  • 00:09:29.492 --> 00:09:34.664
  • My friend, bill spears, who is a member of our church,
  • 00:09:34.664 --> 00:09:37.767
  • Has a great saying, i repeat it all the time.
  • 00:09:37.767 --> 00:09:40.503
  • "success without succession is failure."
  • 00:09:40.503 --> 00:09:45.875
  • A wise ceo is one who realizes his time in the seat is limited,
  • 00:09:45.875 --> 00:09:50.346
  • He better prepare for somebody who's going to succeed him.
  • 00:09:50.346 --> 00:09:54.050
  • And that's true for us who are christians.
  • 00:09:54.050 --> 00:09:56.686
  • You know, dr. crystal used to say all the time, i remember him
  • 00:09:56.686 --> 00:09:59.455
  • Saying this all the time, "every civilization is only one
  • 00:09:59.455 --> 00:10:04.460
  • Generation away from paganism."
  • 00:10:04.460 --> 00:10:07.663
  • Every civilization only one generation away from paganism.
  • 00:10:07.663 --> 00:10:11.267
  • If we fail to pass on the christian truth to the next
  • 00:10:11.267 --> 00:10:14.470
  • Generation, we become a pagan people.
  • 00:10:14.470 --> 00:10:18.574
  • And that's what discipleship is.
  • 00:10:18.574 --> 00:10:20.009
  • It is investing our lives and instilling god's word
  • 00:10:20.009 --> 00:10:23.979
  • In the lives of other people.
  • 00:10:23.979 --> 00:10:25.314
  • Of course, for those of us who are parents, our most important
  • 00:10:25.314 --> 00:10:28.050
  • Discipleship project is our own children.
  • 00:10:28.050 --> 00:10:31.520
  • To teach our children to follow god and to imitate christ,
  • 00:10:31.520 --> 00:10:35.758
  • But our children aren't our only discipleship project.
  • 00:10:35.758 --> 00:10:39.862
  • We need to be entrusting our faith to other men and women
  • 00:10:39.862 --> 00:10:43.232
  • Who will carry on the faith.
  • 00:10:43.232 --> 00:10:45.367
  • Jesus knew his time was limited, he didn't have any natural
  • 00:10:45.367 --> 00:10:48.537
  • Children, but he decided to pass along his faith to 12 men who
  • 00:10:48.537 --> 00:10:53.809
  • Would be entrusted with the christian faith to spread it
  • 00:10:53.809 --> 00:10:57.980
  • Throughout the world.
  • 00:10:57.980 --> 00:10:59.682
  • And so he needed guidance from his heavenly father,
  • 00:10:59.682 --> 00:11:02.685
  • "which 12 men should i choose?"
  • 00:11:02.685 --> 00:11:05.855
  • And so he goes and has an all-night prayer meeting
  • 00:11:05.855 --> 00:11:09.058
  • For god's wisdom in making the right choice.
  • 00:11:09.058 --> 00:11:12.695
  • Now, i could get real sanctimonious here if i wanted
  • 00:11:12.695 --> 00:11:15.131
  • To, and i could say, what is it you're so concerned about that
  • 00:11:15.131 --> 00:11:19.602
  • You've ever stayed up all night and prayed about?
  • 00:11:19.602 --> 00:11:22.738
  • I could do that if i wanted to, but i'd be a hypocrite.
  • 00:11:22.738 --> 00:11:25.741
  • Because the fact is, i have never purposefully stayed up
  • 00:11:25.741 --> 00:11:30.546
  • All night to pray about something.
  • 00:11:30.546 --> 00:11:34.083
  • Now, i have had times when i couldn't go to sleep at night,
  • 00:11:34.083 --> 00:11:37.553
  • And when i was so concerned about something that i would
  • 00:11:37.553 --> 00:11:39.855
  • Pray and then i would drift off to sleep for a little bit, and
  • 00:11:39.855 --> 00:11:42.424
  • Then i would wake up and start praying about it again
  • 00:11:42.424 --> 00:11:44.460
  • And drift off to sleep.
  • 00:11:44.460 --> 00:11:45.961
  • Many of us have had that experience, but honestly,
  • 00:11:45.961 --> 00:11:48.430
  • I've not stayed up all night purposefully to pray.
  • 00:11:48.430 --> 00:11:51.901
  • So i'm not gonna ask you that question.
