  • 00:05:34.424 --> 00:05:39.529
  • The bible mentions at least five authority relationships that we
  • 00:05:39.529 --> 00:05:43.533
  • Need to consider whenever we're trying to make a decision
  • 00:05:43.533 --> 00:05:45.868
  • In life.
  • 00:05:45.868 --> 00:05:47.203
  • The first relationship is that of husbands and wives.
  • 00:05:47.203 --> 00:05:51.274
  • Husbands and wives.
  • 00:05:51.274 --> 00:05:54.277
  • Now i realize i'm getting ready to enter a minefield here when i
  • 00:05:54.277 --> 00:05:58.014
  • Talk about submission.
  • 00:05:58.014 --> 00:06:00.483
  • Any time i hear the subject about submission, i'm reminded
  • 00:06:00.483 --> 00:06:03.519
  • Of the story of the man who was attending a men's conference at
  • 00:06:03.519 --> 00:06:07.623
  • His church, and when he walked into the foyer to register, he
  • 00:06:07.623 --> 00:06:11.160
  • Noticed there were two lines.
  • 00:06:11.160 --> 00:06:13.262
  • There was one line and it had a sign above it that said
  • 00:06:13.262 --> 00:06:16.499
  • "husbands who have been dominated by their wives," and
  • 00:06:16.499 --> 00:06:20.203

  • 00:06:23.139 --> 00:06:25.241

  • 00:06:48.564 --> 00:06:50.333

  • 00:06:50.333 --> 00:06:57.273
  • Husbands are not to dominate their wives.
  • 00:06:57.273 --> 00:07:01.310
  • Turn over to ephesians chapter 5, ephesians chapter 5.
  • 00:07:01.310 --> 00:07:05.581
  • Let me disabuse some of you about this whole notion

  • Of submission.
  • 00:07:07.917 --> 00:07:09.485
  • Let's see what the bible really says in ephesians chapter 5,
  • 00:07:09.485 --> 00:07:13.055
  • Verses 22 to 23.
  • 00:07:13.055 --> 00:07:15.324
  • Paul says, "wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to
  • 00:07:15.324 --> 00:07:20.329
  • The lord.
  • 00:07:20.329 --> 00:07:21.697
  • For the husband is the head of the wife, as christ is the head
  • 00:07:21.697 --> 00:07:25.101
  • Of the church, he himself being the savior of the body."
  • 00:07:25.101 --> 00:07:30.206
  • By the way, would you notice it does not say, "wives obey
  • 00:07:30.206 --> 00:07:34.043
  • Your husbands."
  • 00:07:34.043 --> 00:07:35.411
  • Did you know paul never says for wives to obey their husbands?
  • 00:07:35.411 --> 00:07:40.383
  • Now he goes on to say, "children, obey your parents,"
  • 00:07:40.383 --> 00:07:43.452
  • And he said, "slaves, obey your masters," but it does not say,
  • 00:07:43.452 --> 00:07:46.722
  • "wives, obey your husbands."
  • 00:07:46.722 --> 00:07:49.625
  • Instead, paul uses a different word that's translated,
  • 00:07:49.625 --> 00:07:52.962
  • "be subject to your husbands."
  • 00:07:52.962 --> 00:07:55.231
  • Hupotasso is the greek word.
  • 00:07:55.231 --> 00:07:57.533
  • It's a military term that means to arrange under rank.
  • 00:07:57.533 --> 00:08:02.805
  • And paul is saying that in a household, just like the
  • 00:08:02.805 --> 00:08:06.742
  • Military, there has to be a clear chain of command and in
  • 00:08:06.742 --> 00:08:12.281
  • The house it is for the husband to be the head and for the wife
  • 00:08:12.281 --> 00:08:16.152
  • To place herself underneath the headship of the husband.
  • 00:08:16.152 --> 00:08:20.089
  • Now to give some further illumination on this idea, paul
  • 00:08:20.089 --> 00:08:23.593
  • Gives us a word in 1 corinthians 11, verse 3.
  • 00:08:23.593 --> 00:08:26.362
  • If you wives are kind of bothered by that idea,
  • 00:08:26.362 --> 00:08:28.664
  • The husband being the head of
  • 00:08:28.664 --> 00:08:30.967
  • The wife, listen to what paul said in 1 corinthians 11:3.
  • 00:08:30.967 --> 00:08:33.903
  • He said, "for christ is the head of every man and the man is the
  • 00:08:33.903 --> 00:08:39.175
  • Head of the woman and god is the head of christ."
