  • And a trial was convinced.
  • 00:03:37.630 --> 00:03:40.566
  • First of all, there's a trial before somebody named annas.
  • 00:03:40.566 --> 00:03:45.271
  • Annas was the high priest who was recognized by the jews, and

  • Said in short, "i've been around for 3 1/2 years, and i have
  • 00:04:00.486 --> 00:04:04.324
  • Taught all over these grounds, all over galilee, judea,

  • To caiaphas.
  • 00:04:23.976 --> 00:04:25.678
  • Caiaphas was the high priest, a sadducees, who ruled over

  • The sanhedrin.
  • 00:04:44.097 --> 00:04:45.698

  • It was being stoned to death.
  • 00:05:14.794 --> 00:05:18.231
  • And therefore, we see in the questioning of annas, then the
  • 00:05:18.231 --> 00:05:22.301
  • Question of caiaphas, then caiaphas in the night took him
  • 00:05:22.301 --> 00:05:25.505
  • Before the supreme court, the sanhedrin, and then early in the
  • 00:05:25.505 --> 00:05:29.208
  • Morning, to legitimize at least a little bit of the trial, they
  • 00:05:29.208 --> 00:05:33.379
  • Took him before the sanhedrin, and jesus admitted that he was
  • 00:05:33.379 --> 00:05:37.417
  • Indeed the christ, the son of god, and they said, "blasphemy
  • 00:05:37.417 --> 00:05:41.053
  • By his own lips, blasphemy."
  • 00:05:41.053 --> 00:05:44.357
  • And certainly by jewish standards it was, but they had
  • 00:05:44.357 --> 00:05:49.562
  • A problem.
  • 00:05:49.562 --> 00:05:51.397
  • Now, understand in john chapter number 11 that caiaphas had
  • 00:05:51.397 --> 00:05:56.102
  • Already dealt with the leadership of israel, and they
  • 00:05:56.102 --> 00:05:59.505

  • 00:05:59.505 --> 00:06:04.110
  • They'd already decided that.
  • 00:06:04.110 --> 00:06:05.711
  • The decision had already been rendered before they ever
  • 00:06:05.711 --> 00:06:08.047
  • Started the trial, and his rationale was--this is after he
  • 00:06:08.047 --> 00:06:12.552
  • Brought lazarus back to life-- "man, everybody's gonna
  • 00:06:12.552 --> 00:06:16.189
  • Follow him.
  • 00:06:16.189 --> 00:06:17.523
  • We're gonna lose our position of power, and for the sake
  • 00:06:17.523 --> 00:06:20.626
  • Of the people."
  • 00:06:20.626 --> 00:06:21.961
  • Isn't that something?
  • 00:06:21.961 --> 00:06:23.296
  • "he must be killed.
  • 00:06:23.296 --> 00:06:24.630
  • For the sake of the people, he must be killed," so the verdict
  • 00:06:24.630 --> 00:06:28.468
  • Was already rendered by the high priest, and now they're going
  • 00:06:28.468 --> 00:06:31.671
  • Through the motion of trying to have some kind of phony trial to
  • 00:06:31.671 --> 00:06:36.209
  • Legitimize the decision that had already been made, but they had
  • 00:06:36.209 --> 00:06:39.745
  • A problem.
  • 00:06:39.745 --> 00:06:41.314
  • The jews at this time could not exercise capital punishment.
  • 00:06:41.314 --> 00:06:46.919
  • That power had been taken away from them by the romans, so they
  • 00:06:46.919 --> 00:06:51.123
  • Had to bring pilate in, and then we have the roman trial
  • 00:06:51.123 --> 00:06:55.061
  • Of jesus.
  • 00:06:55.061 --> 00:06:56.395
  • We read about it in john, the latter part of john 18
  • 00:06:56.395 --> 00:07:00.600
  • And the first part of john 19, look at it.
  • 00:07:00.600 --> 00:07:03.836
  • This is the roman trial--and by the way, the charge of the
  • 00:07:03.836 --> 00:07:06.472
  • Romans was that he is an insurrectionist, he is a rebel,
  • 00:07:06.472 --> 00:07:11.177
  • He is inciting a revolution.
  • 00:07:11.177 --> 00:07:13.346
  • That's what the jews said about jesus.
  • 00:07:13.346 --> 00:07:16.115
  • Now, what was the punishment by roman law?
  • 00:07:16.115 --> 00:07:18.651
  • If someone was guilty of being a revolutionary, trying to
  • 00:07:18.651 --> 00:07:23.022
  • Overthrow the roman government, the punishment was death
  • 00:07:23.022 --> 00:07:26.259
  • By crucifixion.
  • 00:07:26.259 --> 00:07:28.895
  • So he goes before pilate, verse 28, chapter number 18 of john,
  • 00:07:28.895 --> 00:07:33.499
  • "then they led jesus from caiaphas into the praetorium,
  • 00:07:33.499 --> 00:07:36.869
  • And it was early; and they themselves did not enter into
  • 00:07:36.869 --> 00:07:40.139

  • Don't get into the legal procedure."
