  • 00:09:17.580 --> 00:09:20.850
  • Fine, worship on the sabbath.
  • 00:09:20.850 --> 00:09:22.551
  • If you wanna keep these old testament dietary laws, go ahead
  • 00:09:22.551 --> 00:09:25.988
  • And keep them.
  • 00:09:25.988 --> 00:09:27.323
  • But don't judge others who choose not to keep them.
  • 00:09:27.323 --> 00:09:31.193
  • You know, the same truth applies to us today.
  • 00:09:31.193 --> 00:09:34.730
  • You know, if you don't wanna dance, fine, don't dance.
  • 00:09:34.730 --> 00:09:38.834
  • Frankly, some of you shouldn't even try to dance.
  • 00:09:38.834 --> 00:09:41.170
  • You know, it's a sin against god and man for you to try.
  • 00:09:41.170 --> 00:09:45.875
  • If you don't wanna dance, fine.
  • 00:09:45.875 --> 00:09:47.343
  • If you don't wanna go to the movies, fine.
  • 00:09:47.343 --> 00:09:49.245
  • If you don't want to smoke cigars, fine.
  • 00:09:49.245 --> 00:09:50.946
  • There are very good reasons not to do that, but don't make your
  • 00:09:50.946 --> 00:09:54.950
  • Personal conviction, somebody else's obligation.
  • 00:09:54.950 --> 00:09:58.054
  • That's legalism, that's what he's saying here.
  • 00:09:58.054 --> 00:10:01.090
  • Now, even though we're not under those old testament
  • 00:10:01.090 --> 00:10:04.026
  • Restrictions, i do believe there's some very valuable
  • 00:10:04.026 --> 00:10:06.929
  • Principles for us about the sabbath we can observe today.
  • 00:10:06.929 --> 00:10:10.499
  • But before we look at those principles, let's look very
  • 00:10:10.499 --> 00:10:14.403
  • Quickly at jesus's sabbath squabbles.
  • 00:10:14.403 --> 00:10:17.640
  • There were two of them uh in which jesus was confronted
  • 00:10:17.640 --> 00:10:21.243
  • With the sabbath.
  • 00:10:21.243 --> 00:10:22.578
  • First of all, i call the case of the hungry disciples.
  • 00:10:22.578 --> 00:10:25.314
  • It's found in verses 1 to 5 of luke 6.
  • 00:10:25.314 --> 00:10:27.550
  • Look at verse 1: "now it came about that on
  • 00:10:27.550 --> 00:10:30.052
  • A certain sabbath, jesus was passing through
  • 00:10:30.052 --> 00:10:32.521
  • Some grainfields, and his disciples were
  • 00:10:32.521 --> 00:10:36.659
  • Picking and eating the heads of grain,
  • 00:10:36.659 --> 00:10:39.528
  • Rubbing them in their hands.
  • 00:10:39.528 --> 00:10:41.464
  • But some of the pharisees said, 'why do you do
  • 00:10:41.464 --> 00:10:43.799
  • What is not lawful on the sabbath?'"
  • 00:10:43.799 --> 00:10:47.269
  • But the pharisees added to god's law and they said on the
  • 00:10:47.269 --> 00:10:50.906
  • Sabbath, you couldn't reap, thresh, winnow, or prepare any
  • 00:10:50.906 --> 00:10:53.642
  • Kind of food on the sabbath day.
  • 00:10:53.642 --> 00:10:56.178
  • And therefore, the disciples were breaking the
  • 00:10:56.178 --> 00:10:59.515
  • Pharisees' rule.
  • 00:10:59.515 --> 00:11:00.850
  • How did jesus answer?
  • 00:11:00.850 --> 00:11:02.184
  • Look at verses 3 and 4: "and jesus answered
  • 00:11:02.184 --> 00:11:04.353
  • Them and said, 'have you not even read what
  • 00:11:04.353 --> 00:11:06.922
  • David did when he was hungry, he and those who
  • 00:11:06.922 --> 00:11:09.625
  • Were with him; how he entered the house of god,
  • 00:11:09.625 --> 00:11:12.795
  • And took and ate the consecrated bread,
  • 00:11:12.795 --> 00:11:14.830
  • Which is not lawful for any to eat except the
  • 00:11:14.830 --> 00:11:18.667
  • Priests alone and he gave it his companions?'"