  • 00:08:39.175 --> 00:08:45.047
  • Notice that last phrase, "just as the man is the head of a
  • 00:08:45.047 --> 00:08:48.718
  • Woman, god is the head of christ."
  • 00:08:48.718 --> 00:08:50.853
  • Now, let's take a pop quiz here, theological pop quiz.
  • 00:08:50.853 --> 00:08:54.957
  • Is god the father superior to jesus christ the son?
  • 00:08:54.957 --> 00:08:59.795
  • No, god is not superior to jesus christ.
  • 00:08:59.795 --> 00:09:03.332
  • That's heresy.
  • 00:09:03.332 --> 00:09:05.201
  • We believe that god the father and god the son and god the
  • 00:09:05.201 --> 00:09:08.270
  • Spirit are all coequal with one another.
  • 00:09:08.270 --> 00:09:11.507
  • But the bible also says that jesus the son, who is absolutely
  • 00:09:11.507 --> 00:09:15.411
  • Equal to god the father, he voluntarily came and placed
  • 00:09:15.411 --> 00:09:19.548
  • Himself under the authority of the father.
  • 00:09:19.548 --> 00:09:21.751
  • And that's why he came to the cross and gave himself as
  • 00:09:21.751 --> 00:09:24.620
  • A ransom for our sins.
  • 00:09:24.620 --> 00:09:26.022
  • He did so out of submission to the father.
  • 00:09:26.022 --> 00:09:28.724
  • They were equal, but the son chose to submit to the father.
  • 00:09:28.724 --> 00:09:33.229
  • Now that's what you have in the marriage relationship.
  • 00:09:33.229 --> 00:09:36.232
  • Nowhere does the bible teach that men are superior to
  • 00:09:36.232 --> 00:09:39.635
  • Women, nowhere.
  • 00:09:39.635 --> 00:09:41.504
  • In fact, in many relationships and in many ways the woman may
  • 00:09:41.504 --> 00:09:44.940
  • Be superior to the man, but in the relationship, the marriage
  • 00:09:44.940 --> 00:09:48.544
  • Relationship, you have two equals who come together and the
  • 00:09:48.544 --> 00:09:52.615
  • Woman voluntarily places herself under the headship of
  • 00:09:52.615 --> 00:09:56.385
  • The husband.
  • 00:09:56.385 --> 00:09:57.720
  • And god says one of the ways, wives, he's gonna lead you is
  • 00:09:57.720 --> 00:10:01.123
  • Through that husband he has placed over you.
  • 00:10:01.123 --> 00:10:03.826
  • Now, if you don't trust the man you're with to give you
  • 00:10:03.826 --> 00:10:07.630
  • Spiritual direction in life and to speak to you through god,
  • 00:10:07.630 --> 00:10:11.967
  • Don't marry him.
  • 00:10:11.967 --> 00:10:13.302
  • There's--nobody puts a gun to a woman's head and says you have
  • 00:10:13.302 --> 00:10:15.805
  • To marry this person.
  • 00:10:15.805 --> 00:10:17.273
  • You should only marry somebody that you have great confidence
  • 00:10:17.273 --> 00:10:20.443
  • In, especially in their spiritual relationship to god
  • 00:10:20.443 --> 00:10:24.246
  • Because you are to subject yourself to that husband.
  • 00:10:24.246 --> 00:10:27.783
  • You know, there are a lot of marriages today, even christian
  • 00:10:27.783 --> 00:10:30.920
  • Marriages, that are in deep, deep trouble because the husband
  • 00:10:30.920 --> 00:10:35.524
  • Will say, "well, i think this is the way our family ought to go
  • 00:10:35.524 --> 00:10:38.694
  • And this is what we need to do."
  • 00:10:38.694 --> 00:10:40.563
  • And the wife says, "well, you know, i'm prayed about it and
  • 00:10:40.563 --> 00:10:43.065
  • God's leading me a different direction."
  • 00:10:43.065 --> 00:10:45.601
  • Doesn't work that way.
  • 00:10:45.601 --> 00:10:46.969
  • It doesn't work that way.
  • 00:10:46.969 --> 00:10:48.304
  • Whenever you have people claiming god is leading them in
  • 00:10:48.304 --> 00:10:50.840
  • Two different ways, you're gonna have friction in a marriage.
  • 00:10:50.840 --> 00:10:53.542
  • The bible says god is gonna direct the wife through
  • 00:10:53.542 --> 00:10:57.446
  • Her husband.
  • 00:10:57.446 --> 00:10:58.781
  • Now, obviously there's some exceptions to that.
