  • Somebody i care about, right, for somebody that's close to me?
  • 00:04:27.985 --> 00:04:31.356

  • 00:04:31.356 --> 00:04:32.924

  • 00:04:32.924 --> 00:04:36.494

  • Regardless of how unreasonable they may seem.
  • 00:04:40.298 --> 00:04:43.434

  • Praying for miracles.
  • 00:04:46.437 --> 00:04:47.772

  • 00:04:47.772 --> 00:04:49.907

  • 00:04:49.907 --> 00:04:51.275

  • Your money.
  • 00:04:54.679 --> 00:04:56.013
  • There's no formula because--and this should be comforting,
  • 00:04:56.013 --> 00:04:58.750
  • Not discouraging.
  • 00:04:58.750 --> 00:05:00.118
  • Because miracles are at god's discretion to further god's
  • 00:05:00.118 --> 00:05:04.655
  • Purposes in the world.
  • 00:05:04.655 --> 00:05:06.724
  • So the good news is you can't control your heavenly father
  • 00:05:06.724 --> 00:05:10.461
  • Because he is large and in charge.
  • 00:05:10.461 --> 00:05:12.730
  • And we are invited to accept that.
  • 00:05:12.730 --> 00:05:17.435
  • So here--here's the thing.
  • 00:05:17.435 --> 00:05:19.704
  • While both the old and new testament underscore the fact
  • 00:05:19.704 --> 00:05:22.039
  • That miracles are for god's discretion, for god's purposes,
  • 00:05:22.039 --> 00:05:25.276
  • The old and new testament also underscores something else as it
  • 00:05:25.276 --> 00:05:27.879
  • Relates to miracles.
  • 00:05:27.879 --> 00:05:29.480
  • That while there is no formula, there is--and this is what we're
  • 00:05:29.480 --> 00:05:33.551
  • Going to talk about.
  • 00:05:33.551 --> 00:05:34.919
  • There is a posture.
  • 00:05:34.919 --> 00:05:36.320

  • It's the posture of--we talk about it all the time.
  • 00:05:58.376 --> 00:06:01.012
  • It's the posture of, "thy will--not my will, thy will be

  • Done when it makes sense and when it doesn't."
  • 00:06:05.383 --> 00:06:09.754
  • And the reason that that posture puts us in the miracle zone is
  • 00:06:09.754 --> 00:06:13.558
  • Exactly what i've stated twice already.
  • 00:06:13.558 --> 00:06:15.359

  • Father in heaven, we are living our lives in sync with his
  • 00:06:23.868 --> 00:06:28.072
  • Purposes on earth, which means you are in line for god to do
  • 00:06:28.072 --> 00:06:32.643
  • The unusual through you if it furthers his purposes on earth.
  • 00:06:32.643 --> 00:06:37.048
  • Now, there are so many examples of this in the old and the
  • 00:06:37.048 --> 00:06:40.518
  • New testament.
  • 00:06:40.518 --> 00:06:41.886
  • And i thought it would be fun to go back into the old testament
  • 00:06:41.886 --> 00:06:44.055
  • And choose a story that you may be somewhat familiar with.
  • 00:06:44.055 --> 00:06:47.892
  • If you didn't grow up in church, you may have never heard this
  • 00:06:47.892 --> 00:06:50.394
  • Story before.
  • 00:06:50.394 --> 00:06:51.762
  • It doesn't get a lot of airplay, but it's a very significant
  • 00:06:51.762 --> 00:06:54.098
  • Story and it illustrates from the old testament this
  • 00:06:54.098 --> 00:06:56.834
  • Very principle.
  • 00:06:56.834 --> 00:06:58.669
  • Now, i'm going to tell you the story before i read you the
  • 00:06:58.669 --> 00:07:01.339
  • Story, and then i'll tell you why i told you the story before
  • 00:07:01.339 --> 00:07:03.241
  • I read you the story.
  • 00:07:03.241 --> 00:07:04.609
  • But the main character in this story is a military leader who
  • 00:07:04.609 --> 00:07:07.778
  • Was asked to do something way below his status,
  • 00:07:07.778 --> 00:07:11.449
  • Way below his dignity.
  • 00:07:11.449 --> 00:07:12.783
  • In fact, it was--what he was asked to do was
  • 00:07:12.783 --> 00:07:14.852
  • Really insulting.
  • 00:07:14.852 --> 00:07:16.220
  • It made absolutely no sense.
  • 00:07:16.220 --> 00:07:17.555
  • And so naturally, he resisted.
  • 00:07:17.555 --> 00:07:19.857
  • It's like, "you know, it's no way i'm going to do that."
  • 00:07:19.857 --> 00:07:21.893
  • And then at the last minute, some wise people came around him
  • 00:07:21.893 --> 00:07:24.095
  • And they said, "at least, hey, maybe you should try this."
  • 00:07:24.095 --> 00:07:26.964
  • And so he changes his mind and he does the thing he's been
  • 00:07:26.964 --> 00:07:30.468
  • Asked to do, and as a result of that, he experienced a miracle
  • 00:07:30.468 --> 00:07:36.274
  • That he would have missed otherwise.
