  • I want to share with you why I believe you do.
  • 00:00:04.270 --> 00:00:07.270
  • The (UN)QUALIFIED series is for every person
  • 00:00:07.280 --> 00:00:10.200
  • who's tired of dealing with the frustration
  • 00:00:10.210 --> 00:00:12.120
  • and insecurity of feeling inadequate
  • 00:00:12.130 --> 00:00:15.090
  • and ready to discover that God still uses
  • 00:00:15.100 --> 00:00:17.290
  • broken people to do big things.
  • 00:00:18.000 --> 00:00:20.290
  • (female announcer) They are the heroes of the Bible.
  • 00:00:21.000 --> 00:00:23.090
  • They are immortalized, sanctified, revered.
  • 00:00:23.100 --> 00:00:27.220
  • They were God's chosen people, the founders of the church.
  • 00:00:27.230 --> 00:00:32.020
  • What were their qualifications?
  • 00:00:32.030 --> 00:00:34.090
  • A speech impediment.
  • 00:00:34.100 --> 00:00:35.290
  • A denial of faith.
  • 00:00:36.000 --> 00:00:38.010
  • An affair.
  • 00:00:38.020 --> 00:00:39.240
  • Who were these heroes?
  • 00:00:39.250 --> 00:00:41.220
  • A murderer.
  • 00:00:41.230 --> 00:00:43.070
  • A prostitute.
  • 00:00:43.080 --> 00:00:44.250
  • A liar and a schemer.
  • 00:00:44.260 --> 00:00:47.050
  • In the eyes of the world, they were unqualified.
  • 00:00:47.060 --> 00:00:49.270
  • But God has a history of using broken people to do big things.
  • 00:00:49.280 --> 00:00:54.160
  • And he still does it today.
  • 00:00:54.170 --> 00:00:57.020
  • (Steven Furtick) Teaching God's Word
  • 00:01:01.080 --> 00:01:02.270
  • and preaching on a regular basis is--
  • 00:01:02.280 --> 00:01:06.060
  • people say awkward things to you sometimes after you preach.
  • 00:01:06.070 --> 00:01:11.090
  • One of the things that I've told everybody that's on my team
  • 00:01:11.100 --> 00:01:14.220
  • that I never want them to say again is my least favorite thing
  • 00:01:14.230 --> 00:01:18.200
  • that people will ask me after I preach.
  • 00:01:18.210 --> 00:01:22.050
  • And if you have a pastor if you go to church,
  • 00:01:22.060 --> 00:01:24.190
  • don't ask the preacher this after he preaches.
  • 00:01:24.200 --> 00:01:26.210
  • This is like the worst thing you can ask him or her.
  • 00:01:26.220 --> 00:01:28.270
  • And here's the question, they'll say,
  • 00:01:28.280 --> 00:01:31.160
  • "So, how did you feel about that?"
  • 00:01:31.170 --> 00:01:37.060
  • Which, to me, I mean, you were in the same sermon I was.
  • 00:01:37.070 --> 00:01:41.190
  • I felt--I felt pretty good about it until you asked me.
  • 00:01:41.200 --> 00:01:46.280
  • Should I not?
  • 00:01:46.290 --> 00:01:48.140
  • I thought--I thought it was all right.
  • 00:01:48.150 --> 00:01:50.000
  • Is there something I need to know?"
  • 00:01:50.010 --> 00:01:51.120
  • It's just like it's the worst question ever.
  • 00:01:51.130 --> 00:01:53.020
  • And it's a bad question on multiple levels.
  • 00:01:53.030 --> 00:01:54.140
  • Number one, you should start with,
  • 00:01:54.150 --> 00:01:56.020
  • "I thought that was awesome, how did you feel about it?"
  • 00:01:56.030 --> 00:01:59.030
  • Even just that tag at the beginning,
  • 00:01:59.040 --> 00:02:00.240
  • that would help so much.
  • 00:02:00.250 --> 00:02:02.130
  • Like, "Well, to me, that was amazing.
  • 00:02:02.140 --> 00:02:04.060
  • Did you also find it amazing?"
  • 00:02:04.070 --> 00:02:06.090
  • You know, lie to me.
  • 00:02:06.100 --> 00:02:07.210
  • Even if you don't think it's amazing,
  • 00:02:07.220 --> 00:02:09.040
  • just tell me it was.
  • 00:02:09.050 --> 00:02:10.190
  • I have a fragile ego.
  • 00:02:10.200 --> 00:02:12.030
  • But another reason that I hate the question,
  • 00:02:12.040 --> 00:02:13.170
  • "How did you feel about it?"
  • 00:02:13.180 --> 00:02:15.010
  • is because when you're doing something
  • 00:02:15.020 --> 00:02:16.200
  • that's kind of ambiguous or nebulous like ministry,
  • 00:02:16.210 --> 00:02:19.070
  • where you can't always see the effect of it right away,
  • 00:02:19.080 --> 00:02:22.190
  • it's hard to know how to feel about it.
  • 00:02:22.200 --> 00:02:26.070
  • You know, if it was a sport,
  • 00:02:26.080 --> 00:02:28.110
  • and somebody won and somebody lost,
  • 00:02:28.120 --> 00:02:30.160
  • "How do you feel about it?" is easy to answer.
  • 00:02:30.170 --> 00:02:33.020
  • "Well, we lost, I hate it. We won, I feel great."
  • 00:02:33.030 --> 00:02:36.070
  • But when you're doing something like preaching,
  • 00:02:36.080 --> 00:02:39.010
  • and I think a lot of areas of life are like this,
  • 00:02:39.020 --> 00:02:41.030
  • not just preaching, but growing spiritually,
  • 00:02:41.040 --> 00:02:44.090
  • parenting, trying to be a good husband
  • 00:02:44.100 --> 00:02:47.070
  • or a good wife or a better person,
  • 00:02:47.080 --> 00:02:50.230
  • it's kind of hard to measure certain things.
  • 00:02:50.240 --> 00:02:54.020
  • So, when you say, "How did you feel about that sermon?"
  • 00:02:54.030 --> 00:02:56.160
  • and in some ways I want to say,
  • 00:02:56.170 --> 00:02:58.060
  • "I don't know, we'll see.