  • 00:10:58.781 --> 00:11:01.517
  • Ladies, if your husband asks you to do something unscriptural,
  • 00:11:01.517 --> 00:11:04.587
  • You're not to obey him.
  • 00:11:04.587 --> 00:11:06.388
  • If your husband asks you to do something immoral, you're not to
  • 00:11:06.388 --> 00:11:09.191
  • Obey him.
  • 00:11:09.191 --> 00:11:10.559
  • But except in those extreme circumstances, one way god
  • 00:11:10.559 --> 00:11:13.896
  • Speaks to you is through that authority figure.
  • 00:11:13.896 --> 00:11:17.266
  • You see, it's like a friend of mine said, "in nature, anything
  • 00:11:17.266 --> 00:11:21.971
  • With two heads is a freak, and anything with no head is dead."
  • 00:11:21.971 --> 00:11:28.511
  • There has to be an authority relationship in any
  • 00:11:28.511 --> 00:11:31.914
  • Organization, including the home.
  • 00:11:31.914 --> 00:11:33.682
  • So one way god speaks is through husbands and wives.
  • 00:11:33.682 --> 00:11:37.386
  • There's another authority relationship in the bible, and
  • 00:11:37.386 --> 00:11:40.022
  • That is between children and their parents.
  • 00:11:40.022 --> 00:11:42.558
  • Look at ephesians chapter 6, verse 1: "children, obey your
  • 00:11:42.558 --> 00:11:47.029
  • Parents in the lord, for this is right.
  • 00:11:47.029 --> 00:11:49.665
  • Honor your father and mother, for this is the first
  • 00:11:49.665 --> 00:11:52.501
  • Commandment with a promise."
  • 00:11:52.501 --> 00:11:54.770
  • Now there he uses the word "obey."
  • 00:11:54.770 --> 00:11:57.973
  • "children, obey your parents."
  • 00:11:57.973 --> 00:12:00.576
  • I told the group over at center stage today, i said when i was
  • 00:12:00.576 --> 00:12:04.980
  • A youth minister, questions that always came up from
  • 00:12:04.980 --> 00:12:08.617
  • The teenagers.
  • 00:12:08.617 --> 00:12:09.952
  • They would ask me, "robert, how do i know what college
  • 00:12:09.952 --> 00:12:11.687
  • I'm supposed to go to?"
  • 00:12:11.687 --> 00:12:13.222
  • Or "how do i know what profession god would have me
  • 00:12:13.222 --> 00:12:15.925
  • To enter into?"
  • 00:12:15.925 --> 00:12:17.293
  • Or "how do i know for sure whether this person is the right
  • 00:12:17.293 --> 00:12:19.795
  • One to marry?"
  • 00:12:19.795 --> 00:12:21.530
  • And i would say, "oh, what do your parents say?"
  • 00:12:21.530 --> 00:12:26.335
  • And they would always look at me like, "what planet did
  • 00:12:26.335 --> 00:12:29.505
  • You arrive from?
  • 00:12:29.505 --> 00:12:31.073
  • My parents?
  • 00:12:31.073 --> 00:12:32.508
  • What did they know about my situation?"
  • 00:12:32.508 --> 00:12:35.477
  • And yet the bible says one of the ways god leads us and leads
  • 00:12:35.477 --> 00:12:39.715
  • Children is through the parents he has placed over them.
  • 00:12:39.715 --> 00:12:43.018
  • "children, obey your parents."
  • 00:12:43.018 --> 00:12:44.353
  • Now obviously, as children grow, that relationship changes.
  • 00:12:44.353 --> 00:12:48.424
  • As children become more and more independent, the parent
  • 00:12:48.424 --> 00:12:52.962
  • Transforms from being an authority figure to being
  • 00:12:52.962 --> 00:12:55.564
  • An advisor.
  • 00:12:55.564 --> 00:12:56.899
  • And while adult children are certainly under no obligation to
  • 00:12:56.899 --> 00:13:00.703
  • Obey the commands of their parents, it is wise for them to
  • 00:13:00.703 --> 00:13:04.840
  • At least listen to the counsel of their parents because god can
  • 00:13:04.840 --> 00:13:08.644
  • Communicate that way.
  • 00:13:08.644 --> 00:13:10.379
  • A third relationship that's talked about in the bible is
  • 00:13:10.379 --> 00:13:13.515
  • Between employers and employees.
  • 00:13:13.515 --> 00:13:15.417
  • Look again at ephesians 6, verse 5: "slaves, be obedient to those
  • 00:13:15.417 --> 00:13:19.922
  • Who are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and
  • 00:13:19.922 --> 00:13:23.125
  • Trembling, in sincerity of your heart, as to christ."
