  • The context is the point of the parable, and without

  • Understanding the context, we don't get the point of

  • The parable.
  • 00:07:28.432 --> 00:07:29.767
  • And luke would tell us, if he could stop and just speak to us,
  • 00:07:29.767 --> 00:07:31.636
  • He'd say, "hey, the point of these three parables is the

  • This is why jesus branded his message good news."
  • 00:07:40.144 --> 00:07:44.782
  • And then luke tells us what unfolds.

  • One day jesus is teaching, and here's what happens.

  • 00:08:07.271 --> 00:08:09.273
  • Tax collector."
  • 00:08:09.273 --> 00:08:10.608
  • I mean, it was like the lowest of the low, but the tax
  • 00:08:10.608 --> 00:08:12.577
  • Collectors and the sinners, these are the unclean.
  • 00:08:12.577 --> 00:08:15.179
  • These are people who are not worthy to enter the temple.
  • 00:08:15.179 --> 00:08:17.615
  • These are people who are distanced from god, and many
  • 00:08:17.615 --> 00:08:21.185
  • Thought this group of people was hopelessly separated from god.
  • 00:08:21.185 --> 00:08:26.757
  • But here is the amazing part of the beginning of this
  • 00:08:26.757 --> 00:08:29.560
  • Little narrative.
  • 00:08:29.560 --> 00:08:30.895
  • "now the tax collectors and sinners were all gathering
  • 00:08:30.895 --> 00:08:33.431
  • Around to hear jesus."
  • 00:08:33.431 --> 00:08:36.334
  • And luke's right.
  • 00:08:36.334 --> 00:08:37.668
  • And this--and he would just say this, "isn't that amazing?"
  • 00:08:37.668 --> 00:08:40.204
  • And for us modern-day church people, we would say, "no, it's
  • 00:08:40.204 --> 00:08:42.640
  • Not amazing, it's embarrassing.
  • 00:08:42.640 --> 00:08:45.142
  • It's embarrassing because people who are far from god don't
  • 00:08:45.142 --> 00:08:48.346
  • Gather around to listen to us, they think we're crazy, and they
  • 00:08:48.346 --> 00:08:51.148
  • Think we're judgmental, and they think a whole lot of things, but
  • 00:08:51.148 --> 00:08:53.451
  • Nobody's gathering around to listen to us."
  • 00:08:53.451 --> 00:08:55.920
  • Apparently the church didn't always get this right, right,
  • 00:08:55.920 --> 00:09:00.658
  • Which is one of the reasons that you're having to reconsider
  • 00:09:00.658 --> 00:09:02.893
  • Faith because you met too many christians.
  • 00:09:02.893 --> 00:09:04.762
  • I mean, bad christians happen to good people all the time, right?
  • 00:09:04.762 --> 00:09:09.767
  • And luke is--and luke understands this.
  • 00:09:09.767 --> 00:09:11.569
  • He's like, "i get it.
  • 00:09:11.569 --> 00:09:12.937
  • I'm about to introduce you to the other crowd," but don't miss
  • 00:09:12.937 --> 00:09:16.407
  • The point that people who were nothing like jesus liked jesus.
  • 00:09:16.407 --> 00:09:22.013
  • He was righteous, he was not self-righteous in the sense that
  • 00:09:22.013 --> 00:09:27.051
  • He carried his righteousness in such a way that it made the
  • 00:09:27.051 --> 00:09:30.154
  • Unrighteous feel pushed away.
  • 00:09:30.154 --> 00:09:31.956
  • On the contrary, it made the unrighteous feel drawn in.
  • 00:09:31.956 --> 00:09:38.029
  • Isn't that amazing?
  • 00:09:38.029 --> 00:09:39.397
  • Imagine if the church had been that way for 2000 years.
  • 00:09:39.397 --> 00:09:42.833
  • Once upon a time, it was.
  • 00:09:42.833 --> 00:09:45.102
  • If it wasn't, we wouldn't be here today.
  • 00:09:45.102 --> 00:09:47.705
  • He continues, but there's another group, "but the
  • 00:09:47.705 --> 00:09:49.707
  • Pharisees and the teachers of the law," and i love this word,
  • 00:09:49.707 --> 00:09:53.044
  • We should bring it back.
  • 00:09:53.044 --> 00:09:54.378
  • "the pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered,"
  • 00:09:54.378 --> 00:09:56.814
  • They muttered.