  • 00:07:36.274 --> 00:07:38.175
  • And my point in spoiling the story before i tell you the
  • 00:07:38.175 --> 00:07:42.246
  • Story goes back to something i've told you so many times and
  • 00:07:42.246 --> 00:07:45.850
  • I've--you know, i'm going to
  • 00:07:45.850 --> 00:07:47.184
  • Come back to this over and over and over.
  • 00:07:47.184 --> 00:07:48.519
  • And i guess it's kind of a life message or a life theme for me
  • 00:07:48.519 --> 00:07:51.489
  • That i've experienced, and many of you have experienced as well.
  • 00:07:51.489 --> 00:07:54.358
  • And that's this.
  • 00:07:54.358 --> 00:07:55.793
  • You have no idea, you have no idea what hangs in the balance
  • 00:07:55.793 --> 00:08:01.532
  • Of your decision to submit to and to follow jesus.
  • 00:08:01.532 --> 00:08:05.202
  • You have no idea what's on the other side of your decision to
  • 00:08:05.202 --> 00:08:09.840
  • Submit to and to follow jesus.
  • 00:08:09.840 --> 00:08:12.944
  • We think we do because when we're faced with decisions and
  • 00:08:12.944 --> 00:08:16.113
  • It's like, "there's no way i would do that.
  • 00:08:16.113 --> 00:08:17.548
  • Nobody does it that way. that never works out.
  • 00:08:17.548 --> 00:08:19.250
  • I know where that's going to go," we all think we're fortune
  • 00:08:19.250 --> 00:08:21.819
  • Tellers, that we can predict our own futures, but the
  • 00:08:21.819 --> 00:08:24.221
  • Reality--and if you've been a christian for a long time, you
  • 00:08:24.221 --> 00:08:27.024
  • Get this.
  • 00:08:27.024 --> 00:08:28.392
  • You have stories.
  • 00:08:28.392 --> 00:08:29.727
  • You really don't, i really don't know what's on the other side of
  • 00:08:29.727 --> 00:08:32.897
  • A decision to follow jesus or to say yes to our heavenly father
  • 00:08:32.897 --> 00:08:37.068
  • When he asks us or requires us to do something unusual out of
  • 00:08:37.068 --> 00:08:40.338
  • The ordinary, maybe something nobody else is doing or to step
  • 00:08:40.338 --> 00:08:43.207
  • Into something we don't feel we're prepared for.
  • 00:08:43.207 --> 00:08:46.110
  • So saying yes positions you for the unexpected, perhaps the
  • 00:08:46.110 --> 00:08:51.282
  • Unexplainable, perhaps a miracle.
  • 00:08:51.282 --> 00:08:55.152
  • So if you're wrestling with a really difficult decision, a
  • 00:08:55.152 --> 00:09:00.057
  • Decision that may have a bit of an ethical or a moral edge to
  • 00:09:00.057 --> 00:09:03.894
  • It, as you think about your dilemma, you think about it in
  • 00:09:03.894 --> 00:09:07.732
  • Terms of two options, but you aren't, you aren't just choosing
  • 00:09:07.732 --> 00:09:12.770
  • Between two options, you are choosing a posture.
  • 00:09:12.770 --> 00:09:17.008
  • And this is what we miss and this is why this story is so
  • 00:09:17.008 --> 00:09:19.343
  • Important and this is why we're closing this series with
  • 00:09:19.343 --> 00:09:22.146
  • This topic.
  • 00:09:22.146 --> 00:09:23.481
  • You're--we think in terms of options, "i can do a,
  • 00:09:23.481 --> 00:09:25.049
  • I can b--do b, i can do this, i can do that."
  • 00:09:25.049 --> 00:09:27.718
  • But in reality, if there's a moral or ethical component to
  • 00:09:27.718 --> 00:09:31.288
  • The decision you're wrestling with, you are actually choosing
  • 00:09:31.288 --> 00:09:34.592
  • A posture.
  • 00:09:34.592 --> 00:09:35.960
  • You're choosing a posture of surrender to your heavenly
  • 00:09:35.960 --> 00:09:37.962
  • Father or you're choosing a posture of independence.
  • 00:09:37.962 --> 00:09:40.164
  • "it's my life. i do whatever i want."
  • 00:09:40.164 --> 00:09:42.199
  • That's--it's you're choosing a posture between, "thy will be
  • 00:09:42.199 --> 00:09:44.969
  • Done or my will be done."
  • 00:09:44.969 --> 00:09:47.638
  • And one of those postures, the posture of surrender is an
  • 00:09:47.638 --> 00:09:51.575
  • Invitation for your heavenly father to intervene in your life
  • 00:09:51.575 --> 00:09:56.547
  • Because you don't know what's on the other side of your surrender
  • 00:09:56.547 --> 00:09:59.684
  • To your heavenly father or to your savior.