  • 00:13:23.125 --> 00:13:29.832
  • If you're an employee, one way god's gonna direct you is
  • 00:13:29.832 --> 00:13:33.135
  • Through that employer that is over you.
  • 00:13:33.135 --> 00:13:36.105
  • And notice what paul says, he says when you obey that boss,
  • 00:13:36.105 --> 00:13:41.610
  • It is just as if you are obeying jesus christ.
  • 00:13:41.610 --> 00:13:45.347
  • You see that?
  • 00:13:45.347 --> 00:13:46.715
  • You are to obey your employee as employer as unto the lord.
  • 00:13:46.715 --> 00:13:52.354
  • God directs that way.
  • 00:13:52.354 --> 00:13:54.123
  • A fourth relationship, authority relationship, is between
  • 00:13:54.123 --> 00:13:56.959
  • Government and citizens.
  • 00:13:56.959 --> 00:13:58.994
  • One way again, god communicates his will to us is through the
  • 00:13:58.994 --> 00:14:02.464
  • Governing authorities he has set over us.
  • 00:14:02.464 --> 00:14:05.034
  • Listen to the words of romans chapter 13, verse 1: "let every
  • 00:14:05.034 --> 00:14:09.705
  • Person be in subjection to the governing authorities.
  • 00:14:09.705 --> 00:14:13.842
  • For there is no authority except from god, and those which exist
  • 00:14:13.842 --> 00:14:19.815
  • Are established by god.
  • 00:14:19.815 --> 00:14:23.585
  • Therefore he who resists the governing authority has opposed
  • 00:14:23.585 --> 00:14:27.356
  • The ordinance of god; and they who have opposed will receive
  • 00:14:27.356 --> 00:14:31.393
  • Condemnation upon themselves."
  • 00:14:31.393 --> 00:14:33.829
  • That is an amazing statement when you think about it.
  • 00:14:33.829 --> 00:14:36.665
  • Paul said governing authorities exist because god has placed
  • 00:14:36.665 --> 00:14:41.203
  • Them there and to resist the government is the same thing as
  • 00:14:41.203 --> 00:14:45.274
  • Resisting god.
  • 00:14:45.274 --> 00:14:47.910
  • Need i remind you who was the ruler of the world when paul
  • 00:14:47.910 --> 00:14:51.580
  • Wrote these words?
  • 00:14:51.580 --> 00:14:53.849
  • Nero, the most evil roman emperor of all time was on the
  • 00:14:53.849 --> 00:14:59.488
  • Throne in rome, and the bible says that we're to obey those
  • 00:14:59.488 --> 00:15:06.295
  • Governing authorities.
  • 00:15:06.295 --> 00:15:07.663
  • Paul said we're to obey governing authorities even
  • 00:15:07.663 --> 00:15:10.666
  • Like nero.
  • 00:15:10.666 --> 00:15:12.768
  • Why?
  • 00:15:12.768 --> 00:15:14.136
  • Because nero's not there except god placed him there.
  • 00:15:14.136 --> 00:15:17.406
  • There is nobody who's going to be in a place of authority
  • 00:15:17.406 --> 00:15:21.443
  • Except god allows it.
  • 00:15:21.443 --> 00:15:22.811
  • We don't know what the purpose is, but god is in control, okay?
  • 00:15:22.811 --> 00:15:26.849
  • We don't need to worry.
  • 00:15:26.849 --> 00:15:28.183
  • And again, there are limits to this idea of obeying government.
  • 00:15:28.183 --> 00:15:31.253
  • Peter said in acts 5:29, when he was told by governing
  • 00:15:31.253 --> 00:15:34.556
  • Authorities not to preach the gospel, he said, "we must obey
  • 00:15:34.556 --> 00:15:37.626
  • God rather than men."
  • 00:15:37.626 --> 00:15:39.161
  • So there are exceptions to that, but unless you're asked to do
  • 00:15:39.161 --> 00:15:42.164
  • Something illegal or unbiblical, you're to obey that
  • 00:15:42.164 --> 00:15:45.968
  • Governing authority.
  • 00:15:45.968 --> 00:15:47.336
  • Number five, another relationship, authority
  • 00:15:47.336 --> 00:15:50.639
  • Relationship, we're to follow is that between spiritual leaders
  • 00:15:50.639 --> 00:15:53.709
  • And the congregation.
  • 00:15:53.709 --> 00:15:55.310
  • Hebrews chapter 13, verse 17: "obey your leaders," talking
  • 00:15:55.310 --> 00:15:59.748
  • About spiritual leaders in the church, "and submit to them, for
  • 00:15:59.748 --> 00:16:03.052
  • They keep watch over your souls as those who will give
  • 00:16:03.052 --> 00:16:06.388
  • An account.
