  • 00:09:07.064 --> 00:09:12.970
  • But they shouldn't have been surprised at jesus's response to
  • 00:09:12.970 --> 00:09:16.474
  • His arrest, because this is how he had lived his entire life.
  • 00:09:16.474 --> 00:09:20.444
  • This has been his posture all along, and this was the posture
  • 00:09:20.444 --> 00:09:23.280
  • That he insisted they take if they were going to be
  • 00:09:23.280 --> 00:09:27.418
  • His follower.
  • 00:09:27.418 --> 00:09:29.286
  • But it's so disturbing, it's so on everything in us for most
  • 00:09:29.286 --> 00:09:36.160
  • Of us.
  • 00:09:36.160 --> 00:09:37.628
  • And it's why most of us would rather just believe than choose
  • 00:09:37.628 --> 00:09:44.135
  • To follow.
  • 00:09:44.135 --> 00:09:45.670
  • Because following jesus will cost you something.
  • 00:09:45.670 --> 00:09:48.673
  • But it's why jesus has so many admirers and so few followers.
  • 00:09:48.673 --> 00:09:58.482
  • So here's the question.
  • 00:09:58.482 --> 00:10:00.851
  • Which one are you?
  • 00:10:00.851 --> 00:10:04.889
  • Which one am i? which, which one are we?
  • 00:10:04.889 --> 00:10:09.760
  • The way of jesus, it's disturbing, it's unnerving, it's
  • 00:10:09.760 --> 00:10:13.831
  • Really un-american, it's really kinda, if i could be honest,
  • 00:10:13.831 --> 00:10:16.467
  • It's kind of unmanly.
  • 00:10:16.467 --> 00:10:19.470
  • But when you see it played out, and when you have seen a man or
  • 00:10:19.470 --> 00:10:23.474
  • A woman react in such a way that reflects the posture of jesus,
  • 00:10:23.474 --> 00:10:27.478
  • It's, well, it's jaw dropping, it's showstopping.
  • 00:10:27.478 --> 00:10:31.315
  • Their reaction slices through the darkness.
  • 00:10:31.315 --> 00:10:35.186
  • And that's the effect that the way of jesus has when it's lived
  • 00:10:35.186 --> 00:10:39.256
  • Out in this imperfect world.
  • 00:10:39.256 --> 00:10:41.125
  • It stirs something in us.
  • 00:10:41.125 --> 00:10:43.994
  • It doesn't look weak.
  • 00:10:43.994 --> 00:10:45.563
  • In fact, for example, you should look up the story of
  • 00:10:45.563 --> 00:10:50.101
  • Rachael denhollander.
  • 00:10:50.101 --> 00:10:52.269
  • She was the person who addressed, she actually
  • 00:10:52.269 --> 00:10:55.539
  • Addressed larry nassar and during the sentencing phase of
  • 00:10:55.539 --> 00:10:58.542
  • His trial for years and years and years of sexual assault.
  • 00:10:58.542 --> 00:11:01.779
  • As you may know, rachael was the first person to publicly accuse
  • 00:11:01.779 --> 00:11:05.583
  • Larry nasser, the former usa gymnast doctor, of sexually
  • 00:11:05.583 --> 00:11:09.820
  • Abusing over 200 little girls and young women.
  • 00:11:09.820 --> 00:11:15.059
  • And you should look up her statement in the courtroom.
  • 00:11:15.059 --> 00:11:18.062
  • I was gonna read part of it.
  • 00:11:18.062 --> 00:11:19.396
  • It's so emotional.
  • 00:11:19.396 --> 00:11:20.765
  • I can't even get through the first line.
  • 00:11:20.765 --> 00:11:22.099
  • Some of you know what that first line was.
  • 00:11:22.099 --> 00:11:23.467
  • It's so powerful, it's so disarming, and i know for so
  • 00:11:23.467 --> 00:11:25.803
  • Many people, even in our audience, it's so close to the
  • 00:11:25.803 --> 00:11:28.506
  • Reality of your experience that i just don't wanna go there, but
  • 00:11:28.506 --> 00:11:31.909
  • You should look it up.
  • 00:11:31.909 --> 00:11:33.911
  • And then you should ask yourself the question, is following
  • 00:11:33.911 --> 00:11:37.681
  • Jesus weak?
  • 00:11:37.681 --> 00:11:40.184
  • Is following jesus passive?
