  • In the parable of the wedding, the wedding feast, Luke chapter
  • 00:00:01.240 --> 00:00:05.170
  • 14, Jesus said, "Go out into the highways and hedges,
  • 00:00:05.180 --> 00:00:09.150
  • and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled."
  • 00:00:09.160 --> 00:00:15.000
  • There are never too many people in heaven, and it's our
  • 00:00:15.010 --> 00:00:18.020
  • opportunity to fill the house for eternity.
  • 00:00:18.030 --> 00:00:23.080
  • J.C. Ryle, Bishop Ryle, said, "The highest form of selfishness
  • 00:00:23.090 --> 00:00:27.230
  • is a man who is content to go to heaven alone."
  • 00:00:27.240 --> 00:00:30.290
  • So, through evangelism we have the opportunity to plant the
  • 00:00:31.000 --> 00:00:34.180
  • seed, to sow the seed of the gospel to those
  • 00:00:34.190 --> 00:00:38.020
  • who are literally standing in line to go to hell.
  • 00:00:38.030 --> 00:00:42.090
  • Skip: One cannot think of the word "evangelism" in our century
  • 00:00:46.290 --> 00:00:52.020
  • without thinking of the name of one person: Dr. Billy Graham.
  • 00:00:52.030 --> 00:00:58.210
  • And that is because Dr. Billy Graham has personally proclaimed
  • 00:00:58.220 --> 00:01:03.240
  • the gospel to more people in the world than any other person
  • 00:01:03.250 --> 00:01:07.260
  • who has ever lived, but there's an interesting story
  • 00:01:07.270 --> 00:01:12.100
  • about Dr. Graham when he was younger.
  • 00:01:12.110 --> 00:01:15.220
  • He was in a small town, and he was asking
  • 00:01:15.230 --> 00:01:18.180
  • directions to a post office.
  • 00:01:18.190 --> 00:01:21.270
  • He found a boy, and he said,
  • 00:01:21.280 --> 00:01:23.070
  • "Tell me how to get to the post office."
  • 00:01:23.080 --> 00:01:25.260
  • After getting directions from that boy, he then invited him
  • 00:01:25.270 --> 00:01:31.250
  • to come to his crusade that evening.
  • 00:01:31.260 --> 00:01:34.040
  • He says, "I'll be preaching. I invite you to come.
  • 00:01:34.050 --> 00:01:37.000
  • I'm gonna be telling everyone how to get to heaven."
  • 00:01:37.010 --> 00:01:42.020
  • The little boy smiled, and he said,
  • 00:01:42.030 --> 00:01:44.120
  • "I don't think I'll be coming.
  • 00:01:44.130 --> 00:01:46.130
  • You don't even know how to get to the post office."
  • 00:01:46.140 --> 00:01:50.180
  • That's a classic comeback.
  • 00:01:50.190 --> 00:01:55.110
  • Most of us know that the word "gospel" means good news.
  • 00:01:55.120 --> 00:01:58.290
  • It is the good news, it is the great news, it's the grand news,
  • 00:01:59.000 --> 00:02:03.120
  • it is, in fact, the world's best news ever, but what we must
  • 00:02:03.130 --> 00:02:10.050
  • guard against is that the gospel doesn't become our
  • 00:02:10.060 --> 00:02:13.210
  • best-kept secret, that we get the message out.
  • 00:02:13.220 --> 00:02:20.040
  • Some years back, a man was convicted for murder.
  • 00:02:20.050 --> 00:02:22.240
  • His name is John Currier.
  • 00:02:22.250 --> 00:02:24.190
  • He was sentenced to life in prison.
  • 00:02:24.200 --> 00:02:26.170
  • Later on, he was put on a work farm
  • 00:02:26.180 --> 00:02:28.230
  • outside of Nashville, Tennessee.
  • 00:02:28.240 --> 00:02:33.020
  • He served there 20 years.
  • 00:02:33.030 --> 00:02:36.050
  • Eventually his sentence was terminated and a letter was
  • 00:02:36.060 --> 00:02:40.140
  • sent, supposedly sent, to release him from prison.
  • 00:02:40.150 --> 00:02:45.220
  • He never got the message.
  • 00:02:45.230 --> 00:02:47.280
  • Whatever it was, something happened where the message
  • 00:02:47.290 --> 00:02:49.280
  • didn't get through to him, so he kept working
  • 00:02:49.290 --> 00:02:52.060
  • at that place for another 10 years.
  • 00:02:52.070 --> 00:02:54.030
  • Can you imagine?
  • 00:02:54.040 --> 00:02:55.180
  • Can you imagine getting or having sent the most important
  • 00:02:55.190 --> 00:02:59.160
  • message of your life and never getting the message?
  • 00:02:59.170 --> 00:03:03.110
  • It never gets delivered.
  • 00:03:03.120 --> 00:03:04.210
  • Year after year, you never get the message.
  • 00:03:04.220 --> 00:03:09.120
  • How did the early church deal with the message, the good news,
  • 00:03:09.130 --> 00:03:13.000
  • the gospel, God's best message ever?
  • 00:03:13.010 --> 00:03:15.240
  • How did they handle it? What did they do?
