  • Brian Houston: Well, hi there, we're Brian
  • 00:00:01.160 --> 00:00:02.170
  • and Bobbie Houston, and we're the senior pastors
  • 00:00:02.180 --> 00:00:03.090
  • of Hillsong Church.
  • 00:00:03.100 --> 00:00:04.220
  • As a matter of fact, we have been for 33 years now.
  • 00:00:04.230 --> 00:00:07.100
  • And today we're blessed 'cause our church is around the globe
  • 00:00:07.110 --> 00:00:10.090
  • in many wonderful, great cities.
  • 00:00:10.100 --> 00:00:12.260
  • To build the church with other people is a huge blessing, and
  • 00:00:12.270 --> 00:00:15.190
  • I'm so proud of all our lead pastors.
  • 00:00:15.200 --> 00:00:18.060
  • The way they preach and teach and lead is so exciting.
  • 00:00:18.070 --> 00:00:22.040
  • Most of them are a little younger than Bobbie and I, which
  • 00:00:22.050 --> 00:00:24.200
  • is great, but they have so much power and potential.
  • 00:00:24.210 --> 00:00:27.240
  • So, right now you're gonna hear from one of our lead pastors or
  • 00:00:27.250 --> 00:00:32.150
  • someone else in our team speaking from Hillsong Church.
  • 00:00:32.160 --> 00:00:35.240
  • And I believe this message can bless you, can build you,
  • 00:00:35.250 --> 00:00:39.260
  • can strengthen you.
  • 00:00:39.270 --> 00:00:40.250
  • So tune in.
  • 00:00:40.260 --> 00:00:42.050
  • Don't get distracted.
  • 00:00:42.060 --> 00:00:43.100
  • God wants to do something good in your life right now.
  • 00:00:43.110 --> 00:00:47.040

  • 00:00:55.270 --> 00:01:00.110
  • Terry Crist: Hello, and welcome to Hillsong Church
  • 00:01:03.210 --> 00:01:05.100
  • Phoenix.
  • 00:01:05.110 --> 00:01:06.160
  • We meet all across the Phoenix Valley, from the beautiful
  • 00:01:06.170 --> 00:01:09.030
  • suburbs to the working-class neighborhoods right to
  • 00:01:09.040 --> 00:01:12.210
  • the downtown urban core.
  • 00:01:12.220 --> 00:01:14.170
  • We love this city, from its rugged beauty to its youthful
  • 00:01:14.180 --> 00:01:18.180
  • energy to its rich melting-pot diversity.
  • 00:01:18.190 --> 00:01:22.070
  • All of those things are a picture of what makes this
  • 00:01:22.080 --> 00:01:25.040
  • community so great.
  • 00:01:25.050 --> 00:01:26.090
  • But most of all, we love the people who live here, and
  • 00:01:26.100 --> 00:01:30.010
  • our heart is to see their lives transformed with the love
  • 00:01:30.020 --> 00:01:34.050
  • and grace of Jesus.
  • 00:01:34.060 --> 00:01:35.180
  • I'm Terry Crist, the lead pastor of Hillsong Phoenix along with
  • 00:01:35.190 --> 00:01:38.280
  • my wife, Judith.
  • 00:01:38.290 --> 00:01:40.030
  • And I'm so excited that you've taken time to join us on
  • 00:01:40.040 --> 00:01:44.020
  • the Hillsong Channel for one of our weekend services.
  • 00:01:44.030 --> 00:01:47.090
  • I'm sharing a message today that I believe has the potential
  • 00:01:47.100 --> 00:01:49.260
  • to change your life.
  • 00:01:49.270 --> 00:01:52.080
  • Terry: If you wanna know what God wants for your life, look at
  • 00:01:52.260 --> 00:01:55.280
  • Jesus because in Jesus are all of the riches of our salvation.
  • 00:01:55.290 --> 00:02:00.210
  • And as we live in him and move in him and have our being in
  • 00:02:00.220 --> 00:02:04.060
  • him, God looks at us in Jesus Christ and he sees us holy and
  • 00:02:04.070 --> 00:02:09.020
  • accepted and blameless in him.
  • 00:02:09.030 --> 00:02:11.090
  • Terry: Would you give a great big welcome to everybody joining
  • 00:02:12.280 --> 00:02:15.120
  • us on the Hillsong Channel here this morning?
  • 00:02:15.130 --> 00:02:18.060
  • Welcome to Phoenix.
  • 00:02:18.070 --> 00:02:20.030
  • Welcome to Hillsong Church.
  • 00:02:20.040 --> 00:02:24.030
  • If you have your Bibles this morning, I wanna invite you to
  • 00:02:24.040 --> 00:02:26.140
  • take them and turn with me to Ephesians chapter 2,
  • 00:02:26.150 --> 00:02:30.010
  • Ephesians chapter 2.
  • 00:02:30.020 --> 00:02:32.220
  • And for those who are our guests here today, we've spent the past
  • 00:02:32.230 --> 00:02:35.240
  • few weeks looking, strangely enough, at the genealogy of
  • 00:02:35.250 --> 00:02:39.200
  • Jesus.
  • 00:02:39.210 --> 00:02:40.280
  • We've looked at it through his mother, Mary, and through his
  • 00:02:40.290 --> 00:02:43.280
  • adoptive father, Joseph.
  • 00:02:43.290 --> 00:02:45.290
  • And as we've looked at his family tree, we've discovered
  • 00:02:46.000 --> 00:02:49.120
  • some interesting things.
  • 00:02:49.130 --> 00:02:51.020
  • We've seen who he is.
  • 00:02:51.030 --> 00:02:53.010
  • We've also seen what he has provided for us.
  • 00:02:53.020 --> 00:02:56.090
  • And last week, we even discovered that, like most of
  • 00:02:56.100 --> 00:03:00.030
  • our family trees, Jesus' family tree also contains some really
  • 00:03:00.040 --> 00:03:05.120
  • shady characters who serve as powerful examples of the scandal
  • 00:03:05.130 --> 00:03:10.270
  • and the beauty of grace.
  • 00:03:10.280 --> 00:03:12.290
  • And all of that leads me this morning to what I really wanna
  • 00:03:13.000 --> 00:03:15.100
  • talk to you about.
  • 00:03:15.110 --> 00:03:16.270
  • What I wanna share with you is, in many ways, a running theme
  • 00:03:16.280 --> 00:03:21.070
  • for me.
  • 00:03:21.080 --> 00:03:22.140
  • If you've been a part of this journey for any length of time,
  • 00:03:22.150 --> 00:03:24.220
  • then you may have noticed by now that about every 18 months or
  • 00:03:24.230 --> 00:03:28.160
  • so, I like to circle right back around and take a weekend to
  • 00:03:28.170 --> 00:03:32.190
  • talk about some of these very principles.
  • 00:03:32.200 --> 00:03:35.240
  • Not just because they're a great idea, but because these are the
  • 00:03:35.250 --> 00:03:39.220
  • principles that have changed and shaped my life.
  • 00:03:39.230 --> 00:03:44.090
  • And so this morning, I wanna take about 30 minutes and I
  • 00:03:44.100 --> 00:03:46.250
  • wanna talk to you about the DNA of a Christian.
  • 00:03:46.260 --> 00:03:51.170
  • I think there are many misconceptions about what it
  • 00:03:51.180 --> 00:03:54.030
  • means to be a follower of Jesus Christ, and much of it relates
  • 00:03:54.040 --> 00:03:58.170
  • back to how we see our identity in his family tree.
  • 00:03:58.180 --> 00:04:04.030
  • And by the way, I'm about 4 weeks into researching my own
  • 00:04:04.040 --> 00:04:07.110
  • family tree, as many of you will know from the first message.
  • 00:04:07.120 --> 00:04:10.240
  • And this past week, I got really close to giving up.
  • 00:04:10.250 --> 00:04:15.120
  • In fact, I think I hit the breaking point when I looked out
  • 00:04:15.130 --> 00:04:19.110
  • the window and realized that I have trees in my yard that are
  • 00:04:19.120 --> 00:04:23.170
  • growing faster than my ancestry.com tree.
  • 00:04:23.180 --> 00:04:28.260
  • Putting your family tree together, even with software, is
  • 00:04:28.270 --> 00:04:32.240
  • long and slow and painstaking.
  • 00:04:32.250 --> 00:04:35.170
  • But then I discovered this little button on the top side of
  • 00:04:35.180 --> 00:04:39.200
  • the website and I remembered that somebody told me there is
  • 00:04:39.210 --> 00:04:43.140
  • an easier way to research your origins.
  • 00:04:43.150 --> 00:04:48.080
  • It's the DNA approach to finding your family tree.
  • 00:04:48.090 --> 00:04:52.180
  • If you sign up for that program, all you have to do is provide a
  • 00:04:52.190 --> 00:04:57.050
  • swab with saliva on it and somebody will research your DNA
  • 00:04:57.060 --> 00:05:01.270
  • for you.
  • 00:05:01.280 --> 00:05:03.140
  • Come on, how awesome is that?
  • 00:05:03.150 --> 00:05:05.180
  • That's my kind of research.
  • 00:05:05.190 --> 00:05:07.170
  • You can just lick something and get an answer.
  • 00:05:07.180 --> 00:05:10.130
  • Let's think how different the world would be today if we could
  • 00:05:10.140 --> 00:05:15.160
  • just lick something and get the answer that we need to anything
  • 00:05:15.170 --> 00:05:19.070
  • in life.
  • 00:05:19.080 --> 00:05:20.170
  • Well, this morning, I wanna engage in that kind of research
  • 00:05:20.180 --> 00:05:25.100
  • without the licking.
  • 00:05:25.110 --> 00:05:26.210
  • We're gonna take a spiritual DNA test, and you're not gonna have
  • 00:05:26.220 --> 00:05:31.170
  • to wait 6 to 8 weeks to find out who you are.
  • 00:05:31.180 --> 00:05:35.100
  • You're not going to have to wait for an invitation to appear from
  • 00:05:35.110 --> 00:05:39.250
  • the "Maury Povich" show.
  • 00:05:39.260 --> 00:05:41.150
  • You're not going to leave here today wondering what your
  • 00:05:41.160 --> 00:05:44.120
  • paternity is or your ancestry is.
  • 00:05:44.130 --> 00:05:47.040
  • In fact, you're gonna leave here this morning knowing exactly who
  • 00:05:47.050 --> 00:05:50.080
  • you are.