  • 00:02:58.070 --> 00:02:59.220
  • "I mean, I preached about giving.
  • 00:02:59.230 --> 00:03:01.080
  • "We'll see if the people give any more.
  • 00:03:01.090 --> 00:03:03.090
  • "They politely listened, but we'll have to see
  • 00:03:03.100 --> 00:03:05.170
  • "if they took action.
  • 00:03:05.180 --> 00:03:07.010
  • I preached about serving, we'll see if the people serve more."
  • 00:03:07.020 --> 00:03:10.190
  • It's hard to--it's hard to measure certain things.
  • 00:03:10.200 --> 00:03:14.080
  • And the world has a system of measurement.
  • 00:03:14.090 --> 00:03:16.170
  • We've been talking about this a lot in this teaching series
  • 00:03:16.180 --> 00:03:19.250
  • is that the world's measurement system is often
  • 00:03:19.260 --> 00:03:23.210
  • very different than heaven's measurement system.
  • 00:03:23.220 --> 00:03:26.200
  • The way humans measure and the way heaven measures
  • 00:03:26.210 --> 00:03:29.050
  • can be pretty different.
  • 00:03:29.060 --> 00:03:31.170
  • And so I want to incite a rebellion.
  • 00:03:31.180 --> 00:03:35.170
  • I know that's a strong call to action, but I mean it.
  • 00:03:35.180 --> 00:03:38.150
  • I want to recite--
  • 00:03:38.160 --> 00:03:39.280
  • incite a rebellion in your heart
  • 00:03:39.290 --> 00:03:42.030
  • against the world's measurement system,
  • 00:03:42.040 --> 00:03:45.240
  • of how you see yourself and how you qualify yourself.
  • 00:03:45.250 --> 00:03:48.160
  • And you know, you should be able to do this
  • 00:03:48.170 --> 00:03:50.200
  • if you're an American.
  • 00:03:50.210 --> 00:03:52.070
  • I mean, we've been rebelling
  • 00:03:52.080 --> 00:03:53.230
  • against the metric system for decades.
  • 00:03:53.240 --> 00:03:58.050
  • Do you not know that we have been approved
  • 00:03:58.060 --> 00:04:00.230
  • to use the metric system now for decades
  • 00:04:00.240 --> 00:04:03.150
  • as our official system of measurement?
  • 00:04:03.160 --> 00:04:05.240
  • But we won't do it.
  • 00:04:05.250 --> 00:04:07.110
  • We won't do it.
  • 00:04:07.120 --> 00:04:08.250
  • We're not--we don't--we want nothing to do with your meters.
  • 00:04:08.260 --> 00:04:12.030
  • You can have your meters.
  • 00:04:12.040 --> 00:04:15.100
  • We just made a decision we're not going to--
  • 00:04:15.110 --> 00:04:16.280
  • we're not going to measure the way
  • 00:04:16.290 --> 00:04:18.190
  • that every other developing country measures.
  • 00:04:18.200 --> 00:04:20.030
  • We're not going to do it.
  • 00:04:20.040 --> 00:04:21.130
  • We're not going to do it.
  • 00:04:21.140 --> 00:04:22.210
  • And you know, I'm using that humorously,
  • 00:04:22.220 --> 00:04:24.060
  • but sometimes you got to make up your mind
  • 00:04:24.070 --> 00:04:26.130
  • as a citizen of the kingdom of God,
  • 00:04:26.140 --> 00:04:28.130
  • as a child of God, as somebody who lives under a different law,
  • 00:04:28.140 --> 00:04:32.220
  • the law of grace, to say, "I'm not going to do it.
  • 00:04:32.230 --> 00:04:35.230
  • I'm not going to measure myself the way I'm told to measure.
  • 00:04:35.240 --> 00:04:39.060
  • I'm not going to measure--"
  • 00:04:39.070 --> 00:04:40.260
  • I want to--I want to talk a little bit about
  • 00:04:40.270 --> 00:04:42.180
  • measuring more in this session
  • 00:04:42.190 --> 00:04:45.040
  • because the Bible says in Ephesians 3:20--
  • 00:04:45.050 --> 00:04:47.090
  • and man, this is my verse.
  • 00:04:47.100 --> 00:04:49.190
  • If there's one verse that describes
  • 00:04:49.200 --> 00:04:52.100
  • how I want to live my life
  • 00:04:52.110 --> 00:04:53.250
  • and what I want to believe God for,
  • 00:04:53.260 --> 00:04:55.120
  • I go to go to Ephesians 3:20
  • 00:04:55.130 --> 00:04:57.020
  • because in Ephesians 3:20, Paul is talking about--
  • 00:04:57.030 --> 00:05:00.210
  • well, before he gets to this verse,
  • 00:05:00.220 --> 00:05:02.090
  • he's saying how high and how long
  • 00:05:02.100 --> 00:05:04.000
  • and how wide and how deep is the love of Christ.
  • 00:05:04.010 --> 00:05:06.150
  • He's saying it's beyond comprehension,
  • 00:05:06.160 --> 00:05:08.240
  • it's beyond measurement.
  • 00:05:08.250 --> 00:05:10.100
  • You can't see it with your eyes.
  • 00:05:10.110 --> 00:05:11.200
  • You can't even really express it with your mouth.
  • 00:05:11.210 --> 00:05:13.110
  • And in some ways, you can't know it with your heart
  • 00:05:13.120 --> 00:05:15.090
  • how much God loves you
  • 00:05:15.100 --> 00:05:16.200
  • and how great his love is through you and to you.
  • 00:05:16.210 --> 00:05:19.090
  • And after he gets done saying all that, he says,
  • 00:05:19.100 --> 00:05:21.040
  • "And now unto him who is able to do--"
  • 00:05:21.050 --> 00:05:23.270
  • listen to his word choice--
  • 00:05:23.280 --> 00:05:25.270
  • "immeasurably more than we can ask or imagine,
  • 00:05:25.280 --> 00:05:29.290
  • according to his power that works in us in unseen places,
  • 00:05:30.000 --> 00:05:34.290
  • to him be glory through Christ Jesus and the church,
  • 00:05:35.000 --> 00:05:36.220
  • now and forever."