  • 00:11:51.901 --> 00:11:53.702
  • Here's the question i am going to ask you.
  • 00:11:53.702 --> 00:11:56.472
  • What are you so concerned about in your life right now that you
  • 00:11:56.472 --> 00:12:00.943
  • Would devote just five minutes a day to pray for?
  • 00:12:00.943 --> 00:12:07.249
  • Is there anything in your life, your children, your work,
  • 00:12:07.249 --> 00:12:14.356
  • The health concern of a friend or yourself, anything that
  • 00:12:14.356 --> 00:12:18.394
  • You're willing to spend five uninterrupted minutes
  • 00:12:18.394 --> 00:12:21.630
  • A day praying for?
  • 00:12:21.630 --> 00:12:23.666
  • Jesus knew how important prayer was, and so he prayed all night
  • 00:12:23.666 --> 00:12:28.771
  • And the result, verse 13, "and when day came, he called his
  • 00:12:28.771 --> 00:12:33.042
  • Disciples to him and he chose twelve of them, whom he also
  • 00:12:33.042 --> 00:12:38.414
  • Named as apostles."
  • 00:12:38.414 --> 00:12:41.217
  • Now lemme say a word.
  • 00:12:41.217 --> 00:12:42.685
  • You might wanna write this down about the difference between
  • 00:12:42.685 --> 00:12:44.587
  • A disciple and an apostle.
  • 00:12:44.587 --> 00:12:47.356
  • A disciple is a follower of a rabbi.
  • 00:12:47.356 --> 00:12:51.327
  • A disciple is somebody who is so enthralled with a rabbi that
  • 00:12:51.327 --> 00:12:55.297
  • He seeks to imitate not just his words, but his example.
  • 00:12:55.297 --> 00:12:59.134
  • To be a disciple of jesus means to model your attitudes,
  • 00:12:59.134 --> 00:13:03.706
  • Actions, and affections after jesus.
  • 00:13:03.706 --> 00:13:07.142
  • It means to love what jesus loved, act like jesus acted,
  • 00:13:07.142 --> 00:13:10.846
  • Think like jesus thought in every situation.
  • 00:13:10.846 --> 00:13:14.984
  • The simple definition i gave you a few months ago of a disciple
  • 00:13:14.984 --> 00:13:17.987
  • Is this; to be a disciple means for me to live my life as jesus
  • 00:13:17.987 --> 00:13:25.027
  • Would live my life if he were i, how would jesus operate
  • 00:13:25.027 --> 00:13:28.797
  • If he had your job?
  • 00:13:28.797 --> 00:13:32.368
  • How would jesus relate to your family members?
  • 00:13:32.368 --> 00:13:35.471
  • How would jesus relate to your friends?
  • 00:13:35.471 --> 00:13:38.140
  • How would jesus handle the amount of money he's entrusted
  • 00:13:38.140 --> 00:13:40.342
  • To you?
  • 00:13:40.342 --> 00:13:41.777
  • That's what it means to be a disciple.
  • 00:13:41.777 --> 00:13:44.313
  • But out of the disciples came 12 apostles, these are the ones who
  • 00:13:44.313 --> 00:13:49.852
  • Would be sent forth a unique group to proclaim the message
  • 00:13:49.852 --> 00:13:53.555
  • Of jesus to the jews and the gentiles.
  • 00:13:53.555 --> 00:13:57.293
  • Now, i could spend sermon after sermon talking about these
  • 00:13:57.293 --> 00:14:00.663
  • Apostles, i'm not going to do that.
  • 00:14:00.663 --> 00:14:02.865
  • Let me just give you three observation about the list you
  • 00:14:02.865 --> 00:14:07.236
  • Find in verses 12 to 14, and you find the similar list
  • 00:14:07.236 --> 00:14:10.906
  • In matthew and mark.
  • 00:14:10.906 --> 00:14:12.875
  • Number one, the lists begin with simon peter.
  • 00:14:12.875 --> 00:14:16.912
  • All three lists of the apostles begin with peter.
  • 00:14:16.912 --> 00:14:19.682
  • He was the leader, but you know what?
  • 00:14:19.682 --> 00:14:22.217
  • What's interesting?
  • 00:14:22.217 --> 00:14:23.552
  • He was the greatest failure of all of the apostles.
  • 00:14:23.552 --> 00:14:25.988
  • Here's a guy who denied jesus, not once or twice,
  • 00:14:25.988 --> 00:14:28.590
  • But three different times.
