  • I just want you to know, whatever your past,
  • 00:00:01.015 --> 00:00:03.250
  • Whatever your story, whatever you're living out
  • 00:00:03.250 --> 00:00:05.820
  • Right now, you are invited to the table.
  • 00:00:05.820 --> 00:00:09.290
  • Not just you.
  • 00:00:09.657 --> 00:00:10.791
  • Don't just get to sit at the kid's table with the lord.
  • 00:00:10.791 --> 00:00:13.260
  • You are invited to come and take your place
  • 00:00:13.260 --> 00:00:16.363
  • And let the tablecloth of grace cover you in
  • 00:00:16.363 --> 00:00:20.468
  • Jesus name.
  • 00:00:20.468 --> 00:00:24.672
  • Scripture is full of stories of grace.
  • 00:00:25.473 --> 00:00:28.075
  • But of all the stories of grace found in god's word.
  • 00:00:28.075 --> 00:00:31.312
  • The one apart, obviously, from the cross of christ
  • 00:00:31.312 --> 00:00:34.215
  • That moves me most, is found tucked deep
  • 00:00:34.215 --> 00:00:36.750
  • Into the heart of king david's story.
  • 00:00:36.750 --> 00:00:39.120
  • And honestly, it's kind of an obscure passage
  • 00:00:39.120 --> 00:00:41.822
  • About a man whose name i can barely pronounce.
  • 00:00:41.822 --> 00:00:45.092
  • His name is mephibosheth.
  • 00:00:45.092 --> 00:00:46.961
  • Well, the story is found in second samuel chapter nine,
  • 00:00:46.961 --> 00:00:50.264
  • And he is the only survivor of king saul's family.
  • 00:00:50.264 --> 00:00:54.001
  • After saul and jonathan have been killed in battle.
  • 00:00:54.001 --> 00:00:57.538
  • Now this seems barbaric to us.
  • 00:00:58.172 --> 00:01:00.007
  • But it was the custom in those days
  • 00:01:00.007 --> 00:01:01.942
  • That when a new king ascended the throne,
  • 00:01:01.942 --> 00:01:04.545
  • All the descendants of the previous king were slaughtered
  • 00:01:04.545 --> 00:01:08.115
  • To remove even the possibility of a revolt.
  • 00:01:08.115 --> 00:01:11.952
  • Well, jonathan, david's close friend, had asked david
  • 00:01:11.952 --> 00:01:15.689
  • To show grace to his family where none was expected.
  • 00:01:15.689 --> 00:01:19.793
  • And david said he would.
  • 00:01:19.793 --> 00:01:22.096
  • Not only had david made a promise to his beloved friend,
  • 00:01:22.096 --> 00:01:25.232
  • But he also made a promise
  • 00:01:25.232 --> 00:01:26.467
  • To saul johnson's father before he died.
  • 00:01:26.467 --> 00:01:30.104
  • This is what saul said to david.
  • 00:01:30.104 --> 00:01:32.106
  • Now i realize that you are surely going to be king,
  • 00:01:32.106 --> 00:01:35.276
  • And that the kingdom of israel will flourish under your rule.
  • 00:01:35.276 --> 00:01:38.646
  • Now swear to me by the lord that when that happens,
  • 00:01:38.646 --> 00:01:42.449
  • You will not kill my family and destroy my line of descendants.
  • 00:01:42.449 --> 00:01:47.721
  • This says, david promised this to saul with an oath.
  • 00:01:47.721 --> 00:01:51.992
  • I think it's interesting that saul would ask that of david,
  • 00:01:51.992 --> 00:01:54.595
  • Because david was a man of his word, for saul was not.
  • 00:01:54.595 --> 00:01:59.133
  • What could he do now to honor that promise?
  • 00:01:59.133 --> 00:02:01.902
  • Saul and jonathan were dead,
  • 00:02:01.902 --> 00:02:04.238
  • And as far as david knew, there were no absolutely
  • 00:02:04.238 --> 00:02:07.041
  • No survivors. and they're lying.
  • 00:02:07.041 --> 00:02:09.276
  • But still, he'd made a promise.
  • 00:02:09.276 --> 00:02:11.278
  • And so he determined to find out.
  • 00:02:11.278 --> 00:02:13.614
  • So he called for a man called ziba,
  • 00:02:13.614 --> 00:02:15.616
  • Who was one of saul's former servants.