  • 00:05:36.230 --> 00:05:38.060
  • That's verse 21,
  • 00:05:38.070 --> 00:05:39.160
  • but verse 20 says, "Immeasurably more."
  • 00:05:39.170 --> 00:05:42.220
  • So, how do we measure more?
  • 00:05:42.230 --> 00:05:45.140
  • If it's immeasurable, I believe God wants us to grow.
  • 00:05:45.150 --> 00:05:49.130
  • I believe God is into measurement.
  • 00:05:49.140 --> 00:05:51.220
  • And as a matter of fact, I can prove it scripturally.
  • 00:05:51.230 --> 00:05:54.180
  • If you go to the last book of the Bible--
  • 00:05:54.190 --> 00:05:57.020
  • you don't have to flip there now.
  • 00:05:57.030 --> 00:05:58.240
  • Take my word for it, it's Revelation 21,
  • 00:05:58.250 --> 00:06:00.230
  • I think around verse 17
  • 00:06:00.240 --> 00:06:03.130
  • where the new Jerusalem is being measured.
  • 00:06:03.140 --> 00:06:06.150
  • It says something kind of interesting, though.
  • 00:06:06.160 --> 00:06:08.080
  • It says that they measured the walls
  • 00:06:08.090 --> 00:06:11.260
  • using human measurement,
  • 00:06:11.270 --> 00:06:13.240
  • and it was as wide as it was long,
  • 00:06:13.250 --> 00:06:16.040
  • as long as it was wide.
  • 00:06:16.050 --> 00:06:17.260
  • So, it was perfect dimensions because everything
  • 00:06:17.270 --> 00:06:20.050
  • that God builds, he builds according to specification.
  • 00:06:20.060 --> 00:06:23.220
  • That's true of your life as well.
  • 00:06:23.230 --> 00:06:26.130
  • What God built, he built it by design.
  • 00:06:26.140 --> 00:06:29.030
  • And the dimensions of the design are perfect for the purpose
  • 00:06:29.040 --> 00:06:32.240
  • that he desires for that thing or that purpose to serve.
  • 00:06:32.250 --> 00:06:35.230
  • That's why the psalmist said,
  • 00:06:35.240 --> 00:06:37.150
  • "I'm fearfully and wonderfully made."
  • 00:06:37.160 --> 00:06:39.030
  • God made me just right.
  • 00:06:39.040 --> 00:06:41.180
  • You're a masterpiece made in God's image.
  • 00:06:41.190 --> 00:06:44.000
  • Doesn't make junk.
  • 00:06:44.010 --> 00:06:45.230
  • But then it says something interesting,
  • 00:06:45.240 --> 00:06:47.100
  • that after the walls were measured
  • 00:06:47.110 --> 00:06:49.000
  • using human measurement, using the measure of a man,
  • 00:06:49.010 --> 00:06:53.070
  • the writer says, that then the walls were found
  • 00:06:53.080 --> 00:06:56.130
  • to be made of jasper.
  • 00:06:56.140 --> 00:06:59.160
  • Now, that's interesting, because human measurement
  • 00:06:59.170 --> 00:07:01.240
  • measures how long it is, how wide it is,
  • 00:07:01.250 --> 00:07:05.160
  • but any time you see jasper in the Scripture,
  • 00:07:05.170 --> 00:07:08.040
  • it represents glory.
  • 00:07:08.050 --> 00:07:10.190
  • And I wonder if this isn't symbolic.
  • 00:07:10.200 --> 00:07:12.100
  • You know, so much of the Bible
  • 00:07:12.110 --> 00:07:14.110
  • and particularly the book of Revelation is symbolic.
  • 00:07:14.120 --> 00:07:17.020
  • And so, I think maybe God is trying to show us
  • 00:07:17.030 --> 00:07:19.220
  • that sometimes we need to measure not just how long
  • 00:07:19.230 --> 00:07:23.070
  • or wide or big or fast something is,
  • 00:07:23.080 --> 00:07:27.100
  • but what is it made of?
  • 00:07:27.110 --> 00:07:29.200

  • 00:07:44.000 --> 00:07:47.000
  • (Steven) Now, I know this is an Old Testament story,
  • 00:07:49.080 --> 00:07:52.030
  • but maybe it'll relate to your life today,
  • 00:07:52.040 --> 00:07:55.250
  • that when Israel was sizing herself up as a nation
  • 00:07:55.260 --> 00:08:00.150
  • and they compared themselves to all the other nations,
  • 00:08:00.160 --> 00:08:03.090
  • one thing that discouraged them is
  • 00:08:03.100 --> 00:08:05.200
  • that they didn't have a king.
  • 00:08:05.210 --> 00:08:08.150
  • All the other nations had a king to lead them into battle.
  • 00:08:08.160 --> 00:08:13.010
  • God wanted to be the king of Israel,
  • 00:08:13.020 --> 00:08:16.120
  • he wanted to be the king of his people,
  • 00:08:16.130 --> 00:08:19.020
  • but they wanted a visible king because we always want
  • 00:08:19.030 --> 00:08:21.120
  • something to trust in that we can see.
  • 00:08:21.130 --> 00:08:24.100
  • That's what idolatry is, is trying to trust in something
  • 00:08:24.110 --> 00:08:27.040
  • that I can perceive with my senses rather than God,
  • 00:08:27.050 --> 00:08:30.140
  • whom I have to believe by faith.
  • 00:08:30.150 --> 00:08:33.030
  • So, they wanted a king, so they picked out a king,
  • 00:08:33.040 --> 00:08:37.010
  • God gave them a king.
  • 00:08:37.020 --> 00:08:38.170
  • Sometimes God will give you what you ask for,
  • 00:08:38.180 --> 00:08:40.260
  • even if it's not what's best for you
  • 00:08:40.270 --> 00:08:43.070
  • because he's given you a will.
  • 00:08:43.080 --> 00:08:45.030
  • And they got this king, his name was Saul.
  • 00:08:45.040 --> 00:08:47.080
  • Now, let me tell you something about Saul.
  • 00:08:47.090 --> 00:08:50.030
  • Saul was handsome, and Saul was tall.
  • 00:08:50.040 --> 00:08:56.290
  • The Bible says he was a head above everybody else.
  • 00:08:57.000 --> 00:09:00.220
  • He was a head above, a cut above.
