  • And that is i should seek the highest rate of return
  • 00:09:15.444 --> 00:09:20.016
  • With god's money.
  • 00:09:20.016 --> 00:09:20.983
  • Write that down.
  • 00:09:20.983 --> 00:09:22.251
  • I should seek the highest rate of return
  • 00:09:22.251 --> 00:09:25.821
  • With god's money.
  • 00:09:25.821 --> 00:09:27.890
  • Remember the parable jesus told in matthew 25
  • 00:09:27.890 --> 00:09:31.394
  • To illustrate that?
  • 00:09:31.394 --> 00:09:32.795
  • He talked about a wealthy person
  • 00:09:32.795 --> 00:09:34.964
  • Who was going to leave on a long journey,
  • 00:09:34.964 --> 00:09:36.599
  • So he called three of his slaves in,
  • 00:09:36.599 --> 00:09:38.534
  • And he said, "i'm going to be gone,
  • 00:09:38.534 --> 00:09:40.703
  • "but i'm going to divide my assets with you,
  • 00:09:40.703 --> 00:09:43.205
  • "and i want you to invest it,
  • 00:09:43.205 --> 00:09:44.840
  • "and when i get back, i'll ask for an accounting."
  • 00:09:44.840 --> 00:09:48.044
  • So to the first servant, he gave five talents.
  • 00:09:48.044 --> 00:09:52.181
  • A talent was about 80 pounds of gold.
  • 00:09:52.181 --> 00:09:55.151
  • To the second servant, he gave two talents,
  • 00:09:55.151 --> 00:09:59.755
  • About 160 pounds of gold.
  • 00:10:00.322 --> 00:10:02.591
  • And to the final servant, he just gave a single talent.
  • 00:10:02.591 --> 00:10:07.063
  • He went away.
  • 00:10:07.063 --> 00:10:08.364
  • The bible says, "'after a long time,' jesus said,
  • 00:10:09.365 --> 00:10:13.636
  • "'the master returned.'"
  • 00:10:13.636 --> 00:10:16.205
  • I think, by the way, jesus was giving us a hint there
  • 00:10:16.205 --> 00:10:20.309
  • When he said after a long time,
  • 00:10:20.309 --> 00:10:21.844
  • Longer than the servants were expected, he returned.
  • 00:10:21.844 --> 00:10:24.647
  • I think he was telling us
  • 00:10:24.647 --> 00:10:25.915
  • That he may be away a little bit longer
  • 00:10:25.915 --> 00:10:28.250
  • Than we expect him to be,
  • 00:10:28.250 --> 00:10:30.252
  • But don't miss the point.
  • 00:10:30.252 --> 00:10:31.353
  • He is coming back again.
  • 00:10:31.353 --> 00:10:33.823
  • And the master did come back in jesus' story,
  • 00:10:33.823 --> 00:10:36.492
  • And when he did come back, he asked for an accounting
  • 00:10:36.492 --> 00:10:39.628
  • Of what was done with the money,
  • 00:10:39.628 --> 00:10:41.130
  • And the first servant who had the five talents said
  • 00:10:41.130 --> 00:10:43.999
  • He had invested it, and he had doubled the master's money.
  • 00:10:43.999 --> 00:10:48.104
  • He now had 10 talents.
  • 00:10:48.104 --> 00:10:50.339
  • The master congratulated him.
  • 00:10:50.339 --> 00:10:52.541
  • The one who had been given two talents
  • 00:10:52.541 --> 00:10:54.543
  • Also doubled the investment to four talents.
  • 00:10:54.543 --> 00:10:57.546
  • He received congratulations.
  • 00:10:57.546 --> 00:10:59.815
  • But the third servant, the one who had only one talent,
  • 00:10:59.815 --> 00:11:02.952
  • Said to the master, "you know, i wanted to play it safe.
  • 00:11:02.952 --> 00:11:06.288
  • "i wanted to be sure to preserve your capital,
  • 00:11:06.288 --> 00:11:09.725
  • "so i just went out and buried the talent.
  • 00:11:09.725 --> 00:11:14.029
  • "didn't earn anything,
  • 00:11:14.029 --> 00:11:15.431
  • "but the good news is you didn't lose anything."
  • 00:11:15.431 --> 00:11:19.368
  • Was the master thrilled about that?
