  • 00:00:00.170 --> 00:00:10.170
  • Brian Houston: All right, we're gonna talk about
  • 00:00:15.170 --> 00:00:16.210
  • the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:00:16.220 --> 00:00:17.240
  • So thank God this is a conference that's all about
  • 00:00:17.250 --> 00:00:19.190
  • championing the cause of local churches everywhere,
  • 00:00:19.200 --> 00:00:23.210
  • and we need the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:00:23.220 --> 00:00:27.270
  • We need the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:00:28.170 --> 00:00:31.060
  • Where would we be without the Holy Spirit?
  • 00:00:31.070 --> 00:00:35.170
  • I wanna know the power of the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:00:35.180 --> 00:00:38.050
  • I wanna know the person of the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:00:38.060 --> 00:00:42.070
  • I get to travel.
  • 00:00:42.080 --> 00:00:43.100
  • I travel all around the world, as many of you know
  • 00:00:43.110 --> 00:00:46.080
  • and like others here do, and I know so many pastors.
  • 00:00:46.090 --> 00:00:51.240
  • I know pastors of some of the biggest and most well-known
  • 00:00:51.250 --> 00:00:53.290
  • churches on the globe, some of the most significant ministries.
  • 00:00:54.000 --> 00:00:57.170
  • I know pastors of small, seemingly insignificant, not to
  • 00:00:57.180 --> 00:01:01.010
  • God, but maybe unknown churches, and I love pastors.
  • 00:01:01.020 --> 00:01:06.170
  • I love pastors.
  • 00:01:06.180 --> 00:01:08.180
  • I grew up a pastor's kid.
  • 00:01:08.190 --> 00:01:10.080
  • I am a pastor.
  • 00:01:10.090 --> 00:01:11.190
  • I've got kids who are pastors.
  • 00:01:11.200 --> 00:01:13.090
  • I love pastors.
  • 00:01:13.100 --> 00:01:15.270
  • And do you know, an interesting thing I've noticed is sometimes,
  • 00:01:15.280 --> 00:01:22.020
  • off the platform, you think pastors, and well, I'll talk
  • 00:01:22.030 --> 00:01:26.040
  • about Jentezen Franklin, for example.
  • 00:01:26.050 --> 00:01:29.060
  • My experience of Jentezen Franklin when I spend time with
  • 00:01:29.070 --> 00:01:31.220
  • him off the platform, he's Southern.
  • 00:01:31.230 --> 00:01:34.240
  • He's a gentleman, he's polite.
  • 00:01:34.250 --> 00:01:36.290
  • I would call him almost shy.
  • 00:01:37.000 --> 00:01:41.160
  • And yet, he gets on the platform, and the guy,
  • 00:01:41.170 --> 00:01:44.170
  • it's almost like he becomes a different person, powerful, got
  • 00:01:44.180 --> 00:01:49.100
  • authority, just can break a huge arena like this open with the
  • 00:01:49.110 --> 00:01:55.160
  • power of God.
  • 00:01:55.170 --> 00:01:57.200
  • I love to see what the Holy Spirit can do on a person's life
  • 00:01:57.210 --> 00:02:02.080
  • because sometimes he makes us different people.
  • 00:02:02.090 --> 00:02:07.230
  • Not in the sense of hypocrisy and being one thing down there
  • 00:02:07.240 --> 00:02:11.030
  • and another thing up here, but in terms of authority and power
  • 00:02:11.040 --> 00:02:15.130
  • and anointing, and we need the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:02:15.140 --> 00:02:19.180
  • As a pastor, I know I need the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:02:19.190 --> 00:02:23.250
  • We all, in whatever it is God's called us to do, we need the
  • 00:02:23.260 --> 00:02:27.160
  • Holy Spirit.
  • 00:02:27.170 --> 00:02:30.050
  • Israel had judges, but they wanted a king.
  • 00:02:30.060 --> 00:02:34.280
  • And ultimately, God gave them their desire, and Samuel
  • 00:02:34.290 --> 00:02:38.270
  • anointed Saul Israel's first king.
  • 00:02:38.280 --> 00:02:42.190
  • And even though it ended badly with Saul, it started so well.
  • 00:02:42.200 --> 00:02:46.290
  • And this is what happens when the priest Samuel anoints Saul.
  • 00:02:47.000 --> 00:02:50.290
  • In 1 Samuel 10, verse 6, it says: "The Spirit of the Lord,"
  • 00:02:51.000 --> 00:02:54.200
  • that's who we're talking about.
  • 00:02:54.210 --> 00:02:56.040
  • "The Spirit of the Lord will come upon you, and you will
  • 00:02:56.050 --> 00:02:58.190
  • prophesy with them and be turned into another man," become
  • 00:02:58.200 --> 00:03:04.130
  • someone different, "turned into another man."
  • 00:03:04.140 --> 00:03:08.220
  • And in verse 9: "It was, when he had turned his back to go from
  • 00:03:08.230 --> 00:03:12.030
  • Samuel, that God gave him another heart;" turned him into
  • 00:03:12.040 --> 00:03:16.260
  • another man, "God gave him another heart; and all those
  • 00:03:16.270 --> 00:03:21.070
  • signs came to pass that day."
  • 00:03:21.080 --> 00:03:24.170
  • I went to Bible college 45 years ago, 45 years ago.
  • 00:03:24.180 --> 00:03:29.050
  • I'm that guy now talks, is like, "45 years ago."
  • 00:03:29.060 --> 00:03:34.020
  • That's me now.
  • 00:03:34.030 --> 00:03:35.110
  • It used to be all the old guys, but now it's us young guys who
  • 00:03:35.120 --> 00:03:37.250
  • are, "45 years ago, I started Bible college."
  • 00:03:37.260 --> 00:03:42.200
  • Well, I got asked to speak at the chapel.
  • 00:03:42.210 --> 00:03:47.130
  • Honestly, there was 50, probably 60 students, but I had to speak
  • 00:03:47.140 --> 00:03:52.080
  • at chapel for 20 minutes.
  • 00:03:52.090 --> 00:03:53.150
  • And, you know, I got so worked up and so nervous and so shy
  • 00:03:53.160 --> 00:03:57.190
  • that when the day came, I literally got in my car, drove
  • 00:03:57.200 --> 00:04:01.250
  • in the opposite direction because I couldn't face it, and
  • 00:04:01.260 --> 00:04:06.010
  • pretend that I forgot.
  • 00:04:06.020 --> 00:04:08.140
  • Well, I'm still that person, same DNA, same blood running
  • 00:04:08.150 --> 00:04:12.270
  • through my veins, but something's changed.
  • 00:04:12.280 --> 00:04:16.280
  • I believe God's turned me into another man.
  • 00:04:16.290 --> 00:04:20.080
  • We all need the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:04:20.090 --> 00:04:21.240
  • We all need the strength of the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:04:21.250 --> 00:04:23.280
  • And it's a presumptuous person who believes they can do
  • 00:04:23.290 --> 00:04:26.070
  • whatever it is God's called them to do without the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:04:26.080 --> 00:04:31.100
  • We need his strength.
  • 00:04:31.110 --> 00:04:33.140
  • In 2 Corinthians chapter 12, verse 9, the Apostle Paul,
  • 00:04:33.150 --> 00:04:37.120
  • quoting Jesus, said this: "'My grace is sufficient for you, and
  • 00:04:37.130 --> 00:04:42.060
  • my strength,'" he talked about strength, "my strength is made
  • 00:04:42.070 --> 00:04:46.070
  • perfect in your weakness."
  • 00:04:46.080 --> 00:04:48.150
  • In other words, "Your weakness is the perfect match for my
  • 00:04:48.160 --> 00:04:52.110
  • strength.
  • 00:04:52.120 --> 00:04:54.020
  • I love the fact that my insecurities, my weakness, my
  • 00:04:54.030 --> 00:04:57.100
  • inability, my humanness is the perfect match for God's
  • 00:04:57.110 --> 00:05:02.160
  • strength, and so is yours, the perfect match.
  • 00:05:02.170 --> 00:05:07.140
  • And then, in verse 10, again, Paul talks about strength.
  • 00:05:07.150 --> 00:05:11.160
  • He said: "Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in
  • 00:05:11.170 --> 00:05:13.290
  • reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for
  • 00:05:14.000 --> 00:05:17.000
  • Christ's sake.
  • 00:05:17.010 --> 00:05:18.090
  • For when I am weak, then I am strong."
  • 00:05:18.100 --> 00:05:22.020
  • That's interesting, Paul says, "But when I am weak,
  • 00:05:22.030 --> 00:05:24.150
  • then I am strong."
  • 00:05:24.160 --> 00:05:26.030
  • So Jesus says, "My strength is made perfect in your weakness."
  • 00:05:26.040 --> 00:05:30.050
  • Paul says, "When I'm weak, I am strong."
  • 00:05:30.060 --> 00:05:33.260
  • But, you know, the two times strength is mentioned there,
  • 00:05:33.270 --> 00:05:36.210
  • it's different Greek words.
  • 00:05:36.220 --> 00:05:38.280
  • And "dunamis" is one of the words for the Holy Spirit, it's
  • 00:05:38.290 --> 00:05:41.200
  • "explosive power."
  • 00:05:41.210 --> 00:05:43.290
  • And so, when Jesus says, "My strength is made perfect in your
  • 00:05:44.000 --> 00:05:47.090
  • weakness," it's "dynamis," like "dunamis" with a Y, "dynamis,"
  • 00:05:47.100 --> 00:05:53.110
  • and it's talking about "inherent power," God's inherent power.
  • 00:05:53.120 --> 00:05:57.050
  • Strength is who he is.
  • 00:05:57.060 --> 00:05:58.260
  • He is strong.
  • 00:05:58.270 --> 00:06:01.020
  • But when Paul says, "When I am weak, then I am strong," it's a
  • 00:06:01.030 --> 00:06:05.200
  • different word, similar, it's "dynatos."
  • 00:06:05.210 --> 00:06:09.070
  • But this time, it's not talking about inherent strength, Paul's
  • 00:06:09.080 --> 00:06:12.050
  • own strength.
  • 00:06:12.060 --> 00:06:13.030
  • It's talking about "imparted strength."
  • 00:06:13.040 --> 00:06:15.270
  • And that's what the Holy Spirit does for us.
  • 00:06:15.280 --> 00:06:18.140
  • The Holy Spirit imparts strength into us.
  • 00:06:18.150 --> 00:06:23.000
  • In the Old Testament, various words translated "strong": "to
  • 00:06:23.010 --> 00:06:26.010
  • be strengthened, sustained, resolute, firm, to prevail, to
  • 00:06:26.020 --> 00:06:30.240
  • grow in strength, to become powerful, to arise, to be bold,
  • 00:06:30.250 --> 00:06:35.250
  • alert, brave, secure, to strengthen, to make strong."
  • 00:06:35.260 --> 00:06:41.190
  • And in the New Testament, some of the words for "strong" or
  • 00:06:41.200 --> 00:06:45.280
  • "strength" are: "mighty, powerful, able," he makes us
  • 00:06:45.290 --> 00:06:51.210
  • able, "strong."
  • 00:06:51.220 --> 00:06:56.000
  • You need the strength of the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:06:56.010 --> 00:06:58.230
  • Pastors, maybe you're struggling and you're under the weight of
  • 00:06:58.240 --> 00:07:01.240
  • it all.
  • 00:07:01.250 --> 00:07:03.150
  • You need the strength of the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:07:03.160 --> 00:07:07.020
  • In 2017, so many vexing things are around and about us.
  • 00:07:07.030 --> 00:07:10.160
  • More than ever, we need the strength of the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:07:10.170 --> 00:07:17.030
  • And thank God for the Holy Spirit and the way the Holy
  • 00:07:17.040 --> 00:07:19.280
  • Spirit works in our lives, especially when we are weak.
