  • 00:09:35.398 --> 00:09:38.501
  • Never ask a question you don't know the answer to.
  • 00:09:38.501 --> 00:09:41.470
  • He assumed that the people in that crowd possessed
  • 00:09:41.470 --> 00:09:43.539
  • Some measure of humanity, some shred of decency,
  • 00:09:43.539 --> 00:09:46.709
  • Some sensitivity to life and death
  • 00:09:46.709 --> 00:09:49.245
  • And reason and commonsense.
  • 00:09:49.245 --> 00:09:51.547
  • But he was wrong.
  • 00:09:51.547 --> 00:09:53.315
  • Envy can do strange things to people.
  • 00:09:53.315 --> 00:09:56.886
  • "therefore, when they had gathered together,
  • 00:09:56.886 --> 00:09:58.721
  • "pilate said to them, 'whom do you want me to release to you?
  • 00:09:58.721 --> 00:10:01.657
  • Barabbas, or jesus who is called christ?'"
  • 00:10:01.657 --> 00:10:05.428
  • Now, notice this: "for he knew that they had handed him over
  • 00:10:05.428 --> 00:10:09.899
  • Because of envy."
  • 00:10:09.899 --> 00:10:11.233
  • He knew. pilate knew full well what was going on.
  • 00:10:11.233 --> 00:10:15.571
  • Therefore, as the governor of judea,
  • 00:10:15.571 --> 00:10:17.707
  • His duty was to free jesus.
  • 00:10:17.707 --> 00:10:20.743
  • He knew that, too.
  • 00:10:20.743 --> 00:10:22.411
  • And as if his conscience was not already burning within him,
  • 00:10:22.411 --> 00:10:26.248
  • He received at that very moment
  • 00:10:26.248 --> 00:10:29.185
  • A remarkable message from his wife.
  • 00:10:29.185 --> 00:10:31.854
  • Now, it's early in the morning.
  • 00:10:31.854 --> 00:10:34.023
  • John writes that pilate presented jesus to the people
  • 00:10:34.023 --> 00:10:37.359
  • At the sixth hour.
  • 00:10:37.359 --> 00:10:38.861
  • And it seems john was reckoning time from midnight,
  • 00:10:38.861 --> 00:10:42.331
  • Different to what you find in the synoptic gospels.
  • 00:10:42.331 --> 00:10:45.000
  • His wife had been sleeping, but she woke up
  • 00:10:45.000 --> 00:10:48.504
  • And had a message delivered to her husband.
  • 00:10:48.504 --> 00:10:52.074
  • I'm not sure how often mrs. pilate sent messages
  • 00:10:52.074 --> 00:10:55.478
  • To her husband while he was doing his job,
  • 00:10:55.478 --> 00:10:57.780
  • How often she told her husband what he should do
  • 00:10:57.780 --> 00:11:00.082
  • In his professional life.
  • 00:11:00.082 --> 00:11:01.817
  • Given the era, my guess is that it didn't happen very often.
  • 00:11:01.817 --> 00:11:05.287
  • So what was happening here was absolutely extraordinary.
  • 00:11:05.287 --> 00:11:10.259
  • Her message was to the point:
  • 00:11:10.259 --> 00:11:12.828
  • "have nothing to do with that just man,
  • 00:11:12.828 --> 00:11:16.031
  • "for i have suffered many things today
  • 00:11:16.031 --> 00:11:18.467
  • In a dream because of him."
  • 00:11:18.467 --> 00:11:20.469
  • So, what do you think is going on inside pilate's mind?
  • 00:11:20.469 --> 00:11:23.105
  • His conscience was screaming at him by now.
  • 00:11:23.105 --> 00:11:26.041
  • He already believed jesus was innocent,
  • 00:11:26.041 --> 00:11:28.077
  • And now his wife sends a message from out of nowhere
  • 00:11:28.077 --> 00:11:30.513
  • Saying the same thing, adding that she had suffered much
  • 00:11:30.513 --> 00:11:33.649
  • In a dream she'd had.
  • 00:11:33.649 --> 00:11:34.784
  • A dream had caused her great anguish.
  • 00:11:34.784 --> 00:11:37.520
  • God was appealing to pilate every way he could,
  • 00:11:37.520 --> 00:11:41.323
  • Even through his wife, who had zero connection
  • 00:11:41.323 --> 00:11:44.026
  • To what was unfolding.
  • 00:11:44.026 --> 00:11:45.728
  • God was giving pilate the same opportunity
  • 00:11:45.728 --> 00:11:47.763
  • He gave nebuchadnezzar and pharaoh.