  • 00:14:28.590 --> 00:14:30.826
  • He was a major screw up as an apostle, and yet jesus chose him
  • 00:14:30.826 --> 00:14:36.799
  • To be the leader.
  • 00:14:36.799 --> 00:14:38.300
  • Doesn't that give you hope?
  • 00:14:38.300 --> 00:14:39.868
  • It doesn't matter how much you failed, what is in your past?
  • 00:14:39.868 --> 00:14:43.138
  • God can take your mistakes, forgive them, and redeem them.
  • 00:14:43.138 --> 00:14:47.509
  • Peter is at the beginning of every list.
  • 00:14:47.509 --> 00:14:50.079
  • Secondly, the list ends with judas iscariot.
  • 00:14:50.079 --> 00:14:54.650
  • You know, iscariot e--is comes from the hebrew word ishman,
  • 00:14:54.650 --> 00:15:00.522
  • Cariot is probably a derivation of kerioth, the town of judea.
  • 00:15:00.522 --> 00:15:04.760
  • Judas, the man of kerioth.
  • 00:15:04.760 --> 00:15:07.730
  • We all know about judas, he's the one who betrayed jesus
  • 00:15:07.730 --> 00:15:11.533
  • For 30 pieces of silver and led to his crucifixion.
  • 00:15:11.533 --> 00:15:15.004
  • Now at first reading, we have to think, well,
  • 00:15:15.004 --> 00:15:16.705
  • Why did jesus choose judas?
  • 00:15:16.705 --> 00:15:19.742
  • Did he make a mistake?
  • 00:15:19.742 --> 00:15:21.777
  • Maybe jesus should have spent even longer praying about this
  • 00:15:21.777 --> 00:15:24.013
  • Selection so he didn't make a mistake like judas.
  • 00:15:24.013 --> 00:15:27.950
  • No, all of this was a part of god's plan.
  • 00:15:27.950 --> 00:15:32.021
  • Jesus chose judas for a reason because jesus knew god could use
  • 00:15:32.021 --> 00:15:36.392
  • The evil in judas's own heart to accomplish his purpose.
  • 00:15:36.392 --> 00:15:40.596
  • I'm gonna say more about that in a moment.
  • 00:15:40.596 --> 00:15:42.498
  • But god can take evil people, he can take evil circumstances that
  • 00:15:42.498 --> 00:15:47.503
  • Are used against you, and he can still use those for your good
  • 00:15:47.503 --> 00:15:51.273
  • And his eternal purpose.
  • 00:15:51.273 --> 00:15:53.742
  • The final thing i noticed about this list is they are comprised
  • 00:15:53.742 --> 00:15:57.012
  • Of young men.
  • 00:15:57.012 --> 00:15:58.680
  • You know, when we think about the apostles, we think about
  • 00:15:58.680 --> 00:16:00.549
  • These, you know, old white guys with beards, you know,
  • 00:16:00.549 --> 00:16:04.053
  • And think the 60, 70-year-olds, no.
  • 00:16:04.053 --> 00:16:07.689
  • Most bible scholars believe these men were probably in their
  • 00:16:07.689 --> 00:16:10.359
  • Late teenage years, early 20s at the most when
  • 00:16:10.359 --> 00:16:13.762
  • They were chosen to be apostles.
  • 00:16:13.762 --> 00:16:17.299
  • Now, having said all of that, let's look at verse 17,
  • 00:16:17.299 --> 00:16:20.235
  • Or verse 17 tells us that when jesus descended to a plane,
  • 00:16:20.235 --> 00:16:25.240
  • There was a great multitude of his followers there.
  • 00:16:25.240 --> 00:16:28.143
  • And verse 20 says, "turning his gaze on his disciples."
  • 00:16:28.143 --> 00:16:33.916
  • What i want you to notice is this message we're gonna look at
  • 00:16:33.916 --> 00:16:36.318
  • For just a few moments is not a message for the unsaved.
  • 00:16:36.318 --> 00:16:40.823
  • There's nothing in this passage that will tell you how to go to
  • 00:16:40.823 --> 00:16:43.158
  • Heaven when you die.
  • 00:16:43.158 --> 00:16:44.693
  • There's nothing about god's forgiveness through jesus or the
  • 00:16:44.693 --> 00:16:47.329
  • Cross or the blood of christ, this was a message for his
  • 00:16:47.329 --> 00:16:50.933
  • Disciples, his followers.