  • 00:03:15.250 --> 00:03:17.110
  • What was their relationship to the world around them?
  • 00:03:17.120 --> 00:03:21.070
  • We have already learned the last few weeks that they were,
  • 00:03:21.080 --> 00:03:24.220
  • number one, a learning church.
  • 00:03:24.230 --> 00:03:26.150
  • They devoted themselves to the apostles' doctrine, chapter 2,
  • 00:03:26.160 --> 00:03:29.040
  • verse 42, so they were a learning church.
  • 00:03:29.050 --> 00:03:33.010
  • Second, we have discovered they were a loving church.
  • 00:03:33.020 --> 00:03:36.110
  • They devoted themselves to the fellowship with one another.
  • 00:03:36.120 --> 00:03:39.270
  • So, they were a learning church, and they were a loving church,
  • 00:03:39.280 --> 00:03:43.080
  • and they were also a giving church.
  • 00:03:43.090 --> 00:03:47.040
  • In chapter 2, verse 45 and 46, they generously gave
  • 00:03:47.050 --> 00:03:52.090
  • of their time and talent and treasure.
  • 00:03:52.100 --> 00:03:53.240
  • They pooled their resources, and they made sure that everyone
  • 00:03:53.250 --> 00:03:57.100
  • was taken care of in their midst.
  • 00:03:57.110 --> 00:04:00.210
  • However, that is not a complete picture.
  • 00:04:00.220 --> 00:04:04.120
  • If we were to stop there, we would get the wrong impression
  • 00:04:04.130 --> 00:04:08.170
  • of what the church life was like, because everything
  • 00:04:08.180 --> 00:04:12.180
  • I just described describes their interior life,
  • 00:04:12.190 --> 00:04:17.000
  • not their exterior life.
  • 00:04:17.010 --> 00:04:19.110
  • We need another verse to balance it all out, and that is found in
  • 00:04:19.120 --> 00:04:23.170
  • verse 47, and, yes, once again we will look at one verse,
  • 00:04:23.180 --> 00:04:28.120
  • in fact one-half of one verse, verse 47.
  • 00:04:28.130 --> 00:04:33.260
  • The second statement says, "And the Lord added to
  • 00:04:33.270 --> 00:04:37.120
  • the church daily those who were being saved."
  • 00:04:37.130 --> 00:04:40.260
  • Now, that balances everything out.
  • 00:04:40.270 --> 00:04:44.130
  • Without that, we would get the wrong impression
  • 00:04:44.140 --> 00:04:47.190
  • of what they were like.
  • 00:04:47.200 --> 00:04:49.270
  • Without that verse, we might tend to think that they were
  • 00:04:49.280 --> 00:04:54.170
  • only interested in studying and praying
  • 00:04:54.180 --> 00:04:58.190
  • and hanging out with each other.
  • 00:04:58.200 --> 00:05:01.180
  • In fact, it would be a Christian ghetto without verse 47.
  • 00:05:01.190 --> 00:05:06.030
  • They would be all about themselves and not about the
  • 00:05:06.040 --> 00:05:09.260
  • world, but verse 47 tells us that there was
  • 00:05:09.270 --> 00:05:13.110
  • evangelism going on in their midst.
  • 00:05:13.120 --> 00:05:17.080
  • Now, we have a mission statement.
  • 00:05:17.090 --> 00:05:19.020
  • We've been exploring it the last several weeks, and we wanted
  • 00:05:19.030 --> 00:05:23.110
  • to show you the biblical underpinnings of
  • 00:05:23.120 --> 00:05:25.260
  • what we believe, that it is indeed
  • 00:05:25.270 --> 00:05:27.200
  • a biblical vision for God's people.
  • 00:05:27.210 --> 00:05:31.010
  • And so, by now you know it, and you've heard it so many times,
  • 00:05:31.020 --> 00:05:35.000
  • that we pursue the God who is passionately
  • 00:05:35.010 --> 00:05:37.150
  • pursuing a lost world.
  • 00:05:37.160 --> 00:05:39.260
  • We do that with one another through worship, by the Word,
  • 00:05:39.270 --> 00:05:43.150
  • to the world, to the world.
  • 00:05:43.160 --> 00:05:46.260
  • That's evangelism.
  • 00:05:46.270 --> 00:05:48.210
  • Evangelism happens when called-out ones
  • 00:05:48.220 --> 00:05:52.130
  • become sent-out ones.
  • 00:05:52.140 --> 00:05:56.000
  • Most of you know that the word "church" in the New Testament
  • 00:05:56.010 --> 00:05:58.270
  • is the Greek word ekklésia.
  • 00:05:58.280 --> 00:06:01.100
  • Jesus said, "I will build my church," ekklésia,
  • 00:06:01.110 --> 00:06:05.070
  • called-out ones.
  • 00:06:05.080 --> 00:06:08.160
  • Another term in the New Testament is sent-out ones,
  • 00:06:08.170 --> 00:06:13.070
  • apostolos or apostelló, to send out, apostle.
