  • The "(Un)Qualified" series is for every person

  • who's tired of dealing with the frustration and insecurity

  • 00:00:21.260 --> 00:00:24.000
  • They are immortalized, sanctified, revered.
  • 00:00:24.010 --> 00:00:28.130
  • They were God's chosen people, the founders of the church.
  • 00:00:28.140 --> 00:00:32.230
  • What were their qualifications?
  • 00:00:32.240 --> 00:00:34.290
  • A speech impediment. A denial of faith.
  • 00:00:35.000 --> 00:00:38.180
  • An affair.
  • 00:00:38.190 --> 00:00:40.140
  • Who were these heroes?
  • 00:00:40.150 --> 00:00:42.160
  • A murderer. A prostitute.
  • 00:00:42.170 --> 00:00:45.080
  • A liar and a schemer.
  • 00:00:45.090 --> 00:00:47.260
  • In the eyes of the world, they were unqualified.
  • 00:00:47.270 --> 00:00:50.210
  • But God has a history of using broken people to do big things.
  • 00:00:50.220 --> 00:00:54.200
  • And he still does it today.
  • 00:00:54.210 --> 00:00:57.050
  • I saw somethin' recently that grabbed my attention.
  • 00:01:02.110 --> 00:01:04.020
  • It was a memorandum that was sent to Jesus, son of Joseph,
  • 00:01:04.030 --> 00:01:08.190
  • at the woodcrafter carpenter shop in Nazareth
  • 00:01:08.200 --> 00:01:11.010
  • from the Jordan Management Consultant Firm in Jerusalem.
  • 00:01:11.020 --> 00:01:15.080
  • Obviously, this is fictitious, but it was written
  • 00:01:15.090 --> 00:01:18.150
  • as if Jesus had hired a consulting company
  • 00:01:18.160 --> 00:01:21.260
  • to tell him who to choose as his disciples.
  • 00:01:21.270 --> 00:01:24.230
  • And the memorandum reads like this.
  • 00:01:24.240 --> 00:01:26.260
  • I got a kick out of it.
  • 00:01:26.270 --> 00:01:28.180
  • It said: "Dear sir, thank you for submitting
  • 00:01:28.190 --> 00:01:30.150
  • "the resumes of the 12 men you have picked
  • 00:01:30.160 --> 00:01:33.110
  • "for management positions in your new organization.
  • 00:01:33.120 --> 00:01:36.170
  • "All of them have now taken our battery of tests.
  • 00:01:36.180 --> 00:01:39.120
  • "We have not only run the results through our computer,
  • 00:01:39.130 --> 00:01:42.150
  • "but also arranged personal interviews for each of them
  • 00:01:42.160 --> 00:01:45.020
  • "with our psychologist and vocational aptitude consultant.
  • 00:01:45.030 --> 00:01:48.100
  • "It is a staff opinion that most of your nominees
  • 00:01:48.110 --> 00:01:51.040
  • "are lacking in background, education,
  • 00:01:51.050 --> 00:01:53.100
  • "and vocational aptitude for the type of enterprises
  • 00:01:53.110 --> 00:01:56.090
  • "you are undertaking.
  • 00:01:56.100 --> 00:01:58.100
  • "They do not have the team concept.
  • 00:01:58.110 --> 00:02:00.140
  • "We would recommend that you continue your search
  • 00:02:00.150 --> 00:02:02.140
  • "for persons of experience
  • 00:02:02.150 --> 00:02:04.080
  • "in managerial ability and proven capability.
  • 00:02:04.090 --> 00:02:07.190
  • "Simon Peter is emotionally unstable
  • 00:02:07.200 --> 00:02:10.130
  • "and given to fits of temper.
  • 00:02:10.140 --> 00:02:12.290
  • "Andrew has absolutely no qualities of leadership.
  • 00:02:13.000 --> 00:02:16.040
  • "The two brothers, James and John,
  • 00:02:16.050 --> 00:02:18.150
  • "the sons of Zebedee,
  • 00:02:18.160 --> 00:02:20.010
  • "place personal interest above company loyalty.
  • 00:02:20.020 --> 00:02:22.130
  • "Thomas demonstrates a questioning attitude
  • 00:02:22.140 --> 00:02:24.210
  • "that would tend to undermine morale.
  • 00:02:24.220 --> 00:02:26.230
  • "We feel that it is our duty to tell you
  • 00:02:26.240 --> 00:02:29.040
  • "that Matthew has been blacklisted
  • 00:02:29.050 --> 00:02:31.130
  • "by the Greater Jerusalem Better Business Bureau.
  • 00:02:31.140 --> 00:02:34.190
  • "James, son of Alphaeus, and Thaddeus definitely
  • 00:02:34.200 --> 00:02:36.280
  • "have radical leanings,
  • 00:02:36.290 --> 00:02:38.250
  • "and they both registered a high score
  • 00:02:38.260 --> 00:02:40.130
  • "on the manic depressive scale.
  • 00:02:40.140 --> 00:02:42.180
  • "One of the candidates, however, shows great potential.
  • 00:02:42.190 --> 00:02:46.150
  • "He's a man of ability and resourcefulness.
  • 00:02:46.160 --> 00:02:49.050
  • "He meets people well, has a keen business mind,
  • 00:02:49.060 --> 00:02:52.120
  • "and has contacts in high places.
  • 00:02:52.130 --> 00:02:54.290
  • "He is highly motivated, ambitious, and responsible.
  • 00:02:55.000 --> 00:02:58.220
  • "We recommend Judas Iscariot as your controller
  • 00:02:58.230 --> 00:03:03.120
  • "and right-hand man.
  • 00:03:03.130 --> 00:03:05.190
  • "All of the other profiles are self-explanatory.
  • 00:03:05.200 --> 00:03:09.090
  • "We wish you every success in your new venture.
  • 00:03:09.100 --> 00:03:12.070
  • Sincerely yours, Jordan Management Consultants."
  • 00:03:12.080 --> 00:03:17.110
  • Aren't you glad that God doesn't pick people
  • 00:03:17.120 --> 00:03:21.190
  • like people pick people?