  • 00:11:18.667 --> 00:11:21.837
  • Now, this is a reference to 1 samuel 21.
  • 00:11:21.837 --> 00:11:24.907
  • David and his men were fleeing king saul.
  • 00:11:24.907 --> 00:11:27.777
  • They were hungry, they had no place to eat.
  • 00:11:27.777 --> 00:11:29.945
  • So, they go into the tabernacle, they see those 12 loaves of
  • 00:11:29.945 --> 00:11:33.382
  • Bread, the showbread, that were dedicated to god, and they
  • 00:11:33.382 --> 00:11:37.453
  • Ate it.
  • 00:11:37.453 --> 00:11:38.788
  • Now, 1 samuel 22, chapter 22, and gives a strong inference
  • 00:11:38.788 --> 00:11:43.259
  • That the priest had inquired of god of whether this was okay
  • 00:11:43.259 --> 00:11:46.262
  • Or not.
  • 00:11:46.262 --> 00:11:47.596
  • But nevertheless, they ate this bread, showing that god is more
  • 00:11:47.596 --> 00:11:50.432
  • Interested in the spirit of the law than the letter of the law.
  • 00:11:50.432 --> 00:11:54.870
  • And that's what jesus said.
  • 00:11:54.870 --> 00:11:56.505
  • But somebody might say, "well, jesus, if you just start
  • 00:11:56.505 --> 00:11:59.241
  • Interpreting god's law however you want to, that leads
  • 00:11:59.241 --> 00:12:02.044
  • To chaos."
  • 00:12:02.044 --> 00:12:03.412
  • Well, look at what jesus said in verse 5:
  • 00:12:03.412 --> 00:12:04.780
  • "and he said to them, 'the son of man is lord
  • 00:12:04.780 --> 00:12:09.185
  • Of the sabbath.'"
  • 00:12:09.185 --> 00:12:10.886
  • Jesus was saying, "hey, don't forget who i am,
  • 00:12:10.886 --> 00:12:13.989
  • I'm god.
  • 00:12:13.989 --> 00:12:15.491
  • I'm the one who wrote this law to begin with.
  • 00:12:15.491 --> 00:12:18.127
  • I can interpret it any way i want."
  • 00:12:18.127 --> 00:12:22.531
  • And by saying such a thing, he enraged the pharisees.
  • 00:12:22.531 --> 00:12:26.402
  • We find the second sabbath squabble beginning in verse 6,
  • 00:12:26.402 --> 00:12:30.139
  • The case of the handicapped man.
  • 00:12:30.139 --> 00:12:32.041
  • Look at this in verse 6: "and it came about on
  • 00:12:32.041 --> 00:12:34.343
  • Another sabbath, that jesus entered the
  • 00:12:34.343 --> 00:12:36.412
  • Synagogue and was teaching; and there was
  • 00:12:36.412 --> 00:12:38.914
  • A man there whose right hand was withered.
  • 00:12:38.914 --> 00:12:41.717
  • And the scribes and the pharisees were
  • 00:12:41.717 --> 00:12:43.485
  • Watching him closely," literally in greek, they
  • 00:12:43.485 --> 00:12:46.288
  • Were spying on him, "to see if he healed on
  • 00:12:46.288 --> 00:12:49.959
  • The sabbath, in order that they might find
  • 00:12:49.959 --> 00:12:52.228
  • Reason to accuse him."
  • 00:12:52.228 --> 00:12:54.230
  • They were really worried that jesus was actually
  • 00:12:54.230 --> 00:12:57.099
  • Gonna do something nice
  • 00:12:57.099 --> 00:12:58.734
  • For somebody on the sabbath, and heal this man.
  • 00:12:58.734 --> 00:13:01.503
  • Look at how jesus responded, verse 8: "but
  • 00:13:01.503 --> 00:13:03.973
  • Jesus knew what they were thinking, and so
  • 00:13:03.973 --> 00:13:06.375
  • He said to the man with the withered hand,
  • 00:13:06.375 --> 00:13:08.010
  • 'rise and come forward!'
