  • Looking for a ray of light
  • 00:00:09.260 --> 00:00:12.190
  • Looking for something better than this
  • 00:00:12.200 --> 00:00:21.050
  • Oh, so tired of the black and white
  • 00:00:21.060 --> 00:00:24.100
  • longing for prism light
  • 00:00:24.110 --> 00:00:28.130
  • Oh, the bliss
  • 00:00:28.140 --> 00:00:33.070
  • Flowing at the speed of light
  • 00:00:33.080 --> 00:00:35.220
  • Was a color in the night
  • 00:00:35.230 --> 00:00:39.030
  • Moving at the speed of light
  • 00:00:39.040 --> 00:00:41.170
  • Was a color in the night
  • 00:00:41.180 --> 00:00:44.120
  • Joy unspeakable and full of colors
  • 00:00:44.130 --> 00:00:49.270
  • Found a hope so bright and clear
  • 00:00:49.280 --> 00:00:55.270
  • Living in the realm of grace so vivid
  • 00:00:55.280 --> 00:01:01.190
  • Our Savior's radiance so very near to me
  • 00:01:01.200 --> 00:01:07.200
  • male announcer: Even though Paul faced opposition
  • 00:01:11.030 --> 00:01:12.160
  • in spreading the gospel, he's still rejoiced
  • 00:01:12.170 --> 00:01:14.170
  • that the gospel was being preached.
  • 00:01:14.180 --> 00:01:16.170
  • Today on "Connect With Skip Heitzig," Skip shares
  • 00:01:16.180 --> 00:01:18.150
  • how you can have the same attitude of Paul
  • 00:01:18.160 --> 00:01:21.090
  • and live a gospel-centered life.
  • 00:01:21.100 --> 00:01:23.150
  • Skip Heitzig: Not only were they jealous,
  • 00:01:26.060 --> 00:01:27.180
  • they were a contentious group.
  • 00:01:27.190 --> 00:01:30.140
  • Look at the next word.
  • 00:01:30.150 --> 00:01:32.140
  • "Some indeed preached Christ from envy," that's jealousy,
  • 00:01:32.150 --> 00:01:35.290
  • "and strife."
  • 00:01:36.000 --> 00:01:40.020
  • Now, that describes somebody who has an argumentative person,
  • 00:01:40.030 --> 00:01:43.130
  • that's what strife means when somebody stirs up a conflict,
  • 00:01:43.140 --> 00:01:45.220
  • argumentative.
  • 00:01:45.230 --> 00:01:47.150
  • Do you know any people like that?
  • 00:01:47.160 --> 00:01:49.050
  • They just, you're around, they're always stirring up
  • 00:01:49.060 --> 00:01:51.190
  • a conflict, always argumentative.
  • 00:01:51.200 --> 00:01:54.180
  • Some people thrive on being argumentative.
  • 00:01:54.190 --> 00:01:59.280
  • In fact, some people are known more for what
  • 00:01:59.290 --> 00:02:03.020
  • they are against rather than what they are for.
  • 00:02:03.030 --> 00:02:06.180
  • You never quite know what they're for,
  • 00:02:06.190 --> 00:02:08.180
  • you just know they're against a lot.
  • 00:02:08.190 --> 00:02:11.140
  • That's strife.
  • 00:02:11.150 --> 00:02:13.160
  • They exist to slam others, and they were slamming
  • 00:02:13.170 --> 00:02:17.060
  • Paul the apostle.
  • 00:02:17.070 --> 00:02:19.120
  • I have a colleague in the ministry who I've known
  • 00:02:19.130 --> 00:02:22.080
  • for years, I respect, and he was speaking about and answering
  • 00:02:22.090 --> 00:02:27.120
  • questions that young ministers were asking him
  • 00:02:27.130 --> 00:02:30.160
  • about the ministry.
  • 00:02:30.170 --> 00:02:32.030
  • And they said, "What is the most difficult experience
  • 00:02:32.040 --> 00:02:34.050
  • you've ever had in ministry?"
  • 00:02:34.060 --> 00:02:35.290
  • And he said, "Well, there are two.
  • 00:02:36.000 --> 00:02:37.090
  • Number one is when people who know truth,
  • 00:02:37.100 --> 00:02:39.280
  • walk away from it.
  • 00:02:39.290 --> 00:02:42.190
  • When somebody who should know better,
  • 00:02:42.200 --> 00:02:44.240
  • there are Christians who've been exposed to truth,
  • 00:02:44.250 --> 00:02:47.010
  • been exposed to the Word, bring their Bibles read along,
  • 00:02:47.020 --> 00:02:49.240
  • suddenly, one day they, for whatever reason,
  • 00:02:49.250 --> 00:02:52.010
  • walk away completely from living for Christ."
  • 00:02:52.020 --> 00:02:56.050
  • He said, "But the second," and he was speaking about ministers
  • 00:02:56.060 --> 00:02:59.140
  • who were coming against him.
  • 00:02:59.150 --> 00:03:01.290
  • He said, "Those who live to attack others in the ministry."
  • 00:03:02.000 --> 00:03:09.020
  • It's like they falsely accuse, and they live just
  • 00:03:09.030 --> 00:03:14.150
  • to stir up trouble.
  • 00:03:14.160 --> 00:03:17.080
  • So, envy and strife, we do not know how
  • 00:03:17.090 --> 00:03:19.170
  • the strife was expressed, we can only suppose.
  • 00:03:19.180 --> 00:03:25.280
  • Maybe there was a group of people saying,
  • 00:03:25.290 --> 00:03:28.060
  • "Well, you know, Paul the apostle,
  • 00:03:28.070 --> 00:03:29.210
  • there must be sin in his life, that's why he's in jail because
  • 00:03:29.220 --> 00:03:34.000
  • God would be more faithful and not allow him to be in prison
  • 00:03:34.010 --> 00:03:36.290
  • unless something's wrong with him."
