  • Brian Houston: Well, hi there.
  • 00:00:01.080 --> 00:00:02.130
  • We're Brian and Bobbie Houston, and we're the senior pastors
  • 00:00:02.140 --> 00:00:03.090
  • of Hillsong Church.
  • 00:00:03.100 --> 00:00:04.190
  • As a matter of fact, we have been for 33 years now.
  • 00:00:04.200 --> 00:00:07.040
  • And today we're blessed 'cause our church is around the globe
  • 00:00:07.050 --> 00:00:10.120
  • in many wonderful, great cities.
  • 00:00:10.130 --> 00:00:12.240
  • To build the church with other people is a huge blessing,
  • 00:00:12.250 --> 00:00:15.120
  • and I'm so proud of all our lead pastors.
  • 00:00:15.130 --> 00:00:18.120
  • The way they preach and teach and lead is so exciting.
  • 00:00:18.130 --> 00:00:22.180
  • Most of them are a little younger than Bobbie and I,
  • 00:00:22.190 --> 00:00:24.130
  • which is great, but they have so much power and potential.
  • 00:00:24.140 --> 00:00:27.270
  • So, right now, you're gonna hear from one of our lead pastors or
  • 00:00:27.280 --> 00:00:32.000
  • someone else in our team speaking from Hillsong Church.
  • 00:00:32.010 --> 00:00:36.140
  • And I believe this message can bless you, can build you,
  • 00:00:36.150 --> 00:00:39.190
  • can strengthen you.
  • 00:00:39.200 --> 00:00:41.050
  • So tune in. Don't get distracted.
  • 00:00:41.060 --> 00:00:43.120
  • God wants to do something good in your life right now.
  • 00:00:43.130 --> 00:00:47.000
  • 00:00:47.010 --> 00:00:54.000

  • Terry Crist: Hello, and welcome
  • 00:01:03.250 --> 00:01:05.040
  • to Hillsong Church Phoenix.
  • 00:01:05.050 --> 00:01:06.180
  • We meet all across the Phoenix Valley,
  • 00:01:06.190 --> 00:01:08.210
  • from the beautiful suburbs to the working-class neighborhoods
  • 00:01:08.220 --> 00:01:12.140
  • to the downtown urban core.
  • 00:01:12.150 --> 00:01:14.230
  • We love this city, from its rugged beauty
  • 00:01:14.240 --> 00:01:17.290
  • to its youthful energy to its multicultural diversity.
  • 00:01:18.000 --> 00:01:21.290
  • All of those things are a picture of what makes
  • 00:01:22.000 --> 00:01:24.090
  • this community so great.
  • 00:01:24.100 --> 00:01:26.110
  • But most of all, we love the people who live here,
  • 00:01:26.120 --> 00:01:29.150
  • and our heart is to see their lives transformed with the love
  • 00:01:29.160 --> 00:01:33.040
  • and grace of Jesus.
  • 00:01:33.050 --> 00:01:36.060
  • I'm Terry Crist, and along with my wife, Judith,
  • 00:01:36.070 --> 00:01:38.240
  • we're the lead pastors of Hillsong Church Phoenix.
  • 00:01:38.250 --> 00:01:42.010
  • I'm so glad that you've taken time to join us right here on
  • 00:01:42.020 --> 00:01:44.180
  • the Hillsong Channel for one of our weekend worship services.
  • 00:01:44.190 --> 00:01:48.200
  • Today you're going to be blessed by hearing Pastor Thomas Hansen.
  • 00:01:48.210 --> 00:01:52.220
  • Thomas is the lead pastor of Hillsong Church Copenhagen,
  • 00:01:52.230 --> 00:01:55.280
  • and I know his message will be an encouragement to you.
  • 00:01:55.290 --> 00:02:00.030
  • Thomas Hansen: When you come to church,
  • 00:02:00.040 --> 00:02:01.190
  • not coming to church with a sense of,
  • 00:02:01.200 --> 00:02:03.020
  • "Well, here we go again," no, coming in with
  • 00:02:03.030 --> 00:02:05.110
  • a sense of expectation, going, "I know he's here somewhere."
  • 00:02:05.120 --> 00:02:09.170
  • Worship starts, "I wonder if he's in worship."
  • 00:02:09.180 --> 00:02:12.140
  • "I wonder if he's there."
  • 00:02:12.150 --> 00:02:14.060
  • "I wonder if he's in the Word," when you have
  • 00:02:14.070 --> 00:02:15.290
  • your personal devotional.
  • 00:02:16.000 --> 00:02:17.190
  • You see, what's great about God is that where you found him
  • 00:02:17.200 --> 00:02:20.120
  • yesterday might not be where you find him today
  • 00:02:20.130 --> 00:02:22.200
  • 'cause he's a living God.
  • 00:02:22.210 --> 00:02:24.030
  • He's a moving God.
  • 00:02:24.040 --> 00:02:26.090
  • You've gotta go looking for him every single day.
  • 00:02:26.100 --> 00:02:29.080
  • Thomas: I wanna speak this morning on the subject
  • 00:02:31.200 --> 00:02:33.210
  • of "Hide and Seek."
  • 00:02:33.220 --> 00:02:36.090
  • "Hide and Seek."
  • 00:02:36.100 --> 00:02:37.190
  • Have you ever played hide and seek?
  • 00:02:37.200 --> 00:02:39.090
  • Do you like a game of hide and seek?
  • 00:02:39.100 --> 00:02:41.210
  • I don't know about you, but have you ever asked yourself
  • 00:02:41.220 --> 00:02:43.260
  • the question, "Where is God?"
  • 00:02:43.270 --> 00:02:48.040
  • Can we be honest this morning?
  • 00:02:48.050 --> 00:02:50.000
  • Have you ever asked yourself the question, "Where is God?"
  • 00:02:50.010 --> 00:02:54.270
  • You know, as a follower of Jesus, one of our primary
  • 00:02:54.280 --> 00:02:58.000
  • responsibilities is to introduce people to the person
  • 00:02:58.010 --> 00:03:01.220
  • of Jesus Christ.
  • 00:03:01.230 --> 00:03:03.200
  • But often, the question that will be asked of me and of us,
  • 00:03:03.210 --> 00:03:07.250
  • whether it's from our friends or family or--you know,
  • 00:03:07.260 --> 00:03:10.170
  • my wife and I, we have three children, three daughters.
  • 00:03:10.180 --> 00:03:14.160
  • That's called "a hat trick," ladies and gentlemen.
  • 00:03:14.170 --> 00:03:17.040
  • They are 2, 6, and 7 years old, and one of the questions
  • 00:03:17.050 --> 00:03:21.140
  • that they will have is, "Well, where is he?
  • 00:03:21.150 --> 00:03:24.200
  • If God is real, why doesn't he just show himself?"
  • 00:03:24.210 --> 00:03:28.170
  • You know when your kids, they ask you a question
  • 00:03:28.180 --> 00:03:30.180
  • and it's like, it's legitimate, and you're like, "It makes sense
  • 00:03:30.190 --> 00:03:33.170
  • as well," but you don't know how to answer it?
  • 00:03:33.180 --> 00:03:35.180
  • You're like, you know, "Just be quiet
  • 00:03:35.190 --> 00:03:37.160
  • and trust Jesus," you know?
  • 00:03:37.170 --> 00:03:40.220
  • But I don't know about you, but so often, we can have this rosy
  • 00:03:40.230 --> 00:03:43.180
  • picture of our relationship with Jesus, where it's like,
  • 00:03:43.190 --> 00:03:46.120
  • "Well, we're just skipping through life."
  • 00:03:46.130 --> 00:03:48.130
  • And you know, when we need a Scripture, we just grab our
  • 00:03:48.140 --> 00:03:50.150
  • Bible and do a flick and pick, and we find something that
  • 00:03:50.160 --> 00:03:52.190
  • applies to us, and that's sort of, you know how we walk out
  • 00:03:52.200 --> 00:03:56.080
  • our relationship with Jesus.
  • 00:03:56.090 --> 00:03:57.250
  • I don't know if it's like that for you,
  • 00:03:57.260 --> 00:03:59.160
  • but it's definitely not like that for me.
  • 00:03:59.170 --> 00:04:01.270
  • When I read my Bible, or rather, when the Bible reads me, for me,
  • 00:04:01.280 --> 00:04:06.070
  • it is more like a wrestle.
  • 00:04:06.080 --> 00:04:08.090
  • Some call it a devotion.
  • 00:04:08.100 --> 00:04:09.260
  • For me, it's not a devotion, it's a wrestle.
  • 00:04:09.270 --> 00:04:12.160
  • As I'm sitting here and I'm diving into what God speaks
  • 00:04:12.170 --> 00:04:17.010
  • to me--'cause don't you love that we serve a speaking God,
  • 00:04:17.020 --> 00:04:20.200
  • that he is still speaking to us today?
  • 00:04:20.210 --> 00:04:23.010
  • And as I'm diving into his Word, there is a wrestle going on,
  • 00:04:23.020 --> 00:04:26.230
  • a wrestle between the spirit and the flesh, a wrestle
  • 00:04:26.240 --> 00:04:30.030
  • between the truth of the Bible and the realities of my life.
  • 00:04:30.040 --> 00:04:35.200
  • And so I'm reading in the Scripture of the ever-present,
  • 00:04:35.210 --> 00:04:39.170
  • and he's always there, and he is the Jehovah-shammah,
  • 00:04:39.180 --> 00:04:43.040
  • that is there in every situation.
  • 00:04:43.050 --> 00:04:46.050
  • And then I look at my realities, and I'm like,
  • 00:04:46.060 --> 00:04:49.140
  • "Sometimes I just find God very frustrating."
  • 00:04:49.150 --> 00:04:53.200
  • Can we be honest?
  • 00:04:53.210 --> 00:04:55.230
  • It seems sometimes that it's like when I need him the most,
  • 00:04:55.240 --> 00:05:00.150
  • he's nowhere to be found, and when I don't need him,
  • 00:05:00.160 --> 00:05:03.160
  • he's always there.
  • 00:05:03.170 --> 00:05:05.220
  • And I'm like, "God, where are you?
  • 00:05:05.230 --> 00:05:07.150
  • Where were you in this situation?
  • 00:05:07.160 --> 00:05:09.090
  • God, where were you in my friend's situation?
  • 00:05:09.100 --> 00:05:12.010
  • God, where are you?"
  • 00:05:12.020 --> 00:05:15.240
  • You know, we read in the Gospels about Jesus.
  • 00:05:15.250 --> 00:05:18.170
  • He looks at his disciples.
  • 00:05:18.180 --> 00:05:20.090
  • He looks at them, he loves them, and he tells them
  • 00:05:20.100 --> 00:05:22.250
  • what they need to know.
  • 00:05:22.260 --> 00:05:24.150
  • And he says, "I will never leave you.
  • 00:05:24.160 --> 00:05:26.000
  • I will never forsake you."
  • 00:05:26.010 --> 00:05:27.100
  • It was a moment, and the very next moment, pew, he's off,
  • 00:05:27.110 --> 00:05:30.160
  • riding the clouds of glory.
  • 00:05:30.170 --> 00:05:31.280
  • And you're like, "What happened?"
  • 00:05:31.290 --> 00:05:33.170
  • You know, Jesus, he's standing with his disciples,
  • 00:05:33.180 --> 00:05:35.030
  • and he says, "Come, follow me."
