  • He's like, do i really put these words in the lips of jesus?
  • 00:05:22.740 --> 00:05:26.144

  • 00:05:28.346 --> 00:05:29.714

  • 00:05:29.714 --> 00:05:31.816
  • I bet he debated whether or not to include this, but he did
  • 00:05:31.816 --> 00:05:35.787
  • Because it's true.
  • 00:05:35.787 --> 00:05:37.155
  • In fact, it's statements like this next one that caused me to
  • 00:05:37.155 --> 00:05:38.756
  • Believe in the authenticity of the gospels.
  • 00:05:38.756 --> 00:05:40.324
  • They can be trusted.
  • 00:05:40.324 --> 00:05:41.659

  • 00:05:41.659 --> 00:05:45.463
  • And evaluate literature determine whether something is
  • 00:05:45.463 --> 00:05:47.498

  • Remember eeyore was kind of the negative, the downer.
  • 00:06:21.199 --> 00:06:23.100
  • And in a lot of narratives, there's always like the

  • The end is near for all of us.
  • 00:06:53.965 --> 00:06:58.202

  • These are real people.
  • 00:07:03.708 --> 00:07:05.276
  • Back to jesus's statement, "i am glad i was not there, so that
  • 00:07:05.276 --> 00:07:10.581
  • You may believe."
  • 00:07:10.581 --> 00:07:12.483
  • But here's the question.
  • 00:07:12.483 --> 00:07:13.918
  • Don't leave early.
  • 00:07:13.918 --> 00:07:15.253
  • This is so important.
  • 00:07:15.253 --> 00:07:16.754
  • Believe what?
  • 00:07:16.754 --> 00:07:19.023
  • And this is so important.
  • 00:07:19.023 --> 00:07:21.626
  • In other words, or let me put it this way, what is so important
  • 00:07:21.626 --> 00:07:25.663
  • For them to believe that he would let a friend die while the
  • 00:07:25.663 --> 00:07:30.635
  • Friend's sisters watched and waited for jesus to show up to
  • 00:07:30.635 --> 00:07:34.305
  • Save the day and jesus doesn't show up and save the day.
  • 00:07:34.305 --> 00:07:36.674
  • What could be so important for them to believe that jesus would
  • 00:07:36.674 --> 00:07:40.144
  • Allow these circumstances to play out the way they did?
  • 00:07:40.144 --> 00:07:43.214
  • And the answer to that question is related to the answer to
  • 00:07:43.214 --> 00:07:46.617
  • This question.
  • 00:07:46.617 --> 00:07:48.386
  • Who is "you"?
  • 00:07:48.386 --> 00:07:52.790
  • In other words, "i'm glad i was not there, so that you
  • 00:07:52.790 --> 00:07:55.326
  • May believe."
  • 00:07:55.326 --> 00:07:56.661
  • Well, obviously, part of the "you" was the 12 apostles
  • 00:07:56.661 --> 00:07:58.996
  • Traveling around with jesus.
  • 00:07:58.996 --> 00:08:00.731
  • But again, john wrote this many years after the event and john
  • 00:08:00.731 --> 00:08:03.234
  • Wrote this many years after the resurrection of jesus.
  • 00:08:03.234 --> 00:08:06.604
  • And the "you" here isn't just the yous in the story.
  • 00:08:06.604 --> 00:08:10.541
  • The "you" is you and you, and those of you whose faith has
  • 00:08:10.541 --> 00:08:17.181
  • Been crushed by circumstances, and those of you whose faith is
  • 00:08:17.181 --> 00:08:20.785
  • Being crushed by circumstances.
  • 00:08:20.785 --> 00:08:23.254
  • Jesus is saying, i've allowed this tragedy to play out the way
  • 00:08:23.254 --> 00:08:27.858
  • It has, so that you, anyone who hears this story and knows what
  • 00:08:27.858 --> 00:08:34.765
  • Happened will believe, will believe, will believe.