  • 00:07:19.290 --> 00:07:24.190
  • Romans 8:26: "Likewise the Spirit also helps in our
  • 00:07:24.200 --> 00:07:29.020
  • weaknesses."
  • 00:07:29.030 --> 00:07:30.210
  • You know, Jesus himself, when he walked on earth, he knew he
  • 00:07:30.220 --> 00:07:33.220
  • needed the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:07:33.230 --> 00:07:36.000
  • And if Jesus needed the Holy Spirit, how much more do you and
  • 00:07:36.010 --> 00:07:38.260
  • I need the Holy Spirit?
  • 00:07:38.270 --> 00:07:41.170
  • And Jesus, of course, when he was baptized in water in Luke
  • 00:07:41.180 --> 00:07:45.030
  • chapter 3, he comes up from the water and this is what the
  • 00:07:45.040 --> 00:07:50.090
  • verses tell us, verse 22, Luke chapter 3: "The Holy Spirit
  • 00:07:50.100 --> 00:07:54.170
  • descended in bodily form like a dove upon him."
  • 00:07:54.180 --> 00:07:58.130
  • So the Holy Spirit, in the form of a dove, came upon him in this
  • 00:07:58.140 --> 00:08:04.190
  • verse.
  • 00:08:04.200 --> 00:08:05.270
  • "And a voice came from heaven which said, 'You are my beloved
  • 00:08:05.280 --> 00:08:08.060
  • Son; in you I am well pleased.'"
  • 00:08:08.070 --> 00:08:11.220
  • So the Holy Spirit is on him, but then it says, just moving on
  • 00:08:11.230 --> 00:08:15.280
  • a few verses in chapter 4, verse 1 and 2 that:
  • 00:08:15.290 --> 00:08:18.270
  • "Jesus then being filled with the Holy Spirit,
  • 00:08:18.280 --> 00:08:21.260
  • returned from the Jordan."
  • 00:08:21.270 --> 00:08:23.140
  • So, not only did the Holy Spirit come on him, but the Holy Spirit
  • 00:08:23.150 --> 00:08:27.160
  • was in him.
  • 00:08:27.170 --> 00:08:29.100
  • He was filled with the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:08:29.110 --> 00:08:35.030
  • Brian: I don't know that everybody fully understands just
  • 00:08:35.040 --> 00:08:37.060
  • how to close to us the Holy Spirit actually is.
  • 00:08:37.070 --> 00:08:41.230
  • Imagine if we really believed the Holy Spirit is here.
  • 00:08:41.240 --> 00:08:45.070
  • I wonder if our conversations would be different.
  • 00:08:45.080 --> 00:08:47.280
  • I wonder if we'd lift our life, or live our lives
  • 00:08:47.290 --> 00:08:50.050
  • a little different.
  • 00:08:50.060 --> 00:08:52.060
  • with the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:08:57.220 --> 00:08:59.120
  • See, for this conference, I believe the Holy Spirit
  • 00:08:59.130 --> 00:09:01.260
  • is on this conference.
  • 00:09:01.270 --> 00:09:04.070
  • And because you are the temple of the Holy Spirit, you bring
  • 00:09:04.080 --> 00:09:06.220
  • him in here, and so we know the Holy Spirit is in this
  • 00:09:06.230 --> 00:09:10.100
  • conference.
  • 00:09:10.110 --> 00:09:12.170
  • But not only was the Holy Spirit on him and in him, but reading
  • 00:09:12.180 --> 00:09:16.020
  • on there in those verses, verse 1 and 2, it says:
  • 00:09:16.030 --> 00:09:20.080
  • "He returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit
  • 00:09:20.090 --> 00:09:23.290
  • into the wilderness, being tempted for forty days
  • 00:09:24.000 --> 00:09:25.280
  • by the devil.
  • 00:09:25.290 --> 00:09:26.270
  • And in those days he ate nothing.
  • 00:09:26.280 --> 00:09:29.050
  • And afterward, when they had ended, he was hungry."
  • 00:09:29.060 --> 00:09:33.060
  • Really, 40 days, he's hungry?
  • 00:09:33.070 --> 00:09:35.270
  • Big shock, big surprise.
  • 00:09:35.280 --> 00:09:40.140
  • Hey, Holy Spirit came on him.
  • 00:09:40.150 --> 00:09:44.260
  • Holy Spirit filled him.
  • 00:09:44.270 --> 00:09:47.020
  • And now the Holy Spirit led him.
  • 00:09:47.030 --> 00:09:49.230
  • And then, it moves on from there and says, "The Holy Spirit
  • 00:09:49.240 --> 00:09:52.130
  • empowered him."
  • 00:09:52.140 --> 00:09:54.100
  • In verse 14: "Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to
  • 00:09:54.110 --> 00:09:57.290
  • Galilee," where his Galilean ministry was about to start.
  • 00:09:58.000 --> 00:10:02.140
  • So, now, the Holy Spirit's on him, in him, is leading him, and
  • 00:10:02.150 --> 00:10:07.170
  • now is empowering him.
  • 00:10:07.180 --> 00:10:11.030
  • Finally, it goes on and tells us in verse 17: "'The Spirit of the
  • 00:10:11.040 --> 00:10:16.160
  • Lord,'" Jesus speaking, "is upon me, because he has anointed me
  • 00:10:16.170 --> 00:10:20.110
  • to preach the gospel to the poor; he has sent me to heal
  • 00:10:20.120 --> 00:10:26.130
  • the brokenhearted."
  • 00:10:26.140 --> 00:10:28.090
  • Without wanting to be too repetitive,
  • 00:10:28.100 --> 00:10:30.190
  • I want you to get it.
  • 00:10:30.200 --> 00:10:32.070
  • If Jesus needed the Holy Spirit to come upon him, and for the
  • 00:10:32.080 --> 00:10:35.230
  • Holy Spirit to be in him, and for the Holy Spirit to lead him,
  • 00:10:35.240 --> 00:10:40.230
  • and then for the Holy Spirit power to be his portion, to
  • 00:10:40.240 --> 00:10:44.260
  • empower him, and then for the Holy Spirit to anoint him, and
  • 00:10:44.270 --> 00:10:49.010
  • finally, for him then knowing that he was sent by the Spirit
  • 00:10:49.020 --> 00:10:55.030
  • to heal the brokenhearted, let's believe for that for our lives.
  • 00:10:55.040 --> 00:10:59.150
  • Let's believe for that for our ministries.
  • 00:10:59.160 --> 00:11:01.280
  • Let's believe for that for our churches.
  • 00:11:01.290 --> 00:11:04.090
  • We need the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:11:04.100 --> 00:11:06.200
  • We need the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:11:06.210 --> 00:11:08.250
  • You need the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:11:08.260 --> 00:11:11.000
  • Where will you be without the Holy Spirit?
  • 00:11:11.010 --> 00:11:20.110
  • I pray for our church the Holy Spirit is on it, the Holy Spirit
  • 00:11:20.120 --> 00:11:25.090
  • is in it and the people, that we can know the power of the Holy
  • 00:11:25.100 --> 00:11:29.170
  • Spirit, that we're led by the Holy Spirit, most importantly,
  • 00:11:29.180 --> 00:11:33.060
  • that we're led by the Holy Spirit, that we can know the
  • 00:11:33.070 --> 00:11:37.200
  • power of the Spirit, and then, ultimately, be anointed and to
  • 00:11:37.210 --> 00:11:42.000
  • know that whatever it is we're called to do that we're sent by
  • 00:11:42.010 --> 00:11:45.030
  • the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:11:45.040 --> 00:11:47.040
  • It adds so much strength to you.
  • 00:11:47.050 --> 00:11:48.190
  • And all of a sudden, the questions come, to know that
  • 00:11:48.200 --> 00:11:52.100
  • you're doing it in the strength of the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:11:52.110 --> 00:11:56.110
  • I pray in our services the Holy Spirit is on them, the Holy
  • 00:11:56.120 --> 00:11:59.250
  • Spirit is in them, and that we're led by the Spirit.
  • 00:11:59.260 --> 00:12:05.130
  • Look, form is important.
  • 00:12:05.140 --> 00:12:09.110
  • I know many people respect liturgy.
  • 00:12:09.120 --> 00:12:11.190
  • We all have our own liturgy.
  • 00:12:11.200 --> 00:12:12.260
  • Maybe mine looks different than yours, but even us charismatic
  • 00:12:12.270 --> 00:12:16.030
  • Pentecostals, we tend to have, what, one fast song, three slow
  • 00:12:16.040 --> 00:12:20.230
  • songs, emcee, prayer requests, greet-meet to each other, we
  • 00:12:20.240 --> 00:12:27.120
  • call it, "Minute mingle," offering, what comes next?
  • 00:12:27.130 --> 00:12:31.230
  • Church news, I guess, few announcements, sing another
  • 00:12:31.240 --> 00:12:34.180
  • song, the preacher preaches, believe for people to get saved,
  • 00:12:34.190 --> 00:12:38.070
  • maybe pray for people a little, give a benediction, "See you
  • 00:12:38.080 --> 00:12:44.010
  • next time."
  • 00:12:44.020 --> 00:12:45.210
  • We all have our form, our liturgy.
  • 00:12:45.220 --> 00:12:50.050
  • But, man, I never want the form to get in the way
  • 00:12:50.060 --> 00:12:52.210
  • of the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:12:52.220 --> 00:12:54.090
  • I want our church to be led by the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:12:54.100 --> 00:12:57.040
  • I want our church to know the power of the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:12:57.050 --> 00:13:00.020
  • I want my life to know that I am sent by the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:13:00.030 --> 00:13:04.280
  • Jesus knew exactly why the Holy Spirit was on his life.
  • 00:13:04.290 --> 00:13:09.100
  • He knew what he was anointed for.
  • 00:13:09.110 --> 00:13:11.110
  • For him, it was, "To preach the gospel to the poor, to heal
  • 00:13:11.120 --> 00:13:13.260
  • broken hearts, to set at liberty those that are bound."
  • 00:13:13.270 --> 00:13:17.280
  • I wanna know the power of the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:13:17.290 --> 00:13:20.100
  • But, you know, I really wanna know the person of the Holy
  • 00:13:20.110 --> 00:13:24.220
  • Spirit.
  • 00:13:24.230 --> 00:13:27.020
  • He's not a wrecking ball.
  • 00:13:27.030 --> 00:13:29.010
  • He doesn't just come and crash and bash, and he's not a
  • 00:13:29.020 --> 00:13:31.230
  • wrecking ball.
  • 00:13:31.240 --> 00:13:33.220
  • Maybe you've been in an environment where it looks like
  • 00:13:33.230 --> 00:13:36.040
  • he was a wrecking ball.
  • 00:13:36.050 --> 00:13:37.160
  • He's not a bully.
  • 00:13:37.170 --> 00:13:39.150
  • He doesn't come in and bully us and force us.
  • 00:13:39.160 --> 00:13:42.130
  • And I guess you'd have to say about Paul when he was Saul and
  • 00:13:42.140 --> 00:13:45.190
  • on that road to Damascus, he definitely got hit with a pretty
  • 00:13:45.200 --> 00:13:49.100
  • powerful punch when the Spirit of God touched him.
  • 00:13:49.110 --> 00:13:53.160
  • But I don't think the Holy Spirit's a bully.
  • 00:13:53.170 --> 00:13:55.160
  • He's not a showman.
  • 00:13:55.170 --> 00:13:58.000
  • He doesn't parade himself, but he's also not a pushover.
  • 00:13:58.010 --> 00:14:04.050
  • You can't manipulate the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:14:04.060 --> 00:14:07.040
  • You can't contrive the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:14:07.050 --> 00:14:10.010
  • You can't somehow think that you can treat the Holy Spirit like
  • 00:14:10.020 --> 00:14:16.080
  • your puppet.
