  • Brian Houston: Well, we are Brian and Bobbie Houston, and
  • 00:00:01.210 --> 00:00:02.200
  • we're the pastors of Hillsong Church.
  • 00:00:02.210 --> 00:00:04.260
  • We actually planted our church over 33 years ago.
  • 00:00:04.270 --> 00:00:07.290
  • And by God's grace, it's become a global church.
  • 00:00:08.000 --> 00:00:11.060
  • We wanna thank you for watching the Hillsong Channel.
  • 00:00:11.070 --> 00:00:13.220
  • Bobbie Houston: It is our desire that anyone who walks
  • 00:00:13.230 --> 00:00:16.100
  • into a Hillsong Church, whether in the far reaches of Cape Town,
  • 00:00:16.110 --> 00:00:20.010
  • South Africa, or off the busy streets of Manhattan, or the
  • 00:00:20.020 --> 00:00:23.070
  • cobblestone paths of Europe, or right here in Sydney, Australia,
  • 00:00:23.080 --> 00:00:27.070
  • that you would feel a sense of welcome and belonging,
  • 00:00:27.080 --> 00:00:30.050
  • that the powerful worship and biblical teaching would
  • 00:00:30.060 --> 00:00:32.270
  • meet you right where you are at and help you reach
  • 00:00:32.280 --> 00:00:35.110
  • your full potential in Christ.
  • 00:00:35.120 --> 00:00:37.080
  • Brian: I'm so proud of all of our Hillsong lead pastors
  • 00:00:37.090 --> 00:00:40.000
  • around the world.
  • 00:00:40.010 --> 00:00:41.210
  • They are strong in the Word, be blessed.
  • 00:00:41.220 --> 00:00:43.210
  • 00:00:44.090 --> 00:00:53.280
  • 00:00:54.120 --> 00:00:59.120
  • Terry Crist: Hello, and welcome to Hillsong Church Phoenix.
  • 00:01:00.150 --> 00:01:03.040
  • We meet all across the Phoenix Valley, from the beautiful
  • 00:01:03.050 --> 00:01:05.210
  • suburbs to the working-class neighborhoods,
  • 00:01:05.220 --> 00:01:08.110
  • right into the downtown urban core.
  • 00:01:08.120 --> 00:01:11.010
  • We love this city, from its rugged beauty to
  • 00:01:11.020 --> 00:01:13.280
  • its rich diversity to its sense of youthful energy.
  • 00:01:13.290 --> 00:01:17.190
  • There's so much to value and treasure right here.
  • 00:01:17.200 --> 00:01:21.140
  • But most of all, we love the people who live here.
  • 00:01:21.150 --> 00:01:24.070
  • Our heart is to see their lives transformed with
  • 00:01:24.080 --> 00:01:27.010
  • the love and grace of Jesus.
  • 00:01:27.020 --> 00:01:30.100
  • I'm Terry Crist, and along with my wife, Judith, we're
  • 00:01:30.110 --> 00:01:33.040
  • the lead pastors of Hillsong Church Phoenix.
  • 00:01:33.050 --> 00:01:36.050
  • And I'm so glad that you've taken time to join us on the
  • 00:01:36.060 --> 00:01:38.250
  • Hillsong Channel for one of our weekend services.
  • 00:01:38.260 --> 00:01:42.000
  • I'm excited about the message that I'm sharing today, and
  • 00:01:42.010 --> 00:01:44.240
  • I really believe it has the potential to change your life.
  • 00:01:44.250 --> 00:01:48.110
  • Terry: We live in a world today where there are
  • 00:01:49.150 --> 00:01:51.030
  • so many competing truths in our generation.
  • 00:01:51.040 --> 00:01:53.240
  • There's not one thing to question anymore.
  • 00:01:53.250 --> 00:01:56.160
  • It's everything that you have to question today.
  • 00:01:56.170 --> 00:01:59.110
  • It's everything you have to analyze today.
  • 00:01:59.120 --> 00:02:01.270
  • Jesus, the Master Teacher, stands here and says to us,
  • 00:02:01.280 --> 00:02:06.020
  • "I am the way.
  • 00:02:06.030 --> 00:02:07.190
  • I am the truth. I am the life.
  • 00:02:07.200 --> 00:02:10.010
  • Follow me, and I will lead you into a place of security with
  • 00:02:10.020 --> 00:02:16.000
  • God your Father in heaven because my words are truth."
  • 00:02:16.010 --> 00:02:19.190
  • Terry: Would you give a great big welcome
  • 00:02:22.100 --> 00:02:23.260
  • to everyone who is joining us on the Hillsong Channel,
  • 00:02:23.270 --> 00:02:26.210
  • watching from anywhere in the world?
  • 00:02:26.220 --> 00:02:29.150
  • It's so good to have you with us here today.
  • 00:02:29.160 --> 00:02:33.270
  • We are continuing on with our study on the life of Jesus.
  • 00:02:33.280 --> 00:02:37.090
  • We began this series 4 weeks ago by looking at the way that we
  • 00:02:37.100 --> 00:02:40.250
  • often conform Jesus into our own image, rather than seeing him
  • 00:02:40.260 --> 00:02:45.290
  • in the image that he reveals of himself in the Gospels.
  • 00:02:46.000 --> 00:02:50.080
  • In the very first week, we unpacked the idea
  • 00:02:50.090 --> 00:02:52.270
  • of Jesus being the Son of God.
  • 00:02:52.280 --> 00:02:55.240
  • In the second week, we looked at "Jesus, the Miracle Worker."
  • 00:02:55.250 --> 00:02:59.210
  • Last weekend, Tyler, our youngest son, spoke,
  • 00:02:59.220 --> 00:03:02.240
  • and he talked about "Jesus, the Son of Man."
  • 00:03:02.250 --> 00:03:05.240
  • And then, this morning, I'm going to talk about "Jesus,
  • 00:03:05.250 --> 00:03:08.200
  • the Master Teacher," "Jesus, the Master Teacher."
  • 00:03:08.210 --> 00:03:13.120
  • And by the way, since we're on the subject of teachers today,
  • 00:03:13.130 --> 00:03:17.130
  • I'd like to take a moment just to honor
  • 00:03:17.140 --> 00:03:19.160
  • all of the teachers in the room.
  • 00:03:19.170 --> 00:03:21.100
  • So, if you are currently serving as a teacher, or
  • 00:03:21.110 --> 00:03:25.000
  • if you have been a teacher at any point in the past,
  • 00:03:25.010 --> 00:03:27.200
  • would you just raise your hands so we can celebrate you,
  • 00:03:27.210 --> 00:03:30.200
  • and honor and appreciate you today?
  • 00:03:30.210 --> 00:03:35.010
  • Wow, come on, fantastic.
  • 00:03:35.020 --> 00:03:39.270
  • [congregation cheering]
  • 00:03:39.280 --> 00:03:41.280
  • All across our church this morning, I have seen
  • 00:03:41.290 --> 00:03:45.150
  • an extraordinary number of hands raised.
  • 00:03:45.160 --> 00:03:47.230
  • And we want you to know how much that we appreciate you.
  • 00:03:47.240 --> 00:03:50.150
  • I recognize that teaching is a challenging profession.
  • 00:03:50.160 --> 00:03:54.050
  • And we need extraordinary teachers.
  • 00:03:54.060 --> 00:03:56.260
  • In fact, let me tell you how I know that.
  • 00:03:56.270 --> 00:03:58.230
  • Here's a little-known fact about me.
  • 00:03:58.240 --> 00:04:01.260
  • I actually was a junior high teacher for about 3 months.
  • 00:04:01.270 --> 00:04:09.030
  • It's true, it's absolutely true.
  • 00:04:10.140 --> 00:04:12.150
  • I was a young pastor, and I thought, "You know,
  • 00:04:12.160 --> 00:04:14.140
  • maybe I could contribute to the community."
  • 00:04:14.150 --> 00:04:17.010
  • And also, as young church planters, we needed to open up,
  • 00:04:17.020 --> 00:04:21.000
  • as we now say, "Another stream of revenue."
  • 00:04:21.010 --> 00:04:24.260
  • If you say, "You don't know anything about teaching,"
  • 00:04:24.270 --> 00:04:26.180
  • clearly, I didn't.
  • 00:04:26.190 --> 00:04:28.020
  • And so, I went and got my teaching certificate
  • 00:04:28.030 --> 00:04:30.100
  • and launched into it with a heart of full devotion,
  • 00:04:30.110 --> 00:04:33.110
  • and sputtered out 3 months later.
  • 00:04:33.120 --> 00:04:36.200
  • And the reason I did was because I discovered something.
  • 00:04:36.210 --> 00:04:39.010
  • Apparently, teachers need this thing called
  • 00:04:39.020 --> 00:04:42.180
  • patience, patience, yeah.
  • 00:04:42.190 --> 00:04:46.100
  • And that's about as rare as a herd of unicorns to me.
  • 00:04:46.110 --> 00:04:50.150
  • I don't have the gift of patience, and so I have a lot
  • 00:04:50.160 --> 00:04:53.230
  • of respect and appreciation for all of our teachers.
  • 00:04:53.240 --> 00:04:56.260
  • And just wanna encourage ya by saying
  • 00:04:56.270 --> 00:04:59.060
  • that we are praying for you.
  • 00:04:59.070 --> 00:05:00.190
  • We believe in you.
  • 00:05:00.200 --> 00:05:02.000
  • And whether you see it or not, you are making a difference
  • 00:05:02.010 --> 00:05:04.140
  • in the world around you, amen?
  • 00:05:04.150 --> 00:05:07.130
  • [congregation applauding]
  • 00:05:07.140 --> 00:05:10.080
  • Jesus, on the other hand, was a brilliant Teacher.
  • 00:05:10.090 --> 00:05:13.280
  • He was a brilliant Teacher.
  • 00:05:13.290 --> 00:05:15.100
  • Matthew chapter 5, and verse 1 is where
  • 00:05:15.110 --> 00:05:17.160
  • I wanna begin our teaching journey this morning as
  • 00:05:17.170 --> 00:05:19.240
  • we look at Jesus, the Master Teacher.
  • 00:05:19.250 --> 00:05:23.090
  • The Bible says this: "Seeing the crowds, Jesus went up on
  • 00:05:23.100 --> 00:05:26.280
  • a mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him.