  • 00:08:34.765 --> 00:08:39.637
  • Andy: hey, i wanted to take just a minute to address a growing
  • 00:08:40.938 --> 00:08:43.774
  • Crisis in america.
  • 00:08:43.774 --> 00:08:45.142
  • Did you know that nearly 75 million americans have no
  • 00:08:45.142 --> 00:08:48.379
  • Religious affiliation, none whatsoever?
  • 00:08:48.379 --> 00:08:50.781
  • Most of us know some of these people.
  • 00:08:50.781 --> 00:08:52.216
  • Many of us are related to some of these people.
  • 00:08:52.216 --> 00:08:54.218
  • So for us, they aren't statistics, they're people we
  • 00:08:54.218 --> 00:08:57.021
  • Love and would love to see return to faith in jesus.
  • 00:08:57.021 --> 00:09:00.224
  • So, at "your move," we are committed to reaching people
  • 00:09:00.224 --> 00:09:03.160
  • With the teaching of jesus right where they are and when they
  • 00:09:03.160 --> 00:09:06.464
  • Least expect it.
  • 00:09:06.464 --> 00:09:07.865
  • We use a research-backed digital strategy that's already making
  • 00:09:07.865 --> 00:09:11.502
  • A difference.
  • 00:09:11.502 --> 00:09:12.870
  • So if you'll stick around after today's message, we would love
  • 00:09:12.870 --> 00:09:14.772
  • To tell you more about it, or visit the website or call the
  • 00:09:14.772 --> 00:09:18.109
  • Number on your screen to learn how you can be a part of this
  • 00:09:18.109 --> 00:09:20.945
  • Revolutionary approach to introducing and reintroducing
  • 00:09:20.945 --> 00:09:24.482
  • People to jesus.
  • 00:09:24.482 --> 00:09:27.051
  • Andy: so jesus engineered-- think about it.
  • 00:09:27.051 --> 00:09:29.186
  • Jesus engineered a heartbreaking set of circumstances to address
  • 00:09:29.186 --> 00:09:32.590
  • Our "where's god when we need god" circumstances.
  • 00:09:32.590 --> 00:09:35.459
  • That's what this is--
  • 00:09:35.459 --> 00:09:36.827
  • That jesus engineered this, so that in the moment of our
  • 00:09:36.827 --> 00:09:40.031
  • Where's god when i need god?
  • 00:09:40.031 --> 00:09:41.399
  • Where's god when my sister-in-law needs god?
  • 00:09:41.399 --> 00:09:43.734
  • Where's god when my brother needs god?
  • 00:09:43.734 --> 00:09:45.436
  • Where's god when my child needs god?
  • 00:09:45.436 --> 00:09:47.338
  • In our "where's god when i need god?" moments, jesus engineered
  • 00:09:47.338 --> 00:09:52.176
  • These circumstances, this narrative for you.
  • 00:09:52.176 --> 00:09:57.348
  • Do you remember, if you know the story, do you remember what
  • 00:09:57.348 --> 00:09:58.949
  • Happens next?
  • 00:09:58.949 --> 00:10:00.284
  • So they get up and they go to bethany.
  • 00:10:00.284 --> 00:10:01.619
  • Meanwhile, jerusalem, the city of jerusalem is about 2 miles
  • 00:10:01.619 --> 00:10:03.921
  • Away from bethany.
  • 00:10:03.921 --> 00:10:05.256
  • So all of these mourners and all these people have come from
  • 00:10:05.256 --> 00:10:07.692
  • Jerusalem to support lazarus's sisters, mary and martha, in
  • 00:10:07.692 --> 00:10:11.429
  • Their grief, because he's a well-known citizen in the area.
  • 00:10:11.429 --> 00:10:14.632
  • So there's lots of people.
  • 00:10:14.632 --> 00:10:16.634
  • So mary and martha are in the home, and they're grieving and
  • 00:10:16.634 --> 00:10:18.903
  • They're crying, and there're these mourners, and a servant
  • 00:10:18.903 --> 00:10:21.906
  • Shows up at the door and says, "mary and martha, the rabbi is
  • 00:10:21.906 --> 00:10:26.177
  • On his way.