  • 00:14:16.090 --> 00:14:18.070
  • He's not that, but, man, the fact that he is on us and in us
  • 00:14:18.080 --> 00:14:23.140
  • and empowers us and leads us and anoints us and sends us means
  • 00:14:23.150 --> 00:14:31.040
  • that we really can live in the strength of the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:14:31.050 --> 00:14:35.160
  • When I'm weak, I know he is strong.
  • 00:14:35.170 --> 00:14:38.270
  • When I am weak, my own weakness, I know his inherent strength is
  • 00:14:38.280 --> 00:14:43.030
  • imparted into me.
  • 00:14:43.040 --> 00:14:45.050
  • That gives me confidence to get up here, each time I do it, to
  • 00:14:45.060 --> 00:14:48.100
  • know the power of the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:14:48.110 --> 00:14:51.270
  • You know, I don't know that everybody fully understands just
  • 00:14:51.280 --> 00:14:55.150
  • how to close to us the Holy Spirit actually is.
  • 00:14:55.160 --> 00:15:00.070
  • When I grew up in the 1960s in New Zealand, most New Zealand
  • 00:15:00.080 --> 00:15:04.090
  • houses seemed to have the same little ornaments across the
  • 00:15:04.100 --> 00:15:07.100
  • wall, three flying ducks, ornamental ducks, each one got
  • 00:15:07.110 --> 00:15:13.020
  • smaller than the other to make it look like they were moving
  • 00:15:13.030 --> 00:15:17.110
  • away into a further away distance.
  • 00:15:17.120 --> 00:15:20.130
  • Interestingly, they were there for most of my childhood, it not
  • 00:15:20.140 --> 00:15:23.060
  • all my childhood, but they never seemed to make any progress.
  • 00:15:23.070 --> 00:15:30.160
  • But, you know, made me, as a kid, grow up realizing that the
  • 00:15:30.170 --> 00:15:34.110
  • Holy Spirit wasn't far from us, that God was not just
  • 00:15:34.120 --> 00:15:38.180
  • a distant God out there, that he's actually in our house.
  • 00:15:38.190 --> 00:15:42.040
  • He's actually in our lives.
  • 00:15:42.050 --> 00:15:43.290
  • He actually hears our conversation.
  • 00:15:44.000 --> 00:15:45.220
  • Imagine if we really believed he's our Standby,
  • 00:15:45.230 --> 00:15:48.220
  • the Holy Spirit is here.
  • 00:15:48.230 --> 00:15:50.130
  • It's how he's described in the Amplified Bible.
  • 00:15:50.140 --> 00:15:52.260
  • I wonder if our conversations would be different.
  • 00:15:52.270 --> 00:15:55.140
  • I wonder if we'd lift our life, or live our lives a little
  • 00:15:55.150 --> 00:15:58.020
  • different.
  • 00:15:58.030 --> 00:15:59.090
  • I wonder whether we'd panic a little less and whether we'd be
  • 00:15:59.100 --> 00:16:02.280
  • a little less quick to just step out in our own strength and try
  • 00:16:02.290 --> 00:16:08.030
  • to do everything in our own strength and make things happen
  • 00:16:08.040 --> 00:16:10.130
  • in our own strength.
  • 00:16:10.140 --> 00:16:12.090
  • Because our inherent strength is pretty puny compared with God's
  • 00:16:12.100 --> 00:16:15.150
  • dynamis, inherent strength.
  • 00:16:15.160 --> 00:16:22.020
  • So, I don't just wanna know what the Holy Spirit does.
  • 00:16:22.030 --> 00:16:28.060
  • I don't just wanna know the power of the Holy Spirit even.
  • 00:16:28.070 --> 00:16:31.260
  • I wanna know the person of the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:16:31.270 --> 00:16:37.150
  • Brian: You think about it.
  • 00:16:37.160 --> 00:16:38.220
  • You've got some pretty tough stuff happens, and some pretty
  • 00:16:38.230 --> 00:16:41.060
  • vexing situations, but the Holy Spirit, though, he's your
  • 00:16:41.070 --> 00:16:46.030
  • Strength Coach.
  • 00:16:46.040 --> 00:16:47.140
  • Come on, ten spiritual push-ups right now.
  • 00:16:47.150 --> 00:16:50.030
  • I'm your strength coach.
  • 00:16:50.040 --> 00:16:51.180
  • It's for your good, ten spiritual push-ups, come on,
  • 00:16:51.190 --> 00:16:54.200
  • come on.
  • 00:16:54.210 --> 00:16:56.210
  • talking about the Holy Spirit and promising the Holy Spirit,
  • 00:17:02.110 --> 00:17:06.000
  • he says: "'The Comforter will come.'"
  • 00:17:06.010 --> 00:17:07.180
  • He calls him, "The Comforter."
  • 00:17:07.190 --> 00:17:09.010
  • But I love it in the Amplified because it truly does bring
  • 00:17:09.020 --> 00:17:12.070
  • those words to life.
  • 00:17:12.080 --> 00:17:14.130
  • In the Amplified Bible, it says: "However, I am telling you
  • 00:17:14.140 --> 00:17:16.270
  • nothing but the truth when I say it is profitable (good,
  • 00:17:16.280 --> 00:17:20.290
  • expedient, advantageous) for you that I go away.
  • 00:17:21.000 --> 00:17:26.120
  • Because If I do not go away, the Comforter (Counselor, Helper,
  • 00:17:26.130 --> 00:17:31.280
  • Advocate)," beautiful words, "(Intercessor, Strengthener,
  • 00:17:31.290 --> 00:17:37.170
  • Standby) will not come to you [into]," what?
  • 00:17:37.180 --> 00:17:41.120
  • "[Close fellowship with you];" he's close, he's close, "But if
  • 00:17:41.130 --> 00:17:47.260
  • I go away, I will send him to you [to be in]," what?
  • 00:17:47.270 --> 00:17:52.020
  • "[Close fellowship with you]"
  • 00:17:52.030 --> 00:17:55.010
  • Think about that, the Holy Spirit,
  • 00:17:55.020 --> 00:17:58.100
  • not only Comforter, Counselor, Helper, Advocate, Intercessor,
  • 00:17:58.110 --> 00:18:05.040
  • Strengthener, Standby.
  • 00:18:05.050 --> 00:18:08.200
  • I hope you realize right now that you, you're standing on
  • 00:18:08.210 --> 00:18:12.200
  • pretty solid ground.
  • 00:18:12.210 --> 00:18:14.280
  • And we've got pretty solid ground to build these churches
  • 00:18:14.290 --> 00:18:17.020
  • in Australia, no matter what the statistics say, no matter what
  • 00:18:17.030 --> 00:18:19.200
  • the censors are saying, no matter what people are saying,
  • 00:18:19.210 --> 00:18:22.190
  • no matter how marginalized we become over some of the issues
  • 00:18:22.200 --> 00:18:26.050
  • that confront society today, no matter how much accusation,
  • 00:18:26.060 --> 00:18:30.230
  • which seems to be on the rise every single month and every
  • 00:18:30.240 --> 00:18:33.170
  • single year.
  • 00:18:33.180 --> 00:18:34.260
  • What a powerful thing to know, that we have the Holy Spirit,
  • 00:18:34.270 --> 00:18:38.260
  • because no force in hell and no force on earth is stronger than
  • 00:18:38.270 --> 00:18:42.210
  • the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:18:42.220 --> 00:18:45.040
  • Jesus builds his church, he looks after his church, and he
  • 00:18:45.050 --> 00:18:47.270
  • will always look after his church.
  • 00:18:47.280 --> 00:18:51.230
  • I need someone to help me.
  • 00:18:51.240 --> 00:18:53.020
  • I mean, I need someone who maybe is a family man, good believer,
  • 00:18:53.030 --> 00:18:57.100
  • man of the Spirit.
  • 00:18:57.110 --> 00:18:59.180
  • Oh, Jerry, look at that.
  • 00:18:59.190 --> 00:19:01.070
  • What an amazing thing, you're standing right there.
  • 00:19:01.080 --> 00:19:03.190
  • Come on up here, Jerry.
  • 00:19:03.200 --> 00:19:05.120
  • Jerry's a good man.
  • 00:19:05.130 --> 00:19:06.180
  • He's got two little children, beautiful wife, one of our
  • 00:19:06.190 --> 00:19:11.070
  • pastors, he's handsome.
  • 00:19:11.080 --> 00:19:20.190
  • Jerry, you're just walking out life.
  • 00:19:20.200 --> 00:19:23.010
  • You're walking out life.
  • 00:19:23.020 --> 00:19:24.260
  • I'm the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:19:24.270 --> 00:19:25.280
  • You can't see me. You can't see me.
  • 00:19:25.290 --> 00:19:28.030
  • You can't see me.
  • 00:19:28.040 --> 00:19:29.200
  • You can't see me.
  • 00:19:29.210 --> 00:19:31.120
  • We all know I'm not really the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:19:31.130 --> 00:19:33.180
  • If I'm the Holy Spirit, we're in trouble.
  • 00:19:33.190 --> 00:19:37.070
  • I certainly don't want to be, you know, presuming on anything.
  • 00:19:37.080 --> 00:19:42.100
  • Pretending for one moment I'm the Holy Spirit, but I'm the
  • 00:19:42.110 --> 00:19:45.140
  • Holy Spirit and you're walking your way through life.
  • 00:19:45.150 --> 00:19:48.100
  • And as you're walking your way through life, you think about
  • 00:19:48.110 --> 00:19:52.260
  • it.
  • 00:19:52.270 --> 00:19:54.030
  • You've got some pretty tough stuff happens, and some pretty
  • 00:19:54.040 --> 00:19:56.010
  • vexing situations, but the Comforter is with you, the
  • 00:19:56.020 --> 00:20:00.270
  • Comforter.
  • 00:20:00.280 --> 00:20:03.020
  • You're gonna be all right.
  • 00:20:03.030 --> 00:20:04.200
  • It's gonna be okay.
  • 00:20:04.210 --> 00:20:06.180
  • I've got your back.
  • 00:20:06.190 --> 00:20:08.020
  • I'm on your side.
  • 00:20:08.030 --> 00:20:09.210
  • The Comforter is with him.
  • 00:20:09.220 --> 00:20:12.070
  • And then, he just keeps going through life, and, man, he's got
  • 00:20:12.080 --> 00:20:15.230
  • some big decisions to make.
  • 00:20:15.240 --> 00:20:17.120
  • You've got some of those decisions that we all, in
  • 00:20:17.130 --> 00:20:19.120
  • ministry, and in leadership, and as parents, and husbands, we
  • 00:20:19.130 --> 00:20:22.220
  • need to make in life.
  • 00:20:22.230 --> 00:20:24.090
  • And so, he's gotta make some big choices, but the Counselor is
  • 00:20:24.100 --> 00:20:29.040
  • with you.
  • 00:20:29.050 --> 00:20:30.110
  • And I've gotta tell you, this Counselor is better than any
  • 00:20:30.120 --> 00:20:32.040
  • therapist you could find.
  • 00:20:32.050 --> 00:20:33.100
  • He is cheaper by far, and he will never prescribe
  • 00:20:33.110 --> 00:20:37.200
  • prescription drugs, and his counsel is impeccable.
  • 00:20:37.210 --> 00:20:41.200
  • His counsel is impeccable.
  • 00:20:41.210 --> 00:20:43.280
  • His counsel you can stand on every step of the way.
  • 00:20:43.290 --> 00:20:47.250
  • So you've got the Comforter.
  • 00:20:47.260 --> 00:20:49.210
  • You're gonna be okay [kissing], everything's okay.
  • 00:20:49.220 --> 00:20:53.070
  • And you've got the Counselor, better than any psychologist you
  • 00:20:53.080 --> 00:20:58.090
  • could find.
  • 00:20:58.100 --> 00:21:00.050
  • You've got also the Helper because, man, life has its
  • 00:21:00.060 --> 00:21:03.050
  • burdens, doesn't it?