  • 00:11:40.184 --> 00:11:43.053
  • Is following jesus a way to simply lose and to lose and to
  • 00:11:43.053 --> 00:11:48.058
  • Lose and to lose?
  • 00:11:48.058 --> 00:11:50.161
  • But when you read her words, when you read what she says
  • 00:11:50.161 --> 00:11:54.532
  • Publicly to the man that did more damage to her than anyone
  • 00:11:54.532 --> 00:11:57.902
  • That'll ever do damage to her, you just stop and stare.
  • 00:11:57.902 --> 00:12:02.940
  • It's suddenly a little light cuts through.
  • 00:12:02.940 --> 00:12:07.144
  • And here's the point.
  • 00:12:07.144 --> 00:12:09.547
  • Jesus invites all of us to be that better.
  • 00:12:09.547 --> 00:12:17.021
  • And in the end, he died that better.
  • 00:12:17.021 --> 00:12:23.294
  • Luke actually documents jesus's specific invitation to his
  • 00:12:23.294 --> 00:12:28.432
  • Followers to live that kind of life and to demonstrate
  • 00:12:28.432 --> 00:12:33.571
  • That posture.
  • 00:12:33.571 --> 00:12:34.939
  • Jesus says, okay, let me put it out there for you this way.
  • 00:12:34.939 --> 00:12:38.742
  • If any one of you, if any one of you desires to come after me,
  • 00:12:38.742 --> 00:12:43.147
  • Literally, if any of you desire to line up behind me, be a part
  • 00:12:43.147 --> 00:12:47.952
  • Of my movement and move along with me.
  • 00:12:47.952 --> 00:12:50.621
  • Yeah, that's what we wanna do, jesus.
  • 00:12:50.621 --> 00:12:51.956
  • He said, okay, then here's what you're gonna have to do.
  • 00:12:51.956 --> 00:12:54.058
  • You're going to have to--they're going to have to
  • 00:12:54.058 --> 00:12:55.593
  • Deny themselves.
  • 00:12:55.593 --> 00:12:58.028
  • It's going to require that you say no to you.
  • 00:12:58.028 --> 00:13:02.499
  • It's gonna require that you are not ruled by your appetite,
  • 00:13:02.499 --> 00:13:05.502
  • You're not ruled by your ambition, and you're not ruled
  • 00:13:05.502 --> 00:13:08.305
  • By the rules of the day.
  • 00:13:08.305 --> 00:13:11.408
  • You will neither have the opportunity to act or react like
  • 00:13:11.408 --> 00:13:16.146
  • Everybody else around you.
  • 00:13:16.146 --> 00:13:18.115
  • And then he said something that means almost nothing to us, but
  • 00:13:18.115 --> 00:13:21.218
  • It meant everything to the people in his audience.
  • 00:13:21.218 --> 00:13:23.687
  • And to be specific, you're gonna deny yourself and you're gonna
  • 00:13:23.687 --> 00:13:26.891
  • Take up a cross.
  • 00:13:26.891 --> 00:13:29.260
  • We'll take up his cross.
  • 00:13:29.260 --> 00:13:30.594
  • Now, in the 1st century, if you were carrying a cross, you
  • 00:13:30.594 --> 00:13:33.564
  • Know what that meant?
  • 00:13:33.564 --> 00:13:34.932
  • It meant that your independence had come to an end.
  • 00:13:34.932 --> 00:13:39.770
  • And then jesus adds a very disturbing but very important
  • 00:13:39.770 --> 00:13:43.874
  • Word to what he says.
  • 00:13:43.874 --> 00:13:45.910
  • This is the challenge.
  • 00:13:45.910 --> 00:13:47.511
  • This is honestly is the differentiator.
  • 00:13:47.511 --> 00:13:49.880
  • This is the difference between a believer and a follower.
  • 00:13:49.880 --> 00:13:53.951
  • This is the difference between somebody who has internalized
  • 00:13:53.951 --> 00:13:56.787
  • Their christianity because they hope it will serve them well and
  • 00:13:56.787 --> 00:13:59.957
  • Someone who is following jesus and wants to make a difference
  • 00:13:59.957 --> 00:14:02.793
  • In the world.