  • 00:10:26.177 --> 00:10:27.545
  • He's coming down the road.
  • 00:10:27.545 --> 00:10:28.879
  • He'll be here in just a few minutes."
  • 00:10:28.879 --> 00:10:30.581
  • And you remember maybe what happens next, right?
  • 00:10:30.581 --> 00:10:34.819
  • Martha, martha decides she's gonna go see him.
  • 00:10:34.819 --> 00:10:39.857
  • And when she does, she expresses what many of us have expressed
  • 00:10:39.857 --> 00:10:43.794
  • And what many of us are expressing right now because god
  • 00:10:43.794 --> 00:10:46.097
  • Has not come through or seemingly not come through.
  • 00:10:46.097 --> 00:10:48.466
  • "martha said to jesus, 'if you had been here, my brother would
  • 00:10:48.466 --> 00:10:55.573
  • Not have died.'"
  • 00:10:55.573 --> 00:11:01.045
  • Translated.
  • 00:11:01.045 --> 00:11:02.780
  • "this is your fault!"
  • 00:11:02.780 --> 00:11:07.184
  • Because you could have kept this from happening.
  • 00:11:07.184 --> 00:11:11.222
  • Look up here.
  • 00:11:11.222 --> 00:11:12.556
  • And in this moment, we are all in the story.
  • 00:11:12.556 --> 00:11:19.029
  • In this moment, this story intersects with my story.
  • 00:11:19.029 --> 00:11:23.834
  • It intersects with your story.
  • 00:11:23.834 --> 00:11:25.202
  • If you have ever leveraged tragedy to make the point that
  • 00:11:25.202 --> 00:11:28.973
  • God doesn't care and god isn't there, if you've ever leveraged
  • 00:11:28.973 --> 00:11:32.943
  • Disappointment with god or something that's happened to
  • 00:11:32.943 --> 00:11:34.779
  • Someone you love, and you step back and you say, you know what,
  • 00:11:34.779 --> 00:11:37.214
  • If there is a loving god that wouldn't have happened.
  • 00:11:37.214 --> 00:11:39.083
  • God would have stepped in.
  • 00:11:39.083 --> 00:11:40.417
  • If god could have, god would have, and since god didn't, god
  • 00:11:40.417 --> 00:11:43.587
  • Must not even exist, or not the god i was taught to believe in
  • 00:11:43.587 --> 00:11:47.324
  • And trust as a child.
  • 00:11:47.324 --> 00:11:49.093
  • And jesus, this is what's so brilliant.
  • 00:11:49.093 --> 00:11:50.694
  • In this moment, jesus goes out of his way in this occasion to
  • 00:11:50.694 --> 00:11:54.632
  • Draw a circle large enough-- to include you and to include
  • 00:11:54.632 --> 00:12:01.438
  • Me because we are all represented by mary and martha
  • 00:12:01.438 --> 00:12:06.243
  • In the story with our disappointment, and our
  • 00:12:06.243 --> 00:12:09.346
  • Frustration, and our anger with the god who could have and
  • 00:12:09.346 --> 00:12:15.186
  • Should have but didn't.
  • 00:12:15.186 --> 00:12:18.589
  • You are included in this story, and here's why, because your
  • 00:12:18.589 --> 00:12:22.159
  • Story is included in the grand story of god's good news of
  • 00:12:22.159 --> 00:12:25.563
  • Great joy for all people, that jesus arranged this for people
  • 00:12:25.563 --> 00:12:30.034
  • Like you and for people like me that perhaps we might believe,
  • 00:12:30.034 --> 00:12:38.442
  • Or believe again, but that's the question: believe what?
  • 00:12:38.442 --> 00:12:42.079
  • You know, i'm glad i wasn't there so that you might believe.
  • 00:12:42.079 --> 00:12:45.783
  • So jesus goes on into bethany, and when martha finds out
  • 00:12:45.783 --> 00:12:51.789
  • That--when mary finds out that he's coming with martha, she
  • 00:12:51.789 --> 00:12:54.725
  • Goes out to see him as well, and she unloads on him in the
  • 00:12:54.725 --> 00:12:57.461
  • Same way.
