  • It's easy to look with our own eyes.
  • 00:00:01.014 --> 00:00:03.383
  • My prayer is
  • 00:00:03.383 --> 00:00:04.517
  • God would give us his eyes to see people differently,
  • 00:00:04.517 --> 00:00:07.487
  • And that simple acts of kindness would change
  • 00:00:07.487 --> 00:00:11.257
  • People's lives
  • 00:00:11.257 --> 00:00:16.396
  • Before
  • 00:00:16.629 --> 00:00:17.564
  • I went off to seminary when i was 18 or 19,
  • 00:00:17.564 --> 00:00:21.034
  • I had the summer at home in our little fishing
  • 00:00:21.034 --> 00:00:23.903
  • Village and scotland, and i wanted to do something.
  • 00:00:23.903 --> 00:00:26.439
  • I wanted to volunteer somewhere because i had like six weeks,
  • 00:00:26.439 --> 00:00:29.676
  • And so i decided to volunteer at a senior center.
  • 00:00:29.676 --> 00:00:33.580
  • It was a place where our senior citizens
  • 00:00:33.580 --> 00:00:36.483
  • Would come and have lunch and play games and just,
  • 00:00:36.483 --> 00:00:39.686
  • You know, have some time to be together.
  • 00:00:39.686 --> 00:00:41.955
  • So i volunteered and i would go every day
  • 00:00:41.955 --> 00:00:44.190
  • And i would help serve the meals
  • 00:00:44.190 --> 00:00:45.725
  • And bring coffees or just do anything
  • 00:00:45.725 --> 00:00:47.994
  • That anybody needed me to do.
  • 00:00:47.994 --> 00:00:49.562
  • But there was this one gentleman i just could not reach.
  • 00:00:49.562 --> 00:00:53.099
  • He would never whenever i called lunch,
  • 00:00:53.099 --> 00:00:55.001
  • He would never come to the table and sit with all the others.
  • 00:00:55.001 --> 00:00:57.770
  • He would sit with his back against the wall.
  • 00:00:57.770 --> 00:01:00.073
  • So every single day i would take him as lunch on a tray
  • 00:01:00.073 --> 00:01:03.676
  • And i would say, hey, here's your lunch.
  • 00:01:03.676 --> 00:01:06.045
  • I hope you enjoy it. he wouldn't make eye contact.
  • 00:01:06.045 --> 00:01:08.548
  • He wouldn't look up. he would say nothing.
  • 00:01:08.548 --> 00:01:10.450
  • So one day i thought, you know, i just have to try harder.
  • 00:01:10.450 --> 00:01:13.853
  • So i prayed about it that morning that i said, lord,
  • 00:01:13.853 --> 00:01:16.055
  • Would you help me to reach this man?
  • 00:01:16.055 --> 00:01:18.024
  • Because i don't know what's going on in his life.
  • 00:01:18.024 --> 00:01:20.393
  • And so i decided that day, after i brought him his lunch,
  • 00:01:20.393 --> 00:01:23.463
  • I would take another chair over and i would sit beside him.
  • 00:01:23.463 --> 00:01:26.232
  • So i gave him his lunch.
  • 00:01:26.232 --> 00:01:27.400
  • And then i dragged another chair over
  • 00:01:27.400 --> 00:01:28.801
  • And i sat down beside him, and he did not look thrilled.
  • 00:01:28.801 --> 00:01:31.838
  • But i said to him, hi,
  • 00:01:31.838 --> 00:01:33.907
  • My name is sheila and i was born and raised here in ayr.
  • 00:01:33.907 --> 00:01:37.510
  • But one day i'm going to go to america.
  • 00:01:37.510 --> 00:01:40.747
  • While his face lit up as if he had just won the lottery
  • 00:01:40.747 --> 00:01:45.451
  • And he said to me, i'm from america, i'm from america.
  • 00:01:45.451 --> 00:01:49.255
  • I'm miss america.
  • 00:01:49.255 --> 00:01:50.456
  • And then he said, if you ever go to america,
  • 00:01:50.456 --> 00:01:53.660
  • If you ever get to poughkeepsie,
  • 00:01:53.660 --> 00:01:55.528
  • Will you tell him that george said hi?
  • 00:01:55.528 --> 00:01:58.364
  • I had no idea
  • 00:01:58.364 --> 00:01:59.465
  • What poughkeepsie was, but i promised him i would.
  • 00:01:59.465 --> 00:02:02.435
  • But here's the lesson that i learned from that.
  • 00:02:02.435 --> 00:02:04.871
  • Because it changed him.
  • 00:02:04.871 --> 00:02:06.806
  • Because every single day after that, now we were
  • 00:02:06.806 --> 00:02:10.610
  • We didn't have a lot of money when i was growing up.
  • 00:02:10.610 --> 00:02:12.612
  • We didn't have a car.
  • 00:02:12.612 --> 00:02:13.813
  • I had to take a bus to get to the senior center
  • 00:02:13.813 --> 00:02:16.149
  • And some days off the bus was late.
  • 00:02:16.149 --> 00:02:17.717
  • I would be a little bit late,
  • 00:02:17.717 --> 00:02:19.352
  • But the minute i walked through those doors, the minute
  • 00:02:19.352 --> 00:02:22.355
  • George saw me, no matter if anybody else was talking,
  • 00:02:22.355 --> 00:02:26.192
  • His face lit up and he would call out.
  • 00:02:26.192 --> 00:02:28.528
  • She came!
  • 00:02:28.528 --> 00:02:30.430
  • Just a little bit of kindness
  • 00:02:31.064 --> 00:02:33.666
  • Had unlocked what was going on, because here's
  • 00:02:33.666 --> 00:02:36.169
  • What it looked like to me.
