- 00:04:33.955 --> 00:04:36.258

- 00:04:38.827 --> 00:04:43.065

- 00:04:43.065 --> 00:04:45.534
- Buildings and monuments were just piles of rubble.
- 00:04:45.534 --> 00:04:49.071
- You would understand something horrific had happened, that the
- 00:04:49.071 --> 00:04:52.541
- Power and the authority of our nation had somehow shifted, and
- 00:04:52.541 --> 00:04:57.379
- That's what the temple represented to the people.
- 00:04:57.379 --> 00:05:00.482
- And it's not insignificant that the last days and weeks of
- 00:05:00.482 --> 00:05:03.085
- Jesus's ministry was centered almost exclusively in that
- 00:05:03.085 --> 00:05:06.355
- Temple in jerusalem.
- 00:05:06.355 --> 00:05:08.390
- He began his public ministry in galilee, in the remote rural
- 00:05:08.390 --> 00:05:11.893
- Parts of the nation, ministering in the synagogues.
- 00:05:11.893 --> 00:05:15.163
- They were small, they would hold dozens of people.
- 00:05:15.163 --> 00:05:18.767
- But the conclusion of his ministry, the real conflict of
- 00:05:18.767 --> 00:05:21.403
- His ministry, takes place in jerusalem.
- 00:05:21.403 --> 00:05:23.705
- So luke is telling us a story.
- 00:05:23.705 --> 00:05:25.474
- It's a narrative with an objective.
- 00:05:25.474 --> 00:05:28.410
- Now, our familiarity with the gospels is principally in the
- 00:05:28.410 --> 00:05:30.912
- Jesus story, the circumstances of his birth, the uniqueness of
- 00:05:30.912 --> 00:05:34.616
- That virgin birth.
- 00:05:34.616 --> 00:05:35.951
- Luke gives us a very clear window into that.
- 00:05:35.951 --> 00:05:37.919
- The visit from the angel gabriel to a teenager in nazareth, and
- 00:05:37.919 --> 00:05:41.890
- We follow jesus through and there's some miracle stories and
- 00:05:41.890 --> 00:05:45.861
- There's some healings and we're kind of familiar with those and
- 00:05:45.861 --> 00:05:48.797
- Then we get to the conclusion, the music builds, it's
- 00:05:48.797 --> 00:05:51.900
- The crescendo.
- 00:05:51.900 --> 00:05:53.235

- 00:05:53.235 --> 00:05:57.739
- Life again.
- 00:05:57.739 --> 00:05:59.307
- It's the redemptive story of jesus.
- 00:05:59.307 --> 00:06:03.111
- I believe it, but it's not the only story in the gospel
- 00:06:03.111 --> 00:06:07.215
- Of luke.
- 00:06:07.215 --> 00:06:09.117
- And i think, unless you have a bit more time and you read with
- 00:06:09.117 --> 00:06:12.821
- A bit more intentionality, it's very easy to read past that.
- 00:06:12.821 --> 00:06:17.392
- Luke's gospel certainly presents a narrative about
- 00:06:17.392 --> 00:06:20.095
- Jesus's arrival and his redemptive work, but it also
- 00:06:20.095 --> 00:06:22.597
- Reflects an opportunity for the people that jesus
- 00:06:22.597 --> 00:06:25.267
- Walked amongst.
- 00:06:25.267 --> 00:06:27.669
- The messiah was there.
- 00:06:27.669 --> 00:06:31.206
- Luke tells us a timeless story and an account of what happens
- 00:06:31.206 --> 00:06:34.609
- When we ignore god's truth.
- 00:06:34.609 --> 00:06:36.344
- We need both lessons.
- 00:06:36.344 --> 00:06:39.281
- The people to whom jesus spoke, the people to whom he
- 00:06:39.281 --> 00:06:42.751
- Ministered, the synagogues he entered, the people that
- 00:06:42.751 --> 00:06:46.455
- Listened to him on the temple mount had a choice, and because
- 00:06:46.455 --> 00:06:52.160
- Of their choices, their lives took a dramatic turn.
- 00:06:52.160 --> 00:07:00.469

- 00:07:00.469 --> 00:07:02.604

- I'm not going to bring you those passages now, perhaps in the

- Our past.
- 00:08:26.721 --> 00:08:28.623

- 00:08:28.623 --> 00:08:30.926
- It isn't clear to me.
- 00:08:30.926 --> 00:08:33.328

