  • 00:00:28.343 --> 00:00:31.246
  • Pastor jordan easley: you know, i've been in ministry since my
  • 00:00:31.246 --> 00:00:32.714
  • Kids were born and just about every saturday one of them will
  • 00:00:32.714 --> 00:00:35.651
  • Ask me, "dad, what are you preaching tomorrow?"
  • 00:00:35.651 --> 00:00:38.253
  • And since they were a kid, my response has been the same every
  • 00:00:38.253 --> 00:00:41.657
  • Single week.
  • 00:00:41.657 --> 00:00:43.025
  • Doesn't matter what the series is, what the text is, every week
  • 00:00:43.025 --> 00:00:45.327
  • I'll say, "i'm preaching on jesus and sin."
  • 00:00:45.327 --> 00:00:49.665
  • Every week, "dad, what are you preaching on?"
  • 00:00:49.665 --> 00:00:51.867
  • "i'm talking about jesus, and i'm talking about sin" every
  • 00:00:51.867 --> 00:00:55.671
  • Single week.
  • 00:00:55.671 --> 00:00:57.106
  • Hey, today we're finishing up the "god defined it" series, and
  • 00:00:57.106 --> 00:01:00.976
  • You want to guess on what i'm preaching on?
  • 00:01:00.976 --> 00:01:04.613
  • Jesus and sin, y'all. okay, open your bible.
  • 00:01:04.613 --> 00:01:06.782
  • We're going to be in romans chapter 3, you know, in verse 23
  • 00:01:06.782 --> 00:01:10.452
  • It says, "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory
  • 00:01:10.452 --> 00:01:13.322
  • Of god."
  • 00:01:13.322 --> 00:01:14.690
  • May i ask you a question? who is this talking about?
  • 00:01:14.690 --> 00:01:17.259
  • It's talking about all of us, right?
  • 00:01:17.259 --> 00:01:19.394
  • I believe that the bible makes it abundantly clear that all of
  • 00:01:19.394 --> 00:01:22.064
  • Us have sinned, all of us have fallen short of the glory
  • 00:01:22.064 --> 00:01:24.500
  • Of god.
  • 00:01:24.500 --> 00:01:25.868
  • I've never met a person who claims to be perfect or claims
  • 00:01:25.868 --> 00:01:28.670
  • To be without sin, but the longer we live the more this
  • 00:01:28.670 --> 00:01:33.008
  • World tries to convince us that certain things in our culture
  • 00:01:33.008 --> 00:01:36.879
  • Are no longer sin even though the bible clearly defines these
  • 00:01:36.879 --> 00:01:41.049
  • Things as being sin.
  • 00:01:41.049 --> 00:01:43.852
  • For instance, we hear all the time that we shouldn't make a
  • 00:01:43.852 --> 00:01:47.356
  • Big deal about people having sex before marriage or doing sexual
  • 00:01:47.356 --> 00:01:52.027
  • Things outside the relationship of marriage because today that's
  • 00:01:52.027 --> 00:01:56.732
  • Just a part of the dating process.
  • 00:01:56.732 --> 00:02:00.469
  • People say, you know, getting drunk isn't that big of a deal
  • 00:02:00.469 --> 00:02:03.071
  • Because everybody drinks or when our world talks about things
  • 00:02:03.071 --> 00:02:05.974
  • Like gossip or gluttony, when we think about lusting or coveting
  • 00:02:05.974 --> 00:02:10.078
  • Or telling a little white lie from time to time.
  • 00:02:10.078 --> 00:02:13.382
  • We like to downplay what we believe to be little sins even
  • 00:02:13.382 --> 00:02:17.085
  • In our christian culture and we make it seem like these little
  • 00:02:17.085 --> 00:02:22.090
  • Things aren't that big of a deal even to god.
  • 00:02:22.090 --> 00:02:28.030
  • Hey, as we get kicked off today, let me just throw this
  • 00:02:28.030 --> 00:02:30.666
  • Out there.
  • 00:02:30.666 --> 00:02:32.034
  • You ready?
  • 00:02:32.034 --> 00:02:33.402
  • Every sin is a big sin to god.
  • 00:02:33.402 --> 00:02:36.004
  • This is foundational, but we've got to get this.
  • 00:02:36.004 --> 00:02:38.607
  • Every sin is a big sin to god; and that includes the things you
  • 00:02:38.607 --> 00:02:41.643
  • Call big sins, that includes the things you consider to be
  • 00:02:41.643 --> 00:02:44.613
  • Small sins.
  • 00:02:44.613 --> 00:02:45.948
  • Every sin is a big deal to god, and we see that to be true going
  • 00:02:45.948 --> 00:02:49.251
  • All the way back to the very beginning.
  • 00:02:49.251 --> 00:02:52.020
  • Today we're going to unpack the subject of sin and hopefully by
  • 00:02:52.020 --> 00:02:55.157
  • The end of this message we'll all understand not necessarily
  • 00:02:55.157 --> 00:02:59.061
  • The world's perspective, but we'll all understand god's
  • 00:02:59.061 --> 00:03:02.564
  • Perspective when it comes to this important topic in
  • 00:03:02.564 --> 00:03:05.767
  • Our life.
  • 00:03:05.767 --> 00:03:07.102
  • In fact, if you're taking notes today, i'm going to go ahead and
  • 00:03:07.102 --> 00:03:10.105
  • Give you a very simple outline that we're going to follow, and
  • 00:03:10.105 --> 00:03:12.374
  • I hope you're writing these things down because if not
  • 00:03:12.374 --> 00:03:15.077
  • You're not going to remember anything you hear.