  • 00:08:11.404 --> 00:08:13.406

  • 00:08:13.406 --> 00:08:18.511
  • "take him yourselves, and judge him according to your law."
  • 00:08:18.511 --> 00:08:22.014

  • Verse 33, "therefore pilate entered into the praetorium,"
  • 00:08:35.561 --> 00:08:39.398
  • His palace there in jerusalem, "and summoned jesus and said to
  • 00:08:39.398 --> 00:08:43.202
  • Him, 'are you the king of the jews?'"
  • 00:08:43.202 --> 00:08:46.272
  • You see the charge?
  • 00:08:46.272 --> 00:08:47.873
  • The jews said he's trying to make himself king, and pilate
  • 00:08:47.873 --> 00:08:51.110
  • Said, "are you the king of the jews?"
  • 00:08:51.110 --> 00:08:53.913
  • Look how jesus answered, he said, "'are you saying this of
  • 00:08:53.913 --> 00:08:58.351
  • Your own initiative, or did others tell you about me?'
  • 00:08:58.351 --> 00:09:02.421
  • Pilate answered, 'i am not a jew am i? your own nation and the
  • 00:09:02.421 --> 00:09:06.692
  • Chief priests delivered you to me; what have you done?'
  • 00:09:06.692 --> 00:09:11.197
  • Jesus answered, 'my kingdom is not of this world.
  • 00:09:11.197 --> 00:09:14.700
  • If my kingdom were of the world, then my servants would be
  • 00:09:14.700 --> 00:09:17.536
  • Fighting so that i would not be handed over to the jews;
  • 00:09:17.536 --> 00:09:21.007
  • But as it is, my kingdom is not of this realm.'
  • 00:09:21.007 --> 00:09:25.011
  • Therefore pilate said to him, 'so you are a king?'
  • 00:09:25.011 --> 00:09:29.315
  • Jesus answered, 'you say correctly that i am a king.
  • 00:09:29.315 --> 00:09:33.886
  • For this i have been born, and for this i have come into
  • 00:09:33.886 --> 00:09:38.090
  • The world--'" listen to this-- "'to testify to the truth.
  • 00:09:38.090 --> 00:09:42.828
  • Everyone who is of the truth hears my voice.'"
  • 00:09:42.828 --> 00:09:47.800
  • What is jesus saying?
  • 00:09:47.800 --> 00:09:49.301
  • He's saying, "if you are interested in truth, you'll hear
  • 00:09:49.301 --> 00:09:54.173
  • My voice, and you will be an advocate of truth in your life."
  • 00:09:54.173 --> 00:09:59.178
  • And look at pilate, verse 38, "what is truth?"
  • 00:09:59.178 --> 00:10:07.153
  • The interesting thing is pilate was looking at truth with flesh
  • 00:10:07.153 --> 00:10:14.193
  • On right in front of him.
  • 00:10:14.193 --> 00:10:17.697
  • Jesus says, "i am the way," the path, "and i am the truth,
  • 00:10:17.697 --> 00:10:23.102
  • And i'm the life."
  • 00:10:23.102 --> 00:10:24.670

  • 00:10:55.901 --> 00:10:57.470

  • 00:10:59.805 --> 00:11:03.309
  • When he was on the mount of transfiguration, the father
  • 00:11:03.309 --> 00:11:05.678
  • Said, "he is superior to these other two prophets.
  • 00:11:05.678 --> 00:11:08.848
  • He is my son.
  • 00:11:08.848 --> 00:11:10.182
  • I'm proud of him."
  • 00:11:10.182 --> 00:11:12.384
  • God affirmed jesus and his purity, and in that he was
  • 00:11:12.384 --> 00:11:16.856
  • Indeed fleshed-out truth.
  • 00:11:16.856 --> 00:11:20.326
  • Well, you turn around, and what about those who knew him best,
  • 00:11:20.326 --> 00:11:22.561
  • His disciples, his buddies, his followers?
  • 00:11:22.561 --> 00:11:25.464
  • Over and over, they gave title to him about the lamb,
  • 00:11:25.464 --> 00:11:29.769
  • The spotless lamb.
  • 00:11:29.769 --> 00:11:31.103
  • They called him the righteous one, they called him the holy
  • 00:11:31.103 --> 00:11:33.305
  • One, they call him the pure one.
  • 00:11:33.305 --> 00:11:35.207
  • All of those who knew him best, they affirmed his life.
  • 00:11:35.207 --> 00:11:39.912
  • Well, what about his enemies?
  • 00:11:39.912 --> 00:11:41.914
  • When he was crucified, one of the soldiers who was crucifying
  • 00:11:41.914 --> 00:11:44.950
  • Him looked at him and said, "surely this is the son of god."
