  • Dr. David Jeremiah: Revelation, it is known
  • 00:00:02.250 --> 00:00:06.160
  • as a book of mysterious signs and wonders.
  • 00:00:06.170 --> 00:00:11.110
  • But the prophecy contained within speaks of more
  • 00:00:11.120 --> 00:00:14.010
  • than just what is to come in the end of days.
  • 00:00:14.020 --> 00:00:19.220
  • Found near the beginning of the book, Revelation contains
  • 00:00:19.230 --> 00:00:22.250
  • a collection of seven letters, dispatches from Jesus, delivered
  • 00:00:22.260 --> 00:00:27.260
  • by Revelation's human author, John.
  • 00:00:27.270 --> 00:00:31.240
  • These letters aren't long.
  • 00:00:31.250 --> 00:00:33.090
  • In fact, they're actually quite brief
  • 00:00:33.100 --> 00:00:35.120
  • and straight to the point.
  • 00:00:35.130 --> 00:00:37.090
  • The recipients?
  • 00:00:37.100 --> 00:00:39.020
  • The early Christian churches.
  • 00:00:39.030 --> 00:00:41.200
  • But while these letters spoke directly to seven churches
  • 00:00:41.210 --> 00:00:44.050
  • of antiquity, they, like the book of Revelation,
  • 00:00:44.060 --> 00:00:47.180
  • are prophetic, prophetic in that by them, Christ's words
  • 00:00:47.190 --> 00:00:51.220
  • speak to all churches through all the ages.
  • 00:00:51.230 --> 00:00:55.260
  • Seven churches, seven letters, seven messages
  • 00:00:55.270 --> 00:01:00.280
  • for today's believers, relevant words of commendation,
  • 00:01:00.290 --> 00:01:05.010
  • tender encouragement, and of warning.
  • 00:01:05.020 --> 00:01:08.080
  • So join me as we look into the Bible and discover
  • 00:01:08.090 --> 00:01:11.100
  • Christ's timeless words to his followers
  • 00:01:11.110 --> 00:01:14.220
  • through the seven churches of Revelation.
  • 00:01:14.230 --> 00:01:21.140
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Hello, I'm David Jeremiah.
  • 00:01:21.150 --> 00:01:23.180
  • Welcome to "Turning Point."
  • 00:01:23.190 --> 00:01:26.200
  • Lukewarm water is rarely appealing.
  • 00:01:26.210 --> 00:01:30.100
  • I mean, in the summer, we want cool, refreshing water.
  • 00:01:30.110 --> 00:01:33.280
  • And in the winter, we want hot, relaxing water.
  • 00:01:33.290 --> 00:01:36.280
  • But lukewarm water seems to have no effective purpose.
  • 00:01:36.290 --> 00:01:42.080
  • Did you know there was an ancient church in Laodicea
  • 00:01:42.090 --> 00:01:45.060
  • that Christ found to be lukewarm and very distasteful?
  • 00:01:45.070 --> 00:01:49.160
  • It was compromising, conceited, and Christ-less in its maturity.
  • 00:01:49.170 --> 00:01:55.110
  • It was blind and poor and naked in its spirituality.
  • 00:01:55.120 --> 00:01:59.070
  • And Christ's Words for the church in Laodicea are
  • 00:01:59.080 --> 00:02:02.170
  • Words that no church today should ever want to hear.
  • 00:02:02.180 --> 00:02:06.290
  • But we'll hear his Words in today's message entitled
  • 00:02:07.000 --> 00:02:10.130
  • "The Disgusting Church."
  • 00:02:10.140 --> 00:02:12.150
  • It's a strong message, but one meant to be redemptive
  • 00:02:12.160 --> 00:02:15.290
  • when applied.
  • 00:02:16.000 --> 00:02:17.120
  • So please join me as I continue teaching from our new series,
  • 00:02:17.130 --> 00:02:22.060

  • male announcer: Revelation is a mysterious book full of signs
  • 00:02:28.280 --> 00:02:31.140
  • and symbols, portraying things seen and unseen
  • 00:02:31.150 --> 00:02:34.220
  • in the world and those of the world to come,
  • 00:02:34.230 --> 00:02:37.180
  • especially appearing in numbers of seven.
  • 00:02:37.190 --> 00:02:40.180

  • Contact "Turning Point" today.
  • 00:03:44.020 --> 00:03:46.010
  • 00:03:47.280 --> 00:03:57.170
  • Dr. Jeremiah: The Lord describes the church of Laodicea
  • 00:03:58.070 --> 00:04:00.250
  • in very unflattering terms.
  • 00:04:00.260 --> 00:04:03.270
  • He says the church is neither cold nor hot,
  • 00:04:03.280 --> 00:04:06.250
  • but lukewarm.
  • 00:04:06.260 --> 00:04:08.020
  • Here was a church that was materially well-fixed, a church
  • 00:04:08.030 --> 00:04:12.030
  • that considered any activity for the Lord to be unnecessary
  • 00:04:12.040 --> 00:04:15.190
  • because they had everything they wanted.
  • 00:04:15.200 --> 00:04:17.210
  • They thought they had need of nothing.
  • 00:04:17.220 --> 00:04:20.040
  • But in reality, they were the most needy
  • 00:04:20.050 --> 00:04:22.120
  • of all of the seven churches.
  • 00:04:22.130 --> 00:04:24.230
  • This is the only church of the seven
  • 00:04:24.240 --> 00:04:26.150
  • about which the Lord has nothing positive to say.
  • 00:04:26.160 --> 00:04:30.220
  • In fact, the church made God sick.
  • 00:04:30.230 --> 00:04:34.030
  • It is interesting that God looks at apostasy and he gets angry,
  • 00:04:34.040 --> 00:04:37.140
  • he looks at indifference and he gets sick.
  • 00:04:37.150 --> 00:04:41.240
  • This church intrigues us most as we study the seven churches
  • 00:04:41.250 --> 00:04:45.130
  • because it represents the last of the churches.
