  • Fear: Good morning, Eddie.
  • 00:00:17.220 --> 00:00:20.050
  • Eddie: You, good morning.
  • 00:00:20.060 --> 00:00:22.070
  • Fear: Of course, it's me. Who else were you expecting?
  • 00:00:22.080 --> 00:00:24.290
  • What's this, a new cereal?
  • 00:00:25.000 --> 00:00:27.020
  • Eddie: Yeah.
  • 00:00:27.030 --> 00:00:28.200
  • Fear: Look at you mixing things up.
  • 00:00:28.210 --> 00:00:31.090
  • You don't think this cereal's gonna mess with your
  • 00:00:31.100 --> 00:00:33.280
  • digestive system do you?
  • 00:00:33.290 --> 00:00:35.140
  • You know, interfere with your--
  • 00:00:35.150 --> 00:00:37.020
  • Eddie: Seriously?
  • 00:00:37.030 --> 00:00:38.150
  • Fear: Sorry, but you know, you can't be too careful.
  • 00:00:38.160 --> 00:00:40.160
  • You certainly got more important things to be concerned about
  • 00:00:40.170 --> 00:00:42.170
  • today than a little cramping.
  • 00:00:42.180 --> 00:00:44.150
  • Eddie: Come on. I'm eating breakfast, all right?
  • 00:00:44.160 --> 00:00:46.110
  • Fear: That's good and that's good because you know what
  • 00:00:46.120 --> 00:00:48.060
  • they say, breakfast is the most important meal of the day.
  • 00:00:48.070 --> 00:00:51.270
  • Eddie: Even when you share it with fear?
  • 00:00:51.280 --> 00:00:53.220
  • Fear: Come on, Eddie, if I didn't pay you my morning visit
  • 00:00:53.230 --> 00:00:56.080
  • to give you a heads-up about the dangers lurking out there in
  • 00:00:56.090 --> 00:00:58.140
  • the world, How would you ever be prepared for the day?
  • 00:00:58.150 --> 00:01:00.270
  • Eddie: I don't know but I'd like to find out someday.
  • 00:01:00.280 --> 00:01:03.240
  • Fear: Come on, we've been doing this ever since.
  • 00:01:03.250 --> 00:01:06.240
  • Since when?
  • 00:01:06.250 --> 00:01:08.040
  • Eddie: For since I was a little boy.
  • 00:01:08.050 --> 00:01:09.280
  • You used to scare me all the time.
  • 00:01:09.290 --> 00:01:12.100
  • Fear: You were a fearful kid, always holding on to a little
  • 00:01:12.110 --> 00:01:15.040
  • blanky, little teddy bear.
  • 00:01:15.050 --> 00:01:17.090
  • You remember how you used to suck your thumbs, remember that?
  • 00:01:17.100 --> 00:01:20.090
  • Eddie: You know, I didn't even play football in
  • 00:01:20.100 --> 00:01:23.120
  • high school 'cause of you.
  • 00:01:23.130 --> 00:01:25.000
  • Fear: It was important that I warned you about
  • 00:01:25.010 --> 00:01:26.130
  • the possibilities of sports-related injuries.
  • 00:01:26.140 --> 00:01:28.170
  • Eddie: You know, I got a college scholarship
  • 00:01:28.180 --> 00:01:30.050
  • and I didn't take it 'cause of your harassment.
  • 00:01:30.060 --> 00:01:32.120
  • Fear: New York City can be a scary place to go to school,
  • 00:01:32.130 --> 00:01:34.090
  • Eddie.
  • 00:01:34.100 --> 00:01:35.190
  • Eddie: And now even as a grown man, you visit
  • 00:01:35.200 --> 00:01:37.020
  • every morning to terrorize me.
  • 00:01:37.030 --> 00:01:38.200
  • You fill my mind with the dread about the danger
  • 00:01:38.210 --> 00:01:40.220
  • beyond that door.
  • 00:01:40.230 --> 00:01:42.020
  • Fear: Speaking of that, today doesn't look so good.
  • 00:01:42.030 --> 00:01:44.290
  • Fear alert level is high.
  • 00:01:45.000 --> 00:01:47.050
  • Not to freak you out or anything, but the new
  • 00:01:47.060 --> 00:01:48.180
  • super virus has just been discovered.
  • 00:01:48.190 --> 00:01:50.100
  • A couple of convicts are on the loose.
  • 00:01:50.110 --> 00:01:52.060
  • A sinkhole swallowed some jogger, and that
  • 00:01:52.070 --> 00:01:54.280
  • strange neighbor of yours a couple doors down,
  • 00:01:54.290 --> 00:01:56.140
  • I saw him in your yard last night.
  • 00:01:56.150 --> 00:01:58.160
  • Eddie: What?
  • 00:01:58.170 --> 00:01:59.260
  • Fear: I am predicting that you will experience
  • 00:01:59.270 --> 00:02:01.130
  • high anxiety, extreme nervousness,
  • 00:02:01.140 --> 00:02:03.120
  • dry mouth, and sweaty palms.
  • 00:02:03.130 --> 00:02:05.070
  • Eddie: Wait, wait.
  • 00:02:05.080 --> 00:02:06.250
  • Fear: I'm not finished. Today's top story is bedbugs.
  • 00:02:06.260 --> 00:02:11.030
  • Eddie: Fear. Fear: What?
  • 00:02:11.040 --> 00:02:12.150
  • Eddie: Stop.
  • 00:02:12.160 --> 00:02:13.250
  • Fear: Too much for one sitting?
  • 00:02:13.260 --> 00:02:15.050
  • Eddie: No, take the prize.
  • 00:02:15.060 --> 00:02:16.150
  • Fear: Excuse me. Eddie: In the box, take it.
  • 00:02:16.160 --> 00:02:17.250
  • Fear: Really, I can have it?
  • 00:02:17.260 --> 00:02:19.110
  • Eddie: Yeah, it's the least I can do after everything
  • 00:02:19.120 --> 00:02:20.220
  • you've done for me.
  • 00:02:20.230 --> 00:02:22.020
  • Fear: It's just that you've never shared the prize
  • 00:02:22.030 --> 00:02:23.220
  • with me before.
  • 00:02:23.230 --> 00:02:25.020
  • I'm touched. Can't wait to see what it is.