  • 00:11:44.950 --> 00:11:50.923
  • Even those who were looking for everything they could about what
  • 00:11:50.923 --> 00:11:54.326
  • He taught, how he lived, and what he did, his enemies here in
  • 00:11:54.326 --> 00:11:57.530
  • Our scripture, all they could accuse him of was being that he
  • 00:11:57.530 --> 00:12:00.900
  • Claimed to be the son of god, which we know that was actually
  • 00:12:00.900 --> 00:12:04.436
  • Factual in and of itself.
  • 00:12:04.436 --> 00:12:07.306
  • And so you see his enemies come at him, his friends come at him,
  • 00:12:07.306 --> 00:12:11.110
  • The heavenly father come at him in every area, and even pilate,
  • 00:12:11.110 --> 00:12:14.947
  • As we'll study.
  • 00:12:14.947 --> 00:12:16.315
  • Three times in this 19th chapter of john, pilate examined him,
  • 00:12:16.315 --> 00:12:21.687
  • And every time, he said, "i find no fault in him."
  • 00:12:21.687 --> 00:12:28.294
  • So we see that pilate said, "what is truth?"
  • 00:12:28.294 --> 00:12:31.330
  • Not recognizing that he was seeing truth lived out and
  • 00:12:31.330 --> 00:12:35.501
  • Embodied right in front of him, this jesus of nazareth.
  • 00:12:35.501 --> 00:12:41.774
  • Then look how pilate handles this.
  • 00:12:41.774 --> 00:12:44.944
  • You're gonna see pilate is the guy who i call spend a lot
  • 00:12:44.944 --> 00:12:48.013
  • Of time washing his hands.
  • 00:12:48.013 --> 00:12:50.115
  • When i was a boy, my mother would say,
  • 00:12:50.115 --> 00:12:51.784
  • "edwin, did you wash your hands?
  • 00:12:51.784 --> 00:12:54.019
  • Did you wash your hands?"
  • 00:12:54.019 --> 00:12:55.754
  • Wherever i would do, i would come in, i would go out.
  • 00:12:55.754 --> 00:12:58.290
  • Certainly before i would eat, i was always asked, "did you wash
  • 00:12:58.290 --> 00:13:01.894
  • Your hands?
  • 00:13:01.894 --> 00:13:03.229
  • Did you wash your hands?"
  • 00:13:03.229 --> 00:13:04.563
  • Pilate is phi beta kappa on hand-washing.
  • 00:13:04.563 --> 00:13:09.635
  • His whole agenda here as he decided what to do with jesus,
  • 00:13:09.635 --> 00:13:15.074
  • He washed his hands in every single occasion.
  • 00:13:15.074 --> 00:13:18.410
  • Look at it in verse 33, "therefore pilate entered again
  • 00:13:18.410 --> 00:13:22.114
  • Into the praetorium, and summoned jesus--"
  • 00:13:22.114 --> 00:13:24.383
  • Then we have all of this questioning.
  • 00:13:24.383 --> 00:13:27.386
  • Look at verse 38, pilate said, "'what is truth?'
  • 00:13:27.386 --> 00:13:30.289
  • And when he had said this, he went out--" pilate--
  • 00:13:30.289 --> 00:13:33.125
  • Before all the jews and the people.
  • 00:13:33.125 --> 00:13:35.094
  • He said, "i find no guilt in him--" verse 39--
  • 00:13:35.094 --> 00:13:39.331
  • "but you have a custom," he said.
  • 00:13:39.331 --> 00:13:41.300
  • Now, what is he doing here?
  • 00:13:41.300 --> 00:13:42.735
  • First of all, when they brought him to him, he said,
  • 00:13:42.735 --> 00:13:45.604
  • "i wash my hands of jesus.
  • 00:13:45.604 --> 00:13:47.740
  • You know, this is not my concern.
  • 00:13:47.740 --> 00:13:49.074
  • You jews decide.
  • 00:13:49.074 --> 00:13:50.409
  • You have charge against him, you handle it."
  • 00:13:50.409 --> 00:13:52.511
  • He said, "i wash my hands.
  • 00:13:52.511 --> 00:13:54.580
  • He's not a part of my problem."
  • 00:13:54.580 --> 00:13:56.515
  • And then he comes in second place,
  • 00:13:56.515 --> 00:13:58.150
  • And he tries to lateral off this.
  • 00:13:58.150 --> 00:14:01.387
  • He said, "i'm gonna be neutral.
  • 00:14:01.387 --> 00:14:02.721
  • As far as what to do with jesus, i find no guilt in him, but i'm
  • 00:14:02.721 --> 00:14:05.324
  • Gonna be a neutral."
  • 00:14:05.324 --> 00:14:06.659
  • And so, though it's not recorded in john, they mentioned that
  • 00:14:06.659 --> 00:14:09.995
  • Jesus from galilee, and pilate said, "ah-ha, ho-ho,
  • 00:14:09.995 --> 00:14:13.799
  • I've got a way out."
