  • 00:05:21.403 --> 00:05:23.705
  • So luke is telling us a story.
  • 00:05:23.705 --> 00:05:25.474
  • It's a narrative with an objective.
  • 00:05:25.474 --> 00:05:28.410
  • Now, our familiarity with the gospels is principally in the
  • 00:05:28.410 --> 00:05:30.912
  • Jesus story, the circumstances of his birth, the uniqueness of
  • 00:05:30.912 --> 00:05:34.616
  • That virgin birth.
  • 00:05:34.616 --> 00:05:35.951
  • Luke gives us a very clear window into that.
  • 00:05:35.951 --> 00:05:37.919
  • The visit from the angel gabriel to a teenager in nazareth, and
  • 00:05:37.919 --> 00:05:41.890
  • We follow jesus through and there's some miracle stories and
  • 00:05:41.890 --> 00:05:45.861
  • There's some healings and we're kind of familiar with those and
  • 00:05:45.861 --> 00:05:48.797
  • Then we get to the conclusion, the music builds, it's
  • 00:05:48.797 --> 00:05:51.900
  • The crescendo.
  • 00:05:51.900 --> 00:05:53.235

  • 00:05:57.739 --> 00:05:59.307
  • It's the redemptive story of jesus.
  • 00:05:59.307 --> 00:06:03.111
  • I believe it, but it's not the only story in the gospel
  • 00:06:03.111 --> 00:06:07.215
  • Of luke.
  • 00:06:07.215 --> 00:06:09.117

  • 00:06:09.117 --> 00:06:12.821
  • A bit more intentionality, it's very easy to read past that.
  • 00:06:12.821 --> 00:06:17.392
  • Luke's gospel certainly presents a narrative about
  • 00:06:17.392 --> 00:06:20.095
  • Jesus's arrival and his redemptive work, but it also
  • 00:06:20.095 --> 00:06:22.597
  • Reflects an opportunity for the people that jesus
  • 00:06:22.597 --> 00:06:25.267
  • Walked amongst.
  • 00:06:25.267 --> 00:06:27.669
  • The messiah was there.
  • 00:06:27.669 --> 00:06:31.206

  • 00:18:26.621 --> 00:18:30.057
  • The holiness, the righteousness, and the purity of god.
  • 00:18:30.057 --> 00:18:32.860
  • We do not have the freedom and the liberty to practice
  • 00:18:32.860 --> 00:18:36.130
  • Ungodliness and imagine we can be included amongst the godly.
  • 00:18:36.130 --> 00:18:42.236
  • We don't, so we're going to temple with jesus.
  • 00:18:42.236 --> 00:18:48.776
  • We're gonna listen to what he has to say.
  • 00:18:48.776 --> 00:18:50.278
  • I didn't forget where i said we were headed.
  • 00:18:50.278 --> 00:18:53.714
  • In luke chapter 2, it's very near the end--the beginning of
  • 00:18:53.714 --> 00:18:56.717
  • His story, jesus is just 12.
  • 00:18:56.717 --> 00:18:59.253
  • He's been taken to jerusalem for the holiday the first time.
  • 00:18:59.253 --> 00:19:03.124
  • It's a signal of his recognition that he's entered manhood.
  • 00:19:03.124 --> 00:19:06.594
  • And mary and joseph lost him.
  • 00:19:06.594 --> 00:19:09.497
  • Awkward, so they go back--"when they didn't find him, they went
  • 00:19:09.497 --> 00:19:13.568
  • Back to jerusalem to look, and after three days they found him
  • 00:19:13.568 --> 00:19:16.337
  • In the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to
  • 00:19:16.337 --> 00:19:19.840
  • Them and asking them questions.
  • 00:19:19.840 --> 00:19:21.209
  • And everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and
  • 00:19:21.209 --> 00:19:23.778
  • His answers.
  • 00:19:23.778 --> 00:19:25.112
  • When his parents saw him, they were astonished.
  • 00:19:25.112 --> 00:19:27.448
  • And his mother said to him, 'son, why have you treated us
  • 00:19:27.448 --> 00:19:30.151
  • Like this?
  • 00:19:30.151 --> 00:19:32.019
  • Your father and i have been anxiously searching for you.'"
  • 00:19:32.019 --> 00:19:36.857
  • And i think what's not written but probably understood that
  • 00:19:36.857 --> 00:19:39.794
  • "it's better that i found you than your dad did."
  • 00:19:39.794 --> 00:19:45.933
  • And jesus answered, "'why were you searching for me?'"