  • 00:05:26.290 --> 00:05:31.120
  • Then he opened his mouth and he taught them, saying..."
  • 00:05:31.130 --> 00:05:36.050
  • Now, this teaching, which begins in verse 3 actually
  • 00:05:36.060 --> 00:05:39.000
  • takes two entire chapters to complete.
  • 00:05:39.010 --> 00:05:42.160
  • If you're reading from a red-letter edition of the Bible,
  • 00:05:42.170 --> 00:05:45.260
  • then just flip it open to Matthew chapter 5,
  • 00:05:45.270 --> 00:05:48.130
  • and you'll see an absolute sea of red ink.
  • 00:05:48.140 --> 00:05:52.220
  • This is the longest sermon recorded
  • 00:05:52.230 --> 00:05:54.290
  • in the ministry of Jesus.
  • 00:05:55.000 --> 00:05:57.010
  • It begins in chapter 5 and continues
  • 00:05:57.020 --> 00:05:59.010
  • right on through chapter 7.
  • 00:05:59.020 --> 00:06:01.220
  • In verse 3, he unpacks the Beatitudes.
  • 00:06:01.230 --> 00:06:05.000
  • In verse 13, he unveils the purpose of the church.
  • 00:06:05.010 --> 00:06:09.110
  • In verse 17, he illustrates the importance
  • 00:06:09.120 --> 00:06:11.260
  • of personal righteousness.
  • 00:06:11.270 --> 00:06:13.260
  • By that time, he led us into the middle of the discourse,
  • 00:06:13.270 --> 00:06:16.240
  • and then he stops there and teaches us to pray.
  • 00:06:16.250 --> 00:06:20.160
  • He then encourages them in chapter 6 to trust God
  • 00:06:20.170 --> 00:06:23.150
  • for their personal needs to be met.
  • 00:06:23.160 --> 00:06:25.270
  • He then emphasizes the importance
  • 00:06:25.280 --> 00:06:27.240
  • of forgiveness in our lives.
  • 00:06:27.250 --> 00:06:29.240
  • And then he wraps all of that up by warning
  • 00:06:29.250 --> 00:06:32.180
  • them about the danger of false teachers.
  • 00:06:32.190 --> 00:06:36.130
  • It's a pretty broad message.
  • 00:06:36.140 --> 00:06:39.070
  • It certainly isn't a modern, single-point sermon.
  • 00:06:39.080 --> 00:06:42.200
  • Jesus is instructing them in the practical ways of God related to
  • 00:06:42.210 --> 00:06:48.270
  • their everyday lives, and he realizes that all of these
  • 00:06:48.280 --> 00:06:52.240
  • things found here in chapter 5, 6, and 7, are relevant to our
  • 00:06:52.250 --> 00:06:56.200
  • lives, things like forgiveness, the importance of knowing how to
  • 00:06:56.210 --> 00:07:01.190
  • connect with God in prayer, the expression of personal
  • 00:07:01.200 --> 00:07:04.230
  • generosity, guarding our hearts against those
  • 00:07:04.240 --> 00:07:09.060
  • voices in the world that would intentionally lead us
  • 00:07:09.070 --> 00:07:12.240
  • astray from following Jesus.
  • 00:07:12.250 --> 00:07:15.080
  • All of the things that he covers there are
  • 00:07:15.090 --> 00:07:17.140
  • relevant to our daily lives.
  • 00:07:17.150 --> 00:07:20.280
  • Terry: What if we were so confident in our relationship
  • 00:07:21.250 --> 00:07:24.140
  • with God and our connection to the Book that we could
  • 00:07:24.150 --> 00:07:26.290
  • just share the gospel with people around us?
  • 00:07:27.000 --> 00:07:29.280
  • And if they accept it, we rejoice.
  • 00:07:29.290 --> 00:07:31.290
  • And if they don't, we just whistle
  • 00:07:32.000 --> 00:07:34.000
  • our way through the crowd.
  • 00:07:34.010 --> 00:07:35.110
  • But none of that impacts our commitment to sharing truth.
  • 00:07:35.120 --> 00:07:40.210
  • I love that idea 'cause I think a lot of times, we tend to
  • 00:07:40.220 --> 00:07:43.090
  • share truth in the hopes of gaining acceptance.
  • 00:07:43.100 --> 00:07:48.000
  • message, Matthew chapter 7, in verse 28, Jesus wraps all of
  • 00:07:56.050 --> 00:07:59.250
  • that up, and then the Bible says: "And when Jesus had
  • 00:07:59.260 --> 00:08:04.040
  • finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his
  • 00:08:04.050 --> 00:08:08.080
  • teaching, for he was teaching them as one who had authority,
  • 00:08:08.090 --> 00:08:12.160
  • and not as their scribes."
  • 00:08:12.170 --> 00:08:15.220
  • The scribes were, of course, the religious teachers of the day.
  • 00:08:15.230 --> 00:08:19.020
  • He taught as one who had authority,
  • 00:08:19.030 --> 00:08:21.220
  • not as the other teachers did.
  • 00:08:21.230 --> 00:08:25.040
  • The thing that initially sets Jesus apart from
  • 00:08:25.050 --> 00:08:28.090
  • all of those other religious leaders of the day was
  • 00:08:28.100 --> 00:08:31.010
  • the fact that he taught with authority.
  • 00:08:31.020 --> 00:08:34.090
  • He communicated to the people what God expected of them with
  • 00:08:34.100 --> 00:08:38.090
  • a clarity, not with a moral superiority, but with a sincere,
  • 00:08:38.100 --> 00:08:44.060
  • God-given authority, and it became
  • 00:08:44.070 --> 00:08:47.290
  • a hallmark of his teaching.
  • 00:08:48.000 --> 00:08:50.120
  • In fact, time and time again throughout the Gospels,
  • 00:08:50.130 --> 00:08:52.070
  • you see that phrase.
  • 00:08:52.080 --> 00:08:54.200
  • It shows up differently, but it kind of comes down to this:
  • 00:08:54.210 --> 00:08:57.260
  • "They were astonished at his teaching, for he taught
  • 00:08:57.270 --> 00:09:00.290
  • them as one having authority."
  • 00:09:01.000 --> 00:09:03.260
  • On another occasion: "And they were amazed at his teaching,
  • 00:09:03.270 --> 00:09:07.230
  • for he taught them as one having authority."
  • 00:09:07.240 --> 00:09:11.070
  • The thing that is consistently paired with the teaching
  • 00:09:11.080 --> 00:09:14.260
  • ministry of Jesus was the fact that he spoke not with
  • 00:09:14.270 --> 00:09:19.020
  • arrogance, not with condescension, not with moral
  • 00:09:19.030 --> 00:09:22.230
  • superiority, but with a sense of God-ordained authority.
  • 00:09:22.240 --> 00:09:29.000
  • And the reason for that is because he is connected
  • 00:09:29.010 --> 00:09:33.090
  • to the source of truth.
  • 00:09:33.100 --> 00:09:35.170
  • He isn't simply talking about truth in some abstract way,
  • 00:09:35.180 --> 00:09:39.150
  • something he's learned from a textbook, something that he
  • 00:09:39.160 --> 00:09:42.290
  • wants people to know but isn't personally living out.
  • 00:09:43.000 --> 00:09:46.220
  • He is speaking to them, and to us today, as one who is
  • 00:09:46.230 --> 00:09:51.020
  • connected with the source of truth, one who is connected
  • 00:09:51.030 --> 00:09:55.270
  • with the authority of truth.
  • 00:09:55.280 --> 00:09:59.010
  • So, "He taught them as one having authority."
  • 00:09:59.020 --> 00:10:01.080
  • Now, his authority wasn't always received,
  • 00:10:01.090 --> 00:10:05.150
  • but it was always recognized.
  • 00:10:05.160 --> 00:10:08.140
  • And I think it's important to note that.
  • 00:10:08.150 --> 00:10:10.170
  • I mean, there is this one really interesting story that plays out
  • 00:10:10.180 --> 00:10:14.220
  • in the Gospel of Luke chapter 4, where that Jesus is standing in
  • 00:10:14.230 --> 00:10:18.070
  • the synagogue, teaching the people one day, and right in the
  • 00:10:18.080 --> 00:10:21.170
  • middle of his sermon, the congregation decided that they
  • 00:10:21.180 --> 00:10:24.110
  • had enough, and somebody decided to kill him.
  • 00:10:24.120 --> 00:10:29.040
  • It's there, you can read it later.
  • 00:10:29.050 --> 00:10:30.280
  • We're not sure exactly what Jesus was saying, but
  • 00:10:30.290 --> 00:10:32.250
  • apparently, it was provocative enough, it was contrary enough
  • 00:10:32.260 --> 00:10:38.020
  • to what they wanted to hear that somebody said,
  • 00:10:38.030 --> 00:10:40.170
  • "Hey, sermon over, let's drag him to the edge of town
  • 00:10:40.180 --> 00:10:43.280
  • and throw him off of a cliff."
  • 00:10:43.290 --> 00:10:46.200
  • Let me just say, as a side point, that's one reason why
  • 00:10:46.210 --> 00:10:49.070
  • we have our churches deep within the safety of the valley.
  • 00:10:49.080 --> 00:10:54.160
  • It's a long way to the edge of town, and even
  • 00:10:54.170 --> 00:10:57.070
  • further to the closest cliff.
  • 00:10:57.080 --> 00:10:59.180
  • But apparently, that wasn't the case in this situation.
  • 00:10:59.190 --> 00:11:02.270
  • So, they hauled Jesus out there, and as they were prepared
  • 00:11:02.280 --> 00:11:06.100
  • to throw him off the cliff for having taught them with
  • 00:11:06.110 --> 00:11:10.040
  • authority, Jesus turns on them, and the Bible says,
  • 00:11:10.050 --> 00:11:14.270
  • "He passes through the crowd."
  • 00:11:14.280 --> 00:11:17.290
  • It's found in the Gospel of Luke chapter 4, in verse 30:
  • 00:11:18.000 --> 00:11:20.160
  • "But he passed right through the crowd and went on his way."
  • 00:11:20.170 --> 00:11:24.260
  • I love that picture. We don't know how he did it.