  • 00:02:25.030 --> 00:02:27.090
  • Wonder if it's a ring or puzzle, or some kind of plush toys.
  • 00:02:27.100 --> 00:02:30.250
  • Oh wait, I feel something, I feel something.
  • 00:02:30.260 --> 00:02:32.240
  • yes, and you've got a--
  • 00:02:32.250 --> 00:02:35.240
  • Eddie: Final notice.
  • 00:02:35.250 --> 00:02:37.120
  • Fear: Final notice.
  • 00:02:37.130 --> 00:02:38.220
  • Eddie: Yeah, I've given you your final notice.
  • 00:02:38.230 --> 00:02:40.020
  • Fear: What does this mean?
  • 00:02:40.030 --> 00:02:41.130
  • Eddie: It means you can no longer share my breakfast table
  • 00:02:41.140 --> 00:02:43.020
  • with me.
  • 00:02:43.030 --> 00:02:44.240
  • Fear: But we've been through a lot together.
  • 00:02:44.250 --> 00:02:46.070
  • Eddie: And it all stops now.
  • 00:02:46.080 --> 00:02:47.240
  • Fear: But no one likes to eat alone.
  • 00:02:47.250 --> 00:02:49.220
  • Eddie: I'm not gonna eat alone.
  • 00:02:49.230 --> 00:02:51.020
  • You're being replaced.
  • 00:02:51.030 --> 00:02:52.120
  • Fear: Replaced? Who?
  • 00:02:52.130 --> 00:02:57.020
  • Eddie: God hath not given me a spirit of fear, but of power,
  • 00:02:57.030 --> 00:03:00.030
  • and of love, and of a sound mind.
  • 00:03:00.040 --> 00:03:01.290
  • Fear: Him? I knew it.
  • 00:03:02.000 --> 00:03:04.250
  • Eddie: Goodbye, Fear.
  • 00:03:04.260 --> 00:03:06.170
  • Fear: But I protect you. I give you warnings.
  • 00:03:06.180 --> 00:03:09.140
  • I keep you from danger.
  • 00:03:09.150 --> 00:03:11.020
  • Eddie: Fear, it's over.
  • 00:03:11.030 --> 00:03:12.130
  • Fear: You're a bully.
  • 00:03:12.140 --> 00:03:14.120
  • Eddie: No, you're a bully.
  • 00:03:14.130 --> 00:03:15.220
  • Fear: Well, you're a--
  • 00:03:15.230 --> 00:03:17.100
  • Eddie: Goodbye.
  • 00:03:17.110 --> 00:03:20.190
  • Fear: I hate breakfast.
  • 00:03:20.200 --> 00:03:23.180
  • Dr. David Jeremiah: Some of us invite it, most of us avoid it
  • 00:03:49.180 --> 00:03:53.280
  • but ultimately, all of us have to face it.
  • 00:03:53.290 --> 00:03:57.250
  • I'm talking about trouble.
  • 00:03:57.260 --> 00:04:00.150
  • From flat tires to financial collapse, trouble comes
  • 00:04:00.160 --> 00:04:04.280
  • in all shapes and sizes.
  • 00:04:04.290 --> 00:04:07.200
  • I'd love to say that being a Christian is your ticket
  • 00:04:07.210 --> 00:04:10.090
  • to a trouble-free life, but Jesus himself promised
  • 00:04:10.100 --> 00:04:14.190
  • that we will have trouble in this world.
  • 00:04:14.200 --> 00:04:17.190
  • So, if the fear of trouble makes you feel like staying in bed
  • 00:04:17.200 --> 00:04:21.160
  • safely inside your comfort zone, today's message is for you.
  • 00:04:21.170 --> 00:04:26.210
  • I'll show you from God's Word that there's a purpose
  • 00:04:26.220 --> 00:04:28.200
  • for the storms of life, and I'll explain how
  • 00:04:28.210 --> 00:04:32.280
  • you can experience peace in the midst of them.
  • 00:04:32.290 --> 00:04:36.080

  • announcer: Living in today's world can be perilous.
  • 00:04:51.290 --> 00:04:54.060
  • Worry, anxiety, and fear seem to be a part of daily life.
  • 00:04:54.070 --> 00:04:57.210
  • From who or what are we really safe?
  • 00:04:57.220 --> 00:05:00.210
  • Ever feel that way?
  • 00:05:00.220 --> 00:05:02.100
  • Satan wants to hold you captive to your fears.
  • 00:05:02.110 --> 00:05:05.140
  • However, God has not given us the spirit of fear,
  • 00:05:05.150 --> 00:05:08.070
  • but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

  • Dr. Jeremiah: Today in our faster, more crowded,
  • 00:05:44.280 --> 00:05:47.290
  • and more complex world, a few little squalls can quickly
  • 00:05:48.000 --> 00:05:52.060
  • become the perfect storm.
  • 00:05:52.070 --> 00:05:55.030
  • When multiple conditions converge and threaten critical
  • 00:05:55.040 --> 00:05:59.150
  • areas of life, such as our financial security, our marital
  • 00:05:59.160 --> 00:06:04.280
  • harmony, our relationships, our jobs, our health, sometimes we
  • 00:06:04.290 --> 00:06:10.290
  • just throw up our hands and say, "I can't take anymore."
  • 00:06:11.000 --> 00:06:14.120
  • And when that happens, fear enters our life.
  • 00:06:14.130 --> 00:06:19.030
  • As we examine the fear that we face in our lives, and we've
  • 00:06:19.040 --> 00:06:22.210
  • talked about this now for these weeks, fear is a fact that we
  • 00:06:22.220 --> 00:06:26.160
  • have to deal with because we live in a fallen universe,
  • 00:06:26.170 --> 00:06:29.040
  • don't we?
  • 00:06:29.050 --> 00:06:30.140
  • In the Bible, we learn that fear can be managed.
  • 00:06:30.150 --> 00:06:33.160
  • In God's Word, there is a wealth of guidance on dealing
  • 00:06:33.170 --> 00:06:36.070
  • with storms, both perfect and imperfect.
  • 00:06:36.080 --> 00:06:38.140
  • And don't let anyone tell you that fear is something we will
  • 00:06:38.150 --> 00:06:41.250
  • never experience if we live the Christian life.