  • 00:11:19.368 --> 00:11:21.337
  • Hardly.
  • 00:11:21.337 --> 00:11:23.272
  • He was angry.
  • 00:11:23.272 --> 00:11:24.540
  • In fact, notice what his response was in verse 29
  • 00:11:24.540 --> 00:11:28.244
  • Of matthew 25.
  • 00:11:28.244 --> 00:11:29.779
  • "for to everyone who has more shall be given,
  • 00:11:29.779 --> 00:11:34.316
  • "and he will have an abundance,
  • 00:11:34.316 --> 00:11:36.385
  • "but from the one who does not have,
  • 00:11:36.385 --> 00:11:38.487
  • "even what he does have shall be taken away.
  • 00:11:38.487 --> 00:11:42.992
  • "throw out the worthless slave into the outer darkness.
  • 00:11:42.992 --> 00:11:46.762
  • "in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."
  • 00:11:46.762 --> 00:11:50.699
  • Man, that's a pretty harsh treatment, isn't it,
  • 00:11:50.699 --> 00:11:53.836
  • For some guy who was just trying to be conservative.
  • 00:11:53.836 --> 00:11:57.006
  • But jesus was making an important point.
  • 00:11:57.006 --> 00:12:00.009
  • What we do with the time, with the opportunities,
  • 00:12:00.009 --> 00:12:03.813
  • And yes, with the money that god has entrusted to us,
  • 00:12:03.813 --> 00:12:07.483
  • We are going to give an account of that one day.
  • 00:12:07.483 --> 00:12:10.519
  • And if we understand that, we should understand
  • 00:12:10.519 --> 00:12:13.189
  • That we should seek the very highest rate of return
  • 00:12:13.189 --> 00:12:16.892
  • With the possessions god has entrusted to us.
  • 00:12:16.892 --> 00:12:19.895
  • That's why jesus said in matthew 6:19-20,
  • 00:12:19.895 --> 00:12:23.365
  • "don't store up for yourself treasures on earth
  • 00:12:23.365 --> 00:12:26.202
  • "where moth and rust destroy,
  • 00:12:26.202 --> 00:12:28.337
  • "where thieves break in and steal,
  • 00:12:28.337 --> 00:12:30.639
  • "but instead store up for yourselves treasures in heaven,
  • 00:12:30.639 --> 00:12:35.978
  • "where neither moth nor rust destroys,
  • 00:12:36.812 --> 00:12:38.314
  • "and where thieves do not break in or steal."
  • 00:12:38.314 --> 00:12:41.183
  • Now you may be convinced,
  • 00:12:41.183 --> 00:12:43.319
  • "yes, i want to invest in god's work,
  • 00:12:43.319 --> 00:12:46.889
  • "but how much should i give?"
  • 00:12:46.889 --> 00:12:48.624
  • You may be sincere about that.
  • 00:12:48.624 --> 00:12:50.192
  • Maybe you're just starting out new in the christian life.
  • 00:12:50.192 --> 00:12:52.361
  • "how do i know where to begin?"
  • 00:12:52.361 --> 00:12:54.496
  • After all, some money has to be spent on living expenses,
  • 00:12:54.496 --> 00:12:58.667
  • Some money has to be spent on our kids and grandkids,
  • 00:12:58.667 --> 00:13:01.637
  • Some money ought to be used
  • 00:13:01.637 --> 00:13:02.972
  • To enjoy the life that god's given us.
  • 00:13:02.972 --> 00:13:04.807
  • How do i know how much to give?
  • 00:13:04.807 --> 00:13:07.877
  • The third principle is the tithe is
  • 00:13:07.877 --> 00:13:11.046
  • The starting place of grace giving.
  • 00:13:11.046 --> 00:13:14.717
  • The tithe is the starting place of grace giving.