  • 00:09:56.814 --> 00:09:58.149
  • Here's what they muttered, "if this teacher really was from
  • 00:09:58.149 --> 00:10:02.119
  • God, these people would avoid him like they avoid us.
  • 00:10:02.119 --> 00:10:06.657
  • But since they're not avoiding him like they avoid us,
  • 00:10:06.657 --> 00:10:09.860
  • Obviously this teacher is watering down the torah, because
  • 00:10:09.860 --> 00:10:13.764
  • If he was teaching it straight, they would have--wanna have
  • 00:10:13.764 --> 00:10:16.434
  • Nothing to do with him, they would feel condemned by him just
  • 00:10:16.434 --> 00:10:18.803
  • Like they feel condemned by us."
  • 00:10:18.803 --> 00:10:21.405
  • Here's what luke said they said to one another, "'this man,'"
  • 00:10:21.405 --> 00:10:24.141
  • Talking about jesus, "'this man,'" they had no idea,
  • 00:10:24.141 --> 00:10:27.378
  • Did they?
  • 00:10:27.378 --> 00:10:28.746
  • This man, he's just another man.
  • 00:10:28.746 --> 00:10:30.081
  • "'this man welcomes sinners and eats with them.'"
  • 00:10:30.081 --> 00:10:33.050
  • "if he was from god, he would avoid them and eat with us."
  • 00:10:33.050 --> 00:10:38.556
  • So, jesus is guilty by association.
  • 00:10:38.556 --> 00:10:41.125
  • Now, let me just tell you one thing about jesus and guilt by
  • 00:10:41.125 --> 00:10:43.060
  • Association, this is so important.
  • 00:10:43.060 --> 00:10:44.862
  • If jesus were concerned about guilt by association, he would
  • 00:10:44.862 --> 00:10:48.599
  • Have stayed in heaven, okay?
  • 00:10:48.599 --> 00:10:51.402
  • So, now everybody's there, everybody's there.
  • 00:10:51.402 --> 00:10:53.370
  • You got the pharisees, teachers of the law, you got the tax
  • 00:10:53.370 --> 00:10:55.806
  • Gatherers, you got the sinners, everybody's there, and jesus
  • 00:10:55.806 --> 00:10:59.744
  • Sees his opportunity.
  • 00:10:59.744 --> 00:11:01.078
  • And jesus, because he's the master storyteller, he begins
  • 00:11:01.078 --> 00:11:03.414
  • With a question that'll put everybody on the same page and a
  • 00:11:03.414 --> 00:11:05.583
  • Question that everybody in his audience will answer the
  • 00:11:05.583 --> 00:11:07.518
  • Same way.
  • 00:11:07.518 --> 00:11:08.853
  • Here's how he starts it off 'cause he's so brilliant.
  • 00:11:08.853 --> 00:11:11.055
  • He says this, "'suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and
  • 00:11:11.055 --> 00:11:15.192
  • Loses one of them.'"
  • 00:11:15.192 --> 00:11:16.527
  • Well, this is easy, this is 101 because everybody there knows
  • 00:11:16.527 --> 00:11:19.697
  • What they would do.
  • 00:11:19.697 --> 00:11:21.065
  • They're like, "well you go looking for it.
  • 00:11:21.065 --> 00:11:22.399
  • If you lose one sheep, you go looking--you leave the
  • 00:11:22.399 --> 00:11:24.135
  • 99 and you go look for the 1.
  • 00:11:24.135 --> 00:11:25.836
  • That's just what you do."
  • 00:11:25.836 --> 00:11:27.605
  • Now, you know, most of us as americans, we think, "what would
  • 00:11:27.605 --> 00:11:31.075
  • I do with a 100 sheep anyway?
  • 00:11:31.075 --> 00:11:32.576
  • And if i lost one, i wouldn't even know i lost it.
  • 00:11:32.576 --> 00:11:34.578
  • I got 99," so we cannot identify with this at all.
  • 00:11:34.578 --> 00:11:37.081
  • So, i want you to think in terms of credit cards and children for
  • 00:11:37.081 --> 00:11:40.217
  • Just a minute, okay?
  • 00:11:40.217 --> 00:11:44.922
  • When you lose something of value, here's what you don't do.
  • 00:11:44.922 --> 00:11:48.893
  • When you lose something of value, right, you don't console
  • 00:11:48.893 --> 00:11:52.396
  • Yourself with what's unlost.