  • 00:03:37.000 --> 00:03:41.060
  • Or maybe they were saying, "Well, Paul hasn't tapped
  • 00:03:41.070 --> 00:03:44.150
  • into the victorious, Holy Spirit filled life.
  • 00:03:44.160 --> 00:03:48.180
  • If he did, if he had, then he wouldn't be in prison,
  • 00:03:48.190 --> 00:03:52.070
  • he'd free like we have-- like we are."
  • 00:03:52.080 --> 00:03:55.260
  • But we do know they were jealous,
  • 00:03:55.270 --> 00:03:57.150
  • and we do know they were contentious.
  • 00:03:57.160 --> 00:03:59.220
  • Something else they were, they were selfish.
  • 00:03:59.230 --> 00:04:03.090
  • If you go down to verse 16, he amplifies it further.
  • 00:04:03.100 --> 00:04:06.030
  • He says, "The former," that is the first group,
  • 00:04:06.040 --> 00:04:09.140
  • the guys against him, "the former preach Christ
  • 00:04:09.150 --> 00:04:13.200
  • from selfish ambition."
  • 00:04:13.210 --> 00:04:17.240
  • Very interesting term.
  • 00:04:17.250 --> 00:04:19.170
  • It is a political term that speaks about a politician
  • 00:04:19.180 --> 00:04:23.100
  • canvassing for office, using negative campaigns,
  • 00:04:23.110 --> 00:04:28.290
  • putting other people down, to make himself look better,
  • 00:04:29.000 --> 00:04:33.130
  • to promote himself.
  • 00:04:33.140 --> 00:04:35.120
  • So, here's a group of people putting Paul down to puff
  • 00:04:35.130 --> 00:04:40.060
  • themselves up like a politician might do
  • 00:04:40.070 --> 00:04:42.170
  • in a negative campaign ad.
  • 00:04:42.180 --> 00:04:45.030
  • They got some perverted pleasure by slamming Paul so that
  • 00:04:45.040 --> 00:04:50.010
  • they could make other people think they are much better.
  • 00:04:50.020 --> 00:04:54.280
  • This is not new in the New Testament.
  • 00:04:54.290 --> 00:04:57.010
  • We know that John the apostle spoke about a guy
  • 00:04:57.020 --> 00:05:01.110
  • named Diotrephes, if you know your Bible,
  • 00:05:01.120 --> 00:05:03.260
  • 3 John, verse 9, that little letter toward
  • 00:05:03.270 --> 00:05:07.020
  • the end of the New Testament.
  • 00:05:07.030 --> 00:05:08.180
  • He says, "Diotrephes loves to have the preeminence."
  • 00:05:08.190 --> 00:05:15.130
  • He loves to have the preeminence.
  • 00:05:15.140 --> 00:05:17.110
  • In other words, he wants to dominate people.
  • 00:05:17.120 --> 00:05:19.200
  • He's a control freak.
  • 00:05:19.210 --> 00:05:22.010
  • Diotrephes loves to have the preeminence among them.
  • 00:05:22.020 --> 00:05:26.180
  • Keep this in mind, next time you hear gossip,
  • 00:05:26.190 --> 00:05:31.110
  • and there are there are unfortunately too many people,
  • 00:05:31.120 --> 00:05:36.230
  • even in the church, who love to spread gossip.
  • 00:05:36.240 --> 00:05:40.040
  • When you hear gossip, somebody's ego is being exalted.
  • 00:05:40.050 --> 00:05:45.060
  • It's usually shared because, "I know this and you don't,
  • 00:05:45.070 --> 00:05:50.080
  • and I'm concerned."
  • 00:05:50.090 --> 00:05:54.010
  • An ego is being exalted as that information is being divulged.
  • 00:05:54.020 --> 00:05:59.060
  • A man wrapped up in himself makes a very small package,
  • 00:05:59.070 --> 00:06:04.220
  • and selfish ambition was part and parcel of what was wrong
  • 00:06:04.230 --> 00:06:09.180
  • with these people.
  • 00:06:09.190 --> 00:06:10.280
  • They were selfish.
  • 00:06:10.290 --> 00:06:12.130
  • So, they're jealous, they're contentious, they're selfish.
  • 00:06:12.140 --> 00:06:14.020
  • Paul mentions them, not by name.
  • 00:06:14.030 --> 00:06:16.060
  • He doesn't want to make too much out of it.
  • 00:06:16.070 --> 00:06:19.010
  • He doesn't want to be self-serving,
  • 00:06:19.020 --> 00:06:20.260
  • but he mentions what they did.
  • 00:06:20.270 --> 00:06:22.250
  • But there's a fourth thing, they were malicious.
  • 00:06:22.260 --> 00:06:26.160
  • Notice in verse 16, "The former preached Christ
  • 00:06:26.170 --> 00:06:29.190
  • from selfish ambition, not sincerely," now watch this,
  • 00:06:29.200 --> 00:06:34.280
  • "supposing, or hoping, to add affliction to my chains."
  • 00:06:34.290 --> 00:06:42.270
  • Now, Paul is revealing their motivation.
  • 00:06:42.280 --> 00:06:45.240
  • "They're doing all this, they are this way,
  • 00:06:45.250 --> 00:06:48.070
  • they're pushing me down to pull themselves up and here's why,
  • 00:06:48.080 --> 00:06:53.220
  • they want to add affliction to my bonds."
  • 00:06:53.230 --> 00:06:59.140
  • What does that mean?
  • 00:06:59.150 --> 00:07:00.260
  • The word "affliction" is a common
  • 00:07:00.270 --> 00:07:02.160
  • New Testament word thlipsis.