  • 00:13:08.010 --> 00:13:09.578
  • And so the man rose and came forward.
  • 00:13:09.578 --> 00:13:11.547
  • And then jesus said to them, 'i ask you, is it
  • 00:13:11.547 --> 00:13:16.352
  • Lawful on the sabbath to do good or to do harm,
  • 00:13:16.352 --> 00:13:20.823
  • To save a life or to destroy it?'"
  • 00:13:20.823 --> 00:13:23.592
  • You see, the old testament law said you weren't
  • 00:13:23.592 --> 00:13:28.163
  • To work on the sabbath.
  • 00:13:28.163 --> 00:13:30.032
  • However, if you had a sheep that was lost or was injured, you had
  • 00:13:30.032 --> 00:13:33.235
  • The freedom to rescue it.
  • 00:13:33.235 --> 00:13:35.104
  • Now, here's the point: if you can do that for an animal, if
  • 00:13:35.104 --> 00:13:38.374
  • You can rescue and help heal an animal, don't you think you
  • 00:13:38.374 --> 00:13:42.044
  • Ought to be able to do it for another human being?
  • 00:13:42.044 --> 00:13:44.680
  • I mean, why is it people would care more about animals than
  • 00:13:44.680 --> 00:13:47.616
  • They do human beings who are created in the eyes of god, in
  • 00:13:47.616 --> 00:13:52.254
  • The image of god?
  • 00:13:52.254 --> 00:13:53.789
  • And yet you've seen that same hypocrisy today.
  • 00:13:53.789 --> 00:13:57.059
  • Then jesus sticks the knife in even deeper.
  • 00:13:57.059 --> 00:14:00.262
  • He said, "by the way, pharisees, is it better to save a life or
  • 00:14:00.262 --> 00:14:04.800
  • Destroy it on the sabbath?
  • 00:14:04.800 --> 00:14:07.136
  • You're all concerned what i'm doing on the sabbath.
  • 00:14:07.136 --> 00:14:10.105
  • What are you doing?"
  • 00:14:10.105 --> 00:14:11.473
  • And what they were doing was plotting to kill the son of god.
  • 00:14:11.473 --> 00:14:15.744
  • So what he's saying is, who's really doing good and who's
  • 00:14:15.744 --> 00:14:18.847
  • Really doing evil here as well?
  • 00:14:18.847 --> 00:14:21.283
  • Verse 10: "and after looking around at them
  • 00:14:21.283 --> 00:14:23.585
  • All, he said to him, 'stretch out your hand!'
  • 00:14:23.585 --> 00:14:26.455
  • And he did so; and his hand was restored.
  • 00:14:26.455 --> 00:14:29.491
  • But they themselves were filled with rage, and
  • 00:14:29.491 --> 00:14:32.394
  • Discussed together what they might do to jesus."
  • 00:14:32.394 --> 00:14:35.698
  • No, look, i understand, 2,000 years later,
  • 00:14:35.698 --> 00:14:39.368
  • Most of you are not wrestling whether or not you can pluck
  • 00:14:39.368 --> 00:14:42.104
  • A head of wheat from somebody's field.
  • 00:14:42.104 --> 00:14:44.340
  • You're not trying to determine whether or not you ought to heal
  • 00:14:44.340 --> 00:14:46.575
  • Somebody of a withered hand.
  • 00:14:46.575 --> 00:14:48.944
  • But i believe god's word is given to us for a reason.
  • 00:14:48.944 --> 00:14:51.747
  • I believe in this story and in god's word, we find some
  • 00:14:51.747 --> 00:14:55.050
  • Invaluable, lasting principles that ought to help us in our own
  • 00:14:55.050 --> 00:14:58.954
  • Walk with god.
  • 00:14:58.954 --> 00:15:00.656
  • And so i wanna close today briefly with three lasting
  • 00:15:00.656 --> 00:15:03.726
  • Lessons that come from this passage about our observance of
  • 00:15:03.726 --> 00:15:07.896
  • The sabbath.
