  • See, most of us have a completely wrong perspective of

  • We forget that jesus was a little jewish boy living in a

  • In the jewish culture of the day.

  • Many years ago, i listened to a preacher talk about this very

  • Same thing and he talked about how young jewish people are born

  • And raised in a culture that taught the word of god.

  • You see, for thousands of years, the jewish people have believed

  • That god gave moses the first five books

  • Of the bible, they call that the torah.

  • Torah means instructions or the way.

  • And culturally speaking, it's important to

  • Understand that the torah was the primary focus

  • Of their life back then and it is today.

  • But not only is it the primary focus of their life, it's also

  • The foundation of their educational system.

  • You see, all jewish boys and girls at age six go to school,

  • But they don't go to a public school, they go to a private

  • School in the church, the synagogue, their teacher is a

  • Local rabbi, and the torah is the core curriculum of every

  • Single class in every single day.

  • After kids go to school from six to ten, they memorize the

  • First five books of the bible and then they

  • Graduate age ten, they're done with school.

  • Then they would start focusing on a trade or a job, that's when

  • They would start apprenticing or working in the family business.

  • But there were some people that said, "i'm not going to go

  • Provide for my family or work another job

  • At this point because i am an elite student."

  • I'm talking about the top-tier student.

  • Those students actually took another step in their

  • Educational journey and they began what was called bet

  • Midrash, bet midrash or what is house of study.

  • And that step, you have to understand

  • This is the cream of the crop kid.

  • They would go to a rabbi, they would go to him and they would

  • Apply to that rabbi to become one of his disciples

  • He wanted to be a disciple of that rabbi.

  • When a young person would apply to be a disciple of a rabbi,

  • Questioning, like a big test to see what they knew

  • And to see what their potential was.

  • If a rabbi would put you through the series of question and

  • A famous phrase in that culture, which is,

  • Today, i want us to read a well-known story in

  • I want you to imagine jesus along the sea of galilee and

  • This rabbi, the rabbi of all rabbis is walking along the sea

  • And out of the corner of his eyes, he sees a couple of boys.

  • Verse 18 says, "as he was walking along the sea of

  • Galilee, he saw two brothers, simon, who is

  • Called peter and his brother andrew.

  • They were casting a net into the sea for they were fishermen.

  • 'follow me' he told them, 'and i will make you fish for people.'

  • Immediately they left their nets and followed him."

  • So jesus is approaching these two young men, simon, who's

  • And the bible clearly states that they

  • Were fishermen, they were fishermen.

  • The question is, why?

  • Why were they, fishermen? you know why?

  • Because they were plying their trade, which lets us know

  • Culturally speaking, at some point in their educational

  • Journey, they arrived at a place where they weren't good enough.

  • Potential, and no rabbi was willing to extend to

  • Them this invitation or to accept them.

  • You know, i've read that so many times and i've often

  • Wondered, you know, why were they so quick to

  • Drop their nets and to just follow jesus?

  • Why are they so quick to just drop everything they know,

  • Everything they depended on, their livelihood,

  • Their job and to just follow jesus?

  • But when you look at it through this lens,

  • It's pretty easy to see why.

  • It's because for the very first time in their life, a rabbi

  • Thought they were good enough, a rabbi saw their

  • Potential, a rabbi looked at them and

  • Said, "you are qualified to follow me."

  • If a rabbi said, "come, follow me."

  • You have to understand that is a phrase that they longed to hear.

  • That's why in verse 20, it says, "immediately."

  • Listen, when jesus calls his disciples, it's

  • The lens of that same--that same concept and it says in verse 22,

  • Because that verb made can also be

  • And so you've got this silhouette of jesus walking on

  • The water, and then it gets to verse 26 and it says, "when the

  • Disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified.

  • 'it's a ghost,' they said, and they cried out in fear.

  • Immediately jesus spoke to them, 'have courage; it is i,

  • When you read the scriptures, peter is the only one that we

  • We think that for a couple of reasons.