  • 00:14:13.799 --> 00:14:15.567
  • Herod, king herod, is in charge of galilee,
  • 00:14:15.567 --> 00:14:18.704
  • And he happens to be in town.
  • 00:14:18.704 --> 00:14:21.206
  • He's in jerusalem.
  • 00:14:21.206 --> 00:14:22.541
  • So they sent jesus before herod, and herod said, "i've been
  • 00:14:22.541 --> 00:14:25.010
  • Looking forward to meeting you.
  • 00:14:25.010 --> 00:14:27.446
  • I've looked forward.
  • 00:14:27.446 --> 00:14:28.781
  • I've heard about the signs or miracles you perform.
  • 00:14:28.781 --> 00:14:30.649
  • Come, jesus, do a little trick here.
  • 00:14:30.649 --> 00:14:33.385
  • Let's have a little magic.
  • 00:14:33.385 --> 00:14:34.720
  • We need some entertainment in our court."
  • 00:14:34.720 --> 00:14:36.455
  • And jesus didn't say a word to herod.
  • 00:14:36.455 --> 00:14:39.158
  • This is the same herod antipas who beheaded john the baptist.
  • 00:14:39.158 --> 00:14:43.329
  • Jesus didn't say a word, so herod said, "you know, he's not
  • 00:14:43.329 --> 00:14:46.765
  • Any fun.
  • 00:14:46.765 --> 00:14:48.100
  • He's not going to perform.
  • 00:14:48.100 --> 00:14:49.435
  • Put a purple robe on him and send him back, back to pilate."
  • 00:14:49.435 --> 00:14:53.672
  • Can you imagine pilate sitting there eating breakfast?
  • 00:14:53.672 --> 00:14:56.675
  • It's still mid-morning.
  • 00:14:56.675 --> 00:14:58.243
  • He said, "phew, boy, i was sure shrewd.
  • 00:14:58.243 --> 00:15:00.579
  • You know, i just take a position of neutrality here," and here
  • 00:15:00.579 --> 00:15:03.816
  • They come bringing jesus back, bringing jesus back, and then he
  • 00:15:03.816 --> 00:15:09.321
  • Has the idea, he said, "you know there's a tradition that someone
  • 00:15:09.321 --> 00:15:13.092
  • Can be released in passover, and we have over there in the tower
  • 00:15:13.092 --> 00:15:17.796
  • Of antonio, right about 1500 feet from me, the most infamous
  • 00:15:17.796 --> 00:15:23.202
  • Prisoner we've got in a long time, a guy named barabbas."
  • 00:15:23.202 --> 00:15:27.840
  • And barabbas is a robber, he's a murderer, he's a revolutionary.
  • 00:15:27.840 --> 00:15:31.977
  • You know, the choice is at passover the people can release
  • 00:15:31.977 --> 00:15:36.081
  • One person, so pilate went out with this brilliant idea proving
  • 00:15:36.081 --> 00:15:41.286
  • His neutrality about jesus and said, "look, i release to you
  • 00:15:41.286 --> 00:15:45.057
  • Barabbas, i release to you jesus: you choose."
  • 00:15:45.057 --> 00:15:49.528
  • And they said, "who do you want: barabbas or jesus?"
  • 00:15:49.528 --> 00:15:51.930
  • That he was confident they would take jesus,
  • 00:15:51.930 --> 00:15:55.234
  • But they said, "barabbas!"
  • 00:15:55.234 --> 00:15:59.338
  • Pilate was stunned.
  • 00:15:59.338 --> 00:16:02.207
  • Now he had to release barabbas to them, and he said, "well,
  • 00:16:02.207 --> 00:16:05.911
  • What do you want me to do with jesus?"
  • 00:16:05.911 --> 00:16:08.547
  • And they said, "crucify him, crucify him."
  • 00:16:08.547 --> 00:16:13.385
  • Now, a little subset here, can you imagine barabbas there in
  • 00:16:13.385 --> 00:16:17.790
  • The prison hearing all of this about 1500 feet away, and
  • 00:16:17.790 --> 00:16:22.294
  • What did he hear?
  • 00:16:22.294 --> 00:16:23.629
  • His name, "barabbas!"
  • 00:16:23.629 --> 00:16:24.963
  • All the crowd.
  • 00:16:24.963 --> 00:16:26.298
  • Then what did he hear?
  • 00:16:26.298 --> 00:16:27.633
  • "crucify him."
  • 00:16:27.633 --> 00:16:28.967
  • Then what did he hear?
  • 00:16:28.967 --> 00:16:30.302
  • "crucify him."
  • 00:16:30.302 --> 00:16:31.637
  • Then what did he hear?
  • 00:16:31.637 --> 00:16:32.971
  • "may his blood be on our hands," said the people.