  • 00:11:24.270 --> 00:11:28.010
  • I like to envision Jesus turning invisible because that seems
  • 00:11:28.020 --> 00:11:32.220
  • really cool to me that, along with being God and being able
  • 00:11:32.230 --> 00:11:36.150
  • to walk on water and to pass through walls without using the
  • 00:11:36.160 --> 00:11:39.140
  • door, I like to think of Jesus as having an invisibility cloak.
  • 00:11:39.150 --> 00:11:44.030
  • So, humor me, whatever he did,
  • 00:11:44.040 --> 00:11:48.010
  • this just seems so casual to him.
  • 00:11:48.020 --> 00:11:50.260
  • "And he turned and passed through them
  • 00:11:50.270 --> 00:11:54.020
  • and went on his way."
  • 00:11:54.030 --> 00:11:55.270
  • It's like he turns invisible, starts whistling, and strolls
  • 00:11:55.280 --> 00:12:00.020
  • right through the crowd, right off into the sunset without
  • 00:12:00.030 --> 00:12:03.110
  • even being bothered by this for a moment.
  • 00:12:03.120 --> 00:12:06.260
  • I think that's fascinating.
  • 00:12:06.270 --> 00:12:08.150
  • Maybe I'm alone in my fascination of that,
  • 00:12:08.160 --> 00:12:10.190
  • but Jesus doesn't panic.
  • 00:12:10.200 --> 00:12:13.070
  • He doesn't fall into despair.
  • 00:12:13.080 --> 00:12:15.160
  • He doesn't reevaluate his calling.
  • 00:12:15.170 --> 00:12:18.060
  • He's just calm and cool and collected.
  • 00:12:18.070 --> 00:12:20.220
  • And it gives me this really important sense of how confident
  • 00:12:20.230 --> 00:12:25.060
  • he was in his connection with God and the basis
  • 00:12:25.070 --> 00:12:29.170
  • from which his authority came.
  • 00:12:29.180 --> 00:12:32.040
  • And the reason I find that interesting is because what
  • 00:12:32.050 --> 00:12:34.260
  • could happen in our lives if we connected not only with the Book
  • 00:12:34.270 --> 00:12:39.260
  • but with the Author of the Book to such a degree of confidence
  • 00:12:39.270 --> 00:12:44.160
  • that we weren't terrified by the opinions of others?
  • 00:12:44.170 --> 00:12:47.290
  • We didn't take our worth and value by whether or not we're
  • 00:12:48.000 --> 00:12:51.210
  • received or rejected when we're sharing the gospel.
  • 00:12:51.220 --> 00:12:54.220
  • We don't live with a sense of needing the acceptance of man.
  • 00:12:54.230 --> 00:12:58.070
  • What if we were so confident in our relationship with God and
  • 00:12:58.080 --> 00:13:01.260
  • our connection to the Book that we could just share
  • 00:13:01.270 --> 00:13:04.160
  • the gospel with people around us?
  • 00:13:04.170 --> 00:13:06.220
  • And if they accept it, we rejoice.
  • 00:13:06.230 --> 00:13:08.230
  • And if they don't, we just whistle our
  • 00:13:08.240 --> 00:13:10.180
  • way through the crowd.
  • 00:13:10.190 --> 00:13:12.080
  • But none of that impacts our commitment to sharing truth.
  • 00:13:12.090 --> 00:13:18.240
  • I love that idea 'cause I think a lot of times, we tend to share
  • 00:13:18.250 --> 00:13:22.080
  • truth in the hopes of gaining acceptance.
  • 00:13:22.090 --> 00:13:27.020
  • And when we don't find acceptance, we then feel as if
  • 00:13:27.030 --> 00:13:30.170
  • we should reevaluate the truth we're committed to sharing.
  • 00:13:30.180 --> 00:13:35.140
  • But I think when we come to a place of security and confidence
  • 00:13:35.150 --> 00:13:38.100
  • in God, then we can share truths with a generation, not from a
  • 00:13:38.110 --> 00:13:43.000
  • position of arrogance, not from a position of moral superiority,
  • 00:13:43.010 --> 00:13:46.270
  • not looking down our nose at a generation, sharing it with them
  • 00:13:46.280 --> 00:13:51.030
  • from a heart of compassion and kindness, but knowing
  • 00:13:51.040 --> 00:13:54.150
  • that we didn't author the Book.
  • 00:13:54.160 --> 00:13:56.180
  • We can't change the Book.
  • 00:13:56.190 --> 00:13:58.210
  • And if the world doesn't appreciate the Book,
  • 00:13:58.220 --> 00:14:00.240
  • that isn't on us.
  • 00:14:00.250 --> 00:14:02.170
  • It's simply up to us to love the Book and live the Book
  • 00:14:02.180 --> 00:14:05.290
  • and kindly share the Book with the world around us.
  • 00:14:06.000 --> 00:14:09.170
  • Can I get a big "Amen" on that?
  • 00:14:09.180 --> 00:14:11.240
  • [congregation applauding]
  • 00:14:11.250 --> 00:14:14.010
  • And of course, when I talk about the Book, I'm talking about
  • 00:14:14.020 --> 00:14:18.160
  • God's Book, the Bible, the Word of God.
  • 00:14:18.170 --> 00:14:21.250
  • Jesus shares it. Now, here's what's interesting.
  • 00:14:21.260 --> 00:14:24.060
  • So, they drag him out to the edge of
  • 00:14:24.070 --> 00:14:25.240
  • the cliff to throw him off.
  • 00:14:25.250 --> 00:14:27.280
  • He puts on his invisibility cloak, walks right through them,
  • 00:14:27.290 --> 00:14:31.270
  • exits on the other side, and continues his way.
  • 00:14:31.280 --> 00:14:34.210
  • He continues his message, and the Bible tells us then in Luke
  • 00:14:34.220 --> 00:14:37.180
  • chapter 4, in verse 42, just 12 verses later that
  • 00:14:37.190 --> 00:14:42.020
  • he goes to another town.
  • 00:14:42.030 --> 00:14:44.020
  • And when he preaches to them, they receive it with such love
  • 00:14:44.030 --> 00:14:47.180
  • and gratitude, they are so appreciative that Jesus
  • 00:14:47.190 --> 00:14:52.070
  • is there caring for them, preaching truth to them,
  • 00:14:52.080 --> 00:14:55.250
  • that they beg him not to leave them.
  • 00:14:55.260 --> 00:15:00.110
  • Two congregations, two pictures of humanity, one outraged
  • 00:15:00.120 --> 00:15:06.280
  • over the authority with which he spoke, and another grateful
  • 00:15:06.290 --> 00:15:11.080
  • for the authority with which he spoke.
  • 00:15:11.090 --> 00:15:15.060
  • I think these two congregations represent all of humanity.
  • 00:15:15.070 --> 00:15:18.280
  • I think we all fall into one of these two camps.
  • 00:15:18.290 --> 00:15:23.250
  • And those who might fit in the middle are those who have never
  • 00:15:23.260 --> 00:15:26.240
  • really studied the teachings of Jesus long enough
  • 00:15:26.250 --> 00:15:31.110
  • to develop a position on them.
  • 00:15:31.120 --> 00:15:33.260
  • I think it's one thing to love Jesus
  • 00:15:33.270 --> 00:15:36.290
  • without understanding Jesus.
  • 00:15:37.000 --> 00:15:38.280
  • And there are those in a generation who would say,
  • 00:15:38.290 --> 00:15:40.230
  • "Yeah, I love Jesus.
  • 00:15:40.240 --> 00:15:42.030
  • I'm down with Jesus."
  • 00:15:42.040 --> 00:15:43.280
  • But to love Jesus is to follow the claims of Jesus.
  • 00:15:43.290 --> 00:15:47.190
  • And if we separate Jesus out from his teaching, if we
  • 00:15:47.200 --> 00:15:50.070
  • separate Jesus out from his moral authority,
  • 00:15:50.080 --> 00:15:52.220
  • it's easy to fit in this in-between space.
  • 00:15:52.230 --> 00:15:56.060
  • But when you really study the words of Jesus, even
  • 00:15:56.070 --> 00:15:59.250
  • in their kindness, even in their compassion, even in their mercy,
  • 00:15:59.260 --> 00:16:04.120
  • even in his desire to elevate humanity, those teachings push
  • 00:16:04.130 --> 00:16:09.030
  • us to a place where we either worship him or we despise him,
  • 00:16:09.040 --> 00:16:13.100
  • but you cannot fully understand his teachings
  • 00:16:13.110 --> 00:16:16.190
  • and live in that in-between space.
  • 00:16:16.200 --> 00:16:20.190
  • There's something about the heart that pushes us
  • 00:16:20.200 --> 00:16:23.110
  • to adoration or pushes us to rejection when
  • 00:16:23.120 --> 00:16:27.210
  • we fully understand the teaching of Jesus.
  • 00:16:27.220 --> 00:16:31.010
  • What is it about his ministry that causes
  • 00:16:31.020 --> 00:16:34.270
  • that kind of reaction?
  • 00:16:34.280 --> 00:16:36.250
  • Terry: He's not teaching with a PowerPoint presentation.
  • 00:16:37.190 --> 00:16:40.100
  • He's not teaching in front of a chalkboard.
  • 00:16:40.110 --> 00:16:42.070
  • He's teaching life as they journey with him.
  • 00:16:42.080 --> 00:16:46.270
  • And they know that he's a Master Teacher
  • 00:16:46.280 --> 00:16:49.070
  • because they are with him.
  • 00:16:49.080 --> 00:16:52.050
  • They're with him on the road. They're with him early mornings.
  • 00:16:52.060 --> 00:16:55.130
  • They're with him throughout the day.
  • 00:16:55.140 --> 00:16:57.040
  • They're with him at the end of the day.
  • 00:16:57.050 --> 00:16:58.230
  • They have an opportunity to see his life up close and personal,
  • 00:16:58.240 --> 00:17:02.180
  • and they know that "this Man is committed to fully living
  • 00:17:02.190 --> 00:17:06.130
  • out what he is teaching us."
  • 00:17:06.140 --> 00:17:09.020
  • that kind of reaction?
  • 00:17:18.100 --> 00:17:21.030
  • I think in order to understand that, we've gotta talk for a few
  • 00:17:21.040 --> 00:17:23.200
  • moments about the relationship between
  • 00:17:23.210 --> 00:17:25.170
  • the Teacher and his students.