  • 00:09:00.230 --> 00:09:03.230
  • Saul, tall Saul.
  • 00:09:03.240 --> 00:09:06.070
  • Better call Saul.
  • 00:09:06.080 --> 00:09:07.260
  • Better call tall Saul.
  • 00:09:07.270 --> 00:09:09.250
  • They called Saul to be their king
  • 00:09:09.260 --> 00:09:11.140
  • because Saul was tall, y'all.
  • 00:09:11.150 --> 00:09:15.150
  • I've just about worn that out, but you understand
  • 00:09:15.160 --> 00:09:18.220
  • that they were choosing their king by height, by height.
  • 00:09:18.230 --> 00:09:25.060
  • How many decisions have you made in your life based on
  • 00:09:25.070 --> 00:09:28.160
  • what you could see on the surface?
  • 00:09:28.170 --> 00:09:33.230
  • Saul looked like a king. Saul must be a king.
  • 00:09:33.240 --> 00:09:37.170
  • We know, because we have the benefit of seeing
  • 00:09:37.180 --> 00:09:39.180
  • the whole arc of the story,
  • 00:09:39.190 --> 00:09:41.120
  • that Saul didn't turn out to be the best king.
  • 00:09:41.130 --> 00:09:44.030
  • I don't want to say he was a bad king.
  • 00:09:44.040 --> 00:09:45.280
  • I don't know that I would have done much better.
  • 00:09:45.290 --> 00:09:48.050
  • But he didn't ultimately become everything he could have become.
  • 00:09:48.060 --> 00:09:53.040
  • Sometimes we pick people out based on what we can see.
  • 00:09:53.050 --> 00:09:58.240
  • Saul kind of did his thing for a number of years,
  • 00:09:58.250 --> 00:10:02.230
  • won some victories, lost some battles.
  • 00:10:02.240 --> 00:10:05.180
  • He became, in many ways, psychotic
  • 00:10:05.190 --> 00:10:07.230
  • by the end of his life, but he was still tall.
  • 00:10:07.240 --> 00:10:12.190
  • And somewhere in the saga of this kingship,
  • 00:10:12.200 --> 00:10:15.080
  • God decided that he was going to choose a new king.
  • 00:10:15.090 --> 00:10:19.030
  • That's David, that's the one that you know a lot more about,
  • 00:10:19.040 --> 00:10:23.070
  • the one that brought down Goliath with the slingshot.
  • 00:10:23.080 --> 00:10:25.180
  • We mentioned that in an earlier episode.
  • 00:10:25.190 --> 00:10:28.110
  • The one who went on to be one of the greatest kings,
  • 00:10:28.120 --> 00:10:31.100
  • if not the greatest king that the nation would ever know.
  • 00:10:31.110 --> 00:10:35.290
  • And I want to show you something that God said
  • 00:10:36.000 --> 00:10:37.210
  • to Samuel the prophet.
  • 00:10:37.220 --> 00:10:40.220
  • And I hope this will help you in your life
  • 00:10:40.230 --> 00:10:42.140
  • because we're all trying to measure.
  • 00:10:42.150 --> 00:10:45.190
  • You know, measure success, and measure our potential.
  • 00:10:45.200 --> 00:10:49.200
  • And God says something here that I think
  • 00:10:49.210 --> 00:10:51.150
  • is an all-time truth.
  • 00:10:51.160 --> 00:10:53.050
  • When Samuel was trying to figure out who should be the next king,
  • 00:10:53.060 --> 00:10:56.050
  • the Lord said to Samuel, "Do not consider his appearance
  • 00:10:56.060 --> 00:11:01.260
  • or his height, for I have rejected him."
  • 00:11:01.270 --> 00:11:06.090
  • This was one of David's taller brothers
  • 00:11:06.100 --> 00:11:08.220
  • that was passing before Samuel,
  • 00:11:08.230 --> 00:11:10.180
  • and he looked kind of like a king,
  • 00:11:10.190 --> 00:11:12.070
  • because the last king they had was tall.
  • 00:11:12.080 --> 00:11:15.000
  • And so when David's older brother came
  • 00:11:15.010 --> 00:11:16.180
  • and he was kind of tall,
  • 00:11:16.190 --> 00:11:18.000
  • he looked like a king, but Samuel said,
  • 00:11:18.010 --> 00:11:19.180
  • "Don't pay attention to what people pay attention to.
  • 00:11:19.190 --> 00:11:22.130
  • "Don't pay attention just to how long his neck is.
  • 00:11:22.140 --> 00:11:27.280
  • "Don't pay attention to the things that
  • 00:11:27.290 --> 00:11:30.000
  • "just grab your attention right off the bat.
  • 00:11:30.010 --> 00:11:31.250
  • "Look deeper, for I have rejected him.
  • 00:11:31.260 --> 00:11:35.290
  • The Lord does not look at the things people look at."
  • 00:11:36.000 --> 00:11:40.080
  • People look at the outward appearance, don't they?
  • 00:11:40.090 --> 00:11:45.030
  • And that's not necessarily bad.
  • 00:11:45.040 --> 00:11:47.180
  • I mean, I think it's good sometimes that we put
  • 00:11:47.190 --> 00:11:51.130
  • our best appearance forward.
  • 00:11:51.140 --> 00:11:53.020
  • When I was getting dressed today,
  • 00:11:53.030 --> 00:11:54.230
  • I wanted to wear something that I thought would look nice
  • 00:11:54.240 --> 00:11:57.190
  • for the television program.
  • 00:11:57.200 --> 00:12:00.150
  • I thought it would be a good idea for me
  • 00:12:00.160 --> 00:12:02.070
  • to dress for the occasion.
  • 00:12:02.080 --> 00:12:03.170
  • This is not what I woke up in.
  • 00:12:03.180 --> 00:12:05.130
  • I was going to be in front of people today,
  • 00:12:05.140 --> 00:12:07.220
  • and so I figured that it would be good
  • 00:12:07.230 --> 00:12:09.230
  • because people look at the outward appearance.
  • 00:12:09.240 --> 00:12:12.150
  • So, I thought I would style my hair a little bit.
  • 00:12:12.160 --> 00:12:15.160
  • Don't tell anybody, but because I'm on camera,
  • 00:12:15.170 --> 00:12:17.210
  • I even had to put on some makeup.