  • 00:11:52.396 --> 00:11:55.933
  • You don't say, "but i still have my mastercard and my
  • 00:11:55.933 --> 00:12:00.070
  • Five-year old.
  • 00:12:00.070 --> 00:12:02.406
  • I don't know where my american express is or my eight-year old,
  • 00:12:02.406 --> 00:12:05.109
  • But i still have my mastercard and my five-year old," said
  • 00:12:05.109 --> 00:12:07.945
  • Nobody, right?
  • 00:12:07.945 --> 00:12:09.280
  • No, when you lose something of value, you are laser focused not
  • 00:12:09.280 --> 00:12:12.650
  • On what's found, but on what is lost.
  • 00:12:12.650 --> 00:12:15.252
  • So, they all get this first one, and then jesus interprets it.
  • 00:12:15.252 --> 00:12:18.222
  • He pulls out of the parable and he says, "in the same way," this
  • 00:12:18.222 --> 00:12:21.325
  • Is so powerful.
  • 00:12:21.325 --> 00:12:22.693
  • He says, "'i tell you that in the same way there will be more
  • 00:12:22.693 --> 00:12:26.130
  • Rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over
  • 00:12:26.130 --> 00:12:30.768
  • Ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.'"
  • 00:12:30.768 --> 00:12:34.538
  • And when they heard the word "repent," they understood this
  • 00:12:34.538 --> 00:12:37.474
  • Meant reconnect, reconnect, back in the family, back in sync.
  • 00:12:37.474 --> 00:12:43.681
  • Jesus says, "i'm telling you, there is more rejoicing in
  • 00:12:43.681 --> 00:12:46.584
  • Heaven over that one sinner."
  • 00:12:46.584 --> 00:12:49.053
  • "oh, you mean the sheep was a sinner and the 99--right,"
  • 00:12:49.053 --> 00:12:52.022
  • Which means they're thinking, "wait, wait, wait, hey, don't go
  • 00:12:52.022 --> 00:12:54.525
  • Too fast.
  • 00:12:54.525 --> 00:12:55.893
  • So, are you telling us that god views unrighteous people as
  • 00:12:55.893 --> 00:13:02.700
  • Something valuable that got separated from its owner?"
  • 00:13:02.700 --> 00:13:09.506
  • Jesus is like, "exactly."
  • 00:13:09.506 --> 00:13:12.643
  • Well, that's not really how we view unrighteous people.
  • 00:13:12.643 --> 00:13:16.313
  • Jesus is like, "and that's why i came."
  • 00:13:16.313 --> 00:13:19.483
  • This is what he would say to me.
  • 00:13:19.483 --> 00:13:20.885
  • He would say, "hey, before we move on, is that how you view
  • 00:13:20.885 --> 00:13:25.022
  • People not as right as you?
  • 00:13:25.022 --> 00:13:27.458
  • As something valuable that maybe got disconnected from the owner?
  • 00:13:27.458 --> 00:13:31.896
  • Is that how you view people not as right as you, or maybe not as
  • 00:13:31.896 --> 00:13:34.798
  • Left as you?"
  • 00:13:34.798 --> 00:13:37.801
  • Mhm.
  • 00:13:37.801 --> 00:13:39.169
  • Jesus goes to the second parable and it begins like this, "'or
  • 00:13:39.169 --> 00:13:42.740
  • Suppose a woman.'"
  • 00:13:42.740 --> 00:13:46.043
  • Now, we hear that and we go, "yeah, well, you gotta have
  • 00:13:46.043 --> 00:13:47.645
  • Men and women, that's what we do."
  • 00:13:47.645 --> 00:13:48.979
  • That's not what they did.
  • 00:13:48.979 --> 00:13:50.314
  • I'm telling you, when jesus said, "or suppose a woman," the
  • 00:13:50.314 --> 00:13:52.082
  • Women in the audience sat up straight like,
  • 00:13:52.082 --> 00:13:55.719
  • [whispering] "he's talking about us."
  • 00:13:55.719 --> 00:13:57.354
  • I mean, women have virtually no value, they're traded as
  • 00:13:57.354 --> 00:13:59.423
  • Little girls.
  • 00:13:59.423 --> 00:14:00.758
  • I mean, they're virtually no value even within
  • 00:14:00.758 --> 00:14:02.159
  • That community.
  • 00:14:02.159 --> 00:14:03.494
  • Just--we can't even imagine.