  • 00:21:03.060 --> 00:21:04.280
  • And you've got the Helper.
  • 00:21:04.290 --> 00:21:06.140
  • And sometimes, you've gotta pick up that burden.
  • 00:21:06.150 --> 00:21:10.080
  • I know the Bible tells us that Jesus carries the burden, but
  • 00:21:10.090 --> 00:21:12.200
  • just for the sake of the illustration, pick up your
  • 00:21:12.210 --> 00:21:16.000
  • burden.
  • 00:21:16.010 --> 00:21:17.170
  • Pick up your burden.
  • 00:21:17.180 --> 00:21:18.250
  • And look at this, the Helper, the Helper is right there with
  • 00:21:18.260 --> 00:21:24.160
  • you.
  • 00:21:24.170 --> 00:21:25.290
  • It's amazing when you lift weights, which I used to do many
  • 00:21:26.000 --> 00:21:28.080
  • years ago, it doesn't take much for the coach to just take a
  • 00:21:28.090 --> 00:21:32.040
  • little bit of pressure off you, spotting you, they call it, and
  • 00:21:32.050 --> 00:21:35.160
  • it's incredible how much lighter that impossible burden becomes.
  • 00:21:35.170 --> 00:21:40.030
  • The Comforter, the Counselor, the Helper, and then you've got
  • 00:21:40.040 --> 00:21:44.140
  • the Advocate.
  • 00:21:44.150 --> 00:21:45.220
  • He's your Advocate.
  • 00:21:45.230 --> 00:21:47.000
  • What's that mean?
  • 00:21:47.010 --> 00:21:48.070
  • As people are speaking bad about you, things are coming against
  • 00:21:48.080 --> 00:21:50.150
  • you, life is being unfair, you don't know what to say.
  • 00:21:50.160 --> 00:21:54.250
  • You don't know how to respond.
  • 00:21:54.260 --> 00:21:56.170
  • It just seems the unfairness of it catches, but your Advocate is
  • 00:21:56.180 --> 00:22:02.030
  • your Spokesperson, just like the poor have advocates.
  • 00:22:02.040 --> 00:22:05.150
  • There are advocates for the poor.
  • 00:22:05.160 --> 00:22:07.060
  • There are advocates for women's rights and every other kinda
  • 00:22:07.070 --> 00:22:09.140
  • right you can imagine.
  • 00:22:09.150 --> 00:22:11.090
  • And you have an Advocate, and he is speaking for you.
  • 00:22:11.100 --> 00:22:15.050
  • That's what advocates do, they speak for you.
  • 00:22:15.060 --> 00:22:17.190
  • And so, you're under attack, like some of you are, but the
  • 00:22:17.200 --> 00:22:20.130
  • Advocate, he's got you.
  • 00:22:20.140 --> 00:22:23.000
  • He's got you.
  • 00:22:23.010 --> 00:22:24.050
  • He's gonna fight for you.
  • 00:22:24.060 --> 00:22:25.270
  • He has got you, the Advocate.
  • 00:22:25.280 --> 00:22:28.180
  • You don't have nothing to fear here, bro.
  • 00:22:28.190 --> 00:22:30.180
  • Look at the Advocate.
  • 00:22:30.190 --> 00:22:32.140
  • Hey, the Advocate, he has got you.
  • 00:22:32.150 --> 00:22:36.080
  • And then, the Intercessor, I love that one.
  • 00:22:36.090 --> 00:22:39.230
  • That literally means the Holy Spirit, when you're desperate,
  • 00:22:39.240 --> 00:22:43.060
  • is interceding for you.
  • 00:22:43.070 --> 00:22:44.220
  • When you're facing challenge in your ministry, he's actually
  • 00:22:44.230 --> 00:22:48.270
  • praying for you.
  • 00:22:48.280 --> 00:22:50.170
  • He is going to the Father, he's seated at his right hand, and he
  • 00:22:50.180 --> 00:22:53.050
  • is interceding for you.
  • 00:22:53.060 --> 00:22:56.080
  • How powerful is that, that you have Jesus praying for you?
  • 00:22:56.090 --> 00:22:59.200
  • And you have Jesus praying for you as your Intercessor.
  • 00:22:59.210 --> 00:23:06.030
  • The Holy Spirit, of course, is--Jesus intercessing, and
  • 00:23:06.040 --> 00:23:10.090
  • the Holy Spirit, though, the Expanded, Amplified version,
  • 00:23:10.100 --> 00:23:14.260
  • he's your Advocate.
  • 00:23:14.270 --> 00:23:16.060
  • He's your Intercessor.
  • 00:23:16.070 --> 00:23:18.020
  • I love this one.
  • 00:23:18.030 --> 00:23:19.080
  • He's your Strengthener.
  • 00:23:19.090 --> 00:23:20.290
  • The Holy Spirit is your Strength Coach.
  • 00:23:21.000 --> 00:23:23.090
  • Come on, ten spiritual push-ups right now.
  • 00:23:23.100 --> 00:23:26.010
  • I'm your strength coach.
  • 00:23:26.020 --> 00:23:27.180
  • It's for your good, ten spiritual push-ups, come on,
  • 00:23:27.190 --> 00:23:30.280
  • come on, come on, you're only going down a third of the way,
  • 00:23:30.290 --> 00:23:33.170
  • six, seven, eight.
  • 00:23:33.180 --> 00:23:36.080
  • Come on, go down further, nine, come on, one more, ten.
  • 00:23:36.090 --> 00:23:41.080
  • How's that?
  • 00:23:41.090 --> 00:23:42.180
  • He's your Strength Coach.
  • 00:23:42.190 --> 00:23:45.090
  • We've got a Strength Coach.
  • 00:23:45.100 --> 00:23:47.050
  • And then he's your Standby, your Copilot.
  • 00:23:47.060 --> 00:23:50.220
  • Means when you're driving your car, you've got the Standby,
  • 00:23:50.230 --> 00:23:55.100
  • your Copilot there right beside you until you go 1 kilometer
  • 00:23:55.110 --> 00:24:00.030
  • an hour above the speed limit.
  • 00:24:00.040 --> 00:24:01.230
  • Jerry: I would never.
  • 00:24:01.240 --> 00:24:03.020
  • Brian: And even then, he's pretty gracious,
  • 00:24:03.030 --> 00:24:05.060
  • I would think, else I possibly wouldn't be here.
  • 00:24:05.070 --> 00:24:09.140
  • Hey, you think about that for a moment.
  • 00:24:09.150 --> 00:24:12.220
  • Thanks very much, Jerry.
  • 00:24:12.230 --> 00:24:14.080
  • You think about all that.
  • 00:24:14.090 --> 00:24:19.180
  • No wonder we need, as pastors and leaders, as people who got
  • 00:24:19.190 --> 00:24:22.060
  • big lives in our own personal worlds and still sowing in and
  • 00:24:22.070 --> 00:24:27.080
  • giving our best to the kingdom, and being heavily involved in
  • 00:24:27.090 --> 00:24:30.150
  • our church, what a beautiful thing to know that the Holy
  • 00:24:30.160 --> 00:24:34.280
  • Spirit is with us.
  • 00:24:34.290 --> 00:24:37.080
  • He's on us.
  • 00:24:37.090 --> 00:24:39.030
  • He's in us.
  • 00:24:39.040 --> 00:24:40.050
  • He leads us.
  • 00:24:40.060 --> 00:24:42.110
  • Brian: Jesus knew, "The Spirit of the Lord
  • 00:24:45.200 --> 00:24:47.060
  • is upon me, because."
  • 00:24:47.070 --> 00:24:49.100
  • You have a because.
  • 00:24:49.110 --> 00:24:50.130
  • I have a because.
  • 00:24:50.140 --> 00:24:51.140
  • We have a because.
  • 00:24:51.150 --> 00:24:53.090
  • If we ever lose sight of the because, then we lose sight
  • 00:24:53.100 --> 00:24:57.110
  • of the real purpose of the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:24:57.120 --> 00:25:03.060
  • 30-year-old guys.
  • 00:25:06.220 --> 00:25:07.270
  • They were both 30, and the two conversations were totally
  • 00:25:07.280 --> 00:25:10.030
  • unrelated to each other.
  • 00:25:10.040 --> 00:25:11.240
  • So, different conversations, different times, but they both
  • 00:25:11.250 --> 00:25:14.150
  • told me the same thing.
  • 00:25:14.160 --> 00:25:16.140
  • Two actually under-thirty-year-olds
  • 00:25:16.150 --> 00:25:20.130
  • said this to me.
  • 00:25:20.140 --> 00:25:22.130
  • They said, "By the time I'm 30, I'm believing to be
  • 00:25:22.140 --> 00:25:25.230
  • a millionaire."
  • 00:25:25.240 --> 00:25:28.080
  • And so I said to one of them when he said to me,
  • 00:25:28.090 --> 00:25:30.020
  • "At 30, I'm believing to be a millionaire,"
  • 00:25:30.030 --> 00:25:32.150
  • I said, "Why do you want to be a millionaire?"
  • 00:25:32.160 --> 00:25:34.010
  • And he said, "Well, I wanna be rich."
  • 00:25:34.020 --> 00:25:36.050
  • Well, you know, I don't know where that guy is.
  • 00:25:36.060 --> 00:25:38.150
  • I don't know whether or not he's rich.
  • 00:25:38.160 --> 00:25:40.010
  • I don't know what's happened to him.
  • 00:25:40.020 --> 00:25:41.180
  • But the other one, in a different conversation,
  • 00:25:41.190 --> 00:25:44.090
  • when he told me that by 30, he wants to be a millionaire,
  • 00:25:44.100 --> 00:25:48.120
  • I said, "Why do you wanna be a millionaire?"
  • 00:25:48.130 --> 00:25:50.180
  • And I've never ever forgotten his answer.
  • 00:25:50.190 --> 00:25:54.080
  • He said, "Because I wanna be involved.
  • 00:25:54.090 --> 00:25:56.000
  • I wanna help fund the salvation of the earth."
  • 00:25:56.010 --> 00:25:59.230
  • And that particular man, now well in his 50s, is still
  • 00:25:59.240 --> 00:26:02.170
  • in our church, and indeed, he is helping fund
  • 00:26:02.180 --> 00:26:06.090
  • the salvation of the earth.
  • 00:26:06.100 --> 00:26:09.010
  • Because he knew his because.
  • 00:26:09.020 --> 00:26:12.230
  • He understood there was a because.
  • 00:26:12.240 --> 00:26:15.130
  • And the Bible says, "The Spirit of the Lord is upon you,
  • 00:26:15.140 --> 00:26:18.010
  • because."
  • 00:26:18.020 --> 00:26:19.240
  • In Psalm 80, verse 17, speaking to the Lord, the Bible says:
  • 00:26:19.250 --> 00:26:23.240
  • "Let your hand be upon the man of your right hand,"
  • 00:26:23.250 --> 00:26:28.010
  • it's talking about us, humans.
  • 00:26:28.020 --> 00:26:29.080
  • It's not in this psalm talking about Jesus.
  • 00:26:29.090 --> 00:26:32.230
  • "The son of man whom you make strong for," what?
  • 00:26:32.240 --> 00:26:36.180
  • "For yourself."
  • 00:26:36.190 --> 00:26:39.030
  • The Holy Spirit, he makes us strong for himself.
  • 00:26:39.040 --> 00:26:45.270
  • Jesus knew, "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because."
  • 00:26:45.280 --> 00:26:49.020
  • And we never should lose sight of our because.
  • 00:26:49.030 --> 00:26:52.020
  • One 30-year-old, he had no real everlasting, eternal because,
  • 00:26:52.030 --> 00:26:56.250
  • but the other one, he knew he wanted God to bless and favor
  • 00:26:56.260 --> 00:27:01.060
  • him, but he had the most powerful because.
