  • Included in the documents that make up what we call the bible.
  • 00:03:52.483 --> 00:03:56.554
  • So he starts off by detailing jesus's birth, then as we said

  • In part 2, then he introduces us to the warm up act, john the
  • 00:03:59.757 --> 00:04:03.761
  • Baptist, and then he gives us a summary of jesus's entire
  • 00:04:03.761 --> 00:04:07.665
  • Life mission.
  • 00:04:07.665 --> 00:04:09.000
  • He said that jesus said this: "i must proclaim, i must proclaim
  • 00:04:09.000 --> 00:04:12.970
  • The good news.
  • 00:04:12.970 --> 00:04:14.539

  • I was sent."
  • 00:04:18.343 --> 00:04:19.677
  • So luke's like, here's jesus's mission statement: to proclaim
  • 00:04:19.677 --> 00:04:22.447
  • The good news of the kingdom of god and the whole idea of the

  • "'teacher,' he said, 'what must i do to inherit eternal life?'"

  • Now, eternal life in the first century judeans,
  • 00:07:09.013 --> 00:07:12.583
  • What he's asking is how do i know i get to participate in
  • 00:07:12.583 --> 00:07:15.753
  • God's future kingdom?
  • 00:07:15.753 --> 00:07:17.288
  • Now he's testing jesus, but he's also genuinely curious because
  • 00:07:17.288 --> 00:07:21.292
  • The answer to the question, how do you reserve a seat in god's
  • 00:07:21.292 --> 00:07:23.661
  • Future kingdom, wasn't all that clear from the law and
  • 00:07:23.661 --> 00:07:27.899
  • The prophets.
  • 00:07:27.899 --> 00:07:29.233
  • But jesus is smart and he knows that this is a test, and he
  • 00:07:29.233 --> 00:07:31.302
  • Knows that there's a question behind the question.
  • 00:07:31.302 --> 00:07:33.437
  • So jesus did what jesus does, he responds with a question.
  • 00:07:33.437 --> 00:07:36.774
  • So he says, "well, you're a lawyer.
  • 00:07:36.774 --> 00:07:39.877
  • What is written in the law?
  • 00:07:39.877 --> 00:07:42.547
  • How do you read it?
  • 00:07:42.547 --> 00:07:43.881
  • In other words, you tell us and you tell me, and we'll
  • 00:07:43.881 --> 00:07:45.483
  • Both know.
  • 00:07:45.483 --> 00:07:46.817
  • I mean, you're a lawyer, you should know this, right?"
  • 00:07:46.817 --> 00:07:48.986
  • So then the lawyer, as you may know, because it's such a
  • 00:07:48.986 --> 00:07:51.656
  • Familiar story, the lawyer recites back to jesus and
  • 00:07:51.656 --> 00:07:55.826
  • Jesus's audience what they were all taught as children is kind
  • 00:07:55.826 --> 00:07:59.263
  • Of the synopsis of the law that somehow should point the way to
  • 00:07:59.263 --> 00:08:02.934
  • Making sure you have a reserved seat in god's future kingdom.
  • 00:08:02.934 --> 00:08:06.304
  • So he says back to jesus, "well, this is how i read it.
  • 00:08:06.304 --> 00:08:09.774
  • This is what i think the answer is: love the lord your god with
  • 00:08:09.774 --> 00:08:13.244
  • All your heart, with all your soul and with all your strength
  • 00:08:13.244 --> 00:08:17.515
  • And with all your mind."
  • 00:08:17.515 --> 00:08:19.884
  • Now, this is an important part of the story.
  • 00:08:19.884 --> 00:08:22.219
  • Earlier, somebody had asked jesus a similar question, and
  • 00:08:22.219 --> 00:08:27.291
  • When jesus--and in that case, jesus actually recited this back
  • 00:08:27.291 --> 00:08:30.962
  • As the answer to the question asked, but he added a part that
  • 00:08:30.962 --> 00:08:34.165
  • We're all familiar with from leviticus 19:18.
  • 00:08:34.165 --> 00:08:37.735
  • He added the phrase, "and your neighbor as yourself."
  • 00:08:37.735 --> 00:08:41.238
  • Because somebody said, "hey, what's the
  • 00:08:41.238 --> 00:08:42.573
  • Greatest commandment?"
  • 00:08:42.573 --> 00:08:43.941
  • Jesus says, "well, there's not greatest commandment.
  • 00:08:43.941 --> 00:08:45.643
  • There's two greatest commandments, and they're
  • 00:08:45.643 --> 00:08:47.712
  • Actually the same commandment because they are actually
  • 00:08:47.712 --> 00:08:49.947
  • Different sides of the same coin."
  • 00:08:49.947 --> 00:08:52.116
  • Now this when jesus added, "and your neighbor as yourself," to
  • 00:08:52.116 --> 00:08:54.752
  • What was kind of a formulaic answer to the first century
  • 00:08:54.752 --> 00:08:58.522
  • Judeans, it caused quite a stir.