  • 00:02:36.169 --> 00:02:37.937
  • To me, it looked like he was just
  • 00:02:37.937 --> 00:02:39.372
  • Somebody who wanted no relationship with anyone,
  • 00:02:39.372 --> 00:02:42.075
  • Who just wanted to come in, get us food and leave.
  • 00:02:42.075 --> 00:02:45.278
  • I didn't see that.
  • 00:02:45.712 --> 00:02:46.613
  • He was actually just a really lonely man
  • 00:02:46.613 --> 00:02:48.581
  • Who missed his home, who missed his people.
  • 00:02:48.581 --> 00:02:52.585
  • And by the way, years later, i landed in poughkeepsie
  • 00:02:52.585 --> 00:02:57.223
  • And the very first thing i did when i got out of the airport
  • 00:02:57.223 --> 00:03:00.193
  • Was i yelled at the top of my lungs.
  • 00:03:00.193 --> 00:03:02.362
  • George said, hi,
  • 00:03:02.362 --> 00:03:05.031
  • But could you imagine the impact on our world
  • 00:03:05.031 --> 00:03:08.334
  • If we chose this year to see everyone we encounter
  • 00:03:08.334 --> 00:03:12.538
  • With god's eyes, not with what we see?
  • 00:03:12.538 --> 00:03:16.009
  • I love first corinthians chapter 13,
  • 00:03:16.009 --> 00:03:18.811
  • Particularly verses four through seven.
  • 00:03:19.612 --> 00:03:21.914
  • This is what it says.
  • 00:03:21.914 --> 00:03:23.182
  • Love is patient and kind.
  • 00:03:23.182 --> 00:03:26.486
  • Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or root.
  • 00:03:26.486 --> 00:03:31.157
  • It does not demand its own way.
  • 00:03:31.157 --> 00:03:33.493
  • It is not irritable and it keeps no record of
  • 00:03:33.493 --> 00:03:36.929
  • Being wronged, does not rejoice about injustice,
  • 00:03:36.929 --> 00:03:40.466
  • But rejoices whenever the truth wins out.
  • 00:03:40.466 --> 00:03:44.070
  • Love never gives up, never loses
  • 00:03:44.070 --> 00:03:47.307
  • Faith, is always hopeful
  • 00:03:47.307 --> 00:03:50.343
  • And endures to every circumstance.
  • 00:03:50.343 --> 00:03:54.047
  • I think that's one of the
  • 00:03:54.614 --> 00:03:55.882
  • Great privileges that you and i have as followers of jesus,
  • 00:03:55.882 --> 00:03:59.252
  • That we get to be part of the good news that maybe unlocks
  • 00:03:59.252 --> 00:04:03.356
  • What's going on in somebody's life.
  • 00:04:03.356 --> 00:04:05.558
  • Perhaps you'll bump into somebody today,
  • 00:04:05.558 --> 00:04:07.327
  • Maybe someone you work with, or just someone casually.
  • 00:04:07.327 --> 00:04:10.196
  • And on first impressions, it looks like maybe they want
  • 00:04:10.196 --> 00:04:14.067
  • Nothing to do with you.
  • 00:04:14.067 --> 00:04:15.301
  • Or they're they're in a bad place.
  • 00:04:15.301 --> 00:04:18.404
  • Ask god to give you eyes to see what's really going on.
  • 00:04:18.404 --> 00:04:21.541
  • You know, i've discovered when i.
  • 00:04:21.541 --> 00:04:23.176
  • I don't go around doing this all the time.
  • 00:04:23.176 --> 00:04:24.911
  • I try not to annoy people, but
  • 00:04:24.911 --> 00:04:26.679
  • But i do often ask people, can i pray for you?
  • 00:04:26.679 --> 00:04:29.749
  • I only once has a person
  • 00:04:30.249 --> 00:04:32.051
  • Ever said, no, i don't want you to pray for me.
  • 00:04:32.051 --> 00:04:34.220
  • I cannot tell you the number of times
  • 00:04:34.220 --> 00:04:36.189
  • That people have said, actually, that would be lovely.
  • 00:04:36.189 --> 00:04:39.225
  • You know, it's easy to look with our own eyes.
  • 00:04:39.225 --> 00:04:41.961
  • My prayer is god would give us his eyes
  • 00:04:41.961 --> 00:04:44.397
  • To see people differently, and that simple acts of kindness
  • 00:04:44.397 --> 00:04:49.335
  • Would change people's lives in jesus name.
  • 00:04:49.335 --> 00:04:52.372
  • Let me pray for you.
  • 00:04:52.805 --> 00:04:54.507
  • Father, i want to thank you
  • 00:04:55.108 --> 00:04:56.409
  • For your outrageous kindness that you've set on us.
  • 00:04:56.409 --> 00:05:00.980
  • Lord, we don't deserve any of it.
  • 00:05:00.980 --> 00:05:03.182
  • And yet you're constantly
  • 00:05:03.182 --> 00:05:04.984
  • Gracious and kind and merciful and loving.
  • 00:05:04.984 --> 00:05:08.988
  • And so, lord, we do ask for your help with that today.
  • 00:05:08.988 --> 00:05:12.225
  • Would you help us to see beyond what seems to be going on
  • 00:05:12.225 --> 00:05:15.261
  • In somebody's life, to what might actually be going on?
  • 00:05:15.261 --> 00:05:19.132
  • Help us to be part of the good news on this earth, lord.
  • 00:05:19.132 --> 00:05:23.736
  • Help us to be part of those who bring your love
  • 00:05:23.736 --> 00:05:26.606
  • And your joy and your peace and your grace.
  • 00:05:26.606 --> 00:05:30.176
  • And we ask it all in jesus name.
  • 00:05:30.176 --> 00:05:33.713
  • Amen.
  • 00:05:33.946 --> 00:05:33.946