  • 00:27:01.070 --> 00:27:04.050
  • He wanted to sow into the kingdom, make a difference, and
  • 00:27:04.060 --> 00:27:06.200
  • see the gospel spread.
  • 00:27:06.210 --> 00:27:08.020
  • And for us, that's why the Holy Spirit is upon us.
  • 00:27:08.030 --> 00:27:11.190
  • "You'll receive power when the Holy Spirit, the Holy Ghost
  • 00:27:11.200 --> 00:27:14.050
  • comes upon you, and you'll be witnesses to him in Jerusalem,
  • 00:27:14.060 --> 00:27:17.030
  • Judea, Samaria, and Australia, all the way to the ends of the
  • 00:27:17.040 --> 00:27:21.290
  • earth," powerful.
  • 00:27:22.000 --> 00:27:24.020
  • So we've got our because.
  • 00:27:24.030 --> 00:27:25.210
  • It's called the gospel, and the big and the broad way that we
  • 00:27:25.220 --> 00:27:31.120
  • represent the good news of Jesus.
  • 00:27:31.130 --> 00:27:34.190
  • We've got our because.
  • 00:27:34.200 --> 00:27:36.170
  • I believe the Holy Spirit is our strength today, and I know we
  • 00:27:36.180 --> 00:27:40.030
  • need the Holy Spirit, and I've felt in my heart we just gotta
  • 00:27:40.040 --> 00:27:43.110
  • spend time focusing on the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:27:43.120 --> 00:27:46.130
  • I really felt it.
  • 00:27:46.140 --> 00:27:48.220
  • When people know their because, you know, that demonized man in
  • 00:27:48.230 --> 00:27:52.250
  • Gadara, the other side on the Galilee, that Jesus goes across
  • 00:27:52.260 --> 00:27:57.150
  • this guy.
  • 00:27:57.160 --> 00:27:58.230
  • He was in the tombs and no one could control him.
  • 00:27:58.240 --> 00:28:01.100
  • Put chains, he'd break them.
  • 00:28:01.110 --> 00:28:02.090
  • He was naked.
  • 00:28:02.100 --> 00:28:03.080
  • He was a fearful sight.
  • 00:28:03.090 --> 00:28:05.150
  • I doubt there whether very many people would go and roam in that
  • 00:28:05.160 --> 00:28:08.100
  • cemetery at night because this guy and all the demons in him
  • 00:28:08.110 --> 00:28:12.110
  • were ruling the cemetery.
  • 00:28:12.120 --> 00:28:13.190
  • But when Jesus came along, obviously, the demons were no
  • 00:28:13.200 --> 00:28:16.070
  • match for Jesus Christ.
  • 00:28:16.080 --> 00:28:17.150
  • They started begging Jesus that they could go into this pigs, to
  • 00:28:17.160 --> 00:28:20.050
  • the swine, and Jesus gave them permission.
  • 00:28:20.060 --> 00:28:22.280
  • So, sure enough, they went into the swine, and the swine, they
  • 00:28:22.290 --> 00:28:25.180
  • ran off the cliffs into the lake, into Galilee, and killed
  • 00:28:25.190 --> 00:28:28.160
  • themselves.
  • 00:28:28.170 --> 00:28:30.040
  • So, now, the Bible talks about this man, listen, "Clothed and
  • 00:28:30.050 --> 00:28:32.240
  • in his right mind."
  • 00:28:32.250 --> 00:28:35.210
  • He was clothed and he was in his right mind.
  • 00:28:35.220 --> 00:28:39.210
  • And this is what he says to Jesus: "Hey, Jesus, I wanna stay
  • 00:28:39.220 --> 00:28:41.210
  • with you."
  • 00:28:41.220 --> 00:28:43.110
  • Who wouldn't wanna stay with Jesus?
  • 00:28:43.120 --> 00:28:44.240
  • He said, "I wanna stay with you."
  • 00:28:44.250 --> 00:28:47.240
  • But Jesus said, "'Return to your own house, and tell what great
  • 00:28:47.250 --> 00:28:52.240
  • things God has done for you.'
  • 00:28:52.250 --> 00:28:55.140
  • And he went his way and proclaimed throughout the whole
  • 00:28:55.150 --> 00:28:57.250
  • city what great things, what Jesus had done for him."
  • 00:28:57.260 --> 00:29:00.130
  • You see, there was a because.
  • 00:29:00.140 --> 00:29:02.150
  • If ever lose sight of the because, then we lose sight of
  • 00:29:02.160 --> 00:29:05.180
  • the real purpose of the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:29:05.190 --> 00:29:09.080
  • You have a because.
  • 00:29:09.090 --> 00:29:10.050
  • I have a because.
  • 00:29:10.060 --> 00:29:11.080
  • We have a because.
  • 00:29:11.090 --> 00:29:13.040
  • And the because is what's eternal.
  • 00:29:13.050 --> 00:29:15.180
  • He will make you strong as sons of man, as dust people in the
  • 00:29:15.190 --> 00:29:20.140
  • form of Adam.
  • 00:29:20.150 --> 00:29:22.120
  • He will make you strong not just for yourself, but for himself,
  • 00:29:22.130 --> 00:29:27.230
  • so cool.
  • 00:29:27.240 --> 00:29:29.110
  • All right, let me finish with a little bit of fun.
  • 00:29:29.120 --> 00:29:31.140
  • Ted Talks, everyone, I guess, has possibly heard of Ted Talks.
  • 00:29:31.150 --> 00:29:36.040
  • I don't even know who Ted is, but, man, a lot of people talk
  • 00:29:36.050 --> 00:29:39.030
  • on Ted's behalf.
  • 00:29:39.040 --> 00:29:41.020
  • There's people all around the world speaking on behalf of Ted.
  • 00:29:41.030 --> 00:29:45.140
  • Ted's got a lot of advocates 'cause plenty of people talking
  • 00:29:45.150 --> 00:29:48.270
  • for Ted.
  • 00:29:48.280 --> 00:29:50.280
  • And, of course, a Ted Talk, it goes for maybe 15, 20 minutes,
  • 00:29:50.290 --> 00:29:54.170
  • and it's so polished.
  • 00:29:54.180 --> 00:29:56.030
  • They're so together and it's polished and it's shmick,
  • 00:29:56.040 --> 00:30:01.100
  • and it's eloquent and articulate and a Ted Talk.
  • 00:30:01.110 --> 00:30:06.210
  • And usually, there's phenomenal content, and incredible,
  • 00:30:06.220 --> 00:30:11.080
  • incredible concepts are put across.
  • 00:30:11.090 --> 00:30:13.290
  • Now, you guys know, you know they call Hillsong,
  • 00:30:14.000 --> 00:30:17.030
  • "Pentecostal."
  • 00:30:17.040 --> 00:30:18.160
  • I think a more broader international word would be more
  • 00:30:18.170 --> 00:30:20.250
  • like a Charismatic church than a classical traditional
  • 00:30:20.260 --> 00:30:23.220
  • Pentecostal church, especially if you think of it as
  • 00:30:23.230 --> 00:30:26.160
  • denominations or denominationalism.
  • 00:30:26.170 --> 00:30:29.080
  • But we definitely believe in the movement of the Holy Spirit
  • 00:30:29.090 --> 00:30:32.130
  • today, and the outworking of the Spirit in our lives today, and
  • 00:30:32.140 --> 00:30:35.130
  • the demonstration of the Spirit, and the gifts of the Spirit.
  • 00:30:35.140 --> 00:30:37.290
  • We definitely believe in all of that.
  • 00:30:38.000 --> 00:30:40.040
  • So, Ted Talks, so polished, so perfect.
  • 00:30:40.050 --> 00:30:44.280
  • I love a good Ted Talk.
  • 00:30:44.290 --> 00:30:48.060
  • Would you rather be a Ted talker or a tongue talker?
  • 00:30:48.070 --> 00:30:55.270
  • I'd rather be a tongue talker than a Ted talker.
  • 00:30:55.280 --> 00:31:03.000
  • And I know you guys come from many sections of the church.
  • 00:31:03.010 --> 00:31:05.250
  • I'm just havin' a bit of fun.
  • 00:31:05.260 --> 00:31:07.050
  • And I will come with you to your Ted Talk.
  • 00:31:07.060 --> 00:31:10.020
  • But what I will tell you this, 'cause I'm not really even
  • 00:31:10.030 --> 00:31:12.200
  • talking about speaking in tongues here.
  • 00:31:12.210 --> 00:31:15.230
  • I need the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:31:15.240 --> 00:31:17.290
  • You need the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:31:18.000 --> 00:31:19.290
  • We need the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:31:20.000 --> 00:31:22.010
  • Thank God for the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:31:22.020 --> 00:31:24.090
  • Can anyone say, "Thank God for the Holy Spirit"?
  • 00:31:24.100 --> 00:31:28.100
  • Brian: Well, I love the opportunity after I preach to
  • 00:31:32.020 --> 00:31:34.150
  • have a conversation with good friends and good people just
  • 00:31:34.160 --> 00:31:37.150
  • about the message that was spoken and just see how we can
  • 00:31:37.160 --> 00:31:40.130
  • apply it to our lives.
  • 00:31:40.140 --> 00:31:41.250
  • So I'm blessed today.
  • 00:31:41.260 --> 00:31:42.290
  • I've got Ben and Karalee Fielding with me, a great young
  • 00:31:43.000 --> 00:31:45.120
  • couple.
  • 00:31:45.130 --> 00:31:46.200
  • They've got two boys and now, Karalee's pregnant with their
  • 00:31:46.210 --> 00:31:49.000
  • third child.
  • 00:31:49.010 --> 00:31:50.140
  • Ben is studying law in Sydney, Sydney University, but he's also
  • 00:31:50.150 --> 00:31:54.140
  • maybe known to many because of his songwriting and worship
  • 00:31:54.150 --> 00:31:57.280
  • leading.
  • 00:31:57.290 --> 00:31:59.050
  • He was one of the writers on "Mighty to Save," and a whole
  • 00:31:59.060 --> 00:32:01.110
  • lot of other fantastic tunes.
  • 00:32:01.120 --> 00:32:02.190
  • And he's a great blessing to our church in that way.
  • 00:32:02.200 --> 00:32:06.290
  • Karalee, well, Karalee is phenomenal.
  • 00:32:07.000 --> 00:32:10.020
  • She works close with Bobbie and I, and she helps us with much of
  • 00:32:10.030 --> 00:32:13.020
  • our writing and does so much behind the scenes, and what a
  • 00:32:13.030 --> 00:32:16.080
  • blessing she is.
  • 00:32:16.090 --> 00:32:17.220
  • So, great to have you guys here, and we're talking about the Holy
  • 00:32:17.230 --> 00:32:20.160
  • Spirit.
  • 00:32:20.170 --> 00:32:21.110
  • Karalee Fielding: Yes.
  • 00:32:21.120 --> 00:32:22.060
  • Ben Fielding: Fantastic.
  • 00:32:22.070 --> 00:32:23.060
  • Brian: Do you believe in the Holy Spirit?
  • 00:32:23.070 --> 00:32:24.130
  • Ben: Absolutely, I believe in God the Father, Christ the Son,
  • 00:32:24.140 --> 00:32:28.040
  • the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:32:28.050 --> 00:32:29.110
  • Brian: Well, that was another song you were involved with.
  • 00:32:29.120 --> 00:32:30.160
  • Ben: I was just driving it in there, sorry to do that.
  • 00:32:30.170 --> 00:32:32.110
  • It's a force of habit.
  • 00:32:32.120 --> 00:32:33.180
  • Brian: "The Creed," exactly.
  • 00:32:33.190 --> 00:32:35.070
  • And do you think sometimes people underestimate the impact
  • 00:32:35.080 --> 00:32:40.050
  • of the Holy Spirit in the Godhead or the role of the Holy
  • 00:32:40.060 --> 00:32:42.140
  • Spirit in the Godhead?