  • 00:05:35.040 --> 00:05:36.270
  • And they're like, "Great," and a few days later, he goes,
  • 00:05:36.280 --> 00:05:38.240
  • "Where I go you cannot follow."
  • 00:05:38.250 --> 00:05:43.210
  • Well, you know, which one is it?
  • 00:05:43.220 --> 00:05:46.130
  • You know, God, you're hiding, we wanna find you,
  • 00:05:46.140 --> 00:05:48.250
  • so which one is it?
  • 00:05:48.260 --> 00:05:51.000
  • You know, as humans, we so often, we think in extremes.
  • 00:05:51.010 --> 00:05:55.080
  • And we decide sometimes to live in the extreme, and that's why
  • 00:05:55.090 --> 00:05:59.060
  • we often see these movements where you're in this one
  • 00:05:59.070 --> 00:06:02.000
  • extreme, and then we all believe this, and then suddenly,
  • 00:06:02.010 --> 00:06:04.000
  • the pendulum swings the other--this is a big stage.
  • 00:06:04.010 --> 00:06:06.050
  • This is gonna get hot today.
  • 00:06:06.060 --> 00:06:08.130
  • Then we swing to the other side and, you know,
  • 00:06:08.140 --> 00:06:11.100
  • then we now live in this extreme.
  • 00:06:11.110 --> 00:06:13.110
  • But the fact is this, that extremes are great tools
  • 00:06:13.120 --> 00:06:17.120
  • for explanation, but you can't live there.
  • 00:06:17.130 --> 00:06:21.050
  • You know, truth is found somewhere in the middle.
  • 00:06:21.060 --> 00:06:25.200
  • You know, we want it to be either hot or cold,
  • 00:06:25.210 --> 00:06:28.070
  • black or white, on or off, this way or that way,
  • 00:06:28.080 --> 00:06:31.210
  • and we don't like it when it's both/and.
  • 00:06:31.220 --> 00:06:35.250
  • You know, I think one of the greatest examples of this is
  • 00:06:35.260 --> 00:06:38.040
  • found in the book of Proverbs.
  • 00:06:38.050 --> 00:06:40.000
  • In Proverbs 23, we hear about how that the author, he's out
  • 00:06:40.010 --> 00:06:43.140
  • walking and he finds some honey, and he finds some honey,
  • 00:06:43.150 --> 00:06:48.090
  • he tastes it, and he's like, "This is great."
  • 00:06:48.100 --> 00:06:50.230
  • And you know, you can picture what's going on behind the
  • 00:06:50.240 --> 00:06:53.110
  • scenes because he has obviously picked a whole, you know,
  • 00:06:53.120 --> 00:06:56.260
  • armful of honey, and he's carrying this honey, eating it,
  • 00:06:56.270 --> 00:07:00.080
  • and he tells his scribe, "Write this one down:
  • 00:07:00.090 --> 00:07:03.010
  • 'If you find honey, eat it, it's good for you.'"
  • 00:07:03.020 --> 00:07:07.230
  • Now, you know what is going on because there's a whole bunch of
  • 00:07:07.240 --> 00:07:10.190
  • proverbs that's being spat out between, you know,
  • 00:07:10.200 --> 00:07:13.200
  • the next few verses.
  • 00:07:13.210 --> 00:07:15.000
  • But then we get to Proverbs 24, and then he goes:
  • 00:07:15.010 --> 00:07:18.230
  • "Write this one down: 'If you find honey, don't eat too much,
  • 00:07:18.240 --> 00:07:22.020
  • because it's gonna cause you to vomit.'"
  • 00:07:22.030 --> 00:07:24.270
  • That's the problem with the extremes, is that we hold this
  • 00:07:24.280 --> 00:07:30.250
  • viewpoint until we get to that viewpoint, and suddenly,
  • 00:07:30.260 --> 00:07:33.280
  • we realize, "Well, is honey bad for you?"
  • 00:07:33.290 --> 00:07:35.250
  • No, it's good for you, just not too much of it.
  • 00:07:35.260 --> 00:07:39.080
  • It's somewhere in the middle ground.
  • 00:07:39.090 --> 00:07:42.110
  • It's somewhere in between.
  • 00:07:42.120 --> 00:07:44.140
  • God, is he hiding, or can we find him?
  • 00:07:44.150 --> 00:07:49.050
  • Well, maybe he's somewhere in the middle ground.
  • 00:07:49.060 --> 00:07:53.060
  • The famous atheist Bertrand Russell,
  • 00:07:53.070 --> 00:07:55.040
  • he said it like this.
  • 00:07:55.050 --> 00:07:56.280
  • He goes, "When I die, if I'm faced with God,"
  • 00:07:56.290 --> 00:08:01.090
  • which, you know, for an atheist to say that doesn't make sense,
  • 00:08:01.100 --> 00:08:04.090
  • but whatever.
  • 00:08:04.100 --> 00:08:06.170
  • He said, "If I'm faced with God when I die, I'm gonna demand
  • 00:08:06.180 --> 00:08:10.150
  • an explanation for why God made the evidence
  • 00:08:10.160 --> 00:08:13.200
  • of his existence so insufficient."
  • 00:08:13.210 --> 00:08:17.260
  • You see, to the atheist, a hidden God just proves to them
  • 00:08:17.270 --> 00:08:20.270
  • that God doesn't exist.
  • 00:08:20.280 --> 00:08:22.160
  • To the skeptic, a hidden God just produces more doubt.
  • 00:08:22.170 --> 00:08:26.110
  • And to the believer, we just say, "Well, praise God,
  • 00:08:26.120 --> 00:08:28.250
  • it's all part of God's divine plan."
  • 00:08:28.260 --> 00:08:32.090
  • So, who is correct? Who's right?
  • 00:08:32.100 --> 00:08:34.050
  • Like, what is it? Is he hidden, or isn't he?
  • 00:08:34.060 --> 00:08:38.070
  • Well, the answer really, it comes down to what type of
  • 00:08:38.080 --> 00:08:41.100
  • relationship you believe God, he desires with every one of us.
  • 00:08:41.110 --> 00:08:45.230
  • Thomas: He wants us to go on an adventure
  • 00:08:46.280 --> 00:08:49.060
  • where we go looking for him.
  • 00:08:49.070 --> 00:08:51.140
  • What if I was to tell you that you can find God every single
  • 00:08:51.150 --> 00:08:55.000
  • day of your life, that God, he is hiding in your circumstances?
  • 00:08:55.010 --> 00:08:59.180
  • He's hiding in your sphere of influence.
  • 00:08:59.190 --> 00:09:02.010
  • He's hiding in your job. He's hiding in your life.
  • 00:09:02.020 --> 00:09:05.270
  • 00:09:05.280 --> 00:09:07.280
  • decides an intellectual relationship, where we just need
  • 00:09:14.100 --> 00:09:16.260
  • to logically know that he exists, then, yes,
  • 00:09:16.270 --> 00:09:19.270
  • it's preposterous that he doesn't show himself 24/7
  • 00:09:19.280 --> 00:09:23.170
  • on every TV channel.
  • 00:09:23.180 --> 00:09:25.020
  • And all over the Internet there should just be a picture where
  • 00:09:25.030 --> 00:09:27.190
  • he just goes, "I'm here, just checking in, guys, I'm here."
  • 00:09:27.200 --> 00:09:31.180
  • If it was just an intellectual relationship he wanted,
  • 00:09:31.190 --> 00:09:35.070
  • that we just needed the knowledge that God exists,
  • 00:09:35.080 --> 00:09:38.080
  • then, yes, there should be no hiddenness.
  • 00:09:38.090 --> 00:09:40.160
  • He should just show himself.
  • 00:09:40.170 --> 00:09:42.110
  • But if God wants a more personal, intimate relationship
  • 00:09:42.120 --> 00:09:47.010
  • with every single one of us, there is a level of discovery.
  • 00:09:47.020 --> 00:09:51.240
  • There is a level of going deeper.
  • 00:09:51.250 --> 00:09:54.190
  • There is a level of revelation.
  • 00:09:54.200 --> 00:09:56.230
  • There is a level of going on an adventure
  • 00:09:56.240 --> 00:09:59.110
  • of discovering who God is.
  • 00:09:59.120 --> 00:10:03.250
  • It all comes down to what kind of relationship do we believe
  • 00:10:03.260 --> 00:10:07.250
  • that God wants for us?
  • 00:10:07.260 --> 00:10:10.090
  • You see, at the core of it is, how do you see God?
  • 00:10:10.100 --> 00:10:13.160
  • If you see God as a disinterested, distant,
  • 00:10:13.170 --> 00:10:15.250
  • and dormant God who has no desire to be found by people,
  • 00:10:15.260 --> 00:10:20.090
  • then you're not gonna go looking for him.
  • 00:10:20.100 --> 00:10:23.070
  • You know, there's no point in playing hide and seek
  • 00:10:23.080 --> 00:10:25.040
  • if there's no one to find.
  • 00:10:25.050 --> 00:10:27.090
  • You're not playing, you're just a crazy person
  • 00:10:27.100 --> 00:10:29.020
  • walking around looking places.
  • 00:10:29.030 --> 00:10:31.270
  • "I lost my marbles," you know?
  • 00:10:31.280 --> 00:10:35.290
  • Hebrews 11:6 shows us and gives us the expression of what we
  • 00:10:36.000 --> 00:10:39.290
  • find throughout the Gospels and throughout the Bible,
  • 00:10:40.000 --> 00:10:43.030
  • that God desires to be found.
  • 00:10:43.040 --> 00:10:45.250
  • Hebrews 11:6, it says: "Without faith it is impossible to please
  • 00:10:45.260 --> 00:10:50.030
  • God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists
  • 00:10:50.040 --> 00:10:55.130
  • and that he is a rewarder of those who earnestly seek him."
  • 00:10:55.140 --> 00:11:02.250
  • You see, God doesn't hide to be hidden.
  • 00:11:02.260 --> 00:11:06.030
  • God, he hides to be found.
  • 00:11:06.040 --> 00:11:09.010
  • God, he hides to be found.
  • 00:11:10.130 --> 00:11:13.080
  • Have we got any parents here this morning?
  • 00:11:13.090 --> 00:11:16.060
  • Anyone who's proud of being a parent?
  • 00:11:16.070 --> 00:11:18.020
  • Oh, a few more, great.
  • 00:11:18.030 --> 00:11:19.240
  • It's funny how that works every single time.
  • 00:11:19.250 --> 00:11:22.160
  • It's like, "Okay, great, yes, I'm a parent too.
  • 00:11:22.170 --> 00:11:25.130
  • I've made life."
  • 00:11:25.140 --> 00:11:26.230
  • You know, if you're a parent of a toddler, or if you're a good
  • 00:11:26.240 --> 00:11:29.290
  • parent of a toddler, you will know that when you play
  • 00:11:30.000 --> 00:11:32.240
  • hide and seek, the aim is not to be hidden.
  • 00:11:32.250 --> 00:11:37.050
  • I'm just breaking it down for a few people, okay?
  • 00:11:37.060 --> 00:11:40.050
  • You know, when I'm playing hide and seek with my 2 year old,
  • 00:11:40.060 --> 00:11:43.130
  • I'm not trying to win the game, okay?
  • 00:11:43.140 --> 00:11:46.140
  • It's like, I'm gonna hide, you know, where she cannot find me.