  • 00:12:57.461 --> 00:12:58.829
  • "if you had been here, our brother wouldn't have died."
  • 00:12:58.829 --> 00:13:01.131
  • And she's weeping, weeping.
  • 00:13:01.131 --> 00:13:02.533
  • Of course, she is.
  • 00:13:02.533 --> 00:13:03.868
  • Now she's weeping because she's lost her brother.
  • 00:13:03.868 --> 00:13:05.569
  • And now, there's the anger and the frustration of being in the
  • 00:13:05.569 --> 00:13:08.839
  • Presence of the very person, who could have kept this
  • 00:13:08.839 --> 00:13:11.275
  • From happening.
  • 00:13:11.275 --> 00:13:12.643
  • Can you feel that?
  • 00:13:12.643 --> 00:13:13.978
  • Isn't that what we would have felt?
  • 00:13:13.978 --> 00:13:15.346
  • Isn't that sometimes what we do feel?
  • 00:13:15.346 --> 00:13:17.081
  • Then john says, "when jesus saw her weeping, and the judeans who
  • 00:13:17.081 --> 00:13:20.885
  • Had come along with her weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit
  • 00:13:20.885 --> 00:13:25.623
  • And he was troubled," to which, you know, the reader is
  • 00:13:25.623 --> 00:13:29.860
  • Thinking, well, if you're deeply troubled and moved in spirit,
  • 00:13:29.860 --> 00:13:33.097
  • Then, i mean, if this bothers you that much, why didn't you
  • 00:13:33.097 --> 00:13:36.000
  • Show up and keep it from happening?
  • 00:13:36.000 --> 00:13:38.435
  • And then they lead jesus to the cave where lazarus is buried.
  • 00:13:38.435 --> 00:13:44.241
  • The text tells us that he stands in front of lazarus's tomb and
  • 00:13:44.241 --> 00:13:48.646
  • "jesus wept." why?
  • 00:13:48.646 --> 00:13:54.051
  • Because mary and martha were weeping.
  • 00:13:54.051 --> 00:13:59.523
  • Mary and martha, who blamed him, were weeping.
  • 00:13:59.523 --> 00:14:04.161
  • And he enters into their pain and their frustration, and their
  • 00:14:04.161 --> 00:14:08.365
  • Loss, and their grief.
  • 00:14:08.365 --> 00:14:10.701
  • And he weeps, and he doesn't just, and it's not that his eyes
  • 00:14:10.701 --> 00:14:13.504
  • Were moist or there was a tear.
  • 00:14:13.504 --> 00:14:15.105
  • He was weeping in such a way that the entire crowd could see
  • 00:14:15.105 --> 00:14:18.509
  • Him being moved by emotion, which was not normally
  • 00:14:18.509 --> 00:14:22.579
  • Appropriate for a man to show in public.
  • 00:14:22.579 --> 00:14:24.782
  • And there's the man, the rabbi, and he's weeping in such a way
  • 00:14:24.782 --> 00:14:27.918
  • That it is public and everybody's looking at jesus.
  • 00:14:27.918 --> 00:14:31.555
  • And while it's true that jesus could have kept this from
  • 00:14:31.555 --> 00:14:33.991
  • Happening, as we see throughout the story, jesus had a different
  • 00:14:33.991 --> 00:14:37.094
  • Agenda in mind.
  • 00:14:37.094 --> 00:14:41.031
  • He had you in mind, and he had me in mind, and he had your
  • 00:14:41.031 --> 00:14:46.737
  • Sister-in-law in mind, and your father in mind.
  • 00:14:46.737 --> 00:14:50.841
  • And jesus steps up and then he does the unthinkable again.
  • 00:14:50.841 --> 00:14:53.877
  • Now we're introduced to a whole new wave of emotion.
  • 00:14:53.877 --> 00:14:57.381
  • And jesus says, "remove the stone."
