Meet the Disciples: The Men Jesus Chose
The fishermen: Peter, James, and John — the fishermen that Jesus nicknames “the rock” and the “sons of thunder” — were his closest confidants. Out of all the disciples, Jesus spent the most time with these three men. The Gospel identifies them as being of great significance. Jesus had them beside Him during some of His most important moments.
Andrew was also a fisherman and Simon Peter’s brother, mostly likely younger. His name means “manly.” Philip and Nathanael walked alongside Jesus in his ministry. Matthew was a tax collector that Jesus approached at the tax collector’s booth along the Sea of Galilee in Capernaum.
Thomas, one of the twelve, was called “the Twin.” James, son of Alphaeus, was often called “Little James”. Thaddeus was one of the disciples of Jesus and witnessed His ministry and traveled with Him preaching the Gospel throughout Judea and Samaria. Simon the Zealot received his nickname “zealot” due to his political agenda and activism.