  • 00:12:17.220 --> 00:12:20.080
  • Don't tell anybody.
  • 00:12:20.090 --> 00:12:21.240
  • You have to do that when you go on camera
  • 00:12:21.250 --> 00:12:23.160
  • so your face doesn't shine.
  • 00:12:23.170 --> 00:12:24.260
  • I got a little makeup on.
  • 00:12:24.270 --> 00:12:26.060
  • I don't do that every day, but I did it today for you.
  • 00:12:26.070 --> 00:12:29.100
  • So, people look at the outward appearance.
  • 00:12:29.110 --> 00:12:31.060
  • That's the way it is,
  • 00:12:31.070 --> 00:12:32.270
  • and there's nothing wrong with outward appearances.
  • 00:12:32.280 --> 00:12:34.170
  • But realize that when it comes to the things
  • 00:12:34.180 --> 00:12:37.160
  • that ultimately matter that the Lord--
  • 00:12:37.170 --> 00:12:40.260
  • and he's the only one who can do this, by the way.
  • 00:12:40.270 --> 00:12:42.280
  • For all of you who think you can judge what somebody's capable
  • 00:12:42.290 --> 00:12:45.040
  • of or what their motive is, the Lord--people see this,
  • 00:12:45.050 --> 00:12:50.100
  • and the Lord looks at the heart,
  • 00:12:50.110 --> 00:12:57.020
  • what's inside, the heart.
  • 00:12:57.030 --> 00:13:01.100
  • People measure with a stick.
  • 00:13:01.110 --> 00:13:08.080
  • God has the scale.
  • 00:13:08.090 --> 00:13:14.060
  • The stick is about the surface.
  • 00:13:14.070 --> 00:13:17.260
  • The scale is about substance.
  • 00:13:17.270 --> 00:13:22.060
  • (announcer) Most of us look in the mirror
  • 00:13:24.270 --> 00:13:26.080
  • and see our weaknesses, our flaws.
  • 00:13:26.090 --> 00:13:29.020
  • But what if we could see ourselves the way God sees us?
  • 00:13:29.030 --> 00:13:32.150

  • Call or click today.
  • 00:13:53.190 --> 00:13:55.230
  • One of the things about biblical language
  • 00:13:59.010 --> 00:14:01.110
  • that's very interesting is that terms we translate
  • 00:14:01.120 --> 00:14:03.170
  • into English can have multiple meanings
  • 00:14:03.180 --> 00:14:05.150
  • in the original language.
  • 00:14:05.160 --> 00:14:07.120
  • So, when we talk about that the walls were made of jasper
  • 00:14:07.130 --> 00:14:09.270
  • in the book of Revelation,
  • 00:14:09.280 --> 00:14:11.240
  • and that jasper represents glory,
  • 00:14:11.250 --> 00:14:14.110
  • the Hebrew word for glory is kabod.
  • 00:14:14.120 --> 00:14:16.180
  • And kabod translated means glory.
  • 00:14:16.190 --> 00:14:18.280
  • But literally, it means weight, weight.
  • 00:14:18.290 --> 00:14:24.150
  • People measure this.
  • 00:14:24.160 --> 00:14:29.210
  • God measures this.
  • 00:14:29.220 --> 00:14:35.060
  • "How'd you feel about that sermon?"
  • 00:14:35.070 --> 00:14:37.180
  • "I don't know.
  • 00:14:37.190 --> 00:14:39.240
  • "I know how it went in the room, but we're going to have to wait
  • 00:14:39.250 --> 00:14:44.110
  • "to see how much weight it carries after I preached it.
  • 00:14:44.120 --> 00:14:49.280
  • I can't measure like this, I don't know."
  • 00:14:49.290 --> 00:14:53.170
  • I think we need help measuring more.
  • 00:14:53.180 --> 00:14:56.210
  • I think we need to be more selective in what we measure
  • 00:14:56.220 --> 00:15:00.080
  • and how we measure.
  • 00:15:00.090 --> 00:15:01.230
  • So, a few questions on a practical level
  • 00:15:01.240 --> 00:15:04.140
  • to help you with this today,
  • 00:15:04.150 --> 00:15:05.280
  • because, you know, there were three or four people
  • 00:15:05.290 --> 00:15:08.280
  • who told me that I probably would not be
  • 00:15:08.290 --> 00:15:12.130
  • a very effective pastor.
  • 00:15:12.140 --> 00:15:15.040
  • And there are probably some people who think
  • 00:15:15.050 --> 00:15:16.280
  • that they were right.
  • 00:15:16.290 --> 00:15:18.140
  • They're probably like,
  • 00:15:18.150 --> 00:15:19.240
  • "Yeah, you should have listened to them."
  • 00:15:19.250 --> 00:15:21.040
  • But you know, there are thousands of people
  • 00:15:21.050 --> 00:15:22.160
  • that I've been able to help,
  • 00:15:22.170 --> 00:15:23.260
  • and there are thousands of people that I've been able
  • 00:15:23.270 --> 00:15:25.180
  • to be a blessing to in some way.
  • 00:15:25.190 --> 00:15:27.170
  • And I don't think it would have happened
  • 00:15:27.180 --> 00:15:29.010
  • if I would have measured myself.
  • 00:15:29.020 --> 00:15:30.150
  • Ask yourself this question, "How do I measure myself?"
  • 00:15:30.160 --> 00:15:34.180
  • How do I measure myself?
  • 00:15:34.190 --> 00:15:36.240
  • You have to--you have to make a decision as to
  • 00:15:36.250 --> 00:15:39.150
  • who gets to size you up.
  • 00:15:39.160 --> 00:15:42.220
  • And one thing that can happen in life is that people
  • 00:15:42.230 --> 00:15:44.290
  • who have small dreams for their own life
  • 00:15:45.000 --> 00:15:46.280
  • can use their stick to try to limit
  • 00:15:46.290 --> 00:15:49.080
  • and relegate yours to a lower level.
  • 00:15:49.090 --> 00:15:51.250
  • But you got to reject that. God rejects that.
  • 00:15:51.260 --> 00:15:53.280
  • He said, "I don't see people the way people see people.