  • 00:11:46.150 --> 00:11:49.290
  • I'm gonna bolt myself in, and as she's out there screaming
  • 00:11:50.000 --> 00:11:53.270
  • because she thinks she's lost her daddy, I'm gonna be like,
  • 00:11:53.280 --> 00:11:56.260
  • you know, "I won, in your face."
  • 00:11:56.270 --> 00:12:00.040
  • No, I realize the point of the game, as a good dad,
  • 00:12:02.080 --> 00:12:07.270
  • is to hide in a place where you will be found.
  • 00:12:07.280 --> 00:12:12.200
  • So you find yourself, as a dad, you find yourself, as a grown
  • 00:12:12.210 --> 00:12:16.230
  • man, hiding in, you know, silly places.
  • 00:12:16.240 --> 00:12:20.120
  • So you hide behind a little lamp, trying to camouflage
  • 00:12:20.130 --> 00:12:27.230
  • yourself into the surrounding, and you're like,
  • 00:12:27.240 --> 00:12:30.270
  • your 2-year-old daughter is looking for you,
  • 00:12:30.280 --> 00:12:33.150
  • and you're like, and if she can't find you immediately,
  • 00:12:33.160 --> 00:12:35.150
  • you start... [clearing throat]
  • 00:12:35.160 --> 00:12:38.220
  • [whistling]
  • 00:12:38.230 --> 00:12:40.150
  • You start dropping hints to get their attention.
  • 00:12:40.160 --> 00:12:43.080
  • Why?
  • 00:12:43.090 --> 00:12:44.230
  • Because you want that moment when she turns around,
  • 00:12:44.240 --> 00:12:47.060
  • she locks eyes with you, and she goes, "There you are.
  • 00:12:47.070 --> 00:12:51.030
  • There you are, Daddy.
  • 00:12:51.040 --> 00:12:53.050
  • Silly Daddy, silly Daddy, hiding behind that silly thing.
  • 00:12:53.060 --> 00:12:58.110
  • I found you."
  • 00:12:58.120 --> 00:13:00.100
  • And you sit there as a daddy, going, "Yeah, you found me.
  • 00:13:00.110 --> 00:13:06.140
  • It's all you. You are so clever."
  • 00:13:06.150 --> 00:13:11.290
  • Isn't that what we do? We go, "I found Jesus."
  • 00:13:12.000 --> 00:13:17.160
  • And Jesus is like, "Yeah.
  • 00:13:17.170 --> 00:13:22.250
  • You found me. Well done.
  • 00:13:22.260 --> 00:13:28.030
  • You can write a date down on when you found me.
  • 00:13:28.040 --> 00:13:30.220
  • Go get your orange carp, or, you know, you do that.
  • 00:13:30.230 --> 00:13:36.000
  • You found me."
  • 00:13:36.010 --> 00:13:39.040
  • My 2-year-old daughter, one of her favorite places where I
  • 00:13:43.010 --> 00:13:45.220
  • hide, or where she hides, I'm not sure actually who's hiding,
  • 00:13:45.230 --> 00:13:48.280
  • is when I hold her on my shoulder.
  • 00:13:48.290 --> 00:13:51.270
  • And so I'll pick her up and put her on my shoulder
  • 00:13:51.280 --> 00:13:53.230
  • so her head is behind me, and I go, "Where's Bella?
  • 00:13:53.240 --> 00:13:55.270
  • Where's Bella?"
  • 00:13:55.280 --> 00:13:57.070
  • And she goes, "Where's Daddy? Where's Daddy?"
  • 00:13:57.080 --> 00:13:59.210
  • You know, and then I will put her down and go, "I found you."
  • 00:13:59.220 --> 00:14:02.230
  • I go, "Yeah, how did you find me?"
  • 00:14:02.240 --> 00:14:05.270
  • God doesn't hide in order to be hidden.
  • 00:14:05.280 --> 00:14:09.020
  • God, he hides in order to be found.
  • 00:14:09.030 --> 00:14:13.110
  • He wants to be sought after.
  • 00:14:13.120 --> 00:14:16.010
  • He wants us to go on an adventure
  • 00:14:16.020 --> 00:14:18.080
  • where we go looking for him.
  • 00:14:18.090 --> 00:14:20.170
  • What if I was to tell you that you can find God every single
  • 00:14:20.180 --> 00:14:24.070
  • day of your life, that God, he is hiding in your circumstances?
  • 00:14:24.080 --> 00:14:28.180
  • He's hiding in your sphere of influence.
  • 00:14:28.190 --> 00:14:30.270
  • He's hiding in your job. He's hiding in your life.
  • 00:14:30.280 --> 00:14:38.010
  • I would love to invite every person here on an adventure of
  • 00:14:38.020 --> 00:14:40.240
  • the greatest game of hide and seek ever, of finding God,
  • 00:14:40.250 --> 00:14:45.190
  • of suddenly going into moments with wide-eyed open faith,
  • 00:14:45.200 --> 00:14:50.190
  • where you go, "Where is he?
  • 00:14:50.200 --> 00:14:52.220
  • Where's he at?"
  • 00:14:52.230 --> 00:14:54.120
  • Go looking for him.
  • 00:14:54.130 --> 00:14:55.290
  • When you come to church, not coming to church with a sense
  • 00:14:56.000 --> 00:14:57.110
  • of, "Well, here we go again," no, coming in with a sense of
  • 00:14:57.120 --> 00:15:00.200
  • expectation, going, "I know he's here somewhere."
  • 00:15:00.210 --> 00:15:04.140
  • Worship starts, "I wonder if he's in worship."
  • 00:15:04.150 --> 00:15:07.130
  • "I wonder if he's there."
  • 00:15:07.140 --> 00:15:08.280
  • "I wonder if he's in the Word," when you have
  • 00:15:08.290 --> 00:15:10.210
  • your personal devotion.
  • 00:15:10.220 --> 00:15:12.180
  • You see, what's great about God is that where you found him
  • 00:15:12.190 --> 00:15:15.070
  • yesterday might not be where you find him today
  • 00:15:15.080 --> 00:15:17.130
  • 'cause he's a living God.
  • 00:15:17.140 --> 00:15:19.000
  • He's a moving God.
  • 00:15:19.010 --> 00:15:21.030
  • You've gotta go looking for him every single day.
  • 00:15:21.040 --> 00:15:24.120
  • So you have your personal devotion.
  • 00:15:24.130 --> 00:15:26.250
  • You read your Bible and you're like, "Well, that was good,
  • 00:15:26.260 --> 00:15:29.080
  • but he wasn't there.
  • 00:15:29.090 --> 00:15:30.220
  • Where is he?"
  • 00:15:30.230 --> 00:15:32.020
  • Then you put on you worship music and you go, "There he is.
  • 00:15:32.030 --> 00:15:34.180
  • There you are. I found you."
  • 00:15:34.190 --> 00:15:38.060
  • "Well done."
  • 00:15:38.070 --> 00:15:41.090
  • To go on an adventure of finding God every single day.
  • 00:15:41.100 --> 00:15:46.010
  • Jeremiah 29:11 says: "'For I know the plans I have for you,'
  • 00:15:46.020 --> 00:15:49.270
  • declares the Lord, 'Plans to prosper you and not to harm you,
  • 00:15:49.280 --> 00:15:53.180
  • plans to give you hope and a future.'"
  • 00:15:53.190 --> 00:15:56.070
  • Isn't that a great God we serve?
  • 00:15:56.080 --> 00:15:58.050
  • Isn't that a great God we serve that we can go into 2017
  • 00:15:58.060 --> 00:16:01.040
  • with that promise?
  • 00:16:01.050 --> 00:16:02.290
  • "Then you will call on me and you will come
  • 00:16:03.000 --> 00:16:06.010
  • and you will pray to me, and I will listen to you.
  • 00:16:06.020 --> 00:16:10.080
  • You will seek me and you will find me when you seek me
  • 00:16:10.090 --> 00:16:14.280
  • with all of your heart."
  • 00:16:14.290 --> 00:16:17.180
  • And then he says, "I will be found by you."
  • 00:16:17.190 --> 00:16:22.290
  • Wow, "I will be found by you."
  • 00:16:23.000 --> 00:16:28.090
  • So how come we don't find him?
  • 00:16:28.100 --> 00:16:31.200
  • How come so many of us experience in life moments where
  • 00:16:31.210 --> 00:16:35.150
  • we feel that God is absent?
  • 00:16:35.160 --> 00:16:38.260
  • Thomas: If my children, they stuff up, if my children,
  • 00:16:39.270 --> 00:16:42.240
  • they do something naughty,
  • 00:16:42.250 --> 00:16:44.040
  • the nature of the relationship hasn't changed.
  • 00:16:44.050 --> 00:16:47.020
  • Yes, we need to sort out the situation and the circumstances,
  • 00:16:47.030 --> 00:16:50.270
  • but our relationship, they are still my children.
  • 00:16:50.280 --> 00:16:54.240
  • How is it any different than when we are the children of God?
  • 00:16:54.250 --> 00:16:58.270
  • Yeah, we might have some baggage,
  • 00:16:58.280 --> 00:17:00.090
  • and we might have some hurts, and we might have scars,
  • 00:17:00.100 --> 00:17:02.180
  • but the nature of the relationship hasn't changed.
  • 00:17:02.190 --> 00:17:05.160
  • He still welcomes you home. He still embraces you.
  • 00:17:05.170 --> 00:17:09.040
  • He still says, "Come to me."
  • 00:17:09.050 --> 00:17:11.120
  • 00:17:11.130 --> 00:17:13.130
  • If you have any distance in your relationship with a boss
  • 00:17:20.140 --> 00:17:23.220
  • or a spouse or a girlfriend or a friend or, you know,
  • 00:17:23.230 --> 00:17:28.140
  • you get an SMS.
  • 00:17:28.150 --> 00:17:30.140
  • Have you ever got an SMS and you're like,
  • 00:17:30.150 --> 00:17:32.020
  • "What does this mean?"
  • 00:17:32.030 --> 00:17:33.160
  • You know, and it's very simple.
  • 00:17:33.170 --> 00:17:34.260
  • Like, it might be your boss saying,
  • 00:17:34.270 --> 00:17:36.060
  • "Hey, we should meet up this week."
  • 00:17:36.070 --> 00:17:37.260
  • And you're looking at it, and you're like, "Uh-oh,
  • 00:17:37.270 --> 00:17:39.180
  • what does that mean?"
  • 00:17:39.190 --> 00:17:40.280
  • You show it to your wife or your girlfriend.
  • 00:17:40.290 --> 00:17:42.100
  • You go, "My boss wants to meet with me.
  • 00:17:42.110 --> 00:17:43.200
  • What does this mean?"
  • 00:17:43.210 --> 00:17:45.000
  • And you're like, you can read it a million different ways.
  • 00:17:45.010 --> 00:17:46.140
  • You can go, "Hey, we should meet up this week."
  • 00:17:46.150 --> 00:17:48.110
  • "Hey, we should meet up this week."
  • 00:17:48.120 --> 00:17:50.010
  • "We need to meet up this week."
  • 00:17:50.020 --> 00:17:51.190
  • Which one is it?
  • 00:17:51.200 --> 00:17:53.020
  • Well, it all depends on your relationship.
  • 00:17:53.030 --> 00:17:55.130
  • We say to our team, you know, "If you get a text or a message
  • 00:17:55.140 --> 00:17:58.050
  • from me, just picture me with a smile on my face."
  • 00:17:58.060 --> 00:18:01.120
  • "Hey, we should meet up this week."