  • 00:02:15.616 --> 00:02:17.718
  • And he asked him,
  • 00:02:17.718 --> 00:02:18.919
  • Do you know what anyone from saul's line who's still alive?
  • 00:02:18.919 --> 00:02:22.823
  • Well, he battled it.
  • 00:02:22.823 --> 00:02:23.991
  • Well, actually, one of jonathan's sons is still alive.
  • 00:02:23.991 --> 00:02:27.761
  • He's crippled in both feet.
  • 00:02:27.761 --> 00:02:30.864
  • I often wonder why he told him that detail.
  • 00:02:30.864 --> 00:02:33.901
  • Was he trying to let david know that this crippled man
  • 00:02:33.901 --> 00:02:36.704
  • Will not fit into your lovely palace?
  • 00:02:36.704 --> 00:02:40.407
  • Well, when you look at this man's life, have a chef's.
  • 00:02:40.407 --> 00:02:43.611
  • You can hardly pronounce his name.
  • 00:02:43.611 --> 00:02:45.112
  • People had suffered a lot over his lifetime.
  • 00:02:45.112 --> 00:02:48.849
  • And second samuel, chapter four, verse four.
  • 00:02:48.849 --> 00:02:51.385
  • We find out what happened to him.
  • 00:02:51.385 --> 00:02:53.220
  • He was just five years old when the report came from
  • 00:02:53.220 --> 00:02:56.323
  • Jezreel that saul and jonathan had been killed in battle.
  • 00:02:56.323 --> 00:03:00.661
  • Well, when the child's nurse heard the news, she knew
  • 00:03:00.661 --> 00:03:03.897
  • She had to pick him up and flee because he would be killed.
  • 00:03:03.897 --> 00:03:08.502
  • But as she hurried away, she dropped him
  • 00:03:08.502 --> 00:03:11.171
  • And he became crippled.
  • 00:03:11.171 --> 00:03:12.640
  • We don't know if she tripped or he struggled,
  • 00:03:12.640 --> 00:03:15.809
  • But he fell so hard that he broke his legs
  • 00:03:15.809 --> 00:03:18.646
  • And have been crippled ever since.
  • 00:03:18.646 --> 00:03:21.715
  • And the interesting thing about mephibosheth
  • 00:03:21.715 --> 00:03:23.984
  • He lived in a place called low debar,
  • 00:03:23.984 --> 00:03:26.754
  • Which actually translates as no pasture land.
  • 00:03:26.754 --> 00:03:31.225
  • So for years this man had been hidden away
  • 00:03:31.225 --> 00:03:34.995
  • In a graceless, colorless place
  • 00:03:34.995 --> 00:03:38.265
  • Until grace would come looking for him.
  • 00:03:38.265 --> 00:03:42.169
  • I can imagine what he must have thought when david's men
  • 00:03:42.169 --> 00:03:45.005
  • Knocked on the door that day.
  • 00:03:45.005 --> 00:03:47.241
  • Perhaps he'd spent years waiting for the other shoe to drop,
  • 00:03:47.241 --> 00:03:50.210
  • Waiting to be discovered that somebody had survived,
  • 00:03:50.210 --> 00:03:53.347
  • And now what he dreaded had come to pass.
  • 00:03:53.347 --> 00:03:56.283
  • But no, as he was brought and stood in front of the king,
  • 00:03:56.283 --> 00:04:01.121
  • King david soaked this crippled man to the skin in grace.
  • 00:04:01.121 --> 00:04:06.393
  • He told him, not only will your life be spared.
  • 00:04:06.393 --> 00:04:09.063
  • David told him that everything that used to belong
  • 00:04:09.063 --> 00:04:11.765
  • To your grandfather saul, would now be his.
  • 00:04:11.765 --> 00:04:15.235
  • But grace was even better than this.
  • 00:04:15.235 --> 00:04:18.839
  • Not only was he offered everything
  • 00:04:18.839 --> 00:04:20.507
  • That had belonged to saul,
  • 00:04:20.507 --> 00:04:22.076
  • He was offered a seat at king david's table.
  • 00:04:22.076 --> 00:04:26.313
  • He was welcomed home as family.
  • 00:04:26.313 --> 00:04:28.682
  • The tablecloth of grace covered his feet.