  • 00:04:45.140 --> 00:04:49.020
  • And in the chronological order of the churches of Revelation,
  • 00:04:49.030 --> 00:04:52.000
  • the last church represents the actual church that will be
  • 00:04:52.010 --> 00:04:55.200
  • on the earth when Jesus comes back
  • 00:04:55.210 --> 00:04:57.290
  • at the Rapture.
  • 00:04:58.000 --> 00:04:59.060
  • So if you want to know what the church condition
  • 00:04:59.070 --> 00:05:01.100
  • is going to be like when the Lord Jesus comes back,
  • 00:05:01.110 --> 00:05:03.130
  • study this letter with me and you'll have
  • 00:05:03.140 --> 00:05:05.050
  • a pretty good idea.
  • 00:05:05.060 --> 00:05:06.140
  • The church when Jesus comes back will be exactly like this church
  • 00:05:06.150 --> 00:05:10.180
  • to which this letter was written.
  • 00:05:10.190 --> 00:05:13.000
  • So, I want you to think about the church.
  • 00:05:13.010 --> 00:05:15.000
  • I want you to think about your own lives
  • 00:05:15.010 --> 00:05:16.190
  • because, remember, these letters not only give us a picture
  • 00:05:16.200 --> 00:05:19.230
  • of the condition of an historic church,
  • 00:05:19.240 --> 00:05:21.280
  • of a church in history as we follow it through,
  • 00:05:21.290 --> 00:05:25.040
  • but they also tell us some things
  • 00:05:25.050 --> 00:05:26.250
  • about individual Christians, which will help us if we
  • 00:05:26.260 --> 00:05:29.130
  • allow them to.
  • 00:05:29.140 --> 00:05:30.240
  • First of all, notice the correspondent
  • 00:05:30.250 --> 00:05:32.130
  • to the last age church.
  • 00:05:32.140 --> 00:05:34.040
  • Remember, all of these letters start
  • 00:05:34.050 --> 00:05:36.040
  • with a particular description of Jesus Christ, which is
  • 00:05:36.050 --> 00:05:39.070
  • designed by the writer to fit exactly the need the church has.
  • 00:05:39.080 --> 00:05:43.290
  • And the correspondent to the last age church is Jesus.
  • 00:05:44.000 --> 00:05:47.240
  • And we learn about him first that he is
  • 00:05:47.250 --> 00:05:49.170
  • the confirmation of the Word.
  • 00:05:49.180 --> 00:05:52.010
  • Revelation 3:14 says, "These things says the Amen,
  • 00:05:52.020 --> 00:05:56.200
  • the Faithful and True Witness."
  • 00:05:56.210 --> 00:05:59.120
  • As the Lord addresses the church, he identifies
  • 00:05:59.130 --> 00:06:02.020
  • himself, first of all, as the Amen, the Faithful
  • 00:06:02.030 --> 00:06:05.230
  • and the True Witness.
  • 00:06:05.240 --> 00:06:07.140
  • In all of the other letters, these terms are the descriptions
  • 00:06:07.150 --> 00:06:09.220
  • of the Lord that emphasize his attributes, which are
  • 00:06:09.230 --> 00:06:12.190
  • necessary for the needy church to whom he writes.
  • 00:06:12.200 --> 00:06:16.030
  • As the Amen and Faithful and True Witness, he exposes
  • 00:06:16.040 --> 00:06:20.040
  • by his very title the deceit and superficiality
  • 00:06:20.050 --> 00:06:23.200
  • that characterized the assembly in the church of Laodicea.
  • 00:06:23.210 --> 00:06:27.210
  • The Laodiceans claimed to be rich, increased with goods,
  • 00:06:27.220 --> 00:06:31.140
  • and needing nothing.
  • 00:06:31.150 --> 00:06:32.220
  • But in reality, the Scripture says they were wretched,
  • 00:06:32.230 --> 00:06:35.210
  • and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked.
  • 00:06:35.220 --> 00:06:38.240
  • With his blazing, penetrating eyes of fire, the Lord,
  • 00:06:38.250 --> 00:06:43.000
  • who is himself truth, strips away all of the outward shell
  • 00:06:43.010 --> 00:06:47.100
  • and exposes the emptiness that's inside this church.
  • 00:06:47.110 --> 00:06:51.210
  • He's the confirmation of the Word.
  • 00:06:51.220 --> 00:06:53.090
  • He's also the creator of the world.
  • 00:06:53.100 --> 00:06:55.130
  • Notice at the end of the verse, "These things says the beginning
  • 00:06:55.140 --> 00:06:58.260
  • of the creation of God."
  • 00:06:58.270 --> 00:07:01.130
  • The beginning of the creation of God does not suggest
  • 00:07:01.140 --> 00:07:03.230
  • that Jesus was created.
  • 00:07:03.240 --> 00:07:05.230
  • The Bible doesn't teach that.
  • 00:07:05.240 --> 00:07:07.240
  • It's not that Jesus is created.
  • 00:07:07.250 --> 00:07:10.200
  • It means he is the source of creation,
  • 00:07:10.210 --> 00:07:14.080
  • he is the origin of creation.
  • 00:07:14.090 --> 00:07:16.090
  • "All things were made through him, and without him
  • 00:07:16.100 --> 00:07:18.280
  • nothing was made that was made," says the Scripture.
  • 00:07:18.290 --> 00:07:21.170
  • "God has in these last days spoken to us by his Son, whom he
  • 00:07:21.180 --> 00:07:25.130
  • has appointed heir of all things, through whom also
  • 00:07:25.140 --> 00:07:29.110
  • he made the worlds," Hebrews 1:2.