  • 00:32:42.150 --> 00:32:44.110
  • Ben: Yeah, you know, I mean, I have had the experience and
  • 00:32:44.120 --> 00:32:47.120
  • the great opportunity to, you know, worship in many different
  • 00:32:47.130 --> 00:32:51.120
  • expressions of the church.
  • 00:32:51.130 --> 00:32:53.010
  • And one of the things that I've observed is, often, people don't
  • 00:32:53.020 --> 00:32:57.010
  • have a problem with having a high view of Jesus.
  • 00:32:57.020 --> 00:32:59.230
  • That's sort of across the board.
  • 00:32:59.240 --> 00:33:01.010
  • But there definitely can be a reluctancy or a, you know,
  • 00:33:01.020 --> 00:33:05.290
  • I don't know, just a hesitation about the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:33:06.000 --> 00:33:08.070
  • And I don't know what that necessarily is, but I love that,
  • 00:33:08.080 --> 00:33:11.110
  • like, the Bible tells us to eagerly desire all the gifts of
  • 00:33:11.120 --> 00:33:14.080
  • the Spirit, that the posture of the believer is to be one of
  • 00:33:14.090 --> 00:33:16.230
  • leaning in to all of the Godhead, so.
  • 00:33:16.240 --> 00:33:21.080
  • Karalee: Yeah, even tonight, actually, as you were preaching,
  • 00:33:21.090 --> 00:33:23.050
  • it's funny that you mention that Scripture because when you were
  • 00:33:23.060 --> 00:33:26.140
  • asking us to pray, and I was just reminded again of that.
  • 00:33:26.150 --> 00:33:29.050
  • I've been a Christian for, I mean, I'm 31 now, and I grew up
  • 00:33:29.060 --> 00:33:33.030
  • in a family that went to church, and so I encountered the Holy
  • 00:33:33.040 --> 00:33:36.200
  • Spirit at a really young age.
  • 00:33:36.210 --> 00:33:38.130
  • But just as you were preaching and we were leaning into that
  • 00:33:38.140 --> 00:33:41.140
  • message in the worship time, I felt like God said, "Eagerly
  • 00:33:41.150 --> 00:33:44.210
  • desire the gifts of the Holy Spirit."
  • 00:33:44.220 --> 00:33:46.170
  • And it's not--I think sometimes you can get a little bit, maybe
  • 00:33:46.180 --> 00:33:49.120
  • too familiar with the Holy Spirit in your Christian walk.
  • 00:33:49.130 --> 00:33:54.000
  • But I felt, again, like God was saying, like, "The gifts are for
  • 00:33:54.010 --> 00:33:56.280
  • everybody, and you should eagerly and, like, desperately
  • 00:33:56.290 --> 00:34:00.040
  • desire the gifts of the Holy Spirit," and I love that.
  • 00:34:00.050 --> 00:34:06.280
  • Brian: I grew up in a, what I've often described as, "A
  • 00:34:06.290 --> 00:34:09.050
  • Pentecostal church on steroids," and so that was my background.
  • 00:34:09.060 --> 00:34:12.230
  • In youth, I saw a lot of things that I believe were completely
  • 00:34:12.240 --> 00:34:15.110
  • out of balance, but there was also some great, great times.
  • 00:34:15.120 --> 00:34:18.050
  • There was also sometimes a great sense of God's presence.
  • 00:34:18.060 --> 00:34:22.050
  • of the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:34:26.220 --> 00:34:27.280
  • I think, so easily, even if we know that he is God the Holy
  • 00:34:27.290 --> 00:34:31.100
  • Spirit, but we can still treat him like he's a force.
  • 00:34:31.110 --> 00:34:34.250
  • And so, it's like everybody, you know, we don't wanna just be
  • 00:34:34.260 --> 00:34:37.260
  • loved for what we do.
  • 00:34:37.270 --> 00:34:39.230
  • We wanna be loved for who we are.
  • 00:34:39.240 --> 00:34:41.090
  • And I just think that just the person of the Holy Spirit,
  • 00:34:41.100 --> 00:34:43.240
  • really, his power and everything the Holy Spirit does, it's only
  • 00:34:43.250 --> 00:34:48.000
  • an outworking of who he is anyway.
  • 00:34:48.010 --> 00:34:50.290
  • So, if you think about the person of the Holy Spirit, who
  • 00:34:51.000 --> 00:34:53.270
  • the Holy Spirit actually is, is there any way you could describe
  • 00:34:53.280 --> 00:34:57.110
  • that?
  • 00:34:57.120 --> 00:34:59.110
  • Ben: Well, I don't know.
  • 00:34:59.120 --> 00:35:00.190
  • I mean, I loved when you talked about Luke 4, and, like, the
  • 00:35:00.200 --> 00:35:03.200
  • picture of Jesus himself being filled with the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:35:03.210 --> 00:35:08.100
  • And I loved that the picture then, it says that Jesus then
  • 00:35:08.110 --> 00:35:11.170
  • was sent out and he went out through the empowerment of the
  • 00:35:11.180 --> 00:35:14.140
  • Holy Spirit.
  • 00:35:14.150 --> 00:35:15.260
  • And I think that the powerful thing about that is that we all
  • 00:35:15.270 --> 00:35:19.000
  • need the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:35:19.010 --> 00:35:21.260
  • We all need the empowerment of the Holy Spirit, and I love that
  • 00:35:21.270 --> 00:35:24.210
  • thought too, that it's not just about our own lives being
  • 00:35:24.220 --> 00:35:27.240
  • strengthened and edified, but it's about what God wants to do
  • 00:35:27.250 --> 00:35:31.200
  • through us.
  • 00:35:31.210 --> 00:35:33.010
  • And I think that's a beautiful picture of the Holy Spirit,
  • 00:35:33.020 --> 00:35:36.050
  • bringing us together as whole people, but bringing us together
  • 00:35:36.060 --> 00:35:39.020
  • in community as well.
  • 00:35:39.030 --> 00:35:42.010
  • Karalee: I really resonate with the idea of the Holy Spirit
  • 00:35:42.020 --> 00:35:44.160
  • as, you know, all those described in the Bible, a
  • 00:35:44.170 --> 00:35:46.230
  • Comforter and a Counselor and an Advocate and a Helper.
  • 00:35:46.240 --> 00:35:49.290
  • Because the truth is, like, for me, the Holy Spirit is such a
  • 00:35:50.000 --> 00:35:53.110
  • personal, like, representation of God to me, you know?
  • 00:35:53.120 --> 00:35:57.210
  • Ben travels a lot, just the nature of his ministry and
  • 00:35:57.220 --> 00:36:01.270
  • things like that.
  • 00:36:01.280 --> 00:36:03.040
  • And over the years, I've just found the Holy Spirit to be
  • 00:36:03.050 --> 00:36:05.190
  • exactly those things.
  • 00:36:05.200 --> 00:36:07.030
  • When my husband is away, the physical, you know, helper and
  • 00:36:07.040 --> 00:36:09.220
  • companion and things like that, I actually find when, like, I
  • 00:36:09.230 --> 00:36:14.060
  • just have found the Holy Spirit to be so real to me as a
  • 00:36:14.070 --> 00:36:17.230
  • Companion and a Helper and yeah, an Advocate in those times
  • 00:36:17.240 --> 00:36:22.240
  • particularly.
  • 00:36:22.250 --> 00:36:24.200
  • Brian: I think it's so easy for us to squeeze the Holy
  • 00:36:24.210 --> 00:36:26.140
  • Spirit out of our lives, and to squeeze the Holy Spirit, in a
  • 00:36:26.150 --> 00:36:28.260
  • funny way, even out of our prayer life, you know, in the
  • 00:36:28.270 --> 00:36:31.180
  • sense that, you know, we're desperate for Jesus to do
  • 00:36:31.190 --> 00:36:33.260
  • something.
  • 00:36:33.270 --> 00:36:35.040
  • And just those thoughts, those words you described, which is
  • 00:36:35.050 --> 00:36:37.270
  • the way the Amplified Bible elongates the idea of a
  • 00:36:37.280 --> 00:36:40.270
  • Comforter, it puts in there, "Counselor, Helper," what is it?
  • 00:36:40.280 --> 00:36:46.000
  • "Advocate, Intercessor, Strengthener," so many
  • 00:36:46.010 --> 00:36:48.260
  • incredible things.
  • 00:36:48.270 --> 00:36:50.260
  • And to think that sometimes we would squeeze the Holy Spirit
  • 00:36:50.270 --> 00:36:53.070
  • out, and yet, we have so much to gain through the presence of the
  • 00:36:53.080 --> 00:36:57.000
  • Holy Spirit in our lives.
  • 00:36:57.010 --> 00:36:58.150
  • Karalee: Absolutely, I don't know about you, but I've found
  • 00:36:58.160 --> 00:37:00.250
  • the Holy Spirit came even more real to me when I became a
  • 00:37:00.260 --> 00:37:03.140
  • parent.
  • 00:37:03.150 --> 00:37:05.020
  • And the fact that, like-- Ben: Desperation.
  • 00:37:05.030 --> 00:37:07.140
  • Karalee: Yeah, no, really, but you just, like, you need the
  • 00:37:07.150 --> 00:37:10.010
  • Holy Spirit to direct you and guide you.
  • 00:37:10.020 --> 00:37:12.270
  • And I know our prayer is always that the Holy Spirit would be
  • 00:37:12.280 --> 00:37:15.100
  • the head of our household in the way that he would be those
  • 00:37:15.110 --> 00:37:18.290
  • things and teach us and lead us with our children, and yeah.
  • 00:37:19.000 --> 00:37:23.170
  • Brian: Do you feel like the Holy Spirit, that people are
  • 00:37:23.180 --> 00:37:26.170
  • afraid of the Holy Spirit because they equate it to maybe
  • 00:37:26.180 --> 00:37:30.080
  • some crazy Pentecostal thing they've seen?
  • 00:37:30.090 --> 00:37:33.000
  • Or do you think there's any other reason for a reticence
  • 00:37:33.010 --> 00:37:36.010
  • when it comes to people having an unease around the Holy Spirit
  • 00:37:36.020 --> 00:37:40.260
  • and the thought of the Holy Spirit?
  • 00:37:40.270 --> 00:37:42.280
  • Ben: Yeah, I mean, I'd love to hear what you would say about
  • 00:37:42.290 --> 00:37:44.180
  • that.
  • 00:37:44.190 --> 00:37:46.050
  • But yeah, I mean, I don't know.
  • 00:37:46.060 --> 00:37:47.110
  • I think too, like, the Holy Spirit's so active as well.
  • 00:37:47.120 --> 00:37:50.040
  • And I don't know, I think there's definitely sometimes the
  • 00:37:50.050 --> 00:37:53.230
  • way that the Spirit will move in our lives, but also in the
  • 00:37:53.240 --> 00:37:58.090
  • church is sometimes uncomfortable, you know?
  • 00:37:58.100 --> 00:38:01.260
  • It's the Spirit of God is calling us sometimes outside of
  • 00:38:01.270 --> 00:38:04.010
  • what is comfortable.
  • 00:38:04.020 --> 00:38:06.100
  • But I don't know, I think that the overall picture of the
  • 00:38:06.110 --> 00:38:11.180
  • goodness of God and the fact that, like, God, he only leads
  • 00:38:11.190 --> 00:38:15.080
  • us into places where he himself is going with us.
  • 00:38:15.090 --> 00:38:19.070
  • And I love that picture too of the Holy Spirit right alongside
  • 00:38:19.080 --> 00:38:21.160
  • us.
  • 00:38:21.170 --> 00:38:22.230
  • That I think, you know, as we walk with God and as we eagerly
  • 00:38:22.240 --> 00:38:26.060
  • desire everything that God has for our lives, I think there's a
  • 00:38:26.070 --> 00:38:30.120
  • trust element that maybe gets built, I hope.
  • 00:38:30.130 --> 00:38:34.010
  • But how would you answer that?
