  • [congregation applauding]
  • 00:00:01.000 --> 00:00:10.150
  • Bobby Schuller: Well, friends, we say this creed
  • 00:00:10.160 --> 00:00:12.130
  • every single Sunday, and I'm gonna invite you to do it.
  • 00:00:12.140 --> 00:00:14.100
  • Would you hold your hands out like this
  • 00:00:14.110 --> 00:00:15.280
  • as a sign of receiving?
  • 00:00:15.290 --> 00:00:18.030
  • We're gonna say this together.
  • 00:00:18.040 --> 00:00:20.000
  • "I'm not what I do. I'm not what I have.
  • 00:00:20.010 --> 00:00:24.040
  • I'm not what people say about me.
  • 00:00:24.050 --> 00:00:27.030
  • I am the beloved of God. It's who I am.
  • 00:00:27.040 --> 00:00:31.130
  • No one can take it from me. I don't have to worry.
  • 00:00:31.140 --> 00:00:35.240
  • I don't have to hurry.
  • 00:00:35.250 --> 00:00:37.240
  • I can trust my friend Jesus and share his love with the world."
  • 00:00:37.250 --> 00:00:42.260
  • Thanks. You can be seated.
  • 00:00:42.270 --> 00:00:44.090
  • And that is your greatest treasure.
  • 00:00:44.100 --> 00:00:48.160
  • Your greatest treasure is that you're treasured
  • 00:00:48.170 --> 00:00:50.120
  • by a loving and a good God.
  • 00:00:50.130 --> 00:00:52.160
  • And man, is that the truth. He treasures you.
  • 00:00:52.170 --> 00:00:55.190
  • And today we're gonna talk about faith.
  • 00:00:55.200 --> 00:00:58.100
  • Faith is trusting the Word of God that it is true,
  • 00:00:58.110 --> 00:01:02.060
  • that it is--that God is for you,
  • 00:01:02.070 --> 00:01:03.290
  • that God loves you, that God will bless you
  • 00:01:04.000 --> 00:01:05.220
  • and you believe that.
  • 00:01:05.230 --> 00:01:07.160
  • You are a person who trusts in God and not in this world.
  • 00:01:07.170 --> 00:01:12.280
  • And in--and you'll endure in that faith and as you do,
  • 00:01:12.290 --> 00:01:15.200
  • all of heaven will open up to bless you with opportunity,
  • 00:01:15.210 --> 00:01:19.120
  • with favor, with forgiveness, with wisdom.
  • 00:01:19.130 --> 00:01:22.230
  • Good things are coming.
  • 00:01:22.240 --> 00:01:24.230
  • So, to trust in God we have to believe that God actually
  • 00:01:24.240 --> 00:01:30.090
  • believes in us, that God really does love us,
  • 00:01:30.100 --> 00:01:34.060
  • that he does trust that in creating you
  • 00:01:34.070 --> 00:01:36.280
  • he made something pretty spectacular.
  • 00:01:36.290 --> 00:01:41.040
  • Most of us don't believe that deep down inside.
  • 00:01:41.050 --> 00:01:44.030
  • You do, but a lot of us struggle with that.
  • 00:01:44.040 --> 00:01:48.270
  • To have faith in God means to have faith that God has
  • 00:01:48.280 --> 00:01:52.130
  • the best for us in mind,
  • 00:01:52.140 --> 00:01:55.070
  • that God wants us to go to heaven,
  • 00:01:55.080 --> 00:01:57.020
  • that God wants us to thrive, that God wants us to do well.
  • 00:01:57.030 --> 00:01:59.060
  • And he does.
  • 00:01:59.070 --> 00:02:01.110
  • I remember when I was a kid, I went to this Baptist school
  • 00:02:01.120 --> 00:02:06.080
  • and it was a great school, actually.
  • 00:02:06.090 --> 00:02:07.290
  • It was--I had a great experience.
  • 00:02:08.000 --> 00:02:09.180
  • But you know, every batch of apples has a got
  • 00:02:09.190 --> 00:02:11.160
  • a rotten one in it somewhere.
  • 00:02:11.170 --> 00:02:13.140
  • And I had this teacher and she sat us all down.
  • 00:02:13.150 --> 00:02:17.230
  • I think I was in 4th or 5th grade,
  • 00:02:17.240 --> 00:02:19.240
  • which means I had to be maybe 10, you know, we're kids.
  • 00:02:19.250 --> 00:02:22.190
  • And we sit down and we're learning
  • 00:02:22.200 --> 00:02:24.170
  • a Bible study about Noah.
  • 00:02:24.180 --> 00:02:27.220
  • And she asked the class, "Class, how did God destroy
  • 00:02:27.230 --> 00:02:29.250
  • the world the first time?"
  • 00:02:29.260 --> 00:02:32.080
  • And we said, "With the flood.
  • 00:02:32.090 --> 00:02:34.000
  • He destroyed the world with the flood."
  • 00:02:34.010 --> 00:02:35.280
  • And then she said, "And what is the rainbow?"
  • 00:02:35.290 --> 00:02:38.170
  • "It's a promise that he won't destroy the world again."
  • 00:02:38.180 --> 00:02:41.100
  • She's like, "No!
  • 00:02:41.110 --> 00:02:43.040
  • It's a promise that he won't destroy the world again
  • 00:02:43.050 --> 00:02:45.100
  • with a flood."
  • 00:02:45.110 --> 00:02:47.120
  • I'm like, "Oh, okay."
  • 00:02:47.130 --> 00:02:49.030
  • And she goes, "So what does that mean?
  • 00:02:49.040 --> 00:02:51.150
  • What does that mean?"
  • 00:02:51.160 --> 00:02:53.050
  • "We don't know."
  • 00:02:53.060 --> 00:02:54.230
  • "That he's gonna destroy the world again with fire."
  • 00:02:54.240 --> 00:02:57.200
  • She didn't say it like that, but I--you know?
  • 00:02:57.210 --> 00:02:59.190
  • She said, "He's gonna destroy the whole world with fire."
  • 00:02:59.200 --> 00:03:04.060
  • We're like, "Oh, he's gonna destroy the world with--
  • 00:03:04.070 --> 00:03:06.200
  • that's what the rainbow means."
  • 00:03:06.210 --> 00:03:08.120
  • And we're like yeah.
