  • 00:00:01.110 --> 00:00:02.200
  • and we're the pastors of Hillsong Church.
  • 00:00:02.210 --> 00:00:04.260
  • We actually planted our church over 33 years ago.
  • 00:00:04.270 --> 00:00:08.010
  • By God's grace, it's become a global church.
  • 00:00:08.020 --> 00:00:11.070
  • We want to thank you for watching the Hillsong Channel.
  • 00:00:11.080 --> 00:00:13.250
  • Today, we're exciting to bring you our program from
  • 00:00:13.260 --> 00:00:15.280
  • one of our many global locations.
  • 00:00:15.290 --> 00:00:18.290
  • Bobbie Houston: It is our desire that anyone who walks
  • 00:00:19.000 --> 00:00:20.240
  • into a Hillsong Church, whether in the far reaches of Cape Town,
  • 00:00:20.250 --> 00:00:24.060
  • South Africa, or off the busy streets of Manhattan,
  • 00:00:24.070 --> 00:00:27.070
  • or the cobblestone parts of Europe, or right here
  • 00:00:27.080 --> 00:00:29.160
  • in Sydney, Australia, that you would feel a sense
  • 00:00:29.170 --> 00:00:31.280
  • of welcome and belonging, that the powerful worship
  • 00:00:31.290 --> 00:00:34.240
  • and biblical teaching would meet you where you are at
  • 00:00:34.250 --> 00:00:38.080
  • and help you reach your full potential in Christ.
  • 00:00:38.090 --> 00:00:40.180
  • Thanks so much for watching.
  • 00:00:40.190 --> 00:00:42.110
  • Welcome home.
  • 00:00:42.120 --> 00:00:43.270
  • 00:00:44.000 --> 00:00:54.000
  • 00:00:54.050 --> 00:01:00.120
  • Terry Crist: Welcome to Hillsong Church Phoenix.
  • 00:01:00.200 --> 00:01:02.190
  • We meet all across the Phoenix valley from the beautiful
  • 00:01:02.200 --> 00:01:05.130
  • suburbs to the working class neighborhood right
  • 00:01:05.140 --> 00:01:08.090
  • to the downtown urban core.
  • 00:01:08.100 --> 00:01:11.180
  • We love this city from its rugged beauty,
  • 00:01:11.190 --> 00:01:14.190
  • to its youthful energy, to its multicultural diversity.
  • 00:01:14.200 --> 00:01:19.050
  • All of those things are a picture of what makes
  • 00:01:19.060 --> 00:01:21.090
  • this community so great.
  • 00:01:21.100 --> 00:01:23.200
  • But most of all, we love the people who live here and
  • 00:01:23.210 --> 00:01:26.180
  • our heart is to see their lives transformed with the love
  • 00:01:26.190 --> 00:01:30.050
  • and grace of Jesus.
  • 00:01:30.060 --> 00:01:33.160
  • I'm Terry Crist, the lead pastor of Hillsong Church Phoenix
  • 00:01:33.170 --> 00:01:36.150
  • along with my wife Judith.
  • 00:01:36.160 --> 00:01:38.120
  • I'm excited that you've taken time to join us right here on
  • 00:01:38.130 --> 00:01:41.120
  • the Hillsong Channel for one of our weekend worship services.
  • 00:01:41.130 --> 00:01:45.110
  • I'm excited about the message I'm bringing to you.
  • 00:01:45.120 --> 00:01:48.030
  • I really believe it has the potential to change your life.
  • 00:01:48.040 --> 00:01:51.190
  • Terry: Not only have I seen that in the Bible,
  • 00:01:52.200 --> 00:01:54.040
  • but I've seen that in my personal life.
  • 00:01:54.050 --> 00:01:56.170
  • Jesus is Savior. Jesus is healer.
  • 00:01:56.180 --> 00:01:59.180
  • Jesus is miracle worker. Jesus is leader.
  • 00:01:59.190 --> 00:02:01.140
  • He is Lord. He is teacher.
  • 00:02:01.150 --> 00:02:04.280
  • He is restorer. He is rebuilder.
  • 00:02:04.290 --> 00:02:07.160
  • He is the one who repairs what seems to be broken
  • 00:02:07.170 --> 00:02:12.160
  • and gone in your life.
  • 00:02:12.170 --> 00:02:14.270
  • Terry: Would you give a great, big welcome to everyone
  • 00:02:17.030 --> 00:02:18.160
  • joining us, one of our campuses and one of our venues
  • 00:02:18.170 --> 00:02:20.290
  • or watching on the Hillsong Channel?
  • 00:02:21.000 --> 00:02:24.080
  • Welcome to Phoenix.
  • 00:02:24.090 --> 00:02:28.090
  • So good to have you with us here today.
  • 00:02:28.100 --> 00:02:30.240
  • This morning we are going to begin a journey that is actually
  • 00:02:30.250 --> 00:02:33.060
  • going to take us through the 40-day period leading up
  • 00:02:33.070 --> 00:02:36.170
  • to Easter.
  • 00:02:36.180 --> 00:02:37.280
  • This period is known as Lent in the traditional church and it's
  • 00:02:37.290 --> 00:02:41.040
  • a time when Christians all over the world begin to reflect upon
  • 00:02:41.050 --> 00:02:45.110
  • the life of Jesus, especially as it relates to his suffering
  • 00:02:45.120 --> 00:02:49.180
  • and his sacrifice.
  • 00:02:49.190 --> 00:02:51.150
  • It's, for many people, a time of fasting, and prayer,
  • 00:02:51.160 --> 00:02:54.190
  • and repentance, but most importantly,
  • 00:02:54.200 --> 00:02:56.190
  • it is a time of drawing near to God.
  • 00:02:56.200 --> 00:02:59.210
  • For those who may not be familiar with the term Lent,
  • 00:02:59.220 --> 00:03:03.060
  • but you may be familiar with our celebration of Advent,
  • 00:03:03.070 --> 00:03:06.270
  • let me say that Lent is a lot like Advent.
  • 00:03:06.280 --> 00:03:10.180
  • It a time of great expectation, a time of great longing,
  • 00:03:10.190 --> 00:03:15.200
  • a time of leaning into God, and to his Word,
  • 00:03:15.210 --> 00:03:19.220
  • and to his presence.
  • 00:03:19.230 --> 00:03:21.100
  • Of course, Advent culminates with the birth of Jesus
  • 00:03:21.110 --> 00:03:25.010
  • whereas Lent culminates with Resurrection Sunday.
  • 00:03:25.020 --> 00:03:29.150
  • And for us as people of faith, for us as followers of Jesus,
  • 00:03:29.160 --> 00:03:33.270
  • the Resurrection of Jesus is the great event in history
  • 00:03:33.280 --> 00:03:38.180
  • that we have pinned all of our hopes upon.
  • 00:03:38.190 --> 00:03:41.240
  • In fact, Paul put it this way, he said,
  • 00:03:41.250 --> 00:03:43.240
  • "If the Resurrection is not true,
  • 00:03:43.250 --> 00:03:45.160
  • then you're believing is in vain."
  • 00:03:45.170 --> 00:03:48.160
  • But because that we know it is true,
  • 00:03:48.170 --> 00:03:50.280
  • we can believe with confidence knowing that the God who has
  • 00:03:50.290 --> 00:03:54.130
  • raised his Son from the dead is also at work in history,
  • 00:03:54.140 --> 00:03:57.230
  • he has at work in our story, he is at work in our community,
  • 00:03:57.240 --> 00:04:01.290
  • and ultimately just as he kept his Word in raising Jesus from
  • 00:04:02.000 --> 00:04:05.200
  • the dead, he will bring his promises to pass in our lives.
  • 00:04:05.210 --> 00:04:11.000
  • And so, as we begin this journey today,
  • 00:04:11.010 --> 00:04:13.020
  • I want to encourage you to lean into it.
  • 00:04:13.030 --> 00:04:16.230
  • This season for me has always been one of great
  • 00:04:16.240 --> 00:04:21.020
  • spiritual growth.
  • 00:04:21.030 --> 00:04:23.130
  • In fact, looking back over my life,
  • 00:04:23.140 --> 00:04:25.040
  • I've discovered that it is during this season that
  • 00:04:25.050 --> 00:04:27.220
  • I've experienced the greatest degree of soul growth.
  • 00:04:27.230 --> 00:04:31.290
  • And it's not that there's anything magical about the
  • 00:04:32.000 --> 00:04:34.040
  • season, it is simply because that this is the time when
  • 00:04:34.050 --> 00:04:38.020
  • I personally become more intentional about seeking God.
  • 00:04:38.030 --> 00:04:43.110
  • And the reality is when it comes to spiritual growth in each
  • 00:04:43.120 --> 00:04:46.130
  • of our lives, spiritual growth happens two different ways.
  • 00:04:46.140 --> 00:04:49.240
  • First of all, it happens naturally, organically.
  • 00:04:49.250 --> 00:04:53.200
  • It happens as we walk with Jesus,
  • 00:04:53.210 --> 00:04:57.130
  • as we journey through life, as we face unexpected challenges,
  • 00:04:57.140 --> 00:05:01.210
  • and as we celebrate the victories that we've been
  • 00:05:01.220 --> 00:05:04.150
  • promised and sometimes it's hard to even measure
  • 00:05:04.160 --> 00:05:07.090
  • spiritual growth.
  • 00:05:07.100 --> 00:05:08.190
  • It's something that you look back upon and you realize,
  • 00:05:08.200 --> 00:05:10.240
  • "Hey, I've grown here.
  • 00:05:10.250 --> 00:05:14.010
  • The things that used to defeat me no longer defeat me.
  • 00:05:14.020 --> 00:05:17.160
  • The things that used to bring despair in my life no longer
  • 00:05:17.170 --> 00:05:20.140
  • bring despair in my life.
  • 00:05:20.150 --> 00:05:22.020
  • The things that used to sidetrack me
  • 00:05:22.030 --> 00:05:23.260
  • no longer sidetrack me."
  • 00:05:23.270 --> 00:05:25.060
  • And sometimes, spiritual growth is best measured by looking
  • 00:05:25.070 --> 00:05:28.000
  • at the past season of your life, not looking at the immediacy
  • 00:05:28.010 --> 00:05:31.240
  • of your life.
  • 00:05:31.250 --> 00:05:33.220
  • So much spiritual growth just happens naturally.
  • 00:05:33.230 --> 00:05:36.250
  • You may not realize this you're growing in this moment,
  • 00:05:36.260 --> 00:05:39.100
  • but trust me, if you're following Jesus,
  • 00:05:39.110 --> 00:05:41.200
  • if you're applying the Scripture,
  • 00:05:41.210 --> 00:05:43.190
  • if you're leaning into the work of the Spirit,
  • 00:05:43.200 --> 00:05:45.280
  • you are growing whether you realize it or not.
  • 00:05:45.290 --> 00:05:51.040
  • Much of growth is organic but on the other hand a lot of growth
  • 00:05:51.050 --> 00:05:55.170
  • is also intentional.
  • 00:05:55.180 --> 00:05:58.000
  • Intentional, those moments when we say,
  • 00:05:58.010 --> 00:06:00.130
  • "God, I need to grow in this area.
  • 00:06:00.140 --> 00:06:03.140
  • God, there's this thing that keeps defeating me,
  • 00:06:03.150 --> 00:06:06.080
  • this thing that keeps sidetracking me,
  • 00:06:06.090 --> 00:06:08.170
  • this thing that has become a barrier to my purpose,
  • 00:06:08.180 --> 00:06:12.070
  • to my future, to your amazing plan for my life.