  • 00:07:02.170 --> 00:07:03.280
  • Thlipsis is a word that means pressure or trial,
  • 00:07:03.290 --> 00:07:06.280
  • but it literally means an irritation.
  • 00:07:06.290 --> 00:07:10.060
  • It means friction.
  • 00:07:10.070 --> 00:07:11.270
  • It is the irritation caused by the rubbing of an object
  • 00:07:11.280 --> 00:07:16.010
  • over another object.
  • 00:07:16.020 --> 00:07:18.260
  • Now notice it says Paul says, "They want to add affliction,
  • 00:07:18.270 --> 00:07:24.040
  • or irritation, to my chains."
  • 00:07:24.050 --> 00:07:28.290
  • For two years, Paul was in chains.
  • 00:07:29.000 --> 00:07:32.280
  • I know you've heard that. I know we've read that.
  • 00:07:32.290 --> 00:07:35.130
  • We've discussed that, but I just want you to think
  • 00:07:35.140 --> 00:07:37.150
  • of what that means.
  • 00:07:37.160 --> 00:07:39.030
  • That means for two years, Paul couldn't take
  • 00:07:39.040 --> 00:07:42.100
  • a potty break alone.
  • 00:07:42.110 --> 00:07:46.260
  • He had no freedom.
  • 00:07:46.270 --> 00:07:48.280
  • He had no isolation. He had no privacy.
  • 00:07:48.290 --> 00:07:51.160
  • He couldn't eat a meal alone.
  • 00:07:51.170 --> 00:07:54.060
  • He couldn't have a conversation in that rented house
  • 00:07:54.070 --> 00:07:57.090
  • in Rome for two years.
  • 00:07:57.100 --> 00:07:59.080
  • He was chained to a guard.
  • 00:07:59.090 --> 00:08:02.250
  • That means there was a shackle around his wrist with a chain
  • 00:08:02.260 --> 00:08:05.120
  • attached to the shackle of another soldier who only
  • 00:08:05.130 --> 00:08:08.030
  • occupied that place for a few hours at a time.
  • 00:08:08.040 --> 00:08:11.030
  • But Paul, 24 hours a day, seven days a week,
  • 00:08:11.040 --> 00:08:13.180
  • two years, he had a chain.
  • 00:08:13.190 --> 00:08:15.230
  • That means that that shackle would irritate his skin and
  • 00:08:15.240 --> 00:08:19.060
  • his bones, and scabs would develop and it would bleed
  • 00:08:19.070 --> 00:08:23.100
  • and it would thicken, et cetera.
  • 00:08:23.110 --> 00:08:26.160
  • You get the picture.
  • 00:08:26.170 --> 00:08:28.100
  • So, he says, "The reason these people are this way toward me is
  • 00:08:28.110 --> 00:08:33.020
  • they want to add to the irritation
  • 00:08:33.030 --> 00:08:35.170
  • that I already have in my chains."
  • 00:08:35.180 --> 00:08:38.160
  • That is their motivation.
  • 00:08:38.170 --> 00:08:40.190
  • They don't want to evangelize the loss.
  • 00:08:40.200 --> 00:08:42.140
  • They don't want to feed the flock.
  • 00:08:42.150 --> 00:08:43.270
  • They're not really concerned for the church,
  • 00:08:43.280 --> 00:08:45.260
  • even though they're saying, "Well, I'm saying this
  • 00:08:45.270 --> 00:08:47.230
  • about Paul 'cause I'm really concerned for the church."
  • 00:08:47.240 --> 00:08:51.040
  • Paul said," that's not the truth.
  • 00:08:51.050 --> 00:08:52.150
  • The truth is they have one motivation,
  • 00:08:52.160 --> 00:08:54.140
  • they want to add irritation to my already irritable situation
  • 00:08:54.150 --> 00:08:59.000
  • of being in chains."
  • 00:08:59.010 --> 00:09:03.010
  • Now please, understand again, these are preachers.
  • 00:09:03.020 --> 00:09:07.150
  • Paul says they preach Christ.
  • 00:09:07.160 --> 00:09:10.020
  • They are Christians, they are Christian preachers.
  • 00:09:10.030 --> 00:09:12.130
  • They are not anti-Christ, but they are anti Paul
  • 00:09:12.140 --> 00:09:18.230
  • and they are anti Paul with a vengeance.
  • 00:09:18.240 --> 00:09:21.200
  • And I can't think of a worse reason to preach
  • 00:09:21.210 --> 00:09:24.210
  • a message than that.
  • 00:09:24.220 --> 00:09:28.000
  • I can't think of a worse motivation to write a book
  • 00:09:28.010 --> 00:09:30.210
  • or have a blog site than that.
  • 00:09:30.220 --> 00:09:33.180
  • "Let's just make life hard for Paul the apostle."
  • 00:09:33.190 --> 00:09:37.110
  • You know, sort of like scorpions.
  • 00:09:37.120 --> 00:09:38.280
  • You know that if you leave scorpions together alone,
  • 00:09:38.290 --> 00:09:41.150
  • they'll kill themselves and eat themselves?
  • 00:09:41.160 --> 00:09:45.000
  • A guy did an experiment with 100 scorpions in a huge glass jar
  • 00:09:45.010 --> 00:09:48.210
  • and a few days only 14 survived.
  • 00:09:48.220 --> 00:09:51.100
  • They had killed the others and we're eating them.
  • 00:09:51.110 --> 00:09:55.110
  • There was even a pregnant scorpion in that jar that killed
  • 00:09:55.120 --> 00:09:59.060
  • and start it eating her young as soon as they were born.
  • 00:09:59.070 --> 00:10:02.230
  • One of those babies escaped on the mother's back
  • 00:10:02.240 --> 00:10:05.080
  • and eventually killed her.