  • 00:05:50.090 --> 00:05:52.060
  • Say, "How can you make such a radical promise?"
  • 00:05:52.070 --> 00:05:54.230
  • Because the answers are found right here in the Bible.
  • 00:05:54.240 --> 00:05:58.250
  • And more specifically, they're highly concentrated in one
  • 00:05:58.260 --> 00:06:03.040
  • section of the Bible.
  • 00:06:03.050 --> 00:06:04.250
  • You can read all through the Bible and you'll find these
  • 00:06:04.260 --> 00:06:07.080
  • principles time and time again.
  • 00:06:07.090 --> 00:06:09.120
  • But I wanna dial in this morning and focus in on the book of
  • 00:06:09.130 --> 00:06:13.140
  • Ephesians because the book of Ephesians is devoted to helping
  • 00:06:13.150 --> 00:06:17.220
  • us discover who we are.
  • 00:06:17.230 --> 00:06:20.050
  • In a world that has always longed to make sense of origins
  • 00:06:20.060 --> 00:06:24.280
  • and bloodlines and identity and destiny, God has made clear who
  • 00:06:24.290 --> 00:06:31.060
  • we have become as we put our faith in Jesus to save us.
  • 00:06:31.070 --> 00:06:36.090
  • And he wants us to know who we are because who we are leads
  • 00:06:36.100 --> 00:06:41.200
  • to the kind of behavior that glorifies his name.
  • 00:06:41.210 --> 00:06:46.130
  • Terry: In Adam, we find condemnation, guilt, and shame.
  • 00:06:46.140 --> 00:06:49.250
  • In Jesus, we find freedom from condemnation, guilt, and shame.
  • 00:06:49.260 --> 00:06:55.120
  • In Adam, we receive a sin nature.
  • 00:06:55.130 --> 00:06:57.220
  • In Jesus, we are set free from sin and
  • 00:06:57.230 --> 00:07:00.240
  • we receive a brand-new nature.
  • 00:07:00.250 --> 00:07:02.240
  • 00:07:02.250 --> 00:07:04.250
  • And by the way, this is gonna be an old-school Bible study today
  • 00:07:09.180 --> 00:07:13.030
  • because I wanna read a lot of Bible verses.
  • 00:07:13.040 --> 00:07:16.150
  • We'll begin with Ephesians chapter 2, and beginning with
  • 00:07:16.160 --> 00:07:19.200
  • verse 1: "Once you were dead because of your disobedience and
  • 00:07:19.210 --> 00:07:25.200
  • your many sins.
  • 00:07:25.210 --> 00:07:27.010
  • You used to live in sin, just like the rest of the world,
  • 00:07:27.020 --> 00:07:30.100
  • obeying the devil--the commander of the powers
  • 00:07:30.110 --> 00:07:32.180
  • in the unseen world.
  • 00:07:32.190 --> 00:07:34.090
  • He is the spirit at work in the hearts of those who refuse to
  • 00:07:34.100 --> 00:07:37.250
  • obey God.
  • 00:07:37.260 --> 00:07:39.060
  • All of us used to live that way, following the passionate desires
  • 00:07:39.070 --> 00:07:43.190
  • and inclinations of our sinful nature.
  • 00:07:43.200 --> 00:07:46.200
  • By our very nature we were subject to God's anger, just
  • 00:07:46.210 --> 00:07:50.270
  • like everyone else.
  • 00:07:50.280 --> 00:07:52.130
  • But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, that even
  • 00:07:52.140 --> 00:07:56.210
  • though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when
  • 00:07:56.220 --> 00:08:01.280
  • he raised Christ from the dead.
  • 00:08:01.290 --> 00:08:04.100
  • (It is only by God's grace that you have been saved!)
  • 00:08:04.110 --> 00:08:07.150
  • For he raised us from the dead along with Christ and seated us
  • 00:08:07.160 --> 00:08:11.040
  • with him in the heavenly realms because we are united with
  • 00:08:11.050 --> 00:08:14.140
  • Christ Jesus.
  • 00:08:14.150 --> 00:08:16.160
  • So God can point to us in all future ages as examples of the
  • 00:08:16.170 --> 00:08:21.200
  • incredible wealth of his grace and kindness toward us, as shown
  • 00:08:21.210 --> 00:08:26.200
  • in all he has done for us who are united with Christ Jesus.
  • 00:08:26.210 --> 00:08:31.180
  • God saved you by his grace when you believed.
  • 00:08:31.190 --> 00:08:34.090
  • And you can't take credit for this; it is a gift from God.
  • 00:08:34.100 --> 00:08:39.020
  • Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so
  • 00:08:39.030 --> 00:08:42.120
  • none of us can boast about it.
  • 00:08:42.130 --> 00:08:45.050
  • For we are God's masterpiece."
  • 00:08:45.060 --> 00:08:48.100
  • In fact, I wanna just ask everyone to read that aloud with
  • 00:08:48.110 --> 00:08:51.040
  • me from the screens this morning.
  • 00:08:51.050 --> 00:08:52.280
  • Verse 10: "For we are God's masterpiece.
  • 00:08:52.290 --> 00:08:56.270
  • He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do
  • 00:08:56.280 --> 00:09:01.060
  • the good things he planned for us long ago."
  • 00:09:01.070 --> 00:09:04.210
  • I wanna draw your attention to that word in verse 10:
  • 00:09:04.220 --> 00:09:08.160
  • "He has created us anew."
  • 00:09:08.170 --> 00:09:12.050
  • "Anew," some translations say, "Brand new."
  • 00:09:12.060 --> 00:09:16.270
  • For those who are new to following Jesus, this is
  • 00:09:16.280 --> 00:09:19.250
  • one of the places where we put together the idea of what it
  • 00:09:19.260 --> 00:09:24.000
  • means to be born again, recreated in God, in Christ
  • 00:09:24.010 --> 00:09:29.190
  • Jesus, born anew in him.
  • 00:09:29.200 --> 00:09:32.070
  • Now, I wanna start off this morning by showing you that Paul
  • 00:09:32.080 --> 00:09:35.200
  • begins these passages by, first of all, stating what is not the
  • 00:09:35.210 --> 00:09:41.030
  • case for us.
  • 00:09:41.040 --> 00:09:43.050
  • You may have noticed as we read the verse that it starts off a
  • 00:09:43.060 --> 00:09:46.040
  • little negative.
  • 00:09:46.050 --> 00:09:48.000
  • Paul seems to emphasize what was once wrong with us, what we've
  • 00:09:48.010 --> 00:09:53.090
  • been delivered out of.
  • 00:09:53.100 --> 00:09:55.120
  • And that's really common to most of Paul's writings.
  • 00:09:55.130 --> 00:09:58.070
  • Paul's style is to reveal truth by chipping away at the old
  • 00:09:58.080 --> 00:10:03.030
  • ideas, the old concepts, the old lies, leaving us with the
  • 00:10:03.040 --> 00:10:07.170
  • remains of the new.
  • 00:10:07.180 --> 00:10:09.200
  • It's like the story about Michelangelo, the Italian
  • 00:10:09.210 --> 00:10:13.030
  • sculptor who was once chiseling away at a piece of granite.
  • 00:10:13.040 --> 00:10:17.150
  • Somebody came along and said, "What are you sculpting?"
  • 00:10:17.160 --> 00:10:20.200
  • His reply: "Nothing, I am simply liberating
  • 00:10:20.210 --> 00:10:24.280
  • the angel within this rock."
  • 00:10:24.290 --> 00:10:28.110
  • That's exactly what Paul is doing.
  • 00:10:28.120 --> 00:10:30.070
  • Through all of his writings in the New Testament, Paul is
  • 00:10:30.080 --> 00:10:33.020
  • committed to liberating not the angel within the rock, but he is
  • 00:10:33.030 --> 00:10:37.230
  • committed to liberating the brand-new follower of Jesus
  • 00:10:37.240 --> 00:10:41.010
  • Christ who is still trapped in the old world of his or her
  • 00:10:41.020 --> 00:10:45.030
  • former identity.
  • 00:10:45.040 --> 00:10:47.060
  • So he approaches this by chipping away at the old in
  • 00:10:47.070 --> 00:10:51.290
  • order to contrast who we once were with who we have now become
  • 00:10:52.000 --> 00:10:58.050
  • in Jesus.
  • 00:10:58.060 --> 00:10:59.230
  • He compares our natural-born desires with our born-again
  • 00:10:59.240 --> 00:11:04.010
  • state.
  • 00:11:04.020 --> 00:11:05.130
  • He compares our appetites and inclinations with our tendencies
  • 00:11:05.140 --> 00:11:10.120
  • now, as we live this life of the spirit.
  • 00:11:10.130 --> 00:11:13.260
  • And all of that provides a really distinct contrast that he
  • 00:11:13.270 --> 00:11:17.250
  • wants us to see.
  • 00:11:17.260 --> 00:11:19.010
  • Because the fact is, we all live in one of these two states.
  • 00:11:19.020 --> 00:11:24.140
  • All of humanity is categorized by God in one of two conditions.
  • 00:11:24.150 --> 00:11:34.120
  • That's very different to our way of thinking because we have this
  • 00:11:34.130 --> 00:11:37.070
  • way of subcategorizing people.
  • 00:11:37.080 --> 00:11:41.000
  • We look at people and we categorize them ethnically or
  • 00:11:41.010 --> 00:11:45.180
  • socioeconomically.
  • 00:11:45.190 --> 00:11:47.240
  • We categorize people based on their age or based upon their
  • 00:11:47.250 --> 00:11:53.280
  • gender.
  • 00:11:53.290 --> 00:11:55.020
  • And we all have these subcategories that communicate
  • 00:11:55.030 --> 00:11:58.080
  • to us who people are.
  • 00:11:58.090 --> 00:11:59.270
  • But when it comes to God, all of humanity falls into one of two
  • 00:11:59.280 --> 00:12:05.020
  • primary categories.
  • 00:12:05.030 --> 00:12:06.290
  • We are either in Adam or we are in Jesus Christ.
  • 00:12:07.000 --> 00:12:12.170
  • And to make this point very distinct for us, the Bible even
  • 00:12:12.180 --> 00:12:15.220
  • calls Jesus, "The last Adam," which means we're either in the
  • 00:12:15.230 --> 00:12:20.040
  • first Adam or we are in the last Adam.
  • 00:12:20.050 --> 00:12:23.160
  • Because as far as God concerns, there are two federal heads of
  • 00:12:23.170 --> 00:12:27.220
  • humanity that represent all people, everywhere, down
  • 00:12:27.230 --> 00:12:32.080
  • throughout time and history.
