching "Hour of Power"
  • 00:25:41.170 --> 00:25:43.190
  • each week with the same eagerness as I did
  • 00:25:43.200 --> 00:25:45.190
  • when my mother was here.
  • 00:25:45.200 --> 00:25:47.060
  • I can still feel her holding my hand and saying,
  • 00:25:47.070 --> 00:25:49.270
  • "God loves you and so do I."
  • 00:25:49.280 --> 00:25:52.060
  • God bless you and everyone there.
  • 00:25:52.070 --> 00:25:54.180
  • Sincerely, Robert Dyer.
  • 00:25:54.190 --> 00:25:57.150
  • Hannah: Robert, your letter really touched me,
  • 00:25:57.160 --> 00:25:59.210
  • and I just hope that someday I'll have
  • 00:25:59.220 --> 00:26:02.000
  • that same relationship with my son
  • 00:26:02.010 --> 00:26:03.140
  • that I can sit there and hold his hand
  • 00:26:03.150 --> 00:26:05.180
  • and we could worship God together.
  • 00:26:05.190 --> 00:26:07.270
  • And I want to say that's just a beautiful thing
  • 00:26:07.280 --> 00:26:10.110
  • that you had with your mom.
  • 00:26:10.120 --> 00:26:12.000
  • Bobby: We tell these stories because we want you to know
  • 00:26:12.010 --> 00:26:14.170
  • when you give to "Hour of Power,"
  • 00:26:14.180 --> 00:26:16.090
  • you're not giving to us, to me and Hannah,
  • 00:26:16.100 --> 00:26:18.010
  • you're giving to guys like Robert and his mom.
  • 00:26:18.020 --> 00:26:20.290
  • People, many times, who can't even go to church
  • 00:26:21.000 --> 00:26:23.150
  • and people who maybe they feel burned by church
  • 00:26:23.160 --> 00:26:25.270
  • and just can't muster up the energy to go back
  • 00:26:25.280 --> 00:26:28.060
  • in the building, or people who are going
  • 00:26:28.070 --> 00:26:29.220
  • through time of despair, and we are there
  • 00:26:29.230 --> 00:26:31.290
  • to encourage them.
  • 00:26:32.000 --> 00:26:33.150
  • And it's your support that makes that possible.
  • 00:26:33.160 --> 00:26:36.060
  • And something like an eagles' donor or somebody
  • 00:26:36.070 --> 00:26:38.080
  • who gives as like a monthly thing and says,
  • 00:26:38.090 --> 00:26:40.080
  • "You know, 'Hour of Power,'
  • 00:26:40.090 --> 00:26:41.270
  • we're gonna be behind you every single month,"
  • 00:26:41.280 --> 00:26:43.110
  • that makes all the difference to us because it helps us know
  • 00:26:43.120 --> 00:26:46.120
  • how much we can do, and it helps us to be wise
  • 00:26:46.130 --> 00:26:48.040
  • and prudent with our money.
  • 00:26:48.050 --> 00:26:49.290
  • So, to all of you who continue to support us,
  • 00:26:50.000 --> 00:26:51.160
  • we are so thankful and we want you to know
  • 00:26:51.170 --> 00:26:53.150
  • that you are making a difference
  • 00:26:53.160 --> 00:26:55.040
  • in the world through your generosity.
  • 00:26:55.050 --> 00:26:57.080
  • male announcer: This week when you give to our ministry,
  • 00:26:57.090 --> 00:26:59.120
  • we wanna say a small thank you.
  • 00:26:59.130 --> 00:27:01.170
  • So, for any gift of $75 or more, we will send you this
  • 00:27:01.180 --> 00:27:05.170
  • "I am the beloved of God" blanket.
  • 00:27:05.180 --> 00:27:08.140
  • Whether a gift or a keepsake, let it remind you
  • 00:27:08.150 --> 00:27:11.100
  • that you are truly loved just as you are.
  • 00:27:11.110 --> 00:27:14.200
  • Your donations are what bring "Hour of Power"
  • 00:27:14.210 --> 00:27:16.260
  • into the hospitals, prisons, and homes of people
  • 00:27:16.270 --> 00:27:20.030
  • all around the world.
  • 00:27:20.040 --> 00:27:21.200
  • So, thank you for your support.
  • 00:27:21.210 --> 00:27:23.220
  • Call, write, or go online now.
  • 00:27:23.230 --> 00:27:26.260