  • 00:14:03.494 --> 00:14:05.229
  • We can imagine, there are places in the world where what's
  • 00:14:05.229 --> 00:14:07.498
  • Self-evident to us about the equality is not
  • 00:14:07.498 --> 00:14:09.967
  • Self-evident, right?
  • 00:14:09.967 --> 00:14:11.335
  • We've talked about that before.
  • 00:14:11.335 --> 00:14:12.670
  • But more amazing, the people who were following jesus, his
  • 00:14:12.670 --> 00:14:15.072
  • Disciples, who understood how--what is--how his parables
  • 00:14:15.072 --> 00:14:17.508
  • Work, they understood that in every single parable, there is a
  • 00:14:17.508 --> 00:14:19.810
  • God figure.
  • 00:14:19.810 --> 00:14:21.178
  • In this little short parable, jesus does the unthinkable.
  • 00:14:21.178 --> 00:14:25.816
  • He associates the hero of the parable, a woman, with god.
  • 00:14:25.816 --> 00:14:30.521
  • He says, "well, imagine--or suppose a woman loses a
  • 00:14:30.521 --> 00:14:34.058
  • Coin," right?
  • 00:14:34.058 --> 00:14:35.426
  • And she goes--and the women are like, "we know what we would
  • 00:14:35.426 --> 00:14:37.461
  • Do," but they can't answer because of just the
  • 00:14:37.461 --> 00:14:39.263
  • Cultural context.
  • 00:14:39.263 --> 00:14:40.631
  • But jesus had addressed them, had elevated them.
  • 00:14:40.631 --> 00:14:43.434
  • Then jesus gets to his most famous of the three.
  • 00:14:43.434 --> 00:14:46.203
  • It's one of the most famous things he's ever taught.
  • 00:14:46.203 --> 00:14:48.105
  • It's iconic.
  • 00:14:48.105 --> 00:14:49.473
  • People all over the world know bits and pieces of the story,
  • 00:14:49.473 --> 00:14:51.308
  • Even if they don't know who originally said it.
  • 00:14:51.308 --> 00:14:52.843
  • This is the power of the teaching of jesus.
  • 00:14:52.843 --> 00:14:56.513
  • A wealthy man has two sons.
  • 00:14:56.513 --> 00:14:59.750
  • Two sons, and the younger was waiting on dad to die.
  • 00:14:59.750 --> 00:15:03.854
  • And his dad just wouldn't die.
  • 00:15:03.854 --> 00:15:05.322
  • He just kept getting older and he's like, "i wish my dad would
  • 00:15:05.322 --> 00:15:07.992
  • Die so i could get my half of the inheritance."
  • 00:15:07.992 --> 00:15:09.760
  • And he finally loses his patience and he says, "'father,
  • 00:15:09.760 --> 00:15:12.896
  • Give me my share of the estate.'"
  • 00:15:12.896 --> 00:15:14.398
  • Now, when jesus says this, he's sharing this parable, both
  • 00:15:14.398 --> 00:15:18.102
  • Groups, the sinners and the tax gatherers and the pharisees
  • 00:15:18.102 --> 00:15:21.772
  • And the teachers of the law, both groups and everybody in the
  • 00:15:21.772 --> 00:15:24.141
  • Middle, they gasp, "oh, this boy wishes his father was dead.
  • 00:15:24.141 --> 00:15:28.679
  • That's tantamount to murder.
  • 00:15:28.679 --> 00:15:30.080
  • This boy should be stoned."
  • 00:15:30.080 --> 00:15:32.282
  • And the master storyteller continues.
  • 00:15:32.282 --> 00:15:35.452
  • "so," instead of stoning him, "he divided his property
  • 00:15:35.452 --> 00:15:40.124
  • Between them."
  • 00:15:40.124 --> 00:15:41.492
  • And the crowd is like, "oh, why?
  • 00:15:41.492 --> 00:15:42.926
  • Why? why?
  • 00:15:42.926 --> 00:15:44.294
  • No one would do this.
  • 00:15:44.294 --> 00:15:45.629
  • You're losing us, jesus, why would anyone do this?"