  • 00:12:32.090 --> 00:12:35.140
  • When we were born into this world, we were born into a
  • 00:12:35.150 --> 00:12:39.040
  • lineage, into a family, into a race.
  • 00:12:39.050 --> 00:12:43.170
  • Likewise, when we were born again, we were born into God's
  • 00:12:43.180 --> 00:12:47.010
  • family.
  • 00:12:47.020 --> 00:12:48.060
  • We were given a brand-new personhood, and we have been
  • 00:12:48.070 --> 00:12:51.030
  • made a part of a brand-new humanity.
  • 00:12:51.040 --> 00:12:53.190
  • And Paul wants us to know that we can best understand our new
  • 00:12:53.200 --> 00:12:57.050
  • state of being by contrasting it with who we once were in Adam.
  • 00:12:57.060 --> 00:13:03.180
  • So he starts off writing to us telling us who we were, but he
  • 00:13:03.190 --> 00:13:07.290
  • doesn't want us to stay there.
  • 00:13:08.000 --> 00:13:09.270
  • That's why people sometimes read the writings of Paul and they
  • 00:13:09.280 --> 00:13:13.060
  • say, "Man, it just feels so negative.
  • 00:13:13.070 --> 00:13:16.250
  • He's concentrating on all of these things that enslave
  • 00:13:16.260 --> 00:13:21.120
  • humanity, all of these things that define a life
  • 00:13:21.130 --> 00:13:24.230
  • apart from God."
  • 00:13:24.240 --> 00:13:26.220
  • And my response to that is, yes, but not in order to
  • 00:13:26.230 --> 00:13:31.020
  • encourage us to stay there but in order to show us what we've
  • 00:13:31.030 --> 00:13:34.250
  • been set free from, to show us what we've been liberated from,
  • 00:13:34.260 --> 00:13:38.210
  • to show us by contrast who we've now become by the mercy of God,
  • 00:13:38.220 --> 00:13:43.280
  • by the compassion of God, by the kindness of God, in Christ
  • 00:13:43.290 --> 00:13:48.260
  • Jesus.
  • 00:13:48.270 --> 00:13:51.160
  • So, the contrast is important, and the contrast is also
  • 00:13:51.170 --> 00:13:55.180
  • remarkable.
  • 00:13:55.190 --> 00:13:57.040
  • For example, in Adam, we find sin.
  • 00:13:57.050 --> 00:14:01.040
  • In Jesus, we find salvation.
  • 00:14:01.050 --> 00:14:04.110
  • In Adam, we find condemnation, guilt, and shame.
  • 00:14:04.120 --> 00:14:07.290
  • In Jesus, we find freedom from condemnation, guilt, and shame.
  • 00:14:08.000 --> 00:14:13.110
  • In Adam, we receive a sin nature.
  • 00:14:13.120 --> 00:14:15.210
  • In Jesus, we are set free from sin and we receive a brand-new
  • 00:14:15.220 --> 00:14:20.010
  • nature.
  • 00:14:20.020 --> 00:14:21.090
  • In Adam, we are cursed because cursed is everyone that sins,
  • 00:14:21.100 --> 00:14:25.190
  • and the curse of sin is death.
  • 00:14:25.200 --> 00:14:27.220
  • But in Jesus Christ, we are blessed because we've been set
  • 00:14:27.230 --> 00:14:31.230
  • free from sin, and we've been made holy and blameless before
  • 00:14:31.240 --> 00:14:35.150
  • him in love as we are now the righteousness of God in Christ.
  • 00:14:35.160 --> 00:14:40.020
  • In Adam, there is judgment and death, but in Jesus,
  • 00:14:40.030 --> 00:14:43.190
  • there is love and life.
  • 00:14:43.200 --> 00:14:45.200
  • Terry: What matters now is not what your lineage was, not
  • 00:14:46.230 --> 00:14:49.230
  • where you came from, not what bondages and iniquities have
  • 00:14:49.240 --> 00:14:53.250
  • been transferred from one generation to the next.
  • 00:14:53.260 --> 00:14:57.060
  • Because when you come to Jesus, all of that old bloodline is cut
  • 00:14:57.070 --> 00:15:00.240
  • off and now, in Christ Jesus, you are made a brand-new person.
  • 00:15:00.250 --> 00:15:06.140
  • 00:15:06.150 --> 00:15:08.210
  • You are either drawing nourishment from one, identity
  • 00:15:16.170 --> 00:15:20.100
  • from one, the example of behavior from one, or the other.
  • 00:15:20.110 --> 00:15:26.120
  • That's why those two words, "in Christ," are a game changer,
  • 00:15:26.130 --> 00:15:30.280
  • "in Adam" or "in Christ."
  • 00:15:30.290 --> 00:15:34.020
  • Those two simple words, "in Christ," or, "in Jesus,"
  • 00:15:34.030 --> 00:15:37.070
  • reveal the essence and the summary and the totality
  • 00:15:37.080 --> 00:15:40.180
  • of God's plan for humanity.
  • 00:15:40.190 --> 00:15:43.010
  • If you wanna know what God wants for your life, look at Jesus.
  • 00:15:43.020 --> 00:15:46.210
  • Because in Jesus are all of the riches of our salvation.
  • 00:15:46.220 --> 00:15:50.280
  • And as we live in him and move in him and have our being in
  • 00:15:50.290 --> 00:15:54.060
  • him, God looks at us in Jesus Christ
  • 00:15:54.070 --> 00:15:57.010
  • and he sees us holy and accepted and blameless in him.
  • 00:15:57.020 --> 00:16:02.220
  • Who you are in Christ matters far more than who you were
  • 00:16:02.230 --> 00:16:08.000
  • in Adam.
  • 00:16:08.010 --> 00:16:09.120
  • Who you are in Christ matters far more than who you were
  • 00:16:09.130 --> 00:16:12.290
  • in your family tree.
  • 00:16:13.000 --> 00:16:14.250
  • What matters now is not what your lineage was, not where you
  • 00:16:14.260 --> 00:16:18.170
  • came from, not what bondages and iniquities have been transferred
  • 00:16:18.180 --> 00:16:23.110
  • from one generation to the next.
  • 00:16:23.120 --> 00:16:25.050
  • Because when you come to Jesus, all of that old bloodline is cut
  • 00:16:25.060 --> 00:16:28.220
  • off and now, in Christ Jesus, you are made a brand-new person.
  • 00:16:28.230 --> 00:16:36.000
  • Can I get a big, "Amen," this morning?
  • 00:16:36.010 --> 00:16:39.150
  • So, Paul wants to tell us that as believers,
  • 00:16:39.160 --> 00:16:43.250
  • things have changed for us.
  • 00:16:43.260 --> 00:16:45.200
  • As believers, we are to no longer live as the Adam's
  • 00:16:45.210 --> 00:16:50.170
  • family lived.
  • 00:16:50.180 --> 00:16:52.220
  • The jokes don't get any better with the passing of a birthday.
  • 00:16:52.230 --> 00:16:58.200
  • I know you may feel as if that your family put the "funk"
  • 00:16:58.210 --> 00:17:01.100
  • in "dysfunctional," and you come from "The Addams Family,"
  • 00:17:01.110 --> 00:17:05.090
  • complete with Uncle Fester and the Thing, but I wanna tell ya,
  • 00:17:05.100 --> 00:17:07.280
  • that's all irrelevant because you have a brand-new identity
  • 00:17:07.290 --> 00:17:11.270
  • today, and Paul wants us to know that.
  • 00:17:11.280 --> 00:17:14.110
  • So, turn to Ephesians chapter 4 now, just a couple
  • 00:17:14.120 --> 00:17:17.280
  • of chapters over.
  • 00:17:17.290 --> 00:17:19.090
  • And I wanna encourage you to read the entire book, but he
  • 00:17:19.100 --> 00:17:21.080
  • picks on the theme again in Ephesians 4, in verse 17, and he
  • 00:17:21.090 --> 00:17:24.240
  • says this: "With the Lord's authority," this is Paul putting
  • 00:17:24.250 --> 00:17:30.160
  • his preacher voice on.
  • 00:17:30.170 --> 00:17:32.080
  • This is Paul saying, "I'm not just here sharin' some ideas
  • 00:17:32.090 --> 00:17:36.110
  • with you.
  • 00:17:36.120 --> 00:17:37.180
  • I'm not just here as an ordinary sojourner and fellow traveler
  • 00:17:37.190 --> 00:17:42.030
  • with you.
  • 00:17:42.040 --> 00:17:42.280
  • I'm one of you.
  • 00:17:42.290 --> 00:17:43.230
  • I struggle with what you struggle with.
  • 00:17:43.240 --> 00:17:45.150
  • I identify with what you go through, but in this moment, I
  • 00:17:45.160 --> 00:17:48.190
  • am here to tell you something that is objective.
  • 00:17:48.200 --> 00:17:51.250
  • I'm here to tell you something that is absolute, and so I wanna
  • 00:17:51.260 --> 00:17:54.240
  • load this by telling you that I'm gonna say this with
  • 00:17:54.250 --> 00:17:58.100
  • the Lord's authority."
  • 00:17:58.110 --> 00:17:59.280
  • "Live no longer as the Gentiles do," Adam and his family.
  • 00:17:59.290 --> 00:18:09.190
  • You don't have to live there.
  • 00:18:09.200 --> 00:18:10.280
  • You don't have to be bound there.
  • 00:18:10.290 --> 00:18:12.290
  • You don't have to be enslaved there.
  • 00:18:13.000 --> 00:18:14.210
  • You don't have to be defined there.
  • 00:18:14.220 --> 00:18:16.120
  • You don't have to be labeled there.
  • 00:18:16.130 --> 00:18:18.290
  • Don't live there any longer.
  • 00:18:19.000 --> 00:18:21.180
  • Now, maybe the team can put this up on the screen for those here
  • 00:18:21.190 --> 00:18:25.010
  • in the auditorium today, but I love the way Eugene Peterson
  • 00:18:25.020 --> 00:18:28.050
  • translates that word "Gentiles," because in his research
  • 00:18:28.060 --> 00:18:31.150
  • and in The Message, he says this right here.
  • 00:18:31.160 --> 00:18:34.190
  • He says, "Live no longer as the empty-headed mindless
  • 00:18:34.200 --> 00:18:39.040
  • crowd does."