  • 00:10:05.090 --> 00:10:09.270
  • Any leader who has led anything, even Christian leaders
  • 00:10:09.280 --> 00:10:16.030
  • in Christian churches know that every church,
  • 00:10:16.040 --> 00:10:18.160
  • every group, has the Tate family among them.
  • 00:10:18.170 --> 00:10:22.210
  • Every church has the Tates.
  • 00:10:22.220 --> 00:10:25.060
  • There's old man Dick-Tate, who wants to run everything
  • 00:10:25.070 --> 00:10:29.260
  • while Uncle Ro-Tate tries to change everything.
  • 00:10:29.270 --> 00:10:34.000
  • Their sister Agi-Tate stirs up plenty of trouble with help from
  • 00:10:34.010 --> 00:10:38.080
  • her husband, Irri-Tate.
  • 00:10:38.090 --> 00:10:42.030
  • And whenever new projects are suggested,
  • 00:10:42.040 --> 00:10:44.100
  • Hezi-Tate and his wife Vege-Tate want to wait till next year.
  • 00:10:44.110 --> 00:10:50.040
  • Then there's an Imi-tate who wants her church to be
  • 00:10:50.050 --> 00:10:55.120
  • like all the others.
  • 00:10:55.130 --> 00:10:56.250
  • Devas-Tate provides the voice of duty well Poten-tate
  • 00:10:56.260 --> 00:11:00.210
  • wants to be a big shot.
  • 00:11:00.220 --> 00:11:04.010
  • And of course, there's the black sheep of the family,
  • 00:11:04.020 --> 00:11:06.270
  • Ampu-Tate who has completely cut himself off from every church.
  • 00:11:06.280 --> 00:11:13.210
  • Anybody who's a leader knows those people exist,
  • 00:11:13.220 --> 00:11:16.020
  • so what do you do?
  • 00:11:16.030 --> 00:11:17.230
  • I suggest you do what Paul does.
  • 00:11:17.240 --> 00:11:20.100
  • You don't spend all your time worried about them, you pivot.
  • 00:11:20.110 --> 00:11:23.120
  • Yes, you identify the troublemakers,
  • 00:11:23.130 --> 00:11:26.230
  • but then you ratify the truth makers.
  • 00:11:26.240 --> 00:11:29.170
  • And notice what Paul says in verse 15.
  • 00:11:29.180 --> 00:11:31.110
  • "Some indeed preach Christ from envy and strife,
  • 00:11:31.120 --> 00:11:35.230
  • and some--"
  • 00:11:35.240 --> 00:11:39.290
  • I want to go, "Ah, it feels better already."
  • 00:11:40.000 --> 00:11:43.140
  • He's pivoting here.
  • 00:11:43.150 --> 00:11:44.240
  • And some also from goodwill.
  • 00:11:44.250 --> 00:11:49.090
  • Verse 17 further describes them.
  • 00:11:49.100 --> 00:11:52.090
  • "But the latter out of love, knowing that I am appointed
  • 00:11:52.100 --> 00:11:56.030
  • for the defense of the gospel."
  • 00:11:56.040 --> 00:12:00.050
  • This is the silver lining in the dark cloud of contention,
  • 00:12:00.060 --> 00:12:04.130
  • and Paul has found it.
  • 00:12:04.140 --> 00:12:06.230
  • Yes, in any group, there's gonna be irritate,
  • 00:12:06.240 --> 00:12:08.160
  • and agitate, and vegetate, but there's also gonna be advocate
  • 00:12:08.170 --> 00:12:12.140
  • and celebrate, and you want to find those people.
  • 00:12:12.150 --> 00:12:17.220
  • And here's what Paul does.
  • 00:12:17.230 --> 00:12:20.110
  • He says, "Yeah, there are some like this,
  • 00:12:20.120 --> 00:12:23.000
  • but then there are some like that."
  • 00:12:23.010 --> 00:12:28.070
  • You see, rather than just focusing on the smudge,
  • 00:12:28.080 --> 00:12:31.110
  • that is on the white linen garment, Paul says,
  • 00:12:31.120 --> 00:12:34.270
  • "Yeah, but there's a lot of white linen garment
  • 00:12:34.280 --> 00:12:37.070
  • around that smudge."
  • 00:12:37.080 --> 00:12:39.020
  • It's not all a smudge.
  • 00:12:39.030 --> 00:12:40.290
  • There is a smudge, I grant you that.
  • 00:12:41.000 --> 00:12:42.290
  • I can identify the troublemakers,
  • 00:12:43.000 --> 00:12:44.210
  • but there's a lot of others who are not like that.
  • 00:12:44.220 --> 00:12:48.230
  • That's part of the strategy.
  • 00:12:48.240 --> 00:12:50.120
  • Starve the problem, and feed the solution.
  • 00:12:50.130 --> 00:12:54.230
  • Find those who love you, who love the work of God in you,
  • 00:12:54.240 --> 00:12:58.040
  • and run with them.
  • 00:12:58.050 --> 00:13:00.190
  • Ratify them, encourage them, empower them, build with them.
  • 00:13:00.200 --> 00:13:04.160
  • And just keep running ahead of the irritates,
  • 00:13:04.170 --> 00:13:08.150
  • and the agitates, and the amputates.
  • 00:13:08.160 --> 00:13:11.080
  • Their voice will diminish as you go further ahead.
  • 00:13:11.090 --> 00:13:15.290
  • Now, I'm gonna share something with you that will probably
  • 00:13:16.000 --> 00:13:18.160
  • be shocking to you.
  • 00:13:18.170 --> 00:13:20.030
  • Did you know that Paul the apostle probably lost his life
  • 00:13:20.040 --> 00:13:28.100
  • as a result of troublemaking Christians in Rome.