  • 00:06:41.260 --> 00:06:43.290
  • I think you should know by now that the most often repeated
  • 00:06:44.000 --> 00:06:48.020
  • instruction in the Bible, more than any other instruction,
  • 00:06:48.030 --> 00:06:51.220
  • is "Fear not."
  • 00:06:51.230 --> 00:06:53.220
  • And if there wasn't a possibility of fear, I doubt
  • 00:06:53.230 --> 00:06:56.050
  • that Almighty God would allowed his Word to be salted with
  • 00:06:56.060 --> 00:06:58.270
  • that instruction.
  • 00:06:58.280 --> 00:07:00.140
  • So, fear is a reality.
  • 00:07:00.150 --> 00:07:01.240
  • And I want to remind you of a time when fear took over
  • 00:07:01.250 --> 00:07:04.190
  • in the lives of some followers of Jesus Christ.
  • 00:07:04.200 --> 00:07:08.180
  • In Mark chapter 4, verses 35 through 37, we have the story of
  • 00:07:08.190 --> 00:07:13.000
  • the disciples caught in their perfect storm and it begins
  • 00:07:13.010 --> 00:07:17.200
  • with verse 35 of the 4th chapter and the probability of storms
  • 00:07:17.210 --> 00:07:21.240
  • in our lives.
  • 00:07:21.250 --> 00:07:23.210
  • The Bible says that, "when evening had come,
  • 00:07:23.220 --> 00:07:25.130
  • Jesus said to them, 'Let us cross over to the other side.'
  • 00:07:25.140 --> 00:07:28.240
  • Now when they had left the multitude,
  • 00:07:28.250 --> 00:07:30.060
  • they took Him along in the boat as He was.
  • 00:07:30.070 --> 00:07:34.280
  • And other little boats were also with Him.
  • 00:07:34.290 --> 00:07:37.230
  • And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat,
  • 00:07:37.240 --> 00:07:41.150
  • so that it was already filling."
  • 00:07:41.160 --> 00:07:44.010
  • Now, the gospels, as you remember from the Book of Mark,
  • 00:07:46.060 --> 00:07:48.260
  • record that this event took place at a time when Jesus
  • 00:07:48.270 --> 00:07:51.240
  • was at the peak of his personal ministry.
  • 00:07:51.250 --> 00:07:55.220
  • The Bible tells us that he was at the edge of exhaustion.
  • 00:07:55.230 --> 00:07:59.200
  • He and his disciples were reeling from
  • 00:07:59.210 --> 00:08:03.140
  • uninterrupted ministry.
  • 00:08:03.150 --> 00:08:04.240
  • They were healing the sick, they were casting out demons, they
  • 00:08:04.250 --> 00:08:08.110
  • were dealing with opposition from those who didn't like them.
  • 00:08:08.120 --> 00:08:11.180
  • People were coming from all over.
  • 00:08:11.190 --> 00:08:13.180
  • Jesus had become an international celebrity, and
  • 00:08:13.190 --> 00:08:16.270
  • people who had sick folks were bringing the sick
  • 00:08:16.280 --> 00:08:19.020
  • folks to Jesus.
  • 00:08:19.030 --> 00:08:20.130
  • And the crowds had become so large,
  • 00:08:20.140 --> 00:08:23.120
  • they were almost unmanageable.
  • 00:08:23.130 --> 00:08:24.220
  • And on this particular day, as recorded here in the 4th chapter
  • 00:08:24.230 --> 00:08:27.260
  • of Mark, the crowds had become so large that Jesus, in order to
  • 00:08:27.270 --> 00:08:31.190
  • escape from the crowds, had to get into a little boat and push
  • 00:08:31.200 --> 00:08:34.250
  • out away from the shore using the boat itself as a pulpit
  • 00:08:34.260 --> 00:08:38.220
  • so that he could teach the people who were there.
  • 00:08:38.230 --> 00:08:41.220
  • And the Bible tells us that as evening came, after a long day
  • 00:08:41.230 --> 00:08:45.210
  • of exhausting ministry, Jesus felt the need, and his disciples
  • 00:08:45.220 --> 00:08:50.090
  • saw the need, to get him away from the pressure of the crowds
  • 00:08:50.100 --> 00:08:54.210
  • that had gathered to be ministered to by him.
  • 00:08:54.220 --> 00:08:57.050
  • And so, using the boat that had once been their pulpit.
  • 00:08:57.060 --> 00:09:01.140
  • They pushed off from the shore to go to the other side
  • 00:09:01.150 --> 00:09:04.190
  • of the lake.
  • 00:09:04.200 --> 00:09:06.000
  • And the Bible tells us that there were other little boats
  • 00:09:06.010 --> 00:09:08.200
  • that went along with them, so there was Jesus
  • 00:09:08.210 --> 00:09:10.230
  • and his entourage heading over to the other side of
  • 00:09:10.240 --> 00:09:14.230
  • the Sea of Galilee.
  • 00:09:14.240 --> 00:09:16.210
  • There's a lake in the United States that reminds me
  • 00:09:16.220 --> 00:09:19.010
  • of the Sea of Galilee, and that's the Lake Erie.
  • 00:09:19.020 --> 00:09:21.210
  • If you've ever been on Lake Erie, you know that you
  • 00:09:21.220 --> 00:09:23.260
  • can be out on Lake Erie and all of a sudden in a moment,
  • 00:09:23.270 --> 00:09:26.210
  • a storm can come up, that can be very frightening.
  • 00:09:26.220 --> 00:09:30.000
  • The Sea of Galilee is the perfect place for
  • 00:09:30.010 --> 00:09:33.080
  • a perfect storm, and that is just what happened.
  • 00:09:33.090 --> 00:09:36.270
  • It says in verse 37 that, "a great wind storm arose, and
  • 00:09:36.280 --> 00:09:40.040
  • the waves beat into the boat, and the boat was filling
  • 00:09:40.050 --> 00:09:43.000
  • up with water."
  • 00:09:43.010 --> 00:09:44.270
  • Mark uses a little word in the Greek language to tell us
  • 00:09:44.280 --> 00:09:49.050
  • how serious this storm was.