  • 00:16:50.933 --> 00:16:54.603
  • You know, it's interesting, jesus was in the midst of
  • 00:16:54.603 --> 00:16:56.872
  • Relentless criticism from the pharisees, but jesus did not
  • 00:16:56.872 --> 00:17:01.110
  • Spend his time answering the criticism of the pharisees.
  • 00:17:01.110 --> 00:17:05.514
  • In fact, in this passage, jesus doesn't try to answer the
  • 00:17:05.514 --> 00:17:08.350
  • Pharisees, instead, he invest his time with his disciples,
  • 00:17:08.350 --> 00:17:14.056
  • His followers.
  • 00:17:14.056 --> 00:17:15.390
  • And here's a great leadership principle that won't cost you
  • 00:17:15.390 --> 00:17:17.659
  • Anything extra, but i want you to write it down.
  • 00:17:17.659 --> 00:17:20.796
  • Here's a mark of a true leader.
  • 00:17:20.796 --> 00:17:22.965
  • A true leader in--doesn't invest his time with problem people,
  • 00:17:22.965 --> 00:17:29.338
  • He invests his time with people with potential.
  • 00:17:29.338 --> 00:17:33.108
  • Lemme say it again.
  • 00:17:33.108 --> 00:17:34.643
  • A real effective leader invests his time not with people with
  • 00:17:34.643 --> 00:17:38.480
  • Problems, but people with potential.
  • 00:17:38.480 --> 00:17:42.417
  • He doesn't invest his time with people who are causing trouble
  • 00:17:42.417 --> 00:17:45.454
  • And are upset all the time, he invests his time with the people
  • 00:17:45.454 --> 00:17:48.757
  • Who have potential.
  • 00:17:48.757 --> 00:17:50.692
  • You see that over and over again.
  • 00:17:50.692 --> 00:17:52.127
  • The mistake of focusing your attention on people who just
  • 00:17:52.127 --> 00:17:56.198
  • Have problems.
  • 00:17:56.198 --> 00:17:57.933
  • You know, we see this in families.
  • 00:17:57.933 --> 00:17:59.535
  • There's a problem child in the family, the parent devotes
  • 00:17:59.535 --> 00:18:02.738
  • All the attention and emotional issue to this child with the
  • 00:18:02.738 --> 00:18:05.841
  • Problems and neglects the rest of the children in the family
  • 00:18:05.841 --> 00:18:08.877
  • Who have great potential.
  • 00:18:08.877 --> 00:18:10.879
  • Or you see this in businesses.
  • 00:18:10.879 --> 00:18:12.447
  • A business is all hung up on this one or two problem
  • 00:18:12.447 --> 00:18:16.285
  • Disgruntled customer they have, and they forget all of the
  • 00:18:16.285 --> 00:18:20.289
  • Potential customers they could be devoting
  • 00:18:20.289 --> 00:18:22.391
  • Their resources toward.
  • 00:18:22.391 --> 00:18:24.326
  • You see this in a church, i see this time and time again
  • 00:18:24.326 --> 00:18:27.329
  • In churches.
  • 00:18:27.329 --> 00:18:28.730
  • A church has a little handful of disgruntled members and the
  • 00:18:28.730 --> 00:18:31.867
  • Leaders of the church are focused on
  • 00:18:31.867 --> 00:18:33.769
  • These disgruntled members.
  • 00:18:33.769 --> 00:18:35.270
  • "oh, what did we do to offend you?
  • 00:18:35.270 --> 00:18:37.172
  • Or what could we do to make you happy?"
  • 00:18:37.172 --> 00:18:39.274
  • And the pastor stands up and he focuses on that little group,
  • 00:18:39.274 --> 00:18:42.544
  • And he's just lambasting them week after week after week
  • 00:18:42.544 --> 00:18:45.781
  • Forgetting that 99% of the people in the church are happy
  • 00:18:45.781 --> 00:18:48.817
  • With the church, they're excited about what's going on,
  • 00:18:48.817 --> 00:18:51.653
  • But he focuses on the few with problems.
  • 00:18:51.653 --> 00:18:54.556
  • Again, a real leader is somebody who doesn't focus his attention
  • 00:18:54.556 --> 00:18:59.094
  • On people who are causing problems, but people with
  • 00:18:59.094 --> 00:19:02.231
  • Potential, and that's what jesus did.
