  • Multiplied exponentially in chapter 10.

  • This is jesus's recruited followers.
  • 00:09:04.827 --> 00:09:06.762
  • He's been training disciples; it's a theme of luke, and now
  • 00:09:06.762 --> 00:09:10.666
  • He's empowering them to do the things that they've seen him do.
  • 00:09:10.666 --> 00:09:15.137
  • And we get to chapter 10, he's really gonna take the lid off.
  • 00:09:15.137 --> 00:09:20.009
  • But we've gotta watch what happens now in chapter 9 because
  • 00:09:20.009 --> 00:09:22.678
  • Luke is telling us some things.
  • 00:09:22.678 --> 00:09:24.347
  • Verse 7: "now herod the tetrarch," fancy word for
  • 00:09:24.347 --> 00:09:28.317
  • Governor--when herod the great--herod the tetrarch's
  • 00:09:28.317 --> 00:09:32.154
  • Father was herod the great, the herod the great that killed
  • 00:09:32.154 --> 00:09:34.523
  • The babies in bethlehem.
  • 00:09:34.523 --> 00:09:36.492
  • On his death, his kingdom was divided into four.
  • 00:09:36.492 --> 00:09:38.961
  • So this is the--one of his sons, herod the tetrarch, heard about
  • 00:09:38.961 --> 00:09:43.532
  • All that was going on, and he was perplexed because some were
  • 00:09:43.532 --> 00:09:46.836
  • Saying that john had been raised from the dead, and others that
  • 00:09:46.836 --> 00:09:49.171
  • Elijah had appeared, and still others that one of the prophets
  • 00:09:49.171 --> 00:09:51.607
  • Of long ago had come back to life.
  • 00:09:51.607 --> 00:09:54.744
  • But herod said, "i beheaded john.
  • 00:09:54.744 --> 00:09:57.913
  • Who, then, is this i hear such things about?"
  • 00:09:57.913 --> 00:10:00.916
  • And he tried to see jesus.
  • 00:10:00.916 --> 00:10:04.720
  • It's a very brazen passage.
  • 00:10:04.720 --> 00:10:07.523
  • Herod that's mentioned here, is the son of the herod the great
  • 00:10:07.523 --> 00:10:10.726
  • That we meet earlier in the gospels.
  • 00:10:10.726 --> 00:10:14.363
  • Herod the great is the one who killed the babies in bethlehem
  • 00:10:14.363 --> 00:10:17.066
  • At the time of jesus's birth because of the message
  • 00:10:17.066 --> 00:10:20.369
  • Of the wise men: "we've traveled a long way to worship the king
  • 00:10:20.369 --> 00:10:23.973
  • Of the jews."
  • 00:10:23.973 --> 00:10:25.508
  • And he was not about to tolerate any pretenders to his power.
  • 00:10:25.508 --> 00:10:29.945
  • And absent knowing who the baby was, he simply killed all the
  • 00:10:29.945 --> 00:10:32.882
  • Children that fit within the time window the wise men
  • 00:10:32.882 --> 00:10:35.618
  • Told him about, all the male children two and under.
  • 00:10:35.618 --> 00:10:39.889
  • Now, this is herod the great, the tetrarch, in verse 7, his
  • 00:10:39.889 --> 00:10:42.892
  • Son, who has beheaded john the baptist because of his message.
  • 00:10:42.892 --> 00:10:48.864
  • He arrested him because of his message.
  • 00:10:48.864 --> 00:10:51.500
  • His wife was wicked and asked for john the baptist's head,
  • 00:10:51.500 --> 00:10:55.237
  • But heron was compliant, he had him beheaded.
  • 00:10:55.237 --> 00:11:00.509
  • Now, herod wants to see jesus.
  • 00:11:00.509 --> 00:11:02.311
  • What is very clear is he has no fear of god, none whatsoever.
  • 00:11:02.311 --> 00:11:11.821
  • That's not a 21st-century thing; that's been taking place
  • 00:11:11.821 --> 00:11:15.124
  • For as long as men and women have had authority.
  • 00:11:15.124 --> 00:11:18.728
  • In fact, i think luke is pointing us to something
  • 00:11:18.728 --> 00:11:20.763
  • A consistent opposition to the purposes of god.
  • 00:11:20.763 --> 00:11:24.400
  • See, it's more than having a bad governor
  • 00:11:24.400 --> 00:11:28.204
  • Or an antagonistic leader.