  • 00:14:57.381 --> 00:15:02.286
  • Moving the stone in place was not a casual endeavor.
  • 00:15:02.286 --> 00:15:05.689
  • The stone is up above the hole, wedged with, is held by
  • 00:15:05.689 --> 00:15:09.994
  • Something that's been there for a long, long time.
  • 00:15:09.994 --> 00:15:11.795
  • They remove the wedge, and the stone actually rolls into place
  • 00:15:11.795 --> 00:15:15.265
  • And gravity is holding it wedged in, covering the front of a
  • 00:15:15.265 --> 00:15:18.702
  • Tomb, and it's supposed to stay there for a long, long time,
  • 00:15:18.702 --> 00:15:21.505
  • Maybe forever, or until they decide to remove the stone to
  • 00:15:21.505 --> 00:15:24.408
  • Take out the body or the bones and put the bones in an ossuary.
  • 00:15:24.408 --> 00:15:27.578
  • But this is a done deal.
  • 00:15:27.578 --> 00:15:29.980
  • You don't remove the stone, and you certainly don't remove the
  • 00:15:29.980 --> 00:15:33.183
  • Stone on that day.
  • 00:15:33.183 --> 00:15:36.687
  • I mean there was a gasp in the crowd when jesus announced,
  • 00:15:36.687 --> 00:15:40.824
  • Remove the stone, and now they have a decision to make.
  • 00:15:40.824 --> 00:15:45.529
  • Do we trust the rabbi who showed up late, who missed the
  • 00:15:45.529 --> 00:15:51.869
  • Opportunity, who missed the funeral?
  • 00:15:51.869 --> 00:15:55.339
  • And besides that, everybody in this audience knows, because of
  • 00:15:55.339 --> 00:15:58.742
  • How much time has gone by, lazarus is not gonna look like
  • 00:15:58.742 --> 00:16:01.979
  • Lazarus after three days in that environment, the whole body
  • 00:16:01.979 --> 00:16:04.782
  • Begins to deteriorate beyond recognition.
  • 00:16:04.782 --> 00:16:06.984
  • These funerals happened quickly.
  • 00:16:06.984 --> 00:16:10.354
  • And martha reminds jesus of this, and she reminds him of
  • 00:16:10.354 --> 00:16:14.925
  • Something else as well.
  • 00:16:14.925 --> 00:16:16.293
  • Remember what she said?
  • 00:16:16.293 --> 00:16:18.295
  • "...by this time, lord, there is a bad odor."
  • 00:16:18.295 --> 00:16:21.465
  • I mean this is a bad situation, and now you're about to--i mean,
  • 00:16:21.465 --> 00:16:25.502
  • Are you kidding us?
  • 00:16:25.502 --> 00:16:27.671
  • You are so late.
  • 00:16:27.671 --> 00:16:29.039
  • "there's a bad odor, for he has been in there four days."
  • 00:16:29.039 --> 00:16:33.911
  • Lord, you weren't a day late.
  • 00:16:33.911 --> 00:16:36.914
  • You weren't two days late.
  • 00:16:36.914 --> 00:16:38.415
  • You didn't simply miss his final moments with us as we held him
  • 00:16:38.415 --> 00:16:41.685
  • In our arms.
  • 00:16:41.685 --> 00:16:43.887
  • You are four days late.
  • 00:16:43.887 --> 00:16:48.592
  • And jesus says, "remove the stone anyway."
  • 00:16:48.592 --> 00:16:53.297
  • It's about to become horrible insult to injury.
  • 00:16:53.297 --> 00:16:57.968
  • Can you imagine this emotion?
  • 00:16:57.968 --> 00:17:00.104
  • Do we do this or not?
  • 00:17:00.104 --> 00:17:02.406
  • And then this is my favorite part of what happened.
  • 00:17:02.406 --> 00:17:05.876
  • Jesus begins to pray, and he prays out loud, so loud,
  • 00:17:05.876 --> 00:17:11.381
  • Everyone can hear his prayer because he wanted everyone to
  • 00:17:11.381 --> 00:17:14.051
  • Hear his prayer, and my friends, he wanted us to hear
  • 00:17:14.051 --> 00:17:18.388
  • This prayer.