  • 00:19:02.231 --> 00:19:04.132
  • He focused this message on the ones who would carry on
  • 00:19:04.132 --> 00:19:07.102
  • His faith long after he had ascended back into heaven.
  • 00:19:07.102 --> 00:19:11.173
  • And that brings us to the substance of the sermon
  • 00:19:11.173 --> 00:19:14.276
  • Beginning in verse 20.
  • 00:19:14.276 --> 00:19:17.012
  • Let me remind you, this is just a summary of the sermon
  • 00:19:17.012 --> 00:19:20.449
  • On the mount.
  • 00:19:20.449 --> 00:19:21.817
  • You find a longer version in verse--in matthew 5 through 7.
  • 00:19:21.817 --> 00:19:25.954
  • This is a short version of it.
  • 00:19:25.954 --> 00:19:27.923
  • Some people get hung up on that.
  • 00:19:27.923 --> 00:19:29.491
  • "wait a minute, pastor, why are the accounts different?"
  • 00:19:29.491 --> 00:19:32.928
  • It's just a summary.
  • 00:19:32.928 --> 00:19:35.264
  • You know, in the english language we have quotation
  • 00:19:35.264 --> 00:19:37.699
  • Marks, and in your text it probably shows quotation marks.
  • 00:19:37.699 --> 00:19:41.937
  • In the english language, quotation marks means this is a
  • 00:19:41.937 --> 00:19:45.540
  • Word for word, exact quotation of what somebody said.
  • 00:19:45.540 --> 00:19:49.578
  • In the greek language, there were no quotation marks.
  • 00:19:49.578 --> 00:19:53.015
  • This is an indirect paraphrase of what jesus said, and that's
  • 00:19:53.015 --> 00:19:57.319
  • Why luke emphasizes some things that matthew doesn't.
  • 00:19:57.319 --> 00:20:01.490
  • Matthew emphasizes something that jesus doesn't.
  • 00:20:01.490 --> 00:20:04.026
  • So don't get hung up on that.
  • 00:20:04.026 --> 00:20:05.894
  • This is a paraphrase of what jesus said.
  • 00:20:05.894 --> 00:20:08.964
  • Now, having said that, remember the theme.
  • 00:20:08.964 --> 00:20:11.366
  • When we know what jesus knows, we can be generous,
  • 00:20:11.366 --> 00:20:14.236
  • First of all, in our attitude toward difficult circumstances.
  • 00:20:14.236 --> 00:20:18.173
  • Let's just look at some of these.
  • 00:20:18.173 --> 00:20:19.808
  • Verse 20, "and turning his gaze on his disciples, he began to
  • 00:20:19.808 --> 00:20:23.645
  • Say, 'blessed,'" literally happy, "are you who are poor,
  • 00:20:23.645 --> 00:20:29.184
  • For yours is the kingdom of god."
  • 00:20:29.184 --> 00:20:31.720
  • Now he's not talking about material poverty.
  • 00:20:31.720 --> 00:20:34.489
  • There's nothing blessed about being
  • 00:20:34.489 --> 00:20:36.325
  • Poor financially automatically.
  • 00:20:36.325 --> 00:20:39.528
  • Matthew adds the words, blessed are the poor in spirit.
  • 00:20:39.528 --> 00:20:45.267
  • That is blessed, happy or those of you
  • 00:20:45.267 --> 00:20:47.602
  • Who recognize your spiritual poverty.
  • 00:20:47.602 --> 00:20:50.605
  • I like the way one commentator says it.
  • 00:20:50.605 --> 00:20:52.474
  • "blessed are those who realize they are spiritual zeroes,
  • 00:20:52.474 --> 00:20:57.913
  • For one day yours will be the kingdom of god."
  • 00:20:57.913 --> 00:21:00.382
  • Do you ever feel like a spiritual zero?
  • 00:21:00.382 --> 00:21:02.951
  • You just feel like you're not succeeding
  • 00:21:02.951 --> 00:21:04.486
  • In your christian life?
  • 00:21:04.486 --> 00:21:05.954
  • You know you ought to pray more and read the bible more, but you
  • 00:21:05.954 --> 00:21:08.390
  • Just can't do it, and you don't react like you should and you
  • 00:21:08.390 --> 00:21:11.226
  • Wish you could be better than you are?