  • 00:11:28.204 --> 00:11:31.574
  • This resistance, this hatred for the purposes of god
  • 00:11:31.574 --> 00:11:34.577
  • And the plans of god, by this point in the story that
  • 00:11:34.577 --> 00:11:37.446
  • Luke is telling, has crossed decades and multiple persons
  • 00:11:37.446 --> 00:11:41.517
  • And multiple administrations.
  • 00:11:41.517 --> 00:11:44.086
  • I believe the best analysis is it's a spirit at work.
  • 00:11:44.086 --> 00:11:48.891
  • I tell you that because we need to be more awake, more alert,
  • 00:11:48.891 --> 00:11:52.461
  • More engaged, more conscious that the spirit of antichrist
  • 00:11:52.461 --> 00:11:56.365
  • Is present in the earth to oppose the purposes of god.
  • 00:11:56.365 --> 00:12:01.070
  • And if all we had was luke's narrative, we could come
  • 00:12:01.070 --> 00:12:04.106
  • To the conclusion that that spirit is murderous,
  • 00:12:04.106 --> 00:12:06.108
  • Treacherous, deceitful.
  • 00:12:06.108 --> 00:12:09.411
  • Herod the great said to the wise men, "you go find the child
  • 00:12:09.411 --> 00:12:12.314
  • And then come back and tell me where he is,
  • 00:12:12.314 --> 00:12:13.916
  • So that i may worship him too."
  • 00:12:13.916 --> 00:12:16.919
  • They had no intention of worshiping that child.
  • 00:12:16.919 --> 00:12:21.023
  • Will you allow me to suggest we should be more aware and walk
  • 00:12:21.023 --> 00:12:24.226
  • With greater prudence?
  • 00:12:24.226 --> 00:12:29.231
  • Jesus is implementing a training program, and i don't think it's
  • 00:12:29.231 --> 00:12:33.469
  • An accident that luke includes, in this commissioning of the
  • 00:12:33.469 --> 00:12:37.373
  • Twelve, the kind of adversity they face: a wicked, godless
  • 00:12:37.373 --> 00:12:44.313
  • Governor who didn't hesitate in the least to behead
  • 00:12:44.313 --> 00:12:49.752
  • John the baptist.
  • 00:12:49.752 --> 00:12:53.956
  • Same chapter, verse 12: "late in the afternoon," jesus is
  • 00:12:53.956 --> 00:12:58.627
  • Preaching to a large crowd of people, and he's preached
  • 00:12:58.627 --> 00:13:02.765
  • Through the morning into the afternoon--our services are way
  • 00:13:02.765 --> 00:13:05.100
  • Too short.
  • 00:13:05.100 --> 00:13:07.903
  • Male: yeah.
  • 00:13:07.903 --> 00:13:09.238
  • Allen: yeah, one "amen," and they all saw you.
  • 00:13:09.238 --> 00:13:11.941
  • You'd better slip out now.
  • 00:13:11.941 --> 00:13:14.343
  • "late in the afternoon the twelve came to jesus and said,
  • 00:13:14.410 --> 00:13:16.879
  • 'send the crowd away so they can go to the surrounding villages
  • 00:13:16.879 --> 00:13:19.882
  • And countryside and find food and lodging, because we're
  • 00:13:19.882 --> 00:13:22.952
  • In a remote place here.'"
  • 00:13:22.952 --> 00:13:25.287
  • And jesus replied--the disciples come to jesus and say
  • 00:13:25.287 --> 00:13:28.757
  • The crowd's really tired.
  • 00:13:28.757 --> 00:13:32.127
  • Who do you think is really tired?
  • 00:13:32.127 --> 00:13:35.397
  • The disciples?
  • 00:13:35.397 --> 00:13:37.633
  • I think that's a reasonable conclusion.
  • 00:13:37.633 --> 00:13:39.368
  • And jesus said, "you give them something to eat."
  • 00:13:39.368 --> 00:13:42.671
  • And they answered, "we only have five loaves of bread and
  • 00:13:42.671 --> 00:13:44.740
  • Two fish unless we go and buy food for this crowd."
  • 00:13:44.740 --> 00:13:48.210
  • And luke slips in there's 5,000 men there, so there's thousands
  • 00:13:48.210 --> 00:13:51.914
  • Of people, more than that.
  • 00:13:51.914 --> 00:13:54.049
  • He said to his disciples, "have them sit down in groups of about
  • 00:13:54.049 --> 00:13:56.685
  • 50 each."