  • 00:03:15.077 --> 00:03:17.212
  • But our outline today just to give you the answers to the test
  • 00:03:17.212 --> 00:03:20.649
  • Are simply this.
  • 00:03:20.649 --> 00:03:21.984
  • We're going to look at the root of sin, the response of sin, the
  • 00:03:21.984 --> 00:03:25.587
  • Fruit of sin, and the truth about sin.
  • 00:03:25.587 --> 00:03:29.391
  • That's our pathway today.
  • 00:03:29.391 --> 00:03:31.093
  • That's what we're going to look at, and we're going to begin our
  • 00:03:31.093 --> 00:03:33.929
  • Topic today on the root of sin.
  • 00:03:33.929 --> 00:03:36.865
  • Let me ask you.
  • 00:03:36.865 --> 00:03:38.300
  • Where did sin begin?
  • 00:03:38.300 --> 00:03:41.603
  • Most people believe sin originated in the garden of eden
  • 00:03:41.603 --> 00:03:45.107
  • In genesis chapter 3 when adam and eve disobeyed god's command.
  • 00:03:45.107 --> 00:03:49.611
  • But when you do a deep dive in discovering the true root of
  • 00:03:49.611 --> 00:03:52.848
  • Sin, you're going to notice that sin actually originated
  • 00:03:52.848 --> 00:03:57.319
  • In heaven.
  • 00:03:57.319 --> 00:03:59.154
  • You see, before sin entered humanity, it began with satan,
  • 00:03:59.154 --> 00:04:04.192
  • Otherwise known as lucifer.
  • 00:04:04.192 --> 00:04:06.595
  • Lucifer was a beautiful, powerful angel who became
  • 00:04:06.595 --> 00:04:10.799
  • Prideful and chose to rebel against god.
  • 00:04:10.799 --> 00:04:12.968
  • You can read about that in isaiah chapter 14 or ezekiel
  • 00:04:12.968 --> 00:04:16.305
  • Chapter 28.
  • 00:04:16.305 --> 00:04:18.006
  • But those passages show how satan desired to exalt himself
  • 00:04:18.006 --> 00:04:22.577
  • Above god and then responded in rebellion against god, and as a
  • 00:04:22.577 --> 00:04:27.816
  • Result sin was born and satan was kicked out of heaven.
  • 00:04:27.816 --> 00:04:32.688
  • Well, next you see satan where?
  • 00:04:32.688 --> 00:04:35.691
  • In the form of a serpent.
  • 00:04:35.691 --> 00:04:37.626
  • He's hanging out in a place called the garden of eden, and
  • 00:04:37.626 --> 00:04:39.828
  • He's tempting a man and a woman named adam and eve telling them,
  • 00:04:39.828 --> 00:04:43.799
  • "you should turn your back on god."
  • 00:04:43.799 --> 00:04:46.201
  • He tempted eve to eat the forbidden fruit from the tree of
  • 00:04:46.201 --> 00:04:49.938
  • The knowledge of good and evil.
  • 00:04:49.938 --> 00:04:51.606
  • By the way, that was the one tree that god told them that you
  • 00:04:51.606 --> 00:04:54.142
  • Should avoid at all costs.
  • 00:04:54.142 --> 00:04:56.278
  • But what did she do?
  • 00:04:56.278 --> 00:04:58.046
  • Well, she ate of the tree, and so did adam.
  • 00:04:58.046 --> 00:05:01.416
  • And when they chose to disobey god, the sin that originated
  • 00:05:01.416 --> 00:05:06.188
  • With satan in heaven was born into the hearts of humans here
  • 00:05:06.188 --> 00:05:11.360
  • On the earth.
  • 00:05:11.360 --> 00:05:12.894
  • Maybe you're wondering, "what does adam and eve's sin have to
  • 00:05:12.894 --> 00:05:16.298
  • Do with me?
  • 00:05:16.298 --> 00:05:17.666
  • I mean, why are we being punished for something that they
  • 00:05:17.666 --> 00:05:19.701
  • Did so long ago?"
  • 00:05:19.701 --> 00:05:21.370
  • And that's a great question. a lot of people wonder that.
  • 00:05:21.370 --> 00:05:24.406
  • Romans 5 kind of gives us a pretty good answer.
  • 00:05:24.406 --> 00:05:27.175
  • It says, "just as sin entered the world through one man, and
  • 00:05:27.175 --> 00:05:31.246
  • Death through sin, in this way death spread to all people,
  • 00:05:31.246 --> 00:05:37.119
  • Because all sinned."
  • 00:05:37.119 --> 00:05:39.855
  • So what does that verse tell you and i?
  • 00:05:39.855 --> 00:05:41.957
  • It says that sin is all of our problem.
  • 00:05:41.957 --> 00:05:45.193
  • Sin is our root problem. it is our foundational problem.
  • 00:05:45.193 --> 00:05:51.032
  • I read a story this week about a man who owned a beautiful,
  • 00:05:51.032 --> 00:05:53.668
  • Pristine white house.
  • 00:05:53.668 --> 00:05:56.471
  • Everything was perfect, and this guy was extremely proud of how
  • 00:05:56.471 --> 00:06:00.442
  • Perfect and spotless his home really was 'cause it
  • 00:06:00.442 --> 00:06:03.345
  • Was flawless.
  • 00:06:03.345 --> 00:06:04.679
  • Everywhere you'd look, it was perfection.