  • 00:13:28.110 --> 00:13:34.290
  • I want that to settle on your hearts.
  • 00:13:35.000 --> 00:13:37.010
  • Paul probably lost his life because of the trouble
  • 00:13:37.020 --> 00:13:41.100
  • caused by troublemaking Christians in Rome.
  • 00:13:41.110 --> 00:13:46.120
  • You say now, wait a minute, I always heard that
  • 00:13:46.130 --> 00:13:48.030
  • it was Caesar Nero that killed Paul the Apostle,
  • 00:13:48.040 --> 00:13:52.130
  • beheaded him.
  • 00:13:52.140 --> 00:13:53.260
  • Well, that's true.
  • 00:13:53.270 --> 00:13:55.100
  • Here's the problem, we have very little information
  • 00:13:55.110 --> 00:13:58.040
  • about the death of Paul from early church records.
  • 00:13:58.050 --> 00:14:00.230
  • They're very silent on it.
  • 00:14:00.240 --> 00:14:02.150
  • We just have a snippet here or there,
  • 00:14:02.160 --> 00:14:04.190
  • but it would seem like the envy, the jealousy of many Christians
  • 00:14:04.200 --> 00:14:07.260
  • in Rome, denounced Paul before Caesar Nero,
  • 00:14:07.270 --> 00:14:14.070
  • which added the weight to the death sentence.
  • 00:14:14.080 --> 00:14:18.140
  • You say, "Well, how do you know that?"
  • 00:14:18.150 --> 00:14:19.240
  • Well, there are several sources I've discovered,
  • 00:14:19.250 --> 00:14:21.280
  • but I'm gonna to share two with you.
  • 00:14:21.290 --> 00:14:24.100
  • One comes from 2 Timothy chapter 1,
  • 00:14:24.110 --> 00:14:26.210
  • a guy by the name of Onesiphorus,
  • 00:14:26.220 --> 00:14:30.090
  • how's that for a name?
  • 00:14:30.100 --> 00:14:31.270
  • Don't name your son Onesiphorus, though he was a good guy.
  • 00:14:31.280 --> 00:14:34.010
  • It'll be hard in school.
  • 00:14:34.020 --> 00:14:36.270
  • Onesiphorus came to visit Paul while he was in Rome in prison.
  • 00:14:36.280 --> 00:14:42.110
  • The problem is, once he gets to Rome,
  • 00:14:42.120 --> 00:14:45.000
  • it seems like nobody will tell him where Paul the Apostle is.
  • 00:14:45.010 --> 00:14:51.130
  • They don't want to tell him.
  • 00:14:51.140 --> 00:14:53.040
  • Maybe they don't know, or maybe they don't want to tell them,
  • 00:14:53.050 --> 00:14:55.220
  • but listen to what it says 2 Timothy chapter 1 Paul writes,
  • 00:14:55.230 --> 00:14:58.180
  • "May the Lord show special kindness to Onesiphorus and
  • 00:14:58.190 --> 00:15:02.150
  • all his family because he often visited and encouraged me.
  • 00:15:02.160 --> 00:15:07.220
  • He was never ashamed of me because I was in prison.
  • 00:15:07.230 --> 00:15:11.280
  • When he came to Rome, he searched everywhere
  • 00:15:11.290 --> 00:15:16.060
  • until he found me."
  • 00:15:16.070 --> 00:15:19.190
  • So, he came to Rome, nobody told him where Paul was,
  • 00:15:19.200 --> 00:15:22.240
  • even though he kept open house for two years,
  • 00:15:22.250 --> 00:15:24.150
  • people came and visited him,
  • 00:15:24.160 --> 00:15:25.280
  • and he influenced church leaders, we're told.
  • 00:15:25.290 --> 00:15:30.090
  • But he had to search for him until he could find him.
  • 00:15:30.100 --> 00:15:33.200
  • And Paul made a special note, he wasn't ashamed of me
  • 00:15:33.210 --> 00:15:35.250
  • being in prison, which indicates some were.
  • 00:15:35.260 --> 00:15:39.020
  • They saw this as a defeat, an embarrassment.
  • 00:15:39.030 --> 00:15:41.260
  • But then a second source comes from a letter
  • 00:15:41.270 --> 00:15:45.040
  • that was found from 90 A.D.
  • 00:15:45.050 --> 00:15:47.220
  • written by a man named Clement of Rome
  • 00:15:47.230 --> 00:15:50.150
  • to the church of Corinth.
  • 00:15:50.160 --> 00:15:52.140
  • And in the book, in the letter from Clement,
  • 00:15:52.150 --> 00:15:55.290
  • Clement addresses jealousy and envy among God's people
  • 00:15:56.000 --> 00:15:59.220
  • that have led to the destruction, death,
  • 00:15:59.230 --> 00:16:01.210
  • or trouble caused by other of God's people,
  • 00:16:01.220 --> 00:16:06.000
  • and he gets seven examples of that through history
  • 00:16:06.010 --> 00:16:08.140
  • and one of the examples is Paul.
  • 00:16:08.150 --> 00:16:11.290
  • Clement writes this, and I quote,
  • 00:16:12.000 --> 00:16:13.200
  • "By reason of jealousy and strife,
  • 00:16:13.210 --> 00:16:16.150
  • Paul, by his example, pointed out the prize
  • 00:16:16.160 --> 00:16:19.200
  • of patient endurance.
  • 00:16:19.210 --> 00:16:22.120
  • And when he had borne his testimony before the rulers,
  • 00:16:22.130 --> 00:16:25.210
  • he departed from this world and went to heaven."
  • 00:16:25.220 --> 00:16:29.200
  • The point Clement makes is that envy among Christians
  • 00:16:29.210 --> 00:16:34.000
  • somehow helped bring the execution
  • 00:16:34.010 --> 00:16:37.060
  • brought on by Caesar Nero.