  • 00:18:39.050 --> 00:18:41.250
  • Turn to your neighbor and say, "Your ignorance
  • 00:18:41.260 --> 00:18:44.020
  • has become a burden to me."
  • 00:18:44.030 --> 00:18:46.080
  • No, I'm kidding, I'm kidding, I'm kidding.
  • 00:18:46.090 --> 00:18:50.050
  • That sounds so insulting, sounds so condescending, but he's using
  • 00:18:50.060 --> 00:18:56.200
  • that statement to describe unbelievers.
  • 00:18:56.210 --> 00:18:59.140
  • And his intention is not to be disrespectful.
  • 00:18:59.150 --> 00:19:02.010
  • He's just trying to show us contrast again.
  • 00:19:02.020 --> 00:19:05.130
  • He's trying to show us how radical the change has been
  • 00:19:05.140 --> 00:19:08.260
  • since we've put our faith in Jesus.
  • 00:19:08.270 --> 00:19:12.120
  • Prior to knowing Jesus, we just didn't know what we didn't know.
  • 00:19:12.130 --> 00:19:18.070
  • Salvation is not only the transformation of the human
  • 00:19:18.080 --> 00:19:21.110
  • heart, salvation is the opening of the mind to discover
  • 00:19:21.120 --> 00:19:25.110
  • spiritual truths that we were once blinded to.
  • 00:19:25.120 --> 00:19:29.230
  • Paul's saying, "In Adam, you didn't know what
  • 00:19:29.240 --> 00:19:31.190
  • you didn't know."
  • 00:19:31.200 --> 00:19:33.150
  • Have you ever tried to share something spiritual and
  • 00:19:33.160 --> 00:19:37.000
  • meaningful with someone who wasn't a Christian, and you
  • 00:19:37.010 --> 00:19:40.000
  • could see you were making no progress whatsoever with them?
  • 00:19:40.010 --> 00:19:44.060
  • I mean, it was so meaningful to you, and you opened your heart
  • 00:19:44.070 --> 00:19:46.230
  • and you were just pouring out to them all that God was telling
  • 00:19:46.240 --> 00:19:50.040
  • you and doing in you, and they just looked at you glassy-eyed
  • 00:19:50.050 --> 00:19:54.180
  • and slack-jawed, and a little line of drool appears
  • 00:19:54.190 --> 00:19:57.200
  • on the side of their chin, and you realized,
  • 00:19:57.210 --> 00:20:00.040
  • "This isn't connecting here."
  • 00:20:00.050 --> 00:20:02.170
  • Now, sometimes when that happens, people jump to this
  • 00:20:02.180 --> 00:20:05.000
  • conclusion and we think, "Well, unbelievers just don't want
  • 00:20:05.010 --> 00:20:08.060
  • to know what we know."
  • 00:20:08.070 --> 00:20:11.070
  • And we form value judgments about them.
  • 00:20:11.080 --> 00:20:14.030
  • But Paul wants us to know it isn't that they don't want to
  • 00:20:14.040 --> 00:20:16.200
  • know what we know.
  • 00:20:16.210 --> 00:20:18.020
  • It is simply that they don't know what we know.
  • 00:20:18.030 --> 00:20:21.140
  • And the reason they don't know it is because in Adam, they are
  • 00:20:21.150 --> 00:20:24.240
  • not spiritually dead, but they are spiritually blinded.
  • 00:20:24.250 --> 00:20:29.140
  • The god of this world has blinded the minds of all who
  • 00:20:29.150 --> 00:20:33.160
  • fall into this category and the mind is incapable of
  • 00:20:33.170 --> 00:20:38.020
  • understanding spiritual truths.
  • 00:20:38.030 --> 00:20:42.210
  • Now, this idea of what Paul calls, "Ignorance," doesn't mean
  • 00:20:42.220 --> 00:20:47.090
  • that they're unable to comprehend logic and ration.
  • 00:20:47.100 --> 00:20:51.120
  • We know better than that.
  • 00:20:51.130 --> 00:20:52.190
  • Just look at the world around us and you'll see the progress of
  • 00:20:52.200 --> 00:20:57.090
  • science and medicine and technology, and many of those
  • 00:20:57.100 --> 00:21:00.200
  • things were birthed by Christians, but many of those
  • 00:21:00.210 --> 00:21:03.140
  • other ideas were birthed by unbelievers.
  • 00:21:03.150 --> 00:21:07.050
  • Paul isn't saying the unbeliever lacks the ability to think
  • 00:21:07.060 --> 00:21:10.090
  • rationally, he's empty-headed in that way.
  • 00:21:10.100 --> 00:21:13.000
  • He's simply saying, "When it comes to the matter of purpose,
  • 00:21:13.010 --> 00:21:19.130
  • when it comes to the matter of eternity, when it comes to
  • 00:21:19.140 --> 00:21:23.040
  • transcendent issues, when it comes to the things of God, the
  • 00:21:23.050 --> 00:21:26.270
  • unbeliever doesn't have inherent within them the insight and
  • 00:21:26.280 --> 00:21:31.130
  • the eyesight, spiritually, to be able to comprehend that."
  • 00:21:31.140 --> 00:21:35.000
  • That's why we have to be even drawn to Jesus,
  • 00:21:35.010 --> 00:21:38.120
  • drawn by the Spirit to salvation, because we can't get
  • 00:21:38.130 --> 00:21:42.020
  • there on our own because we don't have the ability to get
  • 00:21:42.030 --> 00:21:44.240
  • there on our own.
  • 00:21:44.250 --> 00:21:47.100
  • Contrast, this is who you once were.
  • 00:21:47.110 --> 00:21:51.290
  • This is how you once behaved.
  • 00:21:52.000 --> 00:21:53.290
  • Because the outflow of being spiritually blind is to end up
  • 00:21:54.000 --> 00:21:59.200
  • groping your way through life, not living with the sense of
  • 00:21:59.210 --> 00:22:03.000
  • meaningful purpose beyond the moment, not living with
  • 00:22:03.010 --> 00:22:06.100
  • the sense of transcendent awareness related to eternity.
  • 00:22:06.110 --> 00:22:12.140
  • In fact, in the case of some lives that have been entrenched
  • 00:22:12.150 --> 00:22:16.180
  • in darkness for so long, some people even begin to deny
  • 00:22:16.190 --> 00:22:19.170
  • the reality of those things.
  • 00:22:19.180 --> 00:22:22.250
  • Because they can't see them, they say,
  • 00:22:22.260 --> 00:22:25.040
  • "Eternity doesn't exist.
  • 00:22:25.050 --> 00:22:26.150
  • God doesn't exist.
  • 00:22:26.160 --> 00:22:28.020
  • Life beyond the grave doesn't exist."
  • 00:22:28.030 --> 00:22:30.230
  • And in their blindness, their behavior is shaped and formed.
  • 00:22:30.240 --> 00:22:38.030
  • But again, contrast.
  • 00:22:38.040 --> 00:22:39.140
  • And let me just stop right there for a moment and say that's why
  • 00:22:39.150 --> 00:22:41.280
  • we need to use kindness and patience and gentleness when
  • 00:22:41.290 --> 00:22:46.020
  • we are sharing our faith with people who don't know God.
  • 00:22:46.030 --> 00:22:51.140
  • Because maybe their resistance to you is not willful
  • 00:22:51.150 --> 00:22:54.190
  • and intentional.
  • 00:22:54.200 --> 00:22:55.200
  • Maybe it's simply honest and blind.
  • 00:22:55.210 --> 00:22:58.290
  • We need to bathe our evangelism in prayer.
  • 00:22:59.000 --> 00:23:02.290
  • We need to pray and invite, pray and engage.
  • 00:23:03.000 --> 00:23:07.270
  • Prayer needs to be an indispensable part
  • 00:23:07.280 --> 00:23:10.070
  • of evangelism.
  • 00:23:10.080 --> 00:23:11.050
  • Don't just tell your children about God.
  • 00:23:11.060 --> 00:23:13.220
  • Pray for your children and bathe your conversation in prayer.
  • 00:23:13.230 --> 00:23:18.100
  • Because ultimately, you can form the most convincing argument
  • 00:23:18.110 --> 00:23:22.070
  • about God and his plan for humanity on the face of the
  • 00:23:22.080 --> 00:23:25.080
  • earth, but if somebody cannot see it, they just can't see it.
  • 00:23:25.090 --> 00:23:29.080
  • So our prayer has to be, "God, open their eyes so that my words
  • 00:23:29.090 --> 00:23:37.180
  • have a place of connection.
  • 00:23:37.190 --> 00:23:40.050
  • God, open their eyes so they can even see what I want to tell
  • 00:23:40.060 --> 00:23:44.060
  • you," contrast.
  • 00:23:44.070 --> 00:23:45.200
  • Paul then summarizes the life of the unbeliever in verses 18 and
  • 00:23:45.210 --> 00:23:49.260
  • 19, and he says, "This is what you're free from.
  • 00:23:49.270 --> 00:23:55.120
  • This was what your journey was like, empty and void, ensnared
  • 00:23:55.130 --> 00:23:58.290
  • in pursuits and dead ends, absent of substantial purpose.
  • 00:23:59.000 --> 00:24:03.080
  • That is man in his lowest state, in his natural-born desire, but
  • 00:24:03.090 --> 00:24:08.030
  • you have been made different."
  • 00:24:08.040 --> 00:24:11.110
  • Terry: The truth is, you can't work your way out of this
  • 00:24:12.050 --> 00:24:14.110
  • category, but you can believe you way out of this category.
  • 00:24:14.120 --> 00:24:18.030
  • You can go from being in Adam to being in Jesus Christ through
  • 00:24:18.040 --> 00:24:22.090
  • something as simple as saying, "Lord, I believe you are the one
  • 00:24:22.100 --> 00:24:26.070
  • who takes away not only the sins of the world but
  • 00:24:26.080 --> 00:24:29.070
  • my personal sin.
  • 00:24:29.080 --> 00:24:30.140
  • You are my salvation, and in you, I become brand-new."
  • 00:24:30.150 --> 00:24:35.060
  • 00:24:35.070 --> 00:24:38.050
  • You're different now.
  • 00:24:44.010 --> 00:24:45.070
  • And then Paul kinda summarizes it this way and he says, "Okay,
  • 00:24:45.080 --> 00:24:47.290
  • three things: In your family tree apart from Christ, most
  • 00:24:48.000 --> 00:24:51.200
  • people are hardened in their ways and not sensitive
  • 00:24:51.210 --> 00:24:54.160
  • to their sin.