  • 00:16:06.388 --> 00:16:07.856
  • Let them do this with joy and not with grief, for this would
  • 00:16:07.856 --> 00:16:12.061
  • Be unprofitable for you."
  • 00:16:12.061 --> 00:16:15.230
  • God directs the church, the local church, through the
  • 00:16:15.230 --> 00:16:18.634
  • Spiritual authority he has placed over the local church.
  • 00:16:18.634 --> 00:16:23.172
  • And let me just take a moment right now to brag on you all
  • 00:16:23.172 --> 00:16:26.075
  • A little bit.
  • 00:16:26.075 --> 00:16:27.543
  • In the 140-year history of this great church, this church has
  • 00:16:27.543 --> 00:16:32.414
  • Always followed the leadership of its pastor, doesn't matter
  • 00:16:32.414 --> 00:16:36.085
  • Who the pastor has been.
  • 00:16:36.085 --> 00:16:38.353
  • You have done well in following his leadership in the church.
  • 00:16:38.353 --> 00:16:43.158
  • Quite frankly, you can look back and you can see some mistakes
  • 00:16:43.158 --> 00:16:46.462
  • That pastors have made in this church, and i promise you i will
  • 00:16:46.462 --> 00:16:52.167
  • Continue that tradition, okay?
  • 00:16:52.167 --> 00:16:54.703
  • I'll make mistakes.
  • 00:16:54.703 --> 00:16:56.638
  • I'll make bad decisions.
  • 00:16:56.638 --> 00:16:58.273
  • No, no doubt about it.
  • 00:16:58.273 --> 00:16:59.608
  • I am very much imperfect and yet you have followed the leadership
  • 00:16:59.608 --> 00:17:04.346
  • Of your pastor, and i think that's one reason god has
  • 00:17:04.346 --> 00:17:06.782
  • Blessed this church in such a significant way.
  • 00:17:06.782 --> 00:17:10.152
  • Now again, if the pastor does something immoral or if the
  • 00:17:10.152 --> 00:17:12.688
  • Pastor does something unscriptural, that doesn't mean
  • 00:17:12.688 --> 00:17:15.057
  • We blindly follow after that.
  • 00:17:15.057 --> 00:17:17.192
  • But except for those cases we're to follow the spiritual
  • 00:17:17.192 --> 00:17:19.895
  • Leadership in the church.
  • 00:17:19.895 --> 00:17:21.263
  • By the way, pastors watching on television or listening to this
  • 00:17:21.263 --> 00:17:24.633
  • Message, we have a responsibility to the
  • 00:17:24.633 --> 00:17:27.603
  • Congregation as well.
  • 00:17:27.603 --> 00:17:29.471
  • 1 peter chapter 5, verses 2 and 3 say that we are to exercise
  • 00:17:29.471 --> 00:17:34.042
  • Oversight over the church but not lording it over the people.
  • 00:17:34.042 --> 00:17:40.415
  • No pastor is to be a dictator.
  • 00:17:40.415 --> 00:17:43.418
  • We're not to be dictators, we're to be shepherds leading
  • 00:17:43.418 --> 00:17:46.722
  • The people.
  • 00:17:46.722 --> 00:17:48.056
  • We are to feed the sheep, not beat the sheep.
  • 00:17:48.056 --> 00:17:50.959
  • That's our responsibility.
  • 00:17:50.959 --> 00:17:53.028
  • And you know, when the pastor fulfills his responsibility in
  • 00:17:53.028 --> 00:17:56.398
  • Being the shepherd and the congregation follows their
  • 00:17:56.398 --> 00:17:59.134
  • Responsibility in following, you have a beautiful relationship in
  • 00:17:59.134 --> 00:18:02.838
  • Which god can work.
  • 00:18:02.838 --> 00:18:04.740
  • God encourages us to listen to the commands of those in
  • 00:18:04.740 --> 00:18:09.645
  • Authority over us.
  • 00:18:09.645 --> 00:18:11.480
  • What quality does that develop in us?
  • 00:18:11.480 --> 00:18:14.316
  • By looking at authority figures for god's direction, it teaches
  • 00:18:14.316 --> 00:18:18.453
  • Us the quality of obedience.
  • 00:18:18.453 --> 00:18:21.423
  • I want you to write that down, the quality of obedience.
  • 00:18:21.423 --> 00:18:24.526
  • Again, going through this exercise of discovering god's
  • 00:18:24.526 --> 00:18:27.396
  • Will, listening to authority figures teaches us obedience.