  • 00:15:07.896 --> 00:15:09.231
  • First of all, principle number one: recognize the difference
  • 00:15:09.231 --> 00:15:12.568
  • Between legalism and obedience.
  • 00:15:12.568 --> 00:15:16.538
  • You know, whenever i speak out against legalism, i'm hesitant
  • 00:15:16.538 --> 00:15:20.309
  • To do so because i know people will misunderstand.
  • 00:15:20.309 --> 00:15:23.078
  • People confuse legalism with obedience.
  • 00:15:23.078 --> 00:15:25.614
  • When we talk about legalism, we're not talking about god's
  • 00:15:25.614 --> 00:15:28.617
  • Laws, we're talking about manmade laws.
  • 00:15:28.617 --> 00:15:32.254
  • And we are to avoid those because we live under grace.
  • 00:15:32.254 --> 00:15:36.291
  • But a lot of times, people confuse that with obedience, and
  • 00:15:36.291 --> 00:15:40.162
  • They use god's grace--listen to this--as an excuse for
  • 00:15:40.162 --> 00:15:44.600
  • Immorality, self-indulgence, non-involvement in god's
  • 00:15:44.600 --> 00:15:49.104
  • Kingdom's work.
  • 00:15:49.104 --> 00:15:50.706
  • Don't operate according to a lower standard, we have a
  • 00:15:50.706 --> 00:15:53.675
  • Higher standard.
  • 00:15:53.675 --> 00:15:55.411
  • Grace imposes a higher standard of obedience, not a
  • 00:15:55.411 --> 00:16:00.949
  • Lower standard.
  • 00:16:00.949 --> 00:16:02.317
  • Didn't jesus say that?
  • 00:16:02.317 --> 00:16:03.652
  • He said, "the old testament said, 'you shall not
  • 00:16:03.652 --> 00:16:05.521
  • Commit adultery.'
  • 00:16:05.521 --> 00:16:06.922
  • But i say to you, whoever looks on somebody with lust is guilty
  • 00:16:06.922 --> 00:16:10.959
  • Of adultery."
  • 00:16:10.959 --> 00:16:12.327
  • The new testament is a higher standard of behavior.
  • 00:16:12.327 --> 00:16:16.131
  • Listen, grace is not an excuse for disobedience to god.
  • 00:16:16.131 --> 00:16:20.869
  • Remember the principle behind the sabbath?
  • 00:16:20.869 --> 00:16:24.239
  • No, we're not under the old testament restrictions about
  • 00:16:24.239 --> 00:16:27.176
  • What to do on the seventh day, but the principle still applies.
  • 00:16:27.176 --> 00:16:31.680
  • There needs to be one day a week when we focus on our
  • 00:16:31.680 --> 00:16:35.551
  • Relationship with god.
  • 00:16:35.551 --> 00:16:37.352
  • And by the way, we don't do that by ourselves, we do it in the
  • 00:16:37.352 --> 00:16:40.622
  • Community of other believers.
  • 00:16:40.622 --> 00:16:43.959
  • In hebrews 10, verses 24 and 25, the new testament gives us the
  • 00:16:43.959 --> 00:16:48.197
  • Standard: "and let us consider how to stimulate
  • 00:16:48.197 --> 00:16:51.934
  • One another to love and good deeds, not
  • 00:16:51.934 --> 00:16:55.637
  • Forsaking our own assembling together, as is
  • 00:16:55.637 --> 00:16:58.807
  • The habit of some, but encouraging
  • 00:16:58.807 --> 00:17:01.110
  • One another; and all the more
  • 00:17:01.110 --> 00:17:03.078
  • As you see the day drawing near."
  • 00:17:03.078 --> 00:17:05.214
  • But look, this passage is not saying you can
  • 00:17:05.214 --> 00:17:07.516
  • Never ever miss a sunday.
  • 00:17:07.516 --> 00:17:09.418
  • It's not saying that.
  • 00:17:09.418 --> 00:17:11.320
  • The key word is 'habit.'
  • 00:17:11.320 --> 00:17:14.022
  • What is your habit on sunday?