  • 00:06:12.080 --> 00:06:15.030
  • And so, I'm not just going to ignore it but I'm going
  • 00:06:15.040 --> 00:06:17.220
  • to intentionally present it before you.
  • 00:06:17.230 --> 00:06:20.290
  • And I'm asking you to put grace upon it,
  • 00:06:21.000 --> 00:06:22.260
  • and I'm asking you to transform it,
  • 00:06:22.270 --> 00:06:24.290
  • and I'm asking you to work in it."
  • 00:06:25.000 --> 00:06:28.130
  • It is through the intentionality of presenting our lives before
  • 00:06:28.140 --> 00:06:32.120
  • God that growth also occurs.
  • 00:06:32.130 --> 00:06:36.040
  • And so, I want to encourage us, let's be intentional about
  • 00:06:36.050 --> 00:06:41.070
  • growing our souls.
  • 00:06:41.080 --> 00:06:43.160
  • Let's surrender whatever areas of our lives need to be
  • 00:06:43.170 --> 00:06:46.280
  • surrendered to grace.
  • 00:06:46.290 --> 00:06:48.110
  • Let's invite God to work in those areas,
  • 00:06:48.120 --> 00:06:51.020
  • and let's be expectant that when we arrive on celebration Sunday,
  • 00:06:51.030 --> 00:06:57.010
  • that we're going to arrive there knowing that God is at work in
  • 00:06:57.020 --> 00:07:01.090
  • our life and that these days have been measurable moments
  • 00:07:01.100 --> 00:07:05.250
  • of spiritual progress.
  • 00:07:05.260 --> 00:07:09.090
  • I think we can believe for that. I think we can ask God for that.
  • 00:07:09.100 --> 00:07:13.210
  • And I think if we will, God will work and the reason I do
  • 00:07:13.220 --> 00:07:16.280
  • is because Jeremiah 29:13 says, God speaking,
  • 00:07:16.290 --> 00:07:21.220
  • "You will seek me and find me, when you seek me
  • 00:07:21.230 --> 00:07:27.220
  • with all your heart."
  • 00:07:27.230 --> 00:07:30.050
  • God says, "If you become intentional about this,
  • 00:07:30.060 --> 00:07:33.170
  • you will encounter me.
  • 00:07:33.180 --> 00:07:35.120
  • If you set your heart to know me,
  • 00:07:35.130 --> 00:07:38.030
  • and to experience me, you will discover me."
  • 00:07:38.040 --> 00:07:43.130
  • And as we do today, I'm launching a brand-new series
  • 00:07:43.140 --> 00:07:46.100
  • that has come to be known around here as the Jesus Series.
  • 00:07:46.110 --> 00:07:51.070
  • And I want to begin by unpacking Jesus, unpacking Jesus.
  • 00:07:51.080 --> 00:07:56.190
  • There's a silly, little story that I love about a Sunday
  • 00:07:56.200 --> 00:07:59.290
  • schoolteacher who once asked her young class the question,
  • 00:08:00.020 --> 00:08:04.170
  • "What's brown, furry, has a long,
  • 00:08:04.180 --> 00:08:07.010
  • bushy tail and loves to eat acorns?"
  • 00:08:07.020 --> 00:08:10.070
  • A little boy who had just started attending church
  • 00:08:10.080 --> 00:08:12.210
  • raised his hand and said, "I think the answer is Jesus
  • 00:08:12.220 --> 00:08:16.200
  • but it sure sounds like a squirrel to me."
  • 00:08:16.210 --> 00:08:21.190
  • I know it's a dad joke, but I love it.
  • 00:08:21.200 --> 00:08:24.170
  • And you know it's true because if you've been around church
  • 00:08:24.180 --> 00:08:26.240
  • for any length of time, then you know that Jesus is the answer
  • 00:08:26.250 --> 00:08:31.130
  • to everything.
  • 00:08:31.140 --> 00:08:33.280
  • What do you believe about Calvinism?
  • 00:08:33.290 --> 00:08:36.040
  • Jesus.
  • 00:08:36.050 --> 00:08:38.070
  • What do you believe about the Rapture?
  • 00:08:38.080 --> 00:08:40.070
  • Jesus.
  • 00:08:40.080 --> 00:08:41.260
  • What are you having for lunch today?
  • 00:08:41.270 --> 00:08:43.110
  • Jesus.
  • 00:08:43.120 --> 00:08:45.140
  • As church people, we know Jesus is the answer to everything
  • 00:08:45.150 --> 00:08:50.140
  • but that brings me to two very important questions,
  • 00:08:50.150 --> 00:08:53.060
  • if Jesus is, in fact, the answer to everything,
  • 00:08:53.070 --> 00:08:57.100
  • number one, who was Jesus historically?
  • 00:08:57.110 --> 00:09:01.120
  • And second, who is Jesus to you personally?
  • 00:09:01.130 --> 00:09:05.280
  • Terry: But I think the negative side of familiarity is
  • 00:09:06.220 --> 00:09:08.230
  • that sometimes we then put him in a box and we don't realize
  • 00:09:08.240 --> 00:09:11.220
  • that he is God and that he can do so much more than what
  • 00:09:11.230 --> 00:09:15.220
  • we have experienced in our past.
  • 00:09:15.230 --> 00:09:18.060
  • There is more in store for each of us in following Jesus
  • 00:09:18.070 --> 00:09:21.280
  • if we are willing to encounter him every single day
  • 00:09:21.290 --> 00:09:25.250
  • in a new and fresh way.
  • 00:09:25.260 --> 00:09:28.210
  • to everything.
  • 00:09:37.220 --> 00:09:39.150
  • Who was Jesus historically and who is Jesus personally?
  • 00:09:39.160 --> 00:09:44.120
  • I think those two questions are foundational to our faith
  • 00:09:44.130 --> 00:09:48.150
  • and one answer informs the other.
  • 00:09:48.160 --> 00:09:52.030
  • The answer to the question, who was Jesus historically informs
  • 00:09:52.040 --> 00:09:56.250
  • the answer to the question, who is Jesus to me personally?
  • 00:09:56.260 --> 00:10:02.180
  • Let me explain it this way, what if you had to fill in the blank,
  • 00:10:02.190 --> 00:10:06.130
  • "Jesus was blank," what would you put in that blank?
  • 00:10:06.140 --> 00:10:12.190
  • Perhaps some of you here today would say, a religious leader.
  • 00:10:12.200 --> 00:10:16.030
  • Jesus was a religious leader
  • 00:10:16.040 --> 00:10:18.180
  • or a kind and compassionate teacher.
  • 00:10:18.190 --> 00:10:22.040
  • Maybe others would say, he was a prophet or a great humanitarian.
  • 00:10:22.050 --> 00:10:26.280
  • There are those here today who would clearly
  • 00:10:26.290 --> 00:10:28.270
  • and without any sense of hesitation say he is Lord.
  • 00:10:28.280 --> 00:10:34.130
  • Others in the world around us might say, liar, not true.
  • 00:10:34.140 --> 00:10:39.100
  • His claims are unfounded, unjustified, and Jesus
  • 00:10:39.110 --> 00:10:41.260
  • was a liar, the perpetrator of a great religious hoax.
  • 00:10:41.270 --> 00:10:47.080
  • And others might even claim that Jesus was delusional.
  • 00:10:47.090 --> 00:10:51.190
  • He was a lunatic.
  • 00:10:51.200 --> 00:10:53.090
  • What would you put into the blank "Jesus was"?
  • 00:10:53.100 --> 00:10:56.150
  • I think that's important because the answer to that informs
  • 00:10:56.160 --> 00:10:59.210
  • how you would answer this question, "Jesus is what?"
  • 00:10:59.220 --> 00:11:05.180
  • If you had to give an answer to the question or to fill in
  • 00:11:05.190 --> 00:11:08.250
  • the blank, "Jesus is," how would you answer that?
  • 00:11:08.260 --> 00:11:13.110
  • The "was" informs the "is."
  • 00:11:13.120 --> 00:11:16.120
  • If you know who Jesus was historically and biblically,
  • 00:11:16.130 --> 00:11:20.210
  • who Jesus was in truth and in reality,
  • 00:11:20.220 --> 00:11:24.210
  • then you can understand how Jesus desires to interact with
  • 00:11:24.220 --> 00:11:27.240
  • you personally and individually.
  • 00:11:27.250 --> 00:11:31.030
  • If you know who Jesus was, then you know who Jesus is.
  • 00:11:31.040 --> 00:11:37.170
  • How would you fill in that blank,
  • 00:11:37.180 --> 00:11:39.260
  • "Jesus is my best friend"?
  • 00:11:39.270 --> 00:11:43.150
  • Some would say, "My life coach."
  • 00:11:43.160 --> 00:11:46.010
  • Others would say, "He is the way,
  • 00:11:46.020 --> 00:11:47.160
  • the truth, and the life."
  • 00:11:47.170 --> 00:11:50.100
  • Others would say, "Savior, healer,
  • 00:11:50.110 --> 00:11:53.270
  • miracle worker, soon coming King."
  • 00:11:53.280 --> 00:11:57.140
  • The question is how do you see Jesus?
  • 00:11:57.150 --> 00:12:01.240
  • Have you ever noticed how so many people have this way of
  • 00:12:01.250 --> 00:12:04.060
  • conforming Jesus into their own image or at least into the image
  • 00:12:04.070 --> 00:12:08.190
  • of what they want him to be?
  • 00:12:08.200 --> 00:12:12.020
  • I think most Christ followers would never intentionally
  • 00:12:12.030 --> 00:12:15.100
  • diminish Jesus.
  • 00:12:15.110 --> 00:12:17.010
  • They would never allow his status to be lessened and yet
  • 00:12:17.020 --> 00:12:21.150
  • oftentimes, without meaning to, they devalue Jesus by recreating
  • 00:12:21.160 --> 00:12:26.210
  • Jesus in their own image instead of embracing him in the way that
  • 00:12:26.220 --> 00:12:30.240
  • he is revealed to us in the gospels.
  • 00:12:30.250 --> 00:12:34.210
  • It's what I've come to call the fashion of the Christ.
  • 00:12:34.220 --> 00:12:39.100
  • Yeah, it is this interesting little thing we do
  • 00:12:39.110 --> 00:12:41.270
  • when we dress Jesus up in the clothing of our culture,
  • 00:12:41.280 --> 00:12:46.140
  • or of our religious tradition, or of our personal preferences,
  • 00:12:46.150 --> 00:12:50.190
  • or our individual beliefs.
  • 00:12:50.200 --> 00:12:52.190
  • Some people dress him up in the image of their denomination.
  • 00:12:52.200 --> 00:12:56.050
  • Other people dress him up in the image
  • 00:12:56.060 --> 00:12:58.050
  • of their political affiliation.
  • 00:12:58.060 --> 00:13:00.150
  • And other people dress him up in an image that protects their
  • 00:13:00.160 --> 00:13:03.070
  • biases and their prejudices and that's why we have so many
  • 00:13:03.080 --> 00:13:07.230
  • different Jesuses running around the planet today.
  • 00:13:07.240 --> 00:13:13.080
  • Everywhere you go, someone claims to have the final word on
  • 00:13:13.090 --> 00:13:18.260
  • who Jesus is and interestingly, some of those claims
  • 00:13:18.270 --> 00:13:23.170
  • are even contradictory.