  • 00:08:58.522 --> 00:09:00.858
  • But the reason jesus added, "and your neighbor as yourself,"
  • 00:09:00.858 --> 00:09:04.228
  • Because he was making a point, and this is when luke wants to
  • 00:09:04.228 --> 00:09:06.998
  • Lean in and say, "and this is the point."
  • 00:09:06.998 --> 00:09:09.767
  • His point was that love for god is demonstrated by love
  • 00:09:09.767 --> 00:09:13.971
  • For others.
  • 00:09:13.971 --> 00:09:15.339
  • That love for god, this is jesus's--the point of
  • 00:09:15.339 --> 00:09:17.274
  • His ministry.
  • 00:09:17.274 --> 00:09:18.643
  • This is why it's good news.
  • 00:09:18.643 --> 00:09:19.977
  • This is why the reign and rule of god is not something to be
  • 00:09:19.977 --> 00:09:22.179
  • Resisted, that love for god is demonstrated by love for others.
  • 00:09:22.179 --> 00:09:27.251
  • Well anyway, apparently this lawyer was there when jesus
  • 00:09:27.251 --> 00:09:30.855
  • Added on, "and your neighbor as yourself."
  • 00:09:30.855 --> 00:09:33.424
  • So he recites kind of the sunday school answer to the question
  • 00:09:33.424 --> 00:09:36.160
  • Of: how to--how can i know for sure i'm gonna have
  • 00:09:36.160 --> 00:09:37.762
  • Eternal life?
  • 00:09:37.762 --> 00:09:39.130
  • Then he smiles at jesus and he adds, "and i've been listening,
  • 00:09:39.130 --> 00:09:43.200
  • Jesus, and love your neighbor as yourself."
  • 00:09:43.200 --> 00:09:46.037
  • Well, jesus is so happy, somebody is finally paying
  • 00:09:46.037 --> 00:09:48.806
  • Attention and starting to get this right?
  • 00:09:48.806 --> 00:09:50.574
  • And jesus looks at him and says something that jesus almost
  • 00:09:50.574 --> 00:09:53.411
  • Never says in the gospels.
  • 00:09:53.411 --> 00:09:55.346
  • "you have answered correctly," because mostly people answer
  • 00:09:55.346 --> 00:10:00.184
  • Jesus incorrectly.
  • 00:10:00.184 --> 00:10:01.652
  • So this is like, this guy's feeling pretty good
  • 00:10:01.652 --> 00:10:03.554
  • About himself.
  • 00:10:03.554 --> 00:10:04.922
  • Jesus replied, "do this.
  • 00:10:04.922 --> 00:10:07.591
  • Do this."
  • 00:10:07.591 --> 00:10:08.926
  • What's this?
  • 00:10:08.926 --> 00:10:10.294
  • This isn't the love of the lord your god, their heart, soul,
  • 00:10:10.294 --> 00:10:12.263
  • Mind and strength because you can't measure that.
  • 00:10:12.263 --> 00:10:13.698
  • You have no idea.
  • 00:10:13.698 --> 00:10:15.066
  • Do this is referring specifically to the last part,
  • 00:10:15.066 --> 00:10:16.767
  • "and love your neighbor as yourself."
  • 00:10:16.767 --> 00:10:19.336
  • And if you do, jesus said, hey, mr. judean lawyer, you'll have a
  • 00:10:19.336 --> 00:10:23.541
  • Reservation in god's future kingdom, all right, anybody else
  • 00:10:23.541 --> 00:10:26.644
  • Have a question?
  • 00:10:26.644 --> 00:10:28.345
  • But the lawyer didn't sit down because he's not finished.
  • 00:10:28.345 --> 00:10:32.817
  • And the text says, luke tells us because somebody who was there
  • 00:10:32.817 --> 00:10:36.020
  • Told luke, but he, the lawyer, was just like us.
  • 00:10:36.020 --> 00:10:40.257
  • He wanted to justify himself.
  • 00:10:40.257 --> 00:10:43.527
  • Don't we all?
  • 00:10:43.527 --> 00:10:44.995
  • So he didn't sit back down, he says--so he asked jesus.
  • 00:10:44.995 --> 00:10:50.868
  • This is the second part of the question: "okay, all right, if
  • 00:10:50.868 --> 00:10:53.304
  • I'm gonna reserve, you know, spot in god's future kingdom, i
  • 00:10:53.304 --> 00:10:56.507
  • Gotta love my neighbor as myself, but you gotta be more
  • 00:10:56.507 --> 00:11:00.678
  • Specific than that."
  • 00:11:00.678 --> 00:11:02.146
  • And who--here's the famous question: "and who is
  • 00:11:02.146 --> 00:11:06.283
  • My neighbor?"
  • 00:11:06.283 --> 00:11:07.651
  • Now this is how this question was an attempt to
  • 00:11:07.651 --> 00:11:10.154
  • Justify himself.