  • 00:16:32.971 --> 00:16:35.307
  • So barabbas said, "it's bad enough i'm gonna be crucified,
  • 00:16:35.307 --> 00:16:38.610
  • But look at all the people," but the guard came in and said
  • 00:16:38.610 --> 00:16:41.413
  • To barabbas, "you've been set free."
  • 00:16:41.413 --> 00:16:46.752
  • The cross of barabbas had already been constructed,
  • 00:16:46.752 --> 00:16:49.822
  • And i think jesus died on that cross.
  • 00:16:49.822 --> 00:16:52.791
  • No better example in the bible than how jesus died on a cross
  • 00:16:52.791 --> 00:16:58.997
  • For you and for me, substitutionary atonement.
  • 00:16:58.997 --> 00:17:03.135
  • We deserve hell.
  • 00:17:03.135 --> 00:17:04.937
  • Jesus took hell on him, so what is left for you and me but for
  • 00:17:04.937 --> 00:17:09.241
  • Go to heaven?
  • 00:17:09.241 --> 00:17:11.143
  • So, this is barabbas, and now we see he keeps on washing
  • 00:17:11.143 --> 00:17:16.048
  • His hands.
  • 00:17:16.048 --> 00:17:17.382
  • He decided, "well, you know--" he had nothing to do with him.
  • 00:17:17.382 --> 00:17:20.819
  • He tried to run in herod, he tried to run in barabbas, and
  • 00:17:20.819 --> 00:17:24.723
  • All of a sudden he's got jesus on his hands, and then he
  • 00:17:24.723 --> 00:17:27.392
  • Compromises by having jesus scourged.
  • 00:17:27.392 --> 00:17:30.562
  • Look at chapter 19, "pilate then took jesus and scourged him--"
  • 00:17:30.562 --> 00:17:35.234
  • And by the way, scourging many times--
  • 00:17:35.234 --> 00:17:37.870
  • Most of the time, in fact--
  • 00:17:37.870 --> 00:17:39.705
  • Historians tell us, led to death.
  • 00:17:39.705 --> 00:17:42.040
  • They would whip them with whips with bone and with pieces of
  • 00:17:42.040 --> 00:17:46.612
  • Iron in it, and they would lacerate their back and
  • 00:17:46.612 --> 00:17:48.847
  • Their body.
  • 00:17:48.847 --> 00:17:50.182
  • He was beaten, he was slapped, perhaps beyond even recognition.
  • 00:17:50.182 --> 00:17:54.686
  • His face, his body was totally obliterated.
  • 00:17:54.686 --> 00:17:57.523
  • And then look what pilate did, pilate came out again and said
  • 00:17:57.523 --> 00:18:01.160
  • To them, "behold, i am bringing him out to you
  • 00:18:01.160 --> 00:18:03.395
  • So that you may know--"
  • 00:18:03.395 --> 00:18:04.863
  • He says he's guilty, he doesn't have any guilt,
  • 00:18:04.863 --> 00:18:06.398
  • He's guiltless.
  • 00:18:06.398 --> 00:18:07.900
  • Verse 5, "jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns
  • 00:18:07.900 --> 00:18:11.803
  • And the purple robe."
  • 00:18:11.803 --> 00:18:13.639
  • Pilate said ecce homo.
  • 00:18:13.639 --> 00:18:14.973
  • Behold, the man!
  • 00:18:14.973 --> 00:18:16.308
  • What was he doing?
  • 00:18:16.308 --> 00:18:17.643
  • He was saying, "look, i find no guilt in him.
  • 00:18:17.643 --> 00:18:20.512
  • There's no reason to crucify him, and i want you to look what
  • 00:18:20.512 --> 00:18:23.248
  • We've done to him.
  • 00:18:23.248 --> 00:18:24.583
  • He'd been beaten, he's been slapped, he's been whipped to
  • 00:18:24.583 --> 00:18:26.818
  • The inch of his life.
  • 00:18:26.818 --> 00:18:28.153
  • Look at him, behold the man."
  • 00:18:28.153 --> 00:18:31.423
  • What do you wanna do with him?
  • 00:18:31.423 --> 00:18:32.758
  • And they said, "crucify him."
  • 00:18:32.758 --> 00:18:37.129
  • He tried compromise.
  • 00:18:37.129 --> 00:18:40.566
  • "just a little bit, beat him up.
  • 00:18:40.566 --> 00:18:41.900
  • He's guiltless, but beat him up.
  • 00:18:41.900 --> 00:18:43.702
  • Maybe we'll have some compassion."
  • 00:18:43.702 --> 00:18:45.237
  • "crucify him," they said.
  • 00:18:45.237 --> 00:18:48.273
  • And look, finally, in chapter-- in verse 10, "so pilate said to
  • 00:18:48.273 --> 00:18:51.877
  • Him 'you do not speak to me?
  • 00:18:51.877 --> 00:18:53.679
  • Do you not know--'" referring to jesus--
  • 00:18:53.679 --> 00:18:55.514
  • "'i have authority to release you,
  • 00:18:55.514 --> 00:18:57.783
  • And i have authority to crucify you?'