- 00:08:37.899 --> 00:08:40.669
- Hearts and our choices than any other factor.
- 00:08:40.669 --> 00:08:45.206
- I'm convinced of that.
- 00:08:45.206 --> 00:08:48.043
- If you'll tolerate with me just a brief historical review--i
- 00:08:48.043 --> 00:08:51.179
- Think it'll help with the gospel of luke.
- 00:08:51.179 --> 00:08:53.014
- For more than a thousand years, the jewish people lived in the
- 00:08:53.014 --> 00:08:55.951
- Land god promised abraham with jerusalem as their capital city,
- 00:08:55.951 --> 00:09:00.388
- For more than one thousand years.
- 00:09:00.388 --> 00:09:05.961
- There was one brief interlude, about 70 years.
- 00:09:05.961 --> 00:09:09.698
- God sent them away.
- 00:09:09.698 --> 00:09:12.233
- It's a babel and you know the portions of your bible that come
- 00:09:12.233 --> 00:09:14.436

- 00:19:25.112 --> 00:19:27.448
- And his mother said to him, 'son, why have you treated us
- 00:19:27.448 --> 00:19:30.151
- Like this?
- 00:19:30.151 --> 00:19:32.019

- 00:19:32.019 --> 00:19:36.857

- 00:19:36.857 --> 00:19:39.794
- "it's better that i found you than your dad did."
- 00:19:39.794 --> 00:19:45.933
- And jesus answered, "'why were you searching for me?'"
- 00:19:45.933 --> 00:19:49.737
- And we've all been coached, almost ad nauseam, that jesus is
- 00:19:49.737 --> 00:19:53.040
- Always kind,
- 00:19:53.040 --> 00:19:55.576
- That everything he had to say was just like about a group hug
- 00:19:55.576 --> 00:19:58.246
- And a handshake.
- 00:19:58.246 --> 00:20:00.081
- He handed out candy and everybody was happy.
- 00:20:00.081 --> 00:20:02.617
- But even at 12 years old, his answer to his mom--they left to
- 00:20:02.617 --> 00:20:08.689
- Go home and he didn't go with them intentionally.
- 00:20:08.689 --> 00:20:12.793

- 00:20:12.793 --> 00:20:18.966

- 00:20:21.602 --> 00:20:23.571
- So after several days of anxiety and disrupted plans and
- 00:20:23.571 --> 00:20:27.141
- Searching for him, mary finds jesus and he said, "'well,
- 00:20:27.141 --> 00:20:31.245
- Didn't you know i had to be here?'"
- 00:20:31.245 --> 00:20:35.116

- 00:20:48.696 --> 00:20:51.332

- Public ministry.
- 00:20:53.868 --> 00:20:55.236
- I mean, it isn't gonna take place for almost another 20
- 00:20:55.236 --> 00:20:57.238
- Years, but he's in the temple, talking to the leaders.
- 00:20:57.238 --> 00:21:02.143
- Luke chapter 4, jesus has been baptized and he's ready now to
- 00:21:02.143 --> 00:21:06.147
- Step into the public.
- 00:21:06.147 --> 00:21:07.481
- He's an adult, 30 years of age, and it says in luke 4 in verse
- 00:21:07.481 --> 00:21:10.284
- 9, "the devil led jesus to jerusalem and had him stand on
- 00:21:10.284 --> 00:21:14.188
- The highest point of the temple, and he said, 'if you're the son
- 00:21:14.188 --> 00:21:17.491

- 00:21:17.491 --> 00:21:19.026

- He knew him before the earth was created.
- 00:21:21.696 --> 00:21:25.366
- He knew him in all of his glory and his majesty.
- 00:21:25.366 --> 00:21:27.735
- We know that because the demons know who he is.
- 00:21:27.735 --> 00:21:31.772
- When he steps into the synagogue in capernaum, the demons cries
- 00:21:31.772 --> 00:21:34.875
- Out, "i know who you are."
- 00:21:34.875 --> 00:21:37.878