  • 00:13:14.717 --> 00:13:18.153
  • Years ago, i heard a sermon by dr. bob russell
  • 00:13:18.153 --> 00:13:21.690
  • And he was talking about a group from his church in kentucky
  • 00:13:21.690 --> 00:13:25.027
  • That went to romania on a mission trip,
  • 00:13:25.027 --> 00:13:28.697
  • And this mission group,
  • 00:13:28.697 --> 00:13:30.466
  • Serving with these poor romanian christians,
  • 00:13:30.466 --> 00:13:34.236
  • Were overwhelmed when they found out
  • 00:13:34.236 --> 00:13:36.672
  • That the romanians were very distressed
  • 00:13:36.672 --> 00:13:40.042
  • Because they wanted to give 10%
  • 00:13:40.042 --> 00:13:43.345
  • Of their income to the church,
  • 00:13:43.345 --> 00:13:45.781
  • But the government prevented them from doing so.
  • 00:13:45.781 --> 00:13:47.983
  • The government said, "you can only give 2 1/2%
  • 00:13:47.983 --> 00:13:51.020
  • "to charitable organizations."
  • 00:13:51.020 --> 00:13:53.622
  • And this mission group said the romanian christians were
  • 00:13:53.622 --> 00:13:56.125
  • Constantly looking for loopholes
  • 00:13:56.125 --> 00:13:58.360
  • To get around that limitation,
  • 00:13:58.360 --> 00:14:00.663
  • And then bob russell made this point.
  • 00:14:00.663 --> 00:14:02.831
  • He said, "the romanian christians have less.
  • 00:14:02.831 --> 00:14:05.467
  • "they're looking for a way to give 10%,
  • 00:14:05.467 --> 00:14:08.103
  • "and here we are in america,
  • 00:14:08.103 --> 00:14:09.705
  • "free to give as much as we want to give,
  • 00:14:09.705 --> 00:14:12.541
  • "and we even get a tax deduction for doing so,
  • 00:14:12.541 --> 00:14:15.544
  • "and we're looking for loopholes in the bible not to give."
  • 00:14:15.544 --> 00:14:20.015
  • What an indictment.
  • 00:14:20.015 --> 00:14:22.818
  • When our heart is right,
  • 00:14:23.319 --> 00:14:25.254
  • The question is not how little can i give,
  • 00:14:25.254 --> 00:14:28.490
  • But how much can i give and invest in god's kingdom?
  • 00:14:28.490 --> 00:14:33.228
  • Fourth, how does grace impact our attitude
  • 00:14:34.129 --> 00:14:37.700
  • Toward serving in the church?
  • 00:14:37.700 --> 00:14:40.536
  • Here's what bad grace says.
  • 00:14:40.536 --> 00:14:42.137
  • Bad grace says, "i don't have to do anything in the church."
  • 00:14:42.137 --> 00:14:45.441
  • Good grace says, "god has given me the privilege
  • 00:14:45.441 --> 00:14:48.377
  • "of serving somewhere in the church."
  • 00:14:48.377 --> 00:14:51.280
  • You know, congregations, churches that push this concept
  • 00:14:51.280 --> 00:14:54.917
  • Of bad grace, they'll say things like,
  • 00:14:54.917 --> 00:14:58.687
  • "well, after you've invested
  • 00:14:58.687 --> 00:15:00.756
  • "all the time you can at your job,
  • 00:15:00.756 --> 00:15:03.425
  • "and after you've spent all the time with your family
  • 00:15:03.425 --> 00:15:05.828
  • "you can possibly spend,
  • 00:15:05.828 --> 00:15:07.463
  • "and after you've indulged a hobby or two,
  • 00:15:07.463 --> 00:15:09.865
  • "if you have any time left over,
  • 00:15:09.865 --> 00:15:12.668
  • "maybe you can consider serving someplace in the church,
  • 00:15:12.668 --> 00:15:16.372
  • "but don't feel like you have to.
  • 00:15:16.372 --> 00:15:18.140
  • "you can't serve your way into heaven."
  • 00:15:18.140 --> 00:15:21.577
  • Have you ever heard that before,
  • 00:15:21.577 --> 00:15:22.778
  • People who had that attitude?
  • 00:15:22.778 --> 00:15:25.014
  • And yet, good grace understands
  • 00:15:25.014 --> 00:15:27.082
  • That we have both the responsibility
  • 00:15:27.082 --> 00:15:29.251
  • And the the incredible privilege of serving in the church.
  • 00:15:29.251 --> 00:15:34.523
  • I know some of you are saying,
  • 00:15:35.157 --> 00:15:36.658
  • "robert, aren't you kind of stretching it a little bit
  • 00:15:36.658 --> 00:15:38.627
  • "to try to link serving in the church with god's grace?"