  • 00:03:08.130 --> 00:03:11.220
  • And she said, "You know, God will--
  • 00:03:11.230 --> 00:03:13.260
  • burns things to purify them."
  • 00:03:13.270 --> 00:03:16.080
  • I'm like, I don't know about that, but okay.
  • 00:03:16.090 --> 00:03:18.200
  • And she said--she said, "And that's what hell is.
  • 00:03:18.210 --> 00:03:22.250
  • Hell is where you will go if you don't confess all your sins."
  • 00:03:22.260 --> 00:03:29.150
  • And so, we were like, "Okay."
  • 00:03:29.160 --> 00:03:32.010
  • And she's like, "In other words--"
  • 00:03:32.020 --> 00:03:33.290
  • Basically what she said was-- and she kept going on this,
  • 00:03:34.000 --> 00:03:36.200
  • "If you don't confess every single sin you've ever done
  • 00:03:36.210 --> 00:03:41.250
  • at the point of your death, you go to hell."
  • 00:03:41.260 --> 00:03:44.190
  • Like you've gotta not only remember them all.
  • 00:03:44.200 --> 00:03:47.080
  • That'd be hard for me. I got a lot.
  • 00:03:47.090 --> 00:03:51.050
  • You got to remember them all, and you gotta confess them,
  • 00:03:51.060 --> 00:03:54.280
  • and like so if I pull my sister's hair, and then,
  • 00:03:54.290 --> 00:03:57.260
  • you know, she stabs me to death, that's it.
  • 00:03:57.270 --> 00:04:01.110
  • I'm going to hell.
  • 00:04:01.120 --> 00:04:02.290
  • But she can confess it and go to heaven.
  • 00:04:03.000 --> 00:04:04.230
  • And anyway, so this was a problem for me because it was
  • 00:04:04.240 --> 00:04:11.090
  • a dialogue about the character and the nature of God.
  • 00:04:11.100 --> 00:04:15.110
  • I mean, to me that sounds like God's a mean, old man looking
  • 00:04:15.120 --> 00:04:18.170
  • to throw me into hell, looking for any reason to get me
  • 00:04:18.180 --> 00:04:21.210
  • to go to hell and one little thing he's gonna get me, huh?
  • 00:04:21.220 --> 00:04:26.000
  • So, I talked to my mom about this and she said,
  • 00:04:26.010 --> 00:04:27.220
  • "That's stupid.
  • 00:04:27.230 --> 00:04:29.150
  • That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard."
  • 00:04:29.160 --> 00:04:31.010
  • She goes, "You're-- no, you're saved by--
  • 00:04:31.020 --> 00:04:32.230
  • you're saved by grace, not by your works."
  • 00:04:32.240 --> 00:04:35.090
  • And you don't have to worry about confessing every sin.
  • 00:04:35.100 --> 00:04:38.080
  • It's good to confess your sins. You should do that.
  • 00:04:38.090 --> 00:04:40.160
  • It's good for you.
  • 00:04:40.170 --> 00:04:42.120
  • It's gonna make you a better person.
  • 00:04:42.130 --> 00:04:43.280
  • It's gonna make you a more Jesus kind of person.
  • 00:04:43.290 --> 00:04:45.230
  • But God is not a cranky, old man looking to throw you into hell.
  • 00:04:45.240 --> 00:04:51.070
  • There is a hell. There is a heaven.
  • 00:04:51.080 --> 00:04:54.270
  • But I guarantee you that there is no one in the whole universe
  • 00:04:54.280 --> 00:04:57.290
  • that wants you to go to heaven and not to hell more than God.
  • 00:04:58.000 --> 00:05:02.130
  • If you can't believe that, how can you trust in God?
  • 00:05:02.140 --> 00:05:06.040
  • How can you?
  • 00:05:06.050 --> 00:05:08.040
  • God is a loving Father, and he wants you--
  • 00:05:08.050 --> 00:05:12.120
  • he wants you to choose him.
  • 00:05:12.130 --> 00:05:14.130
  • He wants you to be in heaven when you die.
  • 00:05:14.140 --> 00:05:16.240
  • And more than that, he wants heaven to open up
  • 00:05:16.250 --> 00:05:19.010
  • to you right now!
  • 00:05:19.020 --> 00:05:22.050
  • God wants you to live a thriving good life.
  • 00:05:22.060 --> 00:05:26.210
  • If it is good, it is from God.
  • 00:05:26.220 --> 00:05:28.260
  • If it is not good, it is not from God.
  • 00:05:28.270 --> 00:05:31.220
  • God gives only what is good.
  • 00:05:31.230 --> 00:05:34.170
  • He does not give what is not good for you.
  • 00:05:34.180 --> 00:05:37.010
  • He loves you!
  • 00:05:37.020 --> 00:05:39.020
  • And if we talk about having faith in the character of
  • 00:05:39.030 --> 00:05:42.250
  • someone who doesn't have character, that's not faith.
  • 00:05:42.260 --> 00:05:47.010
  • Faith in God is not just believing in him,
  • 00:05:47.020 --> 00:05:50.020
  • it's trusting that God's ways are better than my ways,
  • 00:05:50.030 --> 00:05:54.200
  • not only for God but for me.
  • 00:05:54.210 --> 00:05:57.100
  • Look, if my kids--my ways for my children are better
  • 00:05:57.110 --> 00:06:02.000
  • for my kids than my kids' ways for my kids, amen?
  • 00:06:02.010 --> 00:06:05.290
  • Right?
  • 00:06:06.000 --> 00:06:07.210
  • So, God will ask us and command us to do things
  • 00:06:07.220 --> 00:06:09.290
  • we don't wanna do, but part of living by faith is trusting that
  • 00:06:10.000 --> 00:06:16.130
  • that's the best way to be.
  • 00:06:16.140 --> 00:06:19.050
  • Loving your enemies takes a lot of faith.
  • 00:06:19.060 --> 00:06:24.280
  • To love your enemies is trusting that that's the best thing
  • 00:06:24.290 --> 00:06:28.280
  • for me, for God, and for my enemy.
  • 00:06:28.290 --> 00:06:34.090
  • It's the best thing, even though it's a terrible,
  • 00:06:34.100 --> 00:06:37.220
  • horrible thing to do.
  • 00:06:37.230 --> 00:06:39.210
  • Who wants to love their enemy, huh?
  • 00:06:39.220 --> 00:06:41.140
  • But it's amazing and it requires faith.