  • 00:09:59.684 --> 00:10:02.453
  • And i'm pleading with you today, regardless of your religious
  • 00:10:02.453 --> 00:10:05.556
  • Background, regardless of where you are on the whole--you know,
  • 00:10:05.556 --> 00:10:07.925
  • Whole faith spectrum, you're new, you've been a christian for
  • 00:10:07.925 --> 00:10:10.194
  • A long time, to adopt the posture of surrender to your
  • 00:10:10.194 --> 00:10:13.864
  • Heavenly father and to your king because it positions you for the
  • 00:10:13.864 --> 00:10:17.101
  • Unusual, and you don't know what hangs in the balance of your
  • 00:10:17.101 --> 00:10:21.539
  • Decision to follow jesus.
  • 00:10:21.539 --> 00:10:23.340
  • So all that to say this.
  • 00:10:23.340 --> 00:10:24.809
  • This is not simply a story for us, this is a story about us.
  • 00:10:24.809 --> 00:10:33.217
  • And i think that'll become clear as i tell you the whole story.
  • 00:10:33.217 --> 00:10:35.386
  • So from the old testament book of 2 kings, this is chapter 5.
  • 00:10:35.386 --> 00:10:40.257
  • This takes place in the ninth century bc, so way before jesus
  • 00:10:40.257 --> 00:10:44.061
  • And long after the kingdom of israel has been established.
  • 00:10:44.061 --> 00:10:47.665
  • And here's how the story opens.
  • 00:10:47.665 --> 00:10:49.233
  • And this is the name you may be somewhat familiar with if,
  • 00:10:49.233 --> 00:10:51.535
  • Like me, you grew up in church, here's how it goes.
  • 00:10:51.535 --> 00:10:54.004
  • The text says this: "now naaman was commander of the army of the
  • 00:10:54.004 --> 00:10:57.308
  • King of aram."
  • 00:10:57.308 --> 00:10:59.543
  • Aram was a country, kind of a country, way north of israel in
  • 00:10:59.543 --> 00:11:02.780
  • Modern day syria.
  • 00:11:02.780 --> 00:11:04.515
  • So naaman was the commander of the army of the king of aram and
  • 00:11:04.515 --> 00:11:08.052
  • He was a great man.
  • 00:11:08.052 --> 00:11:09.420
  • That means everybody in his nation knew him and everybody
  • 00:11:09.420 --> 00:11:11.889
  • South of him knew him, as we're going to discover.
  • 00:11:11.889 --> 00:11:13.724
  • "he was a great man in the sight of his master," who was the
  • 00:11:13.724 --> 00:11:15.893
  • King, "and highly regarded, because through him the lord had
  • 00:11:15.893 --> 00:11:19.230
  • Given victory to aram."
  • 00:11:19.230 --> 00:11:20.564
  • So aram's kind of the military big dog on the map in this
  • 00:11:20.564 --> 00:11:23.801
  • Region of the world.
  • 00:11:23.801 --> 00:11:25.469
  • The text goes on to say that naaman was a valiant soldier,
  • 00:11:25.469 --> 00:11:28.939
  • But he had a problem.
  • 00:11:28.939 --> 00:11:31.909
  • He had leprosy.
  • 00:11:31.909 --> 00:11:33.444
  • And in ancient times this was considered contagious.
  • 00:11:33.444 --> 00:11:36.147
  • In ancient times this was considered a long
  • 00:11:36.147 --> 00:11:38.716
  • Death sentence.
  • 00:11:38.716 --> 00:11:40.050
  • Unsightly sores, many people with leprosy eventually lost
  • 00:11:40.050 --> 00:11:43.654
  • Their eyesight, they lost the feeling in their fingers and
  • 00:11:43.654 --> 00:11:46.023
  • Toes and extremities, and consequently they lost their
  • 00:11:46.023 --> 00:11:49.026
  • Extremities oftentimes.
  • 00:11:49.026 --> 00:11:50.427
  • Again, a slow death sentence, but what made it even worse to
  • 00:11:50.427 --> 00:11:54.298
  • Some extent, if it could be worse, is it included alienation
  • 00:11:54.298 --> 00:11:57.701
  • From society and from your family because everyone was
  • 00:11:57.701 --> 00:12:00.738
  • Afraid of you.
  • 00:12:00.738 --> 00:12:02.106
  • You became sort of a monster, an outcast, which it made things
  • 00:12:02.106 --> 00:12:04.742
  • Even worse.
  • 00:12:04.742 --> 00:12:06.544
  • Well, fortunately, naaman's wife--after he got this
  • 00:12:06.544 --> 00:12:09.079
  • Diagnosis, naaman's wife had a slave girl that had been
  • 00:12:09.079 --> 00:12:12.883
  • Captured in one of the border skirmishes between israel to the
  • 00:12:12.883 --> 00:12:16.120
  • South and aram to the north.