  • 00:09:49.060 --> 00:09:51.270
  • The word that he used can be translated by the phrase
  • 00:09:51.280 --> 00:09:54.220
  • "furious squall," or "hurricane."
  • 00:09:54.230 --> 00:09:58.080
  • This was a hurricane.
  • 00:09:58.090 --> 00:10:00.050
  • Matthew describes the storm as a great seismos and seismos,
  • 00:10:00.060 --> 00:10:04.230
  • as you probably can figure out, is the word in the language
  • 00:10:04.240 --> 00:10:07.200
  • of the New Testament for earthquake.
  • 00:10:07.210 --> 00:10:10.270
  • So, Matthew says it was like an earthquake in the water,
  • 00:10:10.280 --> 00:10:13.130
  • we know that today as a tsunami.
  • 00:10:13.140 --> 00:10:16.060
  • Those words give you the impression that the gospel
  • 00:10:16.070 --> 00:10:18.210
  • writers saw this as a very, very serious storm into which the
  • 00:10:18.220 --> 00:10:23.260
  • disciples and Jesus had found their way.
  • 00:10:23.270 --> 00:10:28.150
  • And just as the sudden storms happened in the physical world
  • 00:10:28.160 --> 00:10:32.080
  • in which we live, how many of you can raise your hand and say,
  • 00:10:32.090 --> 00:10:35.100
  • "I've had a few sudden storms in my life as well?"
  • 00:10:35.110 --> 00:10:38.080
  • Isn't that interesting?
  • 00:10:38.090 --> 00:10:41.030
  • The probability of storms in our lives, and notice secondly,
  • 00:10:41.040 --> 00:10:44.140
  • there's a paradox here.
  • 00:10:44.150 --> 00:10:46.290
  • There's something here that on the surface if we ask ourselves
  • 00:10:47.000 --> 00:10:49.250
  • the question, this doesn't make sense.
  • 00:10:49.260 --> 00:10:53.240
  • At this time in their lives, the disciples were following Jesus
  • 00:10:53.250 --> 00:10:58.020
  • wherever he went.
  • 00:10:58.030 --> 00:10:59.130
  • That's what a disciple is, he's a follower of Jesus, not just a
  • 00:10:59.140 --> 00:11:02.220
  • normal follower of Jesus, but an ardent follower of Jesus.
  • 00:11:02.230 --> 00:11:07.280
  • Jesus never went anywhere that his disciples
  • 00:11:07.290 --> 00:11:09.290
  • didn't go with him.
  • 00:11:10.000 --> 00:11:11.070
  • He didn't do anything that they didn't do.
  • 00:11:11.080 --> 00:11:13.050
  • He had even recently empowered them to preach,
  • 00:11:13.060 --> 00:11:16.090
  • and heal the sick, and cast out demons.
  • 00:11:16.100 --> 00:11:20.290
  • So, what the disciples were doing on this particular day
  • 00:11:21.000 --> 00:11:23.230
  • was, they were serving their Lord with all of their hearts,
  • 00:11:23.240 --> 00:11:28.000
  • and all of their soul, and all of their might.
  • 00:11:28.010 --> 00:11:32.010
  • And in the midst of that situation, they found themselves
  • 00:11:32.020 --> 00:11:36.130
  • in a very threatening moment.
  • 00:11:36.140 --> 00:11:39.150
  • They were in the middle of God's perfect will
  • 00:11:39.160 --> 00:11:42.140
  • and found themselves in the middle of a perfect storm,
  • 00:11:42.150 --> 00:11:47.030
  • all at the same time.
  • 00:11:47.040 --> 00:11:49.120
  • And we say, "Now, that's not the way that's supposed to work."
  • 00:11:49.130 --> 00:11:51.120
  • I mean, if you're a Christian and you're following the Lord,
  • 00:11:51.130 --> 00:11:53.110
  • doesn't he keep you out of the perfect storms?
  • 00:11:53.120 --> 00:11:57.190
  • I don't think so.
  • 00:11:57.200 --> 00:12:00.040
  • I've been in a few perfect storms.
  • 00:12:00.050 --> 00:12:02.010
  • My life has given me some instruction about that.
  • 00:12:02.020 --> 00:12:07.040
  • I don't think it was because at that particular time,
  • 00:12:07.050 --> 00:12:09.100
  • I was not in the will of God.
  • 00:12:09.110 --> 00:12:11.070
  • No, the paradox of this is that sometimes we are in perfect
  • 00:12:11.080 --> 00:12:15.170
  • storms, not because we have disobeyed God, but because we're
  • 00:12:15.180 --> 00:12:18.220
  • in the midst of obeying God, that God himself allows us to
  • 00:12:18.230 --> 00:12:23.100
  • experience difficult times, sudden trouble, not because
  • 00:12:23.110 --> 00:12:28.140
  • we've done anything wrong, but because we may be doing
  • 00:12:28.150 --> 00:12:30.210
  • something right.
  • 00:12:30.220 --> 00:12:32.190
  • Storms are not always punishment for the lack of obedience,
  • 00:12:32.200 --> 00:12:36.220
  • sometimes they're the result of obedience.
  • 00:12:36.230 --> 00:12:40.020
  • Those men were in that storm that day because they had
  • 00:12:40.030 --> 00:12:43.120
  • jumped in the boat when Jesus said, "Let's go."
  • 00:12:43.130 --> 00:12:46.140
  • And now they find themselves in this frightening,
  • 00:12:48.230 --> 00:12:52.160
  • terrifying situation.
  • 00:12:52.170 --> 00:12:54.170
  • We always do wrong, men and women, when we judge others on
  • 00:12:57.040 --> 00:13:01.060
  • the basis of the storms we see going on in their lives.
  • 00:13:01.070 --> 00:13:03.260
  • We may say, "Oh, they must not be doing something right."
  • 00:13:03.270 --> 00:13:06.050
  • No, no, they may be doing something really right.
  • 00:13:06.060 --> 00:13:10.030
  • God allows us to storms in the lives of his children and we'll
  • 00:13:10.040 --> 00:13:12.180
  • see some of the reasons for that in a few moments.