  • 00:07:29.120 --> 00:07:32.290
  • This is a message to the Laodiceans
  • 00:07:33.000 --> 00:07:35.030
  • that, in their wealth and complacency, thinking
  • 00:07:35.040 --> 00:07:38.080
  • themselves in control, Jesus is telling them, "No, you're not
  • 00:07:38.090 --> 00:07:41.170
  • in control.
  • 00:07:41.180 --> 00:07:42.270
  • You're not in control at all.
  • 00:07:42.280 --> 00:07:44.110
  • I am the very source.
  • 00:07:44.120 --> 00:07:45.220
  • In fact, everything you have originated ultimately with me."
  • 00:07:45.230 --> 00:07:52.000
  • We sometimes think we're self-made men, self-made women.
  • 00:07:52.010 --> 00:07:54.260
  • That's foolishness if you're a Christian.
  • 00:07:54.270 --> 00:07:57.170
  • All that you have is from God, every good gift
  • 00:07:57.180 --> 00:08:00.080
  • and every perfect gift comes down from the Father,
  • 00:08:00.090 --> 00:08:02.230
  • with whom there is no variableness,
  • 00:08:02.240 --> 00:08:04.240
  • nor shadow of turning.
  • 00:08:04.250 --> 00:08:07.020
  • And so, these arrogant people in this church, who have,
  • 00:08:07.030 --> 00:08:09.290
  • over a period of time, assumed to themselves
  • 00:08:10.000 --> 00:08:13.170
  • this spirit of invincibility, they're about to discover
  • 00:08:13.180 --> 00:08:17.140
  • how very vulnerable they are.
  • 00:08:17.150 --> 00:08:20.060
  • Jesus is the confirmation of the Word of God, and he's
  • 00:08:20.070 --> 00:08:23.200
  • the creator of the world.
  • 00:08:23.210 --> 00:08:26.050
  • Now, that's the correspondent.
  • 00:08:26.060 --> 00:08:27.270
  • Notice the characteristics of this last age church,
  • 00:08:27.280 --> 00:08:31.010
  • beginning in verse 15.
  • 00:08:31.020 --> 00:08:32.180
  • First of all, the Laodicean church is a compromising church.
  • 00:08:32.190 --> 00:08:37.100
  • "I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot.
  • 00:08:37.110 --> 00:08:40.240
  • I could wish," says the Lord, "that you were cold or hot.
  • 00:08:40.250 --> 00:08:44.080
  • So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold
  • 00:08:44.090 --> 00:08:47.100
  • nor hot, I will vomit you out of my mouth."
  • 00:08:47.110 --> 00:08:52.040
  • In every other area of life, men and women, whether it's
  • 00:08:52.050 --> 00:08:55.160
  • entertainment or sports or life, all of our Christian experience
  • 00:08:55.170 --> 00:08:59.230
  • is either dead and cold, or live and hot.
  • 00:08:59.240 --> 00:09:05.000
  • For instance, if you're a sports fan and you really love
  • 00:09:05.010 --> 00:09:06.250
  • this team, you don't care who sees how excited you are.
  • 00:09:06.260 --> 00:09:10.090
  • You know, when I was first getting started
  • 00:09:10.100 --> 00:09:11.290
  • back in Fort Wayne, Indiana, I was then a Dallas Cowboy fan.
  • 00:09:12.000 --> 00:09:15.190
  • Every weekend, we would watch the Cowboys in our home.
  • 00:09:15.200 --> 00:09:18.280
  • And sometimes, I'd have one of our babies in my hands.
  • 00:09:18.290 --> 00:09:22.140
  • My wife finally decided that was not good for the baby's health.
  • 00:09:22.150 --> 00:09:27.060
  • One night, I almost passed him across the room
  • 00:09:27.070 --> 00:09:29.090
  • to an unknown receiver.
  • 00:09:29.100 --> 00:09:32.180
  • When you get into the whole area of sports, isn't it interesting
  • 00:09:32.190 --> 00:09:35.130
  • how fanatical we become?
  • 00:09:35.140 --> 00:09:37.010
  • We don't care who watches us.
  • 00:09:37.020 --> 00:09:38.050
  • We jump up and down, and we scream.
  • 00:09:38.060 --> 00:09:40.170
  • And at first, when we're Christians, we are on fire
  • 00:09:40.180 --> 00:09:43.020
  • for God, isn't that true?
  • 00:09:43.030 --> 00:09:44.220
  • We find out what it means to be a Christian, we're so excited
  • 00:09:44.230 --> 00:09:46.290
  • about what God has done for us, what Christ has done for us,
  • 00:09:47.000 --> 00:09:49.220
  • and we're just on fire for the Lord.
  • 00:09:49.230 --> 00:09:52.040
  • And then, after a while, we get in with some tepid Christians,
  • 00:09:52.050 --> 00:09:55.110
  • who cool us off.
  • 00:09:55.120 --> 00:09:56.210
  • And we get tepid, and we get lukewarm.
  • 00:09:56.220 --> 00:10:00.100
  • The Laodicean church was a compromising church.
  • 00:10:00.110 --> 00:10:03.090
  • Notice, secondly, it was a conceited church.
  • 00:10:03.100 --> 00:10:06.010
  • Verse 17, "Because you say, 'I am rich, have become wealthy,
  • 00:10:06.020 --> 00:10:11.230
  • and have need of nothing,' and you do not know that you are
  • 00:10:11.240 --> 00:10:14.110
  • wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked."
  • 00:10:14.120 --> 00:10:19.090
  • The Laodiceans are typical of the modern church today,
  • 00:10:19.100 --> 00:10:23.130
  • which revels in the fact that everything you can see is
  • 00:10:23.140 --> 00:10:26.110
  • so good, but it seems untouched by the gospel, and does not see
  • 00:10:26.120 --> 00:10:31.230
  • beyond the veil of the material, to the unseen things
  • 00:10:31.240 --> 00:10:34.280
  • that really make a difference in the vitality of a church."
  • 00:10:34.290 --> 00:10:39.180
  • The church is the citadel of God's truth.