  • 00:03:21.200 --> 00:03:24.230
  • We're talking about being unqualified
  • 00:03:24.240 --> 00:03:28.200
  • and how what seems to us sometimes
  • 00:03:28.210 --> 00:03:31.190
  • to be the reason God can't use us
  • 00:03:31.200 --> 00:03:33.240
  • is often the very reason that he chooses to use us.
  • 00:03:33.250 --> 00:03:37.170
  • And nowhere do you see this more than with the disciples.
  • 00:03:37.180 --> 00:03:40.240
  • The more I read through the New Testament,
  • 00:03:40.250 --> 00:03:42.160
  • the more amazed I am at the patients
  • 00:03:42.170 --> 00:03:44.030
  • and grace of God that Jesus didn't just throw them
  • 00:03:44.040 --> 00:03:46.170
  • over the side of the boat.
  • 00:03:46.180 --> 00:03:48.140
  • I mean, no matter how many things they saw him do,
  • 00:03:48.150 --> 00:03:51.020
  • and no matter how many ways they saw him move,
  • 00:03:51.030 --> 00:03:52.260
  • and no matter how many acts
  • 00:03:52.270 --> 00:03:54.100
  • they saw him perform that were miraculous,
  • 00:03:54.110 --> 00:03:56.040
  • it seems like they still didn't get it.
  • 00:03:56.050 --> 00:04:00.030
  • Most of them fled at the scene of the cross.
  • 00:04:00.040 --> 00:04:02.250
  • Many of them didn't even believe after his Resurrection.
  • 00:04:02.260 --> 00:04:05.100
  • And I wanna share one of those stories with you
  • 00:04:05.110 --> 00:04:08.060
  • that's just kinda mind blowing
  • 00:04:08.070 --> 00:04:10.040
  • in the way that the disciples didn't get it,
  • 00:04:10.050 --> 00:04:13.260
  • like so often we don't get it.
  • 00:04:13.270 --> 00:04:16.150
  • And if I'm giving this a title,
  • 00:04:16.160 --> 00:04:17.280
  • I wanna call it "Piece It Together."
  • 00:04:17.290 --> 00:04:20.220
  • Because I wanna talk about how sometimes
  • 00:04:20.230 --> 00:04:22.290
  • we can miss the big picture
  • 00:04:23.000 --> 00:04:25.260
  • because we don't see the pieces in proper perspective.
  • 00:04:25.270 --> 00:04:29.250
  • Happens in all of our lives.
  • 00:04:29.260 --> 00:04:31.230
  • So Jesus and the disciples are moving away
  • 00:04:31.240 --> 00:04:33.250
  • from the Pharisees one day
  • 00:04:33.260 --> 00:04:36.080
  • and it says in Mark chapter 8, verse 14:
  • 00:04:36.090 --> 00:04:38.270
  • "The disciples had forgotten to bring bread,"
  • 00:04:38.280 --> 00:04:41.080
  • along their journey,
  • 00:04:41.090 --> 00:04:42.280
  • "except for one loaf they had with them in the boat."
  • 00:04:42.290 --> 00:04:45.190
  • And Jesus speaks up and gives them a warning.
  • 00:04:45.200 --> 00:04:47.130
  • "'Be careful.
  • 00:04:47.140 --> 00:04:49.070
  • "'Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees
  • 00:04:49.080 --> 00:04:50.270
  • and that of Herod.'
  • 00:04:50.280 --> 00:04:52.260
  • "They discussed this with one another and said,
  • 00:04:52.270 --> 00:04:54.230
  • "'It is because we have no bread.'
  • 00:04:54.240 --> 00:04:56.140
  • "Now, aware of their discussion, Jesus asked them:
  • 00:04:56.150 --> 00:04:58.280
  • "'Why are you talking about having no bread?
  • 00:04:58.290 --> 00:05:02.060
  • "'Do you still not see or understand?
  • 00:05:02.070 --> 00:05:04.070
  • "'Are your hearts hardened?
  • 00:05:04.080 --> 00:05:06.070
  • "'Do you have eyes but fail to see,
  • 00:05:06.080 --> 00:05:07.230
  • "'and ears but fail to hear?
  • 00:05:07.240 --> 00:05:09.110
  • And don't you remember?'"
  • 00:05:09.120 --> 00:05:11.090
  • I think sometimes that's the central question
  • 00:05:11.100 --> 00:05:14.160
  • of our relationship with Christ.
  • 00:05:14.170 --> 00:05:16.100
  • "Don't you remember?"
  • 00:05:16.110 --> 00:05:18.090
  • So often it's not something new we need to learn
  • 00:05:18.100 --> 00:05:19.240
  • but something we need to remember
  • 00:05:19.250 --> 00:05:21.270
  • that takes us to the next level of our faith.
  • 00:05:21.280 --> 00:05:24.130
  • "'Don't you remember when I broke the five loaves
  • 00:05:24.140 --> 00:05:26.140
  • "'for the five thousand?
  • 00:05:26.150 --> 00:05:28.010
  • "'How many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?'
  • 00:05:28.020 --> 00:05:30.230
  • "'Twelve,' they replied.
  • 00:05:30.240 --> 00:05:33.150
  • "'And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand,
  • 00:05:33.160 --> 00:05:35.200
  • "'how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?'
  • 00:05:35.210 --> 00:05:38.150
  • "And they answered, 'Seven.'
  • 00:05:38.160 --> 00:05:40.260
  • "And he said to them, 'Do you still not understand?'"
  • 00:05:40.270 --> 00:05:45.260
  • He tries to get them to remember the last time they had a need,
  • 00:05:45.270 --> 00:05:50.070
  • the last time they were hungry people
  • 00:05:50.080 --> 00:05:51.270
  • and not enough provision.
  • 00:05:51.280 --> 00:05:53.270
  • And he's trying to get them to make the connection
  • 00:05:53.280 --> 00:05:55.170
  • between his past faithfulness and their present circumstance.
  • 00:05:55.180 --> 00:05:58.170
  • "Don't you get it? Don't you remember?"
  • 00:05:58.180 --> 00:06:01.170
  • But it's hard to see it when you're in it.