  • 00:06:41.150 --> 00:06:43.270
  • So, too often we take our own vices, you know,
  • 00:06:43.280 --> 00:06:48.210
  • our resentment, our anger, and we project it on God.
  • 00:06:48.220 --> 00:06:53.140
  • Voltaire said this famous criticism, he said,
  • 00:06:53.150 --> 00:06:57.100
  • "In the beginning God created man in his own image,
  • 00:06:57.110 --> 00:07:01.250
  • and man has been trying to repay the favor ever since."
  • 00:07:01.260 --> 00:07:07.260
  • We try and project all of our stuff onto God.
  • 00:07:07.270 --> 00:07:14.100
  • He's not that way. God is love.
  • 00:07:14.110 --> 00:07:18.010
  • And if you hear anything I say now,
  • 00:07:18.020 --> 00:07:19.280
  • this is one of the most Christian things you can say.
  • 00:07:19.290 --> 00:07:22.070
  • Jesus shows us what God is like.
  • 00:07:22.080 --> 00:07:27.210
  • Jesus does not go around making people sick.
  • 00:07:27.220 --> 00:07:32.140
  • He goes around healing people.
  • 00:07:32.150 --> 00:07:35.210
  • Jesus does not go around telling people they're stupid.
  • 00:07:35.220 --> 00:07:39.220
  • He goes around teaching people. Jesus is a friend of sinners.
  • 00:07:39.230 --> 00:07:46.210
  • Thank you, Jesus. I need a friend like that.
  • 00:07:46.220 --> 00:07:50.180
  • So do you. And you have a friend like that.
  • 00:07:50.190 --> 00:07:52.280
  • You can trust in God that he's on your side,
  • 00:07:52.290 --> 00:07:56.210
  • that he's with you, and you do.
  • 00:07:56.220 --> 00:07:58.180
  • You've put your trust in God,
  • 00:07:58.190 --> 00:08:00.130
  • and it's made all the difference.
  • 00:08:00.140 --> 00:08:02.010
  • Keep faith alive in him.
  • 00:08:02.020 --> 00:08:04.270
  • He will not abandon you because you messed up.
  • 00:08:04.280 --> 00:08:07.220
  • He will not abandon you because you doubt from time to time.
  • 00:08:07.230 --> 00:08:11.200
  • He will not abandon you. He's not looking to trip you up.
  • 00:08:11.210 --> 00:08:14.070
  • He's on your side.
  • 00:08:14.080 --> 00:08:15.290
  • He loves you and trusting in God begins there, that he loves us,
  • 00:08:16.000 --> 00:08:20.000
  • not for what we do, not for what we have,
  • 00:08:20.010 --> 00:08:22.070
  • and not for our reputation, he just loves us because he does.
  • 00:08:22.080 --> 00:08:25.250
  • 'Cause he's our dad. Dads love their kids.
  • 00:08:25.260 --> 00:08:29.020
  • God loves you.
  • 00:08:29.030 --> 00:08:30.250
  • So, put your faith in God and continue to do it.
  • 00:08:30.260 --> 00:08:33.180
  • Put your faith in Jesus Christ. He'll never let you down.
  • 00:08:33.190 --> 00:08:36.210
  • Faith is to trust that in the midst--
  • 00:08:36.220 --> 00:08:39.070
  • and life is hard, I know, we suffer.
  • 00:08:39.080 --> 00:08:41.280
  • Really unfair, horrible things can happen in life,
  • 00:08:41.290 --> 00:08:44.100
  • but faith is the trust that in the end the good
  • 00:08:44.110 --> 00:08:47.100
  • is gonna so far outweigh the bad, it will make sense.
  • 00:08:47.110 --> 00:08:51.050
  • It will! It will.
  • 00:08:51.060 --> 00:08:53.230
  • So, carry on. Keep faith alive.
  • 00:08:53.240 --> 00:08:56.170
  • In Matthew, chapter 8, today's scripture reading we read
  • 00:08:56.180 --> 00:09:01.180
  • this story about--the famous story of the centurion.
  • 00:09:01.190 --> 00:09:04.290
  • And in Jesus' day, centurions were not religious people.
  • 00:09:05.000 --> 00:09:08.280
  • They were not liked by the religious elite.
  • 00:09:08.290 --> 00:09:11.090
  • They were outsiders. They were enemies.
  • 00:09:11.100 --> 00:09:13.120
  • They were pagans. They worshiped pagan gods.
  • 00:09:13.130 --> 00:09:16.100
  • They went to pagan festivals.
  • 00:09:16.110 --> 00:09:18.070
  • They observed pagan sexual rites among other
  • 00:09:18.080 --> 00:09:21.250
  • bizarre things that were very Roman in those days.
  • 00:09:21.260 --> 00:09:24.150
  • So, they were not considered men of faith, huh?
  • 00:09:24.160 --> 00:09:28.220
  • They were not considered godly men.
  • 00:09:28.230 --> 00:09:30.200
  • They didn't consider themselves godly men.
  • 00:09:30.210 --> 00:09:32.120
  • They were practical. They were military men.
  • 00:09:32.130 --> 00:09:34.050
  • And this centurion in particular was hated because,
  • 00:09:34.060 --> 00:09:36.230
  • well, he was a soldier.
  • 00:09:36.240 --> 00:09:39.000
  • And in those days, the Roman empire occupied Israel.
  • 00:09:39.010 --> 00:09:43.190
  • And although Israel was a vassal in the sense that it got to have
  • 00:09:43.200 --> 00:09:47.180
  • its own puppet king and, you know, have its own cultures
  • 00:09:47.190 --> 00:09:49.290
  • and laws, there was always the Roman empire looking over them.
  • 00:09:50.000 --> 00:09:55.050
  • They hated that.
  • 00:09:55.060 --> 00:09:57.020
  • In the temple, there was this--if you look in the
  • 00:09:57.030 --> 00:09:59.080
  • old--the temple was the center of Jewish life and just next
  • 00:09:59.090 --> 00:10:02.090
  • to the temple attached to it was a giant fortress,
  • 00:10:02.100 --> 00:10:06.160
  • higher than the temple called Antonia Fortress.
  • 00:10:06.170 --> 00:10:09.160
  • And there would be a garrison of Roman troops with bows
  • 00:10:09.170 --> 00:10:13.090
  • and arrows ready to fire on the people in the temple
  • 00:10:13.100 --> 00:10:17.010
  • if anybody got out of line.