  • 00:10:39.190 --> 00:10:42.060
  • When you come to church, you should hear the truth of God.
  • 00:10:42.070 --> 00:10:44.180
  • When you come to God's church, you should be nourished up
  • 00:10:44.190 --> 00:10:47.000
  • in his truth.
  • 00:10:47.010 --> 00:10:48.150
  • But if all you have is entertainment,
  • 00:10:48.160 --> 00:10:50.050
  • and some of the bizarre things I have read about that people
  • 00:10:50.060 --> 00:10:52.280
  • do, then you're just like this church
  • 00:10:52.290 --> 00:10:56.100
  • in Laodicea.
  • 00:10:56.110 --> 00:10:57.290
  • You think you're doing good, but you're not.
  • 00:10:58.000 --> 00:11:00.090
  • You think you're wealthy, but you're poor.
  • 00:11:00.100 --> 00:11:04.100
  • The Laodicean church was a compromising church,
  • 00:11:04.110 --> 00:11:07.210
  • and it was a conceited church.
  • 00:11:07.220 --> 00:11:10.100
  • But it was also a Christ-less church.
  • 00:11:10.110 --> 00:11:13.220
  • Notice verse 20 in this text.
  • 00:11:13.230 --> 00:11:16.250
  • "Behold," Jesus says,is text.
  • 00:11:16.260 --> 00:11:19.230
  • "I stand at the door and knock.
  • 00:11:19.240 --> 00:11:23.030
  • If anyone hears my voice and opens the door,
  • 00:11:23.040 --> 00:11:26.170
  • I will come in to him and dine with him,
  • 00:11:26.180 --> 00:11:30.000
  • and he with me."
  • 00:11:30.010 --> 00:11:31.290
  • Here is the last characteristic of the church.
  • 00:11:32.000 --> 00:11:34.240
  • Jesus Christ is on the outside of the church, trying to get in.
  • 00:11:34.250 --> 00:11:41.170
  • Now, we often take this passage in Revelation 3:20
  • 00:11:41.180 --> 00:11:44.030
  • as an invitation passage for personal salvation.
  • 00:11:44.040 --> 00:11:47.220
  • It can be used for that, but that's not what it means.
  • 00:11:47.230 --> 00:11:50.100
  • Here is a picture, according to the writer
  • 00:11:50.110 --> 00:11:52.160
  • of the book of Revelation, of the condition of the church
  • 00:11:52.170 --> 00:11:55.040
  • in the last days.
  • 00:11:55.050 --> 00:11:56.170
  • Jesus Christ is not a part of the church.
  • 00:11:56.180 --> 00:11:58.220
  • He's on the outside of the church.
  • 00:11:58.230 --> 00:12:00.120
  • He's knocking at the door, trying to get into the church,
  • 00:12:00.130 --> 00:12:03.090
  • and obviously, he's not being received.
  • 00:12:03.100 --> 00:12:07.100
  • What a tragic picture of the church of Jesus Christ
  • 00:12:07.110 --> 00:12:11.040
  • in our age.
  • 00:12:11.050 --> 00:12:13.140
  • During his first visit to this world, Christ predicted
  • 00:12:13.150 --> 00:12:16.190
  • that his Second Coming would be met with unbelief.
  • 00:12:16.200 --> 00:12:20.150
  • He said in Luke 18:8, "Nevertheless,
  • 00:12:20.160 --> 00:12:23.000
  • when the Son of Man comes, shall he find faith
  • 00:12:23.010 --> 00:12:27.010
  • on this earth?"
  • 00:12:27.020 --> 00:12:28.010
  • And the expected answer is certainly not.
  • 00:12:28.020 --> 00:12:31.230
  • So the condition of the church at the time of Christ's return
  • 00:12:31.240 --> 00:12:34.250
  • is a Christ-less condition.
  • 00:12:34.260 --> 00:12:37.150
  • Jesus isn't in the church.
  • 00:12:37.160 --> 00:12:38.280
  • It's the church of Jesus, but he's not there.
  • 00:12:38.290 --> 00:12:42.020
  • He's trying to get in.
  • 00:12:42.030 --> 00:12:43.180
  • He's knocking at the door of the church, seeking entrance
  • 00:12:43.190 --> 00:12:46.220
  • back into the church, but he's not welcome.
  • 00:12:46.230 --> 00:12:51.000
  • The correspondent to the last church is Jesus,
  • 00:12:51.010 --> 00:12:54.020
  • who is the Amen of God.
  • 00:12:54.030 --> 00:12:56.000
  • The characteristics of the church are that it is
  • 00:12:56.010 --> 00:12:58.250
  • compromised, conceited, and Christ-less.
  • 00:12:58.260 --> 00:13:03.110
  • Notice the counsel that is given to this church,
  • 00:13:03.120 --> 00:13:06.070
  • what should they do?
  • 00:13:06.080 --> 00:13:08.240
  • The God of the universe condescends to give counsel
  • 00:13:08.250 --> 00:13:11.170
  • to this sick, lukewarm church.
  • 00:13:11.180 --> 00:13:13.280
  • As a doctor would prescribe medicine for a sick human body,
  • 00:13:13.290 --> 00:13:17.150
  • so the great physician prescribes help
  • 00:13:17.160 --> 00:13:20.140
  • for this weak spiritual body.
  • 00:13:20.150 --> 00:13:22.230
  • First of all, noticeual body.
  • 00:13:22.240 --> 00:13:23.260
  • the prescription for spiritual poverty.
  • 00:13:23.270 --> 00:13:27.120
  • Verse 18, "I counsel you to buy from me gold refined
  • 00:13:27.130 --> 00:13:32.060
  • in the fire, that you may be rich."
  • 00:13:32.070 --> 00:13:35.150
  • This is ironic.
  • 00:13:35.160 --> 00:13:37.050
  • These Laodiceans were well-endowed with the riches
  • 00:13:37.060 --> 00:13:39.200
  • of the earth.