  • 00:06:01.180 --> 00:06:03.270
  • You know, like now we look at the disciples
  • 00:06:03.280 --> 00:06:05.270
  • and it's very easy for us to judge them.
  • 00:06:05.280 --> 00:06:08.090
  • You know, "Trust Jesus.
  • 00:06:08.100 --> 00:06:09.250
  • He'll multiply ya. He's a great God."
  • 00:06:09.260 --> 00:06:12.040
  • But it's a little different when it's our situation.
  • 00:06:12.050 --> 00:06:14.230
  • It's a little different when we're looking at it
  • 00:06:14.240 --> 00:06:16.070
  • up close and personal.
  • 00:06:16.080 --> 00:06:18.140
  • It's a little different when we're under stress.
  • 00:06:18.150 --> 00:06:20.080
  • The disciples weren't thinking about legacy.
  • 00:06:20.090 --> 00:06:22.230
  • They were thinking about lunch.
  • 00:06:22.240 --> 00:06:25.080
  • "We don't have any bread."
  • 00:06:25.090 --> 00:06:27.010
  • And you know, most of our life
  • 00:06:27.020 --> 00:06:28.140
  • isn't spent thinking about grand, abstract, theoretical,
  • 00:06:28.150 --> 00:06:30.130
  • theological concepts about the superfluity of God.
  • 00:06:30.140 --> 00:06:35.120
  • It's a word I made up. We're not thinkin' like that.
  • 00:06:35.130 --> 00:06:39.060
  • We're just thinking about the stresses
  • 00:06:39.070 --> 00:06:41.080
  • and the strains of everyday life.
  • 00:06:41.090 --> 00:06:44.080
  • But your ability to piece it together
  • 00:06:44.090 --> 00:06:46.200
  • and to see the big picture is what sets you apart
  • 00:06:46.210 --> 00:06:49.180
  • from somebody who simply has potential
  • 00:06:49.190 --> 00:06:51.220
  • and somebody who realizes their potential.
  • 00:06:51.230 --> 00:06:55.120
  • You gotta learn to see it in pieces though,
  • 00:06:55.130 --> 00:06:57.080
  • and not everybody can see it.
  • 00:06:57.090 --> 00:06:59.230
  • I remember when Holly first started talking to me
  • 00:06:59.240 --> 00:07:02.080
  • in a motivational sense
  • 00:07:02.090 --> 00:07:04.160
  • to tell me that it was time for us to start our church.
  • 00:07:04.170 --> 00:07:08.020
  • Now, we've had our church for over 10 years now.
  • 00:07:08.030 --> 00:07:10.180
  • God has blessed it tremendously.
  • 00:07:10.190 --> 00:07:12.250
  • We've seen thousands of people have their lives changed
  • 00:07:12.260 --> 00:07:15.150
  • through the church.
  • 00:07:15.160 --> 00:07:17.110
  • And it's easy to see on this side
  • 00:07:17.120 --> 00:07:19.120
  • all of the plans that God had.
  • 00:07:19.130 --> 00:07:21.130
  • But you know, when you're standing
  • 00:07:21.140 --> 00:07:23.130
  • on the other side of it,
  • 00:07:23.140 --> 00:07:25.110
  • when you're in the boat, it's a little different.
  • 00:07:25.120 --> 00:07:27.190
  • Once you're reading Mark chapter 8
  • 00:07:27.200 --> 00:07:29.260
  • you can see the big picture of Jesus' ministry.
  • 00:07:29.270 --> 00:07:33.100
  • But when in your Mark chapter 7,
  • 00:07:33.110 --> 00:07:35.110
  • Mark 8 isn't so easy to speculate about.
  • 00:07:35.120 --> 00:07:37.090
  • And I remember Holly tellin' me, she was like,
  • 00:07:37.100 --> 00:07:39.030
  • "You gotta do this because God's given us some people.
  • 00:07:39.040 --> 00:07:41.050
  • "And God's given us a team.
  • 00:07:41.060 --> 00:07:43.080
  • "And God's given us an opportunity.
  • 00:07:43.090 --> 00:07:45.120
  • "And God's given you an ability.
  • 00:07:45.130 --> 00:07:46.280
  • "It's time for you to step out and start this church.
  • 00:07:46.290 --> 00:07:48.180
  • And I'm with you."
  • 00:07:48.190 --> 00:07:50.100
  • And she could see it. Somehow, she could see it.
  • 00:07:50.110 --> 00:07:52.050
  • My wife could see it and I couldn't see it.
  • 00:07:52.060 --> 00:07:54.290
  • But the thing about the way that God works in our lives
  • 00:07:55.000 --> 00:07:58.110
  • is he doesn't show us our potential all in one frame.
  • 00:07:58.120 --> 00:08:03.170
  • Our potential is revealed in pieces.
  • 00:08:03.180 --> 00:08:07.000

  • Call 800-225-3039 or visit TBN.org/unqualified.
  • 00:08:19.280 --> 00:08:25.070
  • Potential is revealed in pieces.
  • 00:08:27.200 --> 00:08:30.090
  • So when Jesus was walking with the disciples,
  • 00:08:30.100 --> 00:08:32.230
  • he didn't show them everything all at once.
  • 00:08:32.240 --> 00:08:35.130
  • Theologians call this concept, "Progressive revelation."
  • 00:08:35.140 --> 00:08:38.240
  • It means that he showed 'em a little bit,
  • 00:08:38.250 --> 00:08:41.240
  • and then a little bit more,
  • 00:08:41.250 --> 00:08:43.080
  • and a little bit more, and a little bit more.
  • 00:08:43.090 --> 00:08:46.050
  • When he told Peter that,
  • 00:08:46.060 --> 00:08:48.040
  • "Upon this rock I will build my church,"
  • 00:08:48.050 --> 00:08:50.010
  • Peter had no idea everything that entailed.
  • 00:08:50.020 --> 00:08:52.140
  • Jesus didn't show it to him all at once
  • 00:08:52.150 --> 00:08:54.130
  • because potential is always revealed in pieces.
  • 00:08:54.140 --> 00:08:57.230
  • And I wonder if you can see your own potential today.