  • 00:13:12.190 --> 00:13:15.090
  • But I just want to encourage you today if you're going through
  • 00:13:15.100 --> 00:13:17.010
  • a rough spot, if you're having some squalls in your personal
  • 00:13:17.020 --> 00:13:20.210
  • life, don't necessarily beat yourself up about it.
  • 00:13:20.220 --> 00:13:24.250
  • God might be using it to teach you something to help you be
  • 00:13:24.260 --> 00:13:28.080
  • a better servant going forward, and a better person going
  • 00:13:28.090 --> 00:13:31.110
  • forward, the paradox of storms.
  • 00:13:31.120 --> 00:13:35.120
  • Notice thirdly, that in the midst of the storm, there was
  • 00:13:35.130 --> 00:13:38.040
  • a presence, the presence in the storm.
  • 00:13:38.050 --> 00:13:40.140
  • Here he was Jesus, verse 38, "In the stern, asleep on a pillow.
  • 00:13:42.260 --> 00:13:47.070
  • And they awoke Him and said to Him, 'Teacher, do You not care
  • 00:13:47.080 --> 00:13:50.070
  • that we are perishing?'"
  • 00:13:50.080 --> 00:13:52.070
  • Now, try the best you can in your,
  • 00:13:52.080 --> 00:13:54.240
  • in your creative mind to picture this situation.
  • 00:13:54.250 --> 00:14:00.070
  • The disciples are--they're probably with everything
  • 00:14:00.080 --> 00:14:03.200
  • they have trying to get the water out of the boat,
  • 00:14:03.210 --> 00:14:06.070
  • trying to keep this boat afloat.
  • 00:14:06.080 --> 00:14:07.220
  • And all of a sudden, it dawns on them that their fearless leader
  • 00:14:07.230 --> 00:14:11.180
  • is asleep in the same boat that they're trying to keep afloat.
  • 00:14:11.190 --> 00:14:17.070
  • And finally, they had had it and they went back and they wake up
  • 00:14:17.080 --> 00:14:20.250
  • Jesus and they say, "Don't you care about us?
  • 00:14:20.260 --> 00:14:23.060
  • Don't you care that we're perishing?"
  • 00:14:23.070 --> 00:14:25.190
  • And before we're too hard on them, before we're too hard on
  • 00:14:25.200 --> 00:14:29.020
  • them, have you done that?
  • 00:14:29.030 --> 00:14:30.250
  • "Lord, don't you care about this mess I'm in?
  • 00:14:30.260 --> 00:14:33.190
  • Don't you know the problems I have?
  • 00:14:33.200 --> 00:14:35.240
  • Don't you know I don't have enough money to pay my bills
  • 00:14:35.250 --> 00:14:38.080
  • this week?
  • 00:14:38.090 --> 00:14:39.230
  • Lord, don't you know that my marriage is coming unglued.
  • 00:14:39.240 --> 00:14:42.090
  • Lord.
  • 00:14:42.100 --> 00:14:43.040
  • Lord, are you asleep, Lord?"
  • 00:14:43.050 --> 00:14:46.260
  • So, that night on the Sea of Galilee, the exhausted Jesus
  • 00:14:46.270 --> 00:14:49.240
  • slept on a cushion in the rear of the boat with the waves
  • 00:14:49.250 --> 00:14:53.070
  • crashing all about him and his disciples in despair
  • 00:14:53.080 --> 00:14:56.030
  • for their lives.
  • 00:14:56.040 --> 00:14:57.060
  • There's an untold miracle here.
  • 00:14:57.070 --> 00:14:58.290
  • I'm not sure anybody ever notices it, but I noticed it
  • 00:14:59.000 --> 00:15:02.160
  • and that is, Jesus was sleeping during the storm.
  • 00:15:02.170 --> 00:15:08.130
  • Now, I tell you what, my wife will tell you I can sleep almost
  • 00:15:08.140 --> 00:15:11.010
  • anywhere but in a situation like that, I'm not sleeping.
  • 00:15:11.020 --> 00:15:13.260
  • I'm probably on my knees praying.
  • 00:15:13.270 --> 00:15:17.220
  • And the Bible tells us that this presence in the storm called
  • 00:15:17.230 --> 00:15:23.000
  • forth peace in the storm.
  • 00:15:23.010 --> 00:15:24.260
  • The peace in the storms of our lives is in verse 39.
  • 00:15:24.270 --> 00:15:27.170
  • "And Jesus arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea,
  • 00:15:27.180 --> 00:15:32.220
  • 'Peace, be still!' And the wind ceased and there was
  • 00:15:32.230 --> 00:15:38.200
  • a great calm."
  • 00:15:38.210 --> 00:15:40.210
  • Mark tells us that Jesus spoke to the wind in the same way
  • 00:15:41.200 --> 00:15:46.130
  • that he had spoken to the demon-possessed people.
  • 00:15:46.140 --> 00:15:49.240
  • He rebuked the wind.
  • 00:15:49.250 --> 00:15:51.270
  • If you go back and read the Book of Mark, you'll discover that
  • 00:15:51.280 --> 00:15:54.230
  • Jesus rebuked demons.
  • 00:15:54.240 --> 00:15:56.150
  • It's the same word.
  • 00:15:56.160 --> 00:15:58.160
  • Jesus spoke to the wind and he said, "Wind, stop it."
  • 00:15:58.170 --> 00:16:02.080
  • And immediately, the wind ceased, Miracle number one.
  • 00:16:06.180 --> 00:16:12.050
  • And immediately, the waves were calm, an even greater miracle.
  • 00:16:12.060 --> 00:16:15.170
  • Those of us who live on the coast know that when the wind
  • 00:16:15.180 --> 00:16:18.080
  • stops, the waves don't immediately stop, they keep
  • 00:16:18.090 --> 00:16:20.230
  • going for a while.
  • 00:16:20.240 --> 00:16:22.120
  • But on this day, the wind stopped and the waves stopped,
  • 00:16:22.130 --> 00:16:24.220
  • and it got the disciples' attention.
  • 00:16:24.230 --> 00:16:28.230
  • Let me tell you something, if you're a Christian,
  • 00:16:28.240 --> 00:16:30.290
  • Jesus is in your boat.
  • 00:16:31.000 --> 00:16:34.040
  • He's in the midst of your trouble.
  • 00:16:34.050 --> 00:16:36.000
  • He's with you. He hasn't gone to sleep.