  • 00:38:34.020 --> 00:38:35.060
  • Like, what do you think?
  • 00:38:35.070 --> 00:38:36.210
  • Like, why would people be reluctant?
  • 00:38:36.220 --> 00:38:38.230
  • Karalee: Yeah.
  • 00:38:38.240 --> 00:38:40.000
  • Brian: Well, I think with the Holy Spirit, firstly, there's a
  • 00:38:40.010 --> 00:38:41.140
  • lot of different theology around the Holy Spirit, obviously.
  • 00:38:41.150 --> 00:38:44.020
  • And to me, that's okay.
  • 00:38:44.030 --> 00:38:46.290
  • You know, I don't think we ought to be trying to sort out
  • 00:38:47.000 --> 00:38:49.270
  • everyone's theology, and I don't think I want everyone else
  • 00:38:49.280 --> 00:38:52.020
  • trying to sort out my theology.
  • 00:38:52.030 --> 00:38:53.250
  • I think, just like anything, the way we experience, encounter,
  • 00:38:53.260 --> 00:38:59.210
  • think about, and pray in the Holy Spirit, it may be different
  • 00:38:59.220 --> 00:39:05.010
  • for everyone.
  • 00:39:05.020 --> 00:39:06.070
  • But because of that, I think that that is a lot of reticence.
  • 00:39:06.080 --> 00:39:09.020
  • You know, I grew up in a, what I've often described as "a
  • 00:39:09.030 --> 00:39:11.210
  • Pentecostal church on steroids."
  • 00:39:11.220 --> 00:39:14.000
  • And so, that was my background.
  • 00:39:14.010 --> 00:39:15.080
  • And yes, I saw a lot of things that I believe were completely
  • 00:39:15.090 --> 00:39:17.150
  • out of balance.
  • 00:39:17.160 --> 00:39:18.160
  • But there was also some great, great times.
  • 00:39:18.170 --> 00:39:20.240
  • There was also sometimes a great sense of God's presence.
  • 00:39:20.250 --> 00:39:23.130
  • And there was no doubt that with that, you know, that openness to
  • 00:39:23.140 --> 00:39:26.220
  • the Holy Spirit, it just provided such an openness also
  • 00:39:26.230 --> 00:39:29.080
  • to the Word of God.
  • 00:39:29.090 --> 00:39:31.040
  • And there was definitely, there was definitely significant
  • 00:39:31.050 --> 00:39:36.160
  • answers to prayer and amazing things as well.
  • 00:39:36.170 --> 00:39:39.050
  • So, you know, I definitely learned and saw a whole lot of
  • 00:39:39.060 --> 00:39:42.170
  • things that when I was gonna pastor a church myself, I knew
  • 00:39:42.180 --> 00:39:45.170
  • that we would be a little different than that.
  • 00:39:45.180 --> 00:39:48.010
  • But I don't want to also, just out of bad experience, you know,
  • 00:39:48.020 --> 00:39:51.110
  • just diss the whole idea of inviting the Holy Spirit into
  • 00:39:51.120 --> 00:39:55.270
  • our lives.
  • 00:39:55.280 --> 00:39:57.020
  • And, you know, the fact that we are the temple of the Holy
  • 00:39:57.030 --> 00:39:59.060
  • Spirit, we don't want empty temples.
  • 00:39:59.070 --> 00:40:01.240
  • You know, we need to invite the Holy Spirit into his own house,
  • 00:40:01.250 --> 00:40:05.030
  • which, these days, is us.
  • 00:40:05.040 --> 00:40:07.220
  • We are the temple of the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:40:07.230 --> 00:40:10.010
  • Ben: Do you think there's a part--?
  • 00:40:10.020 --> 00:40:11.120
  • You know, the Bible says that "where the Spirit of the Lord
  • 00:40:11.130 --> 00:40:13.090
  • is, there's freedom," that there's a something even, I
  • 00:40:13.100 --> 00:40:15.290
  • don't know, it's just, like, a cause for anxiety about the idea
  • 00:40:16.000 --> 00:40:18.130
  • of freedom, of, "What's that look like?"
  • 00:40:18.140 --> 00:40:21.030
  • You know, what's that do in our lives?
  • 00:40:21.040 --> 00:40:23.160
  • I don't know.
  • 00:40:23.170 --> 00:40:24.120
  • Karalee: Oh, I think that's true.
  • 00:40:24.130 --> 00:40:25.220
  • I think people just don't--the nature of the Holy Spirit is a
  • 00:40:25.230 --> 00:40:28.090
  • bit mysterious.
  • 00:40:28.100 --> 00:40:30.010
  • And I think that's--I think there's purpose in that.
  • 00:40:30.020 --> 00:40:34.070
  • There's purpose in God kind of saying, "Just open yourself up
  • 00:40:34.080 --> 00:40:36.170
  • to whatever you have for me, and allow me to lead you with the
  • 00:40:36.180 --> 00:40:40.220
  • Holy Spirit."
  • 00:40:40.230 --> 00:40:41.280
  • And I think that mystery can be maybe what frightens people
  • 00:40:41.290 --> 00:40:44.000
  • sometimes.
  • 00:40:44.010 --> 00:40:46.060
  • Brian: Like, you know, King Saul, when he was anointed king,
  • 00:40:46.070 --> 00:40:49.190
  • the fact that the Spirit of God came upon him and literally
  • 00:40:49.200 --> 00:40:53.130
  • turned him into another man, that's powerful.
  • 00:40:53.140 --> 00:40:55.230
  • And then it says three verses later, as he walked off, after
  • 00:40:55.240 --> 00:40:58.260
  • being anointed king and he went pretty well to face what was
  • 00:40:58.270 --> 00:41:01.270
  • ahead of him, the Bible says, "God changed his heart."
  • 00:41:01.280 --> 00:41:05.280
  • And it also says, "There were signs following."
  • 00:41:05.290 --> 00:41:07.270
  • And so, in other words, there was incredible evidence that he
  • 00:41:07.280 --> 00:41:10.070
  • was, like, a different person.
  • 00:41:10.080 --> 00:41:12.210
  • And I love the fact God can do that, that we can be the same
  • 00:41:12.220 --> 00:41:15.100
  • people, but the Spirit of God can do something so strong in
  • 00:41:15.110 --> 00:41:19.020
  • our lives that it's like a different person.
  • 00:41:19.030 --> 00:41:21.110
  • You have a boldness you never had.
  • 00:41:21.120 --> 00:41:22.230
  • You have a confidence you never have.
  • 00:41:22.240 --> 00:41:24.080
  • Maybe you have a wisdom you never had.
  • 00:41:24.090 --> 00:41:26.140
  • You know, the Holy Spirit gives you the gift of wisdom.
  • 00:41:26.150 --> 00:41:29.050
  • And so, man, I say, "Well, I'm gonna stay open to the Holy
  • 00:41:29.060 --> 00:41:31.150
  • Spirit, for sure."
  • 00:41:31.160 --> 00:41:32.260
  • Ben: Absolutely, you talked about how the Holy Spirit broke
  • 00:41:32.270 --> 00:41:37.020
  • a new confidence and created a boldness in you.
  • 00:41:37.030 --> 00:41:40.210
  • Was that quite an instant thing or was it something that kinda
  • 00:41:40.220 --> 00:41:43.190
  • took place over a course of time?
  • 00:41:43.200 --> 00:41:45.240
  • Brian: No, there was definitely a process to that.
  • 00:41:45.250 --> 00:41:50.190
  • But all I know, though, is through the Spirit of God
  • 00:41:50.200 --> 00:41:53.060
  • working in my life, I'm not that guy who was so fearful of
  • 00:41:53.070 --> 00:41:56.140
  • speaking to 50 people that I got in a car and drove in the other
  • 00:41:56.150 --> 00:41:59.100
  • direction.
  • 00:41:59.110 --> 00:42:00.200
  • And I think without the Spirit of God in my life, without his
  • 00:42:00.210 --> 00:42:03.150
  • anointing on my life, I still think that maybe that would have
  • 00:42:03.160 --> 00:42:08.050
  • been a boundary, a barrier I just could never have crossed.
  • 00:42:08.060 --> 00:42:11.040
  • So, yeah, I just find too, someone who's been around for a
  • 00:42:11.050 --> 00:42:17.020
  • long time the church life, serving Jesus, I find it is too
  • 00:42:17.030 --> 00:42:22.050
  • easy to presume on the Holy Spirit, to just forget how
  • 00:42:22.060 --> 00:42:25.000
  • available to us he actually is.
  • 00:42:25.010 --> 00:42:30.180
  • Do you think all Christians can be guilty of that?
  • 00:42:30.190 --> 00:42:34.050
  • Karalee: Absolutely, absolutely, I honestly, like I
  • 00:42:34.060 --> 00:42:37.100
  • said tonight-- Ben: My wife's a better
  • 00:42:37.110 --> 00:42:39.020
  • Christian than me, so-- Karalee: No, I felt like
  • 00:42:39.030 --> 00:42:41.260
  • tonight, I felt, like, God say, "Don't get familiar.
  • 00:42:41.270 --> 00:42:44.150
  • Just keep pressing in and keep, you know, asking me for more
  • 00:42:44.160 --> 00:42:47.230
  • and for what's next and for something new."
  • 00:42:47.240 --> 00:42:50.050
  • 'Cause I think, you know, the Scriptures say, "God's always
  • 00:42:50.060 --> 00:42:52.110
  • doing something new."
  • 00:42:52.120 --> 00:42:53.240
  • And that is something we should eagerly be looking for.
  • 00:42:53.250 --> 00:42:56.240
  • Ben: I love too just that we created this space today, you
  • 00:42:56.250 --> 00:43:00.100
  • know, just to kind of create room for God to move and to put
  • 00:43:00.110 --> 00:43:03.070
  • focus and attention on the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:43:03.080 --> 00:43:07.120
  • And you could feel, like, in the room, just people's lean in to
  • 00:43:07.130 --> 00:43:09.250
  • what God was doing, and I thought it was really beautiful.
  • 00:43:09.260 --> 00:43:13.210
  • Karalee: Yeah, it was.
  • 00:43:13.220 --> 00:43:15.220
  • Brian: I think people have a hunger for God.
  • 00:43:16.270 --> 00:43:18.250
  • And we can think, in a world that is so secular
  • 00:43:18.260 --> 00:43:21.210
  • and where atheism is so strong, that that's not there.
  • 00:43:21.220 --> 00:43:25.130
  • But my experience, everywhere I go, is people have
  • 00:43:25.140 --> 00:43:27.200
  • a deep hunger for God.
  • 00:43:27.210 --> 00:43:30.010
  • as you know.
  • 00:43:35.060 --> 00:43:36.120
  • You work, or rather, you study in a very secular place on a
  • 00:43:36.130 --> 00:43:40.080
  • very secular campus in a very secular university.
  • 00:43:40.090 --> 00:43:44.090
  • And so people underestimate people's hunger.
  • 00:43:44.100 --> 00:43:47.220
  • Some people say it's a hunger for spirituality, but I think
  • 00:43:47.230 --> 00:43:50.290
  • it's deeper than that.
  • 00:43:51.000 --> 00:43:52.030
  • I think people have a hunger for God.
  • 00:43:52.040 --> 00:43:53.290
  • And we can think, in a world that is so secular and where
  • 00:43:54.000 --> 00:43:57.200
  • atheism is so strong, that that's not there.
  • 00:43:57.210 --> 00:44:00.180
  • But my experience, everywhere I go, is people have a deep hunger
  • 00:44:00.190 --> 00:44:03.120
  • for God.
  • 00:44:03.130 --> 00:44:05.030
  • And it's only the Holy Spirit, you know, who can draw people
  • 00:44:05.040 --> 00:44:08.040
  • ultimately towards God.
  • 00:44:08.050 --> 00:44:10.080
  • I think that's one of the most beautiful things that he does
  • 00:44:10.090 --> 00:44:12.140
  • every service we have.