  • 00:16:37.070 --> 00:16:40.210
  • If you still have further doubt, you have only to read
  • 00:16:40.220 --> 00:16:43.180
  • 2 Timothy chapter 4.
  • 00:16:43.190 --> 00:16:45.120
  • It's the end of Paul's life.
  • 00:16:45.130 --> 00:16:46.250
  • It's right before he died Paul says this,
  • 00:16:46.260 --> 00:16:48.170
  • listen to Paul, "At my first defense,
  • 00:16:48.180 --> 00:16:51.070
  • no one stood with me, but all forsook me."
  • 00:16:51.080 --> 00:16:58.120
  • It breaks my heart to just read that.
  • 00:16:58.130 --> 00:17:00.210
  • This is Paul the stinkin' apostle.
  • 00:17:00.220 --> 00:17:05.030
  • "At my first offense, nobody stood with me,
  • 00:17:05.040 --> 00:17:08.010
  • everybody forsook me."
  • 00:17:08.020 --> 00:17:09.110
  • But then he quickly adds, "But the Lord stood with me."
  • 00:17:09.120 --> 00:17:14.040
  • He was utterly alone in terms of human fellowship at that point.
  • 00:17:14.050 --> 00:17:18.290
  • So, Paul identifies the troublemakers,
  • 00:17:19.000 --> 00:17:24.050
  • tells us that they are jealous, contentious, selfish, malicious,
  • 00:17:24.060 --> 00:17:26.260
  • but then he pivots and ratifies the truth makers.
  • 00:17:26.270 --> 00:17:31.040
  • But here's the third part of this strategy
  • 00:17:31.050 --> 00:17:33.070
  • that best of all magnify the true message.
  • 00:17:33.080 --> 00:17:37.230
  • Look at verse 18.
  • 00:17:37.240 --> 00:17:39.040
  • Look at look how Paul answers this.
  • 00:17:39.050 --> 00:17:40.250
  • He says, "What then?"
  • 00:17:40.260 --> 00:17:44.080
  • You know that means, that little question what then?
  • 00:17:44.090 --> 00:17:46.200
  • You know how we would translate that?
  • 00:17:46.210 --> 00:17:48.040
  • So what?
  • 00:17:48.050 --> 00:17:49.150
  • So what? What does it matter?
  • 00:17:50.150 --> 00:17:53.060
  • What then, only that in every way,
  • 00:17:53.070 --> 00:17:55.260
  • whether in pretense, they're pretending to be pure
  • 00:17:55.270 --> 00:18:01.190
  • in their motives, but they're not.
  • 00:18:01.200 --> 00:18:03.190
  • In pretense, or in truth, Christ is preached,
  • 00:18:03.200 --> 00:18:08.090
  • and in this I rejoice, yes, and will rejoice.
  • 00:18:08.100 --> 00:18:14.110
  • Man, you cannot stop this dude.
  • 00:18:14.120 --> 00:18:17.260
  • He is in jail, he has been in jail,
  • 00:18:17.270 --> 00:18:20.080
  • he will be in jail for a total of two years.
  • 00:18:20.090 --> 00:18:23.000
  • He will be released, brought back into prison,
  • 00:18:23.010 --> 00:18:25.050
  • he will be executed.
  • 00:18:25.060 --> 00:18:26.290
  • He is in jail.
  • 00:18:27.000 --> 00:18:28.140
  • He is persecuted by unbelievers.
  • 00:18:28.150 --> 00:18:30.090
  • He is picked on by believers and he goes so what.
  • 00:18:30.100 --> 00:18:34.270
  • And then he says, "I rejoice."
  • 00:18:34.280 --> 00:18:38.080
  • You know, I don't know how many of us would have the courage
  • 00:18:38.090 --> 00:18:41.060
  • to say, "You know, there's a lot of people that are against me,"
  • 00:18:41.070 --> 00:18:44.190
  • and then say so what?
  • 00:18:44.200 --> 00:18:46.170
  • Most of us would write "Shame on them.
  • 00:18:46.180 --> 00:18:50.040
  • Don't they know that I am the great Paul the Apostle who had
  • 00:18:50.050 --> 00:18:53.110
  • a vision of the living Christ, who will write
  • 00:18:53.120 --> 00:18:55.280
  • 13 New Testament books?
  • 00:18:55.290 --> 00:18:57.220
  • Don't they know who I am?"
  • 00:18:57.230 --> 00:19:00.090
  • He goes, "So what?
  • 00:19:00.100 --> 00:19:03.050
  • I rejoice and will rejoice."
  • 00:19:03.060 --> 00:19:06.080
  • Almost like this defiant, "I'm not gonna let anybody
  • 00:19:06.090 --> 00:19:08.270
  • steal my joy," and amazing reaction, an amazing reaction.
  • 00:19:08.280 --> 00:19:16.190
  • Now, I don't want you to think in looking at this because
  • 00:19:16.200 --> 00:19:20.280
  • a lot of people do think this, that Paul came to a point
  • 00:19:20.290 --> 00:19:25.010
  • where he was just this stone statue of a man impervious
  • 00:19:25.020 --> 00:19:29.080
  • to the criticisms of others.
  • 00:19:29.090 --> 00:19:31.150
  • It just rolled off his back, I don't believe that.
  • 00:19:31.160 --> 00:19:36.180
  • He was a person with emotions, and heart, and feelings,
  • 00:19:36.190 --> 00:19:40.240
  • and he was wounded very deeply by these people.
  • 00:19:40.250 --> 00:19:46.240
  • Well, what he is saying is, "I'm not gonna let mean people
  • 00:19:46.250 --> 00:19:49.010
  • rob me of joy."