  • 00:12:16.120 --> 00:12:17.488
  • And she finds out with the family that naaman has leprosy,
  • 00:12:17.488 --> 00:12:20.524
  • And she goes to her mistress, her--the lady who controlled her
  • 00:12:20.524 --> 00:12:23.427
  • Or basically owned her, and she said to naaman's wife, she said,
  • 00:12:23.427 --> 00:12:27.665
  • "if only my master," naaman, "would see the prophet who was
  • 00:12:27.665 --> 00:12:31.535
  • In samaria."
  • 00:12:31.535 --> 00:12:32.903
  • South in israel.
  • 00:12:32.903 --> 00:12:34.238
  • "he," the prophet, "would cure naaman of his leprosy."
  • 00:12:34.238 --> 00:12:37.875
  • So naaman's wife says, "hey, this is a long shot, but, you
  • 00:12:37.875 --> 00:12:41.045
  • Know, so and so here says there's a miracle worker.
  • 00:12:41.045 --> 00:12:43.981
  • There's somebody that can do magic in israel.
  • 00:12:43.981 --> 00:12:47.184
  • You know, it's worth a shot."
  • 00:12:47.184 --> 00:12:48.519
  • So naaman goes to his boss, king ben-hadad, who's the king of
  • 00:12:48.519 --> 00:12:51.889
  • Aram, and says, "hey, it's worth a shot."
  • 00:12:51.889 --> 00:12:54.925
  • So king ben-hadad's like, "absolutely.
  • 00:12:54.925 --> 00:12:56.694
  • You're a national treasure.
  • 00:12:56.694 --> 00:12:58.028
  • You're so valuable to us."
  • 00:12:58.028 --> 00:12:59.763
  • So king ben-hadad writes a letter to the king, king joram
  • 00:12:59.763 --> 00:13:04.301
  • Of israel to take--to send it with naaman to go down there and
  • 00:13:04.301 --> 00:13:07.671
  • Ask to be healed, to ask for a miracle.
  • 00:13:07.671 --> 00:13:09.807
  • And we actually have a copy of the letter.
  • 00:13:09.807 --> 00:13:11.408
  • Here's what the letter said.
  • 00:13:11.408 --> 00:13:12.776
  • It said, "with this letter--" this is from the king of aram.
  • 00:13:12.776 --> 00:13:15.779
  • "with this letter i'm sending my servant naaman to you, that
  • 00:13:15.779 --> 00:13:19.316
  • You," the king, "may cure him of his leprosy."
  • 00:13:19.316 --> 00:13:22.286
  • So he got a little bit confused.
  • 00:13:22.286 --> 00:13:23.687
  • Something got confused in translation.
  • 00:13:23.687 --> 00:13:25.489
  • So then the king gives naaman some gold and some silver and
  • 00:13:25.489 --> 00:13:29.426
  • Some changes of clothes.
  • 00:13:29.426 --> 00:13:30.794
  • So this is basically, "hey, if you cure naaman, here's a reward
  • 00:13:30.794 --> 00:13:34.598
  • For, you know, helping us out."
  • 00:13:34.598 --> 00:13:36.100
  • So naaman loads up the gold and the silver and the changes of
  • 00:13:36.100 --> 00:13:39.036
  • Clothes on several wagons.
  • 00:13:39.036 --> 00:13:41.005
  • He's got soldiers with him, it's like an entourage, and he heads
  • 00:13:41.005 --> 00:13:44.608
  • South to see the king.
  • 00:13:44.608 --> 00:13:47.111
  • So he has an audience with the king of israel.
  • 00:13:47.111 --> 00:13:49.113
  • The king of israel reads the letter from the king of aram.
  • 00:13:49.113 --> 00:13:52.283
  • And the text says that when he read the letter, he tore
  • 00:13:52.283 --> 00:13:55.619
  • His robe.
  • 00:13:55.619 --> 00:13:56.954
  • This is a sign of anguish and mourning.
  • 00:13:56.954 --> 00:13:59.390
  • And he's like, "oh, no.
  • 00:13:59.390 --> 00:14:01.792
  • Did--wait, wait.
  • 00:14:01.792 --> 00:14:03.127
  • Does king ben-hadad think that i'm god?
  • 00:14:03.127 --> 00:14:05.629
  • Does king ben-hadad think that i'm a god that i can actually
  • 00:14:05.629 --> 00:14:08.299
  • Cure somebody of leprosy?"
  • 00:14:08.299 --> 00:14:10.301
  • And he's so distraught.
  • 00:14:10.301 --> 00:14:11.702
  • Then he's like, "ah, i know what's going on here.
  • 00:14:11.702 --> 00:14:15.739
  • He knows i can't cure anybody of leprosy.
  • 00:14:15.739 --> 00:14:18.842
  • He knows that i'm going to say i can't do it.
  • 00:14:18.842 --> 00:14:20.744
  • And then naaman's going to return north, and then king
  • 00:14:20.744 --> 00:14:23.580
  • Ben-hadad's going to use this as an excuse to come over our
  • 00:14:23.580 --> 00:14:26.250
  • Borders and break our treaty.
  • 00:14:26.250 --> 00:14:28.252
  • Now i know what's up."