  • 00:17:18.388 --> 00:17:20.057
  • So, as they're beginning to remove the stone, this took
  • 00:17:20.057 --> 00:17:22.292
  • Maybe an hour, maybe longer.
  • 00:17:22.292 --> 00:17:25.262
  • Here's what jesus prays, so that everyone can hear, so that john
  • 00:17:25.262 --> 00:17:28.465
  • Could record it, so that we could read it.
  • 00:17:28.465 --> 00:17:31.435
  • "then jesus looked up," because isn't that what we do in times
  • 00:17:31.435 --> 00:17:34.738
  • Of grief?
  • 00:17:34.738 --> 00:17:36.807
  • "father, i thank you that you have heard me."
  • 00:17:36.807 --> 00:17:42.179
  • He'd already been praying.
  • 00:17:42.179 --> 00:17:44.081
  • "i knew, i knew that you always hear me, but" i am saying this,
  • 00:17:44.081 --> 00:17:49.019
  • Or "i said this for the benefit of the people standing here..."
  • 00:17:49.019 --> 00:17:53.724
  • The people navigating circumstances that is slowly
  • 00:17:53.724 --> 00:17:57.127
  • Crushing their faith, the people navigating circumstances in the
  • 00:17:57.127 --> 00:18:00.264
  • Past that totally crushed their faith,
  • 00:18:00.264 --> 00:18:03.734
  • Circumstances that are too hard, too heavy, wondering if god
  • 00:18:03.734 --> 00:18:06.503
  • Cares, wondering if god hears your prayers, wondering if god
  • 00:18:06.503 --> 00:18:09.139
  • Is angry with you, wondering if you did something wrong,
  • 00:18:09.139 --> 00:18:11.441
  • Wondering if you could have done something right that would have
  • 00:18:11.441 --> 00:18:13.377
  • Kept these things from happening, or maybe wondering if
  • 00:18:13.377 --> 00:18:16.613
  • All of this is just fiction, stories, children's stories to
  • 00:18:16.613 --> 00:18:21.351
  • Keep us in line.
  • 00:18:21.351 --> 00:18:23.253
  • He says, "i knew, i knew that you always hear me, but i said
  • 00:18:23.253 --> 00:18:27.057
  • This for the benefit of the people standing here, that they
  • 00:18:27.057 --> 00:18:30.227
  • May believe..."
  • 00:18:30.227 --> 00:18:32.763
  • And once again, believe what?
  • 00:18:32.763 --> 00:18:36.833
  • "i'm glad i was not there, so that you might believe."
  • 00:18:36.833 --> 00:18:41.004
  • Believe what?
  • 00:18:41.004 --> 00:18:43.907
  • And here it is.
  • 00:18:43.907 --> 00:18:45.342
  • And this is a big it, "that they may believe that you sent me."
  • 00:18:45.342 --> 00:18:55.886
  • Okay, jesus, you're telling me, you're telling us that you
  • 00:18:55.953 --> 00:18:59.990
  • Engineered this entire scenario, this entire event.
  • 00:18:59.990 --> 00:19:04.928
  • You engineered this because this was all about who sent you?
  • 00:19:04.928 --> 00:19:09.733
  • Jesus would say yes.
  • 00:19:09.733 --> 00:19:11.268
  • Well, jesus, is that such a big deal that it's worth all of this
  • 00:19:11.268 --> 00:19:15.005
  • Drama and all of this pain and all of this grief?
  • 00:19:15.005 --> 00:19:18.675
  • Jesus would say, yeah, and here's why because this is
  • 00:19:18.675 --> 00:19:24.348
  • So important.
  • 00:19:24.348 --> 00:19:25.682
  • If the father sent the son to show us--we talk about this all
  • 00:19:25.682 --> 00:19:30.487
  • The time.