  • 00:10:17.020 --> 00:10:19.110
  • So, there was this dominant tyrannical rule
  • 00:10:19.120 --> 00:10:22.170
  • of the Roman empire.
  • 00:10:22.180 --> 00:10:24.220
  • So, the Jews hated the Romans. They were outsiders.
  • 00:10:24.230 --> 00:10:29.050
  • Here's this new Jewish rabbi, this hero, this--people were
  • 00:10:29.060 --> 00:10:33.010
  • calling him a prophet and he's going around healing people,
  • 00:10:33.020 --> 00:10:35.150
  • and he's preaching, and he's obviously anointed by God,
  • 00:10:35.160 --> 00:10:39.010
  • and yet there's something really annoying about him
  • 00:10:39.020 --> 00:10:41.150
  • and that's that he's inviting people to the table
  • 00:10:41.160 --> 00:10:43.180
  • that aren't supposed to be there.
  • 00:10:43.190 --> 00:10:45.190
  • It's bugging people.
  • 00:10:45.200 --> 00:10:47.200
  • But here--and in their narrative,
  • 00:10:47.210 --> 00:10:49.170
  • you have to remember that in the Septuagint--
  • 00:10:49.180 --> 00:10:53.060
  • in the apocryphal literature rather,
  • 00:10:53.070 --> 00:10:55.190
  • there is a story that after the Jewish people slay all the
  • 00:10:55.200 --> 00:10:59.100
  • enemies in warfare, they will gather for this massed feast
  • 00:10:59.110 --> 00:11:03.030
  • where the most pure, most holy will eat
  • 00:11:03.040 --> 00:11:05.260
  • of the behemoth and leviathan.
  • 00:11:05.270 --> 00:11:08.030
  • It's this kind of heavenly end of the world image.
  • 00:11:08.040 --> 00:11:10.270
  • So, hold that in your mind as we get into the story.
  • 00:11:10.280 --> 00:11:13.150
  • So, the evil pagans, they'll be dead or cast outside
  • 00:11:13.160 --> 00:11:16.180
  • where there's weeping and gnashing of teeth,
  • 00:11:16.190 --> 00:11:18.200
  • but the religious elite will be at the table.
  • 00:11:18.210 --> 00:11:21.110
  • This centurion comes to Jesus.
  • 00:11:21.120 --> 00:11:24.100
  • And he says, "Lord, my servant is sick, he's paralyzed.
  • 00:11:24.110 --> 00:11:26.220
  • He needs you. I need you to heal him."
  • 00:11:26.230 --> 00:11:28.290
  • Jesus says, "You want me to come to your house and heal him?"
  • 00:11:29.000 --> 00:11:31.230
  • The centurion says, "No, Lord, I'm not worthy
  • 00:11:31.240 --> 00:11:34.170
  • to have you under my roof.
  • 00:11:34.180 --> 00:11:37.140
  • I tell this man go, and he goes.
  • 00:11:37.150 --> 00:11:40.190
  • I tell him to come, and he comes.
  • 00:11:40.200 --> 00:11:42.190
  • And they do it.
  • 00:11:42.200 --> 00:11:44.110
  • Simply say the word and it will be so."
  • 00:11:44.120 --> 00:11:48.280
  • Now, what Jesus says is offensive.
  • 00:11:48.290 --> 00:11:51.020
  • He says not in all of Israel have I seen
  • 00:11:51.030 --> 00:11:56.030
  • such faith like this man.
  • 00:11:56.040 --> 00:11:59.270
  • He says, "I tell you that at the table in the end of time,
  • 00:11:59.280 --> 00:12:04.160
  • many will come--"
  • 00:12:04.170 --> 00:12:06.050
  • That's pagans.
  • 00:12:06.060 --> 00:12:07.230
  • "Many will come from the east and from the west, but many
  • 00:12:07.240 --> 00:12:10.050
  • of those who are children of the kingdom will be cast out
  • 00:12:10.060 --> 00:12:13.100
  • where there's weeping and gnashing of teeth."
  • 00:12:13.110 --> 00:12:15.260
  • What is he saying there?
  • 00:12:15.270 --> 00:12:17.280
  • That, "At my table, those who have faith will sit here and
  • 00:12:17.290 --> 00:12:23.100
  • those who have pride and self righteousness will not."
  • 00:12:23.110 --> 00:12:30.050
  • And he says to this man, "Your servant is well."
  • 00:12:30.060 --> 00:12:32.280
  • And on that day, he was made well.
  • 00:12:32.290 --> 00:12:35.140
  • For the centurion, all he needed was a Word from God.
  • 00:12:35.150 --> 00:12:38.190
  • That's it.
  • 00:12:38.200 --> 00:12:40.110
  • He didn't need him to come to his house.
  • 00:12:40.120 --> 00:12:42.030
  • He didn't need him to lay hands on him.
  • 00:12:42.040 --> 00:12:43.240
  • He just had faith in the Word of God that it was true and that
  • 00:12:43.250 --> 00:12:48.070
  • is central to the Christian belief is that faith
  • 00:12:48.080 --> 00:12:52.100
  • is what saves us, not our works.
  • 00:12:52.110 --> 00:12:55.210
  • We respond in our works to faith but in the end,
  • 00:12:55.220 --> 00:12:59.080
  • it's every day trusting that God is faithful,
  • 00:12:59.090 --> 00:13:02.270
  • God is true, that God will do the saving,
  • 00:13:02.280 --> 00:13:05.080
  • that everything I do in life is in assistance to him,
  • 00:13:05.090 --> 00:13:09.080
  • that he's the one doing the work and I'm along for the ride.
  • 00:13:09.090 --> 00:13:12.170
  • That's faith and that's how you live.
  • 00:13:12.180 --> 00:13:15.190
  • You've lived every moment of your life with faith.
  • 00:13:15.200 --> 00:13:18.140
  • When you went through struggles you said, "I trust in God."
  • 00:13:18.150 --> 00:13:21.280
  • When you went through difficult times,
  • 00:13:21.290 --> 00:13:23.260
  • when you got sick you said, "I trust in God."
  • 00:13:23.270 --> 00:13:26.060
  • When you didn't have the money to pay your bills you said,
  • 00:13:26.070 --> 00:13:28.070
  • "I trust in God."