  • 00:06:04.679 --> 00:06:07.449
  • But then one day he was walking around his home and he noticed
  • 00:06:07.449 --> 00:06:10.085
  • That there was a little crack in one of the corners and because
  • 00:06:10.085 --> 00:06:13.989
  • His house was so perfect it really bothered him.
  • 00:06:13.989 --> 00:06:16.625
  • So he immediately went to his basement, he grabbed a--some
  • 00:06:16.625 --> 00:06:20.562
  • Paint and a brush and he covered up that crack so that his home
  • 00:06:20.562 --> 00:06:24.166
  • Would look perfect again.
  • 00:06:24.166 --> 00:06:25.967
  • And you know what? it did.
  • 00:06:25.967 --> 00:06:28.003
  • After he covered the crack, it was perfect once again.
  • 00:06:28.003 --> 00:06:30.839
  • It was spotless.
  • 00:06:30.839 --> 00:06:32.407
  • It was flawless at least for a little while.
  • 00:06:32.407 --> 00:06:36.611
  • Couple of weeks later the crack reappeared, but this time the
  • 00:06:36.611 --> 00:06:39.848
  • Crack was even bigger and it was more noticeable and the man was
  • 00:06:39.848 --> 00:06:43.084
  • Upset because he wanted it to be perfect.
  • 00:06:43.084 --> 00:06:46.254
  • So he picked up the phone, he called a contractor, and he
  • 00:06:46.254 --> 00:06:48.824
  • Said, "i need you to come tell me what my problem is."
  • 00:06:48.824 --> 00:06:51.793
  • The contractor showed up, evaluated everything, and the
  • 00:06:51.793 --> 00:06:55.497
  • Contractor looked at him at the conclusion of their meeting and
  • 00:06:55.497 --> 00:06:58.433
  • Said this: "sir, your problem is not the crack in the wall, your
  • 00:06:58.433 --> 00:07:03.338
  • Problem is the foundation under your feet."
  • 00:07:03.338 --> 00:07:06.875
  • He said, "until you fix the foundation, that crack will
  • 00:07:06.875 --> 00:07:10.879
  • Continue coming back."
  • 00:07:10.879 --> 00:07:13.415
  • Hey, i think most of us have the ability to look at our own lives
  • 00:07:13.415 --> 00:07:17.452
  • And to identify the cracks and the flaws that shouldn't
  • 00:07:17.452 --> 00:07:21.056
  • Be there.
  • 00:07:21.056 --> 00:07:22.424
  • We all have what i want to call a cosmetic crack in our
  • 00:07:22.424 --> 00:07:25.894
  • Life, right?
  • 00:07:25.894 --> 00:07:27.796
  • And we inherently know the difference between right and
  • 00:07:27.796 --> 00:07:30.565
  • Wrong and when we cross that line there's something inside of
  • 00:07:30.565 --> 00:07:33.702
  • Us that says, "man, i really shouldn't have said that.
  • 00:07:33.702 --> 00:07:37.038
  • I really shouldn't have done that.
  • 00:07:37.038 --> 00:07:39.274
  • Like i knew the second i did that, that that was out
  • 00:07:39.274 --> 00:07:41.376
  • Of bounds.
  • 00:07:41.376 --> 00:07:42.711
  • I crossed the line.
  • 00:07:42.711 --> 00:07:44.079
  • I did something or said something that i shouldn't say."
  • 00:07:44.079 --> 00:07:46.414
  • And when that happens, our tendency, a lot of times it's
  • 00:07:46.414 --> 00:07:50.619
  • Just to do our best to cover up those cosmetic cracks.
  • 00:07:50.619 --> 00:07:54.856
  • We do our best to modify our behavior or change our life or
  • 00:07:54.856 --> 00:07:59.861
  • Do some things different in order to be a better person, but
  • 00:07:59.861 --> 00:08:05.000
  • What i want us to see is until we fix or address the
  • 00:08:05.000 --> 00:08:08.670
  • Foundational problem of our sin we are never going to truly
  • 00:08:08.670 --> 00:08:13.842
  • Experience freedom from our sin.
  • 00:08:13.842 --> 00:08:16.177
  • Our foundational problem, all of us, y'all, is sin.
  • 00:08:16.177 --> 00:08:21.483
  • Every single one of us, our foundational problem is sin.
  • 00:08:21.483 --> 00:08:25.186
  • What did we just read in romans 3?
  • 00:08:25.186 --> 00:08:27.055
  • "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of god."
  • 00:08:27.055 --> 00:08:31.893
  • Think about this.
  • 00:08:31.893 --> 00:08:33.228
  • What started as one single human decision from adam and eve
  • 00:08:33.228 --> 00:08:38.700
  • Became the world's single greatest problem.
  • 00:08:38.700 --> 00:08:42.304
  • You get that?
  • 00:08:42.304 --> 00:08:43.905
  • You see, their sinful decision led to sin becoming a part of
  • 00:08:43.905 --> 00:08:47.609
  • Human nature, and today every human being that is born is born
  • 00:08:47.609 --> 00:08:54.082
  • Into sin.
  • 00:08:54.082 --> 00:08:55.850
  • In fact, the psalmist said that in psalm 51.
  • 00:08:55.850 --> 00:08:58.720
  • In psalm 51:5, the psalmist said, "indeed, i was guilty,"
  • 00:08:58.720 --> 00:09:02.057
  • When, "when i was born.
  • 00:09:02.057 --> 00:09:05.126
  • I was sinful," when, "when my mother conceived me."
  • 00:09:05.126 --> 00:09:08.830
  • That's going way back, y'all.