  • 00:17:14.022 --> 00:17:16.658
  • If you find yourself being gone from here as much as you're
  • 00:17:16.658 --> 00:17:19.394
  • Here, or you find yourself being gone more than you're here,
  • 00:17:19.394 --> 00:17:24.366
  • You're not obeying god.
  • 00:17:24.366 --> 00:17:26.435
  • First of all, you're robbing yourself of the spiritual
  • 00:17:26.435 --> 00:17:29.972
  • Encouragement we all need that comes from being with god's
  • 00:17:29.972 --> 00:17:32.774
  • People, singing together, hearing god's word, praying
  • 00:17:32.774 --> 00:17:36.445
  • Together, encouraging one another.
  • 00:17:36.445 --> 00:17:38.280
  • You are robbing yourself of the spiritual resource you need that
  • 00:17:38.280 --> 00:17:42.351
  • Comes from fellowship.
  • 00:17:42.351 --> 00:17:44.319
  • But when you're not here, you're also robbing other people of
  • 00:17:44.319 --> 00:17:47.389
  • What they need.
  • 00:17:47.389 --> 00:17:48.724
  • You heard me say a few weeks ago, when you're not here on
  • 00:17:48.724 --> 00:17:50.959
  • Sunday morning, that's one less voice praising god in song.
  • 00:17:50.959 --> 00:17:54.863
  • That's one less prayer being offered during the invitation.
  • 00:17:54.863 --> 00:17:58.233
  • That's one less spiritual gift being operated and exercised in
  • 00:17:58.233 --> 00:18:02.037
  • The body of christ.
  • 00:18:02.037 --> 00:18:03.372
  • Your absence has an impact, just not on you, but on others
  • 00:18:03.372 --> 00:18:07.676
  • As well.
  • 00:18:07.676 --> 00:18:09.011
  • And that's why we need to make our presence in church an
  • 00:18:09.011 --> 00:18:13.448
  • Absolute priority.
  • 00:18:13.448 --> 00:18:15.817
  • You cannot pull your kids out of church and not have some
  • 00:18:15.817 --> 00:18:19.321
  • Serious consequences.
  • 00:18:19.321 --> 00:18:21.390
  • You know, i had somebody hand me a couple of years ago an
  • 00:18:21.390 --> 00:18:26.361
  • Editorial, an op-ed piece, not from the "baptist standard," but
  • 00:18:26.361 --> 00:18:31.266
  • From "sports illustrated."
  • 00:18:31.266 --> 00:18:33.769
  • And it was about the increasing propensity of having games on
  • 00:18:33.769 --> 00:18:37.339
  • Sunday and what parents needed to do about it.
  • 00:18:37.339 --> 00:18:41.109
  • And this writer talks about what one city decided to do.
  • 00:18:41.109 --> 00:18:45.347
  • He says, "well, the religion bosses have decided that they're
  • 00:18:45.347 --> 00:18:49.218
  • Not going to take it anymore.
  • 00:18:49.218 --> 00:18:51.153
  • Spiritual leaders in this town got together recently and
  • 00:18:51.153 --> 00:18:54.823
  • Appealed for sports leagues to stop scheduling games before
  • 00:18:54.823 --> 00:18:59.061
  • Noon on sunday.
  • 00:18:59.061 --> 00:19:00.629
  • A meeting between them and area youth coaches is set for may.
  • 00:19:00.629 --> 00:19:04.700
  • We'll see who kneels first, but don't bet on the coaches doing
  • 00:19:04.700 --> 00:19:09.871
  • The right thing.
  • 00:19:09.871 --> 00:19:11.240
  • If they could, they'd have your kids running stairs on
  • 00:19:11.240 --> 00:19:14.676
  • Christmas morning.
  • 00:19:14.676 --> 00:19:16.645
  • What has to happen is parents have to start saying no, not to
  • 00:19:16.645 --> 00:19:22.150
  • Their kids, but to their kids' coaches.
  • 00:19:22.150 --> 00:19:25.320
  • One man said, 'i told my boy's coach he wouldn't be playing
  • 00:19:25.320 --> 00:19:28.657
  • On sundays.'
  • 00:19:28.657 --> 00:19:29.992
  • And the coach looked shocked.