  • 00:13:23.180 --> 00:13:26.070
  • Everybody says, this is who he is.
  • 00:13:26.080 --> 00:13:29.230
  • Just google images of Jesus and you'll see what I mean.
  • 00:13:29.240 --> 00:13:35.110
  • You don't have to look very far to see pictures of Jesus
  • 00:13:35.120 --> 00:13:38.060
  • as a blue-eyed, blond-haired Scandinavian,
  • 00:13:38.070 --> 00:13:43.130
  • or a weed-smoking Rastafarian.
  • 00:13:43.140 --> 00:13:47.120
  • You'll discover Jesus as a card-carrying Republican,
  • 00:13:47.130 --> 00:13:52.170
  • or as a socially conscious Democrat,
  • 00:13:52.180 --> 00:13:55.240
  • or as a white peace-loving socialist,
  • 00:13:55.250 --> 00:13:59.030
  • or as a radical black activist, or as an Asian
  • 00:13:59.040 --> 00:14:02.240
  • who has discovered enlightenment.
  • 00:14:02.250 --> 00:14:05.020
  • The truth is, it seems that everybody has co-opted Jesus
  • 00:14:05.030 --> 00:14:08.250
  • for their own purposes.
  • 00:14:08.260 --> 00:14:11.200
  • Everybody has made him their poster boy
  • 00:14:11.210 --> 00:14:15.170
  • for their personal cause.
  • 00:14:15.180 --> 00:14:18.040
  • And so many times again, those images are directly in conflict
  • 00:14:18.050 --> 00:14:23.240
  • one with the other, which brings me to this little idea.
  • 00:14:23.250 --> 00:14:29.020
  • I think we say that we want to be like Jesus but the truth is,
  • 00:14:29.030 --> 00:14:34.090
  • we want Jesus to be like us.
  • 00:14:34.100 --> 00:14:37.280
  • In fact, for 2.000 years, the world has sought after him in
  • 00:14:37.290 --> 00:14:40.250
  • the hopes that the one that we find will actually endorse what
  • 00:14:40.260 --> 00:14:44.290
  • we already believe instead of finding the one who will meet us
  • 00:14:45.000 --> 00:14:49.170
  • with grace and truth.
  • 00:14:49.180 --> 00:14:51.130
  • We want a Jesus who is on your side.
  • 00:14:51.140 --> 00:14:53.270
  • We want a Jesus who endorses our candidate.
  • 00:14:53.280 --> 00:14:57.030
  • We want a Jesus who affirms our lifestyle and reaffirms
  • 00:14:57.040 --> 00:15:00.220
  • our beliefs.
  • 00:15:00.230 --> 00:15:02.040
  • So, we say that we want to know him but oftentimes,
  • 00:15:02.050 --> 00:15:05.010
  • we really want the him that we know to be exactly who we need
  • 00:15:05.020 --> 00:15:09.280
  • him to be to support what we already believe in life.
  • 00:15:09.290 --> 00:15:15.180
  • So, instead of being conformed into the image of Christ,
  • 00:15:15.190 --> 00:15:18.270
  • we've remade Jesus into an image of what we want him to be
  • 00:15:18.280 --> 00:15:22.260
  • to support our own preferences in life.
  • 00:15:22.270 --> 00:15:26.170
  • But I wonder what would happen if we were to set aside
  • 00:15:26.180 --> 00:15:29.190
  • all of the accessories that we've used to place on him,
  • 00:15:29.200 --> 00:15:34.150
  • if we just decided look, "We're going to approach Jesus afresh
  • 00:15:34.160 --> 00:15:38.190
  • and anew and we're gonna dig through the gospels in search
  • 00:15:38.200 --> 00:15:41.170
  • of the discovery of the one who is God in the flesh,
  • 00:15:41.180 --> 00:15:45.100
  • not the one that we have recreated in our own image but
  • 00:15:45.110 --> 00:15:48.100
  • the one that God formed, the one that is fully God and fully man,
  • 00:15:48.110 --> 00:15:53.060
  • the one who is fully grace and fully truth,
  • 00:15:53.070 --> 00:15:55.260
  • the one who is all that we've experienced in the past
  • 00:15:55.270 --> 00:15:58.210
  • but even so much more."
  • 00:15:58.220 --> 00:16:00.120
  • I wonder what could happen if we set aside our pet doctrines,
  • 00:16:00.130 --> 00:16:04.080
  • our ideas, our philosophies, our denominational upbringing,
  • 00:16:04.090 --> 00:16:08.120
  • and we went in search of Jesus all over again?
  • 00:16:08.130 --> 00:16:15.090
  • What do you think we might discover there?
  • 00:16:15.100 --> 00:16:18.040
  • Could it be a picture of Jesus that is fresh,
  • 00:16:18.050 --> 00:16:24.000
  • a picture of Jesus that maybe even reaffirms what we already
  • 00:16:24.010 --> 00:16:28.090
  • know to be true but yet expands our view into aspects
  • 00:16:28.100 --> 00:16:34.230
  • of the heart of God that we've not yet experienced.
  • 00:16:34.240 --> 00:16:39.070
  • What if we set aside our pet doctrines,
  • 00:16:39.080 --> 00:16:40.290
  • and our personal preferences, and our fears,
  • 00:16:41.000 --> 00:16:43.050
  • and our longings, and we gave up our deep-seated prejudices,
  • 00:16:43.060 --> 00:16:47.190
  • and our biases and we just decided that we're going to go
  • 00:16:47.200 --> 00:16:51.200
  • in search of the Jesus who is biblical,
  • 00:16:51.210 --> 00:16:54.110
  • the Jesus who is authentic, the Jesus is who God made him to be,
  • 00:16:54.120 --> 00:17:01.090
  • the one fully God and fully man, what could happen in our lives?
  • 00:17:01.100 --> 00:17:06.200
  • I think this is a big deal and I think it's a big deal even for
  • 00:17:06.210 --> 00:17:09.280
  • those of us who have walked with Jesus for some time
  • 00:17:09.290 --> 00:17:13.290
  • because oftentimes, familiarity creates a certain definition
  • 00:17:14.000 --> 00:17:19.240
  • that becomes a barrier to experiencing even more.
  • 00:17:19.250 --> 00:17:25.020
  • Have you ever noticed that in a relationship?
  • 00:17:25.030 --> 00:17:26.280
  • Have you ever walked with somebody relationally and you
  • 00:17:26.290 --> 00:17:29.050
  • just thought you knew them so well until one day they did
  • 00:17:29.060 --> 00:17:32.100
  • something that absolutely surprised you and you felt like
  • 00:17:32.110 --> 00:17:35.090
  • you had suddenly discovered a hidden talent
  • 00:17:35.100 --> 00:17:37.180
  • they didn't have before?
  • 00:17:37.190 --> 00:17:40.180
  • And they've said, "Well, I've always been able to do this.
  • 00:17:40.190 --> 00:17:43.290
  • You just didn't ask. This is who I've always been.
  • 00:17:44.000 --> 00:17:48.000
  • You just never really cared to know."
  • 00:17:48.010 --> 00:17:50.280
  • And I think that's the way it is oftentimes with Jesus.
  • 00:17:50.290 --> 00:17:53.220
  • In walking with him, we become familiar with him and there's
  • 00:17:53.230 --> 00:17:57.000
  • the good side of familiarity.
  • 00:17:57.010 --> 00:17:59.020
  • There's the side where that we know he is reliable,
  • 00:17:59.030 --> 00:18:02.000
  • and he's faithful, and he's dependable,
  • 00:18:02.010 --> 00:18:04.090
  • but I think the negative side of familiarity is that sometimes we
  • 00:18:04.100 --> 00:18:07.180
  • then put him in a box and we don't realize that he is God and
  • 00:18:07.190 --> 00:18:11.160
  • that he can do so much more than what we have experienced
  • 00:18:11.170 --> 00:18:14.250
  • in our past.
  • 00:18:14.260 --> 00:18:16.100
  • There is more in store for each of us in following Jesus
  • 00:18:16.110 --> 00:18:19.230
  • if we are willing to encounter him every single day
  • 00:18:19.240 --> 00:18:23.270
  • in a new and fresh way.
  • 00:18:23.280 --> 00:18:27.240
  • Who is Jesus historically and who is Jesus personally?
  • 00:18:27.250 --> 00:18:34.100
  • Terry: He is the great I Am which means he is always present
  • 00:18:35.010 --> 00:18:40.010
  • in every situation with exactly what you need in that moment
  • 00:18:40.020 --> 00:18:44.200
  • of time.
  • 00:18:44.210 --> 00:18:46.000
  • And just because you haven't seen him this way in previous
  • 00:18:46.010 --> 00:18:49.030
  • moments doesn't mean that he isn't this way
  • 00:18:49.040 --> 00:18:52.110
  • in previous moments.
  • 00:18:52.120 --> 00:18:53.230
  • It is simply that he chooses to reveal himself in relationship
  • 00:18:53.240 --> 00:18:57.180
  • to what we need in our lives at exactly the moment in which
  • 00:18:57.190 --> 00:19:01.230
  • we need it.
  • 00:19:01.240 --> 00:19:03.090
  • profoundly because we know that at at least two occasions
  • 00:19:11.080 --> 00:19:14.170
  • in the gospels that Jesus actually addressed the issue.
  • 00:19:14.180 --> 00:19:19.050
  • Let me talk about one of those for a few moments
  • 00:19:19.060 --> 00:19:21.080
  • here this morning.
  • 00:19:21.090 --> 00:19:22.190
  • If you have your Bibles turn with me to Matthew's gospel
  • 00:19:22.200 --> 00:19:24.140
  • chapter 16 and verse 13.
  • 00:19:24.150 --> 00:19:26.210
  • Matthew 16 and verse 13 kind of centers on this idea
  • 00:19:26.220 --> 00:19:29.060
  • of who Jesus is.
  • 00:19:29.070 --> 00:19:32.240
  • It begins this way, "Now when Jesus came into the district
  • 00:19:32.250 --> 00:19:35.100
  • of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples,
  • 00:19:35.110 --> 00:19:38.100
  • 'Who do people say that the Son of Man is?'"
  • 00:19:38.110 --> 00:19:43.110
  • "What's the word on the street about me?
  • 00:19:43.120 --> 00:19:46.090
  • I know that there are people talking about me and I'd like
  • 00:19:46.100 --> 00:19:50.070
  • to know what their perception of me is."
  • 00:19:50.080 --> 00:19:53.100
  • And this must have really shocked the disciples because
  • 00:19:53.110 --> 00:19:56.140
  • the disciples themselves were kind of struggling with
  • 00:19:56.150 --> 00:19:59.070
  • this whole idea.
  • 00:19:59.080 --> 00:20:00.200
  • They were a little confused about who he was and we can tell
  • 00:20:00.210 --> 00:20:04.240
  • that by just looking at their response.
  • 00:20:04.250 --> 00:20:08.040
  • The disciples responded and said,
  • 00:20:08.050 --> 00:20:09.290
  • "Well, Lord, there's a lot of different opinions out there
  • 00:20:10.000 --> 00:20:12.130
  • on the street.
  • 00:20:12.140 --> 00:20:14.170
  • Some say that you're Elijah, reincarnated from the dead.
  • 00:20:14.180 --> 00:20:18.180
  • Others believe you're a Baptist.