  • 00:15:53.290 --> 00:15:56.250
  • I look at the heart."
  • 00:15:56.260 --> 00:15:58.090
  • God's the only one who knows what he put in you.
  • 00:15:58.100 --> 00:16:01.040
  • He's the only one who knows the content,
  • 00:16:01.050 --> 00:16:03.110
  • and he's the only one who determines the capacity.
  • 00:16:03.120 --> 00:16:06.190
  • And God knew that David was a great king
  • 00:16:06.200 --> 00:16:09.010
  • when he was just a shepherd.
  • 00:16:09.020 --> 00:16:11.130
  • If you measure yourself according to where you are,
  • 00:16:11.140 --> 00:16:14.220
  • you'll always stay stuck in what you see.
  • 00:16:14.230 --> 00:16:18.290
  • "I'm a shepherd."
  • 00:16:19.000 --> 00:16:20.280
  • Yeah, you're a shepherd, David, but you're also a king.
  • 00:16:20.290 --> 00:16:25.050
  • You know, David was acting like a king before he had a crown.
  • 00:16:25.060 --> 00:16:28.220
  • When he went out to fight Goliath,
  • 00:16:28.230 --> 00:16:30.100
  • he was demonstrating this kind of God reliance
  • 00:16:30.110 --> 00:16:33.150
  • that results in a healthy self-confidence.
  • 00:16:33.160 --> 00:16:36.140
  • Because Saul, remember Saul?
  • 00:16:36.150 --> 00:16:38.240
  • Saul the tall guy, tall Saul?
  • 00:16:38.250 --> 00:16:41.220
  • Tall Saul was like,
  • 00:16:41.230 --> 00:16:43.090
  • "Well, you can't fight him, you're too little.
  • 00:16:43.100 --> 00:16:44.210
  • You're just a boy."
  • 00:16:44.220 --> 00:16:46.020
  • And David was like, "Well, that's how you see me.
  • 00:16:46.030 --> 00:16:48.000
  • "But I don't see me how you see me.
  • 00:16:48.010 --> 00:16:50.050
  • "I don't see me in the light of what you say about me.
  • 00:16:50.060 --> 00:16:52.180
  • "I see me in the light of the one that I represent,
  • 00:16:52.190 --> 00:16:54.260
  • "and he's bigger than this giant, so let me at him.
  • 00:16:54.270 --> 00:16:57.270
  • Let me at him."
  • 00:16:57.280 --> 00:16:59.090
  • And he won.
  • 00:16:59.100 --> 00:17:00.260
  • I mean, spoiler alert, but David beat Goliath.
  • 00:17:00.270 --> 00:17:03.050
  • (announcer) Paul was a murderer.
  • 00:17:04.260 --> 00:17:06.130
  • Rahab was a prostitute.
  • 00:17:06.140 --> 00:17:08.000
  • Peter denied Jesus.
  • 00:17:08.010 --> 00:17:09.210
  • And Jonah was fish food.
  • 00:17:09.220 --> 00:17:11.170
  • By any standard, these guys were unqualified,
  • 00:17:11.180 --> 00:17:14.130
  • and yet God entrusted them with some of the most important tasks
  • 00:17:14.140 --> 00:17:18.060
  • in human history.
  • 00:17:18.070 --> 00:17:19.210
  • Just like these Bible greats, we struggle in the space
  • 00:17:19.220 --> 00:17:21.290
  • between our weaknesses and our dreams,
  • 00:17:22.000 --> 00:17:24.160
  • between who we think we are
  • 00:17:24.170 --> 00:17:26.050
  • and who God says we're meant to be.
  • 00:17:26.060 --> 00:17:27.290
  • Feeling unqualified?
  • 00:17:28.000 --> 00:17:29.130
  • Welcome to the club.
  • 00:17:29.140 --> 00:17:31.000
  • In his encouraging book "(UN)QUALIFIED"
  • 00:17:31.010 --> 00:17:33.040
  • Steven Furtick reveals the inspiring truth
  • 00:17:33.050 --> 00:17:35.250
  • that being unqualified is God's favorite qualification.
  • 00:17:35.260 --> 00:17:39.120
  • (Steven) This book is about understanding your identity
  • 00:17:39.130 --> 00:17:41.170
  • in light of who God is.
  • 00:17:41.180 --> 00:17:43.290
  • It's about coming to terms with the good, the bad,
  • 00:17:44.000 --> 00:17:46.180
  • and the unmentionable in your life
  • 00:17:46.190 --> 00:17:49.020
  • and learning to let God use you right where you are.
  • 00:17:49.030 --> 00:17:52.130
  • I believe that as you read it,
  • 00:17:52.140 --> 00:17:54.030
  • you'll discover that God has a way of using our weaknesses.
  • 00:17:54.040 --> 00:17:57.250
  • In fact, you'll be encouraged as you find out
  • 00:17:57.260 --> 00:18:00.040
  • that God really loves and uses unqualified people.
  • 00:18:00.050 --> 00:18:04.160
  • (announcer) In appreciation of your gift of any amount in support of TBN,
  • 00:18:04.170 --> 00:18:07.290

  • of encouraging teaching coming to you and others,

  • we'll rush you the book and the box set
  • 00:18:20.050 --> 00:18:22.010
  • of the entire 13-episode series on DVD.
  • 00:18:22.020 --> 00:18:25.010
  • Take a moment right now to call...
  • 00:18:25.020 --> 00:18:29.070
  • or share your gift securely online
  • 00:18:29.080 --> 00:18:31.040
  • when you visit tbn.org/unqualified.
  • 00:18:31.050 --> 00:18:34.250
  • How do I measure myself?
  • 00:18:37.280 --> 00:18:39.070
  • Another question to ask, "How do I measure opportunity?"
  • 00:18:39.080 --> 00:18:44.170
  • How do I measure opportunity?
  • 00:18:44.180 --> 00:18:47.160
  • It's interesting that Goliath
  • 00:18:47.170 --> 00:18:50.040
  • represented a threat to the nation of Israel,
  • 00:18:50.050 --> 00:18:55.080
  • and he represented an opportunity to David.
  • 00:18:55.090 --> 00:18:58.100
  • Or we might want to say that the opposition
  • 00:18:58.110 --> 00:19:01.240
  • became his opportunity.