  • 00:21:11.226 --> 00:21:13.995
  • He said relax, be happy because one day that struggle you have
  • 00:21:13.995 --> 00:21:19.701
  • In your christian life is gonna be satisfied, yours is going to
  • 00:21:19.701 --> 00:21:23.071
  • Be the kingdom of god.
  • 00:21:23.071 --> 00:21:24.873
  • In verse 21, "blessed," happy, "are you who hunger now,
  • 00:21:24.873 --> 00:21:28.076
  • For you shall be satisfied."
  • 00:21:28.076 --> 00:21:30.912
  • Again, another version says, "blessed are you who hunger and
  • 00:21:30.912 --> 00:21:34.216
  • Thirst for righteousness."
  • 00:21:34.216 --> 00:21:37.152
  • He's talking about a spiritual hunger
  • 00:21:37.152 --> 00:21:38.854
  • And thirst for righteousness.
  • 00:21:38.854 --> 00:21:41.790
  • Do you ever wish we lived in a world where justice reigned?
  • 00:21:41.790 --> 00:21:45.560
  • Do you wish we had a world where there was no dallas
  • 00:21:45.560 --> 00:21:48.964
  • Or baton rouge or terrorist attacks?
  • 00:21:48.964 --> 00:21:52.868
  • Do you wish there was a world in which evil would be overcome
  • 00:21:52.868 --> 00:21:56.705
  • By good every time?
  • 00:21:56.705 --> 00:21:58.940
  • That's what he's talking about.
  • 00:21:58.940 --> 00:22:00.342
  • "blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
  • 00:22:00.342 --> 00:22:04.112
  • For one day you will be satisfied."
  • 00:22:04.112 --> 00:22:07.949
  • One day the tables are going to be turned and god is going to
  • 00:22:07.949 --> 00:22:10.652
  • Right the wrongs of this world.
  • 00:22:10.652 --> 00:22:13.155
  • He goes on to say, "blessed" happy, "are those of you who
  • 00:22:13.155 --> 00:22:15.757
  • Weep now, for you shall laugh."
  • 00:22:15.757 --> 00:22:21.029
  • There's nothing more painful than losing a loved one.
  • 00:22:21.029 --> 00:22:25.333
  • Losing a loved one through death is painful.
  • 00:22:25.333 --> 00:22:28.370
  • I've come to believe even more painful is losing a loved one
  • 00:22:28.370 --> 00:22:32.274
  • Through defection, their heart turns cold towards you.
  • 00:22:32.274 --> 00:22:37.045
  • They desert you, they leave you.
  • 00:22:37.045 --> 00:22:39.448
  • Many of you have suffered a loss of a loved one either
  • 00:22:39.448 --> 00:22:42.317
  • Through death or defection.
  • 00:22:42.317 --> 00:22:44.119
  • He said, "blessed are those of you who weep right now for one
  • 00:22:44.119 --> 00:22:47.355
  • Day, eventually you will laugh."
  • 00:22:47.355 --> 00:22:50.292
  • Remember, when you know what jesus knows about the future,
  • 00:22:50.292 --> 00:22:54.896
  • You can be generous even about loss.
  • 00:22:54.896 --> 00:22:57.466
  • Verse 22, "happy are you when men hate you, and ostracize you,
  • 00:22:57.466 --> 00:23:01.169
  • And cast insults at you and scorn your name as evil,
  • 00:23:01.169 --> 00:23:05.907
  • For the sake of the son of man," verse 23,
  • 00:23:05.907 --> 00:23:07.576
  • "for great is your reward in heaven."
  • 00:23:07.576 --> 00:23:11.947
  • Students, teenagers, do you ever feel like you're ostracized from
  • 00:23:11.947 --> 00:23:15.083
  • The rest of the group because you wanna live for god?
  • 00:23:15.083 --> 00:23:18.954
  • Do you ever feel like in your business you've been passed over
  • 00:23:18.954 --> 00:23:20.989
  • For a promotion because you won't bend
  • 00:23:20.989 --> 00:23:22.657
  • Your christian principles?
  • 00:23:22.657 --> 00:23:25.227
  • Do you ever feel like there's a division in your family between
  • 00:23:25.227 --> 00:23:28.330
  • You and your mate or you and your children or you
  • 00:23:28.330 --> 00:23:31.132
  • And your parents because of your christian faith?