  • 00:18:01.130 --> 00:18:02.250
  • "Hey, you're fired."
  • 00:18:02.260 --> 00:18:04.080
  • No, I'm kidding. That was a joke.
  • 00:18:04.090 --> 00:18:08.030
  • But distance distorts reality.
  • 00:18:08.040 --> 00:18:11.020
  • When there's distance, we start reading into it.
  • 00:18:11.030 --> 00:18:13.250
  • When there is distance, we start filling in all our insecurities.
  • 00:18:13.260 --> 00:18:17.130
  • That's why you can have one person, you know, reading the
  • 00:18:17.140 --> 00:18:20.180
  • Bible, or even preaching from the Bible, and, you know, listen
  • 00:18:20.190 --> 00:18:24.180
  • to someone talking about their, you know, revelation of God,
  • 00:18:24.190 --> 00:18:28.010
  • and for them, it's like God is an angry God, and he's out
  • 00:18:28.020 --> 00:18:31.180
  • to judge you, and he's out to, you know, limit you.
  • 00:18:31.190 --> 00:18:34.210
  • And you're looking at it, and you're like,
  • 00:18:34.220 --> 00:18:36.110
  • "Are you reading the same Bible as I am?
  • 00:18:36.120 --> 00:18:39.040
  • Did you get the same text that I got?
  • 00:18:39.050 --> 00:18:41.130
  • Because the relationship I have, the revelation I've had,
  • 00:18:41.140 --> 00:18:44.260
  • and the moments I've had with Jesus, he's already spent
  • 00:18:44.270 --> 00:18:48.180
  • all his anger upon the cross.
  • 00:18:48.190 --> 00:18:50.170
  • And now, he just decides a loving relationship.
  • 00:18:50.180 --> 00:18:53.230
  • He's a dad calling his children home."
  • 00:18:53.240 --> 00:18:57.200
  • But when there is distance, we distort the reality.
  • 00:18:57.210 --> 00:19:02.200
  • That's how, when we come to church, even this morning, some
  • 00:19:02.210 --> 00:19:06.230
  • of you would have come to church, and even before walking
  • 00:19:06.240 --> 00:19:09.040
  • into the building, you've already disqualified yourself.
  • 00:19:09.050 --> 00:19:13.140
  • We do these spiritual stock takes, don't we?
  • 00:19:13.150 --> 00:19:15.270
  • Before worship starts, we just, we do a little stock take.
  • 00:19:15.280 --> 00:19:18.220
  • "Have I been a good Christian or a bad Christian,
  • 00:19:18.230 --> 00:19:21.160
  • whatever that is?"
  • 00:19:21.170 --> 00:19:23.060
  • And so we start, I don't know even how we judge this.
  • 00:19:23.070 --> 00:19:26.020
  • I guess we look at the stats and we go,
  • 00:19:26.030 --> 00:19:27.240
  • "Well, how much have I read my Bible?
  • 00:19:27.250 --> 00:19:30.040
  • Okay, five out of seven, eeh."
  • 00:19:30.050 --> 00:19:32.050
  • And then we think about, "Have I, you know,
  • 00:19:32.060 --> 00:19:34.190
  • have I brought my tithe?"
  • 00:19:34.200 --> 00:19:36.050
  • And we think of tithe as protection money against
  • 00:19:36.060 --> 00:19:38.090
  • angry mafia God.
  • 00:19:38.100 --> 00:19:41.090
  • And then, somehow, we summarize it all to whether we've been a
  • 00:19:41.100 --> 00:19:45.180
  • good or bad Christian, and if we've been a bad Christian,
  • 00:19:45.190 --> 00:19:47.270
  • our worship starts down here.
  • 00:19:47.280 --> 00:19:50.000
  • You know, a few holy Frisbees, and then we slowly work it up.
  • 00:19:50.010 --> 00:19:53.270
  • But if you've been a good Christian, I mean,
  • 00:19:53.280 --> 00:19:55.210
  • it's power praise from the first note.
  • 00:19:55.220 --> 00:19:59.020
  • Can I suggest that there is no such thing as a good Christian
  • 00:19:59.030 --> 00:20:01.270
  • or a bad Christian, that we've just been called to be followers
  • 00:20:01.280 --> 00:20:05.130
  • of Jesus and his children?
  • 00:20:05.140 --> 00:20:10.020
  • If my children, they stuff up, if my children, they do
  • 00:20:10.030 --> 00:20:13.120
  • something naughty, the nature of the relationship hasn't changed.
  • 00:20:13.130 --> 00:20:16.260
  • Yes, we need to sort out the situation and the circumstances,
  • 00:20:16.270 --> 00:20:21.010
  • but our relationship, they are still my children.
  • 00:20:21.020 --> 00:20:24.250
  • How is it any different than when we are the children of God?
  • 00:20:24.260 --> 00:20:28.240
  • Yeah, we might have some baggage,
  • 00:20:28.250 --> 00:20:30.040
  • and we might have some hurts, and we might have scars,
  • 00:20:30.050 --> 00:20:32.200
  • but the nature of the relationship hasn't changed.
  • 00:20:32.210 --> 00:20:35.180
  • He still welcomes you home. He still embraces you.
  • 00:20:35.190 --> 00:20:39.150
  • He still says, "Come to me." He doesn't push you away.
  • 00:20:39.160 --> 00:20:43.220
  • But when there is distance in your relationship,
  • 00:20:43.230 --> 00:20:47.010
  • it will cause you to distort the truth.
  • 00:20:47.020 --> 00:20:49.040
  • It will cause you to distort the realities.
  • 00:20:49.050 --> 00:20:52.140
  • That's why your direction in life is more important
  • 00:20:52.150 --> 00:20:55.020
  • than your position in life.
  • 00:20:55.030 --> 00:20:57.240
  • You know, people will come to me and say, "Yeah, but Pastor,
  • 00:20:57.250 --> 00:20:59.150
  • you don't know me, and you don't know where I'm at."
  • 00:20:59.160 --> 00:21:01.200
  • And I'm like, "Well, you know what?
  • 00:21:01.210 --> 00:21:03.090
  • I don't even care."
  • 00:21:03.100 --> 00:21:05.030
  • "What do you mean?"
  • 00:21:05.040 --> 00:21:06.180
  • Well, because it's not about where you are at.
  • 00:21:06.190 --> 00:21:08.140
  • The question is, where are you going?
  • 00:21:08.150 --> 00:21:12.010
  • The question is, are you walking towards Jesus or away from him?
  • 00:21:12.020 --> 00:21:15.230
  • That's why church is so amazing, because right now, no matter
  • 00:21:15.240 --> 00:21:19.040
  • where you are at, today, because you are here, because there
  • 00:21:19.050 --> 00:21:22.230
  • is breath in your lungs, you have a hope for the future.
  • 00:21:22.240 --> 00:21:26.120
  • You can turn around and you can change
  • 00:21:26.130 --> 00:21:28.180
  • the direction of your life.
  • 00:21:28.190 --> 00:21:31.120
  • Doesn't matter where you are at.
  • 00:21:31.130 --> 00:21:33.010
  • The question is, where are you going?
  • 00:21:33.020 --> 00:21:35.040
  • Matthew 6:33 says: "'Seek first the kingdom of God.'"
  • 00:21:35.050 --> 00:21:38.210
  • "Seek," it's an active word, and it's something that we do.
  • 00:21:38.220 --> 00:21:42.010
  • We seek God.
  • 00:21:42.020 --> 00:21:44.010
  • But we get in our mind and we think that Jesus is found in a
  • 00:21:44.020 --> 00:21:47.190
  • particular time or place, and so we think we can
  • 00:21:47.200 --> 00:21:51.090
  • walk away from Jesus.
  • 00:21:51.100 --> 00:21:53.170
  • "Well, I've walked away from Jesus."
  • 00:21:53.180 --> 00:21:56.110
  • And what we don't realize is that as we're walking away from
  • 00:21:56.120 --> 00:21:59.100
  • Jesus, Jesus is walking and following you wherever you go.
  • 00:21:59.110 --> 00:22:04.000
  • I don't know why I just looked like the Grinch, but.
  • 00:22:04.010 --> 00:22:08.000
  • So, we're walking away from Jesus.
  • 00:22:08.010 --> 00:22:10.010
  • You know, I love how C.S. Lewis puts it.
  • 00:22:10.020 --> 00:22:12.040
  • He says, "Mercy and grace are like
  • 00:22:12.050 --> 00:22:13.280
  • the two bloodhounds of heaven."
  • 00:22:13.290 --> 00:22:15.280
  • I mean, I love that picture because as you think that your
  • 00:22:15.290 --> 00:22:18.190
  • children or your grandchildren, they've walked away from Jesus,
  • 00:22:18.200 --> 00:22:21.240
  • I'm picturing God in heaven sitting with mercy and grace,
  • 00:22:21.250 --> 00:22:25.020
  • going, "Sic 'em, boys," and, you know, sending them off.
  • 00:22:25.030 --> 00:22:28.000
  • And as your children are walking away, and as you've been walking
  • 00:22:28.010 --> 00:22:30.170
  • away, you've got these two bloodhounds of heaven, grace
  • 00:22:30.180 --> 00:22:33.060
  • and mercy, barking the promise of God over your life.
  • 00:22:33.070 --> 00:22:37.050
  • Come on, you were created for more than that.
  • 00:22:37.060 --> 00:22:39.120
  • Every prayer, every promise that's ever
  • 00:22:39.130 --> 00:22:41.060
  • been spoken over you.
  • 00:22:41.070 --> 00:22:44.030
  • See, Jesus is not found in a time or a place.
  • 00:22:44.040 --> 00:22:48.060
  • Jesus is found in the pursuit of him.
  • 00:22:48.070 --> 00:22:52.020
  • The moment you decide Jesus is the moment you find him.
  • 00:22:52.030 --> 00:22:56.040
  • And matter of fact, you can't even finish his name,
  • 00:22:56.050 --> 00:22:58.220
  • and then you've run right into him.
  • 00:22:58.230 --> 00:23:00.130
  • You stand here and suddenly you say, "Je--"
  • 00:23:00.140 --> 00:23:02.220
  • He is right there.
  • 00:23:02.230 --> 00:23:05.120
  • You find him in the pursuit of him.
  • 00:23:05.130 --> 00:23:08.140
  • You don't have to go to him.
  • 00:23:08.150 --> 00:23:10.020
  • You don't have to get back to him.
  • 00:23:10.030 --> 00:23:11.120
  • You don't have to make up time, make up space.
  • 00:23:11.130 --> 00:23:14.130
  • Just turn around.
  • 00:23:14.140 --> 00:23:16.110
  • The moment you decide on him is the moment that you find him.
  • 00:23:16.120 --> 00:23:22.030
  • You know, someone once said, "Evangelism is just one beggar
  • 00:23:22.040 --> 00:23:24.070
  • telling another beggar where the bread is."
  • 00:23:24.080 --> 00:23:27.170
  • I mean, isn't that what church is?
  • 00:23:27.180 --> 00:23:29.070
  • I mean, isn't that what we do when we get together here
  • 00:23:29.080 --> 00:23:31.220
  • and we're sort of just all encouraging one another,
  • 00:23:31.230 --> 00:23:33.230
  • going, "Hey, I found him.
  • 00:23:33.240 --> 00:23:35.280
  • You can find him too.