  • 00:20:18.190 --> 00:20:21.030
  • We, of course, know you're a Pentecostal but others believe
  • 00:20:21.040 --> 00:20:23.010
  • you're Baptist.
  • 00:20:23.020 --> 00:20:25.000
  • And then there are those out there,
  • 00:20:25.010 --> 00:20:26.280
  • Lord, who really think you're one of the Old Testament
  • 00:20:26.290 --> 00:20:29.010
  • prophets who has come back to life all over again."
  • 00:20:29.020 --> 00:20:33.170
  • I think it's interesting that they're all looking for a repeat
  • 00:20:33.180 --> 00:20:36.170
  • performance instead of opening their hearts to the possibility
  • 00:20:36.180 --> 00:20:41.190
  • that he could be something more than what they've seen
  • 00:20:41.200 --> 00:20:45.100
  • in the past.
  • 00:20:45.110 --> 00:20:47.220
  • And I think there's a lesson in that for all of us here today,
  • 00:20:47.230 --> 00:20:50.170
  • a lesson when it comes to our past experiences with Jesus.
  • 00:20:50.180 --> 00:20:55.120
  • Don't let who he has been to you in the past limit who he wants
  • 00:20:55.130 --> 00:20:59.270
  • to be to you in the future.
  • 00:20:59.280 --> 00:21:03.010
  • He is the Great I Am, which means he is always present
  • 00:21:03.020 --> 00:21:07.280
  • in every situation with exactly what you need in that moment
  • 00:21:07.290 --> 00:21:12.230
  • of time and just because you haven't seen him this way
  • 00:21:12.240 --> 00:21:16.050
  • in previous moments doesn't mean that he isn't this way
  • 00:21:16.060 --> 00:21:20.110
  • in previous moments.
  • 00:21:20.120 --> 00:21:21.210
  • It is simply that he chooses to reveal himself in relationship
  • 00:21:21.220 --> 00:21:25.090
  • to what we need in our lives at exactly the moment in which
  • 00:21:25.100 --> 00:21:29.240
  • we need it.
  • 00:21:29.250 --> 00:21:32.100
  • We always is who he always is.
  • 00:21:32.110 --> 00:21:35.130
  • Is that good grammar or bad grammar?
  • 00:21:35.140 --> 00:21:37.060
  • But we don't know him to be who he is until we need him to be
  • 00:21:37.070 --> 00:21:42.170
  • who he is.
  • 00:21:42.180 --> 00:21:44.240
  • And here's why this is so important.
  • 00:21:44.250 --> 00:21:46.210
  • None of us has seen Jesus in all of his glory and fullness so
  • 00:21:46.220 --> 00:21:50.150
  • whatever we've seen, regardless of how great it is was,
  • 00:21:50.160 --> 00:21:54.240
  • there is so much more to be experienced.
  • 00:21:54.250 --> 00:21:58.010
  • And your answer to who Jesus is has to be based on biblical
  • 00:21:58.020 --> 00:22:01.100
  • understanding but it also has to be based on an ongoing
  • 00:22:01.110 --> 00:22:04.130
  • relationship and openness to him to be to you what you need
  • 00:22:04.140 --> 00:22:10.110
  • in that moment.
  • 00:22:10.120 --> 00:22:12.050
  • I wonder today if Jesus were to ask each of us the same
  • 00:22:12.060 --> 00:22:15.140
  • question, "Who do people say that I am?"
  • 00:22:15.150 --> 00:22:17.290
  • What would your response be?
  • 00:22:18.000 --> 00:22:21.000
  • "Well Lord, the church says that you're this.
  • 00:22:21.010 --> 00:22:25.050
  • Well Lord, I had a professor in college that said you were this.
  • 00:22:25.060 --> 00:22:30.010
  • Well Lord, popular culture says you are this."
  • 00:22:30.020 --> 00:22:33.040
  • We're at this season of the year when over the next 40 days,
  • 00:22:33.050 --> 00:22:36.200
  • you'll turn on multiple channels on television and you'll find
  • 00:22:36.210 --> 00:22:40.130
  • different broadcasts about the life and story of Jesus.
  • 00:22:40.140 --> 00:22:45.030
  • And some of them lead us to the same place year after year
  • 00:22:45.040 --> 00:22:47.280
  • after year.
  • 00:22:47.290 --> 00:22:49.080
  • They present all of the facts and then they leave the question
  • 00:22:49.090 --> 00:22:51.010
  • hanging, "Was he God or wasn't he?
  • 00:22:51.020 --> 00:22:53.020
  • We'll never really know," they say.
  • 00:22:53.030 --> 00:22:55.250
  • And it always seems to lead to the same conclusion,
  • 00:22:55.260 --> 00:22:58.280
  • the same indecisive position over and over again,
  • 00:22:58.290 --> 00:23:02.010
  • but I think at least it's good because Jesus is being talked
  • 00:23:02.020 --> 00:23:05.150
  • about and we have an opportunity to seize on that moment to share
  • 00:23:05.160 --> 00:23:09.020
  • who we know Jesus to be based upon biblical revelation
  • 00:23:09.030 --> 00:23:13.010
  • and our personal encounter with him.
  • 00:23:13.020 --> 00:23:18.000
  • This is what the culture says or maybe some would say,
  • 00:23:18.010 --> 00:23:21.240
  • "This is a popular evangelical view of who Jesus is."
  • 00:23:21.250 --> 00:23:27.080
  • Who is Jesus to you?
  • 00:23:27.090 --> 00:23:30.260
  • Here's the beautiful thing about this, Jesus asked the question,
  • 00:23:30.270 --> 00:23:34.020
  • "Who does the world say that I am?"
  • 00:23:34.030 --> 00:23:37.180
  • But he doesn't let the point rest there.
  • 00:23:37.190 --> 00:23:40.090
  • He then personalizes it.
  • 00:23:40.100 --> 00:23:42.230
  • Okay, you've given me that now I want to know,
  • 00:23:42.240 --> 00:23:44.160
  • "Who do you say that I am?
  • 00:23:44.170 --> 00:23:47.250
  • What is your personal revelation of me?"
  • 00:23:47.260 --> 00:23:50.060
  • Because ultimately, we all have to give an account for who
  • 00:23:50.070 --> 00:23:53.030
  • we believe Jesus is and we can't hide behind the opinions
  • 00:23:53.040 --> 00:23:57.020
  • of the people around us.
  • 00:23:57.030 --> 00:24:00.240
  • Fundamentally, that first question sets up the second.
  • 00:24:00.250 --> 00:24:05.040
  • Do you know who Jesus is? Who is he to you?
  • 00:24:05.050 --> 00:24:10.250
  • That's really at the heart of the matter.
  • 00:24:10.260 --> 00:24:13.120
  • That's really the point of it all.
  • 00:24:13.130 --> 00:24:16.190
  • Now, in the Jewish Midrash, which was
  • 00:24:16.200 --> 00:24:19.030
  • the rabbinical teaching of the Scriptures of that day,
  • 00:24:19.040 --> 00:24:21.250
  • there was this idea, the idea was that Israel was
  • 00:24:21.260 --> 00:24:25.000
  • the center of the world and at the center of Israel,
  • 00:24:25.010 --> 00:24:28.200
  • was the city of Jerusalem.
  • 00:24:28.210 --> 00:24:31.030
  • And at the center of the city of Jerusalem,
  • 00:24:31.040 --> 00:24:33.140
  • was the temple and at the center of the temple was
  • 00:24:33.150 --> 00:24:36.130
  • the Holy of Holies.
  • 00:24:36.140 --> 00:24:38.180
  • And at the center of the Holy of Holies was the tabernacle,
  • 00:24:38.190 --> 00:24:42.030
  • the ark of the covenant, and that is where the presence
  • 00:24:42.040 --> 00:24:44.230
  • of God dwelt.
  • 00:24:44.240 --> 00:24:46.060
  • And all of that kind of focuses you deeper and deeper and deeper
  • 00:24:46.070 --> 00:24:50.180
  • until you get to the center of it all.
  • 00:24:50.190 --> 00:24:54.100
  • I think that's what Jesus is doing with this question,
  • 00:24:54.110 --> 00:24:57.220
  • "Who does the world say that I am?"
  • 00:24:57.230 --> 00:25:00.250
  • But he doesn't let it rest there.
  • 00:25:00.260 --> 00:25:02.080
  • He presses it deeper and deeper until finally it comes to the
  • 00:25:02.090 --> 00:25:05.240
  • center of everything when he stands nose to nose with them,
  • 00:25:05.250 --> 00:25:09.050
  • eyeball to eyeball with them and he asks them the question,
  • 00:25:09.060 --> 00:25:12.160
  • "Who do you say that I am?"
  • 00:25:12.170 --> 00:25:17.240
  • In other words, in the first question he's asking what the
  • 00:25:17.250 --> 00:25:21.000
  • disciples see and hear around him but in the second question,
  • 00:25:21.010 --> 00:25:24.230
  • he's asking what the disciples see and hear within them.
  • 00:25:24.240 --> 00:25:30.260
  • What does your heart say about this Jesus of Nazareth?
  • 00:25:30.270 --> 00:25:35.260
  • What does your heart really say about who he is?
  • 00:25:35.270 --> 00:25:39.010
  • He's always pushing us to go a little deeper within to discover
  • 00:25:39.020 --> 00:25:42.230
  • who he is, and to center our lives upon who he is,
  • 00:25:42.240 --> 00:25:47.140
  • and then to consistently recenter our lives upon
  • 00:25:47.150 --> 00:25:50.130
  • who he is.
  • 00:25:50.140 --> 00:25:51.230
  • The discipline of discipleship is to continually center
  • 00:25:51.240 --> 00:25:54.250
  • your life on Jesus.
  • 00:25:54.260 --> 00:25:59.090
  • That's the goal of our church, is not to center you
  • 00:25:59.100 --> 00:26:02.070
  • on Hillsong Church but to center you on Jesus.
  • 00:26:02.080 --> 00:26:07.010
  • Not to center you on Sunday morning or on Connect groups
  • 00:26:07.020 --> 00:26:10.010
  • but to center you on Jesus.
  • 00:26:10.020 --> 00:26:12.100
  • And all of those things, whether it is the attractiveness of our
  • 00:26:12.110 --> 00:26:15.160
  • church or it is, in fact, the dynamics of a worship service,
  • 00:26:15.170 --> 00:26:19.210
  • or it is the intimacy of a small group,
  • 00:26:19.220 --> 00:26:21.290
  • it is all designed to push you to Jesus so to ultimately you
  • 00:26:22.000 --> 00:26:25.220
  • center your life on him because it is in being centered upon
  • 00:26:25.230 --> 00:26:29.190
  • Jesus, you find out who you are and why you are alive.
  • 00:26:29.200 --> 00:26:34.200
  • Terry: We pray for them.
  • 00:26:36.030 --> 00:26:37.120
  • We water the soil of their hearts with encouragement,
  • 00:26:37.130 --> 00:26:39.290
  • with life-giving words of support in the right direction
  • 00:26:40.000 --> 00:26:43.260
  • but ultimately, salvation is a gift given by the God when
  • 00:26:43.270 --> 00:26:47.170
  • the Spirit draws people to God.
  • 00:26:47.180 --> 00:26:49.200
  • It takes a work of the Spirit to reveal who Jesus is and to bring
  • 00:26:49.210 --> 00:26:53.240
  • us into relationship with God.