  • 00:18:27.396 --> 00:18:30.766
  • To paraphrase the words of the apostle john: if we can't obey
  • 00:18:30.766 --> 00:18:37.406
  • The visible authority figures that we see, how in the world
  • 00:18:37.406 --> 00:18:41.443
  • Will we ever learn to obey the invisible authority of god?
  • 00:18:41.443 --> 00:18:45.914
  • It's one reason god places us all under somebody's authority
  • 00:18:45.914 --> 00:18:49.151
  • So that we can learn how to obey, even when we don't feel
  • 00:18:49.151 --> 00:18:53.722
  • Like obeying.
  • 00:18:53.722 --> 00:18:55.924
  • There's a second group that we ought to consider whenever we're
  • 00:18:55.924 --> 00:18:58.727
  • Seeking god's direction in our life, and that is
  • 00:18:58.727 --> 00:19:01.296
  • Wise counselors.
  • 00:19:01.296 --> 00:19:03.298
  • Wise counselors.
  • 00:19:03.298 --> 00:19:05.467
  • A businessman one time wanted to improve his golf game and so he
  • 00:19:05.467 --> 00:19:08.637
  • Hired a golf pro to give him some tips, but with every
  • 00:19:08.637 --> 00:19:13.075
  • Suggestion the golf pro made, the businessman had some
  • 00:19:13.075 --> 00:19:16.612
  • Argument, some reason, not to follow through on
  • 00:19:16.612 --> 00:19:18.480
  • The suggestion.
  • 00:19:18.480 --> 00:19:20.115
  • About halfway through the session, the golf pro just began
  • 00:19:20.115 --> 00:19:22.851
  • To compliment the businessman.
  • 00:19:22.851 --> 00:19:24.386
  • When the session was over, the businessman pulled out a couple
  • 00:19:24.386 --> 00:19:26.688
  • Hundred dollars, gave it to the pro, and he walked away.
  • 00:19:26.688 --> 00:19:30.158
  • A man who was watching this exchange came up to the golf pro
  • 00:19:30.158 --> 00:19:33.028
  • And said, "i noticed you just told that man what he wanted
  • 00:19:33.028 --> 00:19:37.432
  • To hear.
  • 00:19:37.432 --> 00:19:38.767
  • Why is that?"
  • 00:19:38.767 --> 00:19:40.135
  • And the golf pro, smiling as he stuffed the $200 in his pocket,
  • 00:19:40.135 --> 00:19:43.472
  • Said, "i've been at this long enough to know what people want.
  • 00:19:43.472 --> 00:19:48.110
  • This guy didn't want help, he just wanted an echo."
  • 00:19:48.110 --> 00:19:53.782
  • If you really want to know god's will for your life, you will
  • 00:19:53.782 --> 00:19:57.653
  • Surround yourself with people who will do more than just
  • 00:19:57.653 --> 00:20:00.489
  • Simply be an echo to you.
  • 00:20:00.489 --> 00:20:02.424
  • They'll give you the wise advice that you need.
  • 00:20:02.424 --> 00:20:06.094
  • We have a tragic story in the old testament of someone who
  • 00:20:06.094 --> 00:20:08.630
  • Didn't follow that principle.
  • 00:20:08.630 --> 00:20:10.365
  • His name was rehoboam.
  • 00:20:10.365 --> 00:20:12.367
  • If you have your bibles, turn over to 1 kings chapter 12.
  • 00:20:12.367 --> 00:20:16.071
  • 1 kings chapter 12.
  • 00:20:16.071 --> 00:20:18.040
  • You remember rehoboam was the son of king solomon.
  • 00:20:18.040 --> 00:20:23.378
  • Some people say david was the most successful king in israel.
  • 00:20:23.378 --> 00:20:26.615
  • Other people look at solomon and say, "look at his massive
  • 00:20:26.615 --> 00:20:29.885
  • Expansion projects.
  • 00:20:29.885 --> 00:20:31.386
  • He built the temple.
  • 00:20:31.386 --> 00:20:32.721
  • Look at all that he did."
  • 00:20:32.721 --> 00:20:34.556
  • And so rehoboam assumed the throne, realizing he had some
  • 00:20:34.556 --> 00:20:37.959
  • Pretty big sandals to fill, so he had to determine what he was
  • 00:20:37.959 --> 00:20:41.596
  • Going to do.
  • 00:20:41.596 --> 00:20:42.964
  • And early in his reign some of the people came to king rehoboam
  • 00:20:42.964 --> 00:20:46.168
  • And they offered him this counsel.