  • 00:14:28.252 --> 00:14:29.620
  • So he is just distraught and stalls, and he's trying to
  • 00:14:29.620 --> 00:14:32.423
  • Figure out, "what should i do with this situation?"
  • 00:14:32.423 --> 00:14:35.059
  • Meanwhile, somebody slips out the back and goes down to this
  • 00:14:35.059 --> 00:14:37.962
  • Little village outside of where they were and finds elisha and
  • 00:14:37.962 --> 00:14:40.397
  • Tells elisha what's going on.
  • 00:14:40.397 --> 00:14:41.899
  • Elisha sends the messenger back and tells the king, "send this
  • 00:14:41.899 --> 00:14:45.803
  • Man to me."
  • 00:14:45.803 --> 00:14:48.038
  • So the king of israel says, "you got the wrong guy.
  • 00:14:48.038 --> 00:14:51.742
  • I know the right guy."
  • 00:14:51.742 --> 00:14:53.077
  • And he sends naaman to see elisha the prophet.
  • 00:14:53.077 --> 00:14:57.214
  • So when naaman shows up at this little village, there's probably
  • 00:14:57.214 --> 00:15:01.051
  • Nobody on the street.
  • 00:15:01.051 --> 00:15:02.419
  • Everybody is--you know, they're hiding out and they've taken the
  • 00:15:02.419 --> 00:15:04.254
  • Women, the children, and the silver, and, you know,
  • 00:15:04.254 --> 00:15:05.990
  • Everybody's gone.
  • 00:15:05.990 --> 00:15:07.324
  • So he pulls up.
  • 00:15:07.324 --> 00:15:08.692
  • And the text says, "so naaman went with his horses and
  • 00:15:08.692 --> 00:15:11.595
  • Chariots," it's a big ordeal, "and stopped at the door of
  • 00:15:11.595 --> 00:15:14.631
  • Elisha's house."
  • 00:15:14.631 --> 00:15:16.667
  • And the streets are empty.
  • 00:15:16.667 --> 00:15:19.603
  • And, of course, naaman expects elisha to come out and, you
  • 00:15:19.603 --> 00:15:22.539
  • Know, bow and scrape and show all respect 'cause naaman's a
  • 00:15:22.539 --> 00:15:25.943
  • Big name and he's a big guy and, you know, he's an important
  • 00:15:25.943 --> 00:15:28.312
  • Person and he's used to people--you know, it's kind of
  • 00:15:28.312 --> 00:15:31.281
  • Sucking up a little bit.
  • 00:15:31.281 --> 00:15:32.616
  • I mean, this--he--he's like second most important person in
  • 00:15:32.616 --> 00:15:34.818
  • His whole country.
  • 00:15:34.818 --> 00:15:36.887
  • And what happens next is amazing.
  • 00:15:36.887 --> 00:15:39.723
  • Elisha sent a messenger.
  • 00:15:39.723 --> 00:15:42.393
  • He didn't even come out of his house.
  • 00:15:42.393 --> 00:15:44.328
  • I mean, there's all this racket.
  • 00:15:44.328 --> 00:15:45.662
  • "it's not like didn't know we were here."
  • 00:15:45.662 --> 00:15:47.998
  • "elisha sent a messenger to say to him," to naaman, "'go wash
  • 00:15:47.998 --> 00:15:52.870
  • Yourself seven times in the jordan river, and your flesh
  • 00:15:52.870 --> 00:15:57.641
  • Will be restored and you will be cleansed.'"
  • 00:15:57.641 --> 00:16:00.778
  • And then this messenger ducks back inside elisha's house.
  • 00:16:00.778 --> 00:16:04.748
  • And naaman is furious.
  • 00:16:04.748 --> 00:16:07.785
  • Nobody talks to him this way.
  • 00:16:07.785 --> 00:16:09.353
  • Nobody treats him this way.
  • 00:16:09.353 --> 00:16:10.721
  • This is such an insult.
  • 00:16:10.721 --> 00:16:12.222
  • And now he starts ranting and raving.
  • 00:16:12.222 --> 00:16:13.757
  • "i thought he would surely," talking about elisha,
  • 00:16:13.757 --> 00:16:17.795
  • "i thought he would surely come out here and stand in front of
  • 00:16:17.795 --> 00:16:20.898
  • Me, call on the name of the lord his god, wave his hands over the
  • 00:16:20.898 --> 00:16:24.668
  • Spot and cure me of my leprosy."
  • 00:16:24.668 --> 00:16:26.837
  • He was expecting some kind of elaborate ceremony.
  • 00:16:26.837 --> 00:16:29.673
  • "we're going to slaughter a thousand sheep and an oxen, and
  • 00:16:29.673 --> 00:16:32.142
  • There's going to be singers and, you know, there's--this is going
  • 00:16:32.142 --> 00:16:34.178
  • To be like a thing.
  • 00:16:34.178 --> 00:16:35.546
  • And at the end of the thing, whatever it looks like, i'm
  • 00:16:35.546 --> 00:16:38.148
  • Going to be cured.