  • 00:23:35.290 --> 00:23:37.260
  • I don't know where he's hiding in your life, but all I know is
  • 00:23:37.270 --> 00:23:40.100
  • that when I was in my valley, I found him.
  • 00:23:40.110 --> 00:23:43.130
  • All I know is that when I was gone out and I thought
  • 00:23:43.140 --> 00:23:46.160
  • I was away from him, he was sitting right there
  • 00:23:46.170 --> 00:23:49.030
  • behind a little silly thing.
  • 00:23:49.040 --> 00:23:51.150
  • I found him in my life, and you can find him too."
  • 00:23:51.160 --> 00:23:56.260
  • Thomas: No, I'm here because God has me here for a reason,
  • 00:23:56.270 --> 00:24:01.010
  • that there is a mission, there is an assignment,
  • 00:24:01.020 --> 00:24:03.150
  • and if I will be willing to look for it.
  • 00:24:03.160 --> 00:24:06.200
  • You see, if we will ask, if we will seek, if we will knock,
  • 00:24:06.210 --> 00:24:11.030
  • then the door will be opened.
  • 00:24:11.040 --> 00:24:13.090
  • 00:24:13.100 --> 00:24:15.100
  • whole story, 'cause we don't just find him for ourselves.
  • 00:24:21.090 --> 00:24:24.290
  • Our responsibility is to help the people around us
  • 00:24:25.000 --> 00:24:28.230
  • to find him as well.
  • 00:24:28.240 --> 00:24:31.140
  • If you turn with me to Acts 17, verse 25, it says:
  • 00:24:31.150 --> 00:24:37.140
  • "Paul then stood up in the meeting of the areopagus
  • 00:24:37.150 --> 00:24:40.150
  • and said: 'People of Athens!
  • 00:24:40.160 --> 00:24:42.270
  • I see that in every way you are very religious.'"
  • 00:24:42.280 --> 00:24:46.140
  • Oh, wow, that's a good note. Thank you, we appreciate that.
  • 00:24:46.150 --> 00:24:54.020
  • You know, the Bible is just, it just sounds great
  • 00:24:54.030 --> 00:24:56.000
  • when there's a keyboard.
  • 00:24:56.010 --> 00:24:59.290
  • "For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects
  • 00:25:00.020 --> 00:25:02.280
  • of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription:
  • 00:25:02.290 --> 00:25:06.150
  • 'To an unknown God.'
  • 00:25:06.160 --> 00:25:09.050
  • So you are ignorant of the very thing that you worship--
  • 00:25:09.060 --> 00:25:11.260
  • and this is what I'm going to proclaim to you.
  • 00:25:11.270 --> 00:25:14.000
  • The God who made the world and everything in it,
  • 00:25:14.010 --> 00:25:16.100
  • the Lord of the heavens and earth, he does not live
  • 00:25:16.110 --> 00:25:18.270
  • in temples built by human hands.
  • 00:25:18.280 --> 00:25:21.070
  • He's not served by humans' hands, as if he needed anything.
  • 00:25:21.080 --> 00:25:23.290
  • Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath
  • 00:25:24.000 --> 00:25:27.270
  • and everything else.
  • 00:25:27.280 --> 00:25:30.060
  • From one man he made all the nations, that they should
  • 00:25:30.070 --> 00:25:32.210
  • inhabit the whole earth;" and listen to this,
  • 00:25:32.220 --> 00:25:35.250
  • "he marked out their appointed times in history
  • 00:25:35.260 --> 00:25:39.280
  • and the boundaries of their land."
  • 00:25:39.290 --> 00:25:42.200
  • God did this so they would seek him and perhaps reach out for
  • 00:25:42.210 --> 00:25:46.270
  • him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us."
  • 00:25:46.280 --> 00:25:53.020
  • It says that God, he marked out where you live,
  • 00:25:53.030 --> 00:25:57.150
  • when you live there.
  • 00:25:57.160 --> 00:26:00.140
  • What if-- just putting it out there--
  • 00:26:00.150 --> 00:26:03.240
  • what if there was no coincidence in life?
  • 00:26:03.250 --> 00:26:07.110
  • What if where you go and get your coffee,
  • 00:26:07.120 --> 00:26:10.060
  • where you go and get your groceries,
  • 00:26:10.070 --> 00:26:11.290
  • where you go and get your clothes,
  • 00:26:12.000 --> 00:26:13.220
  • where you go and drop your kids off at school,
  • 00:26:13.230 --> 00:26:16.080
  • where you go and wherever you might be going during the
  • 00:26:16.090 --> 00:26:19.030
  • day, during the week, what if it was already set out?
  • 00:26:19.040 --> 00:26:24.020
  • What if that time and place was already set out with the
  • 00:26:24.030 --> 00:26:27.210
  • specific purpose in mind that someone might reach out
  • 00:26:27.220 --> 00:26:31.240
  • and find Jesus?
  • 00:26:31.250 --> 00:26:33.190
  • What if we walked into every situation with our eyes open,
  • 00:26:33.200 --> 00:26:37.180
  • keenly aware that God is hiding somewhere in this situation?
  • 00:26:37.190 --> 00:26:43.040
  • Now, I'm not talking about evangelism, where you walk in,
  • 00:26:43.050 --> 00:26:45.210
  • you know, with that steely look, and, you know--
  • 00:26:45.220 --> 00:26:48.060
  • you know those constipated Christians?
  • 00:26:48.070 --> 00:26:52.230
  • You know, they're like, "Arrgh," you know,
  • 00:26:52.240 --> 00:26:55.080
  • "let me tell you about Jesus."
  • 00:26:55.090 --> 00:26:56.240
  • And you look at them, and you're like, "Does it hurt?"
  • 00:26:56.250 --> 00:26:58.220
  • you know?
  • 00:26:58.230 --> 00:27:00.140
  • Or "You should follow Jesus."
  • 00:27:00.150 --> 00:27:01.280
  • I'm like, "Oh, pass on that one."
  • 00:27:01.290 --> 00:27:05.140
  • I'm not talking about that.
  • 00:27:05.150 --> 00:27:07.010
  • I'm just talking about a relaxed, but aware,
  • 00:27:07.020 --> 00:27:10.260
  • that you go in and you realize, "You know what?
  • 00:27:10.270 --> 00:27:13.000
  • I'm not just in this café
  • 00:27:13.010 --> 00:27:14.180
  • because it's the best coffee in town.
  • 00:27:14.190 --> 00:27:16.030
  • I'm not just here because it's the best food.
  • 00:27:16.040 --> 00:27:17.270
  • I'm not just here because it's the local, you know,
  • 00:27:17.280 --> 00:27:20.040
  • convenience store.
  • 00:27:20.050 --> 00:27:21.170
  • No, I'm here because God has me here for a reason, that there is
  • 00:27:21.180 --> 00:27:25.250
  • a mission, there is an assignment, and if I will just
  • 00:27:25.260 --> 00:27:28.190
  • be aware, and if I will be willing to look for it."
  • 00:27:28.200 --> 00:27:32.120
  • You see, if we will ask, if we will seek, if we will knock,
  • 00:27:32.130 --> 00:27:37.040
  • then the door will be opened.
  • 00:27:37.050 --> 00:27:39.040
  • Now, sometimes, it's trying to the door handle and you go,
  • 00:27:39.050 --> 00:27:41.170
  • "Well, that doesn't open."
  • 00:27:41.180 --> 00:27:43.020
  • That's cool, it's fine, but at least try, at least try.
  • 00:27:43.030 --> 00:27:47.120
  • So, how do we do it?
  • 00:27:47.130 --> 00:27:49.020
  • Well, Paul says that he was walking around and he found
  • 00:27:49.030 --> 00:27:51.110
  • a statue with an inscription to an unknown God.
  • 00:27:51.120 --> 00:27:55.200
  • He found common ground.
  • 00:27:55.210 --> 00:27:58.010
  • It's just a matter of finding common ground.
  • 00:27:58.020 --> 00:28:00.250
  • It might be you walking into a café, or in our case, this
  • 00:28:00.260 --> 00:28:04.010
  • week, walking into a shop in a mall, and the person just,
  • 00:28:04.020 --> 00:28:09.000
  • by coincidence, says, "Well, I've been to Copenhagen."
  • 00:28:09.010 --> 00:28:12.160
  • "Oh, really?
  • 00:28:12.170 --> 00:28:14.060
  • Like, that's funny.
  • 00:28:14.070 --> 00:28:15.160
  • You know, you here in Phoenix, been in Copenhagen," you know,
  • 00:28:15.170 --> 00:28:17.290
  • having a conversation.
  • 00:28:18.000 --> 00:28:19.090
  • It's common ground.
  • 00:28:19.100 --> 00:28:21.080
  • It's amazing how, if you will step through that door,
  • 00:28:21.090 --> 00:28:24.120
  • suddenly, you will hear these conversations or these comments:
  • 00:28:24.130 --> 00:28:27.060
  • "That's funny that you said that.
  • 00:28:27.070 --> 00:28:29.050
  • I was just thinking that."
  • 00:28:29.060 --> 00:28:31.030
  • Or "That's funny, me and my friend,
  • 00:28:31.040 --> 00:28:32.290
  • we were just talking about."
  • 00:28:33.000 --> 00:28:35.000
  • Or "That's funny, what a coincidence."
  • 00:28:35.010 --> 00:28:36.290
  • And I could just picture God up in heaven,
  • 00:28:37.000 --> 00:28:38.230
  • "Yeah, what a coincidence.
  • 00:28:38.240 --> 00:28:41.280
  • I had nothing to do with that one.
  • 00:28:41.290 --> 00:28:44.060
  • And you know, it's not as if I placed your parents here
  • 00:28:44.070 --> 00:28:47.120
  • and I made sure they went to college together
  • 00:28:47.130 --> 00:28:49.080
  • so they could find each other and have you.
  • 00:28:49.090 --> 00:28:51.170
  • And their parents over there, they went to that college.
  • 00:28:51.180 --> 00:28:54.050
  • And then I made sure they got fired so they would be moving
  • 00:28:54.060 --> 00:28:56.080
  • over here so they could go and get this job so you guys could
  • 00:28:56.090 --> 00:28:59.030
  • meet each other 20 years later.
  • 00:28:59.040 --> 00:29:01.060
  • No, I had nothing to do with it, what a coincidence."
  • 00:29:01.070 --> 00:29:06.220
  • "There you are. I found you."
  • 00:29:06.230 --> 00:29:10.260
  • "Yeah, well done."
  • 00:29:10.270 --> 00:29:14.120
  • God is hiding in order to be found.
  • 00:29:14.130 --> 00:29:19.290
  • Now, that doesn't mean he's gonna just open every door, or
  • 00:29:20.000 --> 00:29:22.140
  • if the door's opened, that he's just gonna force you through it.
  • 00:29:22.150 --> 00:29:25.030
  • You still have to walk through it.
  • 00:29:25.040 --> 00:29:27.200
  • Faith demands action, and action requires faith.
  • 00:29:27.210 --> 00:29:31.120
  • You actually have to walk through the door.
  • 00:29:31.130 --> 00:29:34.240
  • But I wanna invite you on an adventure this week, that
  • 00:29:34.250 --> 00:29:38.020
  • wherever you might find yourself, whether it's at work
  • 00:29:38.030 --> 00:29:40.200
  • or at home or out and about, at your kids' school, or sports,
  • 00:29:40.210 --> 00:29:45.250
  • whatever it might be, just open your eyes.