  • 00:24:54.170 --> 00:24:56.230
  • Most people are dominated by their sin and they've lost
  • 00:24:56.240 --> 00:25:00.030
  • their sense of shame.
  • 00:25:00.040 --> 00:25:01.100
  • And in Adam, in this category, many people are held captive by
  • 00:25:01.110 --> 00:25:04.260
  • their desires and they don't even realize who they're
  • 00:25:04.270 --> 00:25:08.060
  • hurting."
  • 00:25:08.070 --> 00:25:09.160
  • But that's not you.
  • 00:25:09.170 --> 00:25:11.230
  • As a born-again believer, your life is to be lived in contrast.
  • 00:25:11.240 --> 00:25:16.050
  • You are not to harden your heart and reject God's truth.
  • 00:25:16.060 --> 00:25:20.020
  • You are to not darken your understanding but keep your life
  • 00:25:20.030 --> 00:25:23.280
  • open before God.
  • 00:25:23.290 --> 00:25:25.050
  • You are to not be insensitive to what matters most in life.
  • 00:25:25.060 --> 00:25:29.220
  • As Christ followers, we are called to live lives
  • 00:25:29.230 --> 00:25:33.030
  • differently, but how?
  • 00:25:33.040 --> 00:25:37.010
  • How do we get there?
  • 00:25:37.020 --> 00:25:38.220
  • How do you get out of this category over into this
  • 00:25:38.230 --> 00:25:43.040
  • category?
  • 00:25:43.050 --> 00:25:44.270
  • Well, if you read the Bible, Paul goes on to say this in
  • 00:25:44.280 --> 00:25:47.050
  • verse 22, he says: "Throw off your sinful nature and your
  • 00:25:47.060 --> 00:25:50.120
  • former way of life."
  • 00:25:50.130 --> 00:25:53.050
  • Can I be honest?
  • 00:25:53.060 --> 00:25:55.010
  • That really isn't any clearer to me.
  • 00:25:55.020 --> 00:25:58.290
  • "Throw it off."
  • 00:25:59.000 --> 00:26:01.020
  • What in the world does it mean to throw off
  • 00:26:01.030 --> 00:26:02.280
  • the old nature, the old self, the old man?
  • 00:26:02.290 --> 00:26:05.280
  • And by the way, when I talk about throwing off the old man,
  • 00:26:05.290 --> 00:26:08.140
  • I'm not speaking about your marriage.
  • 00:26:08.150 --> 00:26:10.000
  • I'm talking about who you once were in Adam.
  • 00:26:10.010 --> 00:26:14.000
  • Whew, almost got in trouble there.
  • 00:26:14.010 --> 00:26:19.000
  • It's called "pastoral evasive maneuvering."
  • 00:26:19.010 --> 00:26:22.020
  • How do you get out of that?
  • 00:26:22.030 --> 00:26:24.140
  • Well, he tells us in verse 24, throw it off, and then: "Put on
  • 00:26:24.150 --> 00:26:29.020
  • your nature created to be like God, truly righteous and holy."
  • 00:26:29.030 --> 00:26:32.290
  • Throw off the old.
  • 00:26:33.000 --> 00:26:34.070
  • Put on the new.
  • 00:26:34.080 --> 00:26:36.120
  • "Wax on, wax off."
  • 00:26:36.130 --> 00:26:42.130
  • Spiritual lessons from "The Karate Kid" in
  • 00:26:42.140 --> 00:26:44.160
  • the 1980s as expressed through the teachings of Paul the
  • 00:26:44.170 --> 00:26:48.210
  • Apostle, "Wax on, and wax off."
  • 00:26:48.220 --> 00:26:53.270
  • He's telling us about this corresponding behavior.
  • 00:26:53.280 --> 00:26:57.030
  • And how you interpret that one little phrase determines how you
  • 00:26:57.040 --> 00:27:02.060
  • go about trying to accomplish this.
  • 00:27:02.070 --> 00:27:05.150
  • Here's what I really wanna get to.
  • 00:27:05.160 --> 00:27:07.120
  • How you step out of this category into this category
  • 00:27:07.130 --> 00:27:10.180
  • makes all the difference in the world.
  • 00:27:10.190 --> 00:27:14.110
  • I know a lot of people who feel that getting out of this
  • 00:27:14.120 --> 00:27:17.070
  • category into this category means that they have to work
  • 00:27:17.080 --> 00:27:21.010
  • hard and harder to please God.
  • 00:27:21.020 --> 00:27:24.040
  • They have to earn the right to be accepted by God.
  • 00:27:24.050 --> 00:27:27.210
  • They have to live a life of piety and discipline to measure
  • 00:27:27.220 --> 00:27:31.120
  • up to God's expectation.
  • 00:27:31.130 --> 00:27:33.050
  • I know a lot of people that are working harder and harder and
  • 00:27:33.060 --> 00:27:36.250
  • harder, and all that does is keep them in this category.
  • 00:27:36.260 --> 00:27:40.100
  • But instead of serving their appetites,
  • 00:27:40.110 --> 00:27:42.140
  • they're now serving legalism.
  • 00:27:42.150 --> 00:27:44.070
  • They're now serving religion. They're now serving moralism.
  • 00:27:44.080 --> 00:27:47.120
  • They're now serving man's way of gaining God's approval.
  • 00:27:47.130 --> 00:27:50.170
  • The truth is, you can't work your way out of this category,
  • 00:27:50.180 --> 00:27:53.210
  • but you can believe your way out of this category.
  • 00:27:53.220 --> 00:27:57.040
  • You can go from being in Adam to being in Jesus Christ through
  • 00:27:57.050 --> 00:28:01.020
  • something as simple as saying, "Lord, I believe you are the one
  • 00:28:01.030 --> 00:28:05.040
  • who takes away not only the sins of the world
  • 00:28:05.050 --> 00:28:07.230
  • but my personal sin.
  • 00:28:07.240 --> 00:28:09.130
  • You are my salvation, and in you, I become brand-new."
  • 00:28:09.140 --> 00:28:13.150
  • That's the heart of the gospel.
  • 00:28:13.160 --> 00:28:21.230
  • How do you take off the old and how do you put on the new?
  • 00:28:21.240 --> 00:28:24.210
  • Your conclusion about that will either lead to duty
  • 00:28:24.220 --> 00:28:28.110
  • or to relationship.
  • 00:28:28.120 --> 00:28:29.160
  • It'll either lead to a life of striving or to a life of
  • 00:28:29.170 --> 00:28:30.210
  • righteousness, peace, and joy.
  • 00:28:30.220 --> 00:28:38.120
  • And the reason I know that is because I interpreted this
  • 00:28:38.130 --> 00:28:42.050
  • phrase one way for the first 28 years of my life.
  • 00:28:42.060 --> 00:28:46.050
  • Many of you know my story.
  • 00:28:46.060 --> 00:28:47.110
  • I was raised in a pastor's home with good Godly parents who
  • 00:28:47.120 --> 00:28:51.010
  • loved me but a very flawed religious system, a system that
  • 00:28:51.020 --> 00:28:55.040
  • was based upon performance, based upon behavior
  • 00:28:55.050 --> 00:28:58.190
  • modification, based upon earning God's love and favor and
  • 00:28:58.200 --> 00:29:03.080
  • kindness.
  • 00:29:03.090 --> 00:29:04.210
  • And so, we felt like it was our duty to clean ourselves up and
  • 00:29:04.220 --> 00:29:08.130
  • to do what was right, and then we hoped that God
  • 00:29:08.140 --> 00:29:11.080
  • would accept us.
  • 00:29:11.090 --> 00:29:12.160
  • And then, when God did accept us and we "got saved," as we called
  • 00:29:12.170 --> 00:29:16.010
  • it, then if we sinned, we felt as if we were unsaved.
  • 00:29:16.020 --> 00:29:20.290
  • And so we would come back and get saved again.
  • 00:29:21.000 --> 00:29:23.110
  • How many of you grew up in a church where you got saved every
  • 00:29:23.120 --> 00:29:26.130
  • single weekend 'cause you weren't sure if it kept from the
  • 00:29:26.140 --> 00:29:30.110
  • previous weekend?
  • 00:29:30.120 --> 00:29:34.270
  • I got saved hundreds of times as a teenager.
  • 00:29:34.280 --> 00:29:38.070
  • I probably needed it, but that isn't theologically correct.
  • 00:29:38.080 --> 00:29:40.280
  • I'd come to the altar, I'd repent, I'd accept Jesus Christ
  • 00:29:40.290 --> 00:29:44.260
  • and then I would go out and I would sin.
  • 00:29:44.270 --> 00:29:47.250
  • And because my religious education told me that sins
  • 00:29:47.260 --> 00:29:52.020
  • separated me not only from fellowship with God but
  • 00:29:52.030 --> 00:29:55.070
  • relationship with God, then I felt as if God had
  • 00:29:55.080 --> 00:29:58.150
  • thrown me back.
  • 00:29:58.160 --> 00:29:59.230
  • And so I would work my way back to a place of repentance again.
  • 00:29:59.240 --> 00:30:04.080
  • Hundreds of times I came to the alter in my teenage years or
  • 00:30:04.090 --> 00:30:09.120
  • stood in a congregation and prayed a prayer, and just didn't
  • 00:30:09.130 --> 00:30:12.100
  • pray it in order to pray it along with others, but I was
  • 00:30:12.110 --> 00:30:14.260
  • really praying it again for myself.
  • 00:30:14.270 --> 00:30:16.130
  • And my desperate desire was, "God, can I do better?
  • 00:30:16.140 --> 00:30:19.070
  • Can I do better?
  • 00:30:19.080 --> 00:30:20.090
  • I wanna please you.
  • 00:30:20.100 --> 00:30:21.090
  • I wanna be holy.
  • 00:30:21.100 --> 00:30:22.100
  • I wanna be righteous."
  • 00:30:22.110 --> 00:30:23.120
  • And yet, I felt it was my responsibility
  • 00:30:23.130 --> 00:30:26.040
  • to earn my salvation, even after it had been freely given to me.
  • 00:30:26.050 --> 00:30:32.110
  • Can I tell you somethin' else?
  • 00:30:32.120 --> 00:30:34.020
  • I also felt subconsciously that I was responsible for making
  • 00:30:34.030 --> 00:30:38.140
  • Jesus happy for giving me my salvation.