  • 00:20:46.168 --> 00:20:48.236
  • Look at verse 4, 1 kings chapter 12: "your father made our yoke
  • 00:20:48.236 --> 00:20:53.675
  • Hard; therefore lighten the hard service of your father and his
  • 00:20:53.675 --> 00:20:57.913
  • Heavy yoke which he put on us, and we will serve you."
  • 00:20:57.913 --> 00:21:02.250
  • They were saying, in effect, "rehoboam, your dad was
  • 00:21:02.250 --> 00:21:04.720
  • A great guy.
  • 00:21:04.720 --> 00:21:06.054
  • He helped us build this great temple and all of these other
  • 00:21:06.054 --> 00:21:08.824
  • Projects, but our people are taxed to the max.
  • 00:21:08.824 --> 00:21:12.361
  • They're tired.
  • 00:21:12.361 --> 00:21:13.695
  • Give the people a little bit of a break and then we'll follow
  • 00:21:13.695 --> 00:21:16.932
  • You anywhere."
  • 00:21:16.932 --> 00:21:18.734
  • Now to rehoboam's credit, he listened and he said, "well,
  • 00:21:18.734 --> 00:21:21.670
  • I'll get back to you on that."
  • 00:21:21.670 --> 00:21:23.438
  • And so he called in a group of advisors.
  • 00:21:23.438 --> 00:21:25.307
  • He called in some older men who were his father's advisors and
  • 00:21:25.307 --> 00:21:28.710
  • Asked them what they thought.
  • 00:21:28.710 --> 00:21:30.379
  • And they said, "rehoboam, the people are right.
  • 00:21:30.379 --> 00:21:33.382
  • They've been taxed to death.
  • 00:21:33.382 --> 00:21:34.850
  • They're working hard.
  • 00:21:34.850 --> 00:21:36.184
  • Give them a break and they will follow you anywhere."
  • 00:21:36.184 --> 00:21:39.888
  • But that's not what rehoboam really wanted to hear.
  • 00:21:39.888 --> 00:21:42.391
  • He wanted to follow in his father's footsteps, he wanted to
  • 00:21:42.391 --> 00:21:45.193
  • Have progress that everybody could see.
  • 00:21:45.193 --> 00:21:47.729
  • So he called in a younger group of contemporaries, advisers.
  • 00:21:47.729 --> 00:21:51.867
  • He said, "what do you think?"
  • 00:21:51.867 --> 00:21:53.568
  • And they said, "oh, rehoboam, you better show these people
  • 00:21:53.568 --> 00:21:57.105
  • Who's boss from the very beginning.
  • 00:21:57.105 --> 00:21:59.841
  • You've got to show them that you're in charge, work them
  • 00:21:59.841 --> 00:22:03.111
  • Hard, let them know who's boss."
  • 00:22:03.111 --> 00:22:05.647
  • So rehoboam considered that advice, and he stood before the
  • 00:22:05.647 --> 00:22:09.718
  • People and he said, "you thought my father was tough.
  • 00:22:09.718 --> 00:22:14.423
  • He's a cream puff compared to me.
  • 00:22:14.423 --> 00:22:16.958
  • You thought you were working hard.
  • 00:22:16.958 --> 00:22:18.527
  • I am gonna work you so hard you're gonna be wishing for the
  • 00:22:18.527 --> 00:22:21.329
  • Days of dear old dad."
  • 00:22:21.329 --> 00:22:23.598
  • The result was the kingdom revolted.
  • 00:22:23.598 --> 00:22:26.501
  • He listened to the wrong advice.
  • 00:22:26.501 --> 00:22:29.271
  • You know, rehoboam's sad experience kinda points out to
  • 00:22:29.271 --> 00:22:34.309
  • Me at least four principles about seeking wise counsel
  • 00:22:34.309 --> 00:22:37.546
  • I want you to jot down on your outline.
  • 00:22:37.546 --> 00:22:41.082
  • Jeffress: there's much more i want to share with you on this
  • 00:22:45.320 --> 00:22:47.189
  • Topic, so please be sure to join me again next time for the
  • 00:22:47.189 --> 00:22:51.393
  • Conclusion of my message.
  • 00:22:51.393 --> 00:22:53.462
  • Now let me close today's program with a note i received from
  • 00:22:53.462 --> 00:22:56.932
  • Marie, who listens to "pathway to victory" from the state
  • 00:22:56.932 --> 00:23:00.302
  • Of washington.