  • 00:19:49.020 --> 00:19:52.020
  • In fact, I have found cause and reason to rejoice
  • 00:19:52.030 --> 00:19:54.240
  • and that is this, the message of the gospel even when preach
  • 00:19:54.250 --> 00:19:58.160
  • with bad motives, they're preaching the right message.
  • 00:19:58.170 --> 00:20:04.090
  • Right message, wrong motives.
  • 00:20:04.100 --> 00:20:06.080
  • I'm not gonna worry about the motives,
  • 00:20:06.090 --> 00:20:08.050
  • that's between them and God.
  • 00:20:08.060 --> 00:20:09.210
  • I'm gonna worry about the message and that is the gospel.
  • 00:20:09.220 --> 00:20:12.180
  • Now, here's the great truth, the great truth in all of this
  • 00:20:12.190 --> 00:20:15.180
  • can be boiled down to the irreducible minimum,
  • 00:20:15.190 --> 00:20:18.070
  • which is this, the power is in the message,
  • 00:20:18.080 --> 00:20:21.210
  • not in the messenger.
  • 00:20:21.220 --> 00:20:25.070
  • The power is in the message, not in the messenger.
  • 00:20:25.080 --> 00:20:28.020
  • If somebody tampers with the message, go at them.
  • 00:20:28.030 --> 00:20:32.280
  • If people tamper with the messenger, ignore them.
  • 00:20:32.290 --> 00:20:38.070
  • Now, let's just talk about that for a moment.
  • 00:20:38.080 --> 00:20:40.170
  • If people mess and tamper with the message,
  • 00:20:40.180 --> 00:20:42.270
  • go at 'em, Paul did.
  • 00:20:42.280 --> 00:20:44.270
  • Paul wrote to the Galatians and he said,
  • 00:20:44.280 --> 00:20:46.200
  • "I'm noticing that people among you are preaching a different
  • 00:20:46.210 --> 00:20:48.140
  • gospel, a different gospel, the one that is the true gospel."
  • 00:20:48.150 --> 00:20:54.040
  • And he goes, "I want you to know if we or an angel from heaven
  • 00:20:54.050 --> 00:20:57.190
  • preach to you any other gospel than the you ever received,
  • 00:20:57.200 --> 00:21:00.200
  • let him be cursed below the lowest hell."
  • 00:21:00.210 --> 00:21:03.230
  • How's that for confrontation?
  • 00:21:03.240 --> 00:21:06.180
  • So, you mess with the message, I'm gonna come at you.
  • 00:21:06.190 --> 00:21:09.240
  • You mess with the messenger, I'm gonna ignore you.
  • 00:21:09.250 --> 00:21:13.270
  • What then? So what, what does it matter?
  • 00:21:13.280 --> 00:21:16.090
  • I rejoice that the message is being preached.
  • 00:21:16.100 --> 00:21:22.050
  • So, Paul has his comrades, those are partners in the gospel.
  • 00:21:22.060 --> 00:21:26.100
  • He rejoices because of them, but Paul has his critics,
  • 00:21:26.110 --> 00:21:30.060
  • detractors of Paul.
  • 00:21:30.070 --> 00:21:33.280
  • He rejoices in spite of them, why?
  • 00:21:33.290 --> 00:21:41.090
  • Because they're brothers, that's why.
  • 00:21:41.100 --> 00:21:44.130
  • Simple as that, they're brothers.
  • 00:21:44.140 --> 00:21:47.050
  • Yes, they're ornery. Yes, they're stupid.
  • 00:21:47.060 --> 00:21:49.160
  • Yes, they're irritating, but they're brothers,
  • 00:21:49.170 --> 00:21:54.050
  • they're brothers in Christ.
  • 00:21:54.060 --> 00:21:55.230
  • So, Paul is saying, "I'm not called to defend myself,
  • 00:21:55.240 --> 00:21:57.250
  • I'm called to defend the gospel.
  • 00:21:57.260 --> 00:22:00.130
  • I'm not called to protect myself,
  • 00:22:00.140 --> 00:22:02.060
  • I'm called to proclaim the gospel."
  • 00:22:02.070 --> 00:22:05.240
  • Now, I want to close on a couple of thoughts.
  • 00:22:05.250 --> 00:22:10.020
  • We often make too much over what divides us and not enough
  • 00:22:10.030 --> 00:22:15.270
  • over what unites us.
  • 00:22:15.280 --> 00:22:18.270
  • I know, I know we have to use discernment.
  • 00:22:18.280 --> 00:22:21.040
  • I know we have to be careful about what the truth is,
  • 00:22:21.050 --> 00:22:24.110
  • the true gospel like Galatians chapter 1.
  • 00:22:24.120 --> 00:22:27.020
  • But sometimes I fear that we are known more
  • 00:22:27.030 --> 00:22:30.220
  • for what we're against than what we're for.
  • 00:22:30.230 --> 00:22:32.200
  • And some people actually like being that way.
  • 00:22:32.210 --> 00:22:35.220
  • They like be known for what they're against,
  • 00:22:35.230 --> 00:22:37.190
  • and they are known for what they're against.
  • 00:22:37.200 --> 00:22:41.280
  • But sometimes I think we make too much of it.
  • 00:22:41.290 --> 00:22:44.000
  • Here's the truth, God reserves the right to use people
  • 00:22:44.010 --> 00:22:47.170
  • who disagree with you.
  • 00:22:47.180 --> 00:22:50.210
  • Newsflash, God reserves the right to use people
  • 00:22:50.220 --> 00:22:54.240
  • who disagree with you.