  • 00:15:45.629 --> 00:15:47.998
  • But anyone who understood the first two parables and anybody
  • 00:15:47.998 --> 00:15:50.567
  • Who understood what jesus--the point jesus was making in the
  • 00:15:50.567 --> 00:15:53.303
  • First two parables would understand immediately why a
  • 00:15:53.303 --> 00:15:56.340
  • Father would divide everything he'd spent his life accumulating
  • 00:15:56.340 --> 00:16:00.711
  • Between his two sons, because his son was lost to him and he
  • 00:16:00.711 --> 00:16:09.053
  • Wanted him back.
  • 00:16:09.053 --> 00:16:10.754
  • Because his son was lost to him and he wanted him back.
  • 00:16:10.754 --> 00:16:14.158
  • And he was willing to do almost anything to get him back.
  • 00:16:14.158 --> 00:16:18.929
  • He wanted him back because-- so he let him go.
  • 00:16:18.929 --> 00:16:22.132
  • His son was lost to him not spatially, he's right there.
  • 00:16:22.132 --> 00:16:24.835
  • He was lost to him relationally and he wanted him back.
  • 00:16:24.835 --> 00:16:30.541
  • And the son takes the money and runs.
  • 00:16:30.541 --> 00:16:34.111
  • And then eventually he's broke, and some of you, this is
  • 00:16:34.111 --> 00:16:36.380
  • Your story.
  • 00:16:36.380 --> 00:16:37.714
  • You know, you hit a bump, you know, first it was just
  • 00:16:37.714 --> 00:16:39.316
  • Sprinkling and then it was raining and you're like, "oh, i
  • 00:16:39.316 --> 00:16:40.884
  • Can get through the rain," and then the whole bottom falls
  • 00:16:40.884 --> 00:16:42.653
  • Out, right?
  • 00:16:42.653 --> 00:16:44.021
  • It's just one thing after another after another.
  • 00:16:44.021 --> 00:16:45.355
  • So, he's broke, and then he has to get a job.
  • 00:16:45.355 --> 00:16:49.760
  • He's never had a job.
  • 00:16:49.760 --> 00:16:51.128
  • He's gotta get a job and the only job he can get is
  • 00:16:51.128 --> 00:16:53.197
  • Feeding--jesus--i'm telling you, jesus is the master storyteller.
  • 00:16:53.197 --> 00:16:56.166
  • It just goes lower and lower and lower and he gets a job as a
  • 00:16:56.166 --> 00:16:59.970
  • Pig farmer.
  • 00:16:59.970 --> 00:17:01.305
  • And his audience is like, moans, "oh, no, a pig farmer."
  • 00:17:01.305 --> 00:17:04.408
  • And now he's starving, and jesus says, "nobody will help him."
  • 00:17:04.408 --> 00:17:11.548
  • And the audience, jesus's audience, all of them together,
  • 00:17:11.548 --> 00:17:13.684
  • He's got him right where he want them--wants them.
  • 00:17:13.684 --> 00:17:15.352
  • The whole audience is going, "yes, he's reaping what
  • 00:17:15.352 --> 00:17:18.589
  • He sowed.
  • 00:17:18.589 --> 00:17:19.957
  • Let him sow, let him sow, let him sow."
  • 00:17:19.957 --> 00:17:23.994
  • First time this group has agreed on anything.
  • 00:17:23.994 --> 00:17:27.498
  • And then as you know, if you know this story,
  • 00:17:27.498 --> 00:17:29.133
  • I love this phrase.
  • 00:17:29.133 --> 00:17:30.501
  • One day he comes to his senses.
  • 00:17:30.501 --> 00:17:32.703
  • He wakes up.
  • 00:17:32.703 --> 00:17:34.071
  • It's like, "what in the world?"
  • 00:17:34.071 --> 00:17:35.405
  • He comes to his senses and he thinks to himself, "what am
  • 00:17:35.405 --> 00:17:37.574
  • I doing?"
  • 00:17:37.574 --> 00:17:38.909
  • And then he comes up with a plan.
  • 00:17:38.909 --> 00:17:40.244
  • I know what i'll do.
  • 00:17:40.244 --> 00:17:41.612
  • "'i will go back--i will set out and i will go back to my father
  • 00:17:41.612 --> 00:17:45.015
  • And i will say to him: father, i have sinned against heaven and
  • 00:17:45.015 --> 00:17:49.586
  • Against you.'"
  • 00:17:49.586 --> 00:17:50.954
  • So, he's broken, i mean, he's at the bottom.
  • 00:17:50.954 --> 00:17:52.723
  • "'i am no longer worthy to be called your son; just make me
  • 00:17:52.723 --> 00:17:57.928
  • Like one of your hired servants.'"