  • 00:19:01.250 --> 00:19:03.080
  • When he came up on the battle lines, he said--he said,
  • 00:19:03.090 --> 00:19:06.040
  • "What's going to be done for the man who kills this giant?"
  • 00:19:06.050 --> 00:19:08.280
  • And there was a reward associated with his obedience.
  • 00:19:08.290 --> 00:19:12.280
  • But if you measure your opportunities like this,
  • 00:19:12.290 --> 00:19:18.000
  • you'll always see the size of the inconvenience.
  • 00:19:18.010 --> 00:19:21.140
  • You'll always see the size of the sacrifice.
  • 00:19:21.150 --> 00:19:23.180
  • You'll always see the size of the challenge.
  • 00:19:23.190 --> 00:19:28.000
  • But if you put it on the scale
  • 00:19:28.010 --> 00:19:30.050
  • and realize that you're carrying the name of the Lord God--
  • 00:19:30.060 --> 00:19:37.210
  • Now, I want to take a moment on this, it's very important.
  • 00:19:37.220 --> 00:19:40.000
  • David said, "You came against me with sword and spear,"
  • 00:19:40.010 --> 00:19:42.220
  • to Goliath, "but I come against you in the name of the Lord,
  • 00:19:42.230 --> 00:19:49.080
  • the God of Israel."
  • 00:19:49.090 --> 00:19:51.040
  • So, "I'm carrying the weightiest name,
  • 00:19:51.050 --> 00:19:54.270
  • the name that is above every name."
  • 00:19:54.280 --> 00:19:58.250
  • I need you to understand that whatever situation
  • 00:19:58.260 --> 00:20:01.100
  • God sends you into in your life,
  • 00:20:01.110 --> 00:20:03.130
  • you're carrying the name of God.
  • 00:20:03.140 --> 00:20:06.010
  • What does that mean?
  • 00:20:06.020 --> 00:20:07.140
  • You're carrying the character of God.
  • 00:20:07.150 --> 00:20:10.180
  • The competency of God is in you.
  • 00:20:10.190 --> 00:20:14.100
  • But if you only go by what you see on the surface,
  • 00:20:14.110 --> 00:20:17.190
  • you'll miss the opportunity.
  • 00:20:17.200 --> 00:20:19.160
  • How do I measure opportunity?
  • 00:20:19.170 --> 00:20:21.130
  • By the size of the challenge,
  • 00:20:21.140 --> 00:20:24.060
  • or by the size of the one whose name I carry?
  • 00:20:24.070 --> 00:20:29.120
  • How do I measure opportunity?
  • 00:20:29.130 --> 00:20:31.240
  • How do I measure myself?
  • 00:20:31.250 --> 00:20:33.250
  • Here's a good question to ask while we're at it.
  • 00:20:33.260 --> 00:20:37.280
  • How do I measure results?
  • 00:20:37.290 --> 00:20:41.080
  • How do I measure whether my life is making a difference,
  • 00:20:41.090 --> 00:20:44.160
  • whether I'm effective?
  • 00:20:44.170 --> 00:20:46.250
  • "How'd you feel about that sermon?"
  • 00:20:46.260 --> 00:20:49.040
  • "I don't know, I'll let you know."
  • 00:20:49.050 --> 00:20:51.200
  • It's kind of hard to feel like
  • 00:20:51.210 --> 00:20:53.050
  • you're a good parent while you're parenting.
  • 00:20:53.060 --> 00:20:56.180
  • That's the kind of stuff you can only see when they're about 39.
  • 00:20:56.190 --> 00:21:03.170
  • Yeah, after they've cranked out a couple of their own,
  • 00:21:05.120 --> 00:21:08.030
  • and you can see that they're taking some of the values
  • 00:21:08.040 --> 00:21:10.060
  • that you tried to give to them.
  • 00:21:10.070 --> 00:21:12.280
  • If you try to measure it while you're in it,
  • 00:21:12.290 --> 00:21:20.160
  • you'll end each day feeling like it wasn't much,
  • 00:21:20.170 --> 00:21:25.020
  • because your investment into a child
  • 00:21:25.030 --> 00:21:28.010
  • or your investment in a church or your investment in life,
  • 00:21:28.020 --> 00:21:31.190
  • even if you're investing in a retirement portfolio,
  • 00:21:31.200 --> 00:21:34.240
  • it's incremental.
  • 00:21:34.250 --> 00:21:38.000
  • So, if you check your retirement portfolio every day,
  • 00:21:38.010 --> 00:21:41.090
  • it's going to--you're going to be suicidal.
  • 00:21:41.100 --> 00:21:45.140
  • It'll be up, it's going to be down,
  • 00:21:45.150 --> 00:21:47.190
  • up and down, up and down, up and down.
  • 00:21:47.200 --> 00:21:51.080
  • If I went by just church attendance,
  • 00:21:51.090 --> 00:21:53.210
  • on Easter I'd be the man.
  • 00:21:53.220 --> 00:21:57.260
  • The week after Easter I'd be looking for another job,
  • 00:21:57.270 --> 00:22:02.060
  • because guess what?
  • 00:22:02.070 --> 00:22:03.190
  • It's like this.
  • 00:22:03.200 --> 00:22:07.020
  • What one great thinker said,
  • 00:22:07.030 --> 00:22:08.230
  • "Measure each day not by the harvest that you reap,
  • 00:22:08.240 --> 00:22:12.060
  • but by the seed that you sowed."
  • 00:22:12.070 --> 00:22:15.210
  • What would it be like to live that way?
  • 00:22:15.220 --> 00:22:17.210
  • To know that there is seed, and there is harvest,
  • 00:22:17.220 --> 00:22:22.110
  • but there is also time.
  • 00:22:22.120 --> 00:22:24.240
  • And some of you are in that time period right now
  • 00:22:24.250 --> 00:22:26.210
  • where you're not seeing much.
  • 00:22:26.220 --> 00:22:28.270
  • So, the way that you size up your situation
  • 00:22:28.280 --> 00:22:31.250
  • when you can't see results says everything
  • 00:22:31.260 --> 00:22:33.290
  • about your faith and the way that you interpret
  • 00:22:34.000 --> 00:22:38.150
  • the experiences of your life.