- 00:21:37.878 --> 00:21:42.083
- He's tempted him.
- 00:21:42.083 --> 00:21:44.485
- The frailty of the human condition makes him vulnerable
- 00:21:44.485 --> 00:21:47.321
- In a way that satan has never known him.
- 00:21:47.321 --> 00:21:49.256
- And he stands him on the pinnacle of the temple, the
- 00:21:49.256 --> 00:21:51.192
- Highest point of the temple, which is quite an elevated
- 00:21:51.192 --> 00:21:53.627
- Place, and said, "'if you're the son of god--'"
- 00:21:53.627 --> 00:21:57.998
- I don't think it's accidental or incidental that satan begins the
- 00:21:57.998 --> 00:22:00.768
- Temptation at the temple and jesus quotes scripture to him.
- 00:22:00.768 --> 00:22:07.441
- In luke 19, jesus is approaching jerusalem.
- 00:22:07.441 --> 00:22:12.313
- It's the last of his trips there.
- 00:22:12.313 --> 00:22:14.648
- This trip is going to end with some horrible things, betrayal
- 00:22:14.648 --> 00:22:19.687
- And arrest and crucifixion.
- 00:22:19.687 --> 00:22:21.789
- Yes, we celebrate the resurrection, but the path
- 00:22:21.789 --> 00:22:24.325
- Between his entry into the city and that resurrection is brutal
- 00:22:24.325 --> 00:22:27.962
- Beyond consideration.
- 00:22:27.962 --> 00:22:30.464
- And as jesus approaches the city--he's approaching from the
- 00:22:30.464 --> 00:22:34.402
- East and you come down the mount of olives and there's the kidron
- 00:22:34.402 --> 00:22:37.004
- Valley and then before you, the city of jerusalem.
- 00:22:37.004 --> 00:22:39.306
- Because, although it's built on a hill, the mount of olives
- 00:22:39.306 --> 00:22:41.375
- Is taller.
- 00:22:41.375 --> 00:22:42.710
- So as you crest the mount of olives, the whole city spreads
- 00:22:42.710 --> 00:22:45.012
- Before you and immediately in front of you is the temple,
- 00:22:45.012 --> 00:22:48.182
- Herod's temple, the second temple.
- 00:22:48.182 --> 00:22:51.685
- It's this amazing, beautiful structure, one of the wonders of
- 00:22:51.685 --> 00:22:54.388
- The ancient world.
- 00:22:54.388 --> 00:22:55.756
- And as jesus comes into jerusalem, luke writes for us
- 00:22:55.756 --> 00:22:58.159
- That, "as he approached jerusalem and saw the city,
- 00:22:58.159 --> 00:23:00.027
- He wept."
- 00:23:00.027 --> 00:23:02.596
- It's a triumphal entry.
- 00:23:02.596 --> 00:23:03.931
- The children are saying, "hosanna to the king!"
- 00:23:03.931 --> 00:23:08.302
- But jesus's emotions are very different.
- 00:23:08.302 --> 00:23:10.571
- He's not basking in the celebratory attitude of
- 00:23:10.571 --> 00:23:14.041
- His arrival.
- 00:23:14.041 --> 00:23:17.545
- And then jesus as prophet said, "'if you'd only known on this
- 00:23:17.545 --> 00:23:20.314
- Day what would bring you peace- but now it's hidden from
- 00:23:20.314 --> 00:23:23.117
- Your eyes.
- 00:23:23.117 --> 00:23:24.718
- The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an
- 00:23:24.718 --> 00:23:26.854
- Embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on
- 00:23:26.854 --> 00:23:29.223
- Every side.'"
- 00:23:29.223 --> 00:23:30.558
- He's describing a war, a siege built against jerusalem.
- 00:23:30.558 --> 00:23:33.894
- If you stand on that same mount of olives today against the the
- 00:23:33.894 --> 00:23:37.298
- Wall of herod's temple mount, it's still there, it's the dirt
- 00:23:37.298 --> 00:23:41.502
- That was piled up as a part of that romans's siege ramp.
- 00:23:41.502 --> 00:23:43.904
- What jesus said in luke 19 you can see with your eyes on the
- 00:23:43.904 --> 00:23:47.408
- Mount of olives today.
- 00:23:47.408 --> 00:23:51.479
- "'they'll dash you to the ground, you and the children
- 00:23:51.479 --> 00:23:53.581

- 00:23:53.581 --> 00:23:55.149

- Recognize the time of god's coming to you.'"
- 00:23:57.485 --> 00:23:59.954
- For people that say jesus wasn't political, that he didn't engage
- 00:23:59.954 --> 00:24:03.657
- Current events, you need to listen to what he's saying.
- 00:24:03.657 --> 00:24:08.162

- 00:24:08.162 --> 00:24:12.700