  • 00:13:28.080 --> 00:13:30.040
  • When you're feeling riddled with shame and guilt you said,
  • 00:13:30.050 --> 00:13:32.030
  • "I trust in God."
  • 00:13:32.040 --> 00:13:34.100
  • Keep trusting in him. God is faithful.
  • 00:13:34.110 --> 00:13:38.030
  • God is faithful.
  • 00:13:38.040 --> 00:13:40.010
  • He loves you and he is on your side.
  • 00:13:40.020 --> 00:13:42.090
  • He's on your side. Believe it.
  • 00:13:42.100 --> 00:13:44.230
  • God is not punishing you. He's not.
  • 00:13:44.240 --> 00:13:50.050
  • He's gonna bless you and he is blessing you.
  • 00:13:50.060 --> 00:13:52.240
  • And blessings are coming for you and heaven is opened up to you.
  • 00:13:52.250 --> 00:13:56.110
  • Just respond with faith, amen? So, it's all about faith.
  • 00:13:56.120 --> 00:14:05.000
  • It's all about you making a choice to trust in God.
  • 00:14:05.010 --> 00:14:09.060
  • No one else can make that decision for you.
  • 00:14:09.070 --> 00:14:11.170
  • You have to choose to follow God.
  • 00:14:11.180 --> 00:14:15.050
  • That your mom can't make it, your dad can't make it,
  • 00:14:15.060 --> 00:14:18.060
  • your brother and sister can't make it, and I can't make it.
  • 00:14:18.070 --> 00:14:20.200
  • Only you can make the decision to trust your life to God.
  • 00:14:20.210 --> 00:14:24.030
  • And most people don't.
  • 00:14:24.040 --> 00:14:26.050
  • Most people trust in the world and in society,
  • 00:14:26.060 --> 00:14:28.250
  • and they put their trust in other people.
  • 00:14:28.260 --> 00:14:30.280
  • But ultimately, you gotta trust in God.
  • 00:14:30.290 --> 00:14:33.040
  • You can't trust anyone, even yourself, with your death,
  • 00:14:33.050 --> 00:14:37.080
  • let alone your life.
  • 00:14:37.090 --> 00:14:40.070
  • Trust in him and things will go better, amen?
  • 00:14:40.080 --> 00:14:44.120
  • That's the narrow road. That's the narrow road.
  • 00:14:44.130 --> 00:14:48.060
  • Jesus talks about this narrow road that leads to life
  • 00:14:48.070 --> 00:14:50.270
  • and only a few find it.
  • 00:14:50.280 --> 00:14:52.290
  • Who walks that road? Those who trust in God.
  • 00:14:53.000 --> 00:14:55.080
  • Those who walk by faith and not by sight, those who believe
  • 00:14:55.090 --> 00:14:59.280
  • with all their heart that God is good, that he is faithful,
  • 00:14:59.290 --> 00:15:02.260
  • and in the end, he will come through.
  • 00:15:02.270 --> 00:15:05.030
  • So, keep faith alive. Faith is trust.
  • 00:15:05.040 --> 00:15:09.160
  • Faith is trust and it's really just that simple.
  • 00:15:09.170 --> 00:15:13.220
  • I think living by faith is most like flying by plane,
  • 00:15:13.230 --> 00:15:16.250
  • and this is something that's personal to me.
  • 00:15:16.260 --> 00:15:18.160
  • I travel all the time and I always am a little,
  • 00:15:18.170 --> 00:15:21.050
  • just a little bit nervous when I fly.
  • 00:15:21.060 --> 00:15:23.210
  • Not a lot, a little, and that's okay.
  • 00:15:23.220 --> 00:15:27.020
  • I'm being vulnerable.
  • 00:15:27.030 --> 00:15:28.270
  • Flying on an airplane is so astronomically safe.
  • 00:15:28.280 --> 00:15:32.050
  • You're actually safer on an airplane in flight
  • 00:15:32.060 --> 00:15:35.100
  • than you are sitting in your house.
  • 00:15:35.110 --> 00:15:37.210
  • According to a study by MIT, you're more likely to be shot
  • 00:15:37.220 --> 00:15:40.250
  • while sitting at your computer from the outside through
  • 00:15:40.260 --> 00:15:43.170
  • the window or wall, than you are to be in
  • 00:15:43.180 --> 00:15:46.090
  • a commercial airplane crash.
  • 00:15:46.100 --> 00:15:50.090
  • Flying is safer than riding on a train.
  • 00:15:50.100 --> 00:15:53.010
  • If you flew every day and rode on a train every day,
  • 00:15:53.020 --> 00:15:56.040
  • you would be more likely to die on a train accident
  • 00:15:56.050 --> 00:15:58.280
  • 17 times than to die in a plane crash.
  • 00:15:58.290 --> 00:16:02.070
  • But let me get you. I'm gonna really get you now.
  • 00:16:02.080 --> 00:16:04.040
  • You ready, choir?
  • 00:16:04.050 --> 00:16:05.230
  • All right, if you drive every day and you fly every day,
  • 00:16:05.240 --> 00:16:09.240
  • you will die in a car accident 500 times
  • 00:16:09.250 --> 00:16:13.120
  • before you die in a plane crash, statistically.
  • 00:16:13.130 --> 00:16:17.250
  • You are so safe on a plane.
  • 00:16:17.260 --> 00:16:21.120
  • When you get on a plane, all that information
  • 00:16:21.130 --> 00:16:24.110
  • goes out the window.
  • 00:16:24.120 --> 00:16:26.150
  • It just doesn't matter. I don't care.
  • 00:16:26.160 --> 00:16:28.080
  • It doesn't matter.
  • 00:16:28.090 --> 00:16:30.030
  • I am flying through the sky on a giant metal tube
  • 00:16:30.040 --> 00:16:33.180
  • going several hundred miles an hour and I don't even know
  • 00:16:33.190 --> 00:16:36.060
  • what's happening here.
  • 00:16:36.070 --> 00:16:37.260
  • Like, right?
  • 00:16:37.270 --> 00:16:39.190
  • Like--I'll take my peanuts.
  • 00:16:39.200 --> 00:16:43.030
  • So, you're rooted in knowledge.
  • 00:16:43.040 --> 00:16:44.260
  • You get on the plane 'cause you know it's safe,
  • 00:16:44.270 --> 00:16:47.110
  • but you're still nervous.