  • 00:11:10.154 --> 00:11:11.489
  • What he's really asking is what is the minimum amount of
  • 00:11:11.489 --> 00:11:15.092
  • Neighbor-loving required to reserve a spot in god's future
  • 00:11:15.092 --> 00:11:19.029
  • Kingdom, okay?
  • 00:11:19.029 --> 00:11:20.364
  • Don't just tell me, love--that's too open ended.
  • 00:11:20.364 --> 00:11:21.966
  • I want--you gotta be--i wanna know what is the minimum amount.
  • 00:11:21.966 --> 00:11:26.170
  • Now, for first century, not every century, but for first
  • 00:11:26.170 --> 00:11:28.739
  • Century judeans, a neighbor was another judean.
  • 00:11:28.739 --> 00:11:31.909
  • This was very ethnocentric, to love--your neighbors were other
  • 00:11:31.909 --> 00:11:36.514
  • Judeans because they were--you know, rome was there, there were
  • 00:11:36.514 --> 00:11:39.350
  • Different countries that were--had become part of that
  • 00:11:39.350 --> 00:11:41.418
  • Culture and so they're, you know, they're sort of taking
  • 00:11:41.418 --> 00:11:44.188
  • Care of themselves.
  • 00:11:44.188 --> 00:11:45.756
  • So his question is which subset of my judean brothers and
  • 00:11:45.756 --> 00:11:50.194
  • Sisters do i have to love?
  • 00:11:50.194 --> 00:11:52.496
  • Hoping he had already met the requirement.
  • 00:11:52.496 --> 00:11:55.466
  • And then once again, in typical jesus fashion, jesus didn't
  • 00:11:55.466 --> 00:11:58.836
  • Answer the question he asked.
  • 00:11:58.836 --> 00:12:02.039
  • Jesus answers the question that he should have asked, because
  • 00:12:02.039 --> 00:12:06.210
  • The real question isn't who is my neighbor.
  • 00:12:06.210 --> 00:12:09.213
  • The real question that jesus wanted him to understand was
  • 00:12:09.213 --> 00:12:12.249
  • This question: what does neighbor love look like?
  • 00:12:12.249 --> 00:12:15.820
  • And what does neighbor love act like?
  • 00:12:15.820 --> 00:12:18.722
  • Because jesus's actual agenda was this question: what is
  • 00:12:18.722 --> 00:12:24.528
  • God like?
  • 00:12:24.528 --> 00:12:26.964
  • And then as many of you know, jesus launches into the most
  • 00:12:26.964 --> 00:12:31.468
  • Disruptive, culturally insensitive, disorienting,
  • 00:12:31.468 --> 00:12:36.440
  • Paradigm-shifting parable of all of his ministry.
  • 00:12:36.440 --> 00:12:40.578
  • But more important than knowing the story, jesus's point is
  • 00:12:40.578 --> 00:12:43.047
  • Simply this: "this is what it looks like to follow me, because
  • 00:12:43.047 --> 00:12:47.284
  • This is what your father in heaven is like."
  • 00:12:47.284 --> 00:12:52.556
  • So he smiles.
  • 00:12:52.556 --> 00:12:53.891
  • The man's still standing there, everybody's waiting for an
  • 00:12:53.891 --> 00:12:55.392
  • Answer to the question.
  • 00:12:55.392 --> 00:12:57.061
  • Jesus says: "a man was going down from jerusalem to jericho
  • 00:12:57.061 --> 00:13:02.533
  • When he was attacked by robbers."
  • 00:13:02.533 --> 00:13:05.302
  • And everybody's like, "wait, weren't we just talking
  • 00:13:05.302 --> 00:13:08.172
  • About neighbors?
  • 00:13:08.172 --> 00:13:09.540
  • Now we're talking about robbers?"
  • 00:13:09.540 --> 00:13:10.875
  • But this is what jesus did, because everybody's leaning in
  • 00:13:10.875 --> 00:13:12.476
  • Because they know this is going somewhere.
  • 00:13:12.476 --> 00:13:14.111
  • And this was familiar context for them, because anybody going
  • 00:13:14.111 --> 00:13:18.148
  • Down from jerusalem to jericho, everybody knew that path.
  • 00:13:18.148 --> 00:13:20.384
  • It's about 17 miles, it's rocky, there's caves, there's desert,
  • 00:13:20.384 --> 00:13:25.022
  • It was dangerous, it's always a little bit dangerous.
  • 00:13:25.022 --> 00:13:27.892
  • It was so dangerous back then.
  • 00:13:27.892 --> 00:13:30.327
  • So this man--this is something that happened all the time and
  • 00:13:30.327 --> 00:13:32.897
  • Could have happened to anyone in jesus's audience.