  • 00:19:29.992 --> 00:19:31.860
  • I said, 'you act like nobody's ever said that to you before.'
  • 00:19:31.860 --> 00:19:35.230
  • And the coach said, 'honestly, nobody has.'
  • 00:19:35.230 --> 00:19:38.567
  • Well, i'm with the holy men," this writer says.
  • 00:19:38.567 --> 00:19:41.236
  • "not that i'm the reverend lovejoy, but i just feel sorry
  • 00:19:41.236 --> 00:19:44.139
  • For these kids who get nothing but organized sports crammed
  • 00:19:44.139 --> 00:19:47.743
  • Down their gullets 24/7.
  • 00:19:47.743 --> 00:19:50.178
  • My lord, even god took a day off.
  • 00:19:50.178 --> 00:19:54.950
  • Kids might weep with joy just to get a day off from sports.
  • 00:19:54.950 --> 00:19:59.121
  • If they don't spend it at church, maybe they'll spend it
  • 00:19:59.121 --> 00:20:01.323
  • Getting to know their siblings' names again or swing in a
  • 00:20:01.323 --> 00:20:04.760
  • Hammock without hearing a coach screaming, 'get your hips into
  • 00:20:04.760 --> 00:20:08.930
  • It, samantha.'
  • 00:20:08.930 --> 00:20:10.699
  • Hey, you do what you want.
  • 00:20:10.699 --> 00:20:13.402
  • But just remember, when little billy has two free throws to win
  • 00:20:13.402 --> 00:20:17.272
  • Or lose a game on some sunday morning, good luck finding
  • 00:20:17.272 --> 00:20:21.109
  • Somebody who will answer your prayers."
  • 00:20:21.109 --> 00:20:24.313
  • Now, that's from "sports illustrated."
  • 00:20:24.313 --> 00:20:26.882
  • We who are the church of god need to stand up and say no
  • 00:20:26.882 --> 00:20:30.085
  • To this.
  • 00:20:30.085 --> 00:20:31.453
  • And let me say to you parents: your greatest responsibility,
  • 00:20:31.453 --> 00:20:35.691
  • My greatest responsibility to you as a parent, is to instill
  • 00:20:35.691 --> 00:20:39.795
  • Biblical spiritual truth into the lives of our children.
  • 00:20:39.795 --> 00:20:44.333
  • That is the reason god gave these children to us.
  • 00:20:44.333 --> 00:20:48.370
  • And for you to not have your child here, to ensure some kind
  • 00:20:48.370 --> 00:20:52.474
  • Of hope for success in the sports world is going to lead to
  • 00:20:52.474 --> 00:20:55.944
  • Destruction and lie.
  • 00:20:55.944 --> 00:20:57.279
  • The final lasting lesson i want to talk about today is: resist
  • 00:20:57.279 --> 00:21:00.682
  • The urge to impose your convictions on others.
  • 00:21:00.682 --> 00:21:04.686
  • In issues that the bible doesn't address directly, the gray area,
  • 00:21:04.686 --> 00:21:08.857
  • So to speak, resist the urge to impose your conviction
  • 00:21:08.857 --> 00:21:12.494
  • On others.
  • 00:21:12.494 --> 00:21:13.862
  • The two most famous preachers of the 19th century was the
  • 00:21:13.862 --> 00:21:17.299
  • American evangelist, d.l. moody, and the london pastor,
  • 00:21:17.299 --> 00:21:21.136
  • Charles haddon spurgeon.
  • 00:21:21.136 --> 00:21:22.971
  • One day, d.l. moody decided he would travel to london to meet
  • 00:21:22.971 --> 00:21:26.641
  • Mr. spurgeon in person.
  • 00:21:26.641 --> 00:21:28.844
  • He arrived in london, went to spurgeon's home, knocked on
  • 00:21:28.844 --> 00:21:31.480
  • The door.
  • 00:21:31.480 --> 00:21:32.814
  • When the door opened, d.l. moody was shocked to see the
  • 00:21:32.814 --> 00:21:35.751
  • Legendary charles spurgeon standing there smoking a cigar.
  • 00:21:35.751 --> 00:21:42.591
  • D.l. moody said, "how could you, a man of god, smoke that?"