  • 00:08:57.240 --> 00:09:01.160
  • I couldn't see my potential to do what I'm doing right now.
  • 00:09:01.170 --> 00:09:04.040
  • It took somebody from the outside
  • 00:09:04.050 --> 00:09:06.030
  • who believed in me to look at me
  • 00:09:06.040 --> 00:09:08.100
  • and help me connect the dots in my own potential.
  • 00:09:08.110 --> 00:09:13.130
  • I came across a scouting report from the 2009 NBA season.
  • 00:09:13.140 --> 00:09:18.160
  • And they were talkin' about one particular player.
  • 00:09:18.170 --> 00:09:21.090
  • And they had one of the teams' pre-draft scouting reports
  • 00:09:21.100 --> 00:09:24.260
  • on this player.
  • 00:09:24.270 --> 00:09:26.230
  • And it was submitted by a NBA former head coach.
  • 00:09:26.240 --> 00:09:30.060
  • And it listed all of this weakness,
  • 00:09:30.070 --> 00:09:33.150
  • these perceived weaknesses, of this particular NBA player.
  • 00:09:33.160 --> 00:09:36.210
  • And here are some of the things they said.
  • 00:09:36.220 --> 00:09:38.080
  • They listed 15 of these perceived weaknesses.
  • 00:09:38.090 --> 00:09:40.170
  • One was, "He's not a true point guard.
  • 00:09:40.180 --> 00:09:43.060
  • "Out of control at times. Shot selection.
  • 00:09:43.070 --> 00:09:46.140
  • "Ability to defend position at next level.
  • 00:09:46.150 --> 00:09:49.040
  • "Lateral quickness. Limited upside.
  • 00:09:49.050 --> 00:09:53.020
  • "Backup fringe starter.
  • 00:09:53.030 --> 00:09:54.250
  • "Average athleticism.
  • 00:09:54.260 --> 00:09:56.150
  • "Average size. Average wingspan.
  • 00:09:56.160 --> 00:09:59.160
  • "Frail frame.
  • 00:09:59.170 --> 00:10:01.170
  • Relies too heavily on outside shot."
  • 00:10:01.180 --> 00:10:03.250
  • I won't read all of 'em to you.
  • 00:10:03.260 --> 00:10:05.130
  • But I'm glad that Steph Curry didn't decide
  • 00:10:05.140 --> 00:10:10.020
  • that he had no future in the NBA
  • 00:10:10.030 --> 00:10:12.140
  • based on one scout's opinion of his potential.
  • 00:10:12.150 --> 00:10:17.100
  • And I came to say that sometimes in life you quit too quickly
  • 00:10:17.110 --> 00:10:21.020
  • because you don't see your potential.
  • 00:10:21.030 --> 00:10:23.070
  • Because, see, here's the thing
  • 00:10:23.080 --> 00:10:25.000
  • about all of those perceived weaknesses.
  • 00:10:25.010 --> 00:10:27.040
  • They may have been true, but what one scout said is he said,
  • 00:10:27.050 --> 00:10:29.260
  • "If you like Steph Curry,
  • 00:10:29.270 --> 00:10:32.090
  • you saw a glimpse of what he could become."
  • 00:10:32.100 --> 00:10:35.290
  • I want you to know that God likes you.
  • 00:10:36.000 --> 00:10:39.190
  • I don't know if you're convinced of that yet.
  • 00:10:39.200 --> 00:10:41.230
  • I know you might've had a teacher that didn't like you,
  • 00:10:41.240 --> 00:10:43.190
  • or maybe a spouse that left you
  • 00:10:43.200 --> 00:10:45.170
  • that decided they didn't like you,
  • 00:10:45.180 --> 00:10:47.040
  • or maybe even a parent that didn't like you.
  • 00:10:47.050 --> 00:10:49.060
  • But God likes you and he sees what you can become.
  • 00:10:49.070 --> 00:10:55.020
  • He sees the potential in your pieces.
  • 00:10:55.030 --> 00:10:58.210
  • They go on to say that,
  • 00:10:58.220 --> 00:11:00.270
  • "People who didn't like Steph Curry didn't see
  • 00:11:00.280 --> 00:11:04.020
  • "what a tremendous worker he was
  • 00:11:04.030 --> 00:11:06.290
  • and how much he cared about the game."
  • 00:11:07.000 --> 00:11:09.090
  • If you look back, you can see it.
  • 00:11:09.100 --> 00:11:12.140
  • And that's the difficult thing about potential
  • 00:11:12.150 --> 00:11:14.060
  • is it's very difficult to see in the present moment.
  • 00:11:14.070 --> 00:11:17.170
  • Sometimes it's only looking back that you can see it
  • 00:11:17.180 --> 00:11:20.010
  • because it's revealed in pieces.
  • 00:11:20.020 --> 00:11:24.060
  • You have potential, tremendous potential.
  • 00:11:24.070 --> 00:11:28.070
  • Sometimes you can't see it because it takes time
  • 00:11:28.080 --> 00:11:30.170
  • to put it together.
  • 00:11:30.180 --> 00:11:32.110
  • You know, you have this gift and this ability,
  • 00:11:32.120 --> 00:11:34.060
  • and this experience, and this thing, and that thing,
  • 00:11:34.070 --> 00:11:37.020
  • and here's the other thing.
  • 00:11:37.030 --> 00:11:39.120
  • And it doesn't look like much when you consider
  • 00:11:39.130 --> 00:11:44.120
  • what God is calling you to do
  • 00:11:44.130 --> 00:11:46.080
  • and it doesn't feel like you have what it takes.
  • 00:11:46.090 --> 00:11:47.260
  • But I want you to understand that not only is potential
  • 00:11:47.270 --> 00:11:50.160
  • realized in pieces, but provision is released in pieces.
  • 00:11:50.170 --> 00:11:56.100
  • Jesus points the disciples back to the pieces,
  • 00:11:56.110 --> 00:12:00.080
  • the fragments of bread that were leftover
  • 00:12:00.090 --> 00:12:02.090
  • the last time they were in a desperate situation,
  • 00:12:02.100 --> 00:12:04.170
  • the last time they had a problem, and he said,
  • 00:12:04.180 --> 00:12:06.180
  • "Don't you remember the pieces,
  • 00:12:06.190 --> 00:12:09.020
  • the pieces of provision that were leftover?"