  • 00:16:38.148 --> 00:16:39.950
  • This prophet didn't even have the decency to greet me."
  • 00:16:39.950 --> 00:16:44.288
  • And then he keeps ranting.
  • 00:16:44.288 --> 00:16:45.622
  • He says, "besides that, the rivers in our country are way
  • 00:16:45.622 --> 00:16:48.725
  • Cleaner than the rivers of this filthy country.
  • 00:16:48.725 --> 00:16:51.061
  • I mean, seriously, if i needed a bath--i mean, you're telling me
  • 00:16:51.061 --> 00:16:55.666
  • To go wash myself?
  • 00:16:55.666 --> 00:16:57.034
  • If i needed a bath, i could take a bath in my own country.
  • 00:16:57.034 --> 00:17:00.237
  • They are mocking us."
  • 00:17:00.237 --> 00:17:01.572
  • And he turns around, gets on his chariot and he's about to leave
  • 00:17:01.572 --> 00:17:06.143
  • Because this doesn't make any sense, and then he was not about
  • 00:17:06.143 --> 00:17:11.615
  • To make a spectacle of himself publicly.
  • 00:17:11.615 --> 00:17:19.490
  • And there you are, and there i have been, and there i will
  • 00:17:19.490 --> 00:17:25.662
  • Be again.
  • 00:17:25.662 --> 00:17:28.432
  • "wait, god.
  • 00:17:28.432 --> 00:17:29.766
  • Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, you want me to do what?
  • 00:17:29.766 --> 00:17:32.469
  • What--you want me to break up?
  • 00:17:32.469 --> 00:17:35.806
  • Do you know how long it's--wait, wait, you want me to reconcile
  • 00:17:35.806 --> 00:17:38.909
  • With her or with him?
  • 00:17:38.909 --> 00:17:40.277
  • You want me to recon--it's like, you want me to be--you want me
  • 00:17:40.277 --> 00:17:42.913
  • To apologize?
  • 00:17:42.913 --> 00:17:44.448
  • You want me to consider going back into--wait.
  • 00:17:44.448 --> 00:17:47.684
  • You want me to walk away from all that?
  • 00:17:47.684 --> 00:17:50.154
  • Are you seriously--these opportunities come once in a
  • 00:17:50.154 --> 00:17:52.389
  • Lifetime, and you--i'm supposed to walk away from--you want me
  • 00:17:52.389 --> 00:17:54.925
  • To give up a week of my vacation and go where and do what?"
  • 00:17:54.925 --> 00:18:00.531
  • And there's that tension.
  • 00:18:00.531 --> 00:18:01.865
  • And somebody today watching or in the room,
  • 00:18:01.865 --> 00:18:04.735
  • You're--you--you're wrestling.
  • 00:18:04.735 --> 00:18:07.237
  • You got a decision to make.
  • 00:18:07.237 --> 00:18:08.605
  • And there's an ethical, moral, maybe kind of a religious edge
  • 00:18:08.605 --> 00:18:11.074
  • To this, and it's too much.
  • 00:18:11.074 --> 00:18:13.343
  • It's just over the top, and you're struggling.
  • 00:18:13.343 --> 00:18:17.247
  • And it doesn't make any sense, and people will not understand,
  • 00:18:17.247 --> 00:18:21.051
  • And it will cost you, and there's no guarantee.
  • 00:18:21.051 --> 00:18:24.321
  • You're absolutely right.
  • 00:18:24.321 --> 00:18:26.757
  • Would you like to experience god on the other side?
  • 00:18:26.757 --> 00:18:31.094
  • Do you want to position yourself for the unusual, maybe
  • 00:18:31.094 --> 00:18:34.765
  • The supernatural?
  • 00:18:34.765 --> 00:18:36.567
  • Then you choose the posture of surrender.
  • 00:18:36.567 --> 00:18:40.704
  • "not my will, even though my will makes a whole lot more
  • 00:18:40.704 --> 00:18:43.473
  • Sense than your will.
  • 00:18:43.473 --> 00:18:44.841
  • Not my will, your will be done, and not as a means to an end
  • 00:18:44.841 --> 00:18:50.347
  • Other than i'm surrendered to my king."
  • 00:18:50.347 --> 00:18:52.416
  • This isn't a formula.
  • 00:18:52.416 --> 00:18:53.917
  • This isn't a ploy.
  • 00:18:53.917 --> 00:18:55.452
  • This is simply, "i'm going to live in the posture
  • 00:18:55.452 --> 00:18:57.554
  • Of surrender.
  • 00:18:57.554 --> 00:18:58.922
  • And if you choose me to further your purposes through my
  • 00:18:58.922 --> 00:19:01.225
  • Surrender, have at it.
  • 00:19:01.225 --> 00:19:02.593
  • And however you choose to do, it's fine.
  • 00:19:02.593 --> 00:19:04.494
  • If it's suffering, if it's a miracle, if it's something
  • 00:19:04.494 --> 00:19:06.997
  • Unusual, i'm yours."