  • 00:16:47.120 --> 00:16:49.210
  • But you could get on a plane and you can be nervous.
  • 00:16:49.220 --> 00:16:52.130
  • In fact, you can be that gal or that guy that's like freaking
  • 00:16:52.140 --> 00:16:56.000
  • out, and drinking vodka, and doing whatever you can
  • 00:16:56.010 --> 00:16:58.070
  • to make it to the other side.
  • 00:16:58.080 --> 00:17:00.120
  • Don't drink vodka.
  • 00:17:00.130 --> 00:17:02.200
  • But you can be that guy in your spiritual life and still have
  • 00:17:02.210 --> 00:17:06.210
  • faith as long as you get on a plane.
  • 00:17:06.220 --> 00:17:10.250
  • Do you hear me?
  • 00:17:10.260 --> 00:17:12.250
  • Faith is about getting on a plane.
  • 00:17:12.260 --> 00:17:14.290
  • Faith's about sitting in the chair.
  • 00:17:15.000 --> 00:17:17.260
  • Faith is trusting God in what you do.
  • 00:17:17.270 --> 00:17:19.280
  • Faith is released. It's not had, it's released.
  • 00:17:19.290 --> 00:17:22.220
  • It's what it makes you do. It's courage.
  • 00:17:22.230 --> 00:17:26.120
  • Courage is doing what you're scared of but still doing it.
  • 00:17:26.130 --> 00:17:32.110
  • Faith doesn't mean you're not scared.
  • 00:17:32.120 --> 00:17:34.150
  • Faith means you trust God enough to move forward, amen?
  • 00:17:34.160 --> 00:17:39.110
  • And you have faith and I'm proud of you.
  • 00:17:39.120 --> 00:17:41.140
  • I'm so proud of you that through it all you've continued to be
  • 00:17:41.150 --> 00:17:45.100
  • the person who says, "Above all I trust God and not this world.
  • 00:17:45.110 --> 00:17:49.260
  • I trust in God." And I'm proud of you.
  • 00:17:49.270 --> 00:17:52.140
  • Keep trusting in him. Keep your faith alive.
  • 00:17:52.150 --> 00:17:54.290
  • You can trust God. He is on your side.
  • 00:17:55.000 --> 00:17:58.200
  • So, something good's gonna happen.
  • 00:17:58.210 --> 00:18:00.140
  • Everybody say that to me.
  • 00:18:00.150 --> 00:18:02.040
  • "Something good's gonna happen."
  • 00:18:02.050 --> 00:18:03.230
  • Something good is gonna happen.
  • 00:18:03.240 --> 00:18:05.230
  • Something good's gonna happen, right?
  • 00:18:05.240 --> 00:18:08.040
  • It's something good.
  • 00:18:08.050 --> 00:18:09.260
  • And faith doesn't mean you know what the good thing is but, man,
  • 00:18:09.270 --> 00:18:11.180
  • when it comes, that's gonna be--you're gonna know.
  • 00:18:11.190 --> 00:18:13.130
  • You're gonna be like, "Pastor Bobby said
  • 00:18:13.140 --> 00:18:15.070
  • something good was going to happen
  • 00:18:15.080 --> 00:18:16.260
  • and, man, he was right!
  • 00:18:16.270 --> 00:18:18.190
  • But I knew he was right because I have faith."
  • 00:18:18.200 --> 00:18:20.290
  • And you do.
  • 00:18:21.000 --> 00:18:22.220
  • So, three things, number one, pray with faith,
  • 00:18:22.230 --> 00:18:26.180
  • not with sympathy.
  • 00:18:26.190 --> 00:18:29.110
  • Pray with faith not with sympathy.
  • 00:18:29.120 --> 00:18:32.160
  • I remember when Hannah and I, we were with a small gathering
  • 00:18:32.170 --> 00:18:36.160
  • of pastors in Houston, and Dottie Osteen, this beautiful
  • 00:18:36.170 --> 00:18:42.260
  • but older, little woman-- Joel Osteen's mom,
  • 00:18:42.270 --> 00:18:47.200
  • was praying for us pastors.
  • 00:18:47.210 --> 00:18:50.040
  • And she prayed different than most Christians pray.
  • 00:18:50.050 --> 00:18:53.230
  • When she prayed it was like she was wrestling with God,
  • 00:18:53.240 --> 00:18:56.160
  • like she was warring with God.
  • 00:18:56.170 --> 00:18:58.150
  • So, she's praying, and she's like, "Come on, God!
  • 00:18:58.160 --> 00:19:01.240
  • Come on! You've gotta heal Cohen!
  • 00:19:01.250 --> 00:19:04.130
  • How's Hannah gonna do your work if Cohen is sick all the time!
  • 00:19:04.140 --> 00:19:07.280
  • You've got to heal him!"
  • 00:19:07.290 --> 00:19:10.010
  • And she'd like pace around, like she's at--she's not done yet.
  • 00:19:10.020 --> 00:19:13.030
  • She's like wait, she's like, "Come on, God!
  • 00:19:13.040 --> 00:19:15.100
  • You gotta--you gotta heal him!"
  • 00:19:15.110 --> 00:19:18.060
  • When she prayed, it was as though she actually believed God
  • 00:19:18.070 --> 00:19:21.150
  • would hear her prayer and do it.
  • 00:19:21.160 --> 00:19:24.180
  • It wasn't like, "Oh Lord, we pray in thine holy name."
  • 00:19:24.190 --> 00:19:30.020
  • No, she was like "Hey, hey, hey!"
  • 00:19:30.030 --> 00:19:36.010
  • That's somebody who's praying with faith, not with sympathy.
  • 00:19:38.040 --> 00:19:40.210
  • That's someone who was told that she was gonna die of cancer
  • 00:19:40.220 --> 00:19:45.120
  • in a month and received a miracle from God and today,
  • 00:19:45.130 --> 00:19:50.170
  • 25 years later, is walking in complete health.
  • 00:19:50.180 --> 00:19:54.170
  • So, hey look, I know people with big faith still die
  • 00:19:54.180 --> 00:20:01.170
  • of cancer sometimes, but that's 'cause
  • 00:20:01.180 --> 00:20:03.200
  • something better's coming.
  • 00:20:03.210 --> 00:20:05.130
  • And I just believe that. I just believe it.
  • 00:20:05.140 --> 00:20:07.090
  • So, when you pray, pray with faith.