  • 00:18:57.783 --> 00:19:00.619
  • Jesus answered, 'you would have no authority over me
  • 00:19:00.619 --> 00:19:04.590
  • Unless it had been given to you from above.'"
  • 00:19:04.590 --> 00:19:08.193
  • Remember, he'd already said, "my kingdom is from above.
  • 00:19:08.193 --> 00:19:10.395
  • My kingdom is not of this earth.
  • 00:19:10.395 --> 00:19:12.130
  • My kingdom is based on truth.
  • 00:19:12.130 --> 00:19:14.032
  • For this reason, he who delivered me to you has the
  • 00:19:14.032 --> 00:19:18.403
  • Greater sin," and another gospel tell us that pilate's wife,
  • 00:19:18.403 --> 00:19:22.841
  • Claudius, who evidently was some kind of religious person, told
  • 00:19:22.841 --> 00:19:27.879
  • Him she had a dream, and he has to have nothing to do
  • 00:19:27.879 --> 00:19:31.049
  • With jesus.
  • 00:19:31.049 --> 00:19:32.384
  • By the way, how did pilate get his position of authority
  • 00:19:32.384 --> 00:19:35.554
  • In judea?
  • 00:19:35.554 --> 00:19:37.222
  • I'll tell you, it's because he married claudius.
  • 00:19:37.222 --> 00:19:39.491
  • Claudius was a great-great granddaughter of one of the
  • 00:19:39.491 --> 00:19:44.496
  • Roman emperors, probably augustus.
  • 00:19:44.496 --> 00:19:47.599
  • Pilate was italian.
  • 00:19:47.599 --> 00:19:50.002
  • You see, the best decision you ever made was when he said,
  • 00:19:50.002 --> 00:19:52.471
  • "i do," and that's how he got this position,
  • 00:19:52.471 --> 00:19:56.475
  • So his wife certainly had great influence on it
  • 00:19:56.475 --> 00:19:59.244
  • And warned him about jesus.
  • 00:19:59.244 --> 00:20:01.647
  • In verse 12, "as a result of this pilate made efforts
  • 00:20:01.647 --> 00:20:04.683
  • To release him."
  • 00:20:04.683 --> 00:20:06.018
  • He'd already said not guilty, not guilty, no guilt in him, now
  • 00:20:06.018 --> 00:20:09.588
  • He made even further evidence to release jesus.
  • 00:20:09.588 --> 00:20:13.225
  • "but the jews cried out saying, 'if you release this man, you
  • 00:20:13.225 --> 00:20:17.729
  • Are no friend of caesar; everyone who makes him out to be
  • 00:20:17.729 --> 00:20:21.099
  • A king opposes caesar,' therefore when pilate heard
  • 00:20:21.099 --> 00:20:27.172
  • These words, he brought jesus out, and sat down the judgment
  • 00:20:27.172 --> 00:20:32.477
  • Seat at a place called the pavement."
  • 00:20:32.477 --> 00:20:34.513
  • Verse 14, "now it was a day of preparation for the passover; it
  • 00:20:34.513 --> 00:20:38.884
  • Was about the sixth hour.
  • 00:20:38.884 --> 00:20:40.752
  • And he said to the jews, 'behold, your king!'"
  • 00:20:40.752 --> 00:20:43.121
  • Verse 15, "so they cried out, 'away with him, away with him,
  • 00:20:43.121 --> 00:20:47.225
  • Crucify him!'
  • 00:20:47.225 --> 00:20:48.760
  • Pilate said to them, 'shall i crucify your king?'
  • 00:20:48.760 --> 00:20:52.064
  • The chief priests answered, 'we have no king but caesar.'
  • 00:20:52.064 --> 00:20:56.702
  • So he then handed him over to them to be crucified."
  • 00:20:56.702 --> 00:21:00.772
  • You see the final choice: christ or caesar.
  • 00:21:00.772 --> 00:21:08.580
  • Christ or caesar?
  • 00:21:08.580 --> 00:21:11.817
  • Ladies and gentlemen, we make that choice ourselves every
  • 00:21:11.817 --> 00:21:17.255
  • Single day in which we live, and so many of us, we spend all of
  • 00:21:17.255 --> 00:21:23.095
  • Our time washing our hands.
  • 00:21:23.095 --> 00:21:24.963
  • "you know, that's no-- not in my court,
  • 00:21:24.963 --> 00:21:27.299
  • Have no problem there."
  • 00:21:27.299 --> 00:21:29.634
  • Oh, we go and say, "you know, i'm gonna be neutral on this.
  • 00:21:29.634 --> 00:21:32.037
  • It's too controversial.
  • 00:21:32.037 --> 00:21:33.372
  • I'm just gonna be neutral about it."
  • 00:21:33.372 --> 00:21:34.706
  • That's what pilate did, "i'm gonna be neutral about jesus."