  • 00:19:06.997 --> 00:19:11.535
  • That's what it looks like every single day to follow jesus.
  • 00:19:11.535 --> 00:19:16.807
  • Back to the story.
  • 00:19:16.807 --> 00:19:18.175
  • "so naaman's servants--" so he's in a--i mean, he is mad.
  • 00:19:18.175 --> 00:19:21.211
  • He is insulted.
  • 00:19:21.211 --> 00:19:22.579
  • If there hadn't been a treaty, he may have razed the
  • 00:19:22.579 --> 00:19:24.615
  • Whole village.
  • 00:19:24.615 --> 00:19:25.983
  • We don't know.
  • 00:19:25.983 --> 00:19:27.317
  • "naaman's servants went to him and said, 'my father,"
  • 00:19:27.317 --> 00:19:29.653
  • He's--'cause he's about to leave.
  • 00:19:29.653 --> 00:19:31.021
  • "if the prophet had told you to do some great thing, would you
  • 00:19:31.021 --> 00:19:35.292
  • Not have done it?"
  • 00:19:35.292 --> 00:19:36.660
  • "in other words, if the prophet had come out and waved his hands
  • 00:19:36.660 --> 00:19:38.662
  • And said, 'in order to be healed of your leprosy you must go into
  • 00:19:38.662 --> 00:19:41.565
  • The hills and you must slay the twin mountain lions who steal
  • 00:19:41.565 --> 00:19:44.735
  • Our sheep and attack our farmers.'
  • 00:19:44.735 --> 00:19:46.703
  • Wouldn't you have done that?"
  • 00:19:46.703 --> 00:19:48.038
  • He'd be like, "absolutely. i would grab my javelins.
  • 00:19:48.038 --> 00:19:50.374
  • I would have been--you know, i would have charged
  • 00:19:50.374 --> 00:19:51.708
  • The hill with fire."
  • 00:19:51.708 --> 00:19:53.043
  • And they're like, "okay, well, if you would have done
  • 00:19:53.043 --> 00:19:54.611
  • Some great thing, why not do this?
  • 00:19:54.611 --> 00:19:57.881
  • I mean, we're here.
  • 00:19:57.881 --> 00:19:59.249
  • Yes, it's beneath you, yes, it's humiliating, but why not?"
  • 00:19:59.249 --> 00:20:04.354
  • So he does.
  • 00:20:04.354 --> 00:20:06.623
  • He listens to this wise counsel.
  • 00:20:06.623 --> 00:20:07.958
  • "and so he went down and dipped himself in the jordan river
  • 00:20:07.958 --> 00:20:10.093
  • Seven times, just as the man of god had told him, and his flesh
  • 00:20:10.093 --> 00:20:16.433
  • Was restored and he became clean like that of a young boy."
  • 00:20:16.433 --> 00:20:21.305
  • And then naaman and all the entourage
  • 00:20:21.305 --> 00:20:22.639
  • Goes back to the village.
  • 00:20:22.639 --> 00:20:23.974
  • And this time elisha is standing outside, waiting.
  • 00:20:23.974 --> 00:20:26.977
  • "then naaman and all his attendants went
  • 00:20:26.977 --> 00:20:28.345
  • Back to the man of god.
  • 00:20:28.345 --> 00:20:29.680
  • And he stood before them, and naaman said to elisha, 'that was
  • 00:20:29.680 --> 00:20:34.351
  • Quite a trick.
  • 00:20:34.351 --> 00:20:35.952
  • How'd you do that?'"
  • 00:20:35.952 --> 00:20:38.689
  • No, that's not what he said.
  • 00:20:38.689 --> 00:20:40.057
  • You can take that off.
  • 00:20:40.057 --> 00:20:43.660
  • This is the point of the story.
  • 00:20:43.660 --> 00:20:47.431
  • This is the point of your story, of my story, of your story.
  • 00:20:47.431 --> 00:20:52.669
  • This is the point of obedience.
  • 00:20:52.669 --> 00:20:55.505
  • The point of the miracle turned out that the point of the
  • 00:20:55.505 --> 00:20:57.774
  • Miracle, the point of the whole narrative has nothing to do with
  • 00:20:57.774 --> 00:20:59.676
  • Leprosy or even healing, and it had everything to do with
  • 00:20:59.676 --> 00:21:03.980
  • Eye-opening, perspective-changing,
  • 00:21:03.980 --> 00:21:07.551
  • Faith-building revelation.
  • 00:21:07.551 --> 00:21:10.253
  • And as a pastor, this is the experience i want for every
  • 00:21:10.253 --> 00:21:15.592
  • Single one of you and every single one of your kids and
  • 00:21:15.592 --> 00:21:17.561
  • Every single one of your teenagers and every single
  • 00:21:17.561 --> 00:21:19.763
  • Christian everywhere, for all of us, to experience obedience
  • 00:21:19.763 --> 00:21:23.533
  • Intersecting with god's faithfulness because you don't
  • 00:21:23.533 --> 00:21:26.436
  • Know what's on the other side.