  • 00:16:36.010 --> 00:16:37.210
  • He's not on vacation.
  • 00:16:37.220 --> 00:16:40.130
  • He's there with you.
  • 00:16:40.140 --> 00:16:41.230
  • Count on it, believe it, trust it, exercise your faith
  • 00:16:41.240 --> 00:16:46.110
  • around it.
  • 00:16:46.120 --> 00:16:47.200
  • If you put your faith in the one who is with you,
  • 00:16:47.210 --> 00:16:50.040
  • you won't be afraid of that which is around you.
  • 00:16:50.050 --> 00:16:54.010
  • He's in your boat.
  • 00:16:54.020 --> 00:16:55.060
  • He has promised never to leave you nor forsake you.
  • 00:16:55.070 --> 00:16:59.090
  • In the midst of your trouble, my friends, whatever it is, and I
  • 00:16:59.100 --> 00:17:02.070
  • have no idea what you're experiencing right now, you have
  • 00:17:02.080 --> 00:17:05.120
  • one thing you can count on that's undeniable, the Savior of
  • 00:17:05.130 --> 00:17:09.270
  • your soul, the Creator of the universe, he's in your boat with
  • 00:17:09.280 --> 00:17:15.090
  • you and he's promised to help you.
  • 00:17:15.100 --> 00:17:17.130
  • Now, let's talk for just a moment about the purpose of
  • 00:17:17.140 --> 00:17:22.080
  • these storms that we face and the purpose of that storm.
  • 00:17:22.090 --> 00:17:26.050
  • I've always been intrigued by this because I've heard people
  • 00:17:26.060 --> 00:17:29.080
  • say that Jesus set this whole thing up, that he was in control
  • 00:17:29.090 --> 00:17:35.030
  • so he set it all up and that he really probably wasn't sleeping,
  • 00:17:35.040 --> 00:17:38.000
  • he was peeking.
  • 00:17:38.010 --> 00:17:40.010
  • You know, I've actually heard people say that, you know?
  • 00:17:41.010 --> 00:17:43.090
  • He's laying in the--and he's watching his disciples, watching
  • 00:17:43.100 --> 00:17:45.210
  • them go through this thing.
  • 00:17:45.220 --> 00:17:47.030
  • Of course, I know that isn't true because that involves him
  • 00:17:47.040 --> 00:17:49.130
  • in manipulation, and Jesus is not a manipulator.
  • 00:17:49.140 --> 00:17:51.170
  • No, he allowed this storm in their lives.
  • 00:17:51.180 --> 00:17:55.270
  • He didn't put them into the storm.
  • 00:17:55.280 --> 00:17:57.220
  • He didn't try to hurt them.
  • 00:17:57.230 --> 00:18:00.060
  • And you know what?
  • 00:18:00.070 --> 00:18:01.100
  • And Somebody said, "Well, did he create the storm?"
  • 00:18:01.110 --> 00:18:02.210
  • How many of you know that Jesus doesn't have to create any
  • 00:18:02.220 --> 00:18:05.060
  • special storms because storms are just a part of life?
  • 00:18:05.070 --> 00:18:08.280
  • He just waits for the storm to come to show us how we can
  • 00:18:08.290 --> 00:18:11.030
  • deal with it.
  • 00:18:11.040 --> 00:18:12.070
  • So, I don't think he created that storm specifically
  • 00:18:12.080 --> 00:18:14.110
  • for his disciples.
  • 00:18:14.120 --> 00:18:15.230
  • It was gonna storm that day no matter what.
  • 00:18:15.240 --> 00:18:18.240
  • He was just with them when it happened.
  • 00:18:18.250 --> 00:18:21.120
  • And in the midst of the storm, he showed himself to be
  • 00:18:21.130 --> 00:18:23.190
  • so strong.
  • 00:18:23.200 --> 00:18:25.000
  • You know, one of the beautiful things about growing older in
  • 00:18:25.010 --> 00:18:27.260
  • Christ is the ability to look back over your shoulder and
  • 00:18:27.270 --> 00:18:31.080
  • realize that, "I've been here before, and he was with me then.
  • 00:18:31.090 --> 00:18:37.010
  • Why should I not expect him to be with me today?"
  • 00:18:37.020 --> 00:18:40.140
  • So, we've talked about the probability that storms in our
  • 00:18:40.150 --> 00:18:43.050
  • lives, and the paradox of it, and the presence who is the
  • 00:18:43.060 --> 00:18:46.030
  • Lord, and the peace, and the purpose, and the product is,
  • 00:18:46.040 --> 00:18:50.120
  • interestingly enough, the disciples came out of the storm,
  • 00:18:50.130 --> 00:18:54.000
  • in some sense, with a different kind of fear that was greater
  • 00:18:54.010 --> 00:18:56.260
  • than the fear they had in the beginning.
  • 00:18:56.270 --> 00:18:59.120
  • For it says in verse 40, "Jesus said to them,
  • 00:18:59.130 --> 00:19:03.090
  • 'Why are you so fearful?
  • 00:19:03.100 --> 00:19:04.220
  • How is it that you have no faith?'
  • 00:19:04.230 --> 00:19:06.170
  • And they feared exceedingly."
  • 00:19:06.180 --> 00:19:09.160
  • I mean, at least in the beginning they feared.
  • 00:19:09.170 --> 00:19:11.110
  • Now they fear exceedingly.
  • 00:19:11.120 --> 00:19:12.190
  • You say, "Well, what kind of help is that?"
  • 00:19:12.200 --> 00:19:15.110
  • "And they said to one another, 'Who can this be, that even the
  • 00:19:15.120 --> 00:19:19.150
  • wind and the sea obey Him!'" Jesus said to his disciples,
  • 00:19:19.160 --> 00:19:24.200
  • "Why are you so fearful?
  • 00:19:24.210 --> 00:19:25.290
  • How is it that you have no faith?"
  • 00:19:26.000 --> 00:19:28.250
  • And he revealed a key concept about fear that we must not
  • 00:19:28.260 --> 00:19:32.280
  • forget, the opposite of faith is not unbelief.
  • 00:19:32.290 --> 00:19:38.170
  • The opposite of faith is fear.