  • 00:20:07.100 --> 00:20:09.270
  • Believe that God will hear your prayer and that he'll do it,
  • 00:20:09.280 --> 00:20:13.290
  • that he can, and he will.
  • 00:20:14.000 --> 00:20:16.130
  • Pray with faith. And you do, you pray with faith.
  • 00:20:16.140 --> 00:20:19.000
  • You don't pray like religious folks.
  • 00:20:19.010 --> 00:20:20.280
  • You pray like a girl or a guy praying to his or her dad 'cause
  • 00:20:20.290 --> 00:20:24.210
  • that's what you're doing.
  • 00:20:24.220 --> 00:20:26.210
  • You're asking your dad for help.
  • 00:20:26.220 --> 00:20:28.120
  • And he's a good dad, a loving dad, a present dad,
  • 00:20:28.130 --> 00:20:30.280
  • a dad who's never abandoned you.
  • 00:20:30.290 --> 00:20:32.220
  • He's your loving Father. Pray to him like that.
  • 00:20:32.230 --> 00:20:36.150
  • Okay, number two, when you wait, wait with faith, not with worry.
  • 00:20:36.160 --> 00:20:42.260
  • Wait with faith, not worry.
  • 00:20:42.270 --> 00:20:45.010
  • Faith is so much about walking day by day
  • 00:20:45.020 --> 00:20:47.010
  • than it is about leaping.
  • 00:20:47.020 --> 00:20:49.010
  • Faith is about every day just trusting its gonna be alright.
  • 00:20:49.020 --> 00:20:52.180
  • Faith means I don't see--I don't see the future but God does
  • 00:20:52.190 --> 00:20:55.190
  • and its good and I trust in him.
  • 00:20:55.200 --> 00:20:57.220
  • And that's what you do.
  • 00:20:57.230 --> 00:20:59.170
  • You walk and you wait with faith.
  • 00:20:59.180 --> 00:21:01.080
  • I'm so proud of you that in the suffering and the challenges
  • 00:21:01.090 --> 00:21:04.030
  • of life, you wait with faith because you know God
  • 00:21:04.040 --> 00:21:07.260
  • will come through because he always does, and you can.
  • 00:21:07.270 --> 00:21:11.150
  • And number three, when you act, act with faith,
  • 00:21:11.160 --> 00:21:15.180
  • not with second-guessing.
  • 00:21:15.190 --> 00:21:18.140
  • Look, I--this is one I really believe in big time.
  • 00:21:18.150 --> 00:21:22.000
  • If God has asked you to do something, do it.
  • 00:21:22.010 --> 00:21:25.200
  • If God has asked you to do something--if he's asked you
  • 00:21:25.210 --> 00:21:28.020
  • to put your hand to the plow, don't look back, just do it.
  • 00:21:28.030 --> 00:21:31.270
  • I just believe so much that faith pleases God
  • 00:21:31.280 --> 00:21:35.080
  • that even when we accidentally put our faith
  • 00:21:35.090 --> 00:21:37.060
  • in the wrong thing but still act with faith,
  • 00:21:37.070 --> 00:21:39.150
  • that he's still in a way pleased,
  • 00:21:39.160 --> 00:21:41.290
  • because I don't think the biggest problem
  • 00:21:42.000 --> 00:21:44.080
  • facing the church today is people acting with boldness
  • 00:21:44.090 --> 00:21:47.200
  • for something they're passionate about.
  • 00:21:47.210 --> 00:21:50.050
  • The biggest challenge to the church today is people wallowing
  • 00:21:50.060 --> 00:21:52.280
  • in indecision and never acting.
  • 00:21:52.290 --> 00:21:55.240
  • But that's a decision in and of itself.
  • 00:21:55.250 --> 00:21:58.150
  • When you second-guess, when you move towards a dream
  • 00:21:58.160 --> 00:22:00.290
  • that God has given you in your heart,
  • 00:22:01.000 --> 00:22:02.260
  • do it with all your heart.
  • 00:22:02.270 --> 00:22:04.100
  • Do it with all your heart. And don't give up.
  • 00:22:04.110 --> 00:22:06.230
  • And go towards that goal and don't second-guess yourself.
  • 00:22:06.240 --> 00:22:11.110
  • Once you've made a decision and you believe it's from God,
  • 00:22:11.120 --> 00:22:13.100
  • go for it.
  • 00:22:13.110 --> 00:22:15.000
  • And eventually, if it's not where you're supposed to go,
  • 00:22:15.010 --> 00:22:17.070
  • God will make it crystal clear.
  • 00:22:17.080 --> 00:22:19.000
  • You won't have to guess, amen? Act with boldness.
  • 00:22:19.010 --> 00:22:23.000
  • Look, faith pleases God.
  • 00:22:23.010 --> 00:22:26.070
  • And people admire boldness and enthusiasm anyway.
  • 00:22:26.080 --> 00:22:28.230
  • I can tell you from experience, you can make the rest up
  • 00:22:28.240 --> 00:22:31.110
  • at the end if you mess up.
  • 00:22:31.120 --> 00:22:33.150
  • I've done it plenty of times.
  • 00:22:33.160 --> 00:22:35.160
  • So, when you pray, pray with faith not with sympathy.
  • 00:22:35.170 --> 00:22:39.260
  • When you wait, wait with faith not with worry.
  • 00:22:39.270 --> 00:22:43.090
  • And when you act, act with faith, with boldness,
  • 00:22:43.100 --> 00:22:46.060
  • not with second-guessing yourself all the time, amen?
  • 00:22:46.070 --> 00:22:50.160
  • God really does speak to you.
  • 00:22:50.170 --> 00:22:52.190
  • God really does speak to you through knowledge.
  • 00:22:52.200 --> 00:22:54.290
  • He really does put ideas in your heart.
  • 00:22:55.000 --> 00:22:57.070
  • When you're a person of faith, you've trusted your life to God
  • 00:22:57.080 --> 00:22:59.270
  • and that is a very, very good thing, amen?
  • 00:22:59.280 --> 00:23:04.140
  • I can't let you leave here without giving you
  • 00:23:04.150 --> 00:23:06.260
  • the opportunity to connect with God.
  • 00:23:06.270 --> 00:23:09.100
  • Today is a great day to become a Christian.