  • 00:13:32.897 --> 00:13:34.932
  • He's on his way from jeri--from jerusalem down to jericho, and
  • 00:13:34.932 --> 00:13:38.636
  • He's set upon by robbers, and then jesus continues, "and they
  • 00:13:38.636 --> 00:13:41.538
  • Stripped him of his clothes, because clothes were
  • 00:13:41.538 --> 00:13:44.275
  • Very valuable.
  • 00:13:44.275 --> 00:13:45.643
  • "they stripped him of his clothes and they beat him and
  • 00:13:45.643 --> 00:13:47.311
  • They went away, leaving him half dead."
  • 00:13:47.311 --> 00:13:50.681
  • Then jesus goes on, now remember this is a parable.
  • 00:13:50.681 --> 00:13:52.650
  • Jesus is making the whole thing up.
  • 00:13:52.650 --> 00:13:53.984
  • This--none of this--this is--this could have happened,
  • 00:13:53.984 --> 00:13:56.053
  • But this is a made up story in order to make a single point and
  • 00:13:56.053 --> 00:13:58.889
  • Everybody's leaning in.
  • 00:13:58.889 --> 00:14:00.224
  • And of course the lawyer's like, "i hope we get back to the
  • 00:14:00.224 --> 00:14:02.192
  • Neighbor thing, but go ahead, this is fascinating," right?
  • 00:14:02.192 --> 00:14:05.596
  • Jesus says, "and then these two religious people," one actually
  • 00:14:05.596 --> 00:14:08.832
  • It appears from what jesus said, coming from jerusalem, so
  • 00:14:08.832 --> 00:14:11.635
  • They're all ceremonially clean and all buttoned up with god.
  • 00:14:11.635 --> 00:14:15.272
  • "these two religious people come by and they see their bruised
  • 00:14:15.272 --> 00:14:19.243
  • And bleeding judean neighbor, and they don't lift a finger.
  • 00:14:19.243 --> 00:14:25.916
  • In fact, they probably thought to themselves, 'well, you
  • 00:14:25.916 --> 00:14:27.785
  • Know what?
  • 00:14:27.785 --> 00:14:29.153
  • He probably deserved this.
  • 00:14:29.153 --> 00:14:30.487
  • I mean this is fate, this is karma.
  • 00:14:30.487 --> 00:14:31.855
  • Besides, the law forbids us to kill anyone, but the law does
  • 00:14:31.855 --> 00:14:35.793
  • Not require us to keep someone from dying,' so they didn't."
  • 00:14:35.793 --> 00:14:40.331
  • Now, if his audience was paying close attention, and i wanna
  • 00:14:40.331 --> 00:14:44.301
  • Make sure we are, if his audience was paying close
  • 00:14:44.301 --> 00:14:46.637
  • Attention and if jesus's greatest hits formula was
  • 00:14:46.637 --> 00:14:51.108
  • Correct, that you love the lord your god, the heart, soul, mind
  • 00:14:51.108 --> 00:14:53.143
  • And strength, and your neighbor as yourself, well, then these
  • 00:14:53.143 --> 00:14:56.046
  • Two guys are doomed.
  • 00:14:56.046 --> 00:14:57.381
  • The two religious guys are doomed because they did not love
  • 00:14:57.381 --> 00:14:59.583
  • Their judean neighbor, which meant they did not love the
  • 00:14:59.583 --> 00:15:04.388
  • Lord their god, even though they were on their way or coming
  • 00:15:04.388 --> 00:15:08.826
  • From the city of jerusalem.
  • 00:15:08.826 --> 00:15:11.328
  • And then jesus pauses for dramatic effect because he's the
  • 00:15:11.328 --> 00:15:14.264
  • Master storyteller, and he says, "but there was another one,
  • 00:15:14.264 --> 00:15:17.868
  • Another person came by, but a samaritan."
  • 00:15:17.868 --> 00:15:21.205
  • Now everybody in jesus's audience is like, "ugh," you
  • 00:15:21.205 --> 00:15:23.674
  • Know, because they probably assumed that this was a real
  • 00:15:23.674 --> 00:15:26.043
  • Story, a samaritan is probably who robbed the guy to begin
  • 00:15:26.043 --> 00:15:29.513
  • With, because the judeans and samaritans, as you know, if you
  • 00:15:29.513 --> 00:15:32.282
  • Grew up in church, didn't get along.
  • 00:15:32.282 --> 00:15:33.617
  • In fact, judeans considered samaritans the least respectable
  • 00:15:33.617 --> 00:15:37.554
  • Of all people and consequently, as you would imagine, the
  • 00:15:37.554 --> 00:15:40.791
  • Samaritans kind of returned the favor because of how they were
  • 00:15:40.791 --> 00:15:43.460
  • Looked down on and because of how they were treated.