  • 00:13:39.210 --> 00:13:40.260
  • But what they really needed, they could not buy
  • 00:13:40.270 --> 00:13:43.070
  • with their gold.
  • 00:13:43.080 --> 00:13:44.160
  • It didn't transfer into the currency of heaven.
  • 00:13:44.170 --> 00:13:47.110
  • Isaiah the prophet alludes to this.
  • 00:13:47.120 --> 00:13:49.280
  • He says, "Ho!
  • 00:13:49.290 --> 00:13:51.000
  • Everyone who thirsts, come to the water.
  • 00:13:51.010 --> 00:13:53.210
  • And you who have no money, come buy and eat.
  • 00:13:53.220 --> 00:13:57.230
  • Yes, come, buy wine and milk without money
  • 00:13:57.240 --> 00:14:01.010
  • and without price."
  • 00:14:01.020 --> 00:14:03.030
  • The Laodiceans had a lot of earthly money,
  • 00:14:03.040 --> 00:14:05.260
  • but it didn't do any good in the heavenly realm.
  • 00:14:05.270 --> 00:14:09.280
  • So they couldn't get anything worthwhile with the money they
  • 00:14:09.290 --> 00:14:12.280
  • had accumulated.
  • 00:14:12.290 --> 00:14:14.100
  • And Jesus says, "What you need for your poverty is
  • 00:14:14.110 --> 00:14:17.220
  • some spiritual gold, some spiritual wealth."
  • 00:14:17.230 --> 00:14:22.160
  • Notice the prescription for spiritual nakedness.
  • 00:14:22.170 --> 00:14:25.150
  • Jesus said to this church, "You are poor,
  • 00:14:25.160 --> 00:14:28.050
  • and you are naked."
  • 00:14:28.060 --> 00:14:29.100
  • But notice in verse 18, he says, "I counsel you to buy
  • 00:14:29.110 --> 00:14:32.140
  • white garments, that you might be clothed,
  • 00:14:32.150 --> 00:14:36.020
  • that the shame of your nakedness might not be revealed."
  • 00:14:36.030 --> 00:14:40.000
  • Instead of being clothed with righteous acts
  • 00:14:40.010 --> 00:14:42.100
  • as believers, they thought they were good because they had
  • 00:14:42.110 --> 00:14:45.080
  • a lot of stuff.
  • 00:14:45.090 --> 00:14:46.220
  • And the Bible says that in all reality,
  • 00:14:46.230 --> 00:14:48.140
  • they were just, like, walking around naked, spiritually naked.
  • 00:14:48.150 --> 00:14:55.000
  • The prescription for spiritual blindness, no, he
  • 00:14:55.010 --> 00:14:57.030
  • doesn't miss one, watch this.
  • 00:14:57.040 --> 00:14:59.040
  • "I counsel you to anoint your eyes with eye salve,
  • 00:14:59.050 --> 00:15:03.010
  • that you may see."
  • 00:15:03.020 --> 00:15:05.120
  • In the city of Laodicea, there was a medical center.
  • 00:15:05.130 --> 00:15:09.180
  • And one of the products of that medical center that was
  • 00:15:09.190 --> 00:15:12.130
  • manufactured there, and exported from that medical center
  • 00:15:12.140 --> 00:15:15.240
  • all around the then-known world was a tablet
  • 00:15:15.250 --> 00:15:19.200
  • that the Roman Empire thrived on.
  • 00:15:19.210 --> 00:15:22.050
  • The tablet was called tephra Phrygia, and it was used
  • 00:15:22.060 --> 00:15:26.170
  • to heal a wide range of eye ailments.
  • 00:15:26.180 --> 00:15:30.190
  • The users would crush the tablet, mix it
  • 00:15:30.200 --> 00:15:33.060
  • with a small amount of water, and put it on their eyes,
  • 00:15:33.070 --> 00:15:36.240
  • and wait for the healing to take place.
  • 00:15:36.250 --> 00:15:39.250
  • The tephra Phrygia was a famous eye salve
  • 00:15:39.260 --> 00:15:43.020
  • that originated in the city of Laodicea.
  • 00:15:43.030 --> 00:15:46.050
  • And Jesus was reminding these blind Laodiceans
  • 00:15:46.060 --> 00:15:49.210
  • that they needed more than the tephra Phrygia to see.
  • 00:15:49.220 --> 00:15:53.010
  • They needed the truth of God, which only Christ
  • 00:15:53.020 --> 00:15:55.210
  • could bring them.
  • 00:15:55.220 --> 00:15:56.250
  • While they may have had good eyesight physically,
  • 00:15:56.260 --> 00:15:58.270
  • they were blind spiritually.
  • 00:15:58.280 --> 00:16:01.190
  • And what informs the way you see the world, men and women?
  • 00:16:01.200 --> 00:16:04.120
  • Do you view the world through the lenses given to you
  • 00:16:04.130 --> 00:16:06.260
  • by the Holy Spirit, and have you ground those lenses
  • 00:16:06.270 --> 00:16:09.200
  • in the pages of the Holy Scripture?
  • 00:16:09.210 --> 00:16:11.240
  • Or has the spirit of the age placed a set of lenses
  • 00:16:11.250 --> 00:16:15.050
  • over your eyes, that you do not even realize
  • 00:16:15.060 --> 00:16:17.040
  • are there?
  • 00:16:17.050 --> 00:16:18.100
  • So many Christians today have forgotten, have forgotten
  • 00:16:18.110 --> 00:16:22.220
  • what it means to have spiritual insight.
  • 00:16:22.230 --> 00:16:26.170
  • We've lost our spiritual eyesight.
  • 00:16:26.180 --> 00:16:29.040
  • In our country now, even among Christians,
  • 00:16:29.050 --> 00:16:32.040
  • we don't look at life as Bible-believing Christians.