  • 00:06:13.080 --> 00:06:19.050
  • So when called-out ones become sent-out ones, you have
  • 00:06:19.060 --> 00:06:23.120
  • evangelism, and you cannot read the book of Acts without
  • 00:06:23.130 --> 00:06:28.000
  • discovering that the called-out ones over and over again became
  • 00:06:28.010 --> 00:06:32.240
  • sent-out ones all throughout Jerusalem and Judea and wherever
  • 00:06:32.250 --> 00:06:36.200
  • they were scattered, even in the midst of persecution.
  • 00:06:36.210 --> 00:06:40.090
  • I want you to notice a couple of those instances, so over in
  • 00:06:40.100 --> 00:06:43.130
  • chapter 4, verse 33 you'll notice it says, "And with great
  • 00:06:43.140 --> 00:06:49.040
  • power the apostles," the sent-out ones,
  • 00:06:49.050 --> 00:06:53.000
  • "gave witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus.
  • 00:06:53.010 --> 00:06:58.110
  • And great grace was upon them all."
  • 00:06:58.120 --> 00:07:01.210
  • Acts chapter 5, verse 42, "And daily in the temple,
  • 00:07:01.220 --> 00:07:05.190
  • and in every house, they did not cease teaching
  • 00:07:05.200 --> 00:07:10.120
  • and preaching Jesus as the Christ."
  • 00:07:10.130 --> 00:07:14.290
  • Now, Acts chapter 8 in verse 4, where the persecution
  • 00:07:15.000 --> 00:07:19.170
  • has now involved them all, they were scattered
  • 00:07:19.180 --> 00:07:22.260
  • everywhere because of it.
  • 00:07:22.270 --> 00:07:24.240
  • Acts 8, verse 4, "Those who were scattered went
  • 00:07:24.250 --> 00:07:28.070
  • everywhere preaching the word."
  • 00:07:28.080 --> 00:07:33.080
  • So, what have we discovered?
  • 00:07:33.090 --> 00:07:35.000
  • We've discovered that the worshipers became witnesses.
  • 00:07:35.010 --> 00:07:41.010
  • They were worshiping, but they were also witnessing.
  • 00:07:41.020 --> 00:07:44.120
  • They were praising, but they were also proclaiming.
  • 00:07:44.130 --> 00:07:48.230
  • So, if I were to give you a single sentence to describe the
  • 00:07:48.240 --> 00:07:52.180
  • early church's total activity, it would be "the early church
  • 00:07:52.190 --> 00:07:56.190
  • were saved souls wanting to see more souls saved."
  • 00:07:56.200 --> 00:08:02.280
  • They were saved souls wanting to see more souls saved.
  • 00:08:02.290 --> 00:08:08.220
  • Some of you may know that D.L. Moody was an evangelist.
  • 00:08:08.230 --> 00:08:11.230
  • Besides pastoring the Moody Church, he was an evangelist.
  • 00:08:11.240 --> 00:08:14.290
  • He loved to see souls saved, and he would often call people
  • 00:08:15.000 --> 00:08:18.060
  • to make a decision to follow Christ.
  • 00:08:18.070 --> 00:08:20.040
  • Well, not everybody in his church had that same passion as
  • 00:08:20.050 --> 00:08:24.160
  • he did, and in a sermon he said, "You know, sometimes the church
  • 00:08:24.170 --> 00:08:28.130
  • reminds me of firemen straightening pictures
  • 00:08:28.140 --> 00:08:32.020
  • on the walls of a burning house."
  • 00:08:32.030 --> 00:08:35.200
  • It's a ludicrous picture, right?
  • 00:08:35.210 --> 00:08:37.260
  • Firemen go in there, the house is burning down, and one pauses
  • 00:08:37.270 --> 00:08:40.070
  • and goes, "You know, that picture needs to be straightened
  • 00:08:40.080 --> 00:08:42.200
  • up a little bit, and I think it would--a different
  • 00:08:42.210 --> 00:08:45.010
  • color would be nice here."
  • 00:08:45.020 --> 00:08:47.040
  • Are you kidding? The house is burning down.
  • 00:08:47.050 --> 00:08:49.170
  • So, in a world that seems like it's burning down,
  • 00:08:49.180 --> 00:08:52.240
  • what ought the church be--to be doing?
  • 00:08:52.250 --> 00:08:55.190
  • What ought we to be like?
  • 00:08:55.200 --> 00:08:58.010
  • Well, we ought to be out giving the good news, the best news,
  • 00:08:58.020 --> 00:09:03.190
  • the great news, if indeed to us it is great.
  • 00:09:03.200 --> 00:09:08.250
  • Well, I'd like you to notice in verse 47 three aspects
  • 00:09:08.260 --> 00:09:14.040
  • of their work of evangelism.
  • 00:09:14.050 --> 00:09:16.050
  • First of all, it's a divine work.
  • 00:09:16.060 --> 00:09:18.120
  • Evangelism is a divine work.
  • 00:09:18.130 --> 00:09:20.090
  • Notice in verse 47 the words
  • 00:09:20.100 --> 00:09:22.050
  • "and the Lord added to the church."
  • 00:09:22.060 --> 00:09:26.060
  • It's God's business.
  • 00:09:26.070 --> 00:09:27.250
  • Let's call it the family business.
  • 00:09:27.260 --> 00:09:30.160
  • We're in the family of God. What's the family business?