  • 00:15:43.460 --> 00:15:45.162
  • And now jesus, it looks like he--he's--looks like he's about
  • 00:15:45.162 --> 00:15:48.932
  • To make a samaritan the hero of this parable, "but a samaritan,"
  • 00:15:48.932 --> 00:15:56.740
  • And his audience is thinking, "wait, wait, wait, surely you're
  • 00:15:56.740 --> 00:15:59.777
  • Not about to make him the hero," but he did, but it's even worse
  • 00:15:59.777 --> 00:16:03.547
  • Than that.
  • 00:16:03.547 --> 00:16:04.882
  • If you paid attention to jesus's parables, and i don't know that
  • 00:16:04.882 --> 00:16:06.483
  • If jesus's audience did, but his disciples certainly did, because
  • 00:16:06.483 --> 00:16:09.987
  • In every single parable that jesus would tell, there is
  • 00:16:09.987 --> 00:16:13.123
  • Someone that represents god the father.
  • 00:16:13.123 --> 00:16:16.226
  • And the disciples, peter and the guys are like, "oh no, oh no, oh
  • 00:16:16.226 --> 00:16:20.964
  • No, he's about to make a samaritan the god figure in
  • 00:16:20.964 --> 00:16:24.701
  • The parable.
  • 00:16:24.701 --> 00:16:26.170
  • We're never gonna get this venture off the ground.
  • 00:16:26.170 --> 00:16:28.439
  • Does he not understand our culture?
  • 00:16:28.439 --> 00:16:30.574
  • I mean this is like the worst thing he could do."
  • 00:16:30.574 --> 00:16:34.044
  • But a samaritan, you know this story, as he traveled, came to
  • 00:16:34.044 --> 00:16:37.714
  • Where the man was and when he saw him, he took pity on him, he
  • 00:16:37.714 --> 00:16:43.987
  • Did something.
  • 00:16:43.987 --> 00:16:45.923
  • And then jesus makes this samaritan out to be the
  • 00:16:45.923 --> 00:16:49.326
  • Extra mile.
  • 00:16:49.326 --> 00:16:50.694
  • Are you kidding me?
  • 00:16:50.694 --> 00:16:52.029
  • Who would even think about doing that variety of hero?
  • 00:16:52.029 --> 00:16:55.099
  • In fact, there are six, i counted six.
  • 00:16:55.099 --> 00:16:57.334
  • There may be more, six or more expressions of compassion.
  • 00:16:57.334 --> 00:17:00.904
  • So jesus just--he's just packing it on.
  • 00:17:00.904 --> 00:17:02.873
  • He's just loading it on.
  • 00:17:02.873 --> 00:17:04.208
  • He's just twisting the knife.
  • 00:17:04.208 --> 00:17:05.542
  • He says this, "he went," this imaginary samaritan who came
  • 00:17:05.542 --> 00:17:08.245
  • Upon this imaginary judean who'd been robbed, "he went to him and
  • 00:17:08.245 --> 00:17:11.748
  • He bandaged his wounds," which meant he touched him, "he poured
  • 00:17:11.748 --> 00:17:15.552
  • Oil and wine on the wounds," which means it cost him, "then
  • 00:17:15.552 --> 00:17:18.789
  • He put the man on his own donkey," which meant it--you
  • 00:17:18.789 --> 00:17:21.792
  • Know, he had to go out of his way.
  • 00:17:21.792 --> 00:17:23.127
  • Now he's gonna have to walk and go slower instead of ride, "and
  • 00:17:23.127 --> 00:17:25.562
  • He brought him to an inn and he took care of him."
  • 00:17:25.562 --> 00:17:29.900
  • And the audience is like, wait, wait, wait.
  • 00:17:29.900 --> 00:17:31.568
  • The guy spends the night and jesus just rubs it and this
  • 00:17:31.568 --> 00:17:34.771
  • Wasn't a dump and run.
  • 00:17:34.771 --> 00:17:36.106
  • He spent the night caring for this guy.
  • 00:17:36.106 --> 00:17:38.575
  • "then the next day," i mean, the audience can--this is just
  • 00:17:38.575 --> 00:17:41.912
  • Beyond imagination.
  • 00:17:41.912 --> 00:17:43.247
  • Nobody would do this.
  • 00:17:43.247 --> 00:17:44.615
  • "then the next day, he took out two denarii and gave them to the
  • 00:17:44.615 --> 00:17:48.152
  • Innkeeper," and immediately they do the math in their mind.
  • 00:17:48.152 --> 00:17:50.754
  • They're like, are you kidding?
  • 00:17:50.754 --> 00:17:52.156
  • This would take care of the guy for like two weeks.
  • 00:17:52.156 --> 00:17:54.424
  • You just pay like two weeks of room and board for someone you
  • 00:17:54.424 --> 00:17:57.327
  • Don't even know.
  • 00:17:57.327 --> 00:17:59.997
  • And in the parable, the samaritan says to the innkeeper,
  • 00:17:59.997 --> 00:18:03.834
  • "hey, i gotta go, but i want you to look after him.
  • 00:18:03.834 --> 00:18:08.672
  • And when i return," "oh no, you're gonna come back?"