  • 00:16:32.050 --> 00:16:35.190
  • We look at life through the secular lenses
  • 00:16:35.200 --> 00:16:38.020
  • we have adopted by living in this messed up world.
  • 00:16:38.030 --> 00:16:42.170
  • And so, when we see something happening
  • 00:16:42.180 --> 00:16:44.100
  • in our world, if we're not careful, we wait
  • 00:16:44.110 --> 00:16:46.290
  • to see what the pundits say about it, and then we
  • 00:16:47.000 --> 00:16:49.150
  • sort of give it a little Christian pat
  • 00:16:49.160 --> 00:16:51.120
  • on the back, and we adopt the pundit's view.
  • 00:16:51.130 --> 00:16:54.290
  • We get to the place where we're willing to say that things
  • 00:16:55.000 --> 00:16:56.250
  • that are wrong, that we know are wrong, are
  • 00:16:56.260 --> 00:16:59.140
  • maybe not as wrong as we thought they were.
  • 00:16:59.150 --> 00:17:01.120
  • Maybe they're almost right.
  • 00:17:01.130 --> 00:17:04.000
  • And so, that which is good we call evil, and that which evil
  • 00:17:04.010 --> 00:17:06.160
  • we end up calling good.
  • 00:17:06.170 --> 00:17:08.220
  • Because our eyesight has been tested and ruined
  • 00:17:08.230 --> 00:17:13.020
  • by not spending time in the Lord's Word.
  • 00:17:13.030 --> 00:17:15.240
  • So that we keep our spiritual lenses clean,
  • 00:17:15.250 --> 00:17:18.240
  • we allow our eyes to be fogged over with the mess of the world.
  • 00:17:18.250 --> 00:17:22.170
  • And then when things happen that we don't understand, or we
  • 00:17:22.180 --> 00:17:25.060
  • hear people asking about them, we have no clue, because we
  • 00:17:25.070 --> 00:17:30.110
  • haven't seen things spiritually for so long, we wouldn't know
  • 00:17:30.120 --> 00:17:33.050
  • a spiritual truth if it jumped up and bit us.
  • 00:17:33.060 --> 00:17:37.270
  • The prescription for spiritual blindness
  • 00:17:37.280 --> 00:17:40.290
  • is spiritual eyesight.
  • 00:17:41.000 --> 00:17:43.130
  • Take the tephra Phrygia of God, the tablet from the Word of God.
  • 00:17:43.140 --> 00:17:49.070
  • Notice the prescription for spiritual compromise.
  • 00:17:49.080 --> 00:17:52.220
  • It says in verse 19,mise.
  • 00:17:52.230 --> 00:17:54.090
  • "As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten.
  • 00:17:54.100 --> 00:17:58.280
  • Therefore be zealous and repent."
  • 00:17:58.290 --> 00:18:01.120
  • It is interesting that the only other church
  • 00:18:01.130 --> 00:18:03.140
  • that Jesus explicitly says he loves is the church
  • 00:18:03.150 --> 00:18:07.070
  • at Philadelphia, interestingly enough.
  • 00:18:07.080 --> 00:18:09.210
  • Jesus loves the church of Laodicea.
  • 00:18:09.220 --> 00:18:13.170
  • He loves this church that's lost its way.
  • 00:18:13.180 --> 00:18:16.180
  • He loves this church of Europe that no longer understands
  • 00:18:16.190 --> 00:18:20.070
  • who Jesus is, or even wants his name mentioned.
  • 00:18:20.080 --> 00:18:24.280
  • He loves the culture of America, where we're not sure
  • 00:18:24.290 --> 00:18:28.120
  • whether God belongs in a program or out of a program,
  • 00:18:28.130 --> 00:18:31.150
  • whether he can be mentioned in an organizational meal.
  • 00:18:31.160 --> 00:18:34.130
  • He loves this culture.
  • 00:18:34.140 --> 00:18:35.160
  • He doesn't love what this culture does.
  • 00:18:35.170 --> 00:18:38.220
  • Look down at your verse again, "As many as I love, I rebuke
  • 00:18:38.230 --> 00:18:43.230
  • and chasten."
  • 00:18:43.240 --> 00:18:46.020
  • He's speaking to the people in this church.
  • 00:18:46.030 --> 00:18:49.000
  • He's saying, "I love you.
  • 00:18:49.010 --> 00:18:50.090
  • And the reason I rebuke you is because of my love."
  • 00:18:50.100 --> 00:18:53.240
  • If Jesus did not call people to repentance, he would be
  • 00:18:53.250 --> 00:18:56.180
  • sending them a message.
  • 00:18:56.190 --> 00:18:57.280
  • Do you know what that message would be?
  • 00:18:57.290 --> 00:19:00.050
  • The message would be, "Go to hell."
  • 00:19:00.060 --> 00:19:03.190
  • Rebuke here in the text describes pointing out
  • 00:19:03.200 --> 00:19:06.020
  • a problem, and convincing someone to do something
  • 00:19:06.030 --> 00:19:08.190
  • about it.
  • 00:19:08.200 --> 00:19:09.290
  • Chasten is a reference to correction or punishment,
  • 00:19:10.000 --> 00:19:12.150
  • with the purpose of training an individual.
  • 00:19:12.160 --> 00:19:15.130
  • A zeal or eagerness to get right with God must replace
  • 00:19:15.140 --> 00:19:18.160
  • the lukewarm spirituality that characterized the church,
  • 00:19:18.170 --> 00:19:22.140
  • and the zeal will be seen in repentance.
  • 00:19:22.150 --> 00:19:25.050
  • "Wow, Pastor, this is about me.
  • 00:19:25.060 --> 00:19:28.050
  • I used to be on fire for God.
  • 00:19:28.060 --> 00:19:30.220
  • I used to want to serve God more than anything else
  • 00:19:30.230 --> 00:19:33.110
  • in my life, and I've gotten warped into this culture.