  • 00:17:25.180 --> 00:17:28.070
  • On 11 occasions in the Gospels, Jesus is not just called,
  • 00:17:28.080 --> 00:17:31.250
  • "Teacher," he is called, "Rabbi."
  • 00:17:31.260 --> 00:17:35.000
  • And the word "rabbi" is very significant because that it
  • 00:17:35.010 --> 00:17:38.130
  • speaks of his teaching ministry.
  • 00:17:38.140 --> 00:17:41.090
  • Let me give you an example.
  • 00:17:41.100 --> 00:17:42.210
  • John chapter 3, in verse 2: "After dark one evening, he,"
  • 00:17:42.220 --> 00:17:46.220
  • a man named Nicodemus, "came to speak with Jesus.
  • 00:17:46.230 --> 00:17:49.200
  • 'Rabbi,' he said, 'we all know
  • 00:17:49.210 --> 00:17:51.210
  • that God has sent you to teach us.
  • 00:17:51.220 --> 00:17:54.250
  • Your miraculous signs are the evidence that God is with you.'"
  • 00:17:54.260 --> 00:17:58.230
  • So, he calls Jesus a "Rabbi" on the basis
  • 00:17:58.240 --> 00:18:02.060
  • of having heard his teaching.
  • 00:18:02.070 --> 00:18:05.010
  • It wasn't his miracle ministry that distinguished
  • 00:18:05.020 --> 00:18:07.170
  • Jesus in this occasion.
  • 00:18:07.180 --> 00:18:09.220
  • It wasn't the fact that he was fully God.
  • 00:18:09.230 --> 00:18:12.040
  • It was the fact that he was speaking with wisdom and
  • 00:18:12.050 --> 00:18:15.050
  • with authority, and that was so distinct that this
  • 00:18:15.060 --> 00:18:18.190
  • individual recognized he was a distinguished Rabbi.
  • 00:18:18.200 --> 00:18:23.260
  • So the word "rabbi" always relates
  • 00:18:23.270 --> 00:18:26.080
  • to the teaching ministry of Jesus.
  • 00:18:26.090 --> 00:18:29.260
  • And not just Jesus, for that matter.
  • 00:18:29.270 --> 00:18:32.080
  • In the 1st century, the word "rabbi" was a term of respect
  • 00:18:32.090 --> 00:18:36.080
  • for religious leaders, and primarily for religious lay
  • 00:18:36.090 --> 00:18:40.160
  • leaders, not people who were reverends or pastors,
  • 00:18:40.170 --> 00:18:46.010
  • not for those who did ministry as a vocation,
  • 00:18:46.020 --> 00:18:49.260
  • but for those lay people who did ministry as an
  • 00:18:49.270 --> 00:18:53.010
  • avocation, as a passion, as a delight.
  • 00:18:53.020 --> 00:18:57.060
  • They were those who were a part of the priesthood,
  • 00:18:57.070 --> 00:18:59.140
  • those who were rabbis in the synagogues, and that
  • 00:18:59.150 --> 00:19:02.100
  • was what they did with their life.
  • 00:19:02.110 --> 00:19:04.170
  • But then there were those who had other occupations.
  • 00:19:04.180 --> 00:19:08.050
  • They might have been stonemasons, or carpenters,
  • 00:19:08.060 --> 00:19:12.040
  • could have been camel traders.
  • 00:19:12.050 --> 00:19:14.070
  • Could have been a lot of things, but they loved God's Word
  • 00:19:14.080 --> 00:19:17.010
  • and they wanted to teach God's Word.
  • 00:19:17.020 --> 00:19:18.290
  • And so, in addition to their vocation, their avocation
  • 00:19:19.000 --> 00:19:22.170
  • was to serve as a rabbi.
  • 00:19:22.180 --> 00:19:25.100
  • And many of those rabbis were common
  • 00:19:25.110 --> 00:19:28.250
  • to each and every community.
  • 00:19:28.260 --> 00:19:31.040
  • So, when the Bible defines Jesus as a "Rabbi," it isn't saying
  • 00:19:31.050 --> 00:19:34.190
  • that he's a part of the professional priesthood,
  • 00:19:34.200 --> 00:19:37.030
  • so to speak, it's simply saying, "He is one who loves God's Word,
  • 00:19:37.040 --> 00:19:42.030
  • and has devoted himself to studying it,
  • 00:19:42.040 --> 00:19:44.240
  • and he is now committed to teaching us."
  • 00:19:44.250 --> 00:19:48.160
  • And then, on occasion, they also add in another word to that.
  • 00:19:48.170 --> 00:19:52.020
  • They call him, "Master."
  • 00:19:52.030 --> 00:19:54.050
  • Not just, "Rabbi," but, "Master."
  • 00:19:54.060 --> 00:19:56.280
  • Again, that relates back to teaching.
  • 00:19:56.290 --> 00:20:00.010
  • We hear the word "master" today, and we think domination.
  • 00:20:00.020 --> 00:20:03.000
  • We think authority. We think slavery.
  • 00:20:03.010 --> 00:20:05.100
  • We think abuse. We think of a lot of things.
  • 00:20:05.110 --> 00:20:08.100
  • But in Jesus' day, the idea of being a master simply meant
  • 00:20:08.110 --> 00:20:12.170
  • that one had mastered the teaching that they were sharing.
  • 00:20:12.180 --> 00:20:17.140
  • They weren't teaching from a vacuum.
  • 00:20:17.150 --> 00:20:20.050
  • They weren't teaching by just passing
  • 00:20:20.060 --> 00:20:22.000
  • on what they had learned.
  • 00:20:22.010 --> 00:20:23.180
  • They had learned it. They had absorbed it.
  • 00:20:23.190 --> 00:20:26.060
  • They had begun to live it out.
  • 00:20:26.070 --> 00:20:28.100
  • And as a result, they started teaching it.
  • 00:20:28.110 --> 00:20:30.040
  • And when their lifestyle and their teaching was so
  • 00:20:30.050 --> 00:20:33.210
  • brilliantly enmeshed together that it was undeniable,
  • 00:20:33.220 --> 00:20:37.270
  • they were identified as being master teachers.
  • 00:20:37.280 --> 00:20:41.270
  • Jesus was the Master because he isn't teaching
  • 00:20:41.280 --> 00:20:45.250
  • in the sense of it being in a classroom.
  • 00:20:45.260 --> 00:20:49.010
  • This isn't Jesus with a PowerPoint thing,
  • 00:20:49.020 --> 00:20:57.100
  • words are failing me.
  • 00:20:57.110 --> 00:20:59.270
  • By the way--presentation, thank you, thank you, presentation.
  • 00:20:59.280 --> 00:21:04.120
  • By the way, that's just almost old school.
  • 00:21:04.130 --> 00:21:06.120
  • I'm so cool and innovative and on the cutting edge,
  • 00:21:06.130 --> 00:21:09.040
  • I can't even remember PowerPoint.
  • 00:21:09.050 --> 00:21:13.200
  • You know better than that, don't ya?
  • 00:21:13.210 --> 00:21:15.170
  • He's not teaching with a PowerPoint presentation.
  • 00:21:15.180 --> 00:21:18.020
  • He's not teaching in front of a chalkboard.
  • 00:21:18.030 --> 00:21:20.020
  • He's teaching life as they journey with him.
  • 00:21:20.030 --> 00:21:24.140
  • And they know that he's a Master Teacher
  • 00:21:24.150 --> 00:21:26.220
  • because they are with him.
  • 00:21:26.230 --> 00:21:29.200
  • They're with him on the road. They're with him early mornings.
  • 00:21:29.210 --> 00:21:32.260
  • They're with him throughout the day.
  • 00:21:32.270 --> 00:21:34.200
  • They're with him at the end of the day.
  • 00:21:34.210 --> 00:21:36.140
  • They have an opportunity to see his life up close and personal,
  • 00:21:36.150 --> 00:21:40.010
  • and they know that "this Man is committed to fully living out
  • 00:21:40.020 --> 00:21:44.050
  • what he is teaching us."
  • 00:21:44.060 --> 00:21:47.190
  • Now, let me tell ya, that brings me to this.
  • 00:21:47.200 --> 00:21:50.020
  • There's this blessing that beautifully expresses the
  • 00:21:50.030 --> 00:21:53.160
  • relationship between a student, a follower, a disciple,
  • 00:21:53.170 --> 00:21:58.220
  • and a rabbi, and it's this.
  • 00:21:58.230 --> 00:22:01.100
  • It was common in the 1st century.
  • 00:22:01.110 --> 00:22:02.280
  • It was: "May you always be covered
  • 00:22:02.290 --> 00:22:05.190
  • with the dust of your rabbi."
  • 00:22:05.200 --> 00:22:08.190
  • "May you always be covered with the dust of your rabbi."
  • 00:22:08.200 --> 00:22:11.010
  • In other words, if you're gonna follow a teacher,
  • 00:22:11.020 --> 00:22:13.120
  • may you follow him so closely that the very dust that
  • 00:22:13.130 --> 00:22:16.110
  • he kicks up from his heels covers you.
  • 00:22:16.120 --> 00:22:19.170
  • Jesus was a Teacher who invited people into his life, who
  • 00:22:19.180 --> 00:22:23.170
  • invited them to follow him, who invited them to know
  • 00:22:23.180 --> 00:22:26.240
  • him personally, and his intention was not just
  • 00:22:26.250 --> 00:22:29.220
  • to pass on a way of life to them.
  • 00:22:29.230 --> 00:22:32.070
  • His intention was to spiritually form them so that they could
  • 00:22:32.080 --> 00:22:35.280
  • be an extension of his very life.
  • 00:22:35.290 --> 00:22:40.180
  • He was a Rabbi.
  • 00:22:40.190 --> 00:22:42.090
  • He was a Master Teacher, and he taught as one who had authority.
  • 00:22:42.100 --> 00:22:47.250
  • He taught as one who knew God.
  • 00:22:47.260 --> 00:22:51.110
  • Not just the law of God, but he knew the God of the law.
  • 00:22:51.120 --> 00:22:55.260
  • Not just the prophets of God, but he knew
  • 00:22:55.270 --> 00:22:58.070
  • the God of the prophets.
  • 00:22:58.080 --> 00:23:01.110
  • Now, there's something very interesting about
  • 00:23:01.120 --> 00:23:02.210
  • this period of time.