  • 00:18:08.672 --> 00:18:13.810
  • "oh yeah, i'm gonna come back and check on this guy."
  • 00:18:13.810 --> 00:18:16.180
  • "when i return, i will reimburse you for any extra expense you
  • 00:18:16.180 --> 00:18:19.383
  • May have."
  • 00:18:19.383 --> 00:18:21.151
  • Silence.
  • 00:18:21.151 --> 00:18:22.653
  • Nobody--this is beyond the pale, and what in the world does this
  • 00:18:22.653 --> 00:18:25.289
  • Have to do with neighbors?
  • 00:18:25.289 --> 00:18:26.623
  • Okay, this is just--you just made up a story no one could
  • 00:18:26.623 --> 00:18:28.492
  • Ever believe.
  • 00:18:28.492 --> 00:18:29.826
  • You lost us as soon as he touched the guy, right?
  • 00:18:29.826 --> 00:18:32.429
  • The lawyer's confused.
  • 00:18:32.429 --> 00:18:35.866
  • If you're not a christian, if you're not a jesus follower, you
  • 00:18:35.866 --> 00:18:38.368
  • Walked away.
  • 00:18:38.368 --> 00:18:39.803
  • I don't even know how to put words around this next moment,
  • 00:18:39.803 --> 00:18:44.374
  • But it's undeniable what i'm about to say because this
  • 00:18:44.374 --> 00:18:46.577
  • Actually happened, but again, it's just a reminder of the
  • 00:18:46.577 --> 00:18:50.514
  • Weight of jesus teaching and how it has shaped culture, cultures
  • 00:18:50.514 --> 00:18:55.052
  • All over the world.
  • 00:18:55.052 --> 00:18:56.887
  • What jesus did next, his immediate audience would not
  • 00:18:56.887 --> 00:19:01.758
  • Live long enough to appreciate because jesus was about to
  • 00:19:01.758 --> 00:19:08.765
  • Redefine neighbor for everyone, and every generation, and in
  • 00:19:08.765 --> 00:19:16.273
  • Every nation.
  • 00:19:16.273 --> 00:19:17.641
  • Neighbor would no longer be primarily about ethnicity,
  • 00:19:17.641 --> 00:19:21.945
  • Proximity, "do you like me?"
  • 00:19:21.945 --> 00:19:26.750
  • Jesus expands the idea of neighbor beyond judea
  • 00:19:26.750 --> 00:19:30.654
  • And galilee.
  • 00:19:30.654 --> 00:19:32.489
  • He expands it beyond people you know and don't know.
  • 00:19:32.489 --> 00:19:35.392
  • In fact, he expands it beyond the borders of
  • 00:19:35.392 --> 00:19:38.328
  • Their scripture.
  • 00:19:38.328 --> 00:19:41.698
  • And what's so brilliant, this is why nobody could make this up,
  • 00:19:41.698 --> 00:19:44.234
  • And jesus does all of that for every generation and every
  • 00:19:44.234 --> 00:19:47.371
  • Nation with one perfectly timed, perfectly created, perfectly
  • 00:19:47.371 --> 00:19:55.212
  • Delivered question, and it's a question that forces me, and
  • 00:19:55.212 --> 00:20:00.584
  • It's a question that forces you, and it's a question that forces
  • 00:20:00.584 --> 00:20:03.287
  • Everybody everywhere to examine
  • 00:20:03.287 --> 00:20:05.656
  • Their hearts, our hearts, and our prejudices, and our contempt
  • 00:20:05.656 --> 00:20:13.597
  • For folks who don't look like us and who don't live like us, who
  • 00:20:13.597 --> 00:20:18.235
  • Don't believe like us, who don't act like us, who don't worship
  • 00:20:18.235 --> 00:20:22.139
  • Like us, who don't vote like us, who are basically nothing
  • 00:20:22.139 --> 00:20:27.744
  • Like us.
  • 00:20:27.744 --> 00:20:29.246
  • Who don't even like us.
  • 00:20:29.246 --> 00:20:30.881
  • And 2,000 years later, 2,000 years later,
  • 00:20:30.881 --> 00:20:34.718
  • The weight of this annoying question still rests on
  • 00:20:34.718 --> 00:20:40.891
  • Our shoulders.
  • 00:20:40.891 --> 00:20:42.225
  • I--it's annoying.
  • 00:20:42.225 --> 00:20:43.593
  • It's annoying because we all know the answer to the question
  • 00:20:43.593 --> 00:20:45.395
  • And it's inescapable.
  • 00:20:45.395 --> 00:20:47.597
  • So jesus looks at the lawyer after he finishes the parable
  • 00:20:47.597 --> 00:20:51.301
  • And he says this, "okay, i got a question for you.
  • 00:20:51.301 --> 00:20:53.203
  • You've been asking me questions.
  • 00:20:53.203 --> 00:20:56.606
  • Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man
  • 00:20:56.606 --> 00:21:03.413
  • Who fell into the hands of robbers?"