  • 00:19:33.120 --> 00:19:37.060
  • So now, I'm just like these people,
  • 00:19:37.070 --> 00:19:39.020
  • I'm lukewarm too.
  • 00:19:39.030 --> 00:19:42.060
  • The things of God aren't nearly as important to me
  • 00:19:42.070 --> 00:19:44.150
  • as they once were, nor are they as important to me
  • 00:19:44.160 --> 00:19:47.020
  • as now I wish they were."
  • 00:19:47.030 --> 00:19:49.110
  • Where do you go from that, people?
  • 00:19:49.120 --> 00:19:51.170
  • What do you do about a compromising church?
  • 00:19:51.180 --> 00:19:54.130
  • What do you do for spiritual compromise?
  • 00:19:54.140 --> 00:19:56.150
  • There's only one thing you can do: repent of it.
  • 00:19:56.160 --> 00:19:59.200
  • Ask God to forgive you of it.
  • 00:19:59.210 --> 00:20:02.110
  • Get on your knees when you get home tonight and say,
  • 00:20:02.120 --> 00:20:04.070
  • "Lord God, I am sick and tired of only being
  • 00:20:04.080 --> 00:20:06.150
  • halfway into my faith.
  • 00:20:06.160 --> 00:20:08.080
  • From now on, I want to be all in, all in, Lord,
  • 00:20:08.090 --> 00:20:12.210
  • with everything I've got."
  • 00:20:12.220 --> 00:20:14.270
  • The prescription for spiritual poverty,
  • 00:20:14.280 --> 00:20:16.250
  • for spiritual nakedness, for spiritual blindness,
  • 00:20:16.260 --> 00:20:20.180
  • and for spiritual compromise, and now notice
  • 00:20:20.190 --> 00:20:23.020
  • lastly Revelation 3:20 again, "Behold, I stand at the door
  • 00:20:23.030 --> 00:20:28.000
  • and I knock.
  • 00:20:28.010 --> 00:20:29.230
  • If anyone hears my voice and opens the door,
  • 00:20:29.240 --> 00:20:33.020
  • I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with me."
  • 00:20:33.030 --> 00:20:36.230
  • There is not a more wonderful invitation
  • 00:20:36.240 --> 00:20:39.050
  • in all of the Word of God.
  • 00:20:39.060 --> 00:20:41.190
  • There are only 33 words in this English version
  • 00:20:41.200 --> 00:20:45.030
  • of this verse, and all except three words are
  • 00:20:45.040 --> 00:20:47.280
  • short, crisp words of one syllable.
  • 00:20:47.290 --> 00:20:51.170
  • They are the words "Behold, any, open."
  • 00:20:51.180 --> 00:20:54.090
  • There's an amazing strength and simplicity
  • 00:20:54.100 --> 00:20:56.130
  • in this invitation.
  • 00:20:56.140 --> 00:20:58.000
  • In his other invitations, Jesus called men to come to him.
  • 00:20:58.010 --> 00:21:01.070
  • In this invitation, he comes in person and stands at the door
  • 00:21:01.080 --> 00:21:04.130
  • to knock.
  • 00:21:04.140 --> 00:21:06.060
  • Christ is here pictured in our relationship
  • 00:21:06.070 --> 00:21:08.110
  • to the church, as well as to the individual,
  • 00:21:08.120 --> 00:21:10.240
  • and he stands outside of the professing church
  • 00:21:10.250 --> 00:21:13.110
  • that claims to know Jesus but obviously doesn't,
  • 00:21:13.120 --> 00:21:16.050
  • and here's Jesus knocking at the door, trying to get
  • 00:21:16.060 --> 00:21:19.030
  • into his own church.
  • 00:21:19.040 --> 00:21:22.050
  • Although a lot of people, as I mentioned,
  • 00:21:22.060 --> 00:21:24.130
  • have used this verse as an evangelistic call
  • 00:21:24.140 --> 00:21:26.240
  • to unbelievers, and I think by way of application
  • 00:21:26.250 --> 00:21:29.120
  • that's certainly okay, what it really is is Christ
  • 00:21:29.130 --> 00:21:34.050
  • and his church in the last days.
  • 00:21:34.060 --> 00:21:37.200
  • The church has kicked Christ out of its programming,
  • 00:21:37.210 --> 00:21:41.070
  • out of its messages, out of its ministry,
  • 00:21:41.080 --> 00:21:43.270
  • out of its ordinances, out of its very being.
  • 00:21:43.280 --> 00:21:49.150
  • And Jesus Christ wants back in.
  • 00:21:49.160 --> 00:21:52.280
  • And he's knocking at the door.
  • 00:21:52.290 --> 00:21:54.180
  • We should be knocking at his door; he's knocking
  • 00:21:54.190 --> 00:21:56.220
  • at ours.
  • 00:21:56.230 --> 00:21:59.070
  • The seven letters end with these words, "To him
  • 00:21:59.080 --> 00:22:02.030
  • who overcomes, I will grant to sit with me on my throne.
  • 00:22:02.040 --> 00:22:05.280
  • I also overcome and sat down with my Father on his throne.
  • 00:22:05.290 --> 00:22:09.200
  • He who has an ear, let him hear."
  • 00:22:09.210 --> 00:22:13.180
  • These letters, and especially the last one,
  • 00:22:13.190 --> 00:22:16.210
  • men and women, teach us one important lesson.
  • 00:22:16.220 --> 00:22:20.140
  • Listen carefully.
  • 00:22:20.150 --> 00:22:22.190
  • The church must be Jesus-driven.
  • 00:22:22.200 --> 00:22:27.050
  • I've heard about seeker-driven churches,
  • 00:22:27.060 --> 00:22:30.030
  • and small group-driven churches.
  • 00:22:30.040 --> 00:22:32.180
  • But the church in this age, for it to be of any viability
  • 00:22:32.190 --> 00:22:37.240
  • at all, must be a Jesus-driven church.
