“If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” - 2 Chronicles 7:14.
As we reflect on the upcoming 2024 elections, it’s natural to think about the current state of our nation. The divisions we see today are concerning, and it’s easy to feel weighed down by the tension around us.
But rather than focus on the difficulties, perhaps now is the time to remember that we have the opportunity to seek healing — not through blame or division, but by turning to God and trusting in His sovereign plan.
"Perhaps now is the time to remember that we have the opportunity to seek healing — not through blame or division, but by turning to God and trusting in His sovereign plan."
Our country’s journey has always been complex. Our founders, many of whom held deep religious convictions, believed in the importance of seeking God’s guidance and direction. This belief can still guide us today.
It’s worth recalling the words of Francis Scott Key in the Star-Spangled Banner: “In God is our trust.” These words serve as a reminder that we, too, can continue to place our trust in God as we seek unity, wisdom, and healing.
Rediscovering Christian Values in American Culture
Throughout our history, the desire to worship freely and seek God’s direction has been a cornerstone of American values. Over time, however, our society has grown more complex, and with that complexity has come a variety of challenges.
These challenges invite us to pause and reflect, to rediscover the enduring power of our shared values. It's a chance to reaffirm our commitment to the principles that unite us and build a stronger foundation for the future.
As Christians, we are part of a larger story — one that has always been about faith and redemption. Just as the Israelites experienced periods of wandering and return, so too can we find our way back to a closer walk with God, especially in times like these when the nation feels fractured.
Instead of condemning the current state of affairs, we can view this as a moment for grace, a moment where each of us can play a part in the healing of our nation.
The Role of the Church: Leading by Example
The Church has a profound influence in American culture, but that influence need not be wielded with force or fear. Rather, the Church can be a source of light in times of controversy and discord, showing what it looks like to live in faith, hope, and love.
Our votes are our voices. They're a chance to join with others and create a brighter future, one that reflects our shared hopes and values.
In fact, the act of voting can be seen as an extension of our responsibility to love our neighbors, ensuring that we are choosing leaders who reflect values of compassion, integrity, and service.
Voting as an Act of Faith
In moments of uncertainty, it’s easy to feel like our individual votes don’t matter. But scripture reminds us that small acts of faith can yield great results. In Matthew 17:20, Jesus says, “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move.”
Voting, though it may seem like a small act, can be a seed planted in faith, trusting that God is at work even in the smallest of things. It is a blessing to live in a country where we have the freedom to vote. Many people around the world are not afforded such an opportunity.
"Voting, though it may seem like a small act, can be a seed planted in faith, trusting that God is at work even in the smallest of things."
So as we approach the 2024 elections, let’s consider how we can approach this with a heart of gratitude, not out of fear or obligation, but out of a genuine desire to see our country thrive under godly leadership.
Praying for Our Leaders and Nation
Scripture repeatedly calls us to pray for our leaders, and this is an essential part of our role as Christians. 1 Timothy 2:1-2 says, “I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession, and thanksgiving be made for all people—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.”
We may not always agree with those in leadership, but we are called to pray for them. Through prayer, we invite God’s wisdom and direction into the hearts of those making decisions for our nation. Rather than focusing on division, we can ask God to bring healing, to soften hearts, and guide our leaders with humility and grace.
Coming Together for the Common Good
As believers, one of the most impactful actions we can take is to join together and stand united. This doesn’t mean we will always see eye-to-eye on every issue, but it does mean that we share a common desire for freedom, justice, and peace.
By voting with a heart aligned with God's will, we each play a part in building a better world.
Our calling is not to fight battles of rhetoric, but to live out the gospel in everything we do, including our political actions. Whether it’s a local election or the presidential race, our votes can reflect our hope in God’s ultimate plan and our commitment to loving our neighbors as ourselves.

In Jeremiah 29:13, God says, “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” Let us seek God with all our hearts in this season, trusting that He will guide us and our nation into a future filled with hope and unity.