  • 00:09:30.170 --> 00:09:33.190
  • This is the family business. The Lord added to the church.
  • 00:09:33.200 --> 00:09:38.030
  • Now I'd like you to go back just a couple of verses.
  • 00:09:38.040 --> 00:09:41.230
  • Look at verse 41.
  • 00:09:41.240 --> 00:09:44.270
  • Notice how it's written, "Three thousand souls
  • 00:09:44.280 --> 00:09:48.030
  • were added to them."
  • 00:09:48.040 --> 00:09:51.180
  • Who is the "them"?
  • 00:09:51.190 --> 00:09:54.190
  • The "them" is the 120 Christians who had met in the upper room.
  • 00:09:54.200 --> 00:09:59.030
  • That's the "them."
  • 00:09:59.040 --> 00:10:00.220
  • Now you have 3.000 souls added to the 120, so you have 3.120.
  • 00:10:00.230 --> 00:10:06.060
  • That's easy math, but notice it says in verse 41,
  • 00:10:06.070 --> 00:10:10.210
  • "Three thousand souls were added to them."
  • 00:10:10.220 --> 00:10:14.180
  • That's put in the passive voice, meaning that there was someone
  • 00:10:14.190 --> 00:10:20.250
  • or something apart from them doing the adding to them, and
  • 00:10:20.260 --> 00:10:26.140
  • now we find in verse 47 who the agent doing the work is.
  • 00:10:26.150 --> 00:10:30.280
  • It is God who's doing the adding.
  • 00:10:30.290 --> 00:10:32.220
  • The Lord added, so evangelism is God's work.
  • 00:10:32.230 --> 00:10:36.240
  • He uses his people to do it, he uses their witness to do it,
  • 00:10:36.250 --> 00:10:40.090
  • but he does the work.
  • 00:10:40.100 --> 00:10:43.040
  • Romans chapter 8, verse 30, "Moreover whom he predestined,
  • 00:10:43.050 --> 00:10:47.220
  • these he also called; and whom he called,
  • 00:10:47.230 --> 00:10:51.140
  • these he also justified; and whom he justified,
  • 00:10:51.150 --> 00:10:55.010
  • these he also glorified."
  • 00:10:55.020 --> 00:10:57.140
  • Five times in a single verse we are told that from beginning
  • 00:10:57.150 --> 00:11:01.170
  • to end salvation is God's work, so then evangelism
  • 00:11:01.180 --> 00:11:07.180
  • is our cooperation with God's operation.
  • 00:11:07.190 --> 00:11:12.190
  • It is human cooperation with the divine intention.
  • 00:11:12.200 --> 00:11:17.060
  • And what is the divine intention?
  • 00:11:17.070 --> 00:11:19.010
  • To save people, right?
  • 00:11:19.020 --> 00:11:21.160
  • It says in 2 Peter 3, "God is not willing that any should
  • 00:11:21.170 --> 00:11:24.120
  • perish, but that all should come to repentance."
  • 00:11:24.130 --> 00:11:27.040
  • 00:11:28.150 --> 00:11:37.280
  • 00:11:38.100 --> 00:11:41.020
  • You were lost with heavy hearts,
  • 00:11:41.140 --> 00:11:48.170
  • broken and alone,
  • 00:11:48.180 --> 00:11:55.040
  • living lives of silent pain,
  • 00:11:55.050 --> 00:12:02.100
  • longing for something more.
  • 00:12:02.110 --> 00:12:07.190
  • Through the darkness the light has come,
  • 00:12:10.010 --> 00:12:16.120
  • to the broken the light has come
  • 00:12:16.130 --> 00:12:23.090
  • to lead us, to save us,
  • 00:12:23.100 --> 00:12:26.250
  • to steal our death and break the curse.
  • 00:12:26.260 --> 00:12:31.170
  • The light has come,
  • 00:12:35.130 --> 00:12:42.060
  • the light has come.
  • 00:12:42.070 --> 00:12:48.100
  • For our sin the Savior bled,
  • 00:12:50.090 --> 00:12:57.060
  • burdens washed away.
  • 00:12:57.070 --> 00:13:02.050
  • Through the Son we draw near,
  • 00:13:03.250 --> 00:13:10.260
  • standing in endless grace.
  • 00:13:10.270 --> 00:13:15.170
  • Through the darkness the light has come,
  • 00:13:18.140 --> 00:13:25.020
  • to the broken the light has come
  • 00:13:25.030 --> 00:13:31.290
  • to lead us, to save us,
  • 00:13:32.000 --> 00:13:35.140
  • to steal our death and break the curse.

  • I want you to kinda get this in your theological
  • 00:14:44.160 --> 00:14:46.180
  • heads and hearts.
  • 00:14:46.190 --> 00:14:49.210
  • Evangelism is the intersection, the coming together,
  • 00:14:49.220 --> 00:14:53.180
  • the intersection of divine predestination
  • 00:14:53.190 --> 00:14:59.130
  • and human volition.
  • 00:14:59.140 --> 00:15:02.050
  • See, we know the Bible says that God selects people.
  • 00:15:02.060 --> 00:15:05.160
  • He predestines them to be saved.