  • 00:21:34.706 --> 00:21:37.776
  • Or we could say, "i'm gonna compromise a little bit.
  • 00:21:37.776 --> 00:21:39.811
  • I'm gonna go along.
  • 00:21:39.811 --> 00:21:41.146
  • And that gullible part of our brain speaks to that irrational
  • 00:21:41.146 --> 00:21:45.050
  • Part of our brain, speaks to that perdition part of our
  • 00:21:45.050 --> 00:21:48.220
  • Brain, and then speaks to the reason part of our brain.
  • 00:21:48.220 --> 00:21:50.922
  • We say, "well, i'm gonna take the philosophy that--"
  • 00:21:50.922 --> 00:21:53.892
  • Sam rayburn, speaker of the house, from texas was asked by
  • 00:21:53.892 --> 00:22:00.532
  • Young john kennedy when he first was elected to congress.
  • 00:22:00.532 --> 00:22:04.102
  • "how do you make it up in washington?"
  • 00:22:04.102 --> 00:22:07.305
  • Mr. sam said, "the way you get along is to go along.
  • 00:22:07.305 --> 00:22:13.645
  • Way you get along is to go along."
  • 00:22:13.645 --> 00:22:17.315
  • A lot of us who go by the name of christian have adopted the
  • 00:22:17.315 --> 00:22:21.420
  • Same philosophy that mr. sam advocated to young john kennedy
  • 00:22:21.420 --> 00:22:26.425
  • And the same philosophy that pilate had
  • 00:22:26.425 --> 00:22:28.794
  • As he dealt with jesus.
  • 00:22:28.794 --> 00:22:30.462
  • The choice is always christ or caesar,
  • 00:22:30.462 --> 00:22:34.399
  • Christ or caesar.
  • 00:22:34.399 --> 00:22:37.035
  • You say, "well, if i stand up and i do this, and i do that,
  • 00:22:37.035 --> 00:22:40.739
  • Man, i'll be in trouble."
  • 00:22:40.739 --> 00:22:42.073
  • In my office, let us say for example, here's a man who
  • 00:22:42.073 --> 00:22:47.078
  • Decides he's gonna marry another man, and we're gonna give office
  • 00:22:47.078 --> 00:22:51.983
  • Party for him, and i need to go to the wedding and reception.
  • 00:22:51.983 --> 00:22:55.320
  • Now, i don't agree with it, but i don't wanna cause any
  • 00:22:55.320 --> 00:22:57.789
  • Controversy here.
  • 00:22:57.789 --> 00:22:59.124
  • Let me tell you something, folks.
  • 00:22:59.124 --> 00:23:00.459
  • We as christians have to learn how to speak the truth and live
  • 00:23:00.459 --> 00:23:03.929
  • The truth in love.
  • 00:23:03.929 --> 00:23:05.363
  • It's gonna be expensive to do it.
  • 00:23:05.363 --> 00:23:07.966
  • [congregation applauding]
  • 00:23:07.966 --> 00:23:14.806
  • People come and say, "well, as christians,
  • 00:23:14.806 --> 00:23:18.176
  • We supposed to be lovers.
  • 00:23:18.176 --> 00:23:19.744
  • How is it that god can send somebody to hell?"
  • 00:23:19.744 --> 00:23:26.551
  • God, ladies and gentlemen, never sends anybody to hell.
  • 00:23:26.551 --> 00:23:32.557
  • In heaven, there can be no garbage.
  • 00:23:32.557 --> 00:23:37.963
  • No garbage can ever get into heaven, and long as there's
  • 00:23:37.963 --> 00:23:42.434
  • Garbage in your life or in my life, we cannot get into heaven,
  • 00:23:42.434 --> 00:23:48.607
  • Because garbage in your life and my life will be burned up.
  • 00:23:48.607 --> 00:23:52.310
  • That's what you do with garbage, but thank the lord that jesus is
  • 00:23:52.310 --> 00:23:59.050
  • A garbage collector.
  • 00:23:59.050 --> 00:24:01.386
  • Now, i say that reverently, and he comes and takes the garbage
  • 00:24:01.386 --> 00:24:06.558
  • Out of your life and out of my life, and then the results
  • 00:24:06.558 --> 00:24:14.399
  • Is heaven.
  • 00:24:14.399 --> 00:24:16.868
  • May we learn how not to be pilate but how to stand with
  • 00:24:16.868 --> 00:24:26.444
  • Family and friends on these moral issues that are as clear
  • 00:24:26.444 --> 00:24:31.082
  • As they can be.
  • 00:24:31.082 --> 00:24:33.285
  • We don't say, "i don't have anything to do with that."
  • 00:24:33.285 --> 00:24:37.289
  • We're just like, "i'm just gonna be neutral on this.
  • 00:24:37.289 --> 00:24:39.391
  • I'm just neutral.
  • 00:24:39.391 --> 00:24:40.725
  • I'm neutral on this."