  • 00:29:45.260 --> 00:29:49.270
  • Open your ears and just be aware that there might be
  • 00:29:49.280 --> 00:29:54.190
  • some common ground.
  • 00:29:54.200 --> 00:29:56.060
  • It might just you overhearing someone saying,
  • 00:29:56.070 --> 00:29:58.110
  • "Man, it's been a tough week."
  • 00:29:58.120 --> 00:30:00.130
  • See, if I hear that, I'm like,
  • 00:30:00.140 --> 00:30:01.260
  • "I wonder why I needed to hear that."
  • 00:30:01.270 --> 00:30:04.070
  • "Hey, are you all right?
  • 00:30:04.080 --> 00:30:05.170
  • Is there anything I can do for you."
  • 00:30:05.180 --> 00:30:06.280
  • You don't have to walk in with, like, thunder and lightbulbs*
  • 00:30:06.290 --> 00:30:08.210
  • and go, "Hey, Jesus, you know, mercy and grace bloodhounds,
  • 00:30:08.220 --> 00:30:11.140
  • sic him," you know?
  • 00:30:11.150 --> 00:30:14.230
  • But just, there's common ground.
  • 00:30:14.240 --> 00:30:17.090
  • Let's go into the common ground and see what happens.
  • 00:30:17.100 --> 00:30:22.250
  • Would you go on an adventure with us to play a game of hide
  • 00:30:22.260 --> 00:30:27.100
  • and seek, to go looking for God in your everyday, looking for
  • 00:30:27.110 --> 00:30:31.110
  • God in your sphere of influence, looking for God at your
  • 00:30:31.120 --> 00:30:34.040
  • families, looking for God around the dinner table, looking for
  • 00:30:34.050 --> 00:30:37.100
  • God in your finances, looking for God at your workplace?
  • 00:30:37.110 --> 00:30:41.240
  • Hide-and-seek moments, but then there's those of us that we just
  • 00:30:41.250 --> 00:30:48.110
  • don't see it because we are the ones with the distance.
  • 00:30:48.120 --> 00:30:52.170
  • There is that distance that's distorted the view of God.
  • 00:30:52.180 --> 00:30:57.160
  • You know, often, when we talk about the relationship with
  • 00:30:57.170 --> 00:31:00.130
  • Jesus, we can often paint these horrible pictures
  • 00:31:00.140 --> 00:31:04.020
  • of your circumstances falling apart.
  • 00:31:04.030 --> 00:31:07.100
  • But you know, your circumstances don't have to be falling apart,
  • 00:31:07.110 --> 00:31:10.060
  • but you know that your soul is.
  • 00:31:10.070 --> 00:31:13.260
  • You know, I wanna talk to anyone here, and I would love to pray
  • 00:31:13.270 --> 00:31:15.290
  • for anyone here, where you, there is a distance
  • 00:31:16.000 --> 00:31:17.270
  • in your relationship with Jesus.
  • 00:31:17.280 --> 00:31:20.000
  • And it might not right now be showing on the outside,
  • 00:31:20.010 --> 00:31:23.060
  • but you know that it's happening on the inside.
  • 00:31:23.070 --> 00:31:25.200
  • We've got different words for it.
  • 00:31:25.210 --> 00:31:27.180
  • You know, we all describe sin different.
  • 00:31:27.190 --> 00:31:30.100
  • You know, people talk, you know, in church, we call it sin.
  • 00:31:30.110 --> 00:31:33.230
  • Others, they call it emptiness.
  • 00:31:33.240 --> 00:31:35.210
  • Some, they might just say, "Man, I'm not just feeling good.
  • 00:31:35.220 --> 00:31:37.250
  • You know, there's something inside of my soul
  • 00:31:37.260 --> 00:31:40.030
  • that is hurting."
  • 00:31:40.040 --> 00:31:41.260
  • You know what it is.
  • 00:31:41.270 --> 00:31:43.060
  • It's that feeling of you sitting at a party
  • 00:31:43.070 --> 00:31:44.290
  • but still feeling lonely.
  • 00:31:45.000 --> 00:31:46.280
  • You know, you're surrounded by people
  • 00:31:46.290 --> 00:31:49.050
  • but feeling like no one cares.
  • 00:31:49.060 --> 00:31:52.050
  • Your soul is hurting. Your soul is bleeding.
  • 00:31:52.060 --> 00:31:55.170
  • We give in to the desires.
  • 00:31:55.180 --> 00:31:57.140
  • We give in to different lusts and we give in to different
  • 00:31:57.150 --> 00:32:00.190
  • things of our lives, and we think that it's, you know,
  • 00:32:00.200 --> 00:32:03.090
  • pleasing for a moment, but really it's just hurting
  • 00:32:03.100 --> 00:32:05.170
  • the condition of our soul.
  • 00:32:05.180 --> 00:32:08.110
  • And the moment we accept Jesus, the moment we stop running away
  • 00:32:08.120 --> 00:32:13.170
  • from him and just saying, "Here I am," finally, there is peace.
  • 00:32:13.180 --> 00:32:19.260
  • You can go to bed tonight, lay your head on that pillow,
  • 00:32:19.270 --> 00:32:24.090
  • and finally experience peace, peace of your soul,
  • 00:32:24.100 --> 00:32:29.180
  • and wake up in the morning, even on a Monday morning,
  • 00:32:29.190 --> 00:32:32.240
  • with a sense of purpose, that,
  • 00:32:32.250 --> 00:32:34.200
  • "I'm alive for something bigger than myself."
  • 00:32:34.210 --> 00:32:37.230
  • Could I get everyone to just close your eyes, bow your heads?
  • 00:32:37.240 --> 00:32:40.280
  • Not to create a religious moment, just to give you
  • 00:32:40.290 --> 00:32:42.170
  • a moment of privacy.
  • 00:32:42.180 --> 00:32:44.100
  • But if you're in this place and you don't know Jesus, you don't
  • 00:32:44.110 --> 00:32:46.070
  • know Jesus the way that I'm talking about, and today, you
  • 00:32:46.080 --> 00:32:50.010
  • just say, "You know what?
  • 00:32:50.020 --> 00:32:51.170
  • When you pray for people to accept Jesus, when you pray for
  • 00:32:51.180 --> 00:32:53.140
  • people to come home to Jesus, can you include me
  • 00:32:53.150 --> 00:32:56.150
  • in that prayer?
  • 00:32:56.160 --> 00:32:58.040
  • I need that peace in my life.
  • 00:32:58.050 --> 00:32:59.180
  • I need that purpose in my life.
  • 00:32:59.190 --> 00:33:02.010
  • I need my soul to be restored again."
  • 00:33:02.020 --> 00:33:05.070
  • I'm just gonna count to three, and when I get to three, I want
  • 00:33:05.080 --> 00:33:07.260
  • every person who wants to be included in this prayer,
  • 00:33:07.270 --> 00:33:10.210
  • when I say, "Three," you just lift your hand.
  • 00:33:10.220 --> 00:33:13.030
  • And in doing so, you're saying,
  • 00:33:13.040 --> 00:33:14.230
  • "Thomas, please, can you include me in this prayer?"
  • 00:33:14.240 --> 00:33:17.100
  • You ready?
  • 00:33:17.110 --> 00:33:18.240
  • One, don't let this moment slip by.
  • 00:33:18.250 --> 00:33:20.160
  • Don't put it off to a moment you're not guaranteed you have.
  • 00:33:20.170 --> 00:33:22.140
  • We have right here, right now.
  • 00:33:22.150 --> 00:33:24.170
  • Two, I'm not talking to the person next to you.
  • 00:33:24.180 --> 00:33:27.000
  • I'm talking to you.
  • 00:33:27.010 --> 00:33:28.100
  • Do you know Jesus?
  • 00:33:28.110 --> 00:33:29.210
  • I'm not saying, "Go out, become perfect, come back in,
  • 00:33:29.220 --> 00:33:31.130
  • and then he will love you."
  • 00:33:31.140 --> 00:33:32.280
  • No, he loves you just the way you are.
  • 00:33:32.290 --> 00:33:34.170
  • We serve a come as you are Savior.
  • 00:33:34.180 --> 00:33:36.160
  • So when I say, "Three," I want every person who wants to say,
  • 00:33:36.170 --> 00:33:39.120
  • "Yes," to Jesus for the first time, you're coming back today,
  • 00:33:39.130 --> 00:33:42.200
  • you're saying, "This is it, include me in this prayer,"
  • 00:33:42.210 --> 00:33:45.030
  • when I say, "Three," just lift your hand.
  • 00:33:45.040 --> 00:33:47.010
  • You ready?
  • 00:33:47.020 --> 00:33:48.130
  • On three, three, just lift your hands all over this place.
  • 00:33:48.140 --> 00:33:51.160
  • Thank you, there's hands all over this place.
  • 00:33:51.170 --> 00:33:53.160
  • You are not alone. Hands all over this place.
  • 00:33:53.170 --> 00:33:57.030
  • Just keep them up just for one moment.
  • 00:33:57.040 --> 00:33:58.260
  • Anyone else, just lift your hand.
  • 00:33:58.270 --> 00:34:00.180
  • A friend might have brought you.
  • 00:34:00.190 --> 00:34:02.070
  • You might be coming for a while,
  • 00:34:02.080 --> 00:34:03.210
  • but you've never made this decision yourself.
  • 00:34:03.220 --> 00:34:05.120
  • Just lift your hand, saying,
  • 00:34:05.130 --> 00:34:06.270
  • "Thomas, include me in this prayer."
  • 00:34:06.280 --> 00:34:09.130
  • Amazing, hundreds of hands.
  • 00:34:09.140 --> 00:34:11.240
  • You can put your hands down.
  • 00:34:11.250 --> 00:34:13.120
  • This is what we're going to do.
  • 00:34:13.130 --> 00:34:14.240
  • Listen, a hand in the air doesn't save us.
  • 00:34:14.250 --> 00:34:16.150
  • Just like if you're drowning in the ocean
  • 00:34:16.160 --> 00:34:17.270
  • and you wave your hand, that doesn't save you.
  • 00:34:17.280 --> 00:34:19.170
  • It just lets someone know you need saving.
  • 00:34:19.180 --> 00:34:21.160
  • You still need to put your trust in someone that's stronger
  • 00:34:21.170 --> 00:34:23.290
  • than you and let them pull you up.
  • 00:34:24.000 --> 00:34:26.110
  • And the Bible says, "When we confess with our mouth
  • 00:34:26.120 --> 00:34:28.270
  • and believe in our heart that Jesus Christ
  • 00:34:28.280 --> 00:34:31.060
  • is the Lord of our lives, in that moment,
  • 00:34:31.070 --> 00:34:33.160
  • we find forgiveness from our past, a purpose for today,
  • 00:34:33.170 --> 00:34:36.190
  • and a hope for the future."
  • 00:34:36.200 --> 00:34:38.100
  • So, come on, can you just, everyone, can we repeat
  • 00:34:38.110 --> 00:34:40.110
  • this prayer together with me?
  • 00:34:40.120 --> 00:34:42.090
  • But especially those of you who lifted your hand just say
  • 00:34:42.100 --> 00:34:45.030
  • after me, say: "Dear Jesus, I'm sorry for my sin,
  • 00:34:45.040 --> 00:34:50.120
  • but today I choose you.
  • 00:34:50.130 --> 00:34:53.120
  • I make you my Savior. I make you my Lord.