  • 00:15:38.627 --> 00:15:43.565
  • So glad you asked that question.
  • 00:15:43.565 --> 00:15:45.934
  • No, it's not stretching the point at all.
  • 00:15:45.934 --> 00:15:47.836
  • In fact, i want to show you the relationship between grace
  • 00:15:47.836 --> 00:15:52.374
  • And serving in a place of ministry.
  • 00:15:52.374 --> 00:15:55.177
  • Turn over to romans 12, romans 12.
  • 00:15:55.177 --> 00:15:59.548
  • You may remember some years ago i did a three-part series
  • 00:16:00.716 --> 00:16:03.352
  • On how to discover and use your spiritual gift.
  • 00:16:03.352 --> 00:16:06.655
  • You can go to firstdallas.org/volunteer
  • 00:16:06.655 --> 00:16:10.559
  • To listen to that series,
  • 00:16:10.559 --> 00:16:12.661
  • But i'm going to summarize that series
  • 00:16:12.661 --> 00:16:14.797
  • Of three messages into about 10 minutes here,
  • 00:16:14.797 --> 00:16:17.733
  • But for some of you, this is going to be
  • 00:16:17.733 --> 00:16:19.501
  • A life-changing concept.
  • 00:16:19.501 --> 00:16:22.071
  • Number one, write this down.
  • 00:16:22.071 --> 00:16:24.440
  • Every christian has been given a unique spiritual gift.
  • 00:16:24.440 --> 00:16:31.880
  • Look at romans 12:6-8.
  • 00:16:29.144 --> 00:16:34.183
  • "since we have gifts that differ
  • 00:16:34.183 --> 00:16:37.119
  • "according to the grace given to us,
  • 00:16:37.119 --> 00:16:40.289
  • "each of us is to exercise that gift accordingly."
  • 00:16:40.289 --> 00:16:44.226
  • When you trusted in christ as your savior,
  • 00:16:44.226 --> 00:16:46.361
  • You received god's grace in your life.
  • 00:16:46.361 --> 00:16:50.766
  • And when you became a christian, god sent you the gift
  • 00:16:50.766 --> 00:16:54.470
  • Of the holy spirit of god.
  • 00:16:54.470 --> 00:16:57.206
  • But with the holy spirit of god,
  • 00:16:57.206 --> 00:16:59.274
  • He brought into your life a unique spiritual gift
  • 00:16:59.274 --> 00:17:03.245
  • Through which to serve him.
  • 00:17:03.245 --> 00:17:04.913
  • What is a spiritual gift?
  • 00:17:04.913 --> 00:17:06.815
  • Write this down.
  • 00:17:06.815 --> 00:17:08.383
  • A spiritual gift is the unique passion
  • 00:17:08.383 --> 00:17:12.287
  • And power god has given you to further his kingdom.
  • 00:17:12.287 --> 00:17:16.525
  • But it's not only a passion, it's a power.
  • 00:17:16.525 --> 00:17:20.162
  • A spiritual gift is a unique power.
  • 00:17:20.162 --> 00:17:23.699
  • It's something you do that when you do it,
  • 00:17:23.699 --> 00:17:25.934
  • People compliment you on.
  • 00:17:25.934 --> 00:17:27.903
  • It's something you're especially good at.
  • 00:17:27.903 --> 00:17:31.740
  • Truth number two, our gift, our spiritual gift is to be used
  • 00:17:31.740 --> 00:17:36.411
  • In the local church.
  • 00:17:36.411 --> 00:17:38.480
  • Paul's whole discussion of spiritual gifts begins
  • 00:17:38.480 --> 00:17:42.417
  • After he has talked about the body of christ.
  • 00:17:42.417 --> 00:17:45.387
  • Look at romans 12:5.
  • 00:17:45.387 --> 00:17:46.889
  • "so we who are many are one body in christ
  • 00:17:46.889 --> 00:17:50.893
  • "and we are individually members of one another."
  • 00:17:50.893 --> 00:17:53.729
  • Every christian is to be a part
  • 00:17:53.729 --> 00:17:55.531
  • Of a local body of believers,
  • 00:17:55.531 --> 00:17:57.132