  • 00:24:40.725 --> 00:24:42.427
  • Or we go and say, "well, i'm gonna compromise
  • 00:24:42.427 --> 00:24:44.029
  • A little bit on this."
  • 00:24:44.029 --> 00:24:46.398
  • Because the choice keeps coming back to you and to me, ladies
  • 00:24:46.398 --> 00:24:49.301
  • And gentlemen.
  • 00:24:49.301 --> 00:24:50.635
  • Everywhere we turn, everywhere you go, will it be christ
  • 00:24:50.635 --> 00:24:53.171
  • Or caesar?
  • 00:24:53.171 --> 00:24:55.440
  • And when we as christians begin to reverently and humbly choose
  • 00:24:55.440 --> 00:25:01.446
  • Christ, we'll change america, and we'll change the world.
  • 00:25:01.446 --> 00:25:08.153
  • Male announcer: in the middle of life's darkest storm, there's
  • 00:25:10.155 --> 00:25:12.123
  • Always the quiet promises of god that lie just beyond
  • 00:25:12.123 --> 00:25:14.726
  • The turbulence.
  • 00:25:14.726 --> 00:25:16.061
  • You can discover how to claim these promises in dr. young's
  • 00:25:16.061 --> 00:25:18.797
  • Book "living under the rainbow."
  • 00:25:18.797 --> 00:25:20.465
  • It's our gift to you with your support of the ministry
  • 00:25:20.465 --> 00:25:22.834
  • This month.
  • 00:25:22.834 --> 00:25:24.169
  • Dr. young: the rainbow is a comforting reminder of
  • 00:25:24.169 --> 00:25:26.237
  • God's promises.
  • 00:25:26.237 --> 00:25:27.706
  • Under the rainbow, our lives, families, and careers can become
  • 00:25:27.706 --> 00:25:31.142
  • What god designed them to be.
  • 00:25:31.142 --> 00:25:33.511
  • In my book "living under the rainbow," you will learn about
  • 00:25:33.511 --> 00:25:37.115
  • The key promises god has made to us in his word, the bible, and
  • 00:25:37.115 --> 00:25:42.520
  • We'll discover how we can claim them in our daily lives.
  • 00:25:42.520 --> 00:25:46.625
  • Applying these promises leads not only to daily victory but
  • 00:25:46.625 --> 00:25:51.296
  • Puts you and me on the path of a truly--life with significance.
  • 00:25:51.296 --> 00:25:58.770
  • Announcer: to get a copy of "living under the rainbow" for
  • 00:25:58.770 --> 00:26:00.772
  • Yourself or someone you love, call the number on your screen
  • 00:26:00.772 --> 00:26:03.675
  • Or go online at winningwalk.org.
  • 00:26:03.675 --> 00:26:06.378
  • Dr. young: pilate did everything he could to avoid
  • 00:26:07.712 --> 00:26:10.515
  • Passing judgment on jesus.
  • 00:26:10.515 --> 00:26:12.717
  • He tried to wash his hands of the responsibility.
  • 00:26:12.717 --> 00:26:15.587
  • Then he tried to pass the decision off to someone else.
  • 00:26:15.587 --> 00:26:19.257
  • And finally, he tried to please the crowd through compromise
  • 00:26:19.257 --> 00:26:23.061
  • And bargaining or delaying.
  • 00:26:23.061 --> 00:26:25.630
  • Does that sound like anybody you know?
  • 00:26:25.630 --> 00:26:28.366
  • Pilate's actions are similar to what many of us do when
  • 00:26:28.366 --> 00:26:31.936
  • Confronted with the truth in jesus christ.
  • 00:26:31.936 --> 00:26:35.674
  • We want to stay neutral, to put off indecision.
  • 00:26:35.674 --> 00:26:39.744
  • Listen, jesus is either lord of all or he's not lord at all.
  • 00:26:39.744 --> 00:26:49.354
  • If you've been living a life straddling the fence,
  • 00:26:49.354 --> 00:26:52.457
  • You know it gets really, really uncomfortable.
  • 00:26:52.457 --> 00:26:56.661
  • If you are ready right now to let jesus become lord and
  • 00:26:56.661 --> 00:27:01.366
  • Center of you life, new life, here's what you need to do: call
  • 00:27:01.366 --> 00:27:06.438
  • The number on your screen.
  • 00:27:06.438 --> 00:27:08.339
  • We have godly men and women who want to pray with you and
  • 00:27:08.339 --> 00:27:11.643
  • Introduce you to a new life in jesus christ.
  • 00:27:11.643 --> 00:27:15.380
  • Call right now and let me personally thank you for
  • 00:27:15.380 --> 00:27:18.349
  • Watching today and make plans to tune in next time as we take
  • 00:27:18.349 --> 00:27:21.720
  • Another exciting step on "the winning walk" with jesus christ.
  • 00:27:21.720 --> 00:27:28.093