  • 00:12:09.030 --> 00:12:13.040
  • I don't know if you have my toy here.
  • 00:12:13.050 --> 00:12:15.280
  • I actually have big plans tonight.
  • 00:12:15.290 --> 00:12:20.090
  • I'm gonna take this home and give it to my daughter.
  • 00:12:20.100 --> 00:12:24.230
  • And I'm pretty excited about it because I have three children,
  • 00:12:24.240 --> 00:12:28.100
  • two boys, one little girl.
  • 00:12:28.110 --> 00:12:30.220
  • And my daughter, Abby, well, she loves her princesses.
  • 00:12:30.230 --> 00:12:35.000
  • And I'm excited to take this home
  • 00:12:35.010 --> 00:12:37.120
  • and play with it with Abby 'cause I've been busy lately.
  • 00:12:37.130 --> 00:12:41.000
  • And I can't wait to play with it,
  • 00:12:41.010 --> 00:12:43.140
  • 'cause, see, it's amazing.
  • 00:12:43.150 --> 00:12:45.080
  • This is gonna be great.
  • 00:12:45.090 --> 00:12:47.020
  • And I'm gonna take it home and we're gonna--
  • 00:12:47.030 --> 00:12:49.290
  • 'cause, see, it's got this whole palace.
  • 00:12:50.000 --> 00:12:52.120
  • She's gonna love it. She's only 5.
  • 00:12:52.130 --> 00:12:55.060
  • It doesn't take much to impress a 5-year-old.
  • 00:12:55.070 --> 00:12:57.100
  • She is gonna freak out, gonna play with the palace,
  • 00:12:57.110 --> 00:12:59.190
  • and seek out Sebastian,
  • 00:12:59.200 --> 00:13:01.020
  • and all the slide, and everything.
  • 00:13:01.030 --> 00:13:03.030
  • It's gonna be amazing.
  • 00:13:03.040 --> 00:13:05.290
  • Wait a minute.
  • 00:13:09.240 --> 00:13:13.210
  • Hang on a second.
  • 00:13:21.040 --> 00:13:23.100
  • Y'all, I think I have a defective
  • 00:13:25.110 --> 00:13:30.060
  • princess undersea palace.
  • 00:13:30.070 --> 00:13:33.110
  • I think somethin's--
  • 00:13:33.120 --> 00:13:36.100
  • This is messed up 'cause I bought this.
  • 00:13:48.160 --> 00:13:55.130
  • And now they got-- it's broken.
  • 00:13:55.140 --> 00:13:59.110
  • It's brand new. It's not used.
  • 00:13:59.120 --> 00:14:01.080
  • I didn't buy it at a yard sale.
  • 00:14:01.090 --> 00:14:03.140
  • It's a--see, I guess what I'm trying to get you to see
  • 00:14:03.150 --> 00:14:12.030
  • is that sometimes in life
  • 00:14:12.040 --> 00:14:15.160
  • the pieces don't look like the picture.
  • 00:14:15.170 --> 00:14:21.240

  • 00:14:53.160 --> 00:14:55.080
  • And sometimes in life we have a picture
  • 00:14:58.050 --> 00:15:00.100
  • of what we think God is gonna do through us and in us and for us.
  • 00:15:00.110 --> 00:15:04.220
  • Some of you had a picture
  • 00:15:04.230 --> 00:15:06.130
  • that you would be married by now.
  • 00:15:06.140 --> 00:15:08.160
  • You had a picture of what that man would look like,
  • 00:15:08.170 --> 00:15:12.010
  • of how he would speak to you, of the nice, beautiful things
  • 00:15:12.020 --> 00:15:16.200
  • he would say to you and do for you.
  • 00:15:16.210 --> 00:15:18.290
  • And you had a picture,
  • 00:15:19.000 --> 00:15:21.040
  • but sometimes when you open the box, see,
  • 00:15:21.050 --> 00:15:28.140
  • this is what the whole first year of marriage is like,
  • 00:15:28.150 --> 00:15:30.250
  • by the way.
  • 00:15:30.260 --> 00:15:33.140
  • It's the difference between the picture and the piece.
  • 00:15:33.150 --> 00:15:40.090
  • So we wanna ask the question,
  • 00:15:40.100 --> 00:15:42.120
  • "What do you do when the picture doesn't look like the pieces?"
  • 00:15:42.130 --> 00:15:49.000
  • What do you do when you had a picture of what being a parent
  • 00:15:49.010 --> 00:15:52.000
  • is going to be like,
  • 00:15:52.010 --> 00:15:54.050
  • and you think you're gonna raise kids
  • 00:15:54.060 --> 00:15:56.020
  • and it's gonna be amazing,
  • 00:15:56.030 --> 00:15:57.220
  • and you're gonna raise these kids to be world changers,
  • 00:15:57.230 --> 00:15:59.190
  • and God says, "Okay, you wanna raise world changers?
  • 00:15:59.200 --> 00:16:02.190
  • "Change a diaper.
  • 00:16:02.200 --> 00:16:06.040
  • You wanna raise a world changer, start--"
  • 00:16:06.050 --> 00:16:08.140
  • It always starts with a piece.
  • 00:16:08.150 --> 00:16:11.090
  • And if you wait for God to give you
  • 00:16:11.100 --> 00:16:13.140
  • the fully assembled picture,
  • 00:16:13.150 --> 00:16:15.200
  • you're gonna always be waiting because God does not deliver
  • 00:16:15.210 --> 00:16:18.280
  • his promises into our life in fully formed pictures.
  • 00:16:18.290 --> 00:16:22.200
  • It always comes in pieces.
  • 00:16:22.210 --> 00:16:28.150
  • And I found out a lot of people give up on themselves,
  • 00:16:28.160 --> 00:16:31.110
  • and they give up on their dreams,
  • 00:16:31.120 --> 00:16:33.190
  • and they give up on their calling,
  • 00:16:33.200 --> 00:16:35.150
  • and they even give up,
  • 00:16:35.160 --> 00:16:37.080
  • they even give up on their destiny.