  • 00:15:05.170 --> 00:15:07.250
  • You're chosen in Christ, Ephesians 1,
  • 00:15:07.260 --> 00:15:09.200
  • before the foundations of the earth.
  • 00:15:09.210 --> 00:15:11.150
  • That's a biblical doctrine.
  • 00:15:11.160 --> 00:15:13.140
  • Most of us know that and believe that.
  • 00:15:13.150 --> 00:15:15.170
  • God chooses, and it happens before we even came on the
  • 00:15:15.180 --> 00:15:18.020
  • scene, but then there is the human aspect, the choice,
  • 00:15:18.030 --> 00:15:22.110
  • the cooperation with God, the human volition,
  • 00:15:22.120 --> 00:15:25.040
  • the decision to follow Christ.
  • 00:15:25.050 --> 00:15:26.270
  • Evangelism is the intersection of divine predestination with
  • 00:15:26.280 --> 00:15:32.090
  • human choice, human volition, so that brings up a question:
  • 00:15:32.100 --> 00:15:40.050
  • should we actually invite people to come to Christ?
  • 00:15:40.060 --> 00:15:45.180
  • Should there be an invitation?
  • 00:15:45.190 --> 00:15:47.080
  • Should we ask people to make a decision,
  • 00:15:47.090 --> 00:15:49.230
  • ask them to receive Jesus?
  • 00:15:49.240 --> 00:15:52.110
  • I bring up the question because the hard-core,
  • 00:15:52.120 --> 00:15:54.200
  • ardent Calvinist would say, "Absolutely not.
  • 00:15:54.210 --> 00:15:58.140
  • That's God's work. It is a sovereign work.
  • 00:15:58.150 --> 00:16:00.220
  • You don't wanna prod or push people into it.
  • 00:16:00.230 --> 00:16:03.280
  • You let God do that."
  • 00:16:03.290 --> 00:16:07.050
  • I was preaching one time at a different location,
  • 00:16:07.060 --> 00:16:11.140
  • and I called people forward, prayed with them,
  • 00:16:11.150 --> 00:16:14.220
  • had an altar call, and after the service somebody
  • 00:16:14.230 --> 00:16:17.190
  • approached me and said, "You shouldn't do that.
  • 00:16:17.200 --> 00:16:19.170
  • You shouldn't do an altar call.
  • 00:16:19.180 --> 00:16:20.290
  • You put too much onus on the person making the choice
  • 00:16:21.000 --> 00:16:24.020
  • rather than the sovereign God doing the calling."
  • 00:16:24.030 --> 00:16:26.210
  • I said, "Well, can't sovereign God choose and use the means
  • 00:16:26.220 --> 00:16:31.100
  • of a preacher giving them the gospel and calling them
  • 00:16:31.110 --> 00:16:34.180
  • to make a choice?
  • 00:16:34.190 --> 00:16:36.190
  • I mean, couldn't you have both?"
  • 00:16:36.200 --> 00:16:38.150
  • Well, he didn't like that.
  • 00:16:38.160 --> 00:16:40.040
  • I said, "Young man, you don't have a problem with me.
  • 00:16:40.050 --> 00:16:42.230
  • You have a problem with the apostle John, frankly."
  • 00:16:42.240 --> 00:16:45.260
  • He said, "What do you mean the apostle John?"
  • 00:16:45.270 --> 00:16:47.130
  • I said, "Well, John viewed Jesus' life.
  • 00:16:47.140 --> 00:16:49.140
  • He was in the inside group.
  • 00:16:49.150 --> 00:16:51.130
  • And he said--after seeing his life he said this, "As many as
  • 00:16:51.140 --> 00:16:55.160
  • received him, to them he gave the power to become children
  • 00:16:55.170 --> 00:17:00.280
  • of God to as many who would believe in his name."
  • 00:17:00.290 --> 00:17:04.240
  • A few years back, I had the distinct privilege of eating
  • 00:17:08.010 --> 00:17:11.260
  • dinner with Dr. Billy Graham at his house, and through the
  • 00:17:11.270 --> 00:17:16.000
  • evening I just had so many questions 'cause I knew
  • 00:17:16.010 --> 00:17:18.120
  • that he had met with, like, the who's who in the
  • 00:17:18.130 --> 00:17:20.080
  • political world over the years: kings and queens and presidents
  • 00:17:20.090 --> 00:17:22.240
  • and prime ministers and theologians.
  • 00:17:22.250 --> 00:17:25.060
  • And I was asking him about his time with John F. Kennedy
  • 00:17:25.070 --> 00:17:28.100
  • and his time preaching in London and talked about
  • 00:17:28.110 --> 00:17:31.220
  • Martyn Lloyd-Jones, one of my favorite authors that I love
  • 00:17:31.230 --> 00:17:35.040
  • to read, great preacher, and he said,
  • 00:17:35.050 --> 00:17:38.010
  • "I'd like to tell you a story about him."
  • 00:17:38.020 --> 00:17:41.040
  • I'm sitting, I thought, "Well, I'm all ears."
  • 00:17:41.050 --> 00:17:42.220
  • He said, "I did a crusade in London."