  • 00:23:00.302 --> 00:23:01.837
  • She wrote: "dr. jeffress,
  • 00:23:01.837 --> 00:23:03.171
  • By listening to 'pathway to victory,' i feel
  • 00:23:03.171 --> 00:23:06.174
  • Like i've been brought back to knowing jesus after
  • 00:23:06.174 --> 00:23:09.544
  • A long time away.
  • 00:23:09.544 --> 00:23:10.912
  • Your messages are a great source of inspiration and give me a new
  • 00:23:10.912 --> 00:23:14.950
  • And better understanding of the bible."
  • 00:23:14.950 --> 00:23:17.986
  • Well, thank you, marie, for your encouragement and thank you,
  • 00:23:17.986 --> 00:23:21.656
  • Friends of "pathway to victory," for partnering with us so that

  • Friends like marie and countless others can hear the truth
  • 00:23:25.026 --> 00:23:29.097
  • Of god's word.
  • 00:23:29.097 --> 00:23:30.432
  • Now stay right there.
  • 00:23:30.432 --> 00:23:31.933
  • I'll be back with more "pathway to victory" in just a moment.

  • When the stakes are high and the path forward isn't clear, how
  • 00:23:41.910 --> 00:23:45.413
  • Can you be confident you're following god's will?
  • 00:23:45.413 --> 00:23:48.116

  • 00:23:51.953 --> 00:23:55.490
  • How you can know with certainty the will of god in

  • Any situation.
  • 00:23:58.393 --> 00:23:59.794
  • Jeffress: one of the most frequently asked questions i
  • 00:23:59.794 --> 00:24:02.631
  • Receive as a pastor is: how can i know god's will for my life?
  • 00:24:02.631 --> 00:24:07.435
  • Too many believers are paralyzed by fear of making the wrong
  • 00:24:07.435 --> 00:24:11.139
  • Choice, but god hasn't left us guessing.
  • 00:24:11.139 --> 00:24:14.109
  • In my book, i reveal the biblical principles for
  • 00:24:14.109 --> 00:24:17.279
  • Recognizing god's voice and discerning god's will.

  • Jeffress: when god speaks to us, he does so more than just to
  • 00:24:39.000 --> 00:24:41.603
  • Give us courage and comfort to face our present situation.
  • 00:24:41.603 --> 00:24:45.607
  • He actually promises guidance, direction, to those who trust
  • 00:24:45.607 --> 00:24:50.145
  • In him.
  • 00:24:50.145 --> 00:24:51.479
  • Announcer: thank you for partnering with us to share
  • 00:24:51.479 --> 00:24:53.248

  • Your generosity will empower "pathway to victory" to speak
  • 00:24:56.785 --> 00:25:00.121
  • Bold biblical truth into your life and the lives of millions
  • 00:25:00.121 --> 00:25:04.059
  • Across the country and around the world.
  • 00:25:04.059 --> 00:25:06.294
  • Jeffress: the idea of submitting to a higher authority tends to
  • 00:25:08.663 --> 00:25:12.400
  • Go against our self-centered culture, but if we truly want to
  • 00:25:12.400 --> 00:25:16.638
  • Hear god's direction for our lives, we need to be willing
  • 00:25:16.638 --> 00:25:20.976
  • To receive it.
  • 00:25:20.976 --> 00:25:22.310
  • And sometimes that means obeying god even when we don't feel
  • 00:25:22.310 --> 00:25:26.114
  • Like it.
  • 00:25:26.114 --> 00:25:27.449
  • Next time we'll continue to look at three groups of people
  • 00:25:27.449 --> 00:25:30.251
  • To consult before making any major decision.
  • 00:25:30.251 --> 00:25:33.888
  • And i'll also share three very practical points that you can
  • 00:25:33.888 --> 00:25:37.659
  • Put to work right away.
  • 00:25:37.659 --> 00:25:39.961
  • Stay tuned for a preview of what's coming up next in our

  • Series, "how to make wise decisions."
  • 00:25:42.330 --> 00:25:46.601
  • Jeffress: if you are facing a decision, i don't care how much
  • 00:25:46.601 --> 00:25:50.071
  • You feel like god is leading you to do something or circumstances
  • 00:25:50.071 --> 00:25:54.142
  • Are conspiring to lead you to do something, if that something
  • 00:25:54.142 --> 00:25:57.879
  • Violates the clear spoken word of god, don't listen to it.
  • 00:25:57.879 --> 00:26:02.851
  • Obey what god has already said in his word.
  • 00:26:02.851 --> 00:26:06.321
  • All counsel must be measured against the word of god.
  • 00:26:06.321 --> 00:26:11.660