  • 00:23:31.132 --> 00:23:34.803
  • That's all part of the price for living for christ.
  • 00:23:34.803 --> 00:23:42.611
  • Jeffress: at first, these words from jesus may sound like
  • 00:23:42.611 --> 00:23:45.180
  • A paradox, but those who suffer here on earth will be blessed
  • 00:23:45.180 --> 00:23:49.584
  • Eternally in heaven.
  • 00:23:49.584 --> 00:23:51.520
  • Now, before we close today, i wanna tell you about
  • 00:23:51.520 --> 00:23:54.523
  • The incredible "matching challenge" in the amount
  • 00:23:54.523 --> 00:23:57.158
  • Of $1.5 million.
  • 00:23:57.158 --> 00:24:00.061
  • The theme is light the darkness, and when you give a special
  • 00:24:00.061 --> 00:24:04.299
  • Year-end gift today, your generosity will have twice
  • 00:24:04.299 --> 00:24:08.236
  • The impact.
  • 00:24:08.236 --> 00:24:09.671
  • That means your $100 gift will become $200; a $500 gift becomes
  • 00:24:09.671 --> 00:24:15.911
  • $1,000 and so on it goes.
  • 00:24:15.911 --> 00:24:19.247
  • There's no limit to have much you can give between and
  • 00:24:19.247 --> 00:24:22.884
  • December 31 that will be matched.
  • 00:24:22.884 --> 00:24:25.453
  • Every day on television, radio, and digital streaming, "pathway
  • 00:24:25.453 --> 00:24:29.758
  • To victory" brightly shines the light of god's word in an
  • 00:24:29.758 --> 00:24:33.361

  • Grow in their faith too.
  • 00:25:22.043 --> 00:25:23.678
  • Jeffress: of all the ways god could have revealed himself to
  • 00:25:23.745 --> 00:25:26.615
  • Us, he chose to do it through the written word.
  • 00:25:26.615 --> 00:25:30.151
  • And that's why it's so important for you and for me to set aside
  • 00:25:30.151 --> 00:25:33.288

  • Loves you, with inspirational readings based on the parable of

  • The prodigal son.
  • 00:25:54.609 --> 00:25:56.444
  • When the day-to-day problems of life feel overwhelming, take a

  • Hope-filled message of jesus christ as well.

  • Thank you for supporting the ministry of
  • 00:26:16.131 --> 00:26:18.933
  • Pathway to victory.
  • 00:26:18.933 --> 00:26:20.669
  • Jeffress: if you believe this world is all there is, then
  • 00:26:23.238 --> 00:26:26.041
  • Jesus's sermon on the mount makes no sense.
  • 00:26:26.041 --> 00:26:29.411
  • But when you know what jesus knows about the future, you can
  • 00:26:29.411 --> 00:26:33.248
  • Be generous in your attitude toward difficult circumstances.
  • 00:26:33.248 --> 00:26:37.485
  • Well, circumstances aren't the only thing that can be
  • 00:26:37.485 --> 00:26:40.422
  • Difficult, people can test our patience too.
  • 00:26:40.422 --> 00:26:43.758
  • And next time, we'll look at several practical ways for
  • 00:26:43.758 --> 00:26:46.761
  • Dealing with problem people in our lives stemming from our
  • 00:26:46.761 --> 00:26:50.732
  • Study on the sermon on the mount.

  • "pathway to victory."
  • 00:26:55.737 --> 00:26:58.640
  • Jeffress: every one of us here today is building
  • 00:26:58.707 --> 00:27:00.909
  • Some kind of life.
  • 00:27:00.909 --> 00:27:02.911
  • We have a limited amount of time, energy, resources.
  • 00:27:02.911 --> 00:27:07.215
  • You can build a life built around material accumulation,
  • 00:27:07.215 --> 00:27:11.920
  • Or you can build your life around not just hearing
  • 00:27:11.920 --> 00:27:16.624
  • But applying jesus's words.
  • 00:27:16.624 --> 00:27:19.327
  • Announcer: set your dvr and join us next time for part two
  • 00:27:19.394 --> 00:27:22.030
  • Of the message, "the crux of christianity"
  • 00:27:22.030 --> 00:27:24.532
  • Here on "pathway to victory."
  • 00:27:24.532 --> 00:27:27.235