  • 00:14:02.793 --> 00:14:05.796
  • Daily, daily, you can pray a sinner's prayer, pray a
  • 00:14:05.796 --> 00:14:11.835
  • Salvation prayer once, but this is different.
  • 00:14:11.835 --> 00:14:15.973
  • And luke would say, and i'm telling you this is what makes
  • 00:14:15.973 --> 00:14:20.077
  • The difference, and this is what made the difference, and this is
  • 00:14:20.077 --> 00:14:23.914
  • Why the message of jesus survived the empire and survived
  • 00:14:23.914 --> 00:14:28.152
  • The temple because his followers were difference makers and they
  • 00:14:28.152 --> 00:14:31.956
  • Actually did this stuff and it caught on.
  • 00:14:31.956 --> 00:14:37.895
  • This is a daily decision.
  • 00:14:37.895 --> 00:14:40.397
  • This is every single morning, thy kingdom come, not
  • 00:14:40.397 --> 00:14:43.600
  • My kingdom.
  • 00:14:43.600 --> 00:14:44.935
  • Every single morning, thy will be done, not my will be done.
  • 00:14:44.935 --> 00:14:48.072
  • This is every single morning, in my life as it is in heaven.
  • 00:14:48.072 --> 00:14:52.176
  • Because you are my, not just my savior, not just the forgiver of
  • 00:14:52.176 --> 00:14:55.546
  • My sins, you are my lord and you are my king, and i submit all i
  • 00:14:55.546 --> 00:15:00.284
  • Am to all of you, my hands, my feet, my eyes, my ears, my
  • 00:15:00.284 --> 00:15:03.454
  • Thoughts, my resources.
  • 00:15:03.454 --> 00:15:04.855
  • I am 100% yours.
  • 00:15:04.855 --> 00:15:07.224
  • I am carrying a cross.
  • 00:15:07.224 --> 00:15:08.892
  • I am abandoning my independence.
  • 00:15:08.892 --> 00:15:18.402
  • "and follow me," because that's what it means to follow jesus.
  • 00:15:18.402 --> 00:15:25.342
  • To get in line behind him, to move along with his movement
  • 00:15:25.342 --> 00:15:28.946
  • Means i say no to me, and you say no to you, that i submit to
  • 00:15:28.946 --> 00:15:32.683
  • Him, that i literally follow.
  • 00:15:32.683 --> 00:15:36.653
  • So again, if you're a christian, if you're a believer, do you
  • 00:15:36.653 --> 00:15:41.225
  • Do that?
  • 00:15:41.225 --> 00:15:42.960
  • Do i do that?
  • 00:15:42.960 --> 00:15:44.728
  • Is that what characterizes us?
  • 00:15:44.728 --> 00:15:47.231
  • Or have we fallen into the average christian experience of
  • 00:15:47.231 --> 00:15:51.068
  • Forgive me of my sin, bless my family and thank you for the
  • 00:15:51.068 --> 00:15:54.038
  • Food, and if there's a problem, i'll let you know.
  • 00:15:54.038 --> 00:15:57.174
  • Those aren't the people that changed the world, those aren't
  • 00:15:57.174 --> 00:15:59.276
  • The people that changed anything.
  • 00:15:59.276 --> 00:16:02.679
  • And luke's like, i know it sounds like a lot.
  • 00:16:02.679 --> 00:16:05.315
  • And when he said it, it sounded like a lot and people withdrew
  • 00:16:05.315 --> 00:16:08.952
  • And people didn't get it and at the very end, i mean, luke
  • 00:16:08.952 --> 00:16:11.321
  • Documents it, the gospel writers documented.
  • 00:16:11.321 --> 00:16:13.490
  • I think peter's like, "yeah, just put it in there."
  • 00:16:13.490 --> 00:16:16.593
  • We all ran away.
  • 00:16:16.593 --> 00:16:17.961
  • It was too much for us.
  • 00:16:17.961 --> 00:16:19.296
  • We didn't wanna lose.
  • 00:16:19.296 --> 00:16:22.332
  • Because we didn't understand, we didn't understand that the
  • 00:16:22.332 --> 00:16:25.536
  • Alternative to what jesus was inviting us to do was to be
  • 00:16:25.536 --> 00:16:29.239
  • Small, to be independent and small, and to live small little
  • 00:16:29.239 --> 00:16:33.610
  • Lives that was gonna be just all about us, appetite driven,
  • 00:16:33.610 --> 00:16:37.281
  • Consumer driven, close handed, striving, you know, clinging
  • 00:16:37.281 --> 00:16:41.118
  • To things.