  • 00:11:47.763 --> 00:11:50.432
  • Pilate could have been a saved man.
  • 00:11:50.432 --> 00:11:54.103
  • And if he'd yielded to the promptings begging him
  • 00:11:54.103 --> 00:11:56.272
  • To do the right thing, pilate would not have been responsible
  • 00:11:56.272 --> 00:11:59.742
  • For sending the son of god to his death.
  • 00:11:59.742 --> 00:12:03.445
  • How many times do you think that happens to people?
  • 00:12:03.445 --> 00:12:05.948
  • Someone planning a crime and a voice inside is saying,
  • 00:12:05.948 --> 00:12:08.818
  • "you shouldn't do this. this is not right.
  • 00:12:08.818 --> 00:12:10.653
  • This isn't how you were raised."
  • 00:12:10.653 --> 00:12:12.421
  • That person in a bar or a restaurant or an office,
  • 00:12:12.421 --> 00:12:15.224
  • Everyone's having fun, but then they remember their spouse,
  • 00:12:15.224 --> 00:12:18.828
  • And conscience says, or the holy spirit says,
  • 00:12:18.828 --> 00:12:22.298
  • "don't let this escalate. get out of here while you can."
  • 00:12:22.298 --> 00:12:25.601
  • That's god speaking, trying to save that person.
  • 00:12:25.601 --> 00:12:28.737
  • A friend says, "we're going to rob a store."
  • 00:12:28.737 --> 00:12:30.506
  • That voice says, "bad idea, don't do it."
  • 00:12:30.506 --> 00:12:33.075
  • But the young man goes along, doesn't mean any real harm.
  • 00:12:33.075 --> 00:12:35.978
  • No one's going to get hurt. he's just along for the thrill.
  • 00:12:35.978 --> 00:12:39.048
  • God is saying, "don't do this. you know better.
  • 00:12:39.048 --> 00:12:42.418
  • I can get you out of this."
  • 00:12:42.418 --> 00:12:44.186
  • And then it all goes bad, and that young man is sitting
  • 00:12:44.186 --> 00:12:47.656
  • In a cell that will be his home for the rest of his life,
  • 00:12:47.656 --> 00:12:51.894
  • Even though his conscience, his better judgment,
  • 00:12:51.894 --> 00:12:55.531
  • Even though god told him plainly,
  • 00:12:55.531 --> 00:12:59.301
  • "you don't want to do this."
  • 00:12:59.301 --> 00:13:01.637
  • In june of 2024, some men outside a nightclub
  • 00:13:01.637 --> 00:13:05.608
  • In canberra, australia, got into a bit of a dispute--
  • 00:13:05.608 --> 00:13:09.445
  • Nothing unusual for a nightclub.
  • 00:13:09.445 --> 00:13:11.780
  • While one man was walking away, he was punched.
  • 00:13:11.780 --> 00:13:15.284
  • One punch.
  • 00:13:15.284 --> 00:13:16.719
  • The man who was on the receiving end, a father of four,
  • 00:13:16.719 --> 00:13:20.489
  • Is now living with an irreversible brain injury,
  • 00:13:20.489 --> 00:13:22.591
  • While the 21-year-old who threw the punch
  • 00:13:22.591 --> 00:13:25.261
  • Was sentenced to up to six years in prison.
  • 00:13:25.261 --> 00:13:28.130
  • At some stage, both men thought about just walking away.
  • 00:13:28.130 --> 00:13:32.368
  • One did, but one did not, and then?
  • 00:13:32.368 --> 00:13:37.740
  • A british mother recently buried her 17-year-old son
  • 00:13:37.740 --> 00:13:40.576
  • After he made an error of judgment.
  • 00:13:40.576 --> 00:13:42.511
  • She had warned him not to use drugs.
  • 00:13:42.511 --> 00:13:45.214
  • He assured her he wouldn't.
  • 00:13:45.214 --> 00:13:47.616
  • But then he took narcotics while drinking.
  • 00:13:47.616 --> 00:13:50.920
  • Just once, and the result was fatal.
  • 00:13:50.920 --> 00:13:54.390
  • He knew, but instead of following the voice of reason,
  • 00:13:54.390 --> 00:13:58.560
  • He gave in to temptation,
  • 00:13:58.560 --> 00:14:00.329
  • And what happened in a moment can never be undone.
  • 00:14:00.329 --> 00:14:05.668
  • Everyone has had that experience to some degree.