  • 00:19:45.933 --> 00:19:49.737
  • And we've all been coached, almost ad nauseam, that jesus is
  • 00:19:49.737 --> 00:19:53.040
  • Always kind,
  • 00:19:53.040 --> 00:19:55.576
  • That everything he had to say was just like about a group hug
  • 00:19:55.576 --> 00:19:58.246
  • And a handshake.
  • 00:19:58.246 --> 00:20:00.081
  • He handed out candy and everybody was happy.
  • 00:20:00.081 --> 00:20:02.617
  • But even at 12 years old, his answer to his mom--they left to
  • 00:20:02.617 --> 00:20:08.689
  • Go home and he didn't go with them intentionally.
  • 00:20:08.689 --> 00:20:12.793
  • He didn't tell them, he didn't send them a text, he apparently
  • 00:20:12.793 --> 00:20:18.966
  • Didn't even tell any of his friends, he just quietly
  • 00:20:18.966 --> 00:20:21.602
  • Stayed behind.
  • 00:20:21.602 --> 00:20:23.571
  • So after several days of anxiety and disrupted plans and
  • 00:20:23.571 --> 00:20:27.141
  • Searching for him, mary finds jesus and he said, "'well,
  • 00:20:27.141 --> 00:20:31.245
  • Didn't you know i had to be here?'"
  • 00:20:31.245 --> 00:20:35.116
  • I'm pretty sure, when i was 12, if i'd have caused that mass
  • 00:20:35.116 --> 00:20:37.618
  • Disruption and that had been my answer, it would not have gone
  • 00:20:37.618 --> 00:20:39.987
  • Well with me.
  • 00:20:39.987 --> 00:20:45.693
  • And luke simply reports in verse 50 that "they didn't understand
  • 00:20:45.693 --> 00:20:48.696
  • What he was saying."
  • 00:20:48.696 --> 00:20:51.332
  • So we meet jesus at 12, really at the beginning of his
  • 00:20:51.332 --> 00:20:53.868
  • Public ministry.
  • 00:20:53.868 --> 00:20:55.236
  • I mean, it isn't gonna take place for almost another 20
  • 00:20:55.236 --> 00:20:57.238
  • Years, but he's in the temple, talking to the leaders.
  • 00:20:57.238 --> 00:21:02.143
  • Luke chapter 4, jesus has been baptized and he's ready now to
  • 00:21:02.143 --> 00:21:06.147
  • Step into the public.
  • 00:21:06.147 --> 00:21:07.481
  • He's an adult, 30 years of age, and it says in luke 4 in verse
  • 00:21:07.481 --> 00:21:10.284
  • 9, "the devil led jesus to jerusalem and had him stand on
  • 00:21:10.284 --> 00:21:14.188
  • The highest point of the temple, and he said, 'if you're the son
  • 00:21:14.188 --> 00:21:17.491
  • Of god, throw yourself down from here.'"
  • 00:21:17.491 --> 00:21:19.026
  • The devil knew very well who he was.
  • 00:21:19.026 --> 00:21:21.696
  • He knew him before the earth was created.
  • 00:21:21.696 --> 00:21:25.366
  • He knew him in all of his glory and his majesty.
  • 00:21:25.366 --> 00:21:27.735
  • We know that because the demons know who he is.
  • 00:21:27.735 --> 00:21:31.772
  • When he steps into the synagogue in capernaum, the demons cries
  • 00:21:31.772 --> 00:21:34.875
  • Out, "i know who you are."
  • 00:21:34.875 --> 00:21:37.878
  • So i promise you the devil knew who he was.
  • 00:21:37.878 --> 00:21:42.083
  • He's tempted him.
  • 00:21:42.083 --> 00:21:44.485
  • The frailty of the human condition makes him vulnerable
  • 00:21:44.485 --> 00:21:47.321
  • In a way that satan has never known him.
  • 00:21:47.321 --> 00:21:49.256
  • And he stands him on the pinnacle of the temple, the
  • 00:21:49.256 --> 00:21:51.192
  • Highest point of the temple, which is quite an elevated
  • 00:21:51.192 --> 00:21:53.627
  • Place, and said, "'if you're the son of god--'"
  • 00:21:53.627 --> 00:21:57.998
  • I don't think it's accidental or incidental that satan begins the
  • 00:21:57.998 --> 00:22:00.768
  • Temptation at the temple and jesus quotes scripture to him.
  • 00:22:00.768 --> 00:22:07.441
  • In luke 19, jesus is approaching jerusalem.