  • 00:16:41.118 --> 00:16:42.920
  • He says, here's how to ensure that that's not the situation
  • 00:16:42.920 --> 00:16:45.889
  • With you, "for whoever wants to save their life, he's gonna
  • 00:16:45.889 --> 00:16:51.562
  • Lose it."
  • 00:16:51.562 --> 00:16:53.464
  • Well, whatever, don't miss this, whatever you cling to diminishes
  • 00:16:53.464 --> 00:17:00.003
  • Over time, loses its value.
  • 00:17:00.003 --> 00:17:03.774
  • If you hoard seed, they don't produce a crop.
  • 00:17:03.774 --> 00:17:08.378
  • If you hoard seed, they eventually rot.
  • 00:17:08.378 --> 00:17:13.884
  • "for whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever
  • 00:17:13.884 --> 00:17:16.520
  • Loses their life for me," that is for my kingdom, for my
  • 00:17:16.520 --> 00:17:20.390
  • Adventure, for my movement, ultimately you save it.
  • 00:17:20.390 --> 00:17:25.829
  • Or as we say around here all the time, if you live for yourself,
  • 00:17:25.829 --> 00:17:28.499
  • You're only gonna have yourself to show for yourself.
  • 00:17:28.499 --> 00:17:31.535
  • Live for yourself, you're only gonna have yourself to show
  • 00:17:31.535 --> 00:17:34.471
  • For yourself.
  • 00:17:34.471 --> 00:17:35.806
  • And jesus is inviting us to sow our lives, our time, our talent,
  • 00:17:35.806 --> 00:17:40.244
  • Our resources so that there's something more to show.
  • 00:17:40.244 --> 00:17:44.214
  • To give our lives away to something other than us that's
  • 00:17:44.214 --> 00:17:47.584
  • Bigger than us so we'll have something other than us to show
  • 00:17:47.584 --> 00:17:51.255
  • For us.
  • 00:17:51.255 --> 00:17:52.656
  • And if this, come on, if this sounds threatening, if this
  • 00:17:52.656 --> 00:17:56.560
  • Sounds terrible, it's because we don't understand it.
  • 00:17:56.560 --> 00:18:01.064
  • And if this sounds threatening and terrible, it's because we've
  • 00:18:01.064 --> 00:18:03.333
  • Never seen it lived out or we haven't recognized it when we
  • 00:18:03.333 --> 00:18:05.669
  • Have, because when you see it, it is amazing, and when you see
  • 00:18:05.669 --> 00:18:08.572
  • It, it is attractive, and when you see it, you stand at a
  • 00:18:08.572 --> 00:18:11.108
  • Distance and you think, i would like to be more like that, and i
  • 00:18:11.108 --> 00:18:14.211
  • Hope i would have responded like that, and i hope i would have
  • 00:18:14.211 --> 00:18:16.713
  • Reacted like that, and i hope i could come through on the other
  • 00:18:16.713 --> 00:18:19.249
  • End and look like him and look like her and have the confidence
  • 00:18:19.249 --> 00:18:21.985
  • They have and the contentment they have.
  • 00:18:21.985 --> 00:18:23.687
  • I hope, i hope, i hope, and jesus is saying, this is what
  • 00:18:23.687 --> 00:18:26.623
  • I'm inviting you to do.
  • 00:18:26.623 --> 00:18:28.659
  • Because whatever it is you're clinging to, you're gonna lose
  • 00:18:28.659 --> 00:18:31.295
  • Anyway and whatever you're clinging to and hoping it never
  • 00:18:31.295 --> 00:18:33.664
  • Slips out of your hands, it's just going to diminish and i am
  • 00:18:33.664 --> 00:18:36.533
  • Inviting you to something bigger and something better and
  • 00:18:36.533 --> 00:18:40.771
  • Something far more significant.
  • 00:18:40.771 --> 00:18:43.140
  • It is the invitation.
  • 00:18:43.140 --> 00:18:44.541
  • It really is the invitation of a lifetime, an invitation to do
  • 00:18:44.541 --> 00:18:51.048
  • Something noticeable and noteworthy, that's not
  • 00:18:51.048 --> 00:18:53.250
  • About you.