  • 00:22:54.250 --> 00:23:00.080
  • There's people who disagree with you on the Rapture,
  • 00:23:00.090 --> 00:23:02.120
  • there's people who disagree with me on the Rapture,
  • 00:23:02.130 --> 00:23:04.070
  • or spiritual gifts, or a number of things
  • 00:23:04.080 --> 00:23:05.260
  • that aren't the real crux crucial matters of the gospel,
  • 00:23:05.270 --> 00:23:09.260
  • death, burial, resurrection, vicarious atonement,
  • 00:23:09.270 --> 00:23:12.040
  • and all the central stuff.
  • 00:23:12.050 --> 00:23:15.250
  • So what?
  • 00:23:15.260 --> 00:23:18.250
  • I began with talking about denominations
  • 00:23:18.260 --> 00:23:21.110
  • and changing lightbulbs.
  • 00:23:21.120 --> 00:23:23.220
  • Let me might tell you a true story about denominations.
  • 00:23:23.230 --> 00:23:26.290
  • In the late 1700s, John Wesley, you know,
  • 00:23:27.000 --> 00:23:30.070
  • John Wesley, one of the great leaders in England at the time.
  • 00:23:30.080 --> 00:23:34.240
  • Wesley was concerned because there were so many denominations
  • 00:23:34.250 --> 00:23:38.100
  • springing up.
  • 00:23:38.110 --> 00:23:41.020
  • And this always bothers people who study church history
  • 00:23:41.030 --> 00:23:44.230
  • because, you know, the church history is history of people
  • 00:23:44.240 --> 00:23:48.140
  • not getting along and dividing.
  • 00:23:48.150 --> 00:23:50.190
  • So, somebody in the group doesn't like the group,
  • 00:23:50.200 --> 00:23:52.260
  • and leaves the group, and starts their own group.
  • 00:23:52.270 --> 00:23:54.150
  • And as their group grows, somebody in that group doesn't
  • 00:23:54.160 --> 00:23:56.220
  • like that group and they start another group.
  • 00:23:56.230 --> 00:23:58.060
  • And that group grows and somebody in that group
  • 00:23:58.070 --> 00:23:59.290
  • may get together with the first group and start another group.
  • 00:24:00.020 --> 00:24:03.140
  • Those are denominations.
  • 00:24:03.150 --> 00:24:04.250
  • Well, this bothered him.
  • 00:24:04.260 --> 00:24:06.250
  • So, one night John Wesley goes to bed, has a dream
  • 00:24:06.260 --> 00:24:09.120
  • and in his dream, he is ushered to the gates of hell.
  • 00:24:09.130 --> 00:24:13.120
  • And in his dream, he asked the question,
  • 00:24:13.130 --> 00:24:15.170
  • "Are there any Presbyterians here?"
  • 00:24:15.180 --> 00:24:19.080
  • And the answer comes back, "Yes, there are."
  • 00:24:19.090 --> 00:24:23.180
  • He shocked he goes, "Are there any Baptists here?"
  • 00:24:23.190 --> 00:24:25.230
  • He goes, "Yes, there are."
  • 00:24:25.240 --> 00:24:28.030
  • "Are there any Methodists, are there any Episcopalians?"
  • 00:24:28.040 --> 00:24:30.250
  • "Yes, yes, yes."
  • 00:24:30.260 --> 00:24:33.290
  • Well, he's troubled by this and immediately in his dream,
  • 00:24:34.000 --> 00:24:37.140
  • he's now ushered to the gates of heaven and he asked
  • 00:24:37.150 --> 00:24:39.220
  • the same set of questions.
  • 00:24:39.230 --> 00:24:41.080
  • "Are there any Presbyterians here?"
  • 00:24:41.090 --> 00:24:43.220
  • "No," was the answer.
  • 00:24:43.230 --> 00:24:47.100
  • "Are there any Baptists?" "No."
  • 00:24:47.110 --> 00:24:48.250
  • "Are there any Methodists?" "No."
  • 00:24:48.260 --> 00:24:50.050
  • "Any Episcopalians?" "No."
  • 00:24:50.060 --> 00:24:55.140
  • And he said, "No? Who then is inside?"
  • 00:24:55.150 --> 00:24:58.020
  • And this answer came back, "There are only Christians here.
  • 00:24:58.030 --> 00:25:02.060
  • There are only Christians here."
  • 00:25:02.070 --> 00:25:04.050
  • You don't get to heaven by being a Presbyterian,
  • 00:25:04.060 --> 00:25:05.290
  • a Baptist, Methodist, an Episcopalian, a Calvary-ite,
  • 00:25:06.000 --> 00:25:11.240
  • but by trust in Jesus's death, burial, and resurrection period,
  • 00:25:11.250 --> 00:25:19.090
  • and you are a Christian if you believe that,
  • 00:25:19.100 --> 00:25:23.180
  • and that message has changed your life.
  • 00:25:23.190 --> 00:25:26.040
  • 00:25:26.070 --> 00:25:30.140
  • announcer: Now, we want to tell you
  • 00:25:30.150 --> 00:25:31.240
  • about a resource that will help you experience
  • 00:25:31.250 --> 00:25:33.240
  • Jesus's great love for you like never before.
  • 00:25:33.250 --> 00:25:36.100
  • announcer: You've heard the phrase:
  • 00:25:42.100 --> 00:25:43.190
  • the beginning of the end.
  • 00:25:43.200 --> 00:25:44.290
  • Nowhere is that more fitting than the moment
  • 00:25:45.000 --> 00:25:46.110
  • humankind chose sin.
  • 00:25:46.120 --> 00:25:48.100
  • Adam's disobedience marked the beginning of the end
  • 00:25:48.110 --> 00:25:50.140
  • of our fellowship with God.
  • 00:25:50.150 --> 00:25:52.080
  • Fortunately, God planned for the end from the beginning,
  • 00:25:52.090 --> 00:25:55.020
  • and you can follow along the path of redemption