  • 00:13:56.685 --> 00:13:58.487
  • Now, what we're gonna-- the balance of this chapter is
  • 00:13:58.487 --> 00:14:02.124
  • A series of training exercises that jesus has with
  • 00:14:02.124 --> 00:14:04.894
  • The disciples, demonstrations of the authority and power
  • 00:14:04.894 --> 00:14:08.497
  • That he gave them in verses 1 and 2.
  • 00:14:08.497 --> 00:14:11.967
  • And if you listen to the language and you watch
  • 00:14:11.967 --> 00:14:13.636
  • The words that jesus uses, and the way that luke is telling
  • 00:14:13.636 --> 00:14:16.272
  • The story--because that's important.
  • 00:14:16.272 --> 00:14:18.507
  • Remember, when luke writes the gospel, he hasn't just collected
  • 00:14:18.507 --> 00:14:21.210
  • Miracles and parables and kind of dumped him in a bucket
  • 00:14:21.210 --> 00:14:24.313
  • And pulled them out and arranged them on a page.
  • 00:14:24.313 --> 00:14:26.448
  • He's trying to take the reader on a journey to help you become
  • 00:14:26.448 --> 00:14:29.184
  • A disciple.
  • 00:14:29.184 --> 00:14:31.220
  • So in chapter 9, jesus gathers the disciples together and says,
  • 00:14:31.220 --> 00:14:34.490
  • "i'm giving you power and authority to go do the kind
  • 00:14:34.490 --> 00:14:37.559
  • Of things you've seen me doing."
  • 00:14:37.559 --> 00:14:40.396
  • And now luke is going to give us a series of examples of training
  • 00:14:40.396 --> 00:14:43.966
  • Exercises with the disciples.
  • 00:14:43.966 --> 00:14:47.369
  • And the first one he introduces us into, after he warns us of
  • 00:14:47.369 --> 00:14:50.339
  • The kind of antagonism we should anticipate, at the highest
  • 00:14:50.339 --> 00:14:55.277
  • Levels of power and authority, he said there'll be opposition.
  • 00:14:55.277 --> 00:14:59.648
  • And now jesus has ministered to a large crowd of people,
  • 00:14:59.648 --> 00:15:01.951
  • And the disciples are still watching.
  • 00:15:01.951 --> 00:15:03.953
  • And the disciples come and say, "they're really tired
  • 00:15:03.953 --> 00:15:06.255
  • And they're worn out, send them away.
  • 00:15:06.255 --> 00:15:07.890
  • There's--chick-fil-a is closed, it's sunday."
  • 00:15:07.890 --> 00:15:13.462
  • And jesus says, "you feed them."
  • 00:15:13.462 --> 00:15:19.668
  • Allen: we have partnered with our friends tim and david barton
  • 00:15:23.872 --> 00:15:26.308
  • To make available to you a two-volume set on
  • 00:15:26.308 --> 00:15:29.078
  • American history.
  • 00:15:29.078 --> 00:15:30.412
  • It's "the american story."
  • 00:15:30.412 --> 00:15:31.780
  • And it focuses on the part of american history that's been
  • 00:15:31.780 --> 00:15:33.949
  • Lost in much of our public education these days.
  • 00:15:33.949 --> 00:15:36.852
  • It's god's engagement with this nation and how he brought the
  • 00:15:36.852 --> 00:15:40.122
  • American story forward.
  • 00:15:40.122 --> 00:15:41.590
  • Our nation is more than politics or republicans and democrats.
  • 00:15:41.590 --> 00:15:45.027
  • It's god working in the lives of people to shape a nation that
  • 00:15:45.027 --> 00:15:48.597
  • Had brought forth his purposes in the world.
  • 00:15:48.597 --> 00:15:50.866
  • I believe it's an important part of our faith journey this year,
  • 00:15:50.866 --> 00:15:53.836
  • And i believe the books will be a blessing to you.
  • 00:15:53.836 --> 00:15:56.205
  • Announcer: the 250th anniversary of our nation is an important
  • 00:15:56.205 --> 00:15:59.675
  • Milestone we shouldn't rush past, because history matters.
  • 00:15:59.675 --> 00:16:04.213
  • "the american story" is a two-volume book series that
  • 00:16:04.213 --> 00:16:07.049
  • Explores how faith, courage, and conviction helped shape the
  • 00:16:07.049 --> 00:16:10.686
  • United states from the very beginning.