  • 00:09:08.830 --> 00:09:11.066
  • Since your mom conceived you, the bible says you've
  • 00:09:11.066 --> 00:09:13.368
  • Been sinful.
  • 00:09:13.368 --> 00:09:14.736
  • That was true in his life, and that's been true in the life of
  • 00:09:14.736 --> 00:09:16.838
  • Every single human being in the history of time.
  • 00:09:16.838 --> 00:09:20.542
  • It's the root of sin.
  • 00:09:20.542 --> 00:09:21.876
  • It affects all of us.
  • 00:09:21.876 --> 00:09:23.545
  • But now let's look at the response of sin.
  • 00:09:23.545 --> 00:09:25.880
  • See, when god created adam and eve, he created human beings as
  • 00:09:25.880 --> 00:09:28.817
  • Being perfect.
  • 00:09:28.817 --> 00:09:30.151
  • We were created to be sin-free.
  • 00:09:30.151 --> 00:09:33.788
  • They, like us, were created in the image of god, and humans
  • 00:09:33.788 --> 00:09:37.592
  • Were formed with a heart like god.
  • 00:09:37.592 --> 00:09:39.995
  • But when the snake entered the garden, humanity experienced
  • 00:09:39.995 --> 00:09:43.198
  • Something powerful for the very first time.
  • 00:09:43.198 --> 00:09:45.200
  • You know what that was?
  • 00:09:45.200 --> 00:09:47.068
  • Temptation.
  • 00:09:47.068 --> 00:09:48.970
  • For the first time we see temptation.
  • 00:09:48.970 --> 00:09:51.640
  • That's what genesis chapter 3 is all about.
  • 00:09:51.640 --> 00:09:53.775
  • Verse 1 says, "the serpent was the most cunning of all the wild
  • 00:09:53.775 --> 00:09:57.679
  • Animals that the lord god has made."
  • 00:09:57.679 --> 00:10:00.815
  • In fact, it talks about this snake talking to eve and lying
  • 00:10:00.815 --> 00:10:05.520
  • About god's instructions.
  • 00:10:05.520 --> 00:10:06.988
  • He convinced her that there would be no consequences if she
  • 00:10:06.988 --> 00:10:10.425
  • Just turned her back on god and did what he wanted her to do.
  • 00:10:10.425 --> 00:10:13.862
  • He whispered in her ear and he questioned god's authority and
  • 00:10:13.862 --> 00:10:17.032
  • He worked hard to convince her that, "there is something out
  • 00:10:17.032 --> 00:10:20.935
  • There, something possible for you that is even greater than
  • 00:10:20.935 --> 00:10:25.206
  • God himself."
  • 00:10:25.206 --> 00:10:27.809
  • And how did she respond?
  • 00:10:27.809 --> 00:10:30.278
  • She took the bait.
  • 00:10:30.278 --> 00:10:32.347
  • Her response to that temptation began the ripple effect of sin
  • 00:10:32.347 --> 00:10:36.418
  • That we continue to experience even today.
  • 00:10:36.418 --> 00:10:41.556
  • Are you tempted today?
  • 00:10:41.556 --> 00:10:43.958
  • All of us are.
  • 00:10:43.958 --> 00:10:45.427
  • But you know what it says in james 1?
  • 00:10:45.427 --> 00:10:47.295
  • Says, "no one undergoing a trial should say,
  • 00:10:47.295 --> 00:10:50.031
  • 'i'm being tempted by god,'
  • 00:10:50.031 --> 00:10:52.067
  • Since god is not tempted by evil, and he himself doesn't
  • 00:10:52.067 --> 00:10:55.370
  • Tempt anyone.
  • 00:10:55.370 --> 00:10:56.705
  • But each person is tempted when he is drawn away and enticed by
  • 00:10:56.705 --> 00:11:01.309
  • His own evil desire.
  • 00:11:01.309 --> 00:11:03.411
  • Then after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin, and when
  • 00:11:03.411 --> 00:11:08.216
  • Sin is fully grown, it gives birth to death."
  • 00:11:08.216 --> 00:11:13.822
  • Temptation will always lead us to a decision, always, and those
  • 00:11:13.822 --> 00:11:19.394
  • Decisions according to scripture are going to lead you either to
  • 00:11:19.394 --> 00:11:22.597
  • Life or they're going to lead you to death.
  • 00:11:22.597 --> 00:11:26.668
  • But we don't think about that when we're being tempted, do we?
  • 00:11:26.668 --> 00:11:29.804
  • Most of us aren't thinking, "oh, this is a
  • 00:11:29.804 --> 00:11:31.206
  • Life-or-death situation."
  • 00:11:31.206 --> 00:11:33.408
  • Because most of the time it doesn't seem like it is.
  • 00:11:33.408 --> 00:11:35.944
  • When we're being tempted, what are we thinking?
  • 00:11:35.944 --> 00:11:37.612
  • We're thinking, "hey, what do i want to do?
  • 00:11:37.612 --> 00:11:39.114
  • What seems right in the moment? what sounds fun?
  • 00:11:39.114 --> 00:11:41.216
  • That looks awesome."
  • 00:11:41.216 --> 00:11:42.550
  • And we're just kind of moving, but let me ask you this.
  • 00:11:42.550 --> 00:11:47.255
  • What frame of mind are you in most of the time when you're
  • 00:11:47.255 --> 00:11:50.859
  • Making those decisions?
  • 00:11:50.859 --> 00:11:53.294
  • We read this verse a couple of weeks ago in colossians 3 that
  • 00:11:53.294 --> 00:11:55.930
  • Said, "set your mind on things above, not on earthly things."