  • 00:16:37.090 --> 00:16:40.280
  • Because when they were seeing the picture,
  • 00:16:40.290 --> 00:16:44.210
  • they weren't expecting it to come in pieces.
  • 00:16:44.220 --> 00:16:50.210
  • That's why they ran when Jesus was on the cross.
  • 00:16:50.220 --> 00:16:56.180
  • Jesus was fulfilling his purpose,
  • 00:16:56.190 --> 00:16:59.240
  • the very thing he came to do,
  • 00:16:59.250 --> 00:17:01.160
  • but the disciples couldn't see the big picture in the pieces.
  • 00:17:01.170 --> 00:17:07.260
  • What'll happen to you in life is you'll get stuck on a piece
  • 00:17:07.270 --> 00:17:13.140
  • and you'll think, "Well, this isn't very much.
  • 00:17:13.150 --> 00:17:17.050
  • This isn't."
  • 00:17:17.060 --> 00:17:19.260
  • Can I encourage you?
  • 00:17:19.270 --> 00:17:22.030
  • Don't judge the picture by the pieces.
  • 00:17:22.040 --> 00:17:26.290
  • If you judge the picture by the pieces,
  • 00:17:27.000 --> 00:17:29.050
  • you'll always miss out on what God sees in you.
  • 00:17:29.060 --> 00:17:32.180
  • I've done this so many times in my life.
  • 00:17:32.190 --> 00:17:35.080
  • I've been in the middle of something
  • 00:17:35.090 --> 00:17:37.140
  • and because it didn't look like
  • 00:17:37.150 --> 00:17:39.090
  • I wanted it to look right away, I'm tempted to,
  • 00:17:39.100 --> 00:17:41.000
  • even writing a book is kinda like that,
  • 00:17:41.010 --> 00:17:43.110
  • if I can be honest.
  • 00:17:43.120 --> 00:17:45.020
  • Somewhere buried beneath Ariel's undersea palace,
  • 00:17:45.030 --> 00:17:47.080
  • yeah, here it is.
  • 00:17:47.090 --> 00:17:49.060
  • This is the book that this whole teaching series is based on,
  • 00:17:49.070 --> 00:17:53.080
  • "(Un)Qualified: How God Uses Broken People to Do Big Things."
  • 00:17:53.090 --> 00:17:58.110
  • See, the thing that you realize about a Lego set intuitively
  • 00:17:58.120 --> 00:18:02.120
  • is that it's in pieces on purpose.
  • 00:18:02.130 --> 00:18:07.120
  • It's in pieces on purpose
  • 00:18:07.130 --> 00:18:09.260
  • because it's meant to be assembled.
  • 00:18:09.270 --> 00:18:13.070
  • And don't you see it,
  • 00:18:13.080 --> 00:18:14.170
  • that God has put all of the components
  • 00:18:14.180 --> 00:18:16.100
  • of your calling inside the box of your life
  • 00:18:16.110 --> 00:18:19.070
  • and he's given you a picture of what it can be
  • 00:18:19.080 --> 00:18:22.050
  • and what it will be and what it shall be?
  • 00:18:22.060 --> 00:18:24.270
  • And I've left Ariel now and I'm talkin' to you.
  • 00:18:24.280 --> 00:18:27.100
  • To realize that if you give up because the piece
  • 00:18:27.110 --> 00:18:30.010
  • doesn't look like the picture,
  • 00:18:30.020 --> 00:18:31.140
  • you are going to miss your purpose.
  • 00:18:31.150 --> 00:18:34.100
  • I wrote this book in pieces.
  • 00:18:34.110 --> 00:18:36.180
  • I wrote it over the course of a year.
  • 00:18:36.190 --> 00:18:38.210
  • I started over with it several times.
  • 00:18:38.220 --> 00:18:40.140
  • And several times I wanted to give up
  • 00:18:40.150 --> 00:18:42.080
  • because all I could see was the pieces.
  • 00:18:42.090 --> 00:18:45.040
  • All I could see is the pieces. Now it's a book.
  • 00:18:45.050 --> 00:18:48.010
  • I mean, it's a pretty good book too.
  • 00:18:48.020 --> 00:18:49.190
  • I mean, my mom likes it. It's a pretty good book.
  • 00:18:49.200 --> 00:18:51.260
  • But that's the picture, not the pieces.
  • 00:18:51.270 --> 00:18:57.010
  • (announcer) Paul was a murderer. Rahab was a prostitute.
  • 00:19:00.270 --> 00:19:03.260
  • Peter denied Jesus. And Jonah was fish food.
  • 00:19:03.270 --> 00:19:07.190
  • By any standard, these guys were unqualified.
  • 00:19:07.200 --> 00:19:10.120
  • And yet, God entrusted them
  • 00:19:10.130 --> 00:19:12.120
  • with some of the most important tasks in human history.
  • 00:19:12.130 --> 00:19:15.110
  • Just like these Bible greats, we struggle in the space
  • 00:19:15.120 --> 00:19:17.290
  • between our weaknesses and our dreams,
  • 00:19:18.000 --> 00:19:20.110
  • between who we think we are
  • 00:19:20.120 --> 00:19:21.280
  • and who God says we are meant to be.
  • 00:19:21.290 --> 00:19:24.020
  • Feeling unqualified? Welcome to the club.
  • 00:19:24.030 --> 00:19:26.110
  • In his encouraging book, "(Un)Qualified,"
  • 00:19:26.120 --> 00:19:28.190
  • Steven Furtick reveals the inspiring truth
  • 00:19:28.200 --> 00:19:31.030
  • that being unqualified is God's favorite qualification.
  • 00:19:31.040 --> 00:19:34.210
  • (Steven Furtick) This book is about understanding your identity
  • 00:19:34.220 --> 00:19:37.110
  • in light of who God is.
  • 00:19:37.120 --> 00:19:39.160
  • It's about coming to terms with the good, the bad,
  • 00:19:39.170 --> 00:19:42.070
  • and the unmentionable in your life
  • 00:19:42.080 --> 00:19:44.130
  • and learning to let God use you right where you are.