  • 00:17:42.230 --> 00:17:45.210
  • And he said, "As I was getting ready to do the crusade, I asked
  • 00:17:45.220 --> 00:17:49.040
  • Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, the pastor of Westminster Chapel,
  • 00:17:49.050 --> 00:17:52.100
  • to be a part of our crusade and to support it, and he said--he
  • 00:17:52.110 --> 00:17:55.160
  • leaned in and he said, 'Billy, I will do it under one condition:
  • 00:17:55.170 --> 00:17:58.150
  • that you don't invite people forward to receive Christ.
  • 00:17:58.160 --> 00:18:04.090
  • If you don't do that, I will get behind you.
  • 00:18:04.100 --> 00:18:06.140
  • If you do that, I won't do it.'"
  • 00:18:06.150 --> 00:18:07.240
  • He says, "I'm gonna call people forward,"
  • 00:18:07.250 --> 00:18:09.100
  • and so Lloyd-Jones didn't get involved.
  • 00:18:09.110 --> 00:18:11.070
  • And when I heard this story, I so wished that Lloyd-Jones
  • 00:18:11.080 --> 00:18:14.180
  • would have been around long enough to read
  • 00:18:14.190 --> 00:18:17.010
  • J.I. Packer's seminal work on this very subject,
  • 00:18:17.020 --> 00:18:22.010
  • called "Evangelism and the Sovereignty of God,"
  • 00:18:22.020 --> 00:18:24.050
  • in which he writes, "It is a matter not of merely informing
  • 00:18:24.060 --> 00:18:28.210
  • people but also of inviting people," inviting them.
  • 00:18:28.220 --> 00:18:34.210
  • Invite them to make a decision to follow Christ,
  • 00:18:34.220 --> 00:18:38.040
  • because evangelism is the intersection between divine,
  • 00:18:38.050 --> 00:18:42.240
  • sovereign predestination and human volition.
  • 00:18:42.250 --> 00:18:46.290
  • Paul said in 2 Corinthians 5, "Knowing therefore the terror
  • 00:18:47.000 --> 00:18:50.240
  • of the Lord, we persuade men."
  • 00:18:50.250 --> 00:18:56.260
  • Now, what forms of evangelism do we find in the New Testament?
  • 00:18:56.270 --> 00:19:01.100
  • Let me suggest three. Number one, mass evangelism.
  • 00:19:01.110 --> 00:19:07.220
  • You go, "Wait a minute, mass evangelism?
  • 00:19:07.230 --> 00:19:09.200
  • That was started with guys like Wesley and Whitefield, or
  • 00:19:09.210 --> 00:19:13.230
  • Jonathan Edwards here in this country, or Finney, or Moody."
  • 00:19:13.240 --> 00:19:17.110
  • No, actually, I think you have to go back to the New Testament.
  • 00:19:17.120 --> 00:19:21.050
  • I think you have to go back to the time of Jesus, who had
  • 00:19:21.060 --> 00:19:24.030
  • crowds around him in Galilee, and he said to the crowds in
  • 00:19:24.040 --> 00:19:28.120
  • Galilee, "Come unto me, all you who labor and are heavy laden,
  • 00:19:28.130 --> 00:19:32.160
  • and I will give you rest."
  • 00:19:32.170 --> 00:19:33.260
  • That's an invitation to follow him, made by Jesus
  • 00:19:33.270 --> 00:19:37.070
  • to the crowd en masse.
  • 00:19:37.080 --> 00:19:40.220
  • I'm very thankful for mass evangelism.
  • 00:19:40.230 --> 00:19:44.010
  • It's how I responded, it's why I'm here today, because of
  • 00:19:44.020 --> 00:19:49.100
  • somebody who had the boldness and gifting to share
  • 00:19:49.110 --> 00:19:51.280
  • the gospel at a public event, which I was able to see
  • 00:19:51.290 --> 00:19:55.280
  • on a television broadcast.
  • 00:19:55.290 --> 00:19:58.160
  • Then we have Peter here on the day of Pentecost.
  • 00:19:58.170 --> 00:20:02.050
  • Peter speaks to the crowd in mass evangelism.
  • 00:20:02.060 --> 00:20:06.020
  • He says, "Repent.
  • 00:20:06.030 --> 00:20:08.250
  • Be saved from this perverse generation," his words here
  • 00:20:08.260 --> 00:20:12.150
  • in Acts 2, and 3.000 souls were added to them.
  • 00:20:12.160 --> 00:20:18.020
  • That's mass evangelism.
  • 00:20:18.030 --> 00:20:20.230
  • Paul, in the book of Acts chapter 14, in the city of
  • 00:20:20.240 --> 00:20:23.050
  • Lystra, later on Acts 17 in Athens, there was a private
  • 00:20:23.060 --> 00:20:26.260
  • as well as a public evangelism, so mass evangelism.
  • 00:20:26.270 --> 00:20:32.190
  • Now, later on came Whitefield, Wesley in England,
  • 00:20:32.200 --> 00:20:36.250
  • and other people here in the United States
  • 00:20:36.260 --> 00:20:40.090
  • like Finney and Edwards, Billy Sunday,
  • 00:20:40.100 --> 00:20:42.250
  • Dwight L. Moody, Billy Graham.