  • 00:21:42.591 --> 00:21:49.364
  • Spurgeon took the stogie out of his mouth, started tapping the
  • 00:21:49.364 --> 00:21:53.034
  • Rather large stomach of d.l. moody and said, "how could you,
  • 00:21:53.034 --> 00:21:57.672
  • A man of god, be so fat?"
  • 00:21:57.672 --> 00:22:03.912
  • You know, jesus said, "before you take the speck out of your
  • 00:22:03.912 --> 00:22:07.549
  • Brother's eye, remove the plank out of your own eye."
  • 00:22:07.549 --> 00:22:12.387
  • Look, in these areas that the bible doesn't give specific
  • 00:22:12.387 --> 00:22:15.757
  • Direction on, try to learn the principles from god's word that
  • 00:22:15.757 --> 00:22:20.061
  • Are behind those regulations.
  • 00:22:20.061 --> 00:22:22.497
  • Pray for god's leadership and how you should act and behave,
  • 00:22:22.497 --> 00:22:27.836
  • But resist the urge to make your conviction, somebody
  • 00:22:27.836 --> 00:22:31.740
  • Else's obligation.
  • 00:22:31.740 --> 00:22:34.142
  • If we do that, we'll all live happily together.
  • 00:22:34.142 --> 00:22:39.314
  • Jeffress: the sabbath is god's gift to us,
  • 00:22:43.251 --> 00:22:45.754
  • Not a burden to bear.
  • 00:22:45.754 --> 00:22:47.656
  • And i hope today's message has helped you understand the
  • 00:22:47.656 --> 00:22:50.158
  • Difference between legalism and true obedience to god.
  • 00:22:50.158 --> 00:22:54.663
  • Well, here on "pathway to victory," we keep god's word at
  • 00:22:54.663 --> 00:22:57.599
  • The center of every program, not human opinions or cultural
  • 00:22:57.599 --> 00:23:02.204
  • Trends, but the unchanging truth of scripture, and that's
  • 00:23:02.204 --> 00:23:06.441
  • Possible because of faithful partners like you who support
  • 00:23:06.441 --> 00:23:10.212
  • This ministry.
  • 00:23:10.212 --> 00:23:11.746
  • Your generosity ensures that we can continue to teach the bible
  • 00:23:11.746 --> 00:23:15.684
  • Clearly and without compromise.
  • 00:23:15.684 --> 00:23:18.820
  • Because of your faithful giving, we're able to address real life
  • 00:23:18.820 --> 00:23:21.923
  • Questions christians face, teaching them how to apply
  • 00:23:21.923 --> 00:23:25.894
  • Biblical principles to their daily decisions.
  • 00:23:25.894 --> 00:23:29.698
  • Thank you for partnering with us as together we pierce the
  • 00:23:29.698 --> 00:23:33.301
  • Darkness with the light of god's word.
  • 00:23:33.301 --> 00:23:35.937
  • Now, stay right there, i'll be back with more "pathway to
  • 00:23:35.937 --> 00:23:38.406
  • Victory" in just a moment.

  • Male announcer: we all need god's strength to make it
  • 00:23:43.211 --> 00:23:45.380
  • Through the day.

  • Jeffress: i know how challenging it can be to stay connected with
  • 00:24:00.395 --> 00:24:03.498
  • God in our busy lives.
  • 00:24:03.498 --> 00:24:05.333
  • In my new devotional, i provide personal reflections and

  • A friend or loved one.

  • Request your copy of "encouragement for the heart of

  • Ministry of pathway to victory, or when you become a

  • Pathway partner.

  • Book and life application guide, and the "7 marks of a disciple"
  • 00:24:52.547 --> 00:24:56.585
  • Message series on both cd and dvd.
  • 00:24:56.585 --> 00:24:59.621
  • Thank you for supporting pathway to victory.
  • 00:24:59.621 --> 00:25:02.123
  • Your generous partnership helps us impact you and your family
  • 00:25:02.123 --> 00:25:05.727
  • And a nation in deep spiritual need with the transforming truth
  • 00:25:05.727 --> 00:25:09.731
  • Of god's word.