  • 00:30:38.150 --> 00:30:42.210
  • Have you ever met anybody like that?
  • 00:30:42.220 --> 00:30:46.240
  • I felt that I had to make Jesus happy.
  • 00:30:46.250 --> 00:30:49.220
  • Do you know what kind of a burden that is to put on a
  • 00:30:49.230 --> 00:30:51.090
  • 16-year-old?
  • 00:30:51.100 --> 00:30:53.190
  • You know what kind of a weight that is to put on a 60-year-old?
  • 00:30:53.200 --> 00:30:57.200
  • It's hard enough for me to keep myself happy, let alone to feel
  • 00:30:57.210 --> 00:31:02.000
  • the responsibility of doing right so that I can make God
  • 00:31:02.010 --> 00:31:06.100
  • happy with my behavior.
  • 00:31:06.110 --> 00:31:08.100
  • And then one day I realized that instead of finding freedom, I
  • 00:31:08.110 --> 00:31:12.070
  • was finding more and more guilt and I was dying of hardening of
  • 00:31:12.080 --> 00:31:16.100
  • the ought-eries.
  • 00:31:16.110 --> 00:31:17.170
  • "I oughtta be doing more and more and more," and
  • 00:31:17.180 --> 00:31:20.050
  • it was never changing for me.
  • 00:31:20.060 --> 00:31:21.190
  • And one day, sitting down, reading the Bible, I discovered
  • 00:31:21.200 --> 00:31:25.040
  • that following Jesus was about grace.
  • 00:31:25.050 --> 00:31:31.140
  • It was about being made good, not simply doing good.
  • 00:31:31.150 --> 00:31:39.140
  • I know some people look at Christianity like karma.
  • 00:31:39.150 --> 00:31:42.160
  • It's about being good and do good so you can get good, but
  • 00:31:42.170 --> 00:31:48.020
  • that isn't the gospel.
  • 00:31:48.030 --> 00:31:49.270
  • The gospel isn't about being good and doing good so you can
  • 00:31:49.280 --> 00:31:52.160
  • get good.
  • 00:31:52.170 --> 00:31:53.230
  • The gospel is this: You were not good and could not become good
  • 00:31:53.240 --> 00:31:58.160
  • because none of humanity is good.
  • 00:31:58.170 --> 00:32:01.060
  • But then came Jesus, who is good.
  • 00:32:01.070 --> 00:32:03.000
  • He laid down his life for you and shed his blood for you so
  • 00:32:03.010 --> 00:32:05.240
  • that by faith, believing you could be brought into Christ,
  • 00:32:05.250 --> 00:32:08.240
  • and in Christ, you could be holy.
  • 00:32:08.250 --> 00:32:10.290
  • In Christ, you could be blameless.
  • 00:32:11.000 --> 00:32:13.020
  • In Christ, you could be accepted.
  • 00:32:13.030 --> 00:32:14.270
  • In Christ, God would be satisfied with you.
  • 00:32:14.280 --> 00:32:17.020
  • And in Christ, you would have all of the riches of his grace.
  • 00:32:17.030 --> 00:32:23.220
  • Christianity is not about karma.
  • 00:32:23.230 --> 00:32:25.130
  • It's about grace.
  • 00:32:25.140 --> 00:32:27.040
  • It's not about behavior modification.
  • 00:32:27.050 --> 00:32:29.160
  • It is about the revelation of a new personhood that is freely
  • 00:32:29.170 --> 00:32:33.180
  • given to all who trust in Jesus.
  • 00:32:33.190 --> 00:32:37.140
  • You say, "Wait a minute, Terry, I thought Christians
  • 00:32:37.150 --> 00:32:39.000
  • did good things."
  • 00:32:39.010 --> 00:32:39.290
  • They do, but not to gain God's approval.
  • 00:32:40.000 --> 00:32:45.120
  • They do because we have God's approval.
  • 00:32:45.130 --> 00:32:48.240
  • And now, seated with Christ in heavenly places, sealed with
  • 00:32:48.250 --> 00:32:52.280
  • God's approval, we can roll up our shirtsleeves and put our
  • 00:32:52.290 --> 00:32:56.200
  • hands in the dirt and go about the business of building a
  • 00:32:56.210 --> 00:32:59.210
  • better world around us because we are doing it from a place of
  • 00:32:59.220 --> 00:33:03.090
  • seated authority, seated favor, seated blessing and grace,
  • 00:33:03.100 --> 00:33:08.010
  • not striving to become that.
  • 00:33:08.020 --> 00:33:10.180
  • Terry: So, she took my credit card, looked at it, and said,
  • 00:33:11.010 --> 00:33:12.260
  • "Okay, you can slide it through the machine."
  • 00:33:12.270 --> 00:33:15.120
  • And then she held onto my driver's license.
  • 00:33:15.130 --> 00:33:17.200
  • And then she looked at me really judgy.
  • 00:33:17.210 --> 00:33:22.030
  • And I'm thinkin', "Young lady, you were 3 years old
  • 00:33:22.040 --> 00:33:26.280
  • when I had my picture taken.
  • 00:33:26.290 --> 00:33:28.130
  • You're not old enough to judge me."
  • 00:33:28.140 --> 00:33:31.040
  • 00:33:31.050 --> 00:33:33.050
  • It's not moralism.
  • 00:33:39.240 --> 00:33:41.180
  • Some people have reduced the greatest story of
  • 00:33:41.190 --> 00:33:43.090
  • the universe down to moralism.
  • 00:33:43.100 --> 00:33:46.190
  • It's a story about us not being good enough to measure up and
  • 00:33:46.200 --> 00:33:53.110
  • God saying, "It's okay.
  • 00:33:53.120 --> 00:33:56.090
  • I'm not gonna lower my standard, because to lower my standard is
  • 00:33:56.100 --> 00:34:00.220
  • to give birth to a greater evil.
  • 00:34:00.230 --> 00:34:02.260
  • So I'm gonna send a standard bearer and that standard bearer
  • 00:34:02.270 --> 00:34:06.190
  • is going to fully live out a life of obedience
  • 00:34:06.200 --> 00:34:10.260
  • on your behalf."
  • 00:34:10.270 --> 00:34:12.130
  • And that doesn't mean you don't live in obedience to
  • 00:34:12.140 --> 00:34:14.060
  • God, but again, you're not obeying to be saved.
  • 00:34:14.070 --> 00:34:17.180
  • You have now been saved, and who wouldn't want to obey and please
  • 00:34:17.190 --> 00:34:22.050
  • the one who has saved them from death, judgment, hell, and the
  • 00:34:22.060 --> 00:34:26.110
  • wrath of God which is to come?
  • 00:34:26.120 --> 00:34:28.100
  • I know it's old school, but the gospel is true in its basic
  • 00:34:28.110 --> 00:34:33.090
  • reality, and that is the gospel.
  • 00:34:33.100 --> 00:34:36.060
  • 2 Corinthians 5, verse 17 says: "What this means is that those
  • 00:34:36.070 --> 00:34:42.060
  • who have become Christians have become new persons.
  • 00:34:42.070 --> 00:34:46.230
  • They are not the same anymore.
  • 00:34:46.240 --> 00:34:47.250
  • The old life is gone; a new life is become!"
  • 00:34:47.260 --> 00:34:51.130
  • "A new life is become!"
  • 00:34:51.140 --> 00:34:52.260
  • I love what Romans chapter 5 says, and I'll close with this,
  • 00:34:52.270 --> 00:34:55.210
  • verse 12: "When Adam sinned, sin entered the world.
  • 00:34:55.220 --> 00:34:58.200
  • Adam's sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for
  • 00:34:58.210 --> 00:35:01.150
  • everyone sinned.
  • 00:35:01.160 --> 00:35:02.240
  • Yes, people sinned even before the law was given.
  • 00:35:02.250 --> 00:35:06.120
  • But it was not counted as sin because there was not yet any
  • 00:35:06.130 --> 00:35:09.060
  • law to break.
  • 00:35:09.070 --> 00:35:10.160
  • Still, everyone died--from the time of Adam to the time of
  • 00:35:10.170 --> 00:35:13.140
  • Moses--even those who did not disobey an explicit commandment
  • 00:35:13.150 --> 00:35:17.110
  • of God, as Adam did.
  • 00:35:17.120 --> 00:35:19.000
  • Now Adam is a symbol, a representation of Christ, who
  • 00:35:19.010 --> 00:35:22.160
  • was yet to come.
  • 00:35:22.170 --> 00:35:24.000
  • But there is a great difference between Adam's sin and God's
  • 00:35:24.010 --> 00:35:26.160
  • gracious gift.
  • 00:35:26.170 --> 00:35:27.220
  • For the sin of this one man, Adam, brought death to many.
  • 00:35:27.230 --> 00:35:30.080
  • But even greater," even greater, even greater, "is God's
  • 00:35:30.090 --> 00:35:35.030
  • wonderful grace and his gift of forgiveness to many through this
  • 00:35:35.040 --> 00:35:38.160
  • other man, Jesus Christ.
  • 00:35:38.170 --> 00:35:40.210
  • And the result of God's gracious gift is very different from the
  • 00:35:40.220 --> 00:35:43.270
  • result of that one man's sin.
  • 00:35:43.280 --> 00:35:45.140
  • For Adam's sin led to condemnation, but God's free
  • 00:35:45.150 --> 00:35:48.100
  • gift leads to our being made right with God, even though we
  • 00:35:48.110 --> 00:35:51.120
  • are guilty of many sins.
  • 00:35:51.130 --> 00:35:52.280
  • For the sin of this one man, Adam, caused death
  • 00:35:52.290 --> 00:35:55.090
  • to rule over many.
  • 00:35:55.100 --> 00:35:56.190
  • But even greater is God's wonderful grace and his gift of
  • 00:35:56.200 --> 00:36:00.090
  • righteousness, for all who receive it will live in triumph
  • 00:36:00.100 --> 00:36:03.290
  • over sin and death through this one man, Jesus Christ.
  • 00:36:04.000 --> 00:36:07.050
  • Yes, Adam's one sin brings condemnation for everyone,
  • 00:36:07.060 --> 00:36:10.260
  • but Christ's one act of righteousness brings a right
  • 00:36:10.270 --> 00:36:14.010
  • relationship with God and a new life for everyone."
  • 00:36:14.020 --> 00:36:19.020
  • Which category are you in?
  • 00:36:26.040 --> 00:36:28.090
  • Are you in Adam?
  • 00:36:28.100 --> 00:36:30.020
  • Are you in Christ?