  • 00:20:42.260 --> 00:20:46.060
  • I mentioned that Dwight L. Moody loved evangelism,
  • 00:20:46.070 --> 00:20:48.160
  • and he would call people to make a choice.
  • 00:20:48.170 --> 00:20:50.240
  • And after one of his services, a lady came up to him
  • 00:20:50.250 --> 00:20:55.180
  • and said, "Mr. Moody, I don't like the way you do evangelism."
  • 00:20:55.190 --> 00:21:00.140
  • And he was very classy, he said, "Well, I'm actually,
  • 00:21:00.150 --> 00:21:03.150
  • to be honest with you, not too fond of it myself.
  • 00:21:03.160 --> 00:21:07.010
  • I don't think I do a great job myself."
  • 00:21:07.020 --> 00:21:09.200
  • But he said, "Tell me, ma'am, how do you do it?
  • 00:21:09.210 --> 00:21:15.120
  • We'll do it your way."
  • 00:21:15.130 --> 00:21:17.290
  • And she said, "I don't do it."
  • 00:21:18.000 --> 00:21:21.000
  • Then he smiled and he said, "Well, then I would say I like
  • 00:21:21.010 --> 00:21:24.100
  • the way I do it better than the way you don't do it."
  • 00:21:24.110 --> 00:21:28.250
  • It's a very good response.
  • 00:21:28.260 --> 00:21:30.140
  • I don't think you have the right to criticize unless you do it,
  • 00:21:30.150 --> 00:21:32.220
  • and you do it effectively.
  • 00:21:32.230 --> 00:21:34.110
  • So, mass evangelism is one way in the New Testament
  • 00:21:34.120 --> 00:21:36.180
  • it was done.
  • 00:21:36.190 --> 00:21:38.170
  • A second way it was done is what you and I are most used to.
  • 00:21:38.180 --> 00:21:42.050
  • This is for us now, this is what we do mostly,
  • 00:21:42.060 --> 00:21:44.260
  • and that is personal evangelism, one on one.
  • 00:21:44.270 --> 00:21:47.110
  • You build a relationship with someone and whether you strike
  • 00:21:47.120 --> 00:21:50.130
  • up a conversation, or over time as they see your life and you
  • 00:21:50.140 --> 00:21:54.190
  • have the opportunity to share with them, you share with them
  • 00:21:54.200 --> 00:21:59.260
  • personally how to know the Lord.
  • 00:21:59.270 --> 00:22:02.150
  • Jesus did that in the New Testament.
  • 00:22:02.160 --> 00:22:04.270
  • He personally met with the woman at the well in John 4 and had
  • 00:22:04.280 --> 00:22:08.040
  • a conversation with her, and she responded favorably,
  • 00:22:08.050 --> 00:22:11.100
  • and she believed in him, it says, and then she went out
  • 00:22:11.110 --> 00:22:14.180
  • and she told the townspeople the same message.
  • 00:22:14.190 --> 00:22:19.010
  • Also, Philip personally evangelized the Ethiopian eunuch
  • 00:22:19.020 --> 00:22:23.120
  • as he joined himself to that chariot in Acts chapter 8.
  • 00:22:23.130 --> 00:22:27.160
  • That is our responsibility.
  • 00:22:27.170 --> 00:22:30.280
  • Actually, a better word would be "privilege."
  • 00:22:30.290 --> 00:22:33.130
  • It's our privilege to share with people, our friends,
  • 00:22:33.140 --> 00:22:36.180
  • our neighbors, our relatives, people we work with,
  • 00:22:36.190 --> 00:22:42.070
  • how to come to know Jesus Christ.
  • 00:22:42.080 --> 00:22:45.060
  • And by the way, let me suggest, because I know people go, "Oh,
  • 00:22:45.070 --> 00:22:47.170
  • I hate sermons like this 'cause I'm really bad at this stuff,
  • 00:22:47.180 --> 00:22:50.170
  • and I get embarrassed 'cause I just don't do this,"
  • 00:22:50.180 --> 00:22:52.240
  • you can be creative with this.
  • 00:22:52.250 --> 00:22:55.090
  • I heard of an ophthalmologist in Dallas, Texas
  • 00:22:55.100 --> 00:22:58.100
  • who performed cataract surgeries.
  • 00:22:58.110 --> 00:23:00.110
  • He had an ingenious way to witness.
  • 00:23:00.120 --> 00:23:03.030
  • After the surgery, when patients would come back for follow-up
  • 00:23:03.040 --> 00:23:05.240
  • exams and they would have to see if they can read things and see
  • 00:23:05.250 --> 00:23:09.180
  • things, they have to go through a series of tests, instead of
  • 00:23:09.190 --> 00:23:12.150
  • the standard ophthalmological line that they had to read "now
  • 00:23:12.160 --> 00:23:17.030
  • is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their
  • 00:23:17.040 --> 00:23:19.110
  • country," this ophthalmologist switched it out with the words
  • 00:23:19.120 --> 00:23:25.080
  • "God loves you and has a wonderful plan for your life."
  • 00:23:25.090 --> 00:23:29.170
  • And so, he would say, "Can you read that?
  • 00:23:29.180 --> 00:23:32.010
  • What does it say? Say it out loud."