  • 00:34:53.130 --> 00:34:57.110
  • And from today, I'm a follower of Jesus.
  • 00:34:57.120 --> 00:35:01.040
  • I am forgiven, and I am free.
  • 00:35:01.050 --> 00:35:05.100
  • In the name of Jesus, amen."
  • 00:35:05.110 --> 00:35:09.130
  • Brandon: They see the world out there and recognize that
  • 00:35:09.140 --> 00:35:12.070
  • we've been commissioned to go interact with that and to go
  • 00:35:12.080 --> 00:35:15.180
  • make disciples of what I used to run away from,
  • 00:35:15.190 --> 00:35:18.240
  • what I used to judge and mudsling.
  • 00:35:18.250 --> 00:35:21.090
  • But I look forward to being in a place,
  • 00:35:21.100 --> 00:35:23.050
  • especially downtown, where it's so eclectic.
  • 00:35:23.060 --> 00:35:26.010
  • I mean, you have everyone from every walk of life down there,
  • 00:35:26.020 --> 00:35:30.120
  • and serving in a, for example, at a table like I have decided,
  • 00:35:30.130 --> 00:35:35.090
  • you know, it is such a privilege and a breath of fresh air.
  • 00:35:35.100 --> 00:35:38.250
  • 00:35:38.260 --> 00:35:40.260
  • Brandon: I was kind of forcibly brought to church by my
  • 00:35:47.020 --> 00:35:51.020
  • parents about 20 years ago, but I was very intrigued
  • 00:35:51.030 --> 00:35:54.090
  • with the Bible and matters of truth and such.
  • 00:35:54.100 --> 00:35:57.110
  • And so that kinda just spawned off from an obsession with
  • 00:35:57.120 --> 00:36:01.090
  • learning, as you can see behind me, and trying to understand
  • 00:36:01.100 --> 00:36:05.160
  • different world-views, philosophies, theology,
  • 00:36:05.170 --> 00:36:09.030
  • understanding who I am, who others are.
  • 00:36:09.040 --> 00:36:11.210
  • And this kinda became my identity.
  • 00:36:11.220 --> 00:36:14.290
  • This became my litmus test for who I am and how well
  • 00:36:15.000 --> 00:36:19.290
  • God has pleased is with me.
  • 00:36:20.000 --> 00:36:21.240
  • And everything was going well for a long, long time,
  • 00:36:21.250 --> 00:36:26.070
  • just learning, teaching others, preaching, debating,
  • 00:36:26.080 --> 00:36:31.000
  • to the point that I was not only proud but obnoxious
  • 00:36:31.010 --> 00:36:35.030
  • with my acquisition of knowledge.
  • 00:36:35.040 --> 00:36:37.060
  • And then a few years ago, I had just a bunch of free time
  • 00:36:37.070 --> 00:36:39.270
  • that I couldn't remember having in a long time.
  • 00:36:39.280 --> 00:36:43.160
  • And I remember standing right here, looking at all these
  • 00:36:43.170 --> 00:36:46.050
  • books, and I just had this overwhelming emptiness.
  • 00:36:46.060 --> 00:36:49.180
  • So I guess you could say I had a quarter-life crisis,
  • 00:36:49.190 --> 00:36:52.130
  • where I really did not know what to do with that.
  • 00:36:52.140 --> 00:36:55.200
  • I thought that maybe I'd come to an end of my walk with him,
  • 00:36:55.210 --> 00:36:58.260
  • that maybe there was no more stones to unturn,
  • 00:36:58.270 --> 00:37:01.190
  • that this was it, and I exhausted everything.
  • 00:37:01.200 --> 00:37:04.230
  • So, for a few months, I really just kinda went
  • 00:37:04.240 --> 00:37:07.170
  • through the motions, but I was in a pretty dark place.
  • 00:37:07.180 --> 00:37:11.100
  • I was despairing a lot.
  • 00:37:11.110 --> 00:37:17.130
  • Now, what's crazy is the Lord had provided
  • 00:37:17.140 --> 00:37:19.220
  • a safety net for me.
  • 00:37:19.230 --> 00:37:21.060
  • He knew that I was gonna be coming to this place,
  • 00:37:21.070 --> 00:37:23.120
  • and I did not.
  • 00:37:23.130 --> 00:37:24.250
  • Through the years, I had done all that I could to kill
  • 00:37:24.260 --> 00:37:27.250
  • my emotions in the process, became like a stoic, really,
  • 00:37:27.260 --> 00:37:32.250
  • 'cause I did not like emotions.
  • 00:37:32.260 --> 00:37:34.220
  • I had seen major abuses of emotions, so I mean,
  • 00:37:34.230 --> 00:37:37.280
  • I was the type of individual,
  • 00:37:37.290 --> 00:37:39.200
  • if I were to raise my hands in worship,
  • 00:37:39.210 --> 00:37:42.040
  • I might consider that in a closed room,
  • 00:37:42.050 --> 00:37:44.280
  • but even then, I felt awkward.
  • 00:37:44.290 --> 00:37:46.230
  • So, I see this message from Carl Lentz,
  • 00:37:46.240 --> 00:37:49.060
  • and he's making me cry,
  • 00:37:49.070 --> 00:37:51.030
  • and I did not know what to do with that.
  • 00:37:51.040 --> 00:37:54.210
  • That deeply disturbed me, but I wanted more.
  • 00:37:54.220 --> 00:37:57.270
  • I found myself being refreshed like I was coming to the Lord
  • 00:37:57.280 --> 00:38:00.200
  • for the first time again when I was a teenager,
  • 00:38:00.210 --> 00:38:03.090
  • and I just knew I needed more of it.
  • 00:38:03.100 --> 00:38:05.060
  • Just, God was bringing life to the dead places, and so, yeah,
  • 00:38:05.070 --> 00:38:10.010
  • we came to Hillsong Church a year ago.
  • 00:38:10.020 --> 00:38:12.130
  • And I had this idea of church just embedded within me
  • 00:38:12.140 --> 00:38:16.000
  • that it's us versus them, that church is your castle
  • 00:38:16.010 --> 00:38:20.180
  • and you protect yourself from the world out there.
  • 00:38:20.190 --> 00:38:24.090
  • And what I love about Hillsong is that they
  • 00:38:24.100 --> 00:38:26.200
  • completely tip that table.
  • 00:38:26.210 --> 00:38:28.230
  • They see the world out there and recognize that we've been
  • 00:38:28.240 --> 00:38:31.170
  • commissioned to go interact with that and to go make disciples
  • 00:38:31.180 --> 00:38:35.290
  • of what I used to run away from,
  • 00:38:36.000 --> 00:38:38.050
  • what I used to judge and mudsling.
  • 00:38:38.060 --> 00:38:40.140
  • But I look forward to being in a place,
  • 00:38:40.150 --> 00:38:42.080
  • especially downtown, where it's so eclectic.
  • 00:38:42.090 --> 00:38:45.070
  • I mean, you have everyone from every walk of life down there,
  • 00:38:45.080 --> 00:38:49.220
  • and serving in a, for example, at a table like I have decided,
  • 00:38:49.230 --> 00:38:54.090
  • you know, it is such a privilege and a breath of fresh air.
  • 00:38:54.100 --> 00:38:57.160
  • 'Cause the church that I was at, it was not, unfortunately
  • 00:38:57.170 --> 00:39:01.250
  • a normal thing for people to literally come in,
  • 00:39:01.260 --> 00:39:04.160
  • not knowing the Lord, have an encounter with him,
  • 00:39:04.170 --> 00:39:06.280
  • and then to see the scales removed from their eyes.
  • 00:39:06.290 --> 00:39:09.210
  • And then to be able to have the honor to pray with these folks,
  • 00:39:09.220 --> 00:39:13.030
  • to meet with them, to call them later in the week,
  • 00:39:13.040 --> 00:39:15.210
  • to present a Bible to them, it's remarkable.
  • 00:39:15.220 --> 00:39:18.190
  • The Lord had to really break me to rebuild me.
  • 00:39:18.200 --> 00:39:21.130
  • Hillsong has played a huge, huge role in all of that,
  • 00:39:21.140 --> 00:39:27.210
  • and it's turned this heart of stone into a heart
  • 00:39:27.220 --> 00:39:31.070
  • of flesh again, and it's brought back a passion and a fire
  • 00:39:31.080 --> 00:39:36.190
  • that I've missed for years.
  • 00:39:36.200 --> 00:39:39.210
  • And so, the best is yet to come.
  • 00:39:39.220 --> 00:39:42.050
  • I really do believe that, so.
  • 00:39:42.060 --> 00:39:44.110
  • 00:39:44.120 --> 00:39:51.010
  • Brian: Well, I'm so glad you're with us
  • 00:39:51.020 --> 00:39:52.110
  • on the Hillsong Channel, and I wanna ask you a question.
  • 00:39:52.120 --> 00:39:55.040
  • And the question is whether you have a personal relationship
  • 00:39:55.050 --> 00:39:58.160
  • with Jesus, whether you have ever made a conscious choice
  • 00:39:58.170 --> 00:40:01.100
  • to ask him into your life.
  • 00:40:01.110 --> 00:40:03.220
  • You see, the Bible says if you ask him into your life,
  • 00:40:03.230 --> 00:40:05.260
  • he will come in, and he will live in you.
  • 00:40:05.270 --> 00:40:08.200
  • You can encounter God in a personal way.
  • 00:40:08.210 --> 00:40:11.140
  • To me, that doesn't necessarily mean that you see him
  • 00:40:11.150 --> 00:40:14.080
  • physically, but it does mean that something changes.
  • 00:40:14.090 --> 00:40:17.190
  • You know you invited the Lord Jesus Christ into your life
  • 00:40:17.200 --> 00:40:20.280
  • and he did become your Lord and Savior.
  • 00:40:20.290 --> 00:40:23.240
  • What a powerful chance that is.
  • 00:40:23.250 --> 00:40:26.020
  • So have you ever prayed that kind of prayer?
  • 00:40:26.030 --> 00:40:27.290
  • In just a moment, I'm gonna pray a prayer.
  • 00:40:28.000 --> 00:40:29.280
  • I'm gonna ask if you would join me and pray along.
  • 00:40:29.290 --> 00:40:32.160
  • We're gonna pray to Jesus, and I'll believe today is
  • 00:40:32.170 --> 00:40:34.250
  • your day where Jesus Christ comes into your life.
  • 00:40:34.260 --> 00:40:38.130
  • Now, maybe at some point you prayed a prayer like that,
  • 00:40:39.290 --> 00:40:42.280
  • but somewhere along the way, you've lost your way.
  • 00:40:42.290 --> 00:40:45.180
  • And it's not as though God moves.
  • 00:40:45.190 --> 00:40:47.070
  • He said, "I'll never leave you nor forsake you."
  • 00:40:47.080 --> 00:40:49.070
  • I don't for one moment think God unsaves people,
  • 00:40:49.080 --> 00:40:51.260
  • but we can be making choices that have us living alienated
  • 00:40:51.270 --> 00:40:55.060
  • or dislocated from the center of God's will.
  • 00:40:55.070 --> 00:40:58.010
  • So I can't think of a more perfect time to say,
  • 00:40:58.020 --> 00:41:01.150
  • "I wanna come back to that place of living
  • 00:41:01.160 --> 00:41:03.170
  • out of my God encounter.
  • 00:41:03.180 --> 00:41:05.150
  • I wanna come back to that place of serving Jesus
  • 00:41:05.160 --> 00:41:09.110
  • and making him Lord of my life."