  • 00:22:37.250 --> 00:22:41.160
  • If the church is not that, it is not the church of Jesus Christ,
  • 00:22:41.170 --> 00:22:46.000
  • and Jesus Christ is on the outside,
  • 00:22:46.010 --> 00:22:48.140
  • still knocking at the door.
  • 00:22:48.150 --> 00:22:50.120
  • I'm here to tell you Jesus is in this church.
  • 00:22:50.130 --> 00:22:53.180
  • He's in this church.
  • 00:22:53.190 --> 00:22:57.070
  • And it behooves us, men and women, to commit ourselves
  • 00:22:57.080 --> 00:23:00.130
  • to one another that Jesus Christ never be
  • 00:23:00.140 --> 00:23:03.040
  • pushed to the circumference of this church, but that he
  • 00:23:03.050 --> 00:23:05.200
  • always maintains his position at the center.
  • 00:23:05.210 --> 00:23:09.150
  • "My hope is built on nothing less
  • 00:23:09.160 --> 00:23:12.260
  • than Jesus' blood and righteousness.
  • 00:23:12.270 --> 00:23:16.130
  • I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
  • 00:23:16.140 --> 00:23:19.170
  • but wholly lean on Jesus' name.
  • 00:23:19.180 --> 00:23:22.150
  • On Christ the solid rock I stand.
  • 00:23:22.160 --> 00:23:25.240
  • All other ground is sinking sand, all other ground
  • 00:23:25.250 --> 00:23:31.000
  • is sinking sand!" May God help us to commit
  • 00:23:31.010 --> 00:23:34.180
  • to one another that the church will not become lukewarm,
  • 00:23:34.190 --> 00:23:39.170
  • but will continue to have zeal for the things of God.
  • 00:23:39.180 --> 00:23:42.080
  • And may God double our zeal, and may God infuse within us
  • 00:23:42.090 --> 00:23:45.220
  • even greater desire to do his will.
  • 00:23:45.230 --> 00:23:48.050
  • We stand in great need in our culture,
  • 00:23:48.060 --> 00:23:50.150
  • and in our country, and in our communities.
  • 00:23:50.160 --> 00:23:52.210
  • And here is the thing that we need:
  • 00:23:52.220 --> 00:23:55.060
  • Jesus is the answer.
  • 00:23:55.070 --> 00:23:57.050
  • We have the answer; what's the problem?
  • 00:23:57.060 --> 00:24:01.040
  • We have the answer; what is the need?
  • 00:24:01.050 --> 00:24:04.050
  • As we employ our ministry in the name of Jesus,
  • 00:24:04.060 --> 00:24:07.210
  • he will bless us, and we will be continually on the edge
  • 00:24:07.220 --> 00:24:11.250
  • of adventure as we walk with him into these new days.
  • 00:24:11.260 --> 00:24:16.180
  • announcer: Dr. Jeremiah will return to close today's
  • 00:24:16.190 --> 00:24:19.020
  • program right after this.
  • 00:24:19.030 --> 00:24:21.020
  • announcer: Revelation is a mysterious book full of signs
  • 00:24:24.100 --> 00:24:26.260
  • and symbols, portraying things seen and unseen
  • 00:24:26.270 --> 00:24:30.040
  • in the world and those of the world to come,
  • 00:24:30.050 --> 00:24:33.000

  • announcer: And now, with one last word for today's
  • 00:25:44.020 --> 00:25:46.100
  • program, here is Dr. Jeremiah.
  • 00:25:46.110 --> 00:25:48.230
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Most of us have received a well-deserved rebuke
  • 00:25:49.210 --> 00:25:52.180
  • or two sometime during our life.
  • 00:25:52.190 --> 00:25:55.030
  • It's never pleasant, often embarrassing.
  • 00:25:55.040 --> 00:25:58.270
  • But in hindsight, if we are wise, the rebuke
  • 00:25:58.280 --> 00:26:02.020
  • will have been good for us.
  • 00:26:02.030 --> 00:26:04.280
  • The Bible itself is a form of correction to humanity.
  • 00:26:04.290 --> 00:26:09.040
  • It says that it's impossible to please God
  • 00:26:09.050 --> 00:26:12.010
  • by our own efforts.
  • 00:26:12.020 --> 00:26:13.090
  • So how do we please him?
  • 00:26:13.100 --> 00:26:15.240
  • By confessing our need for his Son Jesus Christ
  • 00:26:15.250 --> 00:26:18.230
  • as Savior and Lord.
  • 00:26:18.240 --> 00:26:22.080
  • I encourage you to let me send you two Turning Point resources
  • 00:26:22.090 --> 00:26:26.110
  • to help you in your thinking: a booklet calledPoint resources
  • 00:26:26.120 --> 00:26:29.290
  • "Your Greatest Turning Point," and our monthly
  • 00:26:30.000 --> 00:26:32.150
  • devotional magazine Turning Points.
  • 00:26:32.160 --> 00:26:35.110
  • These biblically-based resources will encourage you
  • 00:26:35.120 --> 00:26:39.070
  • in your desire to know Christ, and we'll send them to you free
  • 00:26:39.080 --> 00:26:42.160
  • of charge if you will contact us here at "Turning Point" today.
  • 00:26:42.170 --> 00:26:48.040
  • announcer: Next time, on "Turning Point ."
  • 00:26:48.050 --> 00:26:50.210
  • Dr. Jeremiah: You can't understand what it's like
  • 00:26:50.220 --> 00:26:52.080
  • to be saved unless you've been saved.
  • 00:26:52.090 --> 00:26:54.120
  • Can I get a witness?
  • 00:26:54.130 --> 00:26:56.000
  • And you'll never be able to praise God in heaven
  • 00:26:56.010 --> 00:26:58.040
  • unless you've been saved because you won't be there.
  • 00:26:58.050 --> 00:27:01.170
  • But if you're there as a part of the church, your worship