  • 00:14:05.668 --> 00:14:09.038
  • It might be a website you should steer clear of
  • 00:14:09.038 --> 00:14:11.440
  • Or an angry word that you think the other person
  • 00:14:11.440 --> 00:14:13.742
  • Deserved to hear.
  • 00:14:13.742 --> 00:14:15.210
  • Something was saying, "don't do it."
  • 00:14:15.210 --> 00:14:17.346
  • And yet you did, and it can't be taken back.
  • 00:14:17.346 --> 00:14:19.815
  • And someone's going to have to live with the consequences
  • 00:14:19.815 --> 00:14:22.117
  • Of those actions for the rest of their life.
  • 00:14:22.117 --> 00:14:25.788
  • You know something?
  • 00:14:25.788 --> 00:14:27.222
  • It's always better to yield to god.
  • 00:14:28.190 --> 00:14:31.427
  • I want to encourage you to surrender
  • 00:14:31.427 --> 00:14:33.228
  • When god speaks to your heart.
  • 00:14:33.228 --> 00:14:35.331
  • Let god's will be done in your life.
  • 00:14:35.331 --> 00:14:40.002
  • The people knew nothing about what was going on
  • 00:14:40.002 --> 00:14:42.304
  • In the heart of pilate.
  • 00:14:42.304 --> 00:14:43.739
  • "the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitudes
  • 00:14:43.739 --> 00:14:46.375
  • "that they should ask for barabbas and destroy jesus.
  • 00:14:46.375 --> 00:14:49.611
  • "the governor answered and said to them,
  • 00:14:49.611 --> 00:14:51.380
  • "'which of the two do you want me to release to you?'
  • 00:14:51.380 --> 00:14:53.949
  • They said, 'barabbas!'"
  • 00:14:53.949 --> 00:14:56.452
  • Notice what's going on?
  • 00:14:56.452 --> 00:14:57.786
  • Pilate is trying to release jesus.
  • 00:14:57.786 --> 00:15:00.489
  • He's hoping the people would have a change of heart,
  • 00:15:00.489 --> 00:15:02.891
  • But they chose a murderer and rejected a messiah.
  • 00:15:02.891 --> 00:15:07.596
  • Luke writes, "pilate gave sentence
  • 00:15:07.596 --> 00:15:10.366
  • That it should be as they requested."
  • 00:15:10.366 --> 00:15:12.301
  • Pilate could simply have chosen to be a leader and lead.
  • 00:15:12.301 --> 00:15:16.605
  • It was his job, as the person in authority, to do the right thing
  • 00:15:16.605 --> 00:15:20.409
  • And not be pushed around by the people he governed.
  • 00:15:20.409 --> 00:15:23.412
  • But pilate was weak.
  • 00:15:23.412 --> 00:15:25.914
  • He even tried to get out of the whole situation
  • 00:15:25.914 --> 00:15:28.083
  • By having jesus sent to herod and make it herod's problem,
  • 00:15:28.083 --> 00:15:32.521
  • Only for herod to send jesus back.
  • 00:15:32.521 --> 00:15:35.657
  • When he needed backbone, pilate wilted.
  • 00:15:35.657 --> 00:15:40.029
  • You might have had that experience, too.
  • 00:15:40.029 --> 00:15:41.830
  • When temptation comes, your reservoir of strength is small,
  • 00:15:41.830 --> 00:15:46.135
  • And you say that awful thing, or you lash out,
  • 00:15:46.135 --> 00:15:48.637
  • Or you're critical or dishonest or immoral.
  • 00:15:48.637 --> 00:15:51.807
  • But a follower of jesus can have strength in moments like that.
  • 00:15:51.807 --> 00:15:56.478
  • I'll tell you how.
  • 00:15:56.478 --> 00:15:57.813
  • Crumbling like pilate did is not really the result
  • 00:15:57.813 --> 00:16:01.784
  • Of what happens in the moment.
  • 00:16:01.784 --> 00:16:03.786
  • Instead, it's the result of what has happened over time.
  • 00:16:03.786 --> 00:16:07.456
  • If you're connecting with god on a daily basis,
  • 00:16:07.456 --> 00:16:10.659
  • You are far less likely to fold in the face of temptation.
  • 00:16:10.659 --> 00:16:15.397
  • Your daily devotional time strengthens you for those times
  • 00:16:15.397 --> 00:16:18.667
  • Of strong temptation.