  • 00:44:12.150 --> 00:44:13.210
  • After I spoke this message that we're talking about right now,
  • 00:44:13.220 --> 00:44:16.130
  • gave an invitation for people to give their lives to Christ.
  • 00:44:16.140 --> 00:44:20.130
  • And people only can connect with God if the Holy Spirit first
  • 00:44:20.140 --> 00:44:24.170
  • draws them.
  • 00:44:24.180 --> 00:44:25.220
  • And so, just to think about that, that oftentimes, the
  • 00:44:25.230 --> 00:44:28.020
  • invisible Holy Spirit, he's drawing us towards the Lord.
  • 00:44:28.030 --> 00:44:32.150
  • He's drawing us towards himself.
  • 00:44:32.160 --> 00:44:34.180
  • And yeah, the Holy Spirit, he may be invisible, but he's like
  • 00:44:34.190 --> 00:44:38.110
  • wind.
  • 00:44:38.120 --> 00:44:39.180
  • You can't see it, but you can certainly experience its impact
  • 00:44:39.190 --> 00:44:42.280
  • in your life.
  • 00:44:42.290 --> 00:44:44.070
  • Karalee: I pray that that would be, like, our testimony,
  • 00:44:44.080 --> 00:44:47.070
  • that people would walk into our home, and to our churches, and
  • 00:44:47.080 --> 00:44:50.100
  • to our lives, you know, and meet them in classrooms, and in our
  • 00:44:50.110 --> 00:44:54.030
  • workplace, and just sense the power of the Holy Spirit in our
  • 00:44:54.040 --> 00:44:57.190
  • lives.
  • 00:44:57.200 --> 00:44:58.270
  • I think that's--it's powerful, incredibly powerful, and it is
  • 00:44:58.280 --> 00:45:02.030
  • what draws people to Jesus and to the Father.
  • 00:45:02.040 --> 00:45:06.100
  • Brian: What conversations do we have--?
  • 00:45:06.110 --> 00:45:08.100
  • I'm not asking you a direct question here, don't wanna put
  • 00:45:08.110 --> 00:45:10.180
  • you on the spot.
  • 00:45:10.190 --> 00:45:11.230
  • But imagine the conversations that we all have that we
  • 00:45:11.240 --> 00:45:13.230
  • wouldn't have if we remembered that the Holy Spirit is in close
  • 00:45:13.240 --> 00:45:17.160
  • fellowship with us.
  • 00:45:17.170 --> 00:45:19.250
  • Karalee: It's a convicting thought, it is.
  • 00:45:19.260 --> 00:45:22.020
  • 'Cause, you know, what conversations would you have?
  • 00:45:22.030 --> 00:45:23.250
  • What places wouldn't you go?
  • 00:45:23.260 --> 00:45:24.290
  • What, you know, even music wouldn't you listen to and
  • 00:45:25.000 --> 00:45:27.230
  • television shows wouldn't you turn on if you just left room
  • 00:45:27.240 --> 00:45:30.200
  • always for the Holy Spirit and reminded yourself that he's just
  • 00:45:30.210 --> 00:45:34.070
  • with you, 'cause he is?
  • 00:45:34.080 --> 00:45:36.050
  • Brian: Well, you know, they say that about couples that are
  • 00:45:36.060 --> 00:45:37.270
  • dating, "Always leave room for the Holy Spirit."
  • 00:45:37.280 --> 00:45:39.270
  • Karalee: Yeah, that's right.
  • 00:45:39.280 --> 00:45:40.230
  • all: [laughing]
  • 00:45:40.240 --> 00:45:43.000
  • Karalee: Have a Bible width's in between.
  • 00:45:43.010 --> 00:45:44.260
  • Ben: Yeah, we need to bring that back, I think, in the youth
  • 00:45:44.270 --> 00:45:46.190
  • ministry, a big plaque, you know?
  • 00:45:46.200 --> 00:45:49.130
  • That's a great idea.
  • 00:45:49.140 --> 00:45:52.010
  • Brian: I think it's always good to talk to you guys, and to
  • 00:45:52.020 --> 00:45:54.020
  • talk about the Holy Spirit is, in particular, great.
  • 00:45:54.030 --> 00:45:57.220
  • You've always got a lot of good things to say.
  • 00:45:57.230 --> 00:46:00.220
  • And I pray as a church that we're not fearful to be a
  • 00:46:00.230 --> 00:46:04.210
  • church, known as a church that's open to the Holy Spirit, and to
  • 00:46:04.220 --> 00:46:08.060
  • live lives that we were not afraid to be defined because of
  • 00:46:08.070 --> 00:46:11.160
  • our openness to the Holy Spirit and to not just have an
  • 00:46:11.170 --> 00:46:16.030
  • expectation to see the power of the Holy Spirit, thank God he
  • 00:46:16.040 --> 00:46:19.130
  • does move in power, but for us to really have an openness for
  • 00:46:19.140 --> 00:46:22.280
  • the Standby, the one who wants close fellowship, to bring him
  • 00:46:22.290 --> 00:46:27.120
  • into our prayer life, into our everyday life, and really have
  • 00:46:27.130 --> 00:46:30.170
  • an expectation that we will have the Holy Spirit bring counsel
  • 00:46:30.180 --> 00:46:34.030
  • into our most vexing situations, and stand up for us and be an
  • 00:46:34.040 --> 00:46:38.160
  • Advocate when it feels like the world is against us.
  • 00:46:38.170 --> 00:46:42.020
  • Man, I praise God for the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:46:42.030 --> 00:46:44.130
  • And well, I want to encourage you, keep an openness
  • 00:46:44.140 --> 00:46:47.290
  • to the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:46:48.000 --> 00:46:49.060
  • And maybe, the Holy Spirit, he's kind of a distant part of your
  • 00:46:49.070 --> 00:46:51.290
  • life, but you can bring him right into your life.
  • 00:46:52.000 --> 00:46:56.180
  • God is three in one.
  • 00:46:56.190 --> 00:46:58.280
  • Maybe you know about God the Father.
  • 00:46:58.290 --> 00:47:00.280
  • You have an awe there and you have a love for Jesus.
  • 00:47:00.290 --> 00:47:03.280
  • But let's not squeeze out the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:47:03.290 --> 00:47:06.050
  • He is so powerful when it comes to what he can do in your life.
  • 00:47:06.060 --> 00:47:10.040
  • And ultimately, he can make you strong so that then, in turn,
  • 00:47:10.050 --> 00:47:13.200
  • you can be who God wants to make you and what he wants you to do,
  • 00:47:13.210 --> 00:47:17.270
  • remembering the Bible says that "he will make you strong for
  • 00:47:17.280 --> 00:47:22.080
  • himself."
  • 00:47:22.090 --> 00:47:23.200
  • Ultimately, it's all about us having the strength in our
  • 00:47:23.210 --> 00:47:27.050
  • service of King Jesus.
  • 00:47:27.060 --> 00:47:28.140
  • Be blessed, thanks again.
  • 00:47:28.150 --> 00:47:30.150
  • 00:47:31.040 --> 00:47:41.040
  • Our Father everlasting
  • 00:47:43.130 --> 00:47:46.080
  • the all creating one
  • 00:47:46.090 --> 00:47:50.290
  • God Almighty
  • 00:47:51.000 --> 00:47:56.140
  • Through your Holy Spirit
  • 00:47:56.150 --> 00:47:59.270
  • conceiving Christ the Son
  • 00:47:59.280 --> 00:48:04.140
  • Jesus our Savior
  • 00:48:04.150 --> 00:48:09.280
  • I believe in God our Father
  • 00:48:09.290 --> 00:48:13.020
  • I believe in Christ the Son
  • 00:48:13.030 --> 00:48:16.120
  • I believe in the Holy Spirit
  • 00:48:16.130 --> 00:48:19.270
  • Our God is three in one
  • 00:48:19.280 --> 00:48:23.110
  • I believe
  • 00:48:23.120 --> 00:48:24.130
  • in the resurrection
  • 00:48:24.140 --> 00:48:26.170
  • that we will rise again
  • 00:48:26.180 --> 00:48:30.070
  • For I believe
  • 00:48:30.080 --> 00:48:32.090
  • in the name of Jesus Matt Crocker: Come on, do you
  • 00:48:32.100 --> 00:48:37.160
  • believe in the name tonight?
  • 00:48:39.180 --> 00:48:44.040
  • Thank you, Jesus.
  • 00:48:44.050 --> 00:48:47.080
  • Our Judge and our Defender.
  • 00:48:47.090 --> 00:48:49.110
  • 00:48:50.050 --> 00:48:51.080
  • Our Judge and our Defender
  • 00:48:51.090 --> 00:48:53.230
  • suffered and crucified
  • 00:48:53.240 --> 00:48:58.120
  • Forgiveness is in you
  • 00:48:58.130 --> 00:49:04.060
  • Descended into darkness
  • 00:49:04.070 --> 00:49:07.130
  • you rose in glorious life
  • 00:49:07.140 --> 00:49:12.040
  • Forever seated high
  • 00:49:12.050 --> 00:49:17.050
  • I believe in God our Father
  • 00:49:17.060 --> 00:49:20.160
  • I believe in Christ the Son
  • 00:49:20.170 --> 00:49:24.050
  • I believe in the Holy Spirit
  • 00:49:24.060 --> 00:49:27.190
  • Our God is three in one
  • 00:49:27.200 --> 00:49:31.020
  • I believe
  • 00:49:31.030 --> 00:49:31.290
  • in the resurrection
  • 00:49:32.000 --> 00:49:34.120
  • that we will rise again
  • 00:49:34.130 --> 00:49:37.250
  • For I believe
  • 00:49:37.260 --> 00:49:39.290
  • in the name of Jesus
  • 00:49:40.000 --> 00:49:47.190
  • I believe in you
  • 00:49:47.200 --> 00:49:53.120
  • I believe you rose again
  • 00:49:53.130 --> 00:50:00.050
  • I believe that
  • 00:50:00.060 --> 00:50:04.040
  • Jesus Christ is Lord
  • 00:50:04.050 --> 00:50:09.000
  • Matt: Come on, sing it like you believe it tonight,
  • 00:50:09.010 --> 00:50:10.290
  • I believe.
  • 00:50:11.000 --> 00:50:12.110
  • 00:50:12.120 --> 00:50:13.280
  • Yes I believe in you
  • 00:50:13.290 --> 00:50:18.210
  • I believe, Lord
  • 00:50:18.220 --> 00:50:20.180
  • I believe you rose again
  • 00:50:20.190 --> 00:50:27.050
  • I believe that Jesus Christ
  • 00:50:27.060 --> 00:50:33.270
  • is Lord
  • 00:50:33.280 --> 00:50:41.290
  • I believe in God our Father
  • 00:50:42.000 --> 00:50:45.070
  • I believe in Christ the Son

  • I believe in the Holy Spirit

  • Our God is three in one
  • 00:50:52.090 --> 00:50:55.150
  • I believe
  • 00:50:55.160 --> 00:50:56.140
  • in the resurrection
  • 00:50:56.150 --> 00:50:58.230
  • that we will rise again
  • 00:50:58.240 --> 00:51:02.060
  • For I believe
  • 00:51:02.070 --> 00:51:04.110
  • in the name of Jesus
  • 00:51:04.120 --> 00:51:09.060
  • I believe in God our Father
  • 00:51:09.070 --> 00:51:12.110
  • I believe in Christ the Son
  • 00:51:12.120 --> 00:51:15.200
  • I believe in the Holy Spirit
  • 00:51:15.210 --> 00:51:19.010
  • Our God is three in one
  • 00:51:19.020 --> 00:51:22.170
  • I believe
  • 00:51:22.180 --> 00:51:23.120
  • in the resurrection
  • 00:51:23.130 --> 00:51:25.280