  • 00:11:55.930 --> 00:12:01.669
  • But far too often our minds are focused on temporary things
  • 00:12:01.669 --> 00:12:05.573
  • Instead of eternal things and for those reasons we oftentimes
  • 00:12:05.573 --> 00:12:08.810
  • Let the power of temptation pull us across the line
  • 00:12:08.810 --> 00:12:13.314
  • For sinfulness.
  • 00:12:13.314 --> 00:12:15.917
  • Hey, what determines the line for sinfulness, by the way?
  • 00:12:15.917 --> 00:12:19.788
  • I mean, have you ever wondered that?
  • 00:12:19.788 --> 00:12:21.890
  • Because like we've already seen, the world has a different answer
  • 00:12:21.890 --> 00:12:24.592
  • To that question than your bible does.
  • 00:12:24.592 --> 00:12:27.195
  • Who determines if something is a sin or not?
  • 00:12:27.195 --> 00:12:30.131
  • Answer, god does, y'all.
  • 00:12:30.131 --> 00:12:33.301
  • Y'all should have known the answer to that one.
  • 00:12:33.301 --> 00:12:35.503
  • God determines if something is a sin or not.
  • 00:12:35.503 --> 00:12:37.672
  • Let me just say at the end of this series: you should know the
  • 00:12:37.672 --> 00:12:40.074
  • World does not determine if something is a sin or not, the
  • 00:12:40.074 --> 00:12:43.244
  • World doesn't determine what's right and what's wrong.
  • 00:12:43.244 --> 00:12:45.814
  • God does.
  • 00:12:45.814 --> 00:12:47.348
  • Now, here's what we need to understand.
  • 00:12:47.348 --> 00:12:49.450
  • God didn't design sin, but god is the one who defines sin.
  • 00:12:49.450 --> 00:12:53.822
  • And how does he define it?
  • 00:12:53.822 --> 00:12:55.723
  • How does god determine if something is a sin or not?
  • 00:12:55.723 --> 00:12:59.627
  • I'm going to give you two things, but number one is the
  • 00:12:59.627 --> 00:13:01.429
  • Most important.
  • 00:13:01.429 --> 00:13:02.764
  • God's measuring stick for sin is his word, his word.
  • 00:13:02.764 --> 00:13:07.101
  • In isaiah 40, verse 8 it says, "the grass withers, the flowers
  • 00:13:07.101 --> 00:13:10.572
  • Fade, but the word of our god remains," say this with
  • 00:13:10.572 --> 00:13:14.209
  • Me, "forever."
  • 00:13:14.209 --> 00:13:16.277
  • Hey, our god says something about his word.
  • 00:13:16.277 --> 00:13:19.013
  • He also says something about himself.
  • 00:13:19.013 --> 00:13:21.282
  • And that next verse, i want you to see this, the lord says that
  • 00:13:21.282 --> 00:13:24.419
  • He himself--"i, the lord, have not changed."
  • 00:13:24.419 --> 00:13:28.623
  • Do you know what that means?
  • 00:13:28.623 --> 00:13:30.325
  • It means our god is unchangeable, big point, and the
  • 00:13:30.325 --> 00:13:35.263
  • Word of god is unchangeable.
  • 00:13:35.263 --> 00:13:38.132
  • God is unchangeable, his word is unchangeable, which ultimately
  • 00:13:38.132 --> 00:13:41.803
  • Means god's measuring stick for sin does not change even when
  • 00:13:41.803 --> 00:13:48.109
  • Culture disagrees.
  • 00:13:48.109 --> 00:13:50.712
  • Hey, in the bible, god gives us several what i want to call
  • 00:13:50.712 --> 00:13:53.248
  • Black and white sins, where he makes himself abundantly clear.
  • 00:13:53.248 --> 00:13:57.719
  • It's when you read the bible and it says--and god says, "this is
  • 00:13:57.719 --> 00:14:01.022
  • Wrong," or, "that is wrong.
  • 00:14:01.022 --> 00:14:03.591
  • And if you do these things you're stepping into sin, but
  • 00:14:03.591 --> 00:14:05.960
  • You're also stepping in rebellion away from me."
  • 00:14:05.960 --> 00:14:09.764
  • The ten commandments would be a great example of a black and
  • 00:14:09.764 --> 00:14:12.834
  • White sin.
  • 00:14:12.834 --> 00:14:14.168
  • He said, "you shall not steal.
  • 00:14:14.168 --> 00:14:15.503
  • You shall not commit adultery.
  • 00:14:15.503 --> 00:14:16.871
  • You shall not take my name in vain or worship false gods or
  • 00:14:16.871 --> 00:14:21.175
  • Bear false witness against your neighbor.
  • 00:14:21.175 --> 00:14:23.444
  • You should not--you shall not covet your neighbor's
  • 00:14:23.444 --> 00:14:26.047
  • Stuff," right?
  • 00:14:26.047 --> 00:14:27.415
  • We all know the ten commandments.
  • 00:14:27.415 --> 00:14:29.517
  • The lord made himself abundantly clear when he said those things.
  • 00:14:29.517 --> 00:14:32.053
  • He said these are black and white directives from god to us;
  • 00:14:32.053 --> 00:14:36.925
  • Which means if i take something that doesn't belong to me today,
  • 00:14:36.925 --> 00:14:41.930
  • If i leave church and go murder someone today, if i fail to keep
  • 00:14:41.930 --> 00:14:46.334
  • The sabbath holy today, i don't have to wonder is this sin or is
  • 00:14:46.334 --> 00:14:51.005
  • This not sin.