  • 00:19:44.140 --> 00:19:49.010
  • I believe that as you read it, you'll discover that God
  • 00:19:49.020 --> 00:19:50.270
  • has a way of using our weaknesses.
  • 00:19:50.280 --> 00:19:53.270
  • In fact, you'll be encouraged as you find out that God
  • 00:19:53.280 --> 00:19:56.260
  • really loves and uses unqualified people,
  • 00:19:56.270 --> 00:20:00.100
  • (announcer) In appreciation of your gift of any amount in support of TBN,
  • 00:20:00.110 --> 00:20:03.130
  • we want to rush you your own copy
  • 00:20:03.140 --> 00:20:05.070
  • of Steven's empowering book "(Un)Qualified."

  • And if you're able to share a gift of support of $75 or more

  • 00:20:11.070 --> 00:20:13.260
  • coming to you and others,
  • 00:20:13.270 --> 00:20:15.210
  • we'll rush you the book and the boxed set
  • 00:20:15.220 --> 00:20:17.210
  • of the entire 13-episode series on DVD.

  • Take a moment right now to call 800-225-3039
  • 00:20:20.160 --> 00:20:24.200
  • or share your gift securely online
  • 00:20:24.210 --> 00:20:26.270
  • when you visit TBN.org/unqualified.
  • 00:20:26.280 --> 00:20:30.160
  • Do you like this cover? It's a pretty cover, yeah.
  • 00:20:33.150 --> 00:20:35.170
  • When I sent this approval over to our graphic designer
  • 00:20:35.180 --> 00:20:40.150
  • after he designed it, I said, "I really like it.
  • 00:20:40.160 --> 00:20:43.070
  • That's the one. Do it."
  • 00:20:43.080 --> 00:20:44.250
  • And he sent me back a note and he said,
  • 00:20:44.260 --> 00:20:47.000
  • "I wanted to tell you one detail about the cover."
  • 00:20:47.010 --> 00:20:49.080
  • He said, "You may not remember this, but around 2004, 2005,
  • 00:20:49.090 --> 00:20:53.100
  • "you spoke at a college in Tennessee
  • 00:20:53.110 --> 00:20:56.110
  • called Covenant College at a summer camp."
  • 00:20:56.120 --> 00:20:59.250
  • And he said, "You didn't know me then,
  • 00:20:59.260 --> 00:21:01.260
  • "but I was a counselor at the summer camp at Covenant College.
  • 00:21:01.270 --> 00:21:05.120
  • "And at that college in a chapel there's a stained glass window
  • 00:21:05.130 --> 00:21:09.280
  • "with this big, it's this huge, beautiful stained glass window.
  • 00:21:09.290 --> 00:21:12.220
  • "And so this art design is inspired
  • 00:21:12.230 --> 00:21:16.140
  • "by that stained glass window at Covenant College.
  • 00:21:16.150 --> 00:21:19.000
  • "But I know you probably don't remember it,
  • 00:21:19.010 --> 00:21:21.010
  • "but I was just tellin' you that's where it was from.
  • 00:21:21.020 --> 00:21:22.270
  • And you spoke at that place in 2005."
  • 00:21:22.280 --> 00:21:26.250
  • And I emailed him back and I said,
  • 00:21:26.260 --> 00:21:29.060
  • "Oh, yeah; I remember.
  • 00:21:29.070 --> 00:21:31.070
  • "I remember that place really well
  • 00:21:31.080 --> 00:21:34.000
  • "because that's where my wife Holly looked at me and said,
  • 00:21:34.010 --> 00:21:37.210
  • "'It's time for you to go start the church.'
  • 00:21:37.220 --> 00:21:42.070
  • "That's when God began to put together the pieces
  • 00:21:42.080 --> 00:21:45.120
  • to show me that he had put something inside of me."
  • 00:21:45.130 --> 00:21:50.070
  • And isn't it kinda cool that the cover of a book
  • 00:21:50.080 --> 00:21:52.290
  • that I wrote about being unqualified
  • 00:21:53.000 --> 00:21:55.270
  • was designed by a stained glass window
  • 00:21:55.280 --> 00:21:58.180
  • in the chapel of the place where my wife looked at me
  • 00:21:58.190 --> 00:22:00.260
  • and said, "You've got what it takes.
  • 00:22:00.270 --> 00:22:03.090
  • Let's do this."
  • 00:22:03.100 --> 00:22:05.100
  • Now, if I had waited for the full picture
  • 00:22:05.110 --> 00:22:07.010
  • to come into visibility,
  • 00:22:07.020 --> 00:22:09.050
  • if I had waited for all of the evidence
  • 00:22:09.060 --> 00:22:11.060
  • that God use me to come in,
  • 00:22:11.070 --> 00:22:13.040
  • you gotta take the piece that you have
  • 00:22:13.050 --> 00:22:16.270
  • and put one piece with another.
  • 00:22:16.280 --> 00:22:20.030
  • By the way, I hate Legos.
  • 00:22:20.040 --> 00:22:22.220
  • I love Ariel, but I hate Legos.
  • 00:22:22.230 --> 00:22:26.180
  • But what Legos taught me about is
  • 00:22:26.190 --> 00:22:29.000
  • if you put enough pieces together,
  • 00:22:29.010 --> 00:22:31.230
  • if you continue to be faithful in a small thing,
  • 00:22:31.240 --> 00:22:35.050
  • if you take one piece and put it with another,
  • 00:22:35.060 --> 00:22:38.070
  • and put it with another, and hopefully,
  • 00:22:38.080 --> 00:22:40.100
  • my teaching skills are better than my Lego skills,
  • 00:22:40.110 --> 00:22:42.220
  • but you get the point of what I'm saying,
  • 00:22:42.230 --> 00:22:44.290
  • is that God is piecing together something in your life.
  • 00:22:45.000 --> 00:22:48.260
  • God is piecing together purpose in your life.
  • 00:22:48.270 --> 00:22:52.250
  • And purpose is revealed in pieces.
  • 00:22:52.260 --> 00:22:56.160
  • The disciples couldn't see it up close.
  • 00:22:56.170 --> 00:22:59.130
  • You can never see it when you're in it.