  • 00:16:18.667 --> 00:16:20.402
  • I was digging something out of the ground in my yard recently,
  • 00:16:20.402 --> 00:16:22.905
  • And it was stubborn, really hard to shift.
  • 00:16:22.905 --> 00:16:26.508
  • And that's because it had a root system that went deep.
  • 00:16:26.508 --> 00:16:30.279
  • If you put down deep roots and fasten them around jesus,
  • 00:16:30.279 --> 00:16:35.350
  • Temptation won't be able to easily push you over.
  • 00:16:35.350 --> 00:16:39.888
  • Prayer puts down roots.
  • 00:16:39.888 --> 00:16:41.890
  • Reading the bible puts down roots.
  • 00:16:41.890 --> 00:16:44.593
  • Grow your relationship with god today and tomorrow
  • 00:16:44.593 --> 00:16:48.263
  • And the day after, and when temptation presses in,
  • 00:16:48.263 --> 00:16:51.934
  • You won't easily be uprooted
  • 00:16:51.934 --> 00:16:53.669
  • Because the roots of your faith go down deep.
  • 00:16:53.669 --> 00:16:58.807
  • Now, "pilate said to them, 'what then shall i do
  • 00:16:58.807 --> 00:17:01.810
  • With jesus who is called christ?'"
  • 00:17:01.810 --> 00:17:05.447
  • And "they all said to him,
  • 00:17:05.447 --> 00:17:08.117
  • 'let him be crucified!'"
  • 00:17:08.117 --> 00:17:12.121
  • He tried again. in his mind he's thinking
  • 00:17:12.121 --> 00:17:14.957
  • These good religious people surely wouldn't want to harm
  • 00:17:14.957 --> 00:17:18.026
  • An obviously innocent man.
  • 00:17:18.026 --> 00:17:20.696
  • Pilate was dead wrong.
  • 00:17:20.696 --> 00:17:22.431
  • "from then on pilate sought to release him,
  • 00:17:22.431 --> 00:17:26.235
  • "but the jews cried out, saying, 'if you let this man go,
  • 00:17:26.235 --> 00:17:29.505
  • "'you are not caesar's friend.
  • 00:17:29.505 --> 00:17:31.373
  • Whoever makes himself a king speaks against caesar.'"
  • 00:17:31.373 --> 00:17:35.611
  • So you see what pushed pilate over the line?
  • 00:17:35.611 --> 00:17:38.514
  • He was so concerned about his job,
  • 00:17:38.514 --> 00:17:40.782
  • So concerned about his reputation with his boss
  • 00:17:40.782 --> 00:17:43.418
  • That he was prepared to allow a gross miscarriage of justice.
  • 00:17:43.418 --> 00:17:48.790
  • So what influences you?
  • 00:17:48.790 --> 00:17:51.527
  • There are people who would follow jesus,
  • 00:17:51.527 --> 00:17:53.795
  • But they're concerned about what others would think.
  • 00:17:53.795 --> 00:17:56.565
  • Or they're concerned about their livelihood.
  • 00:17:56.565 --> 00:17:58.734
  • But that's not how faith works.
  • 00:17:58.734 --> 00:18:01.069
  • Abraham followed god, not knowing where he was going.
  • 00:18:01.069 --> 00:18:04.439
  • James and john followed jesus, leaving their jobs behind.
  • 00:18:04.439 --> 00:18:08.310
  • Shadrach, meshach, and abednego were faithful,
  • 00:18:08.310 --> 00:18:10.646
  • Believing it would cost them their lives.
  • 00:18:10.646 --> 00:18:13.215
  • And in each case, god blessed them for their faithfulness.
  • 00:18:13.215 --> 00:18:19.588
  • You can't do the right thing for god and be worse off.
  • 00:18:19.588 --> 00:18:23.225
  • So don't worry about what people think or how they react
  • 00:18:23.225 --> 00:18:27.229
  • Or what they say.
  • 00:18:27.229 --> 00:18:29.331

  • 00:18:37.072 --> 00:18:40.509

  • 00:18:40.509 --> 00:18:43.946
  • "'why, what evil has he done?' but they cried out all the more,
  • 00:18:43.946 --> 00:18:48.617
  • Saying, 'let him be crucified!'"
  • 00:18:48.617 --> 00:18:52.054
  • The people ignore his appeal: "what evil has he done?"

  • They don't even want to go there.
  • 00:18:56.191 --> 00:18:57.526
  • They just want him gone.

  • 00:19:00.195 --> 00:19:03.232
  • And that the life of jesus is hanging in the balance.