  • 00:14:51.005 --> 00:14:52.807
  • No, i know it's sin.
  • 00:14:52.807 --> 00:14:54.442
  • There's no conversation to have because god's word makes it
  • 00:14:54.442 --> 00:14:57.812
  • Abundantly clear when those things are sin or not.
  • 00:14:57.812 --> 00:15:01.482
  • It's when you say, "hey, jesus, take out my old heart,
  • 00:15:01.482 --> 00:15:03.851
  • Give me a new one."
  • 00:15:03.851 --> 00:15:05.553
  • And when our hearts are transformed by christ,
  • 00:15:05.553 --> 00:15:07.789
  • That's what changes everything, including your desire to sin.
  • 00:15:07.789 --> 00:15:13.094
  • Listen, you're always going to have temptation in your life,
  • 00:15:13.094 --> 00:15:15.530
  • But how you look at the line of sin will tell you the truth
  • 00:15:15.530 --> 00:15:18.132
  • About your heart.
  • 00:15:18.132 --> 00:15:19.834
  • You see, i believe there's three groups of people in every single
  • 00:15:19.834 --> 00:15:22.704
  • Church when it comes to how do you look at the line for sin.
  • 00:15:22.704 --> 00:15:27.642
  • There's the person that avoids the line at all costs and those
  • 00:15:27.642 --> 00:15:31.679
  • Are people that say, "hey, i have no desire to sin and i'm
  • 00:15:31.679 --> 00:15:35.016
  • Running away from sin because my heart's been changed by god and
  • 00:15:35.016 --> 00:15:38.152
  • God's heart doesn't need to pursue things that are unholy."
  • 00:15:38.152 --> 00:15:41.656
  • But then you also have another group of people and those are
  • 00:15:41.656 --> 00:15:44.125
  • Ones who say, "i'm going to get as close to the line
  • 00:15:44.125 --> 00:15:46.427
  • As possible."
  • 00:15:46.427 --> 00:15:47.962
  • That's my kid when he was little, right?
  • 00:15:47.962 --> 00:15:49.764
  • I mean, whatever the line is, he's going to just go right up
  • 00:15:49.764 --> 00:15:52.433
  • Next to that line.
  • 00:15:52.433 --> 00:15:53.768
  • He's not going to cross it.
  • 00:15:53.768 --> 00:15:55.136
  • He's definitely not going to be hanging out over here.
  • 00:15:55.136 --> 00:15:56.471
  • He's going to get as close to the line as possible.
  • 00:15:56.471 --> 00:15:58.773
  • But a lot of us even as adults we do that with sinful things
  • 00:15:58.773 --> 00:16:02.477
  • And we get close to that line and we're trying to teeter
  • 00:16:02.477 --> 00:16:04.812
  • Between the world and the lord.
  • 00:16:04.812 --> 00:16:07.515
  • We're trying to experience the best of both worlds and the
  • 00:16:07.515 --> 00:16:09.884
  • Lord's saying, "hey, i want you to pursue holiness, and i want
  • 00:16:09.884 --> 00:16:12.653
  • You to flee sin."
  • 00:16:12.653 --> 00:16:14.389
  • But we're hanging out on that line, trying to be in both
  • 00:16:14.389 --> 00:16:17.525
  • Worlds at the same time.
  • 00:16:17.525 --> 00:16:18.860
  • You got another group of people, and those are those who--we
  • 00:16:18.860 --> 00:16:21.596
  • Crossed the line and we never looked back, and i'll say those
  • 00:16:21.596 --> 00:16:25.333
  • Are the folks in the room who are living in rebellion and
  • 00:16:25.333 --> 00:16:28.469
  • You've chosen to--the devil's way over god's way and you
  • 00:16:28.469 --> 00:16:31.873
  • Haven't died to your old nature.
  • 00:16:31.873 --> 00:16:33.441
  • You're still living in that old nature.
  • 00:16:33.441 --> 00:16:35.877
  • You don't have a new heart.
  • 00:16:35.877 --> 00:16:37.245
  • You still have that same old heart pursuing the same
  • 00:16:37.245 --> 00:16:39.414
  • Old things.
  • 00:16:39.414 --> 00:16:41.049
  • But the bible says when god changes our heart, he changes
  • 00:16:41.049 --> 00:16:43.684
  • The way we approach the line for sin.
  • 00:16:43.684 --> 00:16:46.220
  • We see this play out when it comes to sexual sin all
  • 00:16:46.220 --> 00:16:49.123
  • The time.
  • 00:16:49.123 --> 00:16:50.491
  • The bible is very black and white with sexual sin.
  • 00:16:50.491 --> 00:16:52.160
  • 1 corinthians 6, "flee sexual immorality."
  • 00:16:52.160 --> 00:16:55.563
  • 1 thessalonians 4, "keep away from sexual immorality," right?
  • 00:16:55.563 --> 00:17:00.134
  • It's like black and white sin, this is what you should do.
  • 00:17:00.134 --> 00:17:03.971
  • But how do we respond when it comes to sexual sin?
  • 00:17:03.971 --> 00:17:06.707
  • Three groups.
  • 00:17:06.707 --> 00:17:08.076
  • We flee from the line because of our conviction, we flirt with
  • 00:17:08.076 --> 00:17:11.679
  • The line because we've got some confusion, or we cross the line
  • 00:17:11.679 --> 00:17:15.850
  • In all-out rebellion.