  • 00:22:59.140 --> 00:23:01.270
  • You can never see how God's using you
  • 00:23:01.280 --> 00:23:03.260
  • so you get discouraged.
  • 00:23:03.270 --> 00:23:05.240
  • You get doubtful.
  • 00:23:05.250 --> 00:23:07.150
  • You wanna give up because purpose is revealed in pieces.
  • 00:23:07.160 --> 00:23:10.050
  • So you have to trust that God sees the picture
  • 00:23:10.060 --> 00:23:12.120
  • while you're looking at the pieces.
  • 00:23:12.130 --> 00:23:14.150
  • And be faithful with the next piece.
  • 00:23:14.160 --> 00:23:17.040
  • Because from here it doesn't look like much.
  • 00:23:17.050 --> 00:23:19.210
  • I can't see much from this angle.
  • 00:23:19.220 --> 00:23:21.100
  • I can't see much.
  • 00:23:21.110 --> 00:23:22.240
  • You see anything? I don't see anything.
  • 00:23:22.250 --> 00:23:24.160
  • But if I step back just a little bit,
  • 00:23:24.170 --> 00:23:26.120
  • I see it a little differently.
  • 00:23:26.130 --> 00:23:28.040
  • And if I step back another step, oh, I see something now.
  • 00:23:28.050 --> 00:23:33.020
  • That looks like my book cover. That looks like a picture.
  • 00:23:33.030 --> 00:23:37.110
  • And if I step back another step,
  • 00:23:37.120 --> 00:23:40.090
  • I see that it was all a part of a bigger picture.
  • 00:23:40.100 --> 00:23:44.040
  • It was a part of a bigger purpose.
  • 00:23:44.050 --> 00:23:47.040
  • It was a part of a bigger plan.
  • 00:23:47.050 --> 00:23:49.240
  • It was a part of the panorama of something
  • 00:23:49.250 --> 00:23:52.080
  • that God was doing based on potential that he saw
  • 00:23:52.090 --> 00:23:55.060
  • that I couldn't see.
  • 00:23:55.070 --> 00:23:57.270
  • And I wanted to encourage you today,
  • 00:23:57.280 --> 00:24:00.100
  • don't give up on the picture because you're holding a piece.
  • 00:24:00.110 --> 00:24:05.270
  • I would advise you and encourage you
  • 00:24:05.280 --> 00:24:08.280
  • to bring God your broken pieces,
  • 00:24:08.290 --> 00:24:12.190
  • your five loaves, your two fish, your shepherd's staff,
  • 00:24:12.200 --> 00:24:16.180
  • whatever it is that doesn't seem to be enough
  • 00:24:16.190 --> 00:24:18.140
  • to do what he's called you to do.
  • 00:24:18.150 --> 00:24:20.240
  • Bring him your broken pieces.
  • 00:24:20.250 --> 00:24:23.130
  • God knows how to make a mosaic out of broken pieces.
  • 00:24:23.140 --> 00:24:30.070
  • He knows how to use broken people to do big things.
  • 00:24:30.080 --> 00:24:33.270
  • He knows how to see the big picture
  • 00:24:33.280 --> 00:24:36.230
  • in the little pieces.
  • 00:24:36.240 --> 00:24:39.030
  • What you see today as only a piece
  • 00:24:39.040 --> 00:24:41.120
  • is a part of a greater purpose that God is fulfilling.
  • 00:24:41.130 --> 00:24:44.240
  • Holly said, "It's time."
  • 00:24:44.250 --> 00:24:47.010
  • I wonder what it's time for you to do.
  • 00:24:47.020 --> 00:24:50.250
  • You're not gonna see it all at once.
  • 00:24:50.260 --> 00:24:53.140
  • It's gonna come in pieces.
  • 00:24:53.150 --> 00:24:56.100
  • He's not going to show you everything that you can become
  • 00:24:56.110 --> 00:24:58.230
  • all at once.
  • 00:24:58.240 --> 00:25:00.220
  • He's going to reveal it in pieces.
  • 00:25:00.230 --> 00:25:03.060
  • If you take enough steps and you live enough days,
  • 00:25:03.070 --> 00:25:06.280
  • and you are faithful enough in the little things, then,
  • 00:25:06.290 --> 00:25:10.090
  • "All things work together for the good of those
  • 00:25:10.100 --> 00:25:13.130
  • who love God and are called according to his purpose."
  • 00:25:13.140 --> 00:25:18.100
  • God, I pray today that according to your purpose,
  • 00:25:18.110 --> 00:25:21.230
  • in our lives we would see the big picture
  • 00:25:21.240 --> 00:25:25.180
  • and recognize that while we're worried
  • 00:25:25.190 --> 00:25:27.240
  • about not having any bread,
  • 00:25:27.250 --> 00:25:30.170
  • the bread of life is in the boat with us.
  • 00:25:30.180 --> 00:25:33.140
  • I pray that you would open our eyes
  • 00:25:33.150 --> 00:25:35.250
  • to what has been there all along.
  • 00:25:35.260 --> 00:25:38.070
  • And I thank you today that you are piecing together
  • 00:25:38.080 --> 00:25:40.240
  • potential, provision, and purpose
  • 00:25:40.250 --> 00:25:44.240
  • in the lives of each of your children.
  • 00:25:44.250 --> 00:25:47.060
  • Help us to trust in moving forward
  • 00:25:47.070 --> 00:25:50.020
  • what we will only be able to understand looking back,
  • 00:25:50.030 --> 00:25:53.170
  • and to bring you our broken pieces,
  • 00:25:53.180 --> 00:25:56.030
  • in Jesus' name, amen.
  • 00:25:56.040 --> 00:25:57.220

  • Mary. And David.
  • 00:26:31.180 --> 00:26:33.120
  • Their spiritual resumes didn't match up
  • 00:26:33.130 --> 00:26:35.050
  • with their earthly assignments,
  • 00:26:35.060 --> 00:26:36.200
  • and yet God promoted these unqualified people
  • 00:26:36.210 --> 00:26:39.080
  • to positions they never dreamed they would fulfill.
  • 00:26:39.090 --> 00:26:41.290