  • 00:25:09.731 --> 00:25:12.834
  • Jeffress: the old testament laws may have been a shadow pointing
  • 00:25:12.901 --> 00:25:16.204
  • To jesus christ, but the principle still remains: god
  • 00:25:16.204 --> 00:25:20.342
  • Designed us to take a day of rest to focus our
  • 00:25:20.342 --> 00:25:23.645
  • Relationship on him and community with other believers.
  • 00:25:23.645 --> 00:25:28.416
  • And when you view the sabbath the way god intended, it becomes
  • 00:25:28.416 --> 00:25:32.087
  • A blessing, not a burden.
  • 00:25:32.087 --> 00:25:34.422
  • Well, the sermon on the mount is often regarded as the greatest
  • 00:25:34.422 --> 00:25:37.659
  • Message ever preached.
  • 00:25:37.659 --> 00:25:39.661
  • In it, jesus commanded his followers to love their enemies
  • 00:25:39.661 --> 00:25:43.665
  • And turn the other cheek.
  • 00:25:43.665 --> 00:25:45.333
  • But are such lofty ideals truly practical in today's world?
  • 00:25:45.333 --> 00:25:49.971
  • Stay tuned for a preview of what's coming up next
  • 00:25:49.971 --> 00:25:52.741
  • On "pathway to victory."
  • 00:25:52.741 --> 00:25:55.877
  • Jeffress: jesus is talking about how we are to act as christians.
  • 00:25:55.944 --> 00:25:59.280
  • And yes, it's difficult.
  • 00:25:59.280 --> 00:26:01.683
  • If you believe this world is all that there is, these commands
  • 00:26:01.683 --> 00:26:05.854
  • Are impossible to keep, there's no motivation for keeping them.
  • 00:26:05.854 --> 00:26:09.357
  • When you know what jesus knows about the future,
  • 00:26:09.357 --> 00:26:13.461
  • You can be generous in your attitude
  • 00:26:13.461 --> 00:26:15.797
  • Toward difficult circumstances and difficult people.
  • 00:26:15.797 --> 00:26:19.668
  • Announcer: set your dvr and join us next time for the message
  • 00:26:19.668 --> 00:26:22.804
  • "the crux of christianity," here on "pathway to victory."
  • 00:26:22.804 --> 00:26:26.608
  • Announcer: step away from your daily routine and immerse
  • 00:26:30.645 --> 00:26:33.014
  • Yourself in god's masterpiece on the "pathway to victory" cruise
  • 00:26:33.014 --> 00:26:36.718
  • To alaska, june 13 through 20, 2026.
  • 00:26:36.718 --> 00:26:40.622
  • Jeffress: imagine starting each day immersed in god's word, then
  • 00:26:40.622 --> 00:26:44.025
  • Stepping out to witness god's grandeur, from the majestic
  • 00:26:44.025 --> 00:26:47.495
  • Glaciers to soaring eagles.
  • 00:26:47.495 --> 00:26:50.231
  • These moments in god's creation will deepen your faith in
  • 00:26:50.231 --> 00:26:53.601
  • Powerful ways.
  • 00:26:53.601 --> 00:26:55.003
  • Announcer: experience 5-star dining, luxurious state rooms,
  • 00:26:55.003 --> 00:26:58.206
  • And exceptional service while visiting iconic ports like
  • 00:26:58.206 --> 00:27:01.076
  • Juneau, ketchikan, and skagway.
  • 00:27:01.076 --> 00:27:03.645
  • Jeffress: we'll explore god's word together against the
  • 00:27:03.645 --> 00:27:06.081
  • Backdrop of his most impressive handiwork.
  • 00:27:06.081 --> 00:27:09.417
  • I promise, you'll return home with memories that will last a
  • 00:27:09.417 --> 00:27:12.787
  • Lifetime and a heart renewed by god's presence.
  • 00:27:12.787 --> 00:27:17.125
  • Announcer: to book your spot on the 2026 "pathway to victory"
  • 00:27:17.125 --> 00:27:19.928
  • Cruise to alaska, call... or go to ptv.org.
  • 00:27:19.928 --> 00:27:19.928