  • 00:17:15.850 --> 00:17:17.885
  • When god gives us a new heart, that heart transformation should
  • 00:17:17.885 --> 00:17:22.190
  • Bring a whole new perspective.

  • Let me tell you: when you start looking at the sin in your life
  • 00:17:34.068 --> 00:17:36.204
  • The same way god looks at the sin in your life, you'll start
  • 00:17:36.204 --> 00:17:40.074
  • Fleeing from that sin the same way he tells you to flee
  • 00:17:40.074 --> 00:17:42.543
  • From it.
  • 00:17:42.543 --> 00:17:43.911

  • 00:17:43.911 --> 00:17:45.413
  • The response to our sin.

  • Real quickly i want to give you the fruit of our sin, the fruit
  • 00:17:47.548 --> 00:17:50.885
  • Of our sin.
  • 00:17:50.885 --> 00:17:52.720
  • The bible says if you don't kill the root of sin you will
  • 00:17:52.720 --> 00:17:56.124
  • Eventually experience the fruit of sin.
  • 00:17:56.124 --> 00:17:58.759
  • What did we just read in james 1?
  • 00:17:58.759 --> 00:18:00.428
  • "but each person is tempted when he is drawn away
  • 00:18:00.428 --> 00:18:03.264
  • And enticed by his own evil desire.
  • 00:18:03.264 --> 00:18:06.467
  • Then after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin, and when
  • 00:18:06.467 --> 00:18:09.470
  • Sin is fully grown, it gives birth to death."
  • 00:18:09.470 --> 00:18:12.540
  • What is the fruit of sin?
  • 00:18:12.540 --> 00:18:13.875
  • Can i give you four things the bible says?
  • 00:18:13.875 --> 00:18:15.910
  • Number one, spiritual death.
  • 00:18:15.910 --> 00:18:18.646
  • Romans 6:23 says, "for the wages of sin is death."
  • 00:18:18.646 --> 00:18:22.416
  • That word wages, it refers to something that we earn
  • 00:18:22.416 --> 00:18:24.852
  • Or deserve.
  • 00:18:24.852 --> 00:18:26.187
  • It's like minimum wage, right?
  • 00:18:26.187 --> 00:18:27.822
  • So what do you earn because of your sin?
  • 00:18:27.822 --> 00:18:29.790
  • The bible says you earn spiritual death.
  • 00:18:29.790 --> 00:18:33.794
  • In other words, if you don't kill your sin, your sin will
  • 00:18:33.794 --> 00:18:37.098
  • Kill you, and this will end.
  • 00:18:37.098 --> 00:18:39.500
  • This story will end in spiritual death, which is also something
  • 00:18:39.500 --> 00:18:44.605
  • Called separation from god.
  • 00:18:44.605 --> 00:18:46.607
  • Isaiah 59:2 says, "but your iniquities are separating you
  • 00:18:46.607 --> 00:18:50.845
  • From god, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that
  • 00:18:50.845 --> 00:18:55.483
  • He does not listen."
  • 00:18:55.483 --> 00:18:56.851
  • Have you ever thought about that?
  • 00:18:56.851 --> 00:18:58.853
  • Like, unaddressed, unconfessed sin in my life has the ability
  • 00:18:58.853 --> 00:19:02.623
  • To build a wall between me and god.
  • 00:19:02.623 --> 00:19:04.692
  • We're now--even when i cry out to god, he will not listen
  • 00:19:04.692 --> 00:19:08.429
  • Because that wall of sin is blocking me.
  • 00:19:08.429 --> 00:19:11.566
  • Have you ever realized that?
  • 00:19:11.566 --> 00:19:13.367
  • Unaddressed, unconfessed sin in your life blocks the ear of god,
  • 00:19:13.367 --> 00:19:19.240
  • Where you no longer have access the way that god built you to
  • 00:19:19.240 --> 00:19:22.643
  • Have access.
  • 00:19:22.643 --> 00:19:24.245
  • Not only do we have separation from god, there's also bondage
  • 00:19:24.245 --> 00:19:27.181
  • To sin.
  • 00:19:27.181 --> 00:19:28.516
  • This is a major fruit.
  • 00:19:28.516 --> 00:19:29.884
  • John 8:34, "jesus said, 'truly i tell you, everyone who commits
  • 00:19:29.884 --> 00:19:33.154
  • Sin is a slave of sin.'"
  • 00:19:33.154 --> 00:19:36.057
  • That means when we have sin in our life and it's unaddressed,
  • 00:19:36.057 --> 00:19:38.793
  • Unconfessed, we have not repented, we have not turned to
  • 00:19:38.793 --> 00:19:42.096
  • Jesus, it's like putting a ball and chain around your leg.
  • 00:19:42.096 --> 00:19:46.000
  • And when you have a ball and chain and you are a slave to
  • 00:19:46.000 --> 00:19:48.903
  • Your sin, it is impossible for you to run the race god called
  • 00:19:48.903 --> 00:19:51.939
  • You to run.
  • 00:19:51.939 --> 00:19:53.307
  • You cannot be maximized in this race called life if you are a
  • 00:19:53.307 --> 00:19:56.344
  • Slave to the sin in your life, and he said you will experience
  • 00:19:56.344 --> 00:20:00.681
  • Bondage because of your sin, which prevents freedom in
  • 00:20:00.681 --> 00:20:04.118
  • Your life.
  • 00:20:04.118 --> 00:20:05.453
  • Let me give you a fourth one.
  • 00:20:05.453 --> 00:20:06.821
  • You ready?