  • 00:17:57.928 --> 00:18:00.364
  • "i'm willing to work and have a job."
  • 00:18:00.364 --> 00:18:02.232
  • And so, he got up from where he was, quit what he was doing, and
  • 00:18:02.232 --> 00:18:05.402
  • He went to his father.
  • 00:18:05.402 --> 00:18:07.738
  • And he's rehearsing his speech all along the way, and jesus's
  • 00:18:07.738 --> 00:18:11.308
  • Audience, they're like, "this is gonna be good.
  • 00:18:11.308 --> 00:18:15.012
  • We know what's gonna happen," because they knew what they
  • 00:18:15.012 --> 00:18:20.951
  • Would do.
  • 00:18:20.951 --> 00:18:22.686
  • They did not know what the father would do because they did
  • 00:18:22.686 --> 00:18:27.691
  • Not know what god the father is like.
  • 00:18:27.691 --> 00:18:33.130
  • And this, luke would tell us, is why jesus came.
  • 00:18:33.130 --> 00:18:37.534
  • It's what he came to explain.
  • 00:18:37.534 --> 00:18:40.137
  • He would say these crazy things like, "if you've seen me, you've
  • 00:18:40.137 --> 00:18:43.240
  • Seen the father."
  • 00:18:43.240 --> 00:18:44.575
  • "show us the father."
  • 00:18:44.575 --> 00:18:45.943
  • Okay, jesus would say, "look, everything before me," this is
  • 00:18:45.943 --> 00:18:47.711
  • So important for somebody today.
  • 00:18:47.711 --> 00:18:49.746
  • Jesus was like, "everything that came before me was a shadow.
  • 00:18:49.746 --> 00:18:52.716
  • Everything that came before me was foreshadowing.
  • 00:18:52.716 --> 00:18:55.118
  • Everything that came before me was a hint.
  • 00:18:55.118 --> 00:18:57.321
  • It was just a--kind of just to get people's interest and to
  • 00:18:57.321 --> 00:18:59.790
  • Keep the thing, keep the story moving."
  • 00:18:59.790 --> 00:19:01.725
  • John said it this way, "for the word became flesh."
  • 00:19:01.725 --> 00:19:04.528
  • Before we were just guessing, trying to piece things together,
  • 00:19:04.528 --> 00:19:07.197
  • Trying to figure out cause and effect, but the word became
  • 00:19:07.197 --> 00:19:09.833
  • Flesh and he became one of us and dwelt among us so we could
  • 00:19:09.833 --> 00:19:13.837
  • Know what god is like.
  • 00:19:13.837 --> 00:19:15.205
  • Jesus's message through the gospel of luke is jesus came to
  • 00:19:15.205 --> 00:19:18.976
  • Take away as much mystery as he could possibly take away, not so
  • 00:19:18.976 --> 00:19:22.379
  • We would have answers to questions about god, so that we
  • 00:19:22.379 --> 00:19:25.716
  • Would have a relationship with the living god because we knew
  • 00:19:25.716 --> 00:19:30.153
  • His living son who became one of us.
  • 00:19:30.153 --> 00:19:35.392
  • If you wanna know, this is so important, if you wanna know
  • 00:19:35.392 --> 00:19:37.928
  • What god is like, you begin with jesus.
  • 00:19:37.928 --> 00:19:40.998
  • If you wanna know what god would say, you begin with jesus.
  • 00:19:40.998 --> 00:19:43.267
  • If you wanna know what god would do, you follow jesus through the
  • 00:19:43.267 --> 00:19:46.236
  • Gospels, because he's god in a body who came to reveal
  • 00:19:46.236 --> 00:19:49.706
  • The father.
  • 00:19:49.706 --> 00:19:51.074
  • "i glory--" he said at one point, "i glorified you on the
  • 00:19:51.074 --> 00:19:52.676
  • Earth," talking to his father.
  • 00:19:52.676 --> 00:19:54.011
  • "i glorified you on the earth, having accomplished the work
  • 00:19:54.011 --> 00:19:57.014
  • That you've given me to do.
  • 00:19:57.014 --> 00:19:58.348
  • I've explained you on earth, that was the work you gave me
  • 00:19:58.348 --> 00:20:03.253
  • To do."
  • 00:20:03.253 --> 00:20:04.955
  • How do we miss this?