  • 00:23:02.220 --> 00:23:04.060
  • These rabbis who were master teachers of the day, through
  • 00:23:04.070 --> 00:23:07.150
  • time, also not only taught God's Word, but over time,
  • 00:23:07.160 --> 00:23:12.120
  • layered in their own opinions.
  • 00:23:12.130 --> 00:23:14.220
  • And I think it's important to note this because you're gonna
  • 00:23:14.230 --> 00:23:16.280
  • see something about Jesus over the next couple of moments
  • 00:23:16.290 --> 00:23:19.090
  • that is extremely liberating, extremely empowering,
  • 00:23:19.100 --> 00:23:23.000
  • and shows you the beauty of his heart toward us.
  • 00:23:23.010 --> 00:23:27.180
  • The rabbis taught God's law, and they saw that as
  • 00:23:27.190 --> 00:23:31.190
  • being two parts of a whole.
  • 00:23:31.200 --> 00:23:34.190
  • On one hand, you had the written law.
  • 00:23:34.200 --> 00:23:37.190
  • And remember the story of Moses?
  • 00:23:37.200 --> 00:23:39.270
  • Anybody remember, Charlton Heston went up on the mountain?
  • 00:23:39.280 --> 00:23:45.020
  • This is old-school Sunday, isn't it?
  • 00:23:45.030 --> 00:23:49.140
  • What did God do? God wrote his law in tablets.
  • 00:23:49.150 --> 00:23:53.120
  • That's pretty impressive.
  • 00:23:53.130 --> 00:23:55.110
  • It's hard to get tablets of stone wrong.
  • 00:23:55.120 --> 00:23:59.160
  • They weren't subject to interpretation.
  • 00:23:59.170 --> 00:24:02.070
  • God isn't saying, "I'm just gonna explain this to you,
  • 00:24:02.080 --> 00:24:04.130
  • and then you go down and you just kinda tell
  • 00:24:04.140 --> 00:24:06.130
  • the world what you heard me say."
  • 00:24:06.140 --> 00:24:08.130
  • God said, "This is so important for the sake of humanity
  • 00:24:08.140 --> 00:24:12.110
  • that I'm gonna do this.
  • 00:24:12.120 --> 00:24:13.290
  • I'm gonna take some stone and I'm gonna use my finger
  • 00:24:14.000 --> 00:24:16.090
  • and I'm gonna write Ten Commandments down.
  • 00:24:16.100 --> 00:24:18.230
  • Not ten suggestions, not ten opinions, not ten ways to having
  • 00:24:18.240 --> 00:24:24.000
  • a better week ahead of you, but I wanna give you some moral
  • 00:24:24.010 --> 00:24:27.120
  • absolutes that will be the bedrock for human community."
  • 00:24:27.130 --> 00:24:31.020
  • And so, God gave them the written law.
  • 00:24:31.030 --> 00:24:34.030
  • Moses came down. You know what happened.
  • 00:24:34.040 --> 00:24:37.000
  • He was upset. Walked into church.
  • 00:24:37.010 --> 00:24:39.030
  • People weren't paying attention to his sermon.
  • 00:24:39.040 --> 00:24:40.240
  • Got mad and threw the tablets down.
  • 00:24:40.250 --> 00:24:42.230
  • They broke, that was really bad. That was really costly.
  • 00:24:42.240 --> 00:24:45.220
  • But none of that changed the fact that God had written.
  • 00:24:45.230 --> 00:24:48.260
  • God called him back up.
  • 00:24:48.270 --> 00:24:50.070
  • God says, "Okay, we're gonna get this right this time."
  • 00:24:50.080 --> 00:24:53.130
  • So, that's the written law.
  • 00:24:53.140 --> 00:24:55.290
  • Now, in addition to that, they had the oral law.
  • 00:24:56.000 --> 00:25:00.040
  • History was transmitted orally. The law was transmitted orally.
  • 00:25:00.050 --> 00:25:06.020
  • And so, down through time, the rabbis believed that, in
  • 00:25:06.030 --> 00:25:09.120
  • addition to the written law, God also said some things that were
  • 00:25:09.130 --> 00:25:12.200
  • then passed from Moses to Joshua to the prophets to the
  • 00:25:12.210 --> 00:25:16.180
  • Pharisees, and the rabbis became custodians of that.
  • 00:25:16.190 --> 00:25:21.190
  • So, when they taught God's Word, they did a couple of things.
  • 00:25:21.200 --> 00:25:26.040
  • They taught the written law. They added in verbal law.
  • 00:25:26.050 --> 00:25:29.190
  • And then, in addition to that, they shared their own opinions.
  • 00:25:29.200 --> 00:25:33.060
  • Now, it was important for them to footnote all of that, just
  • 00:25:33.070 --> 00:25:37.290
  • like a judge today would give you the ruling on a case,
  • 00:25:38.000 --> 00:25:41.290
  • and he would say, "And I'm giving you this ruling
  • 00:25:42.000 --> 00:25:44.230
  • based on this," and then he would cite case law.
  • 00:25:44.240 --> 00:25:47.260
  • So, when the rabbis were communicating their messages,
  • 00:25:47.270 --> 00:25:52.040
  • they would give a lot of footnotes.
  • 00:25:52.050 --> 00:25:53.280
  • They would say, "Here's the written law.
  • 00:25:53.290 --> 00:25:55.120
  • Here's the oral law.
  • 00:25:55.130 --> 00:25:56.220
  • And then, here's the long line of succession, all of these
  • 00:25:56.230 --> 00:25:59.270
  • authorities that have spoken in the process."
  • 00:25:59.280 --> 00:26:02.180
  • And the more authorities that you could cite,
  • 00:26:02.190 --> 00:26:05.010
  • the more authority you personally had.
  • 00:26:05.020 --> 00:26:09.100
  • And then they would add their own opinions to it.
  • 00:26:09.110 --> 00:26:11.220
  • And their opinions were called "the yoke."
  • 00:26:11.230 --> 00:26:15.000
  • Now, here's where it gets interesting.
  • 00:26:15.010 --> 00:26:16.290
  • Jesus comes along, and instead of citing all of the
  • 00:26:17.000 --> 00:26:20.060
  • authorities, he tells them clearly and directly what God
  • 00:26:20.070 --> 00:26:24.050
  • expects of them and what God wants for them, and then Jesus
  • 00:26:24.060 --> 00:26:28.060
  • says this: "My yoke is easy and my burden is light."
  • 00:26:28.070 --> 00:26:33.130
  • Terry: He was there to bring them into relationship.
  • 00:26:34.260 --> 00:26:37.030
  • He was there to share the Word of God in such a way that their
  • 00:26:37.040 --> 00:26:40.160
  • hearts were awakened to the beauty of God, to the glory of
  • 00:26:40.170 --> 00:26:44.000
  • God, to the majesty of God, to the power of God, so that they,
  • 00:26:44.010 --> 00:26:47.280
  • in hearing God's Word, would be transformed by God's words.
  • 00:26:47.290 --> 00:26:51.200
  • In other words, "I'm not here to pass on tradition."
  • 00:27:02.100 --> 00:27:06.030
  • Tradition, at best, you know, is okay.
  • 00:27:06.040 --> 00:27:08.260
  • At worst, it's limiting, it's confining, it's destructive.
  • 00:27:08.270 --> 00:27:14.280
  • Jesus wasn't there to pass on tradition.
  • 00:27:14.290 --> 00:27:17.270
  • He was there to connect the people to the heart of God.
  • 00:27:17.280 --> 00:27:20.290
  • He was there to bring them into relationship.
  • 00:27:21.000 --> 00:27:23.080
  • He was there to share the Word of God in such a way that their
  • 00:27:23.090 --> 00:27:26.230
  • hearts were awakened to the beauty of God, to the glory of
  • 00:27:26.240 --> 00:27:29.280
  • God, to the majesty of God, to the power of God, so that they,
  • 00:27:29.290 --> 00:27:34.070
  • in hearing God's Word, would be transformed by God's words.
  • 00:27:34.080 --> 00:27:39.060
  • So, instead of citing a daisy chain of quotations, "Rabbi
  • 00:27:39.070 --> 00:27:45.040
  • Joshua said to Rabbi Goldstein said to Rabbi Goldsmith said to
  • 00:27:45.050 --> 00:27:50.020
  • Rabbi Abraham," instead of citing all of those citations,
  • 00:27:50.030 --> 00:27:54.260
  • Jesus was able just to stand there and say, in John 5,
  • 00:27:54.270 --> 00:27:58.050
  • in verse 30: "'As I hear my Father in heaven say,
  • 00:27:58.060 --> 00:28:01.240
  • so do I say to you.
  • 00:28:01.250 --> 00:28:03.170
  • As I see my Father in heaven do, so do I communicate to you.'"
  • 00:28:03.180 --> 00:28:07.010
  • He is collapsing all of that tradition that keeps the people
  • 00:28:07.020 --> 00:28:11.020
  • separated from God, and he is bringing the heart of God
  • 00:28:11.030 --> 00:28:14.200
  • to the heart of his generation.
  • 00:28:14.210 --> 00:28:19.010
  • Here's where it becomes personal.
  • 00:28:19.020 --> 00:28:21.150
  • What could happen in our lives if we took the pattern of Jesus,
  • 00:28:21.160 --> 00:28:25.140
  • the Master Teacher, and we fell in love with God's Book,
  • 00:28:25.150 --> 00:28:29.040
  • not just for the sake of knowing the facts,
  • 00:28:29.050 --> 00:28:32.130
  • but for the sake of knowing the Author?
  • 00:28:32.140 --> 00:28:34.190
  • And we came back into a place, going big on the Book again,
  • 00:28:34.200 --> 00:28:39.000
  • reading the Book, not as a document, not as some kind of
  • 00:28:39.010 --> 00:28:43.220
  • legal treatise, but reading it as a love letter from a kind and
  • 00:28:43.230 --> 00:28:48.170
  • compassionate and caring God who desires to know us and be known
  • 00:28:48.180 --> 00:28:53.050
  • by us, who desires to connect with us and communicate to us,
  • 00:28:53.060 --> 00:28:57.030
  • who desires to lift us and empower us and liberate us
  • 00:28:57.040 --> 00:29:01.020
  • and position us.