  • 00:26:53.250 --> 00:26:56.200
  • Peter doesn't look to the past to make sense of who Jesus is.
  • 00:27:03.060 --> 00:27:06.090
  • He doesn't look to others to inform his decision.
  • 00:27:06.100 --> 00:27:09.160
  • He doesn't think about what's politically correct
  • 00:27:09.170 --> 00:27:11.240
  • or what others might suggest.
  • 00:27:11.250 --> 00:27:14.180
  • He simply dives right in and he says,
  • 00:27:14.190 --> 00:27:17.140
  • "You are the Anointed One.
  • 00:27:17.150 --> 00:27:19.290
  • You're the Messiah.
  • 00:27:20.000 --> 00:27:21.200
  • You're the Son of God.
  • 00:27:21.210 --> 00:27:23.040
  • You are God in the flesh.
  • 00:27:23.050 --> 00:27:24.140
  • You are the one that we have been longing for."
  • 00:27:24.150 --> 00:27:28.150
  • Now, the interesting thing about this passage,
  • 00:27:28.160 --> 00:27:31.060
  • in fact, there are two interesting things about it.
  • 00:27:31.070 --> 00:27:33.070
  • First of all, it's when it occurs.
  • 00:27:33.080 --> 00:27:36.260
  • Did you know this is two and a half years into Jesus' ministry?
  • 00:27:36.270 --> 00:27:41.070
  • Think about it, for 2 years at least,
  • 00:27:41.080 --> 00:27:43.190
  • they have walked with him.
  • 00:27:43.200 --> 00:27:45.220
  • They've talked with him.
  • 00:27:45.230 --> 00:27:47.190
  • They've seen the grace and compassion that flows from him.
  • 00:27:47.200 --> 00:27:51.030
  • For 2 years, they've seen the miracles,
  • 00:27:51.040 --> 00:27:53.090
  • blind eyes opened, bread broken and multiplied,
  • 00:27:53.100 --> 00:27:57.150
  • the dead even raised back to life.
  • 00:27:57.160 --> 00:28:00.200
  • For 2-1/2 years or at least 2 years, they have walked
  • 00:28:00.210 --> 00:28:03.270
  • with Jesus and they're still wondering who he is.
  • 00:28:03.280 --> 00:28:07.240
  • We're not sure, maybe Elijah, maybe John the Baptist,
  • 00:28:07.250 --> 00:28:10.210
  • maybe one of the other prophets.
  • 00:28:10.220 --> 00:28:12.040
  • We're not really sure.
  • 00:28:12.050 --> 00:28:13.140
  • Two and a half years in, they weren't settled.
  • 00:28:13.150 --> 00:28:18.060
  • That tells me you could come to church every single weekend and
  • 00:28:18.070 --> 00:28:21.240
  • not know who Jesus is until you really open your heart and say,
  • 00:28:21.250 --> 00:28:27.050
  • "God, show me with the eyes of my heart,
  • 00:28:27.060 --> 00:28:29.270
  • who this man called Jesus is."
  • 00:28:29.280 --> 00:28:32.160
  • And then once you catch a glimpse of it,
  • 00:28:32.170 --> 00:28:34.110
  • you have to confirm it with a step of faith.
  • 00:28:34.120 --> 00:28:41.190
  • Peter's a little uncertain but he says,
  • 00:28:41.200 --> 00:28:44.080
  • "I'm gonna take a stab at this because the eyes of my heart
  • 00:28:44.090 --> 00:28:48.140
  • have given me a glimpse of this.
  • 00:28:48.150 --> 00:28:50.230
  • You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."
  • 00:28:50.240 --> 00:28:55.240
  • I think the beauty of this man Jesus is that he always calls us
  • 00:28:55.250 --> 00:28:58.260
  • to accountability at just the right time,
  • 00:28:58.270 --> 00:29:02.080
  • doesn't force it upon us, doesn't demand it of us.
  • 00:29:02.090 --> 00:29:05.200
  • He allows us to come to the point where our hearts
  • 00:29:05.210 --> 00:29:09.050
  • acknowledge what they have seen.
  • 00:29:09.060 --> 00:29:11.130
  • He patiently, and faithfully, and gently walks with us through
  • 00:29:11.140 --> 00:29:15.080
  • this journey called life and he reveals himself to us and the
  • 00:29:15.090 --> 00:29:18.240
  • longer that we walk with him on this journey,
  • 00:29:18.250 --> 00:29:21.080
  • he reveals more of himself until at just the right time,
  • 00:29:21.090 --> 00:29:24.100
  • he calls us to an acknowledgment of who he is based on his terms
  • 00:29:24.110 --> 00:29:28.290
  • and based on his timing.
  • 00:29:29.000 --> 00:29:32.080
  • I think that's why we gotta be careful to avoid forcing
  • 00:29:32.090 --> 00:29:35.110
  • our revelation of Jesus on to other people.
  • 00:29:35.120 --> 00:29:38.040
  • You can share it, but you can't force it.
  • 00:29:38.050 --> 00:29:42.000
  • 'Cause if you force it, without their eyes being opened
  • 00:29:42.010 --> 00:29:45.140
  • to what their eyes are blind to, then they'll end up coming to
  • 00:29:45.150 --> 00:29:49.060
  • a conclusion based upon your revelation,
  • 00:29:49.070 --> 00:29:51.180
  • when Jesus wants so much more for them.
  • 00:29:51.190 --> 00:29:54.200
  • He wants them to come to a firsthand revelation,
  • 00:29:54.210 --> 00:29:57.030
  • to a personal encounter, to an individual connection with him.
  • 00:29:57.040 --> 00:30:03.000
  • So, what do we do?
  • 00:30:03.010 --> 00:30:04.160
  • We share with them who we know Jesus to be and we walk
  • 00:30:04.170 --> 00:30:07.270
  • with them and allow Jesus to reveal himself to them.
  • 00:30:07.280 --> 00:30:12.100
  • We pray for them.
  • 00:30:12.110 --> 00:30:13.200
  • We water the soil of their hearts with encouragement,
  • 00:30:13.210 --> 00:30:16.130
  • with life-giving words of support in the right direction.
  • 00:30:16.140 --> 00:30:20.060
  • But ultimately, salvation is a gift given by God when
  • 00:30:20.070 --> 00:30:24.000
  • the Spirit draws people to God.
  • 00:30:24.010 --> 00:30:26.010
  • It takes a work of the Spirit to reveal who Jesus is and to
  • 00:30:26.020 --> 00:30:30.000
  • bring us into relationship with God.
  • 00:30:30.010 --> 00:30:34.130
  • And a church that is a faithful presence understands how to walk
  • 00:30:34.140 --> 00:30:38.070
  • that line, understands how to do that journey with people knowing
  • 00:30:38.080 --> 00:30:43.280
  • when to speak and when to just let God work,
  • 00:30:43.290 --> 00:30:47.180
  • knowing when to share but never to force,
  • 00:30:47.190 --> 00:30:49.290
  • knowing how to encourage, but never to require,
  • 00:30:50.000 --> 00:30:55.180
  • just doing the journey with people, allowing grace
  • 00:30:55.190 --> 00:30:59.140
  • to work in their lives just as God has worked in ours.
  • 00:30:59.150 --> 00:31:04.080
  • The first thing is, Jesus allows this to play out
  • 00:31:04.090 --> 00:31:06.280
  • for over 2 years.
  • 00:31:06.290 --> 00:31:09.030
  • The second thing I find interesting is where it takes
  • 00:31:09.040 --> 00:31:11.190
  • place, not just when, but where.
  • 00:31:11.200 --> 00:31:14.150
  • It takes place in Caesarea Philippi.
  • 00:31:14.160 --> 00:31:17.070
  • There Jesus is standing at this place of power and prestige,
  • 00:31:17.080 --> 00:31:21.280
  • the place that was the seat of authority administratively
  • 00:31:21.290 --> 00:31:27.110
  • for the Roman emperor.
  • 00:31:27.120 --> 00:31:29.020
  • And it's there Jesus, against that backdrop of power and
  • 00:31:29.030 --> 00:31:32.070
  • authority, stands and expects them to recognize that this
  • 00:31:32.080 --> 00:31:36.290
  • humble carpenter of Nazareth is indeed the Son of God.
  • 00:31:37.000 --> 00:31:40.180
  • It's like Jesus is saying, "If you see who I am in contrast
  • 00:31:40.190 --> 00:31:44.100
  • to all of that, then you really will get me.
  • 00:31:44.110 --> 00:31:48.060
  • Don't look for me in the culture,
  • 00:31:48.070 --> 00:31:50.040
  • look for me in contrast to the culture.
  • 00:31:50.050 --> 00:31:53.020
  • Look for me in contrast."
  • 00:31:53.030 --> 00:31:56.050
  • I think it's a really powerful thing for us because it brings
  • 00:31:56.060 --> 00:31:58.160
  • us to this idea that he wants to reveal,
  • 00:31:58.170 --> 00:32:01.050
  • not only who he is, but he wants to reveal why he has come to us.
  • 00:32:01.060 --> 00:32:08.200
  • The question, who was Jesus historically and who is Jesus
  • 00:32:08.210 --> 00:32:11.260
  • personally, then leads to the third question and
  • 00:32:11.270 --> 00:32:15.280
  • the third question is, what has he come to do for us?
  • 00:32:15.290 --> 00:32:20.170
  • But you can't even answer the question what Jesus has come to
  • 00:32:20.180 --> 00:32:22.230
  • do for us unless you have some idea about what's even possible,
  • 00:32:22.240 --> 00:32:29.030
  • who he was and who he is.
  • 00:32:29.040 --> 00:32:31.010
  • Let me explain it this way, have you ever,
  • 00:32:31.020 --> 00:32:33.040
  • have you ever had someone ask you a question and expect an
  • 00:32:33.050 --> 00:32:38.040
  • answer from you and you didn't even know what the options were?
  • 00:32:38.050 --> 00:32:44.150
  • Yeah, we've all done that. I've done that to my wife.
  • 00:32:44.160 --> 00:32:47.150
  • "Sweetheart, you gotta make a decision."
  • 00:32:47.160 --> 00:32:48.270
  • And she's like, "I don't even know what the options are."
  • 00:32:48.280 --> 00:32:52.170
  • There's a restaurant in town.
  • 00:32:52.180 --> 00:32:53.270
  • I won't call the name of the restaurant.
  • 00:32:53.280 --> 00:32:55.230
  • It's a great restaurant, a fantastic restaurant,
  • 00:32:55.240 --> 00:32:58.060
  • but they did something that really confuses me and
  • 00:32:58.070 --> 00:33:00.130
  • if you are a member of the restaurant community,
  • 00:33:00.140 --> 00:33:03.100
  • if you're specialty is in restaurant management,
  • 00:33:03.110 --> 00:33:06.000
  • then maybe you can help me and enlighten me but I don't really
  • 00:33:06.010 --> 00:33:08.160
  • understand why it works this way and it's this,
  • 00:33:08.170 --> 00:33:10.160
  • when the restaurant goes in, they put up the menu board
  • 00:33:10.170 --> 00:33:15.010
  • and then a couple of weeks into it as traffic begins to build,
  • 00:33:15.020 --> 00:33:18.250
  • they hire people who will stand in line before your car gets to
  • 00:33:18.260 --> 00:33:23.100
  • the menu board and they ask you what you would like to order.
  • 00:33:23.110 --> 00:33:28.120
  • Anybody seen this phenomenon?