  • 00:16:10.686 --> 00:16:13.122
  • Gain a greater understanding of where we've been so you can
  • 00:16:13.122 --> 00:16:16.191
  • Protect and defend our nation's biblical foundations as we
  • 00:16:16.191 --> 00:16:19.194
  • Move forward.
  • 00:16:19.194 --> 00:16:20.529

  • Allenjackson.com or call...
  • 00:16:23.932 --> 00:16:29.371
  • Allen: i would submit to you that the feeding of the 5,000 is
  • 00:16:32.441 --> 00:16:34.843
  • Far less about the people that are there and far more about
  • 00:16:34.843 --> 00:16:37.946
  • The disciples.
  • 00:16:37.946 --> 00:16:40.549
  • Jesus simply breaks the--blesses the food and breaks it, and says
  • 00:16:40.549 --> 00:16:43.719
  • To the disciples, "give it to the people."
  • 00:16:43.719 --> 00:16:45.487
  • Somewhere along the way, the disciples realize there's
  • 00:16:45.487 --> 00:16:47.990
  • A miracle taking place.
  • 00:16:47.990 --> 00:16:50.492
  • Remember the--when jesus took the disciples to a wedding, and
  • 00:16:50.492 --> 00:16:54.363
  • They ran out of wine, and mary tried the little intervention?
  • 00:16:54.363 --> 00:16:59.935
  • And jesus had him fill the water pots, and then he said to one
  • 00:16:59.935 --> 00:17:02.471
  • Of the servants, "take some of that out of the pot and take it
  • 00:17:02.471 --> 00:17:05.274
  • To the master of ceremonies."
  • 00:17:05.274 --> 00:17:07.376
  • The person that knew there was a miracle was the servants.
  • 00:17:07.376 --> 00:17:11.680
  • The master of the ceremonies didn't know.
  • 00:17:11.680 --> 00:17:13.082
  • They thought they'd found some better wine.
  • 00:17:13.082 --> 00:17:15.818
  • The people that enjoyed it, they didn't know.
  • 00:17:15.818 --> 00:17:19.054
  • And in this case, it's the disciples that are the one
  • 00:17:19.054 --> 00:17:21.623
  • That are inside the narrative where the power of god is
  • 00:17:21.623 --> 00:17:24.726
  • Being demonstrated.
  • 00:17:24.726 --> 00:17:26.061
  • They keep breaking off bread and fish, and they keep having more,
  • 00:17:26.061 --> 00:17:30.232
  • Like they're gonna pick up more basketfuls afterwards than
  • 00:17:30.232 --> 00:17:32.668
  • They could have filled with what they started with.
  • 00:17:32.668 --> 00:17:35.838
  • They're learning something new about jesus, but it doesn't
  • 00:17:35.838 --> 00:17:38.140
  • Stop there.
  • 00:17:38.140 --> 00:17:39.475
  • Verse 18: "once, when jesus was praying in private and
  • 00:17:39.475 --> 00:17:42.744
  • His disciples were with him, he asked them, 'who did the crowd
  • 00:17:42.744 --> 00:17:45.647
  • Say i am?'"
  • 00:17:45.647 --> 00:17:46.982
  • Again, this is a a disciple-training moment.
  • 00:17:46.982 --> 00:17:48.350
  • Who did the crowd say i am?
  • 00:17:48.350 --> 00:17:49.718
  • Tell me what you've heard."
  • 00:17:49.718 --> 00:17:53.355
  • They replied, "well, some say john the baptist, and others say
  • 00:17:53.355 --> 00:17:55.757
  • Elijah, and still others, one of the prophets come back to life."
  • 00:17:55.757 --> 00:18:01.363
  • They don't tell him everything they've heard because others
  • 00:18:01.363 --> 00:18:04.967
  • Have said he's a drunkard and a glutton, right?
  • 00:18:04.967 --> 00:18:09.738
  • We've read that.
  • 00:18:09.738 --> 00:18:11.540
  • They're just giving the good reports.
  • 00:18:11.540 --> 00:18:15.611
  • But jesus turns it around and he says, "but what about you?
  • 00:18:15.611 --> 00:18:19.248
  • Who do you say i am?"
  • 00:18:19.248 --> 00:18:22.050
  • And peter said, "you're the messiah."