  • 00:20:04.955 --> 00:20:07.691
  • "but while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and
  • 00:20:07.691 --> 00:20:14.464
  • He was filled with--"
  • 00:20:14.464 --> 00:20:16.900
  • If the father was like you, what would go in that blank?
  • 00:20:16.900 --> 00:20:23.173
  • If you were the son, what do you hope goes into that blank?
  • 00:20:23.173 --> 00:20:28.812
  • According to jesus, we've all been the son because at some
  • 00:20:28.812 --> 00:20:34.084
  • Season of our lives we've all been lost to god.
  • 00:20:34.084 --> 00:20:40.057
  • The father saw the son in the parable, "and he was filled with
  • 00:20:40.057 --> 00:20:42.759
  • Compassion for him."
  • 00:20:42.759 --> 00:20:44.127
  • And the crowds just moaned.
  • 00:20:44.127 --> 00:20:46.697
  • And then jesus, cause he's so good, he just pushes them to the
  • 00:20:46.697 --> 00:20:50.300
  • Edge of their capacity to follow him in this parable.
  • 00:20:50.300 --> 00:20:53.537
  • "and he ran," jesus says, "and he ran to his son, and he threw
  • 00:20:53.537 --> 00:20:57.307
  • His arms around him," the-- who'd been feeding pigs,
  • 00:20:57.307 --> 00:21:00.811
  • "and he kissed him."
  • 00:21:00.811 --> 00:21:02.179
  • The crowd's, like, tearing their garments and throwing dust up in
  • 00:21:02.179 --> 00:21:05.482
  • The air like, "are you kidding?
  • 00:21:05.482 --> 00:21:07.150
  • He touched his son after he's been feeding pigs and he put his
  • 00:21:07.150 --> 00:21:10.754
  • Mouth on his cheek?
  • 00:21:10.754 --> 00:21:12.089
  • This is so disgusting."
  • 00:21:12.089 --> 00:21:15.092
  • And the son immediately goes into the speech he's been
  • 00:21:15.092 --> 00:21:17.160
  • Rehearsing all the way home, "father, i have sinned against
  • 00:21:17.160 --> 00:21:19.396
  • Heaven and against you.
  • 00:21:19.396 --> 00:21:20.764
  • I'm no longer to be called your son, just make me--"
  • 00:21:20.764 --> 00:21:22.232
  • And dad's like, "shh.
  • 00:21:22.232 --> 00:21:23.567
  • Quick!
  • 00:21:23.567 --> 00:21:24.901
  • Bring the best robe and put it on him," because i'm restoring
  • 00:21:24.901 --> 00:21:28.004
  • Him to sonship.
  • 00:21:28.004 --> 00:21:29.606
  • "and put a ring on his finger," because he is my son, "and put
  • 00:21:29.606 --> 00:21:33.243
  • Sandals on his feet," because he's not a servant or a slave.
  • 00:21:33.243 --> 00:21:36.646
  • He is a member of my household.
  • 00:21:36.646 --> 00:21:39.783
  • Don't you understand that, "for this son of mine," he's been my
  • 00:21:39.783 --> 00:21:43.353
  • Son, "was dead and he's alive; he was lost to me and now
  • 00:21:43.353 --> 00:21:49.459
  • He's found!"
  • 00:21:49.459 --> 00:21:52.596
  • And i think luke would be like, "do you understand the
  • 00:21:52.596 --> 00:21:56.833
  • Implications of this story?
  • 00:21:56.833 --> 00:21:59.336
  • That god, your father, does not see good and bad people.
  • 00:21:59.336 --> 00:22:07.244
  • He sees lost to god people and found by god people."
  • 00:22:07.244 --> 00:22:14.451
  • What if we saw people in terms of lost and found, not good
  • 00:22:14.451 --> 00:22:19.456
  • And bad?
  • 00:22:19.456 --> 00:22:23.293
  • What if the church people that pushed you away had thought in
  • 00:22:23.293 --> 00:22:27.397
  • Those terms?
  • 00:22:27.397 --> 00:22:29.332
  • Now, there's another character in the story, unfortunately,
  • 00:22:29.332 --> 00:22:31.435
  • It's my character.
  • 00:22:31.435 --> 00:22:32.769
  • I hate to admit that.