  • 00:19:38.180 --> 00:19:43.010
  • Belief breeds confidence, unbelief breeds fear.
  • 00:19:43.020 --> 00:19:48.150
  • Essentially, Jesus was saying, "Why are you afraid?
  • 00:19:48.160 --> 00:19:51.100
  • Don't you know I'm in this boat with you and I am God?"
  • 00:19:51.110 --> 00:19:55.080
  • And that was the problem, they didn't know he was God.
  • 00:19:55.090 --> 00:19:58.160
  • They hadn't come to that realization yet.
  • 00:19:58.170 --> 00:20:01.080
  • The disciples had the problem that they knew his presence
  • 00:20:01.090 --> 00:20:03.230
  • was there, but they didn't believe in his power.
  • 00:20:03.240 --> 00:20:06.100
  • We are just the opposite.
  • 00:20:06.110 --> 00:20:07.140
  • We believe in his power,
  • 00:20:07.150 --> 00:20:08.170
  • but we don't think he's involved with us.
  • 00:20:08.180 --> 00:20:10.150
  • I want tell you something, he's involved with you.
  • 00:20:10.160 --> 00:20:13.000
  • The Bible tells us that he knows everything there is to know
  • 00:20:13.010 --> 00:20:15.080
  • about you.
  • 00:20:15.090 --> 00:20:16.120
  • And especially when you're in a storm in your life,
  • 00:20:16.130 --> 00:20:19.170
  • count on it, he's in your boat, and he's there.
  • 00:20:19.180 --> 00:20:23.090
  • He's willing to wrap his arms around you, and help you,
  • 00:20:23.100 --> 00:20:25.260
  • and strengthen you.
  • 00:20:25.270 --> 00:20:27.030
  • He won't always make the storm go away immediately, but he will
  • 00:20:27.040 --> 00:20:30.060
  • add to you the strength that you need so that you can get through
  • 00:20:30.070 --> 00:20:33.210
  • it, not somehow, but with your hands up high.
  • 00:20:33.220 --> 00:20:37.130
  • That's what he promises.
  • 00:20:37.140 --> 00:20:40.050
  • I'd like to review this for a moment with four principles
  • 00:20:40.060 --> 00:20:45.020
  • that come from this story that are enduring,
  • 00:20:45.030 --> 00:20:48.210
  • lasting principles and I hope will be a blessing to all of us
  • 00:20:48.220 --> 00:20:51.290
  • as we think about fear going forward in our lives.
  • 00:20:52.000 --> 00:20:56.020
  • The promises for the storms in our lives, here's the first one,
  • 00:20:56.030 --> 00:21:01.020
  • God's Word assures us of a safe landing.
  • 00:21:01.030 --> 00:21:05.290
  • Notice two verses, I love to put these two verses together.
  • 00:21:06.000 --> 00:21:08.260
  • You have your Bibles still open to Mark chapter 4?
  • 00:21:08.270 --> 00:21:12.010
  • Here are the two verses.
  • 00:21:12.020 --> 00:21:13.110
  • The first one is verse 35 of the 4th chapter, Mark 4,
  • 00:21:13.120 --> 00:21:18.190
  • verse 35.
  • 00:21:18.200 --> 00:21:21.010
  • "On the same day, when evening had come, Jesus said to them,
  • 00:21:21.020 --> 00:21:25.090
  • 'Let us cross over to the other side--'" Got that one?
  • 00:21:25.100 --> 00:21:30.290
  • Take your finger and just go all the way down the page to
  • 00:21:31.000 --> 00:21:33.070
  • the first verse in chapter 5.
  • 00:21:33.080 --> 00:21:36.080
  • "Then they came to the other side."
  • 00:21:36.090 --> 00:21:41.150
  • Jesus said, "Let us go to the other side,"
  • 00:21:41.160 --> 00:21:44.190
  • Mark tells us they got to the other side.
  • 00:21:44.200 --> 00:21:48.240
  • The interesting thing about this story is that there are two
  • 00:21:48.250 --> 00:21:52.220
  • kinds of destinations that deserve our attention,
  • 00:21:52.230 --> 00:21:56.060
  • temporary destinations, and ultimate destination.
  • 00:21:56.070 --> 00:22:00.080
  • God assures us that we will arrive at our ultimate
  • 00:22:00.090 --> 00:22:03.250
  • destination, life with him in his eternal kingdom,
  • 00:22:03.260 --> 00:22:07.090
  • that is not up for discussion.
  • 00:22:07.100 --> 00:22:10.200
  • That promise alone should help us with all the kinds of fears
  • 00:22:10.210 --> 00:22:13.210
  • that we face.
  • 00:22:13.220 --> 00:22:14.290
  • This is not forever.
  • 00:22:15.000 --> 00:22:16.150
  • This is something that's going on now.
  • 00:22:16.160 --> 00:22:18.180
  • This too shall pass.
  • 00:22:18.190 --> 00:22:20.050
  • We walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
  • 00:22:20.060 --> 00:22:23.140
  • not into it.
  • 00:22:23.150 --> 00:22:25.200
  • The journey might be rough, but the confidence that we have is
  • 00:22:25.210 --> 00:22:29.100
  • that one day we're gonna spend eternity with the Lord,
  • 00:22:29.110 --> 00:22:32.120
  • hallelujah.
  • 00:22:32.130 --> 00:22:34.150
  • But, of course, God's Word also alerts us to expect stormy seas.
  • 00:22:34.160 --> 00:22:40.110
  • The New Testament is salted with warnings about storms,
  • 00:22:40.120 --> 00:22:43.250
  • and that's what's so surprising when Christians go through tough
  • 00:22:43.260 --> 00:22:47.080
  • times and they act like, "Well, why is this happening to me?"
  • 00:22:47.090 --> 00:22:49.280
  • Probably somebody told them, or they heard some preacher say,
  • 00:22:49.290 --> 00:22:52.150
  • "If you're a Christian, all your problems go away."
  • 00:22:52.160 --> 00:22:54.270
  • You gotta be kidding me.
  • 00:22:54.280 --> 00:22:57.170
  • When I got saved, I inherited a few I've never had before.
  • 00:22:57.180 --> 00:23:00.190
  • How about the rest of you?