  • 00:33:28.130 --> 00:33:31.230
  • So, first time I went to the restaurant, I pull up,
  • 00:33:31.240 --> 00:33:33.260
  • roll down my window and there's a fresh-faced,
  • 00:33:33.270 --> 00:33:36.170
  • young teenager who says, "How can I help you, sir?"
  • 00:33:36.180 --> 00:33:40.270
  • And my question is, "What's on the menu?
  • 00:33:40.280 --> 00:33:46.050
  • I don't even know what you're serving.
  • 00:33:46.060 --> 00:33:48.000
  • I don't even know what my options are.
  • 00:33:48.010 --> 00:33:50.060
  • I've heard you have good food, but I don't even know what
  • 00:33:50.070 --> 00:33:52.240
  • my options are.
  • 00:33:52.250 --> 00:33:54.070
  • Could I just wait to drive up to the menu board so I can see
  • 00:33:54.080 --> 00:33:57.270
  • what's on the menu board and then I'll tell someone
  • 00:33:57.280 --> 00:34:00.220
  • or I'll go old school on you, baby.
  • 00:34:00.230 --> 00:34:02.230
  • I'll press the button and just shout in through
  • 00:34:02.240 --> 00:34:05.090
  • the crackly system, here's what I want to eat."
  • 00:34:05.100 --> 00:34:11.270
  • I don't even know the options.
  • 00:34:11.280 --> 00:34:13.220
  • That's the way it is with people.
  • 00:34:13.230 --> 00:34:15.110
  • They don't even know what the options are with Jesus because
  • 00:34:15.120 --> 00:34:17.170
  • they don't know he was and they don't know who he was.
  • 00:34:17.180 --> 00:34:20.210
  • So, when it comes to Jesus, a lot of people don't know
  • 00:34:20.220 --> 00:34:23.070
  • what the options are.
  • 00:34:23.080 --> 00:34:27.160
  • They don't realize that he was historically a healer and
  • 00:34:27.170 --> 00:34:29.280
  • he is presently a healer and in the absence of that,
  • 00:34:29.290 --> 00:34:32.250
  • they don't realize that they can believe for healing in their own
  • 00:34:32.260 --> 00:34:36.130
  • personal life.
  • 00:34:36.140 --> 00:34:39.100
  • They don't realize that historically he was a deliverer
  • 00:34:39.110 --> 00:34:41.210
  • and presently, he is a deliverer and so they don't realize
  • 00:34:41.220 --> 00:34:45.040
  • that they can have freedom in their own personal life.
  • 00:34:45.050 --> 00:34:47.250
  • So, they live their life managing their addictions,
  • 00:34:47.260 --> 00:34:51.080
  • which by the way, is a lot better than not managing
  • 00:34:51.090 --> 00:34:54.110
  • your addictions.
  • 00:34:54.120 --> 00:34:55.260
  • But ultimately, they fail to realize God wants freedom
  • 00:34:55.270 --> 00:34:58.230
  • for them.
  • 00:34:58.240 --> 00:35:00.280
  • But they don't even know what the options are.
  • 00:35:00.290 --> 00:35:03.160
  • That's why I want to show you what some of the options
  • 00:35:03.170 --> 00:35:05.230
  • are based on the scriptural revelation of who Jesus is and
  • 00:35:05.240 --> 00:35:10.240
  • based upon the character witness of thousands of people around
  • 00:35:10.250 --> 00:35:14.150
  • you who would say, "Not only have I seen that in the Bible,
  • 00:35:14.160 --> 00:35:18.070
  • but I've seen that in my personal life."
  • 00:35:18.080 --> 00:35:20.210
  • Jesus is Savior. Jesus is healer.
  • 00:35:20.220 --> 00:35:23.200
  • Jesus is miracle worker. Jesus is leader.
  • 00:35:23.210 --> 00:35:26.250
  • He is Lord. He is teacher.
  • 00:35:26.260 --> 00:35:28.260
  • He is restorer. He is rebuilder.
  • 00:35:28.270 --> 00:35:31.170
  • He is the one who repairs what seems to be broken
  • 00:35:31.180 --> 00:35:36.290
  • and gone in your life.
  • 00:35:37.000 --> 00:35:39.000
  • Terry: I've discovered the more I become like Jesus,
  • 00:35:39.230 --> 00:35:41.240
  • the more I become like Terry.
  • 00:35:41.250 --> 00:35:43.290
  • I don't mean broken Terry, jacked-up Terry.
  • 00:35:44.000 --> 00:35:46.130
  • I don't mean that Terry, I mean the Terry God originally
  • 00:35:46.140 --> 00:35:49.240
  • envisioned, the Terry God originally created,
  • 00:35:49.250 --> 00:35:52.240
  • the Terry that God had in mind from before the foundation
  • 00:35:52.250 --> 00:35:55.280
  • of the world.
  • 00:35:55.290 --> 00:35:57.080
  • The more I become like Jesus, the more I become present
  • 00:35:57.090 --> 00:35:59.200
  • in who he made me to be.
  • 00:35:59.210 --> 00:36:01.020
  • The more I become like Jesus, the more human I become.
  • 00:36:01.030 --> 00:36:05.030
  • the story of Jesus' life and that becomes a menu,
  • 00:36:15.050 --> 00:36:18.260
  • and I don't mean a menu in the sense that you pull up
  • 00:36:18.270 --> 00:36:21.020
  • and roll down your window your and say, "Okay,
  • 00:36:21.030 --> 00:36:22.250
  • give me this or that and I'm coming around the corner
  • 00:36:22.260 --> 00:36:25.210
  • so I expect it 90 seconds from now."
  • 00:36:25.220 --> 00:36:28.010
  • I don't mean that at all.
  • 00:36:28.020 --> 00:36:29.120
  • I mean the kind of menu that says,
  • 00:36:29.130 --> 00:36:30.270
  • "God, I believe you are the same Jesus,
  • 00:36:30.280 --> 00:36:33.080
  • yesterday, today, and forever.
  • 00:36:33.090 --> 00:36:35.010
  • I believe if you did it then and you've done it for others
  • 00:36:35.020 --> 00:36:38.050
  • around me, that you'll do it for me.
  • 00:36:38.060 --> 00:36:39.230
  • And so, I see that as a menu in the sense that my faith can
  • 00:36:39.240 --> 00:36:43.190
  • connect with it and I can believe you for great things
  • 00:36:43.200 --> 00:36:47.080
  • in my life."
  • 00:36:47.090 --> 00:36:49.260
  • Who was Jesus historically?
  • 00:36:49.270 --> 00:36:51.080
  • Who was Jesus personally, and what did Jesus come to do
  • 00:36:51.090 --> 00:36:57.290
  • for us?
  • 00:36:58.000 --> 00:37:00.070
  • What did Jesus come to do for us?
  • 00:37:00.080 --> 00:37:02.120
  • The amazing thing about it is that when we works in our lives,
  • 00:37:02.130 --> 00:37:06.000
  • some people might say, "Well, you know,
  • 00:37:06.010 --> 00:37:07.170
  • if I let Jesus into my life, he's gonna change some stuff."
  • 00:37:07.180 --> 00:37:11.110
  • Okay, you're right, you're right.
  • 00:37:11.120 --> 00:37:16.020
  • But the idea of change sometimes to some people
  • 00:37:16.030 --> 00:37:18.110
  • is that change means, "I'm gonna get ripped off.
  • 00:37:18.120 --> 00:37:23.170
  • If I go to church and start following Jesus, you know,
  • 00:37:23.180 --> 00:37:25.210
  • he's change some stuff.
  • 00:37:25.220 --> 00:37:27.010
  • I'm gonna get ripped off."
  • 00:37:27.020 --> 00:37:28.110
  • Can I present to you the idea that if you allow Jesus to work
  • 00:37:28.120 --> 00:37:31.260
  • in your life, that if he changes some stuff in you,
  • 00:37:31.270 --> 00:37:34.190
  • you're gonna be better off with the outcome of that because
  • 00:37:34.200 --> 00:37:39.030
  • he always has your best interest at heart?
  • 00:37:39.040 --> 00:37:43.050
  • You're gonna find yourself more fully present to your life.
  • 00:37:43.060 --> 00:37:49.260
  • You're gonna find yourself more fully present to others
  • 00:37:49.270 --> 00:37:53.240
  • in your life.
  • 00:37:53.250 --> 00:37:55.040
  • You're gonna find yourself more fully human.
  • 00:37:55.050 --> 00:37:57.200
  • I've discovered the more I become like Jesus,
  • 00:37:57.210 --> 00:38:00.040
  • the more I become like Terry.
  • 00:38:00.050 --> 00:38:03.200
  • I don't mean broken Terry, jacked-up Terry,
  • 00:38:03.210 --> 00:38:06.060
  • I don't mean that Terry.
  • 00:38:06.070 --> 00:38:07.220
  • I mean the Terry God originally envisioned,
  • 00:38:07.230 --> 00:38:10.100
  • the Terry God originally created, the Terry that God
  • 00:38:10.110 --> 00:38:13.140
  • had in mind from before the foundation of the world.
  • 00:38:13.150 --> 00:38:16.160
  • The more I become like Jesus, the more I become present
  • 00:38:16.170 --> 00:38:19.120
  • to who he made me to be.
  • 00:38:19.130 --> 00:38:21.160
  • The more I become like Jesus, the more human I become
  • 00:38:21.170 --> 00:38:26.190
  • and that isn't taking anything from me.
  • 00:38:26.200 --> 00:38:29.170
  • That's adding everything to me.
  • 00:38:29.180 --> 00:38:33.010
  • Listen to what the Bible says in Romans chapter 8, verse 29.
  • 00:38:33.020 --> 00:38:36.150
  • In fact, I'd like to ask you just to read this aloud
  • 00:38:36.160 --> 00:38:38.170
  • together with me.
  • 00:38:38.180 --> 00:38:40.040
  • Reading from The Message, "God knew what he was doing
  • 00:38:40.050 --> 00:38:43.030
  • from the very beginning.
  • 00:38:43.040 --> 00:38:44.250
  • He decided from the outset to shape the lives of those
  • 00:38:44.260 --> 00:38:47.210
  • who love him along the same lines as the life of his Son.
  • 00:38:47.220 --> 00:38:51.180
  • The Son stands first in the line of humanity he restored.
  • 00:38:51.190 --> 00:38:55.210
  • We see the original and intended shape of our lives
  • 00:38:55.220 --> 00:38:58.200
  • there in him."
  • 00:38:58.210 --> 00:39:01.230
  • Wow, I love that.
  • 00:39:01.240 --> 00:39:05.150
  • We see the original and intended shape of our lives there in him.
  • 00:39:05.160 --> 00:39:15.150
  • I'm not ripped off by following Jesus.
  • 00:39:15.160 --> 00:39:18.020
  • I'm not ripped off through my relationship with Jesus.
  • 00:39:18.030 --> 00:39:21.010
  • I'm not ripped off by allowing Jesus into my story,
  • 00:39:21.020 --> 00:39:24.090
  • to work in my life, to change who I am in accordance
  • 00:39:24.100 --> 00:39:27.220
  • with who God wants me to be, I'm not diminished by any of that.
  • 00:39:27.230 --> 00:39:31.020
  • I am positioned. I am elevated.
  • 00:39:31.030 --> 00:39:33.120
  • I am raised to a new level and quality of living and
  • 00:39:33.130 --> 00:39:36.090
  • all of that is because of God's amazing grace.