  • 00:41:09.120 --> 00:41:11.240
  • This can be your day, a brand-new day,
  • 00:41:11.250 --> 00:41:14.180
  • a brand-new chapter.
  • 00:41:14.190 --> 00:41:16.100
  • So if you're watching and you say,
  • 00:41:16.110 --> 00:41:18.040
  • "Brian, please include me in that prayer.
  • 00:41:18.050 --> 00:41:20.010
  • I need God. I wanna know Jesus.
  • 00:41:20.020 --> 00:41:22.190
  • I wanna get my life right and come back to him."
  • 00:41:22.200 --> 00:41:25.150
  • If that's you, you pray this prayer right alongside me.
  • 00:41:25.160 --> 00:41:28.140
  • We'll pray to God, and I believe today Jesus
  • 00:41:28.150 --> 00:41:31.130
  • will fill your heart and fill your life.
  • 00:41:31.140 --> 00:41:33.170
  • Come on, let's pray: "Dear Jesus,
  • 00:41:33.180 --> 00:41:37.110
  • thank you for all that you are and you are to me.
  • 00:41:37.120 --> 00:41:41.100
  • I recognize my need of you.
  • 00:41:41.110 --> 00:41:43.250
  • I'm gonna invite you now to come into my life
  • 00:41:43.260 --> 00:41:46.090
  • as my Lord and Savior.
  • 00:41:46.100 --> 00:41:48.210
  • I thank you that you can change my life.
  • 00:41:48.220 --> 00:41:51.220
  • You can break the power of sin.
  • 00:41:51.230 --> 00:41:53.200
  • You give me a brand-new beginning
  • 00:41:53.210 --> 00:41:55.150
  • and a brand-new start.
  • 00:41:55.160 --> 00:41:57.080
  • I say from this time I am a child of God, a new creation,
  • 00:41:57.090 --> 00:42:02.050
  • a follower of Jesus Christ.
  • 00:42:02.060 --> 00:42:04.220
  • Thank you for your love and grace.
  • 00:42:04.230 --> 00:42:06.250
  • Thank you for your forgiveness and mercy.
  • 00:42:06.260 --> 00:42:09.050
  • Thank you I don't have to be held by the power
  • 00:42:09.060 --> 00:42:12.000
  • of my old mistakes, failures, sins, or past.
  • 00:42:12.010 --> 00:42:15.080
  • This is a brand-new day, amen."
  • 00:42:15.090 --> 00:42:19.010
  • My wealth is in the cross
  • 00:42:19.020 --> 00:42:22.170
  • There's nothing more I want
  • 00:42:22.180 --> 00:42:25.240
  • than just to know his love
  • 00:42:25.250 --> 00:42:29.070
  • My heart is set on Christ
  • 00:42:29.080 --> 00:42:32.120
  • and I will count all else as loss
  • 00:42:32.130 --> 00:42:36.060
  • The greatest of my crowns
  • 00:42:36.070 --> 00:42:39.150
  • mean nothing to me now
  • 00:42:39.160 --> 00:42:42.270
  • For I counted up the cost
  • 00:42:42.280 --> 00:42:46.010
  • and all my wealth is in the cross
  • 00:42:46.020 --> 00:42:50.220
  • the emblem of Salvation, the gift of Calvary
  • 00:43:06.060 --> 00:43:16.060
  • How is it I should profit while he is crucified?
  • 00:43:19.230 --> 00:43:29.230
  • Yet as his life was taken, so I was granted mine
  • 00:43:33.220 --> 00:43:43.220
  • My wealth is in the cross
  • 00:43:48.060 --> 00:43:51.170
  • There's nothing more I want
  • 00:43:51.180 --> 00:43:54.260
  • than just to know his love
  • 00:43:54.270 --> 00:43:58.080
  • My heart is set on Christ
  • 00:43:58.090 --> 00:44:01.090
  • and I will count all else as loss
  • 00:44:01.100 --> 00:44:05.040
  • The greatest of my crowns
  • 00:44:05.050 --> 00:44:08.150
  • mean nothing to me now
  • 00:44:08.160 --> 00:44:11.260
  • For I counted up the cost
  • 00:44:11.270 --> 00:44:15.010
  • and all my wealth is in the cross
  • 00:44:15.020 --> 00:44:20.070
  • 00:44:20.080 --> 00:44:25.050
  • I will not boast in riches
  • 00:44:25.060 --> 00:44:31.180
  • I have no pride in gold
  • 00:44:31.190 --> 00:44:38.220
  • But I will boast in Jesus and in his name alone
  • 00:44:38.230 --> 00:44:48.230
  • My wealth is in the cross
  • 00:44:50.010 --> 00:44:53.040
  • There's nothing more I want
  • 00:44:53.050 --> 00:44:56.150
  • than just to know his love
  • 00:44:56.160 --> 00:45:00.020
  • My heart is set on Christ
  • 00:45:00.030 --> 00:45:03.060
  • and I will count all else as loss
  • 00:45:03.070 --> 00:45:06.290
  • The greatest of my crowns
  • 00:45:07.000 --> 00:45:10.100
  • mean nothing to me now
  • 00:45:10.110 --> 00:45:13.240
  • For I counted up the cost
  • 00:45:13.250 --> 00:45:16.210
  • and all my wealth is in the cross
  • 00:45:16.220 --> 00:45:23.140
  • Yes, all my wealth is in the cross
  • 00:45:23.150 --> 00:45:28.210
  • And when I stand in glory
  • 00:45:33.210 --> 00:45:38.290
  • my crowns before the Lord
  • 00:45:40.090 --> 00:45:45.040
  • let this be my confession
  • 00:45:47.170 --> 00:45:52.260
  • My wealth is in the cross
  • 00:45:54.010 --> 00:46:00.020
  • Benjamin Hastings: Hallelujah!
  • 00:46:00.030 --> 00:46:02.030
  • My wealth is in the cross
  • 00:46:02.040 --> 00:46:05.210
  • There's nothing more I want
  • 00:46:05.220 --> 00:46:08.210
  • than just to know his love
  • 00:46:08.220 --> 00:46:12.030
  • My heart is set on Christ
  • 00:46:12.040 --> 00:46:15.030
  • and I will count all else as loss
  • 00:46:15.040 --> 00:46:19.000
  • The greatest of my crowns
  • 00:46:19.010 --> 00:46:22.110
  • mean nothing to me now
  • 00:46:22.120 --> 00:46:25.260
  • For I counted up the cost
  • 00:46:25.270 --> 00:46:28.260
  • and all my wealth is in the cross
  • 00:46:28.270 --> 00:46:32.220
  • There's nothing more I want
  • 00:46:32.230 --> 00:46:36.040
  • than just to know his love
  • 00:46:36.050 --> 00:46:39.170
  • My heart is set on Christ
  • 00:46:39.180 --> 00:46:42.140
  • and I will count all else as loss
  • 00:46:42.150 --> 00:46:46.140
  • The greatest of my crowns
  • 00:46:46.150 --> 00:46:49.210
  • mean nothing to me now
  • 00:46:49.220 --> 00:46:53.100
  • For I counted up the cost
  • 00:46:53.110 --> 00:46:56.070
  • and all my wealth is in the cross
  • 00:46:56.080 --> 00:47:04.280
  • whoa
  • 00:47:04.290 --> 00:47:08.040
  • Yes, all my wealth is in the cross
  • 00:47:09.250 --> 00:47:17.150
  • My wealth is in the cross
  • 00:47:17.160 --> 00:47:23.040
  • Yes, all my wealth is in the cross
  • 00:47:23.050 --> 00:47:30.220
  • Benjamin: Hallelujah!
  • 00:47:31.280 --> 00:47:33.280
  • How wonderful, how glorious
  • 00:47:35.160 --> 00:47:43.090
  • my Savior's scars victorious
  • 00:47:43.100 --> 00:47:51.110
  • My chains are gone
  • 00:47:51.120 --> 00:47:55.080
  • My debt is paid
  • 00:47:55.090 --> 00:47:59.100
  • From death to life and grace to grace
  • 00:47:59.110 --> 00:48:08.250
  • 00:48:08.260 --> 00:48:16.270
  • When I see that cross, I see freedom
  • 00:48:16.280 --> 00:48:20.270
  • When I see that grave, I'll see Jesus
  • 00:48:20.280 --> 00:48:24.270
  • And from death to life
  • 00:48:24.280 --> 00:48:27.100
  • I will sing your praise in the wonder of your grace
  • 00:48:27.110 --> 00:48:31.260
  • Taya Smith: Come on, you sing.
  • 00:48:31.270 --> 00:48:33.110
  • When I see that cross, I see freedom
  • 00:48:33.120 --> 00:48:36.270
  • When I see that grave, I'll see Jesus
  • 00:48:36.280 --> 00:48:40.290
  • And from death to life I will sing your praise
  • 00:48:41.000 --> 00:48:46.010
  • in the wonder of your grace
  • 00:48:46.020 --> 00:48:48.260
  • When I see that cross, I see freedom
  • 00:48:48.270 --> 00:48:52.250
  • When I see that grave, I'll see Jesus
  • 00:48:52.260 --> 00:48:56.260
  • And from death to life I will sing your praise
  • 00:48:56.270 --> 00:49:02.020
  • in the wonder of your grace
  • 00:49:02.030 --> 00:49:05.050
  • When I see that cross, I see freedom
  • 00:49:05.060 --> 00:49:08.270
  • When I see that grave, I'll see Jesus
  • 00:49:08.280 --> 00:49:12.230
  • And from death to life I will sing your praise
  • 00:49:12.240 --> 00:49:17.280
  • in the wonder of your grace
  • 00:49:17.290 --> 00:49:22.000
  • How my soul will sing your praise
  • 00:49:22.010 --> 00:49:25.270
  • in the wonder of your grace
  • 00:49:25.280 --> 00:49:29.260
  • How my soul will sing your praise
  • 00:49:29.270 --> 00:49:35.120
  • How wonderful, how glorious
  • 00:49:35.130 --> 00:49:43.130
  • my Savior's scars victorious
  • 00:49:43.140 --> 00:49:51.110
  • My chains are gone
  • 00:49:51.120 --> 00:49:55.100
  • My debt is paid
  • 00:49:55.110 --> 00:49:59.130
  • From death to life and grace to grace
  • 00:49:59.140 --> 00:50:08.260
  • When I see that cross, I see freedom
  • 00:50:08.270 --> 00:50:12.200
  • When I see that grave, I'll see Jesus
  • 00:50:12.210 --> 00:50:16.220
  • And from death to life I will sing your praise
  • 00:50:16.230 --> 00:50:21.270
  • in the wonder of your grace
  • 00:50:21.280 --> 00:50:24.240
  • When I see that cross, I see freedom
  • 00:50:24.250 --> 00:50:28.240
  • When I see that grave, I'll see Jesus
  • 00:50:28.250 --> 00:50:32.230
  • And from death to life I will sing your praise
  • 00:50:32.240 --> 00:50:37.240
  • in the wonder of your grace
  • 00:50:37.250 --> 00:50:41.250
  • How my soul will sing your praise
  • 00:50:41.260 --> 00:50:45.240
  • in the wonder of your grace
  • 00:50:45.250 --> 00:50:49.260
  • How my soul will sing your praise
  • 00:50:49.270 --> 00:50:55.070
  • How wonderful, how glorious