  • 00:22:07.441 --> 00:22:12.313
  • It's the last of his trips there.
  • 00:22:12.313 --> 00:22:14.648
  • This trip is going to end with some horrible things, betrayal
  • 00:22:14.648 --> 00:22:19.687
  • And arrest and crucifixion.
  • 00:22:19.687 --> 00:22:21.789
  • Yes, we celebrate the resurrection, but the path
  • 00:22:21.789 --> 00:22:24.325
  • Between his entry into the city and that resurrection is brutal
  • 00:22:24.325 --> 00:22:27.962
  • Beyond consideration.
  • 00:22:27.962 --> 00:22:30.464
  • And as jesus approaches the city--he's approaching from the
  • 00:22:30.464 --> 00:22:34.402
  • East and you come down the mount of olives and there's the kidron
  • 00:22:34.402 --> 00:22:37.004
  • Valley and then before you, the city of jerusalem.
  • 00:22:37.004 --> 00:22:39.306
  • Because, although it's built on a hill, the mount of olives
  • 00:22:39.306 --> 00:22:41.375
  • Is taller.
  • 00:22:41.375 --> 00:22:42.710
  • So as you crest the mount of olives, the whole city spreads
  • 00:22:42.710 --> 00:22:45.012
  • Before you and immediately in front of you is the temple,
  • 00:22:45.012 --> 00:22:48.182
  • Herod's temple, the second temple.
  • 00:22:48.182 --> 00:22:51.685
  • It's this amazing, beautiful structure, one of the wonders of
  • 00:22:51.685 --> 00:22:54.388
  • The ancient world.
  • 00:22:54.388 --> 00:22:55.756
  • And as jesus comes into jerusalem, luke writes for us
  • 00:22:55.756 --> 00:22:58.159
  • That, "as he approached jerusalem and saw the city,
  • 00:22:58.159 --> 00:23:00.027
  • He wept."
  • 00:23:00.027 --> 00:23:02.596
  • It's a triumphal entry.
  • 00:23:02.596 --> 00:23:03.931
  • The children are saying, "hosanna to the king!"
  • 00:23:03.931 --> 00:23:08.302
  • But jesus's emotions are very different.
  • 00:23:08.302 --> 00:23:10.571
  • He's not basking in the celebratory attitude of
  • 00:23:10.571 --> 00:23:14.041
  • His arrival.
  • 00:23:14.041 --> 00:23:17.545
  • And then jesus as prophet said, "'if you'd only known on this
  • 00:23:17.545 --> 00:23:20.314
  • Day what would bring you peace- but now it's hidden from
  • 00:23:20.314 --> 00:23:23.117
  • Your eyes.
  • 00:23:23.117 --> 00:23:24.718
  • The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an
  • 00:23:24.718 --> 00:23:26.854
  • Embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on
  • 00:23:26.854 --> 00:23:29.223
  • Every side.'"
  • 00:23:29.223 --> 00:23:30.558
  • He's describing a war, a siege built against jerusalem.
  • 00:23:30.558 --> 00:23:33.894
  • If you stand on that same mount of olives today against the the
  • 00:23:33.894 --> 00:23:37.298
  • Wall of herod's temple mount, it's still there, it's the dirt
  • 00:23:37.298 --> 00:23:41.502
  • That was piled up as a part of that romans's siege ramp.
  • 00:23:41.502 --> 00:23:43.904
  • What jesus said in luke 19 you can see with your eyes on the
  • 00:23:43.904 --> 00:23:47.408
  • Mount of olives today.
  • 00:23:47.408 --> 00:23:51.479
  • "'they'll dash you to the ground, you and the children
  • 00:23:51.479 --> 00:23:53.581
  • Within your walls.
  • 00:23:53.581 --> 00:23:55.149
  • They'll not leave one stone on another, because you didn't
  • 00:23:55.149 --> 00:23:57.485
  • Recognize the time of god's coming to you.'"
  • 00:23:57.485 --> 00:23:59.954
  • For people that say jesus wasn't political, that he didn't engage
  • 00:23:59.954 --> 00:24:03.657
  • Current events, you need to listen to what he's saying.
  • 00:24:03.657 --> 00:24:08.162
  • He said, "the romans are coming for you and there's nothing you
  • 00:24:08.162 --> 00:24:12.700
  • Can do.
  • 00:24:12.700 --> 00:24:16.670
  • You didn't choose the kingdom and now you'll get
  • 00:24:16.670 --> 00:24:19.773
  • Something else."