  • 00:29:01.030 --> 00:29:02.180
  • So that instead of relating back through people to know God,
  • 00:29:02.190 --> 00:29:05.120
  • we can stand before a generation and say,
  • 00:29:05.130 --> 00:29:08.030
  • "I know the God of the Book, and I know the Book of my God."
  • 00:29:08.040 --> 00:29:13.030
  • [congregation applauding]
  • 00:29:13.040 --> 00:29:18.230
  • Jesus, the Master Teacher, is not just teaching us,
  • 00:29:18.240 --> 00:29:23.080
  • but he is showing us God's heart for us,
  • 00:29:23.090 --> 00:29:28.090
  • and how God wants us to love his Word passionately.
  • 00:29:28.100 --> 00:29:34.160
  • What if we started doing that?
  • 00:29:34.170 --> 00:29:36.000
  • What if we fell in love with the Bible again?
  • 00:29:36.010 --> 00:29:39.050
  • I don't mean just picking it up on Sunday morning and saying,
  • 00:29:39.060 --> 00:29:41.180
  • "Okay, I'm gonna bring it to church,"
  • 00:29:41.190 --> 00:29:43.040
  • but what if it became a roadmap?
  • 00:29:43.050 --> 00:29:46.160
  • What if it became our life source?
  • 00:29:46.170 --> 00:29:50.200
  • What if we decided, "Hey, in a world where
  • 00:29:50.210 --> 00:29:53.110
  • things have changed--"?
  • 00:29:53.120 --> 00:29:54.230
  • You know, there was a point in time when it used to be cool to
  • 00:29:54.240 --> 00:29:56.200
  • question everything, but that doesn't even exist
  • 00:29:56.210 --> 00:30:00.030
  • anymore 'cause there's no anything to question.
  • 00:30:00.040 --> 00:30:03.000
  • We live in a world today where truth is abstract.
  • 00:30:03.010 --> 00:30:05.200
  • Truth is in the mind of the person in the moment who feels
  • 00:30:05.210 --> 00:30:09.040
  • that they wanna communicate it in the way they do.
  • 00:30:09.050 --> 00:30:11.100
  • We live in a world today where there are so many competing
  • 00:30:11.110 --> 00:30:15.030
  • truths in our generation, there's not one thing
  • 00:30:15.040 --> 00:30:18.120
  • to question anymore.
  • 00:30:18.130 --> 00:30:20.000
  • It's everything that you have to question today.
  • 00:30:20.010 --> 00:30:22.180
  • It's everything you have to analyze today.
  • 00:30:22.190 --> 00:30:25.000
  • Jesus, the Master Teacher, stands here and says to us,
  • 00:30:25.010 --> 00:30:29.060
  • "I am the way.
  • 00:30:29.070 --> 00:30:30.260
  • I am the truth. I am the life.
  • 00:30:30.270 --> 00:30:33.070
  • Follow me, and I will lead you into a place of security with
  • 00:30:33.080 --> 00:30:39.070
  • God your Father in heaven because my words are truth.
  • 00:30:39.080 --> 00:30:44.180
  • My words are truth. My words are truth," he said.
  • 00:30:44.190 --> 00:30:49.120
  • How many of you can understand how unsettling it was?
  • 00:30:49.130 --> 00:30:52.230
  • They're used to going to church and having one rabbi quote
  • 00:30:52.240 --> 00:30:55.250
  • another rabbi quote another rabbi, but Jesus, the Rabbi,
  • 00:30:55.260 --> 00:30:58.260
  • Jesus, the Master Teacher, stands up in the middle
  • 00:30:58.270 --> 00:31:01.100
  • and says, "Here's what God thinks."
  • 00:31:01.110 --> 00:31:05.050
  • And in fact, even more than that, he's not afraid to
  • 00:31:05.060 --> 00:31:08.060
  • challenge the other rabbis of the day.
  • 00:31:08.070 --> 00:31:12.030
  • He's not afraid to give them what God
  • 00:31:12.040 --> 00:31:14.020
  • is thinking in the moment.
  • 00:31:14.030 --> 00:31:16.220
  • For example, midway through this sermon I'm talking about,
  • 00:31:16.230 --> 00:31:19.010
  • Matthew chapter 5, 6 and 7, Jesus lands on something.
  • 00:31:19.020 --> 00:31:22.190
  • Here's what he says.
  • 00:31:22.200 --> 00:31:24.010
  • He says: "'You've heard it said of old, you've heard Moses
  • 00:31:24.020 --> 00:31:28.120
  • say to you that "you should not commit adultery."
  • 00:31:28.130 --> 00:31:32.210
  • That's what you've heard.
  • 00:31:32.220 --> 00:31:34.230
  • But I say to you,'" and I know this part, "if any man looks
  • 00:31:34.240 --> 00:31:40.020
  • at a woman to lust after her, you've already committed
  • 00:31:40.030 --> 00:31:44.170
  • adultery in your heart."
  • 00:31:44.180 --> 00:31:46.290
  • He wasn't afraid to tell them the deeper truth.
  • 00:31:47.000 --> 00:31:51.000
  • And the deeper truth was that, listen, this isn't about
  • 00:31:51.010 --> 00:31:53.000
  • just technically mastering your behavior.
  • 00:31:53.010 --> 00:31:55.240
  • This is about a shift in perspective
  • 00:31:55.250 --> 00:31:59.010
  • and a life that flows out of that.
  • 00:31:59.020 --> 00:32:01.070
  • He's saying, "I want you to know, God's real plan is not
  • 00:32:01.080 --> 00:32:04.030
  • just for you to avoid adultery.
  • 00:32:04.040 --> 00:32:06.150
  • God wants you to look at the ladies in your life as mothers
  • 00:32:06.160 --> 00:32:09.240
  • or sisters or daughters or holy and precious friends,
  • 00:32:09.250 --> 00:32:14.070
  • except for the one he gives you as your wife.
  • 00:32:14.080 --> 00:32:17.210
  • And with her, you can," and I'll leave it there.
  • 00:32:17.220 --> 00:32:21.190
  • And big, broad, "Do not commit adultery," becomes,
  • 00:32:21.200 --> 00:32:31.030
  • "Wow, God's concerned about the sacredness of life
  • 00:32:31.040 --> 00:32:36.100
  • and the dignity of humanity."
  • 00:32:36.110 --> 00:32:40.110
  • Big, broad becomes, "Wow, God's not just concerned
  • 00:32:40.120 --> 00:32:43.050
  • with my behavior, he's concerned with my thought life.
  • 00:32:43.060 --> 00:32:46.120
  • He's not just concerned with my outer world,
  • 00:32:46.130 --> 00:32:48.060
  • he's concerned with my inner world."
  • 00:32:48.070 --> 00:32:50.190
  • Terry: "Maybe even, like the other rabbis,
  • 00:32:51.150 --> 00:32:52.290
  • I have my traditions, I have my perspectives,
  • 00:32:53.000 --> 00:32:55.140
  • but what am I gonna do?
  • 00:32:55.150 --> 00:32:56.240
  • I'm gonna lay all of that at the feet of Jesus,
  • 00:32:56.250 --> 00:32:59.120
  • the Master Teacher.
  • 00:32:59.130 --> 00:33:00.240
  • I'm gonna receive his authority into my life, and I'm going to
  • 00:33:00.250 --> 00:33:03.210
  • let him tell me how God wants me to live because that kind
  • 00:33:03.220 --> 00:33:08.070
  • of life is the best kind of life.
  • 00:33:08.080 --> 00:33:10.120
  • It leads to a life of righteousness
  • 00:33:10.130 --> 00:33:12.220
  • and peace and joy."
  • 00:33:12.230 --> 00:33:14.210
  • teaching, he said, "You've heard it said that 'you shall not
  • 00:33:21.250 --> 00:33:24.220
  • murder,' but I say to you that if you're angry unjustly, and
  • 00:33:24.230 --> 00:33:31.220
  • you're not treating people with grace and compassion
  • 00:33:31.230 --> 00:33:34.250
  • and kindness and mercy, it's all the same."
  • 00:33:34.260 --> 00:33:40.060
  • Jesus, the Master Teacher, draws a line with such clarity
  • 00:33:40.070 --> 00:33:47.070
  • that it deals with our inner world.
  • 00:33:47.080 --> 00:33:49.010
  • And now, maybe, and I'll close with this, maybe now you
  • 00:33:49.020 --> 00:33:51.130
  • understand why all of humanity fits into one of two categories.
  • 00:33:51.140 --> 00:33:58.000
  • Maybe it makes a little more sense to you.
  • 00:33:58.010 --> 00:34:00.050
  • You can live in that space in between until you know
  • 00:34:00.060 --> 00:34:01.270
  • what his teachings are.
  • 00:34:01.280 --> 00:34:03.280
  • And when you know what his teachings are, you either
  • 00:34:03.290 --> 00:34:07.080
  • worship him, you adore him, you love him, and you lean on him
  • 00:34:07.090 --> 00:34:12.230
  • to empower you, to forgive you, to release you, to lift you,
  • 00:34:12.240 --> 00:34:17.010
  • and to give you his righteousness as a free gift,
  • 00:34:17.020 --> 00:34:21.010
  • or you say, "I'll not receive his authority," and you
  • 00:34:21.020 --> 00:34:25.090
  • end up over in this camp having rejected him.
  • 00:34:25.100 --> 00:34:29.290
  • It's impossible to really understand the teachings
  • 00:34:30.000 --> 00:34:33.090
  • of Jesus and not have the human heart
  • 00:34:33.100 --> 00:34:36.120
  • respond with acceptance or rejection.
  • 00:34:36.130 --> 00:34:40.180
  • So, what do we do with that?
  • 00:34:40.190 --> 00:34:42.120
  • Well, here's what I encourage you to do with it.
  • 00:34:42.130 --> 00:34:44.190
  • Accept his authority. Accept his authority.
  • 00:34:44.200 --> 00:34:50.020
  • Accept the fact that we, limited and finite, with what experience
  • 00:34:50.030 --> 00:34:55.150
  • we have, can only see the world as we see it.
  • 00:34:55.160 --> 00:34:58.170
  • But he, Jesus, being God, he, Jesus, being a part of the
  • 00:34:58.180 --> 00:35:03.230
  • Creation of the world as indistinguished from God our
  • 00:35:03.240 --> 00:35:07.120
  • Father in heaven, he, Jesus, understanding the purpose
  • 00:35:07.130 --> 00:35:10.260
  • of God in humanity, he gets it.