  • 00:18:22.050 --> 00:18:25.587

  • He can be the result of a virgin birth.
  • 00:19:09.164 --> 00:19:12.601
  • He'll conquer death before we're done with the gospel.
  • 00:19:12.601 --> 00:19:15.837
  • That's my lord and yours.
  • 00:19:15.837 --> 00:19:18.140
  • That's the message we have for the world.
  • 00:19:18.140 --> 00:19:20.642
  • There's a power and authority that transcends all the power
  • 00:19:20.642 --> 00:19:23.979
  • And authority that's available to us.
  • 00:19:23.979 --> 00:19:25.480
  • And there's a great deal of things available to us.
  • 00:19:25.480 --> 00:19:27.482
  • There's economic power, and military power, and political
  • 00:19:27.482 --> 00:19:30.552

  • 00:19:44.066 --> 00:19:46.101

  • 00:21:51.560 --> 00:21:57.332

  • 00:22:10.946 --> 00:22:15.851

  • 00:22:15.851 --> 00:22:19.287
  • So much more valuable, so much more significant.
  • 00:22:19.287 --> 00:22:23.492
  • The great diminishment of your faith is to think that your
  • 00:22:23.492 --> 00:22:26.027
  • Faith is only about getting all you can, and canning
  • 00:22:26.027 --> 00:22:28.530
  • What you get, and sitting on the can while you're here.
  • 00:22:28.530 --> 00:22:31.566
  • We are in preparation for something.
  • 00:22:34.136 --> 00:22:36.571
  • Jesus came to this earth, but when you read his story,
  • 00:22:36.571 --> 00:22:39.608
  • You don't imagine his goal was an applause line
  • 00:22:39.608 --> 00:22:42.811
  • While he was here.
  • 00:22:42.811 --> 00:22:46.047
  • It's very clear he was on an assignment for something
  • 00:22:46.047 --> 00:22:49.584
  • Far more significant, far greater, and so are we.
  • 00:22:49.584 --> 00:22:55.724
  • I think it's worth noting, at least in passing, that ahab
  • 00:22:55.724 --> 00:22:58.260
  • And jezebel didn't show up to talk to jesus, moses and elijah.
  • 00:22:58.260 --> 00:23:06.501
  • It's the last verse, i think that is perhaps most significant
  • 00:23:06.501 --> 00:23:09.371
  • In this ninth chapter, though.
  • 00:23:09.371 --> 00:23:11.740
  • It's gonna become a theme in this chapter.
  • 00:23:11.740 --> 00:23:13.675
  • It's the introduction of something that is new to us.
  • 00:23:13.675 --> 00:23:16.711
  • It says moses and elijah spoke about his departure--
  • 00:23:16.711 --> 00:23:23.418
  • Well, that's--if it stopped right there, we might think
  • 00:23:23.418 --> 00:23:25.287
  • He was taking a trip--about his departure, which he was about
  • 00:23:25.287 --> 00:23:32.661
  • To bring to fulfillment in jerusalem.
  • 00:23:32.661 --> 00:23:34.830
  • Moses and elijah are talking about his crucifixion,
  • 00:23:34.830 --> 00:23:38.099
  • His burial, his resurrection.
  • 00:23:38.099 --> 00:23:43.872
  • We're looking at the game plan again.
  • 00:23:43.872 --> 00:23:45.841
  • Luke has introduced something new to the narrative, and jesus
  • 00:23:45.841 --> 00:23:49.511
  • Took peter, and john, and james with him.
  • 00:23:49.511 --> 00:23:52.581
  • They're gonna be central figures when we get to the book of acts,
  • 00:23:52.581 --> 00:23:56.751
  • Luke's explanation of how the church found its footing
  • 00:23:56.751 --> 00:24:00.255
  • After jesus's ascension.
  • 00:24:00.255 --> 00:24:02.257
  • And peter, and john, and james, will be right in the center of
  • 00:24:02.257 --> 00:24:06.261
  • That narrative.
  • 00:24:06.261 --> 00:24:08.964
  • Same chapter, verse 37: "the next day."
  • 00:24:08.964 --> 00:24:12.467
  • Next day from what?
  • 00:24:12.467 --> 00:24:13.802
  • The next day after the transfiguration,
  • 00:24:13.802 --> 00:24:15.670
  • "when they came down from the mountain."
  • 00:24:16.738 --> 00:24:19.975

  • They've been acknowledging in public that jesus is the christ.