  • 00:39:36.100 --> 00:39:39.210
  • He loves you so much that he gave his very best to you
  • 00:39:39.220 --> 00:39:43.160
  • in Jesus.
  • 00:39:43.170 --> 00:39:45.210
  • And Jesus shapes us along the original lines
  • 00:39:45.220 --> 00:39:49.190
  • of who we were made to be.
  • 00:39:49.200 --> 00:39:52.200
  • Now, before I close, I don't want to leave you
  • 00:39:52.210 --> 00:39:54.180
  • with the wrong impression.
  • 00:39:54.190 --> 00:39:56.000
  • I don't want to leave you with the idea that once we're through
  • 00:39:56.010 --> 00:39:58.010
  • with this series, everybody's gonna have one single vision
  • 00:39:58.020 --> 00:39:59.290
  • of Jesus because I think that looking at Jesus is like
  • 00:40:00.000 --> 00:40:04.290
  • looking at a diamond.
  • 00:40:05.000 --> 00:40:06.120
  • Imagine, well, that's a really big diamond.
  • 00:40:06.130 --> 00:40:07.220
  • How many of you would like that on your finger?
  • 00:40:07.230 --> 00:40:10.040
  • Looking at a diamond, imagine a diamond,
  • 00:40:10.050 --> 00:40:13.220
  • you hold it up in the sunlight, the light refracts off of it,
  • 00:40:13.230 --> 00:40:17.000
  • the beauty of it, you see at different angles,
  • 00:40:17.010 --> 00:40:18.280
  • the reflection, refraction, the light, color,
  • 00:40:18.290 --> 00:40:22.020
  • all of that, that's Jesus.
  • 00:40:22.030 --> 00:40:25.040
  • That's the amazing beauty of Jesus is that when we look at
  • 00:40:25.050 --> 00:40:28.050
  • him, depending on where you are, you're gonna see who he is
  • 00:40:28.060 --> 00:40:32.290
  • and maybe that appears a little differently to you than I see.
  • 00:40:33.000 --> 00:40:36.090
  • Now, it's gonna be consistent with who he is but it's always
  • 00:40:36.100 --> 00:40:39.010
  • based on perspective.
  • 00:40:39.020 --> 00:40:40.250
  • Imagine those in the gospels because we know when Jesus
  • 00:40:40.260 --> 00:40:43.030
  • dealt with his issue that by now, his fame has gone out and
  • 00:40:43.040 --> 00:40:47.100
  • there are people in the gospels who were not followers of Jesus
  • 00:40:47.110 --> 00:40:50.170
  • but they co-opted Jesus for their own purposes.
  • 00:40:50.180 --> 00:40:53.190
  • In fact, on one occasion, there was a whole group of people
  • 00:40:53.200 --> 00:40:56.210
  • using the name of Jesus to do what they thought should be done
  • 00:40:56.220 --> 00:41:01.010
  • and the disciples discovered it and the disciples said,
  • 00:41:01.020 --> 00:41:03.220
  • "Can we go stop them?"
  • 00:41:03.230 --> 00:41:06.180
  • And Jesus said, "It's okay.
  • 00:41:06.190 --> 00:41:08.230
  • It's not harmful so you don't need to stop it.
  • 00:41:08.240 --> 00:41:11.020
  • People are talking about me. Let the conversation play out.
  • 00:41:11.030 --> 00:41:14.170
  • Let the world talk about me because when the conversation
  • 00:41:14.180 --> 00:41:17.050
  • is present, opportunities are there for you to tell
  • 00:41:17.060 --> 00:41:20.160
  • them who I really am."
  • 00:41:20.170 --> 00:41:22.210
  • His fame had already gone out by then.
  • 00:41:22.220 --> 00:41:25.000
  • There were people who knew about him and had a perception
  • 00:41:25.010 --> 00:41:28.110
  • about him for afar.
  • 00:41:28.120 --> 00:41:29.250
  • Imagine on the day when Jesus broke the bread and fed the
  • 00:41:29.260 --> 00:41:32.290
  • 5.000, imagine that you were one out on the fringe of the crowd.
  • 00:41:33.000 --> 00:41:39.150
  • Jesus would look one way to you across the heads of 5.000 men.
  • 00:41:39.160 --> 00:41:44.260
  • Imagine you were in the middle of the crowd.
  • 00:41:44.270 --> 00:41:46.240
  • He might look different.
  • 00:41:46.250 --> 00:41:48.150
  • Imagine you were one of the twelve,
  • 00:41:48.160 --> 00:41:50.150
  • you would see him more fully.
  • 00:41:50.160 --> 00:41:52.290
  • Imagine you were one of the three,
  • 00:41:53.000 --> 00:41:55.050
  • you would know him deeply and profoundly.
  • 00:41:55.060 --> 00:41:58.070
  • It all depends on your perspective.
  • 00:41:58.080 --> 00:42:01.020
  • Now, Jesus is who he is but depending on where you're seated
  • 00:42:01.030 --> 00:42:05.150
  • and more importantly, depending on your proximity,
  • 00:42:05.160 --> 00:42:08.050
  • which is why over the next 40 days,
  • 00:42:08.060 --> 00:42:09.270
  • I want to invite you deeper, I want you to invite you
  • 00:42:09.280 --> 00:42:12.020
  • to lean in.
  • 00:42:12.030 --> 00:42:13.120
  • I want to invite you to pursue Jesus.
  • 00:42:13.130 --> 00:42:14.260
  • I want to invite you to move from the fringe to the core
  • 00:42:14.270 --> 00:42:17.290
  • because there at the core, you're gonna see him,
  • 00:42:18.000 --> 00:42:20.110
  • not just over the heads of other people and not just based on the
  • 00:42:20.120 --> 00:42:23.250
  • eyewitness accounts of others but you're gonna see him eye
  • 00:42:23.260 --> 00:42:26.120
  • to eye, nose to nose, heart to heart and you're gonna have
  • 00:42:26.130 --> 00:42:29.170
  • a personal revelation of him.
  • 00:42:29.180 --> 00:42:32.230
  • Terry: And if you only focus on Jesus as King,
  • 00:42:34.000 --> 00:42:36.030
  • you end up with a limited viewpoint of him and if you take
  • 00:42:36.040 --> 00:42:38.280
  • that sometimes that can reduce him down to just one who is
  • 00:42:38.290 --> 00:42:44.000
  • political and parochial, meaning he governs
  • 00:42:44.010 --> 00:42:47.130
  • and here from Matthew, he governs in Israel.
  • 00:42:47.140 --> 00:42:49.280
  • And while that he was that and he is that,
  • 00:42:49.290 --> 00:42:52.270
  • he is also the Savior of humanity.
  • 00:42:52.280 --> 00:42:55.270
  • He is also the Lord of the earth.
  • 00:42:55.280 --> 00:42:58.130
  • He is also the one who is all things to all people
  • 00:42:58.140 --> 00:43:02.100
  • at all times.
  • 00:43:02.110 --> 00:43:03.260
  • They all knew Jesus but they all had a unique revelation of him.
  • 00:43:11.180 --> 00:43:17.260
  • The revelation wasn't inconsistent with the others.
  • 00:43:17.270 --> 00:43:20.070
  • It was just a unique revelation of him.
  • 00:43:20.080 --> 00:43:22.190
  • For example, for Matthew, Jesus was the King.
  • 00:43:22.200 --> 00:43:27.180
  • He knew Jesus to be Savior, Redeemer,
  • 00:43:27.190 --> 00:43:30.020
  • Lord, Healer, miracle worker but what stuck out to him above all
  • 00:43:30.030 --> 00:43:33.210
  • was that Jesus was King.
  • 00:43:33.220 --> 00:43:36.240
  • That's why in Matthew 2:1, he starts writing about Jesus
  • 00:43:36.250 --> 00:43:39.130
  • and he identifies that those who had come from afar asked
  • 00:43:39.140 --> 00:43:43.050
  • the question, "Where is he who was born King of the Jews?
  • 00:43:43.060 --> 00:43:48.100
  • Matthew was a Jew writing to Jews and it was clear that he
  • 00:43:48.110 --> 00:43:52.030
  • wanted them to know Jesus was the King who had come
  • 00:43:52.040 --> 00:43:55.150
  • to sit upon David's throne.
  • 00:43:55.160 --> 00:43:59.250
  • That's a beautiful snapshot of Jesus but it's not
  • 00:43:59.260 --> 00:44:03.010
  • all that he is.
  • 00:44:03.020 --> 00:44:05.070
  • And if you only focus on Jesus as King,
  • 00:44:05.080 --> 00:44:07.150
  • you end up with a limited viewpoint of him.
  • 00:44:07.160 --> 00:44:09.280
  • And if you take that sometimes, that can reduce him down
  • 00:44:09.290 --> 00:44:13.050
  • to just one who is political and parochial,
  • 00:44:13.060 --> 00:44:17.200
  • meaning he governs and here from Matthew,
  • 00:44:17.210 --> 00:44:20.010
  • he governs in Israel.
  • 00:44:20.020 --> 00:44:21.160
  • And while that he was that and he is that,
  • 00:44:21.170 --> 00:44:24.130
  • he is also the Savior of humanity.
  • 00:44:24.140 --> 00:44:27.080
  • He is also the Lord of the earth.
  • 00:44:27.090 --> 00:44:29.230
  • He is also the one who is all things to all people at
  • 00:44:29.240 --> 00:44:33.180
  • all times and yet for Matthew, Jesus was King above all.
  • 00:44:33.190 --> 00:44:39.250
  • When we turn to Mark's gospel, we find that Jesus is servant.
  • 00:44:39.260 --> 00:44:44.190
  • Mark knows that he is King, but he also knows he's the servant
  • 00:44:44.200 --> 00:44:50.000
  • and he wants to emphasize that to us.
  • 00:44:50.010 --> 00:44:52.180
  • That's why he says in Mark chapter 10 and verse 45,
  • 00:44:52.190 --> 00:44:56.090
  • "For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve,
  • 00:44:56.100 --> 00:44:58.290
  • and to give his life as a ransom for many."
  • 00:44:59.000 --> 00:45:02.260
  • He wants us to know as you're thinking of Jesus as King,
  • 00:45:02.270 --> 00:45:05.060
  • remember, he's a different kind of King.
  • 00:45:05.070 --> 00:45:07.270
  • He's a servant King.
  • 00:45:07.280 --> 00:45:09.270
  • And when you see him as one who rules and reigns,
  • 00:45:09.280 --> 00:45:12.060
  • let's also broaden that out by knowing that he rules
  • 00:45:12.070 --> 00:45:15.220
  • and reigns, not by domineering, not by dominating,
  • 00:45:15.230 --> 00:45:19.050
  • but he rules and reigns by serving and uplifting.
  • 00:45:19.060 --> 00:45:21.200
  • And if you see him that way, then you become one
  • 00:45:21.210 --> 00:45:23.290
  • who serves your family, who serves your church,
  • 00:45:24.000 --> 00:45:27.070
  • who serves your community, who serves society,
  • 00:45:27.080 --> 00:45:30.000
  • who serves a broken world.
  • 00:45:30.010 --> 00:45:31.180
  • And you realize that the kingdom of God is an upside down kingdom
  • 00:45:31.190 --> 00:45:34.250
  • where those who give their lives away find it and those who
  • 00:45:34.260 --> 00:45:37.180
  • lay down their lives are given their lives back in exchange.