  • 00:35:10.270 --> 00:35:13.040
  • He sees what I can't see.
  • 00:35:13.050 --> 00:35:14.260
  • He understands what I can't understand.
  • 00:35:14.270 --> 00:35:16.260
  • So, when it all comes down to it, I have to say,
  • 00:35:16.270 --> 00:35:19.260
  • "All right, I've got my opinions.
  • 00:35:19.270 --> 00:35:21.280
  • Maybe even, like the other rabbis, I have my traditions,
  • 00:35:21.290 --> 00:35:24.270
  • I have my perspectives, but what am I gonna do?
  • 00:35:24.280 --> 00:35:27.080
  • I'm gonna lay all of that at the feet of Jesus,
  • 00:35:27.090 --> 00:35:29.270
  • the Master Teacher.
  • 00:35:29.280 --> 00:35:31.160
  • I'm gonna receive his authority into my life,
  • 00:35:31.170 --> 00:35:33.240
  • and I'm going to let him tell me how God wants me to live
  • 00:35:33.250 --> 00:35:37.250
  • because that kind of life is the best kind of life.
  • 00:35:37.260 --> 00:35:40.240
  • It leads to a life of righteousness
  • 00:35:40.250 --> 00:35:43.090
  • and peace and joy."
  • 00:35:43.100 --> 00:35:46.180
  • What do we do with Jesus, the Master Teacher?
  • 00:35:46.190 --> 00:35:50.080
  • And then, finally, I wanna encourage us
  • 00:35:50.090 --> 00:35:52.010
  • to go back to the Book.
  • 00:35:52.020 --> 00:35:53.290
  • My prayer this morning is, in this simple message,
  • 00:35:54.000 --> 00:35:56.270
  • simple point is: May we fall in love with the Author
  • 00:35:56.280 --> 00:36:01.290
  • and with what he has written to us.
  • 00:36:02.000 --> 00:36:05.190
  • And may we see this as bread. May we see this as light.
  • 00:36:05.200 --> 00:36:10.190
  • May we see this as wisdom.
  • 00:36:10.200 --> 00:36:13.140
  • May we see this as enlightenment.
  • 00:36:13.150 --> 00:36:16.150
  • May we see this as the record of God's self-disclosure.
  • 00:36:16.160 --> 00:36:21.100
  • And may we pore through the Scriptures.
  • 00:36:21.110 --> 00:36:23.030
  • May we, Hillsong Church, again renew our commitment
  • 00:36:23.040 --> 00:36:26.110
  • to God's Word.
  • 00:36:26.120 --> 00:36:28.040
  • And as the world around us is adrift, and as opinions are
  • 00:36:28.050 --> 00:36:30.240
  • floating, and as truth, and counter-truth, and opposite
  • 00:36:30.250 --> 00:36:33.290
  • truth, and all these sorts of things are taking place around
  • 00:36:34.000 --> 00:36:36.260
  • us, may we not allow any of that to lead us and guide us.
  • 00:36:36.270 --> 00:36:40.190
  • But may we be led and may we be guided and may we be elevated
  • 00:36:40.200 --> 00:36:44.240
  • and empowered and inspired and positioned by God's Word.
  • 00:36:44.250 --> 00:36:49.160
  • May we be a people of the Word of God, completely
  • 00:36:49.170 --> 00:36:53.000
  • in love with the Master Teacher.
  • 00:36:53.010 --> 00:36:56.200
  • Brian: Well, I'm glad you've joined us on the Hillsong
  • 00:36:59.040 --> 00:37:00.280
  • Channel, and I wanna ask you a question, a personal question.
  • 00:37:00.290 --> 00:37:04.160
  • Have you ever made a conscious decision to surrender ownership
  • 00:37:04.170 --> 00:37:07.220
  • of your life to the Lord Jesus Christ?
  • 00:37:07.230 --> 00:37:10.180
  • Have you ever encountered him in a personal way?
  • 00:37:10.190 --> 00:37:13.050
  • By that, I don't mean that you necessarily saw him, but
  • 00:37:13.060 --> 00:37:16.020
  • you know that you know that there was a day when
  • 00:37:16.030 --> 00:37:18.200
  • something changed, when something happened.
  • 00:37:18.210 --> 00:37:20.240
  • Jesus came into your life.
  • 00:37:20.250 --> 00:37:22.270
  • You see, the Bible says, "If you ask him into your life,
  • 00:37:22.280 --> 00:37:25.000
  • he will come in and he will live in you."
  • 00:37:25.010 --> 00:37:28.050
  • What a beautiful promise.
  • 00:37:30.260 --> 00:37:32.120
  • Maybe at some point, you prayed a prayer like that,
  • 00:37:32.130 --> 00:37:34.190
  • but somewhere along the way, you lost your way.
  • 00:37:34.200 --> 00:37:37.080
  • Well, it's not as though God moves.
  • 00:37:37.090 --> 00:37:39.080
  • He said, "I'll never leave you nor forsake you."
  • 00:37:39.090 --> 00:37:41.130
  • I love the fact that he saves us, but the Bible
  • 00:37:41.140 --> 00:37:43.230
  • never says he unsaves us.
  • 00:37:43.240 --> 00:37:45.250
  • But we all make our own choices, and we can make choices that
  • 00:37:45.260 --> 00:37:48.220
  • have us living dislocated or alienated
  • 00:37:48.230 --> 00:37:51.090
  • from the center of God's will.
  • 00:37:51.100 --> 00:37:53.110
  • I couldn't think of a more perfect time to come back
  • 00:37:53.120 --> 00:37:56.020
  • and say, "Jesus, I need you in my life.
  • 00:37:56.030 --> 00:37:58.160
  • I'm coming back to living out of an ongoing
  • 00:37:58.170 --> 00:38:00.260
  • relationship with you."
  • 00:38:00.270 --> 00:38:02.290
  • So I'm gonna lead you in a prayer.
  • 00:38:03.000 --> 00:38:04.180
  • This is a prayer of salvation.
  • 00:38:04.190 --> 00:38:06.130
  • If you'll pray this prayer along with me to the Lord Jesus
  • 00:38:06.140 --> 00:38:09.050
  • Christ, I believe this can be your day.
  • 00:38:09.060 --> 00:38:11.230
  • This can be the beginning of a brand-new chapter in your life
  • 00:38:11.240 --> 00:38:15.100
  • with Jesus as your Lord and your Savior.
  • 00:38:15.110 --> 00:38:18.020
  • So are you ready for that, ready to join me in prayer?
  • 00:38:18.030 --> 00:38:21.070
  • Here we go: "Dear Jesus, I recognize my need of you.
  • 00:38:21.080 --> 00:38:26.230
  • I thank you that you can bring salvation to my life.
  • 00:38:26.240 --> 00:38:30.170
  • You can forgive me of my past failures and mistakes and give
  • 00:38:30.180 --> 00:38:33.200
  • me a brand-new beginning and a brand-new start.
  • 00:38:33.210 --> 00:38:37.000
  • So at this moment, I say, Jesus, come into my life.
  • 00:38:37.010 --> 00:38:40.200
  • I recognize because of you, from this time, I'm a child of God,
  • 00:38:40.210 --> 00:38:45.060
  • a new creation, a follower of Jesus Christ.
  • 00:38:45.070 --> 00:38:49.000
  • My sins are forgiven. It's a brand-new day.
  • 00:38:49.010 --> 00:38:52.190
  • Thank you for your love and grace.
  • 00:38:52.200 --> 00:38:54.170
  • Thank you for your forgiveness and mercy.
  • 00:38:54.180 --> 00:38:57.000
  • I am a believer. Jesus is alive in me, amen."
  • 00:38:57.010 --> 00:39:02.020
  • Now, if you just prayed that prayer from your heart, then
  • 00:39:03.140 --> 00:39:05.290
  • could I encourage you to do whatever you can to get a Bible,
  • 00:39:06.000 --> 00:39:09.140
  • get along to a great, life-giving local church where
  • 00:39:09.150 --> 00:39:12.200
  • Jesus is proclaimed?
  • 00:39:12.210 --> 00:39:14.240
  • And most of all, if you can connect with other believers,
  • 00:39:14.250 --> 00:39:17.260
  • it's just gonna make that walk so much easier.
  • 00:39:17.270 --> 00:39:20.040
  • God bless you.
  • 00:39:20.050 --> 00:39:21.280
  • You are the Lord Almighty,
  • 00:39:22.200 --> 00:39:26.200
  • outshining all the stars in glory.
  • 00:39:26.210 --> 00:39:31.240
  • Your love is like the wildest ocean.
  • 00:39:31.250 --> 00:39:36.140
  • Oh, nothing else compares.
  • 00:39:36.150 --> 00:39:41.080
  • 00:39:42.030 --> 00:39:52.010
  • My hope is built on nothing less
  • 00:39:55.000 --> 00:40:01.240
  • than Jesus' blood and righteousness.
  • 00:40:01.250 --> 00:40:08.090
  • I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
  • 00:40:08.100 --> 00:40:15.020
  • but wholly trust in Jesus' name.
  • 00:40:15.030 --> 00:40:20.180
  • Christ alone,
  • 00:40:23.040 --> 00:40:26.110
  • Cornerstone.
  • 00:40:26.120 --> 00:40:29.220
  • Weak made strong
  • 00:40:29.230 --> 00:40:32.210
  • in the Savior's love.
  • 00:40:32.220 --> 00:40:36.130
  • Through the storm,
  • 00:40:36.140 --> 00:40:39.230
  • he is Lord, Lord of all.
  • 00:40:39.240 --> 00:40:46.270
  • 00:40:47.190 --> 00:40:51.190
  • When darkness seems to hide his face,
  • 00:40:52.040 --> 00:40:58.190
  • I rest on his unchanging grace.
  • 00:40:58.200 --> 00:41:05.150
  • In every high and stormy gale,
  • 00:41:05.160 --> 00:41:12.030
  • my anchor holds within the veil.
  • 00:41:12.040 --> 00:41:17.170
  • My anchor holds within the veil, oh.