  • 00:21:26.436 --> 00:21:27.938
  • And at the end of the day, you don't want to miss it.
  • 00:21:27.938 --> 00:21:29.740
  • And when you miss it, you don't even know what you've missed.
  • 00:21:29.740 --> 00:21:33.043
  • And as you see in the story, naaman isn't just healed,
  • 00:21:33.043 --> 00:21:37.781
  • Which--'cause that's not even the point.
  • 00:21:37.781 --> 00:21:39.549
  • Naaman has changed.
  • 00:21:39.549 --> 00:21:41.385
  • Listen to how the story winds down.
  • 00:21:41.385 --> 00:21:43.720
  • "then naaman and all of his attendants went back to the man
  • 00:21:43.720 --> 00:21:46.256
  • Of god.
  • 00:21:46.256 --> 00:21:47.624
  • And he stood before him and said, 'now i know there is no
  • 00:21:47.624 --> 00:21:51.194
  • God in all the world,'" which was a big statement because he
  • 00:21:51.194 --> 00:21:54.164
  • Had been worshiping other gods.
  • 00:21:54.164 --> 00:21:55.832
  • And all the gods were, you know, associated with certain
  • 00:21:55.832 --> 00:21:57.868
  • Territories, we're going to see.
  • 00:21:57.868 --> 00:21:59.202
  • And now he's like, "oh my goodness.
  • 00:21:59.202 --> 00:22:01.471
  • Whoa, whoa.
  • 00:22:01.471 --> 00:22:02.806
  • What just happened to me? oh my goodness.
  • 00:22:02.806 --> 00:22:04.674
  • I'm convinced there is no other god in the whole world except
  • 00:22:04.674 --> 00:22:08.779
  • In israel."
  • 00:22:08.779 --> 00:22:11.648
  • And then he offers elisha a gift.
  • 00:22:11.648 --> 00:22:13.150
  • He's like, "bring the gold and the silver and give him all ten
  • 00:22:13.150 --> 00:22:15.419
  • Changes of clothes."
  • 00:22:15.419 --> 00:22:16.787
  • And elisha is like, "no."
  • 00:22:16.787 --> 00:22:18.121
  • He refuses it.
  • 00:22:18.121 --> 00:22:19.656
  • This is why elisha didn't go out to greet him in the first place.
  • 00:22:19.656 --> 00:22:22.759
  • He didn't want naaman to think it's magic.
  • 00:22:22.759 --> 00:22:25.362
  • He didn't want naaman to think he's anything special
  • 00:22:25.362 --> 00:22:27.664
  • About elisha.
  • 00:22:27.664 --> 00:22:29.032
  • He didn't want naaman to think there's some kind of formula.
  • 00:22:29.032 --> 00:22:31.401
  • Elisha stays in the house so that when this story plays out,
  • 00:22:31.401 --> 00:22:34.471
  • Naaman knows who's behind it, because god accomplished through
  • 00:22:34.471 --> 00:22:38.508
  • This miracle his purposes in the world and his purposes in his
  • 00:22:38.508 --> 00:22:42.679
  • Nation at the time for his people.
  • 00:22:42.679 --> 00:22:47.517
  • Naaman insists, "no, no, no.
  • 00:22:47.517 --> 00:22:48.952
  • You've got to take something."
  • 00:22:48.952 --> 00:22:50.620
  • And elisha is like, "i'm not taking anything."
  • 00:22:50.620 --> 00:22:53.657
  • And then naaman asks elisha for something.
  • 00:22:53.657 --> 00:22:58.361
  • Dirt.
  • 00:22:58.361 --> 00:22:59.696
  • This is so fascinating.
  • 00:22:59.696 --> 00:23:01.465
  • "if you will not," and he says, "'if you will not take a gift
  • 00:23:01.465 --> 00:23:04.201
  • From me,' said naaman, 'please let me, your servant, be given
  • 00:23:04.201 --> 00:23:07.604
  • As much earth,'" or dirt, "'as a pair of mules can carry.'"
  • 00:23:07.604 --> 00:23:11.708
  • Which is a good bit of dirt.
  • 00:23:11.708 --> 00:23:14.511
  • Why?
  • 00:23:14.511 --> 00:23:15.846
  • He says, "well, because your servant," this is amazing, "will
  • 00:23:15.846 --> 00:23:17.914
  • Never again make burnt offerings and sacrifices to any other god
  • 00:23:17.914 --> 00:23:24.621
  • But" your god, "the lord."
  • 00:23:24.621 --> 00:23:28.592
  • No talk of leprosy, no talk of healing.
  • 00:23:28.592 --> 00:23:33.163
  • He's had an encounter with the living god.
  • 00:23:33.163 --> 00:23:38.034
  • And the reason he wanted the dirt was because back then in
  • 00:23:38.034 --> 00:23:40.470
  • Ancient times it was believed that a deity could be worshiped
  • 00:23:40.470 --> 00:23:44.241
  • Only on the soil of the territory over which the
  • 00:23:44.241 --> 00:23:47.444
  • Deity ruled.