  • 00:24:19.773 --> 00:24:22.309
  • See, the choices of our lives have consequences.
  • 00:24:22.309 --> 00:24:26.046
  • God's covenant with the jewish people is not interrupted.
  • 00:24:26.046 --> 00:24:30.251
  • It's as much enforced today.
  • 00:24:30.251 --> 00:24:31.685
  • He's established the jewish people in that little strip of
  • 00:24:31.685 --> 00:24:33.888
  • Land that he promised them, much to the consternation of
  • 00:24:33.888 --> 00:24:37.124
  • The world.
  • 00:24:37.124 --> 00:24:39.393
  • There are missiles launched their way on a daily basis in
  • 00:24:39.393 --> 00:24:42.830
  • Tiny israel, about what--99.6% of the land in the middle east
  • 00:24:42.830 --> 00:24:48.502
  • Belongs to the muslims, and that little tiny percentage that is
  • 00:24:48.502 --> 00:24:51.038
  • Israel flourishes.
  • 00:24:51.038 --> 00:24:52.940
  • Allen: we're not the first generation who turned our backs
  • 00:24:53.007 --> 00:24:55.442
  • On god to have taken his blessings and imagine that we
  • 00:24:55.442 --> 00:24:57.811
  • Deserve them or even earned them, but we can be one of those
  • 00:24:57.811 --> 00:25:00.814
  • Generations that turns back to god in humility and repentance.
  • 00:25:00.814 --> 00:25:04.552
  • Our challenge isn't the depravity of the wicked, it's
  • 00:25:04.552 --> 00:25:06.754
  • The condition of our heart.
  • 00:25:06.754 --> 00:25:08.088
  • Let's pray.
  • 00:25:08.088 --> 00:25:09.456
  • Father, forgive us.
  • 00:25:09.456 --> 00:25:10.791
  • Forgive us for having been co-opted by the world, by having
  • 00:25:10.791 --> 00:25:13.561
  • Our dreams and goals and aspirations be defined apart
  • 00:25:13.561 --> 00:25:16.897
  • From you.
  • 00:25:16.897 --> 00:25:18.265
  • Give us a love for your word and a love for your truth that will
  • 00:25:18.265 --> 00:25:21.201
  • Write a new future for us.
  • 00:25:21.201 --> 00:25:22.570
  • In jesus's name, amen. god bless you.
  • 00:25:22.570 --> 00:25:26.607
  • Allen: this is the 250th anniversary of our nation.
  • 00:25:30.678 --> 00:25:33.447
  • It's a big deal.
  • 00:25:33.447 --> 00:25:34.782
  • Now, i know a lot of us don't care a whole lot about history.
  • 00:25:34.782 --> 00:25:37.418
  • We didn't have great experiences in school.
  • 00:25:37.418 --> 00:25:39.186
  • I understand that, but here's the reality.
  • 00:25:39.186 --> 00:25:41.622
  • If they can steal our history, they'll rob us of our future.
  • 00:25:41.622 --> 00:25:44.825
  • So history really does matter.
  • 00:25:44.825 --> 00:25:46.827
  • Well, because of that, we have partnered with some good friends
  • 00:25:46.827 --> 00:25:49.229
  • Of our ministries, wallbuilders david and tim barton.
  • 00:25:49.229 --> 00:25:52.633
  • They have the best of the best on this topic.
  • 00:25:52.633 --> 00:25:54.702
  • It's a two-volume set on "the american story," and it helps us
  • 00:25:54.702 --> 00:25:58.272
  • Learn american history with a faith component, with a god
  • 00:25:58.272 --> 00:26:01.842
  • Perspective--how god has been engaged in the unfolding
  • 00:26:01.842 --> 00:26:04.912
  • Narrative of our american story.
  • 00:26:04.912 --> 00:26:07.548
  • That matters because we need god to be involved in the future of
  • 00:26:07.548 --> 00:26:10.751
  • The american story.
  • 00:26:10.751 --> 00:26:12.119
  • That affects our lives, our families, our communities, and
  • 00:26:12.119 --> 00:26:14.888
  • Ultimately our nation.
  • 00:26:14.888 --> 00:26:16.557
  • The books will be a blessing to you, but more than that, i
  • 00:26:16.557 --> 00:26:18.993
  • Believe they'll open your life to the imagination that god is
  • 00:26:18.993 --> 00:26:21.495
  • Moving in the earth, and we can participate with him in the next
  • 00:26:21.495 --> 00:26:24.798
  • Chapters of american history.