  • 00:21:03.413 --> 00:21:07.317
  • Now, if they've been paying attention and if you've been
  • 00:21:07.317 --> 00:21:09.419
  • Paying attention, and if we've been paying attention, the
  • 00:21:09.419 --> 00:21:11.822
  • Implication behind this question go way beyond the excitement
  • 00:21:11.822 --> 00:21:15.992
  • And the drama of the parable.
  • 00:21:15.992 --> 00:21:18.495
  • Here's what the question really comes down to: which of these
  • 00:21:18.495 --> 00:21:24.234
  • Three loved god?
  • 00:21:24.234 --> 00:21:28.038
  • Which of these three loved god with all his heart, soul, mind,
  • 00:21:28.038 --> 00:21:31.108
  • And strength by loving a stranger as himself?
  • 00:21:31.108 --> 00:21:37.547
  • And the problem for the lawyer standing there is this: if he
  • 00:21:39.383 --> 00:21:42.986
  • Answers this question out loud, he's accountable to his answer.
  • 00:21:42.986 --> 00:21:49.092
  • It's worse than that.
  • 00:21:49.092 --> 00:21:51.528
  • If you answer this question out loud, or if you answer this
  • 00:21:51.528 --> 00:21:54.698
  • Question out loud, or if i answered this question out loud,
  • 00:21:54.698 --> 00:21:58.068
  • I'm accountable to my answer for the question.
  • 00:21:58.068 --> 00:22:01.405
  • And the lawyer surrounded by judeans primarily, he can't even
  • 00:22:01.405 --> 00:22:05.675
  • Bring himself to answer the question directly.
  • 00:22:05.675 --> 00:22:08.812
  • The text as luke tells us, "the expert in the law replied,"
  • 00:22:08.812 --> 00:22:13.483
  • Jesus said, "which one of the three?
  • 00:22:13.483 --> 00:22:14.985
  • There's just three.
  • 00:22:14.985 --> 00:22:16.353
  • There's two that walk by and there's one that helps.
  • 00:22:16.353 --> 00:22:17.687
  • Which one of the three was a neighbor?"
  • 00:22:17.687 --> 00:22:19.022
  • And he's like, "the, you know, the other one, the one," can't
  • 00:22:19.022 --> 00:22:25.562
  • Even say samaritan.
  • 00:22:25.562 --> 00:22:27.964
  • "but you know, the one who had mercy on him.
  • 00:22:27.964 --> 00:22:32.669
  • The one who saw a need, met it.
  • 00:22:32.669 --> 00:22:35.639
  • The one that saw there was something to do that they could
  • 00:22:35.639 --> 00:22:38.241
  • Do and they did it.
  • 00:22:38.241 --> 00:22:40.544
  • The one that didn't talk themselves out of it."
  • 00:22:40.544 --> 00:22:46.450
  • Jesus smiles.
  • 00:22:46.450 --> 00:22:48.585
  • Looks at him, looks at his audience, looks at me, looks at
  • 00:22:48.585 --> 00:22:51.822
  • You, looks at us.
  • 00:22:51.822 --> 00:22:53.890
  • He says, "all right.
  • 00:22:53.890 --> 00:22:55.692
  • Tell you what, go.
  • 00:22:55.692 --> 00:22:58.361
  • Just do that.
  • 00:22:58.361 --> 00:23:01.498
  • Do you wanna participate in the kingdom of god on earth?
  • 00:23:01.498 --> 00:23:05.735
  • Do you wanna live your life in sync with god's activity in
  • 00:23:05.735 --> 00:23:09.005
  • The world?
  • 00:23:09.005 --> 00:23:10.373
  • Then just go do that.
  • 00:23:10.373 --> 00:23:13.977
  • When you see a need, you can meet, meet it.
  • 00:23:13.977 --> 00:23:15.412
  • When there's something you know you can do, do it.
  • 00:23:15.412 --> 00:23:19.182
  • Don't talk yourself out of it.
  • 00:23:19.182 --> 00:23:20.984
  • Just go," they hated this part, this is maybe why he didn't
  • 00:23:20.984 --> 00:23:23.753
  • Say it.
  • 00:23:23.753 --> 00:23:25.088
  • These are my words not his just, he was basically saying, "just
  • 00:23:25.088 --> 00:23:26.690
  • Go be the samaritan in the parable."
  • 00:23:26.690 --> 00:23:32.262
  • And suddenly neighbor love has no boundaries.
  • 00:23:32.262 --> 00:23:38.568
  • And neighbor love didn't because god's love doesn't.
  • 00:23:38.568 --> 00:23:45.742
  • And this is when luke just wants to come off the page and grab me
  • 00:23:45.742 --> 00:23:49.446
  • By the collar and put his hand behind your head and pull you up
  • 00:23:49.446 --> 00:23:52.782
  • Close and say, "can you believe this?