  • 00:23:32.020 --> 00:23:36.010
  • "God loves you and has a wonderful plan for your life."
  • 00:23:36.020 --> 00:23:40.210
  • And he said invariably patients would say,
  • 00:23:40.220 --> 00:23:43.110
  • "Well, doctor, what is that plan?"
  • 00:23:43.120 --> 00:23:46.210
  • And he had an opportunity to share.
  • 00:23:46.220 --> 00:23:48.210
  • That's creativity.
  • 00:23:48.220 --> 00:23:52.090
  • Another one that I personally know of is a girl named Barb.
  • 00:23:52.100 --> 00:23:55.100
  • She used to go to my Bible study in Garden Grove, California
  • 00:23:55.110 --> 00:23:57.280
  • when I taught there years ago.
  • 00:23:57.290 --> 00:23:59.250
  • She was a cute, little brunette at the time, single,
  • 00:23:59.260 --> 00:24:02.030
  • and she was an expert pool player.
  • 00:24:02.040 --> 00:24:05.170
  • I never met anybody who could beat her in a game of pool.
  • 00:24:05.180 --> 00:24:08.090
  • It's what she was trained at. She was doing it professionally.
  • 00:24:08.100 --> 00:24:10.240
  • So, she would go in the bars, she would hang out there,
  • 00:24:10.250 --> 00:24:15.090
  • and young men would come and try to pick her up,
  • 00:24:15.100 --> 00:24:16.280
  • "Hey, baby, can I buy you a drink?"
  • 00:24:16.290 --> 00:24:19.170
  • And she would smile, and she says, "Tell you what.
  • 00:24:19.180 --> 00:24:22.200
  • Let's play a game of pool. The condition is this.
  • 00:24:22.210 --> 00:24:27.170
  • If I beat you in pool, you have to listen to what I have to say.
  • 00:24:27.180 --> 00:24:34.080
  • If you win, I'll sit and let you buy me a drink."
  • 00:24:34.090 --> 00:24:38.220
  • She never lost.
  • 00:24:38.230 --> 00:24:41.090
  • She had many opportunities to lead many young suitors
  • 00:24:41.100 --> 00:24:45.070
  • to faith in Christ.
  • 00:24:45.080 --> 00:24:46.260
  • She brought 'em--some of 'em to the Bible study.
  • 00:24:46.270 --> 00:24:49.030
  • That's creativity.
  • 00:24:49.040 --> 00:24:51.040
  • Or you could be like the man last week who came to me after
  • 00:24:51.050 --> 00:24:53.230
  • a wedding that I had performed, it was at the reception, and he
  • 00:24:53.240 --> 00:24:56.020
  • said, "Come over here," and he took me over
  • 00:24:56.030 --> 00:24:57.270
  • and introduced me to his wife.
  • 00:24:57.280 --> 00:24:59.160
  • And when I got there, he said, "Tell my wife how to get saved."
  • 00:24:59.170 --> 00:25:02.170
  • [congregation laughing]
  • 00:25:02.180 --> 00:25:07.160
  • So I did, and she did.
  • 00:25:07.170 --> 00:25:12.270
  • [congregation applauding]
  • 00:25:12.280 --> 00:25:16.220
  • Let me give you a third.
  • 00:25:16.230 --> 00:25:18.100
  • There's local church evangelism, and really this is the thought,
  • 00:25:18.110 --> 00:25:22.080
  • I believe, of the text before us.
  • 00:25:22.090 --> 00:25:25.110
  • It is a combination of number one, mass evangelism,
  • 00:25:25.120 --> 00:25:29.020
  • and number two, personal evangelism.
  • 00:25:29.030 --> 00:25:31.060
  • It's local church life.
  • 00:25:31.070 --> 00:25:33.010
  • In the life of the local church, it is the natural outreach.
  • 00:25:33.020 --> 00:25:38.100
  • The worshipers become those who are witnessing.
  • 00:25:38.110 --> 00:25:43.220
  • That's part of what is going on.
  • 00:25:43.230 --> 00:25:45.260
  • It's really the cycle of evangelism.
  • 00:25:45.270 --> 00:25:48.210
  • I would define the cycle of evangelism as worship should
  • 00:25:48.220 --> 00:25:51.240
  • lead to witness, and then witness should lead to worship.
  • 00:25:51.250 --> 00:25:57.090
  • Now, the ones who have done the most research on evangelical
  • 00:25:57.100 --> 00:26:02.200
  • Christians in our country is the Barna Research Group.
  • 00:26:02.210 --> 00:26:05.230
  • They do this every year, they have done it for years, and the
  • 00:26:05.240 --> 00:26:09.070
  • Barna researchers look at what Christians believe, what they
  • 00:26:09.080 --> 00:26:12.160
  • think, what they do, how they go to church, how they don't go to
  • 00:26:12.170 --> 00:26:14.260
  • church, what they do with their faith, and they have noted this:
  • 00:26:14.270 --> 00:26:19.200
  • that 55% of born-again Christians claim to have shared
  • 00:26:19.210 --> 00:26:23.280
  • their faith with a non-Christian in the last 12 months.
  • 00:26:23.290 --> 00:26:26.230
