  • 00:05:26.509 --> 00:05:31.881
  • Friday was the day of pain, and jesus experienced pain at the

  • Ultimate level.
  • 00:05:36.719 --> 00:05:38.054
  • Let me explain.
  • 00:05:38.054 --> 00:05:39.422
  • First, he experienced physical pain.
  • 00:05:39.422 --> 00:05:41.524
  • The bible tells us that he was beaten.
  • 00:05:41.524 --> 00:05:43.760
  • The bible tells us that he was whipped, that he was wounded,
  • 00:05:43.760 --> 00:05:47.730
  • That he was spit on, that he was slapped, that they plucked out
  • 00:05:47.730 --> 00:05:51.667
  • His beard just to be mean, that they stuck a crown of thorns
  • 00:05:51.667 --> 00:05:55.338
  • Down into his skull, that he was scourged, and what a scourging
  • 00:05:55.338 --> 00:05:59.976
  • Is different than just a whipping.
  • 00:05:59.976 --> 00:06:01.878
  • It's a long whip with a kind of a cat of nine tails at the end
  • 00:06:01.878 --> 00:06:06.449
  • Of it, and they would tie little bits of bone, rock, and glass at
  • 00:06:06.449 --> 00:06:10.052
  • The end, so that every time they would whip you, it would tear at
  • 00:06:10.052 --> 00:06:13.689
  • Your back.
  • 00:06:13.689 --> 00:06:15.391
  • So 9 times 40 stripes, you can figure the number of wounds that
  • 00:06:15.391 --> 00:06:19.262
  • Were on jesus's back before he went to the cross, and then they
  • 00:06:19.262 --> 00:06:23.800
  • Took him, and without sleep, without food, without water,
  • 00:06:23.800 --> 00:06:28.738
  • He's been up all night, and they take and they nail him to a
  • 00:06:28.738 --> 00:06:32.241
  • Cross, which is one of the worst forms of torture you
  • 00:06:32.241 --> 00:06:34.377
  • Can imagine.
  • 00:06:34.377 --> 00:06:35.711
  • I don't have time to get into it, the explanation of it, but
  • 00:06:35.711 --> 00:06:38.514
  • The death of crucifixion is death by suffocation, and that's
  • 00:06:38.514 --> 00:06:41.918
  • Why they would often break the bones of your legs, so you
  • 00:06:41.918 --> 00:06:45.655
  • Couldn't stand up anymore and you couldn't breathe anymore.
  • 00:06:45.655 --> 00:06:49.125
  • Jesus experienced the ultimate in physical pain, but he also
  • 00:06:49.125 --> 00:06:53.729
  • Experienced the ultimate in emotional pain and psychological
  • 00:06:53.729 --> 00:06:59.068
  • Pain, because the death on the cross was a death
  • 00:06:59.068 --> 00:07:02.371
  • By humiliation.
  • 00:07:02.371 --> 00:07:03.840
  • How'd you like to be stripped naked and nailed like this, and
  • 00:07:03.840 --> 00:07:07.443
  • Then let people watch you die?
  • 00:07:07.443 --> 00:07:09.946
  • It was a death of humiliation, a death of degradation, a death
  • 00:07:09.946 --> 00:07:15.084
  • Of shame.
  • 00:07:15.084 --> 00:07:16.552
  • He went through the pain of rejection, he went through the
  • 00:07:16.552 --> 00:07:19.822
  • Pain of betrayal, and many of you know the pain that
  • 00:07:19.822 --> 00:07:22.859
  • That causes.
  • 00:07:22.859 --> 00:07:24.227
  • He experienced that.
  • 00:07:24.227 --> 00:07:25.828
  • But then there was another level of pain that none of us have
  • 00:07:25.828 --> 00:07:28.297
  • Ever experienced to his degree, and that is spiritual pain,
  • 00:07:28.297 --> 00:07:33.436
  • Because jesus died on the cross for all the sins of mankind,
  • 00:07:33.436 --> 00:07:37.039
  • Which means he took the guilt of every evil crime and every ugly
  • 00:07:37.039 --> 00:07:42.445
  • Sin throughout history, all that guilt on him at one point, and
  • 00:07:42.445 --> 00:07:47.517
  • So he takes--you know how bad you feel if you feel guilty over
  • 00:07:47.517 --> 00:07:51.621
  • One thing?
  • 00:07:51.621 --> 00:07:53.222
  • How would you like to carry the guilt of every murder, every