  • 00:22:38.160 --> 00:22:40.110
  • How do I measure this experience,
  • 00:22:40.120 --> 00:22:43.060
  • what I'm going through right now?
  • 00:22:43.070 --> 00:22:45.270
  • How do I measure, if I'm Joseph, this imprisonment?
  • 00:22:45.280 --> 00:22:50.270
  • Do I take it as a sign that God has forgotten me,
  • 00:22:50.280 --> 00:22:54.160
  • or do I believe that he's for me, that he's with me?
  • 00:22:54.170 --> 00:22:57.030
  • This experience, how I measure this experience,
  • 00:22:57.040 --> 00:23:01.120
  • how I measure this trial.
  • 00:23:01.130 --> 00:23:03.100
  • If I see the trial as a stopping point,
  • 00:23:03.110 --> 00:23:09.030
  • I'll never overcome.
  • 00:23:09.040 --> 00:23:10.140
  • But when I put it on the scale,
  • 00:23:10.150 --> 00:23:13.010
  • this is how we measure as children of God.
  • 00:23:13.020 --> 00:23:15.040
  • We don't measure it just with a stick.
  • 00:23:15.050 --> 00:23:17.030
  • "I'm convinced that the sufferings
  • 00:23:17.040 --> 00:23:18.280
  • of this present time," Paul said,
  • 00:23:18.290 --> 00:23:20.190
  • "that I can see are not worthy to be compared with the glory
  • 00:23:20.200 --> 00:23:25.260
  • or the weight that will be revealed to me."
  • 00:23:25.270 --> 00:23:28.230
  • But I've got to give it time.
  • 00:23:28.240 --> 00:23:30.110
  • I'm measuring more.
  • 00:23:30.120 --> 00:23:32.100
  • How do I measure myself?
  • 00:23:32.110 --> 00:23:34.190
  • How do I measure my opportunity?
  • 00:23:34.200 --> 00:23:37.100
  • How do I measure the results of my faith?
  • 00:23:37.110 --> 00:23:41.000
  • And how do I measure this experience?
  • 00:23:41.010 --> 00:23:43.150
  • I measure it by the glory of God,
  • 00:23:43.160 --> 00:23:46.190
  • and I realize that my purpose outweighs my pain.
  • 00:23:46.200 --> 00:23:52.110
  • This is how I measure.
  • 00:23:52.120 --> 00:23:54.050
  • My destiny outweighs my history.
  • 00:23:54.060 --> 00:23:59.230
  • The crown outweighs the cross.
  • 00:23:59.240 --> 00:24:03.270
  • Think if Jesus had measured his ministry
  • 00:24:03.280 --> 00:24:06.250
  • moments after the cross.
  • 00:24:06.260 --> 00:24:08.140
  • What did he have?
  • 00:24:08.150 --> 00:24:09.290
  • A disbanded group of derelict followers
  • 00:24:10.000 --> 00:24:12.290
  • that couldn't even stay with him
  • 00:24:13.000 --> 00:24:14.160
  • through the very thing that he was preparing them for.
  • 00:24:14.170 --> 00:24:17.200
  • But it wasn't about that moment.
  • 00:24:17.210 --> 00:24:19.210
  • It wasn't about that event.
  • 00:24:19.220 --> 00:24:22.000
  • It wasn't about that one point in history.
  • 00:24:22.010 --> 00:24:24.280
  • It was about a purpose.
  • 00:24:24.290 --> 00:24:26.230
  • And my hope outweighs my hardships.
  • 00:24:26.240 --> 00:24:30.000
  • God's grace outweighs my shame.
  • 00:24:30.010 --> 00:24:33.030
  • This is heaven's metric system.
  • 00:24:33.040 --> 00:24:35.240
  • This is what you've got to get on
  • 00:24:35.250 --> 00:24:37.140
  • if you want to really see God use your life,
  • 00:24:37.150 --> 00:24:40.000
  • and if you want to get past the measurements of people
  • 00:24:40.010 --> 00:24:42.160
  • and your own self-judgments.
  • 00:24:42.170 --> 00:24:44.110
  • The blessing outweighs the burden,
  • 00:24:44.120 --> 00:24:47.020
  • and God's favor outweighs my frustration.
  • 00:24:47.030 --> 00:24:51.180
  • I'm grateful that his glory weighs more.
  • 00:24:51.190 --> 00:24:57.150
  • And we pray today, God, that you would give us new eyes to see
  • 00:24:57.160 --> 00:25:03.080
  • and new hearts to know that you are working
  • 00:25:03.090 --> 00:25:06.270
  • all things together for your glory.
  • 00:25:06.280 --> 00:25:10.090
  • We declare over everybody who has
  • 00:25:10.100 --> 00:25:12.110
  • sized themselves up today incorrectly and inaccurately
  • 00:25:12.120 --> 00:25:16.070
  • that we're going to resize ourselves
  • 00:25:16.080 --> 00:25:19.150
  • according to your love, which is without bound
  • 00:25:19.160 --> 00:25:22.090
  • and without limit.
  • 00:25:22.100 --> 00:25:23.290
  • We thank you, Lord, that it's so high
  • 00:25:24.000 --> 00:25:25.160
  • and so deep and so wide, the love of Christ.
  • 00:25:25.170 --> 00:25:29.180
  • We thank you that that love is alive and active
  • 00:25:29.190 --> 00:25:31.240
  • and working in us.
  • 00:25:31.250 --> 00:25:33.270
  • Thank you that you've called us according to your purpose,
  • 00:25:33.280 --> 00:25:36.120
  • and that you qualify those that you call.
  • 00:25:36.130 --> 00:25:39.250
  • Whether they're in a sheep field,
  • 00:25:39.260 --> 00:25:41.280
  • or whether they're raising children, single mom,
  • 00:25:41.290 --> 00:25:46.010
  • working in a job that they don't enjoy,
  • 00:25:46.020 --> 00:25:48.190
  • we thank you that you see differently than we see.
  • 00:25:48.200 --> 00:25:51.160
  • Give us your eyes to see, and open the eyes of our heart,
  • 00:25:51.170 --> 00:25:55.080
  • in Jesus' name, amen.
  • 00:25:55.090 --> 00:25:57.090