  • 00:22:32.769 --> 00:22:34.104
  • The other character in the story is the well-behaved, first born,
  • 00:22:34.104 --> 00:22:36.873
  • Get it right, live within the guardrails, make dad proud, do
  • 00:22:36.873 --> 00:22:39.810
  • It by the book older brother, right,
  • 00:22:39.810 --> 00:22:42.946
  • Who made this all about behavior.
  • 00:22:42.946 --> 00:22:44.614
  • So, he's working in the fields 'cause he's doing what he's
  • 00:22:44.614 --> 00:22:46.583
  • Supposed to do, you know, making up for his younger brother
  • 00:22:46.583 --> 00:22:49.286
  • Being gone.
  • 00:22:49.286 --> 00:22:50.654
  • Comes back, here's this party, calls the servant and says,
  • 00:22:50.654 --> 00:22:52.322
  • "what in the world's going on?"
  • 00:22:52.322 --> 00:22:53.657
  • The servant's like, "hey, i got some good news and some bad
  • 00:22:53.657 --> 00:22:55.492
  • News, and they're the same news.
  • 00:22:55.492 --> 00:22:58.228
  • The good news and the bad news, which is the same news is that
  • 00:22:58.228 --> 00:23:00.630
  • Your younger brother's back, and i realized that's good news and
  • 00:23:00.630 --> 00:23:03.700
  • That's bad news."
  • 00:23:03.700 --> 00:23:05.035
  • And the older brother is furious.
  • 00:23:05.035 --> 00:23:06.403
  • He gets cleaned up, but he is not going to the party.
  • 00:23:06.403 --> 00:23:08.071
  • The dad comes out and says, "son, i mean, come in, your
  • 00:23:08.071 --> 00:23:12.242
  • Younger brother's back."
  • 00:23:12.242 --> 00:23:13.610
  • And the older brother's like, "i know he's back.
  • 00:23:13.610 --> 00:23:15.212
  • Dad, come on, seriously?"
  • 00:23:15.212 --> 00:23:16.913
  • "all these years," all this time, all these years, "i have
  • 00:23:16.913 --> 00:23:21.351
  • Been slaving for you," i have been living a right kind of
  • 00:23:21.351 --> 00:23:25.255
  • Life, "and i never disobeyed your orders.
  • 00:23:25.255 --> 00:23:28.658
  • But when this son of yours," not this brother of mine, uh-uh,
  • 00:23:28.658 --> 00:23:32.729
  • "when this son of yours who has squan--" "dad, do you know what
  • 00:23:32.729 --> 00:23:36.500
  • He's been doing, because i know what he's been up to.
  • 00:23:36.500 --> 00:23:38.835
  • "who's squandered your property," that you spent your
  • 00:23:38.835 --> 00:23:41.771
  • Entire life kind of accumulating, "squandered your
  • 00:23:41.771 --> 00:23:44.474
  • Property with prostitutes," okay?
  • 00:23:44.474 --> 00:23:46.776
  • I hope mom doesn't find out about this, "comes home, you
  • 00:23:46.776 --> 00:23:49.980
  • Kill the fattened calf for him!
  • 00:23:49.980 --> 00:23:53.083
  • I don't get it.
  • 00:23:53.083 --> 00:23:54.417
  • He doesn't deserve this."
  • 00:23:54.417 --> 00:23:56.820
  • To which if jesus was adding this part of the story, he would
  • 00:23:56.820 --> 00:23:59.456
  • Say, "who said anything about deserve?
  • 00:23:59.456 --> 00:24:02.759
  • I'm not celebrating behavior-- this has nothing to do with
  • 00:24:02.759 --> 00:24:06.563
  • Deserve or behavior.
  • 00:24:06.563 --> 00:24:08.031
  • I--we're celebrating a restored relationship," and i love this.
  • 00:24:08.031 --> 00:24:13.470
  • Jesus puts these words in the father's mouth, "i had
  • 00:24:13.470 --> 00:24:16.940
  • To celebrate."
  • 00:24:16.940 --> 00:24:19.509
  • Do you wanna know what's most valuable to you?
  • 00:24:19.509 --> 00:24:21.778
  • Look at what you celebrate.
  • 00:24:21.778 --> 00:24:24.781
  • "i had to celebrate."
  • 00:24:24.781 --> 00:24:27.217
  • "'i had to celebrate and be glad because this brother of yours
  • 00:24:27.217 --> 00:24:29.719
  • Was dead, he's alive,'" not he was bad and he's good again, he
  • 00:24:29.719 --> 00:24:33.857