  • 00:23:52.782 --> 00:23:55.385
  • Nobody thought this way, nobody lived this way.
  • 00:23:55.385 --> 00:23:58.955
  • Nobody could even imagine a community like that.
  • 00:23:58.955 --> 00:24:01.424
  • Nobody could imagine a world like that."
  • 00:24:01.424 --> 00:24:04.361
  • And jesus asked this perfect question, and by the time luke
  • 00:24:04.361 --> 00:24:07.797
  • Writes his gospel, it's already having ripple effects through
  • 00:24:07.797 --> 00:24:11.134
  • Judea and galilee and samaria, and the apostle paul and others
  • 00:24:11.134 --> 00:24:15.071
  • Are gonna take it to the outermost parts of the earth.
  • 00:24:15.071 --> 00:24:19.075
  • And what was not self-evident in the ancient world is so
  • 00:24:19.075 --> 00:24:22.412
  • Self-evident to us because of the teaching and the life
  • 00:24:22.412 --> 00:24:26.383
  • Of jesus.
  • 00:24:26.383 --> 00:24:27.717
  • And somehow luke knew this is the story that has to outlive me
  • 00:24:27.717 --> 00:24:32.122
  • And outlive my generation.
  • 00:24:32.122 --> 00:24:36.092
  • Because when you hear the story, you know that if we live that
  • 00:24:36.092 --> 00:24:39.396
  • Way, the world would change.
  • 00:24:39.396 --> 00:24:42.732
  • It would change everything.
  • 00:24:42.732 --> 00:24:46.536
  • So back to us.
  • 00:24:46.536 --> 00:24:49.105
  • "so which one of the three do you think," do i think, "which
  • 00:24:49.105 --> 00:24:55.845
  • One of the three do you think was a neighbor to the man who
  • 00:24:55.845 --> 00:24:57.714
  • Fell into the hands of robbers?"
  • 00:24:57.714 --> 00:25:02.919
  • Don't answer it out loud or you'll be accountable.
  • 00:25:02.919 --> 00:25:07.157
  • But if you wanna see god's kingdom come and see god's will
  • 00:25:07.157 --> 00:25:10.527
  • Be done, if you are a jesus follower and not just an
  • 00:25:10.527 --> 00:25:12.762
  • Admirer, jesus does not need any more admirers, he has plenty of
  • 00:25:12.762 --> 00:25:16.733
  • Admirers, he has plenty of believers, he needs doers,
  • 00:25:16.733 --> 00:25:20.136
  • Because it's the doers that change the world.
  • 00:25:20.136 --> 00:25:24.140
  • It's the doers, not even the prayers, that change the way you
  • 00:25:24.140 --> 00:25:27.344
  • Can walk by a wounded man and pray that somebody will stop and
  • 00:25:27.344 --> 00:25:29.980
  • Help him, and that is not loving the lord your god.
  • 00:25:29.980 --> 00:25:33.216
  • And i know this is challenging, and i know it's like how far do
  • 00:25:33.216 --> 00:25:35.418
  • We take it, and again, we wanna justify ourselves.
  • 00:25:35.418 --> 00:25:37.754
  • I get it, i wanna justify myself.
  • 00:25:37.754 --> 00:25:41.257
  • But do you wanna change the world?
  • 00:25:41.257 --> 00:25:42.592
  • Do you wanna change the community?
  • 00:25:42.592 --> 00:25:43.960
  • Do you wanna see change? it's very simple.
  • 00:25:43.960 --> 00:25:45.328
  • Jesus gave us the formula.
  • 00:25:45.328 --> 00:25:48.765
  • He wraps it up in that horrible, wonderful question.
  • 00:25:48.765 --> 00:25:52.702
  • You wanna see?
  • 00:25:52.702 --> 00:25:54.037
  • For those of you, faith has gotten boring for you, church
  • 00:25:54.037 --> 00:25:56.006
  • Has gotten boring for you.
  • 00:25:56.006 --> 00:25:57.374
  • In fact, one of the reasons you're losing faith is because
  • 00:25:57.374 --> 00:25:58.842
  • There's just nothing to it.
  • 00:25:58.842 --> 00:26:00.176
  • You know why there's nothing to it?
  • 00:26:00.176 --> 00:26:01.511
  • You're not doing it.
  • 00:26:01.511 --> 00:26:02.879
  • You're just believing it, or disbelieving it, or debating it,
  • 00:26:02.879 --> 00:26:06.650
  • But you step into a realm when you see something that needs to
  • 00:26:06.650 --> 00:26:09.185
  • Be done, do it, and when there's a need you think you can meet,
  • 00:26:09.185 --> 00:26:11.287
  • You meet it, and you get in a little deep and a little bit
  • 00:26:11.287 --> 00:26:13.657
  • Over your head and suddenly you're praying like never
  • 00:26:13.657 --> 00:26:15.859
  • Before, and suddenly your faith comes to life like maybe it's