  • 00:36:30.030 --> 00:36:31.010
  • Let me ask you this.
  • 00:36:31.020 --> 00:36:32.010
  • How do you see yourself? How do you see yourself?
  • 00:36:32.020 --> 00:36:35.100
  • 'Cause I know some people who are in Christ, but they still
  • 00:36:35.110 --> 00:36:38.090
  • see them self as bein in Adam.
  • 00:36:38.100 --> 00:36:42.210
  • Therefore, they keep feeding that reality into their spirit.
  • 00:36:42.220 --> 00:36:47.230
  • They keep feeding that perception into their mind,
  • 00:36:47.240 --> 00:36:50.260
  • and then they wonder why they're struggling with some of
  • 00:36:50.270 --> 00:36:52.260
  • the things that they know they have the power to overcome.
  • 00:36:52.270 --> 00:36:55.080
  • It's because that what they're eating, what they're feeding,
  • 00:36:55.090 --> 00:36:57.280
  • what they're perceiving is defining how they live.
  • 00:36:57.290 --> 00:37:02.170
  • Not only who are you, but how do you see yourself?
  • 00:37:02.180 --> 00:37:05.220
  • How do you see yourself?
  • 00:37:05.230 --> 00:37:06.280
  • You know, in closing, I love many things about Arizona, but I
  • 00:37:06.290 --> 00:37:12.000
  • have a love-hate relationship with our driver's license
  • 00:37:12.010 --> 00:37:14.270
  • system.
  • 00:37:14.280 --> 00:37:16.230
  • On one hand, I wanna say I love the fact that you can get your
  • 00:37:16.240 --> 00:37:19.120
  • driver's license and you have it for 25 years.
  • 00:37:19.130 --> 00:37:22.080
  • How awesome is that, church?
  • 00:37:22.090 --> 00:37:23.280
  • Twenty-five years, you don't have to go back and wait
  • 00:37:23.290 --> 00:37:25.220
  • seventeen hours in line just to get up and take that test again.
  • 00:37:25.230 --> 00:37:30.030
  • Twenty-five years, it's amazing.
  • 00:37:30.040 --> 00:37:31.280
  • What I don't like about it is that you're stuck with that
  • 00:37:31.290 --> 00:37:34.240
  • picture until you do something about it.
  • 00:37:34.250 --> 00:37:36.290
  • And I can't tell ya how many times in my life I've gone up
  • 00:37:37.000 --> 00:37:41.150
  • and handed that license to someone, only to have them look
  • 00:37:41.160 --> 00:37:44.130
  • at me as if I'm passing off a fake ID on them.
  • 00:37:44.140 --> 00:37:48.170
  • Happened again recently.
  • 00:37:48.180 --> 00:37:49.240
  • Went into a store, handed the clerk my credit card and she
  • 00:37:49.250 --> 00:37:53.280
  • asked for my driver's license.
  • 00:37:53.290 --> 00:37:55.070
  • She said, "Could I see your ID, sir?"
  • 00:37:55.080 --> 00:37:56.280
  • She was young.
  • 00:37:56.290 --> 00:37:57.270
  • I gave her my credit card and then my ID.
  • 00:37:57.280 --> 00:38:00.190
  • And so she took my credit card, looked at it, and said, "Okay,
  • 00:38:00.200 --> 00:38:03.040
  • you can slide it through the machine."
  • 00:38:03.050 --> 00:38:05.050
  • And then she held onto my driver's license.
  • 00:38:05.060 --> 00:38:07.250
  • And then she looked at me really judgy.
  • 00:38:07.260 --> 00:38:13.280
  • And I'm thinkin', "Young lady, you were 3 years old when
  • 00:38:13.290 --> 00:38:17.000
  • I had my picture taken.
  • 00:38:17.010 --> 00:38:18.100
  • You're not old enough to judge me."
  • 00:38:18.110 --> 00:38:22.190
  • But I get where she's comin' from 'cause a lot has changed
  • 00:38:22.200 --> 00:38:25.140
  • since that picture in my life.
  • 00:38:25.150 --> 00:38:27.080
  • A lot has changed.
  • 00:38:27.090 --> 00:38:28.280
  • I've put on weight, and I've taken off weight, and I've put
  • 00:38:28.290 --> 00:38:31.240
  • on some more weight.
  • 00:38:31.250 --> 00:38:33.230
  • My hairstyle has changed five or six times since then.
  • 00:38:33.240 --> 00:38:37.090
  • My hair color has changed five or six times since then.
  • 00:38:37.100 --> 00:38:41.160
  • There's a lot about that picture that doesn't square with my
  • 00:38:41.170 --> 00:38:44.190
  • identity today.
  • 00:38:44.200 --> 00:38:45.290
  • And guess what?
  • 00:38:46.000 --> 00:38:47.200
  • That picture's not who I am.
  • 00:38:47.210 --> 00:38:50.050
  • That picture is who I was on that day, but who I am today is
  • 00:38:50.060 --> 00:38:54.010
  • very different than who I was on that day.
  • 00:38:54.020 --> 00:38:57.120
  • And the truth us, we all carry around images of ourselves on a
  • 00:38:57.130 --> 00:39:01.270
  • certain day, a day when you failed, a day when you sinned, a
  • 00:39:01.280 --> 00:39:07.030
  • day when you were rejected or forsaken or abandoned or
  • 00:39:07.040 --> 00:39:11.000
  • unwanted or unloved.
  • 00:39:11.010 --> 00:39:12.240
  • We all carry around a snapshot internally of who we
  • 00:39:12.250 --> 00:39:17.020
  • think we are.
  • 00:39:17.030 --> 00:39:18.080
  • What I'm here to tell you today is give up the snapshot and
  • 00:39:18.090 --> 00:39:21.200
  • receive God's defining word on your life and begin to renew
  • 00:39:21.210 --> 00:39:26.080
  • your mind to that so you can see yourself consistent with the way
  • 00:39:26.090 --> 00:39:29.290
  • God sees you, not with the way you see yourself.
  • 00:39:30.000 --> 00:39:35.170
  • Who are you then as a born-again Christian?
  • 00:39:35.180 --> 00:39:39.010
  • Here's who you are.
  • 00:39:39.020 --> 00:39:39.270
  • Just close your Bible and set it down.
  • 00:39:39.280 --> 00:39:42.110
  • In fact, why don't you just close your eyes for a moment?
  • 00:39:42.120 --> 00:39:45.000
  • Close your eyes.
  • 00:39:45.010 --> 00:39:45.280
  • Let me tell you who you are.
  • 00:39:45.290 --> 00:39:47.290
  • You are loved.
  • 00:39:48.000 --> 00:39:49.150
  • You are chosen.
  • 00:39:49.160 --> 00:39:52.200
  • You are accepted.
  • 00:39:52.210 --> 00:39:55.250
  • You are forgiven.
  • 00:39:55.260 --> 00:39:59.030
  • You are alive to God.
  • 00:39:59.040 --> 00:40:00.290
  • You are free from the law of sin and death.
  • 00:40:01.000 --> 00:40:03.240
  • You are free from condemnation.
  • 00:40:03.250 --> 00:40:05.260
  • You are without blame before him in love.
  • 00:40:05.270 --> 00:40:08.170
  • You are his workmanship, created for good works.
  • 00:40:08.180 --> 00:40:11.240
  • You are the righteousness of God in Christ.
  • 00:40:11.250 --> 00:40:14.190
  • You are an overcomer.
  • 00:40:14.200 --> 00:40:16.040
  • You are a conqueror.
  • 00:40:16.050 --> 00:40:17.090
  • You are victorious.
  • 00:40:17.100 --> 00:40:19.030
  • You are a joint heir with Christ.
  • 00:40:19.040 --> 00:40:21.150
  • You are an ambassador of reconciliation.
  • 00:40:21.160 --> 00:40:24.140
  • You are a chosen generation.
  • 00:40:24.150 --> 00:40:26.100
  • You are a royal priesthood.
  • 00:40:26.110 --> 00:40:28.020
  • You are a holy nation.
  • 00:40:28.030 --> 00:40:29.220
  • You are the light of the world.
  • 00:40:29.230 --> 00:40:31.170
  • You are a city set upon a hill that cannot be hidden.
  • 00:40:31.180 --> 00:40:34.260
  • You are redeemed from the curse of the law, the curse of sin and
  • 00:40:34.270 --> 00:40:38.070
  • poverty and death.
  • 00:40:38.080 --> 00:40:39.180
  • You are born again and you are born free.
  • 00:40:39.190 --> 00:40:42.100
  • That's who you are.
  • 00:40:42.110 --> 00:40:44.000
  • And it's who you are because it's who God says you are.
  • 00:40:44.010 --> 00:40:49.080
  • That's who you are.
  • 00:40:49.090 --> 00:40:55.020
  • Having then been translated out of the kingdom of darkness and
  • 00:40:55.030 --> 00:41:00.090
  • into the kingdom of his dear Son, my prayer is may we live to
  • 00:41:00.100 --> 00:41:06.080
  • our full stature, and may we gratefully enjoy all of the
  • 00:41:06.090 --> 00:41:10.250
  • benefits, and may we use our freedom to bring freedom to
  • 00:41:10.260 --> 00:41:14.250
  • others and not live as if we are someone other than
  • 00:41:14.260 --> 00:41:19.080
  • who God made us to be.
  • 00:41:19.090 --> 00:41:21.290
  • male: My favorite part about the sermon today, Pastor Terry
  • 00:41:23.150 --> 00:41:26.040
  • was really talkin' about the contrast between the old you in
  • 00:41:26.050 --> 00:41:28.280
  • Adam and then the new you in Christ and he really said a line
  • 00:41:28.290 --> 00:41:32.280
  • that--he said, "The old you doesn't define the you now."
  • 00:41:32.290 --> 00:41:35.250
  • And a lot of times, I know in my life, I've tried not to define
  • 00:41:35.260 --> 00:41:40.040
  • myself for what I was or what I used to do or anything like
  • 00:41:40.050 --> 00:41:44.050
  • that, and it's just constantly reminding myself that I am
  • 00:41:44.060 --> 00:41:46.290
  • in Christ now.
  • 00:41:47.000 --> 00:41:48.060
  • And that means that the old, it happened, it's there, but that
  • 00:41:48.070 --> 00:41:51.050
  • doesn't define me today.