  • Rape, every child molestation, the holocaust, every genocide,
  • 00:07:58.194 --> 00:08:06.102
  • Every evil thing, every inhumanity to man?
  • 00:08:06.102 --> 00:08:09.505
  • He took all of that guilt on himself, and he went through the
  • 00:08:09.505 --> 00:08:13.643
  • Hell of separation from god when he cries out on the cross, "my
  • 00:08:13.643 --> 00:08:17.713
  • God, my god, why have you forsaken me."
  • 00:08:17.713 --> 00:08:21.183
  • Let me show you a couple of verses from the bible up here on

  • 00:08:23.219 --> 00:08:24.587
  • The bible says in hebrews 4, "(jesus)
  • 00:08:24.587 --> 00:08:27.223
  • Understands our weaknesses, for he faced all the same trials and
  • 00:08:27.223 --> 00:08:32.562
  • Temptations we do, yet he never sinned."
  • 00:08:32.562 --> 00:08:36.065
  • And the bible says in hebrews 2, "since jesus went through
  • 00:08:36.065 --> 00:08:40.036
  • Suffering and temptation, he knows what it's like when we
  • 00:08:40.036 --> 00:08:44.874
  • Suffer and are tempted, and," here's the key, "he is able to
  • 00:08:44.874 --> 00:08:49.979
  • Help us."
  • 00:08:49.979 --> 00:08:51.314
  • He knows the pattern, the pathway, and he has the power to
  • 00:08:51.314 --> 00:08:55.184
  • Get through the fridays and the saturdays, the days of pain and
  • 00:08:55.184 --> 00:08:59.455
  • The days of confusion, in your life.
  • 00:08:59.455 --> 00:09:03.626
  • So what do you do in your days of pain?
  • 00:09:03.626 --> 00:09:08.531
  • You do the two things that jesus did on the last day of his life.
  • 00:09:08.531 --> 00:09:12.868
  • You need to write these down.
  • 00:09:12.868 --> 00:09:14.670
  • The two things that jesus did, and he modeled for us to do, you
  • 00:09:14.670 --> 00:09:18.641
  • Follow his example.
  • 00:09:18.641 --> 00:09:20.009
  • Number one, this may surprise you, reach out to friends.
  • 00:09:20.009 --> 00:09:24.981
  • That's the first thing jesus did.
  • 00:09:24.981 --> 00:09:27.350
  • Their presence can be helpful in your life in sharing your pain.
  • 00:09:27.350 --> 00:09:32.421
  • On the night that jesus knew he was gonna be arrested, tortured,
  • 00:09:32.421 --> 00:09:36.559
  • And executed, the last thing he did on planet earth was gather
  • 00:09:36.559 --> 00:09:41.030
  • His closest friends together and say, "i need you guys to just
  • 00:09:41.030 --> 00:09:44.233
  • Hang out with me.
  • 00:09:44.233 --> 00:09:45.835
  • I don't need any sermons, i don't need any speeches.
  • 00:09:45.835 --> 00:09:48.137

  • Now, gethsemane is an olive grove on the mount of olives,
  • 00:10:02.351 --> 00:10:07.490
  • And so it would--really, you could call it an olive garden,
  • 00:10:07.490 --> 00:10:10.292
  • But that's a restaurant, so we'll just call it a, we'll call
  • 00:10:10.292 --> 00:10:14.263
  • It a grove of olives, and this is where jesus regularly went to