  • 00:23:09.110 --> 00:23:12.230
  • In a moment, I'm gonna ask you to come down
  • 00:23:12.240 --> 00:23:14.220
  • so I can pray with you to receive Jesus Christ
  • 00:23:14.230 --> 00:23:16.080
  • as your Savior.
  • 00:23:16.090 --> 00:23:17.260
  • Are you at peace with God?
  • 00:23:17.270 --> 00:23:22.100
  • If you died today, do you know where you'd spend eternity?
  • 00:23:22.110 --> 00:23:28.150
  • Do you come today and you've completely lost your faith,
  • 00:23:28.160 --> 00:23:31.150
  • or maybe and more like you--
  • 00:23:31.160 --> 00:23:33.120
  • maybe you've been watching on television
  • 00:23:33.130 --> 00:23:35.120
  • or you just visiting today and you need to make
  • 00:23:35.130 --> 00:23:38.010
  • a decision to follow Christ.
  • 00:23:38.020 --> 00:23:40.180
  • I'm gonna invite you today to come forward
  • 00:23:40.190 --> 00:23:42.150
  • and let me pray with you.
  • 00:23:42.160 --> 00:23:44.160
  • I'm gonna ask that whoever you are,
  • 00:23:44.170 --> 00:23:46.140
  • I want you to know that no--
  • 00:23:46.150 --> 00:23:48.240
  • nobody here, if you were to come down here,
  • 00:23:48.250 --> 00:23:51.120
  • would blame you or judge you.
  • 00:23:51.130 --> 00:23:54.010
  • All we would do is cheer with every angel in heaven
  • 00:23:54.020 --> 00:23:57.070
  • to know that your name is in the Lamb's Book of Life.
  • 00:23:57.080 --> 00:24:01.060
  • So this morning, I'm not gonna take a long time.
  • 00:24:01.070 --> 00:24:03.040
  • Just give me 2 minutes.
  • 00:24:03.050 --> 00:24:05.080
  • If wherever you are, every head up, everybody looking around,
  • 00:24:05.090 --> 00:24:08.190
  • looking at your neighbor, looking at behind you to see
  • 00:24:08.200 --> 00:24:10.280
  • if there's somebody.
  • 00:24:10.290 --> 00:24:12.230
  • Look, if you're gonna do something great for God,
  • 00:24:12.240 --> 00:24:14.210
  • it begins with courage.
  • 00:24:14.220 --> 00:24:17.170
  • Every journey with God begins with an act of courage.
  • 00:24:17.180 --> 00:24:19.270
  • Doing something that's-- scares ya.
  • 00:24:19.280 --> 00:24:22.260
  • So, today if you wanna receive Jesus Christ as your Savior
  • 00:24:22.270 --> 00:24:25.140
  • and become a Christian, I want you to stand right where you are
  • 00:24:25.150 --> 00:24:27.290
  • and come down here and let me give you a big hug
  • 00:24:28.000 --> 00:24:29.190
  • and pray for you.
  • 00:24:29.200 --> 00:24:31.130
  • [congregation applauding]
  • 00:24:31.140 --> 00:24:39.090
  • Wherever you are, come on down.
  • 00:24:39.100 --> 00:24:41.010
  • Stay right here. Stay here.
  • 00:24:41.020 --> 00:24:42.250
  • Stay here just as you are.
  • 00:24:42.260 --> 00:24:44.200
  • Just stand where you are, come down.
  • 00:24:44.210 --> 00:24:46.140
  • Stand up for God.
  • 00:24:46.150 --> 00:24:50.260
  • Anyone, just come on down.
  • 00:24:50.270 --> 00:24:55.020
  • Give it just a few more minutes.
  • 00:24:55.030 --> 00:24:56.270
  • If you want to receive Christ, just stand up and come down.
  • 00:24:56.280 --> 00:24:58.260
  • I'll give you a big old hug and we'll pray together.
  • 00:24:58.270 --> 00:25:01.090
  • All right guys, I'm gonna pray with you.
  • 00:25:01.100 --> 00:25:03.030
  • Would you just come around this way?
  • 00:25:03.040 --> 00:25:05.130
  • And everyone, if you're here, when I became a Christian,
  • 00:25:05.140 --> 00:25:07.090
  • you know, there was somebody giving an altar call like this
  • 00:25:07.100 --> 00:25:09.140
  • and I just sat in my seat, but that was still a time
  • 00:25:09.150 --> 00:25:12.080
  • when my life was changed.
  • 00:25:12.090 --> 00:25:14.080
  • So, let's all pray this together.
  • 00:25:14.090 --> 00:25:15.240
  • Friends, would you hold your hands out like this
  • 00:25:15.250 --> 00:25:17.180
  • as a sign of receiving and repeat after me?
  • 00:25:17.190 --> 00:25:20.270
  • Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.
  • 00:25:20.280 --> 00:25:28.090
  • I am a new creation in you. I'm the beloved of God.
  • 00:25:28.100 --> 00:25:34.280
  • I'm called, I'm favored, I'm forgiven, I'm chosen,
  • 00:25:34.290 --> 00:25:42.200
  • and I trust you, God.
  • 00:25:42.210 --> 00:25:44.250
  • Fill me with your Holy Spirit. And in Jesus' name, amen.
  • 00:25:44.260 --> 00:25:51.150
  • Thank you, guys. Just go to this room.
  • 00:25:51.160 --> 00:25:53.190
  • We're gonna give you a little book and pray with you.
  • 00:25:53.200 --> 00:25:56.190
  • [congregation applauding]
  • 00:25:56.200 --> 00:26:00.260
  • male announcer: God is moving in miraculous ways
  • 00:26:00.270 --> 00:26:02.280
  • through "Hour of Power."
  • 00:26:02.290 --> 00:26:04.170
  • Thanks to our faithful eagle partners
  • 00:26:04.180 --> 00:26:06.170

  • 00:26:06.180 --> 00:26:09.210
  • we're able to continue sharing God's love
  • 00:26:09.220 --> 00:26:11.270
  • and dignity with the world.
  • 00:26:11.280 --> 00:26:13.260
  • Please prayerfully consider becoming an eagle partner today
  • 00:26:13.270 --> 00:26:17.010

  • This leather-bound 52-week devotional book features
  • 00:26:26.170 --> 00:26:29.200
  • inspirational Scripture and teachings from Bobby
  • 00:26:29.210 --> 00:26:32.050