  • 00:41:18.260 --> 00:41:26.210
  • Christ alone,
  • 00:41:26.250 --> 00:41:30.050
  • Cornerstone.
  • 00:41:30.060 --> 00:41:33.130
  • Weak made strong
  • 00:41:33.140 --> 00:41:36.130
  • in the Savior's love.
  • 00:41:36.140 --> 00:41:40.050
  • Through the storm,
  • 00:41:40.060 --> 00:41:43.140
  • he is Lord, Lord of all.
  • 00:41:43.150 --> 00:41:52.000
  • He is Lord,
  • 00:41:53.240 --> 00:42:00.100
  • Lord of all.
  • 00:42:00.110 --> 00:42:05.090
  • David: Christ alone.
  • 00:42:05.100 --> 00:42:07.020
  • Christ alone,
  • 00:42:07.030 --> 00:42:10.120
  • Cornerstone.
  • 00:42:10.130 --> 00:42:13.230
  • Weak made strong
  • 00:42:13.240 --> 00:42:16.230
  • in the Savior's love.
  • 00:42:16.240 --> 00:42:20.110
  • Through the storm,
  • 00:42:20.120 --> 00:42:23.220
  • he is Lord, Lord of all, yeah.
  • 00:42:23.230 --> 00:42:33.150
  • Christ alone,
  • 00:42:33.270 --> 00:42:37.060
  • Cornerstone.
  • 00:42:37.070 --> 00:42:40.150
  • Weak made strong
  • 00:42:40.160 --> 00:42:43.210
  • in the Savior's love.
  • 00:42:43.220 --> 00:42:47.100
  • Through the storm,
  • 00:42:47.110 --> 00:42:50.210
  • he is Lord, Lord of all.
  • 00:42:50.220 --> 00:42:59.040
  • 00:42:59.190 --> 00:43:08.260
  • When he shall come with trumpet sound,
  • 00:43:09.210 --> 00:43:16.140
  • oh, may I then in him be found, oh, yeah.
  • 00:43:16.150 --> 00:43:23.030
  • Dressed in his righteousness alone,
  • 00:43:23.040 --> 00:43:29.260
  • faultless stand before the throne.
  • 00:43:29.270 --> 00:43:35.200
  • Oh, yeah, Lord.
  • 00:43:39.060 --> 00:43:41.160
  • 00:43:41.170 --> 00:43:51.080
  • 00:43:51.190 --> 00:44:01.210
  • 00:44:02.050 --> 00:44:12.030
  • Christ alone,
  • 00:44:12.190 --> 00:44:14.200
  • Cornerstone.
  • 00:44:14.210 --> 00:44:18.000
  • Weak made strong
  • 00:44:18.010 --> 00:44:21.030
  • in the Savior's love.
  • 00:44:21.040 --> 00:44:24.200
  • Through the storm,
  • 00:44:24.210 --> 00:44:28.020
  • he is Lord, Lord of all.
  • 00:44:28.030 --> 00:44:36.020
  • Christ alone,
  • 00:44:38.140 --> 00:44:41.150
  • Cornerstone,
  • 00:44:41.160 --> 00:44:43.040
  • Cornerstone.
  • 00:44:43.050 --> 00:44:44.250
  • Weak made strong, oh, yeah,
  • 00:44:44.260 --> 00:44:48.100
  • in the Savior's love, in the Savior's love.
  • 00:44:48.110 --> 00:44:51.170
  • Through the storm,
  • 00:44:51.180 --> 00:44:54.250
  • he is Lord, Lord of all, yeah.
  • 00:44:54.260 --> 00:45:04.200
  • Christ alone,
  • 00:45:05.120 --> 00:45:08.090
  • Cornerstone.
  • 00:45:08.100 --> 00:45:11.210
  • Weak made strong
  • 00:45:11.220 --> 00:45:14.190
  • in the Savior's love.
  • 00:45:14.200 --> 00:45:18.100
  • Through the storm,
  • 00:45:18.110 --> 00:45:21.230
  • he is Lord, Lord of all, yeah.
  • 00:45:21.240 --> 00:45:31.160
  • Christ alone,
  • 00:45:31.280 --> 00:45:35.050
  • Cornerstone.
  • 00:45:35.060 --> 00:45:38.150
  • Weak made strong
  • 00:45:38.160 --> 00:45:41.160
  • in the Savior's love.
  • 00:45:41.170 --> 00:45:45.060
  • Through the storm,
  • 00:45:45.070 --> 00:45:48.170
  • he is Lord, Lord of all.
  • 00:45:48.180 --> 00:45:56.090
  • Oh, you are, you will always be there,
  • 00:45:58.130 --> 00:46:03.120
  • oh, yeah.
  • 00:46:03.130 --> 00:46:05.110
  • 00:46:05.120 --> 00:46:10.220
  • [congregation applauding]
  • 00:46:11.250 --> 00:46:20.030
  • 00:46:20.130 --> 00:46:30.110
  • 00:46:31.080 --> 00:46:36.090
  • Your love so great,
  • 00:46:38.100 --> 00:46:40.170
  • Jesus, in all things.
  • 00:46:40.180 --> 00:46:44.220
  • I've seen a glimpse of your heart.
  • 00:46:44.230 --> 00:46:48.100
  • A billion years, still I'll be singing.
  • 00:46:48.110 --> 00:46:55.000
  • How can I praise you enough.
  • 00:46:55.010 --> 00:46:58.140
  • Reuben Morgan: Come on.
  • 00:46:59.160 --> 00:47:00.270
  • How can I praise You enough.
  • 00:47:00.280 --> 00:47:03.230
  • You are the Lord Almighty,
  • 00:47:06.220 --> 00:47:11.010
  • outshining all the stars in glory.
  • 00:47:11.020 --> 00:47:16.040
  • Your love is like the wildest ocean.
  • 00:47:16.050 --> 00:47:21.000
  • Oh, nothing else compares.
  • 00:47:21.010 --> 00:47:25.160
  • Creation calls all to the Savior.
  • 00:47:28.260 --> 00:47:35.250
  • We are alive for your praise.
  • 00:47:35.260 --> 00:47:38.280
  • In earth and sky,
  • 00:47:38.290 --> 00:47:41.250
  • no one is higher.
  • 00:47:41.260 --> 00:47:46.020
  • Our God of wonders, you reign.
  • 00:47:46.030 --> 00:47:50.070
  • Our God of wonders, you reign.
  • 00:47:51.070 --> 00:47:55.070
  • You are the Lord Almighty,
  • 00:47:57.190 --> 00:48:02.040
  • outshining all the stars in glory.
  • 00:48:02.050 --> 00:48:07.060
  • Your love is like the wildest ocean.
  • 00:48:07.070 --> 00:48:12.040
  • Oh, nothing else compares.
  • 00:48:12.050 --> 00:48:17.290
  • You are the Lord Almighty,
  • 00:48:18.000 --> 00:48:22.150
  • outshining all the stars in glory.
  • 00:48:22.160 --> 00:48:27.190
  • Your love is like the wildest ocean.
  • 00:48:27.200 --> 00:48:32.180
  • Oh, nothing else compares.
  • 00:48:32.190 --> 00:48:37.140
  • 00:48:38.010 --> 00:48:48.010
  • 00:48:48.080 --> 00:48:49.200
  • Not to us, but to your name,
  • 00:48:50.080 --> 00:48:54.260
  • we lift up all praise.
  • 00:48:54.270 --> 00:49:00.110
  • Not to us, but to your name,
  • 00:49:00.120 --> 00:49:05.060
  • we lift up all praise.
  • 00:49:05.070 --> 00:49:10.150
  • Not to us, but to your name,
  • 00:49:10.160 --> 00:49:15.120
  • we lift up all praise.
  • 00:49:15.130 --> 00:49:20.190
  • Not to us, but to your name,
  • 00:49:20.200 --> 00:49:25.190
  • we lift up all praise.
  • 00:49:25.200 --> 00:49:29.240
  • You are the Lord Almighty,
  • 00:49:29.250 --> 00:49:33.290
  • outshining all the stars in glory.
  • 00:49:34.000 --> 00:49:39.000
  • Your love is like the wildest ocean.
  • 00:49:39.010 --> 00:49:44.040
  • Oh, nothing else compares.
  • 00:49:44.050 --> 00:49:49.240
  • You are the Lord Almighty,
  • 00:49:49.250 --> 00:49:54.120
  • outshining all the stars in glory.
  • 00:49:54.130 --> 00:49:59.120
  • Your love is like the wildest ocean.
  • 00:49:59.130 --> 00:50:04.160
  • Oh, nothing else compares.
  • 00:50:04.170 --> 00:50:09.060
  • Not to us, but to your name,
  • 00:50:11.190 --> 00:50:16.150
  • we lift up all praise.
  • 00:50:16.160 --> 00:50:20.140
  • David: All praise.
  • 00:50:20.150 --> 00:50:22.000
  • Not to us, but to your name,
  • 00:50:22.010 --> 00:50:26.260
  • we lift up all praise.
  • 00:50:26.270 --> 00:50:29.290
  • Reuben: Come on, lift it up.
  • 00:50:30.000 --> 00:50:32.000
  • Not to us, but to your name,
  • 00:50:32.010 --> 00:50:37.030
  • we lift up all praise.
  • 00:50:37.040 --> 00:50:42.070
  • Not to us, but to your name,
  • 00:50:42.080 --> 00:50:47.080
  • we lift up all praise.
  • 00:50:47.090 --> 00:50:51.050
  • You are the Lord Almighty--
  • 00:50:51.060 --> 00:50:54.130
  • Reuben: Every voice.
  • 00:50:54.140 --> 00:50:55.230
  • Outshining all the stars in glory.
  • 00:50:55.240 --> 00:51:00.210
  • Your love is like the wildest ocean.
  • 00:51:00.220 --> 00:51:05.180
  • Oh, nothing else compares.
  • 00:51:05.190 --> 00:51:11.180
  • You are the Lord Almighty,
  • 00:51:11.190 --> 00:51:16.030
  • outshining all the stars in glory.
  • 00:51:16.040 --> 00:51:21.060
  • Your love is like the wildest ocean.
  • 00:51:21.070 --> 00:51:25.290
  • Oh, nothing else compares.
  • 00:51:26.000 --> 00:51:30.100
  • [congregation applauding]
  • 00:51:33.000 --> 00:51:40.120