  • 00:20:06.821 --> 00:20:08.155
  • One of the fruits is this: judgment and
  • 00:20:08.155 --> 00:20:09.523
  • Eternal consequences.
  • 00:20:09.523 --> 00:20:11.092
  • In matthew chapter 25 it says, "and they will go away into
  • 00:20:11.092 --> 00:20:14.729
  • Eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."
  • 00:20:14.729 --> 00:20:19.433
  • We have an option here.
  • 00:20:19.433 --> 00:20:20.768
  • There is a fork in the road, and he says how you address the sin
  • 00:20:20.768 --> 00:20:24.105
  • In your life will determine which path you take for
  • 00:20:24.105 --> 00:20:26.974
  • All eternity.
  • 00:20:26.974 --> 00:20:28.342
  • That's the fruit of sin.
  • 00:20:28.342 --> 00:20:30.044
  • Last but not least, i want to show you the truth about sin.
  • 00:20:30.044 --> 00:20:32.947
  • Sin is universal.
  • 00:20:32.947 --> 00:20:34.315
  • I'm going to give you five things right here, and this
  • 00:20:34.315 --> 00:20:36.284
  • Applies to every one of us.
  • 00:20:36.284 --> 00:20:37.652
  • Sin is universal.
  • 00:20:37.652 --> 00:20:38.986
  • We just read that in romans 3.
  • 00:20:38.986 --> 00:20:40.321
  • "for all of sinned and fall short of the glory of god."
  • 00:20:40.321 --> 00:20:42.723
  • Every single one of us are guilty as charged.
  • 00:20:42.723 --> 00:20:46.260
  • Romans 3, verse 10 says, "there is no one righteous, not
  • 00:20:46.260 --> 00:20:49.530
  • Even one."
  • 00:20:49.530 --> 00:20:50.898
  • Sin is universal, but it's also personal.
  • 00:20:50.898 --> 00:20:55.002
  • This isn't just a, "lump us all together.
  • 00:20:55.002 --> 00:20:56.971
  • We are all sinners and so that's just the boat that we're in."
  • 00:20:56.971 --> 00:21:00.007
  • No, it's a personal thing between us and the lord.
  • 00:21:00.007 --> 00:21:02.476
  • Psalm 51:4 says, "against you, you alone, i have sinned and
  • 00:21:02.476 --> 00:21:06.681
  • Done this in your evil sight."
  • 00:21:06.681 --> 00:21:09.450
  • You know what that tells me?
  • 00:21:09.450 --> 00:21:11.319
  • No one's responsible for my sin except for me.
  • 00:21:11.319 --> 00:21:14.488
  • I can't blame anybody else for my greatest problem today
  • 00:21:14.488 --> 00:21:18.426
  • Because it's a personal problem.
  • 00:21:18.426 --> 00:21:20.661
  • But not only is it a personal problem, the bible says it is
  • 00:21:20.661 --> 00:21:23.097
  • Also a spiritual problem.
  • 00:21:23.097 --> 00:21:25.132
  • It's a spiritual problem because sin is the one thing that
  • 00:21:25.132 --> 00:21:28.135
  • Separates me from god.
  • 00:21:28.135 --> 00:21:30.137
  • Here's the thing that we've got to know about
  • 00:21:30.137 --> 00:21:31.572
  • Spiritual problems.
  • 00:21:31.572 --> 00:21:32.940
  • Are you ready?
  • 00:21:32.940 --> 00:21:34.308
  • We don't have the ability to fix spiritual problems with
  • 00:21:34.308 --> 00:21:36.877
  • Practical solutions.
  • 00:21:36.877 --> 00:21:39.080
  • Only a spiritual being has the ability to create spiritual
  • 00:21:39.080 --> 00:21:43.451
  • Solutions, which means without jesus there is nothing that we
  • 00:21:43.451 --> 00:21:47.054
  • Can do to fix our world's greatest problem.
  • 00:21:47.054 --> 00:21:51.158
  • It's a personal problem.
  • 00:21:51.158 --> 00:21:53.060
  • It's also a spiritual problem.
  • 00:21:53.060 --> 00:21:55.863
  • But the fourth one, sin is punishable.
  • 00:21:55.863 --> 00:21:58.165
  • It's universal, it's personal, it's spiritual, but
  • 00:21:58.165 --> 00:22:00.468
  • It's punishable.
  • 00:22:00.468 --> 00:22:01.802
  • I think about how the lord responded to the people in

  • Leviticus 26.
  • 00:22:03.938 --> 00:22:05.706
  • He said, "but if after these things you will not obey me, i
  • 00:22:05.706 --> 00:22:10.344
  • Will proceed to discipline you seven times for your sins."
  • 00:22:10.344 --> 00:22:14.615
  • In psalm 145, "the lord guards all those who love him," it
  • 00:22:14.615 --> 00:22:18.719
  • Says, "but he destroys all the wicked."
  • 00:22:18.719 --> 00:22:22.757
  • In ezekiel 18:20 it says, "the person who sin is the one--the
  • 00:22:22.757 --> 00:22:27.461
  • Person who sins is the one who will die."
  • 00:22:27.461 --> 00:22:30.431
  • That verse goes on to say, "the wickedness of the wicked person
  • 00:22:30.431 --> 00:22:33.067
  • Will be on him."
  • 00:22:33.067 --> 00:22:35.302
  • Sin is punishable, but you want to hear the good news?
  • 00:22:35.302 --> 00:22:38.706
  • Sin is redeemable.
  • 00:22:38.706 --> 00:22:40.307
  • It's redeemable.