  • 00:45:37.190 --> 00:45:41.080
  • He is King but also servant.
  • 00:45:41.090 --> 00:45:45.130
  • Then Luke comes along and Luke says,
  • 00:45:45.140 --> 00:45:47.150
  • "That's really good.
  • 00:45:47.160 --> 00:45:49.000
  • He's King and he's servant, but I want you to know my revelation
  • 00:45:49.010 --> 00:45:52.230
  • of Jesus is that he is the perfect man."
  • 00:45:52.240 --> 00:45:56.210
  • Luke was a physician, he's a doctor.
  • 00:45:56.220 --> 00:46:00.050
  • He's looking at Jesus wondering, do you need a checkup?
  • 00:46:00.060 --> 00:46:03.080
  • He's looking at Jesus realizing that he's the perfect example
  • 00:46:03.090 --> 00:46:07.200
  • of humanity.
  • 00:46:07.210 --> 00:46:09.120
  • He is the perfect expression of what God intended for all people
  • 00:46:09.130 --> 00:46:13.270
  • and our lives should be shaped along the lines of his life.
  • 00:46:13.280 --> 00:46:17.270
  • And so, Luke comes along and wants us to know as he writes
  • 00:46:17.280 --> 00:46:20.240
  • in Luke chapter 3 and verse 23 right on down through 28,
  • 00:46:20.250 --> 00:46:24.070
  • "He is the Son of Joseph, the Son of Adam,
  • 00:46:24.080 --> 00:46:27.280
  • the Son of Man," and over and over he emphasizes his humanity.
  • 00:46:27.290 --> 00:46:32.050
  • He knows he's God, but he also wants us to know he's a man.
  • 00:46:32.060 --> 00:46:37.150
  • And then finally, John comes along and John says,
  • 00:46:37.160 --> 00:46:41.090
  • "Like what your brothers are saying.
  • 00:46:41.100 --> 00:46:43.170
  • Jesus is King.
  • 00:46:43.180 --> 00:46:45.140
  • Jesus is servant.
  • 00:46:45.150 --> 00:46:47.050
  • Jesus is the perfect man.
  • 00:46:47.060 --> 00:46:50.160
  • I believe all that but I also know he's the beloved
  • 00:46:50.170 --> 00:46:53.230
  • Son of God."
  • 00:46:53.240 --> 00:46:56.190
  • And so, he emphasizes throughout his writings,
  • 00:46:56.200 --> 00:46:58.240
  • the tenderness of Jesus, the fact that he can lay his head on
  • 00:46:58.250 --> 00:47:03.080
  • the shoulder of Jesus and that Jesus made room for him in close
  • 00:47:03.090 --> 00:47:07.090
  • proximity and relationship.
  • 00:47:07.100 --> 00:47:09.100
  • He doesn't just see Jesus as one who is perfect,
  • 00:47:09.110 --> 00:47:12.220
  • one who is serving, one who is Lord,
  • 00:47:12.230 --> 00:47:14.140
  • but he sees Jesus as this individual who is God
  • 00:47:14.150 --> 00:47:17.290
  • drawing close to us.
  • 00:47:18.000 --> 00:47:21.100
  • So, now you can see what I mean by that Jesus was multifaceted.
  • 00:47:21.110 --> 00:47:25.150
  • The question is, how do you see him?
  • 00:47:25.160 --> 00:47:27.230
  • I hope that as you see him for who he is,
  • 00:47:27.240 --> 00:47:31.140
  • historically who he is personally and who he is to you
  • 00:47:31.150 --> 00:47:36.020
  • in this moment in light of what he has come to do for you.
  • 00:47:36.030 --> 00:47:42.070
  • This Jesus is more than enough for whatever this world needs.
  • 00:47:42.080 --> 00:47:48.150
  • I want to close by reading a prayer.
  • 00:47:48.160 --> 00:47:50.220
  • We don't often read prayers.
  • 00:47:50.230 --> 00:47:52.180
  • We, as you know, we just pray for the heart--from the heart
  • 00:47:52.190 --> 00:47:56.040
  • and we throw in lots of "Father Gods"
  • 00:47:56.050 --> 00:47:58.050
  • 'cause that's just what we do.
  • 00:47:58.060 --> 00:48:02.040
  • It's just how we pray.
  • 00:48:02.050 --> 00:48:03.210
  • So, we don't often read prayers but I want to read a prayer
  • 00:48:03.220 --> 00:48:05.280
  • and you're gonna immediately, some of you,
  • 00:48:05.290 --> 00:48:07.170
  • especially those of you who are probably in a certain age group,
  • 00:48:07.180 --> 00:48:10.220
  • and I'm not even sure what they age group is,
  • 00:48:10.230 --> 00:48:12.170
  • but you're gonna recognize this real quickly here.
  • 00:48:12.180 --> 00:48:14.170
  • It is a prayer that was actually written and prayed 700 years ago
  • 00:48:14.180 --> 00:48:18.050
  • by a man living in a small village in England who prayed
  • 00:48:18.060 --> 00:48:21.030
  • this simple and heartfelt prayer that really frames
  • 00:48:21.040 --> 00:48:23.140
  • my hope for the series.
  • 00:48:23.150 --> 00:48:25.080
  • Here's the prayer, he said, "Thanks be to thee,
  • 00:48:25.090 --> 00:48:28.150
  • my Lord Jesus Christ, For all the benefits thou hast given me,
  • 00:48:28.160 --> 00:48:32.120
  • For all the pains and insults thou hast borne for me.
  • 00:48:32.130 --> 00:48:35.200
  • O most merciful Redeemer, Friend, and Brother,"
  • 00:48:35.210 --> 00:48:39.080
  • and the here's the part you know.
  • 00:48:39.090 --> 00:48:40.180
  • "May I know thee more clearly, May I love thee more dearly,
  • 00:48:40.190 --> 00:48:45.100
  • Follow thee more nearly, day by day by day."
  • 00:48:45.110 --> 00:48:51.110
  • In spite of the fact that Ben Stiller forever changed
  • 00:48:52.030 --> 00:48:54.240
  • that prayer for many of us, I think it captures the essence
  • 00:48:54.250 --> 00:48:57.060
  • of this journey we begin today.
  • 00:48:57.070 --> 00:48:59.010
  • And it is my prayer that we would see Jesus more clearly,
  • 00:48:59.020 --> 00:49:02.100
  • that we'd love him more dearly, and that we would follow him
  • 00:49:02.110 --> 00:49:05.020
  • more nearly day by day by day.
  • 00:49:05.030 --> 00:49:09.180
  • Brian: Well, I'm glad you've joined us on
  • 00:49:11.260 --> 00:49:13.100
  • the Hillsong Channel, and I want to ask you a question,
  • 00:49:13.110 --> 00:49:16.080
  • a personal question, have you ever made a conscious decision
  • 00:49:16.090 --> 00:49:19.100
  • to surrender ownership of your life to the Lord Jesus Christ?
  • 00:49:19.110 --> 00:49:23.180
  • Have you ever encountered him in a personal way?
  • 00:49:23.190 --> 00:49:26.060
  • By that, I don't mean that you necessarily saw him,
  • 00:49:26.070 --> 00:49:28.290
  • but you know that you know that there was a day
  • 00:49:29.000 --> 00:49:31.100
  • when something changed, when something happened.
  • 00:49:31.110 --> 00:49:33.250
  • Jesus came into your life.
  • 00:49:33.260 --> 00:49:35.280
  • See, the Bible says if you ask him into your life,
  • 00:49:35.290 --> 00:49:38.010
  • he will come in and he will live in you.
  • 00:49:38.020 --> 00:49:43.270
  • What a beautiful promise.
  • 00:49:43.280 --> 00:49:45.240
  • Maybe at some point you prayed a prayer like that but somewhere
  • 00:49:45.250 --> 00:49:48.080
  • along the way, you lost your way.
  • 00:49:48.090 --> 00:49:50.200
  • Well, it's not as though God moves.
  • 00:49:50.210 --> 00:49:52.160
  • He said, "I'll never leave you nor forsake you."
  • 00:49:52.170 --> 00:49:54.160
  • I love the fact that he saves us but the Bible never says
  • 00:49:54.170 --> 00:49:57.080
  • he unsaves us.
  • 00:49:57.090 --> 00:49:58.280
  • But we all make our own choices and we can make choices
  • 00:49:58.290 --> 00:50:01.180
  • that have us living dislocated or alienated from the center
  • 00:50:01.190 --> 00:50:04.260
  • of God's will.
  • 00:50:04.270 --> 00:50:06.210
  • I couldn't think of a more perfect time to come back
  • 00:50:06.220 --> 00:50:08.290
  • and say, "Jesus, I need you in my life.
  • 00:50:09.000 --> 00:50:11.170
  • I'm coming back to living out of an ongoing relationship
  • 00:50:11.180 --> 00:50:14.190
  • with you."
  • 00:50:14.200 --> 00:50:16.040
  • So, I'm gonna lead you in a prayer.
  • 00:50:16.050 --> 00:50:17.210
  • This is a prayer of salvation.
  • 00:50:17.220 --> 00:50:19.150
  • If you'll pray this prayer along with me to
  • 00:50:19.160 --> 00:50:21.100
  • the Lord Jesus Christ, I believe this can be your day,
  • 00:50:21.110 --> 00:50:24.220
  • this can be the beginning of a brand-new chapter in your life
  • 00:50:24.230 --> 00:50:28.080
  • with Jesus as your Lord and your Savior.
  • 00:50:28.090 --> 00:50:30.290
  • So, you ready for that, ready to join me in prayer?
  • 00:50:31.000 --> 00:50:34.050
  • Here we go, "Dear Jesus, I recognize my need of you.
  • 00:50:34.060 --> 00:50:39.270
  • I thank you that you can bring salvation to my life.
  • 00:50:39.280 --> 00:50:43.210
  • You can forgive me of my past failures and mistakes and give
  • 00:50:43.220 --> 00:50:46.230
  • me a brand-new beginning and a brand-new start.
  • 00:50:46.240 --> 00:50:50.000
  • So, at this moment, I say Jesus, come into my life.
  • 00:50:50.010 --> 00:50:53.220
  • I recognize because of you, from this time I'm a child of God,
  • 00:50:53.230 --> 00:50:58.120
  • a new creation, a follower of Jesus Christ.
  • 00:50:58.130 --> 00:51:02.070
  • My sins are forgiven. It's a brand-new day.
  • 00:51:02.080 --> 00:51:05.220
  • Thank you for your love and grace.
  • 00:51:05.230 --> 00:51:07.200
  • Thank you or your forgiveness and mercy.
  • 00:51:07.210 --> 00:51:10.030
  • I am a believer. Jesus is alive in me, amen."
  • 00:51:10.040 --> 00:51:16.090
  • Now, if you just prayed that prayer from your heart,
  • 00:51:16.100 --> 00:51:18.230
  • then could I encourage you to do whatever you can to get a Bible,
  • 00:51:18.240 --> 00:51:22.140
  • get along to a great life-giving local church where Jesus
  • 00:51:22.150 --> 00:51:25.270
  • is proclaimed?
  • 00:51:25.280 --> 00:51:27.270
  • And most of all, if you can connect with other believers,
  • 00:51:27.280 --> 00:51:31.000
  • it's just gonna make that walk so much easier.
  • 00:51:31.010 --> 00:51:33.180
  • God bless you.
  • 00:51:33.190 --> 00:51:35.040