  • 00:41:51.060 --> 00:41:53.010
  • female: It's important to share our faith in love and
  • 00:41:53.020 --> 00:41:55.240
  • kindness because it shows who God is, and I think some people
  • 00:41:55.250 --> 00:41:59.150
  • see him as being this mean God or judgmental God.
  • 00:41:59.160 --> 00:42:02.200
  • So if we show his characteristics, it shows, like,
  • 00:42:02.210 --> 00:42:05.170
  • what kind of God we actually have.
  • 00:42:05.180 --> 00:42:08.070
  • male: I'd probably say that grace makes, it's so important
  • 00:42:08.080 --> 00:42:11.000
  • to our Christian life because it is one thing that,
  • 00:42:11.010 --> 00:42:14.210
  • it's always a constant.
  • 00:42:14.220 --> 00:42:15.210
  • It will always be there.
  • 00:42:15.220 --> 00:42:16.270
  • It is what is built our faith on, Jesus' grace.
  • 00:42:16.280 --> 00:42:21.290
  • That's what we were saved by.
  • 00:42:22.000 --> 00:42:23.010
  • We were saved by grace through him.
  • 00:42:23.020 --> 00:42:25.080
  • male: I really loved the "Wax on, wax off," part that he did
  • 00:42:25.090 --> 00:42:27.130
  • in the movie 'cause it's from "The Karate Kid"
  • 00:42:27.140 --> 00:42:29.030
  • and it's a great movie.
  • 00:42:29.040 --> 00:42:30.110
  • But it reminds me that we always have to be working on our life.
  • 00:42:30.120 --> 00:42:33.000
  • It's, like, you can't ever stop.
  • 00:42:33.010 --> 00:42:34.120
  • You can't ever ignore it.
  • 00:42:34.130 --> 00:42:35.180
  • You've gotta wax off the old, and in turn, you've gotta
  • 00:42:35.190 --> 00:42:38.000
  • wax on the new.
  • 00:42:38.010 --> 00:42:39.000
  • It's not enough just to wax off the old
  • 00:42:39.010 --> 00:42:41.180
  • and just let it be nothing.
  • 00:42:41.190 --> 00:42:42.130
  • You have to put on Christ.
  • 00:42:42.140 --> 00:42:43.140
  • You have to step into Christ and your identity
  • 00:42:43.150 --> 00:42:45.230
  • that you have in him.
  • 00:42:45.240 --> 00:42:46.210
  • male: You just really give it to Jesus.
  • 00:42:46.220 --> 00:42:48.130
  • You all lay it down on him.
  • 00:42:48.140 --> 00:42:49.210
  • When you're being born again, you realize that your past is
  • 00:42:49.220 --> 00:42:52.240
  • totally gone, you know, because nothing carries over with you.
  • 00:42:52.250 --> 00:42:57.090
  • And you are new in Jesus. You're born again.
  • 00:42:57.100 --> 00:42:59.140
  • And so when you throw out the old, it is gone and you are now
  • 00:42:59.150 --> 00:43:03.180
  • born anew into his kingdom and new life with him.
  • 00:43:03.190 --> 00:43:06.250
  • male: There's nothing I can do, like, I can't mess up, but I
  • 00:43:06.260 --> 00:43:10.030
  • can't do more or do less to be in God's grace, but he gives me
  • 00:43:10.040 --> 00:43:14.050
  • that gift anyway.
  • 00:43:14.060 --> 00:43:15.130
  • Even though I think I might be messing up or something, like,
  • 00:43:15.140 --> 00:43:18.090
  • his grace covers it.
  • 00:43:18.100 --> 00:43:19.150
  • Or if I'm doing good, or like, his grace covers anything.
  • 00:43:19.160 --> 00:43:22.190
  • Like, it's just huge.
  • 00:43:22.200 --> 00:43:24.110
  • male: What makes grace so important in the Christian life
  • 00:43:24.120 --> 00:43:26.290
  • is understanding that we have a past.
  • 00:43:27.000 --> 00:43:29.110
  • We've done things that we've fallen short from what God's
  • 00:43:29.120 --> 00:43:31.270
  • perfect standard is.
  • 00:43:31.280 --> 00:43:33.020
  • But grace is actually what allows us to still have that
  • 00:43:33.030 --> 00:43:35.280
  • relationship with God.
  • 00:43:35.290 --> 00:43:37.040
  • It's what allows us to not live in what we were but actually
  • 00:43:37.050 --> 00:43:40.170
  • live in who we are now in Christ.
  • 00:43:40.180 --> 00:43:43.010
  • I really remember when I was a teenager kinda goin' into young
  • 00:43:43.020 --> 00:43:45.170
  • adulthood, feelin' really stuck in who I was and feelin' like I
  • 00:43:45.180 --> 00:43:48.280
  • couldn't move forward, and it was honestly this church that
  • 00:43:48.290 --> 00:43:51.100
  • kind of reaffirmed who I was in Christ, reaffirmed that the past
  • 00:43:51.110 --> 00:43:54.280
  • isn't what's going to define me today.
  • 00:43:54.290 --> 00:43:57.010
  • So instead of bein' locked into that image of who I was, I was
  • 00:43:57.020 --> 00:43:59.260
  • able to really see who Christ was, and that he wants the same
  • 00:43:59.270 --> 00:44:02.290
  • thing for me as well.
  • 00:44:03.000 --> 00:44:04.050
  • And it helped me kind of escape that image that
  • 00:44:04.060 --> 00:44:06.100
  • I held of myself for so long.
  • 00:44:06.110 --> 00:44:08.110
  • What can wash away my sin?
  • 00:44:08.220 --> 00:44:15.200
  • Nothing but the blood
  • 00:44:15.210 --> 00:44:18.030
  • of Jesus
  • 00:44:18.040 --> 00:44:22.070
  • What can make me
  • 00:44:22.080 --> 00:44:25.180
  • whole again?
  • 00:44:25.190 --> 00:44:28.270
  • Nothing but the blood
  • 00:44:28.280 --> 00:44:31.130
  • of Jesus
  • 00:44:31.140 --> 00:44:35.090
  • Reuben Morgan: You sing.
  • 00:44:35.100 --> 00:44:36.060
  • Nothing but the blood
  • 00:44:36.070 --> 00:44:38.030
  • of Jesus
  • 00:44:38.040 --> 00:44:43.280
  • on the Hillsong Channel, and I wanna ask you a question.
  • 00:44:48.120 --> 00:44:50.290
  • And the question is whether you have a personal relationship
  • 00:44:51.000 --> 00:44:54.030
  • with Jesus, whether you've ever made a conscious choice
  • 00:44:54.040 --> 00:44:56.250
  • to ask him into your life.
  • 00:44:56.260 --> 00:44:58.020
  • You see, the Bible says if you ask him into your life, he will
  • 00:44:58.030 --> 00:44:59.020
  • come in and he will live in you.
  • 00:44:59.030 --> 00:45:04.120
  • You can encounter God in a personal way.
  • 00:45:04.130 --> 00:45:07.110
  • To me, that doesn't necessarily mean that you see him
  • 00:45:07.120 --> 00:45:09.290
  • physically, but it does mean that something changes.
  • 00:45:10.000 --> 00:45:12.270
  • You know you invited the Lord Jesus Christ into your life and
  • 00:45:12.280 --> 00:45:16.250
  • he did become your Lord and Savior.
  • 00:45:16.260 --> 00:45:19.120
  • What a powerful chance that is.
  • 00:45:19.130 --> 00:45:21.240
  • So have you ever prayed that kind of prayer?
  • 00:45:21.250 --> 00:45:23.120
  • In just a moment, I'm gonna pray a prayer.
  • 00:45:23.130 --> 00:45:25.240
  • I'm gonna ask if you would join me and pray along.
  • 00:45:25.250 --> 00:45:28.070
  • We're gonna pray to Jesus.
  • 00:45:28.080 --> 00:45:29.140
  • And I'll believe today is your day where Jesus Christ comes
  • 00:45:29.150 --> 00:45:32.190
  • into your life.
  • 00:45:32.200 --> 00:45:35.240
  • Now, maybe at some point you prayed a prayer like that,
  • 00:45:35.250 --> 00:45:38.170
  • but somewhere along the way, you've lost your way.
  • 00:45:38.180 --> 00:45:42.200
  • He said, "I'll never leave you nor forsake you."
  • 00:45:42.210 --> 00:45:44.270
  • I don't for one moment think God unsaves people,
  • 00:45:44.280 --> 00:45:47.090
  • but we can be making choices that have us living
  • 00:45:47.100 --> 00:45:50.160
  • alienated or dislocated from the center of God's will.
  • 00:45:50.170 --> 00:45:53.140
  • So I can't think of a more perfect time to say, "I wanna
  • 00:45:53.150 --> 00:45:57.130
  • come back to that place of living out of my God encounter.
  • 00:45:57.140 --> 00:46:01.030
  • I wanna come back to that place of serving Jesus and making him
  • 00:46:01.040 --> 00:46:05.240
  • Lord of my life."
  • 00:46:05.250 --> 00:46:07.130
  • This can be your day, a brand-new day,
  • 00:46:07.140 --> 00:46:10.060
  • a brand-new chapter.
  • 00:46:10.070 --> 00:46:11.240
  • So if you're watching and you say, "Brian, please include me
  • 00:46:11.250 --> 00:46:15.000
  • in that prayer.
  • 00:46:15.010 --> 00:46:15.280
  • I need God.
  • 00:46:15.290 --> 00:46:16.230
  • I wanna know Jesus.
  • 00:46:16.240 --> 00:46:18.060
  • I wanna get my life right and come back to him."
  • 00:46:18.070 --> 00:46:21.050
  • If that's you, you pray this prayer right alongside me.
  • 00:46:21.060 --> 00:46:24.040
  • We'll pray to God, and I believe today Jesus will fill your heart
  • 00:46:24.050 --> 00:46:27.210
  • and fill your life.
  • 00:46:27.220 --> 00:46:29.110
  • Come on, let's pray: "Dear Jesus, thank you for all
  • 00:46:29.120 --> 00:46:34.010
  • that you are and you are to me.
  • 00:46:34.020 --> 00:46:36.270
  • I recognize my need of you.
  • 00:46:36.280 --> 00:46:39.060
  • I'm gonna invite you now to come into my life as my Lord and
  • 00:46:39.070 --> 00:46:42.260
  • Savior.
  • 00:46:42.270 --> 00:46:44.090
  • I thank you that you can change my life.
  • 00:46:44.100 --> 00:46:47.180