  • 00:04:29.550 --> 00:04:33.120
  • And that is the father's love.
  • 00:04:33.120 --> 00:04:36.290
  • Your son is.
  • 00:04:36.290 --> 00:04:37.324
  • We look at certain people and we think, well,
  • 00:04:37.324 --> 00:04:38.392
  • They have been favored by god.
  • 00:04:38.392 --> 00:04:39.660
  • Everything's gone well in their life.
  • 00:04:39.660 --> 00:04:41.195
  • Everything is great.
  • 00:04:41.195 --> 00:04:42.763
  • And maybe you look at your own life
  • 00:04:42.763 --> 00:04:44.698
  • Or your upbringing or of your family,
  • 00:04:44.698 --> 00:04:46.533
  • And you think, you know what?
  • 00:04:46.533 --> 00:04:47.968
  • I'm not as loved.
  • 00:04:47.968 --> 00:04:49.703
  • I just want you to know that's not.
  • 00:04:49.703 --> 00:04:51.271
  • That's not true.
  • 00:04:51.271 --> 00:04:52.606
  • God's grace invites every single one of us
  • 00:04:52.606 --> 00:04:55.843
  • To a seat at his family table.
  • 00:04:56.477 --> 00:04:58.946
  • You know, i was a girl who grew up with.
  • 00:04:58.946 --> 00:05:01.248
  • With no father.
  • 00:05:01.248 --> 00:05:02.216
  • We were pretty poor growing up.
  • 00:05:02.216 --> 00:05:04.385
  • We lived in housing provided by the government.
  • 00:05:04.385 --> 00:05:06.820
  • We had my brother, my sister and i were the only
  • 00:05:06.820 --> 00:05:09.356
  • Ones who got free school meals and free school uniforms.
  • 00:05:09.356 --> 00:05:13.093
  • But the amazing thing is, because i had a mom
  • 00:05:13.093 --> 00:05:16.697
  • Who loved jesus and who knew that
  • 00:05:16.697 --> 00:05:18.899
  • He was a father, that god is a father
  • 00:05:18.899 --> 00:05:21.001
  • Who cares for the widow and cares for the fatherless.
  • 00:05:21.001 --> 00:05:23.771
  • We knew that we were loved.
  • 00:05:23.771 --> 00:05:25.906
  • I just want you to know, whatever your past,
  • 00:05:25.906 --> 00:05:28.142
  • Whatever your story, whatever you're living out
  • 00:05:28.142 --> 00:05:30.711
  • Right now, you are invited to the table.
  • 00:05:30.711 --> 00:05:34.181
  • Not just you.
  • 00:05:34.548 --> 00:05:35.682
  • Don't just get to sit at the kid's table with the lord.
  • 00:05:35.682 --> 00:05:38.152
  • You are invited to come and take your place
  • 00:05:38.152 --> 00:05:41.255
  • And let the tablecloth of grace
  • 00:05:41.255 --> 00:05:44.158
  • Cover you in jesus name.
  • 00:05:44.158 --> 00:05:46.894
  • Let me pray for you.
  • 00:05:46.894 --> 00:05:48.529
  • Father, your grace is overwhelming.
  • 00:05:49.329 --> 00:05:51.565
  • It is amazing.
  • 00:05:51.565 --> 00:05:53.434
  • We understand why he wrote that hymn.
  • 00:05:53.434 --> 00:05:56.069
  • Because what other words do we have to describe?
  • 00:05:56.069 --> 00:05:59.306
  • The kind of grace that would welcome all of us to your table,
  • 00:05:59.306 --> 00:06:03.544
  • That would say, come as you are,
  • 00:06:03.544 --> 00:06:05.245
  • From the richest to the poorest, from those who feel the most
  • 00:06:05.245 --> 00:06:08.715
  • Gifted, to those who feel that they've been given very little.
  • 00:06:08.715 --> 00:06:12.152
  • But every single one of us is welcome to your table
  • 00:06:12.152 --> 00:06:16.623
  • And given a place and told welcome home,
  • 00:06:16.623 --> 00:06:20.194
  • You belong here.
  • 00:06:20.561 --> 00:06:23.230
  • Thank you.
  • 00:06:23.230 --> 00:06:24.364
  • In jesus name, amen.
  • 00:06:24.364 --> 00:06:24.364