  • 00:23:00.200 --> 00:23:02.050
  • Got some people that used to like you don't like you anymore
  • 00:23:02.060 --> 00:23:05.110
  • now you're a Christian.
  • 00:23:05.120 --> 00:23:06.260
  • The difference is, he's in our boat.
  • 00:23:06.270 --> 00:23:09.140
  • He's in our car.
  • 00:23:09.150 --> 00:23:10.190
  • He's with us and promises to carry us through and the
  • 00:23:10.200 --> 00:23:13.290
  • ultimate promise is that one day we will be with him forever.
  • 00:23:14.000 --> 00:23:18.150
  • Here's the third thing that I've learned, that God's Word
  • 00:23:18.160 --> 00:23:21.050
  • announces that the Savior is on board.
  • 00:23:21.060 --> 00:23:24.100
  • As a follower of Christ, I'd rather be with Jesus in the boat
  • 00:23:24.110 --> 00:23:28.270
  • in the midst of a storm, than on the shore without him.
  • 00:23:28.280 --> 00:23:33.120
  • And the Bible tells us that God's Word will drive that fear
  • 00:23:33.130 --> 00:23:37.240
  • out of your life.
  • 00:23:37.250 --> 00:23:39.090
  • I'd rather trust God going into a storm and know ahead of time
  • 00:23:39.100 --> 00:23:43.280
  • that he's gonna care for me and I'm gonna be okay, than to have
  • 00:23:43.290 --> 00:23:47.100
  • to figure that out while I'm in the midst of the storm.
  • 00:23:47.110 --> 00:23:50.160
  • I'd rather build my trust and my faith in God so that
  • 00:23:50.170 --> 00:23:53.150
  • when the storm comes, I know that the Lord Jesus and I are--
  • 00:23:53.160 --> 00:23:58.010
  • we're up to anything that life ever throws at us.
  • 00:23:58.020 --> 00:24:01.220
  • But if I don't have that, I might have to go through
  • 00:24:01.230 --> 00:24:03.170
  • the storm and learn it in the midst of the storm.
  • 00:24:03.180 --> 00:24:05.090
  • So, you can either trust God in the midst of the storm and learn
  • 00:24:05.100 --> 00:24:08.210
  • it in the process, or you can learn to trust him ahead of the
  • 00:24:08.220 --> 00:24:12.110
  • storm and know that he is sufficient for every need that
  • 00:24:12.120 --> 00:24:15.240
  • you have.
  • 00:24:15.250 --> 00:24:17.090
  • I know we're all creatures that deal with fear.
  • 00:24:17.100 --> 00:24:20.080
  • Here's what I know that I can tell you that I hope you'll
  • 00:24:20.090 --> 00:24:22.210
  • never forget, the more you build your faith, the less you will be
  • 00:24:22.220 --> 00:24:28.260
  • terrified by fear.
  • 00:24:28.270 --> 00:24:31.080
  • Life is basically a choice.
  • 00:24:31.090 --> 00:24:32.230
  • We either live by fear or we live by faith.
  • 00:24:32.240 --> 00:24:35.230
  • Faith comes by the hearing of the Word and the hearing of the
  • 00:24:35.240 --> 00:24:38.290
  • Word, and the teaching of the Word and the understanding of
  • 00:24:39.000 --> 00:24:41.090
  • the Word of God will little by little build you strong faith.
  • 00:24:41.100 --> 00:24:45.120
  • If you stay strong in faith, if you build your faith in Christ,
  • 00:24:45.130 --> 00:24:48.290
  • if you spend time knowing him, you will not ever feel alone in
  • 00:24:49.000 --> 00:24:53.250
  • the storm and you will negotiate the storm by the grace of God,
  • 00:24:53.260 --> 00:24:58.070
  • which I said before, with your hands of high.
  • 00:24:58.080 --> 00:25:01.020
  • You don't have to be afraid.
  • 00:25:01.030 --> 00:25:03.120
  • announcer: Dr. Jeremiah will return to close today's program
  • 00:25:04.140 --> 00:25:07.010
  • right after this.
  • 00:25:07.020 --> 00:25:09.020
  • announcer: Living in today's world can be perilous.
  • 00:25:11.060 --> 00:25:13.110
  • Worry, anxiety, and fear seem to be a part of daily life.
  • 00:25:13.120 --> 00:25:16.230
  • From who or what are we really safe?
  • 00:25:16.240 --> 00:25:19.250
  • Ever feel that way?
  • 00:25:19.260 --> 00:25:21.110
  • Satan wants to hold you captive to your fears.
  • 00:25:21.120 --> 00:25:24.240
  • However, God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of
  • 00:25:24.250 --> 00:25:27.280
  • power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
  • 00:25:27.290 --> 00:25:30.080
  • That's why "New York Times" bestselling-author
  • 00:25:30.090 --> 00:25:32.200

  • announcer: And now, with one last Word for today's program,
  • 00:25:55.160 --> 00:25:58.060
  • here is Dr. Jeremiah.
  • 00:25:58.070 --> 00:26:00.130
  • Dr. Jeremiah: The question isn't, "What will I do if sudden
  • 00:26:02.010 --> 00:26:04.290
  • trouble comes my way?"
  • 00:26:05.000 --> 00:26:06.270
  • The question is, "Where will I turn when the trouble come?"
  • 00:26:06.280 --> 00:26:11.180
  • We can't escape the storms and the waves of life, but we can
  • 00:26:11.190 --> 00:26:15.270
  • cling to the one who calmed the stormy sea with just his Word
  • 00:26:15.280 --> 00:26:21.090
  • and we can experience the peace that only Christ can provide.
  • 00:26:21.100 --> 00:26:26.030
  • It begins when we ask Jesus to be the Lord and Savior
  • 00:26:26.040 --> 00:26:30.050
  • of our life.
  • 00:26:30.060 --> 00:26:31.210
  • It's my prayer that you have done that and that you're eager
  • 00:26:31.220 --> 00:26:35.150
  • to continue growing in Christ.
  • 00:26:35.160 --> 00:26:38.050
  • So, I'd like to put a couple of free resources into your hands
  • 00:26:38.060 --> 00:26:41.030
  • that will help you, a booklet called "Your Greatest Turning
  • 00:26:41.040 --> 00:26:44.180