  • 00:19:30.487 --> 00:19:31.855
  • I don't know if this has gotten from your head to your
  • 00:19:31.855 --> 00:19:33.457
  • Heart yet.
  • 00:19:33.457 --> 00:19:34.791
  • If the father sent the son to show us what the father is like,
  • 00:19:34.791 --> 00:19:38.662
  • Then you can rest assured that the father weeps with you in
  • 00:19:38.662 --> 00:19:46.336
  • Your pain, regardless of your blame.
  • 00:19:46.336 --> 00:19:50.374
  • And this is jesus's point.
  • 00:19:50.374 --> 00:19:51.708
  • If the father sent the son to represent the father, then you
  • 00:19:51.708 --> 00:19:54.745
  • Can know with certainty that god's circumstances are not an
  • 00:19:54.745 --> 00:19:57.814
  • Indicator of god's absence or god's silence.
  • 00:19:57.814 --> 00:20:00.183
  • But you can rest with, you can live with the certainty that god
  • 00:20:00.183 --> 00:20:03.253
  • And the assurance that god has entered into your pain with you
  • 00:20:03.253 --> 00:20:06.323
  • Because this is what the son did and the father sent the son to
  • 00:20:06.323 --> 00:20:09.626
  • Demonstrate his love and his compassion and his care for you
  • 00:20:09.626 --> 00:20:14.665
  • And for me and this is most--maybe more important.
  • 00:20:14.665 --> 00:20:18.669
  • If the father sent the son, if this is what jesus wants us to
  • 00:20:18.669 --> 00:20:22.472
  • Believe, if this whole thing was arranged to prove the fact that
  • 00:20:22.472 --> 00:20:25.208
  • The father sent the son, if the father sent the son, and the
  • 00:20:25.208 --> 00:20:29.146
  • Father has the power to do what the son is about to do,
  • 00:20:29.146 --> 00:20:33.917
  • There's hope.
  • 00:20:33.917 --> 00:20:35.352
  • There's the assurance of god's presence and the assurance of
  • 00:20:35.352 --> 00:20:38.455
  • God's promise about your future and the future of those that
  • 00:20:38.455 --> 00:20:43.894
  • You love.
  • 00:20:43.894 --> 00:20:45.262
  • And so with it, jesus takes a deep breath, and he calls out
  • 00:20:45.262 --> 00:20:48.532
  • Loud, not because somebody couldn't hear him that needs to
  • 00:20:48.532 --> 00:20:51.101
  • Hear him, but because he wanted the crowd to hear him.
  • 00:20:51.101 --> 00:20:53.170
  • And "jesus called in a loud voice, 'lazarus, come out!'
  • 00:20:53.170 --> 00:20:59.576
  • And the dead man came out."
  • 00:20:59.576 --> 00:21:02.713
  • And i'm absolutely confident there were people in the
  • 00:21:02.713 --> 00:21:05.315
  • Audience who passed out in that moment.
  • 00:21:05.315 --> 00:21:10.053
  • Therefore, this isn't a surprise.
  • 00:21:10.053 --> 00:21:13.323
  • "therefore, many of the judeans who had come to visit mary, and
  • 00:21:13.323 --> 00:21:16.626
  • Who had seen what jesus did, believed in him."
  • 00:21:16.626 --> 00:21:19.663
  • Oh yes, they did.
  • 00:21:19.663 --> 00:21:21.832
  • And what did they believe?
  • 00:21:21.832 --> 00:21:24.234
  • They believed exactly what jesus wanted them to believe.
  • 00:21:24.234 --> 00:21:26.703
  • Oh my goodness, no mere mortal can call a man who's been dead
  • 00:21:26.703 --> 00:21:32.042
  • For four days back to life.
  • 00:21:32.042 --> 00:21:33.910
  • Clearly, this man has been sent to us by god.
  • 00:21:33.910 --> 00:21:39.383
  • So what he says can be trusted.
  • 00:21:39.383 --> 00:21:41.885
  • What he's promised can be trusted.
  • 00:21:41.885 --> 00:21:43.987
  • Who he says our heavenly father is can be trusted.
  • 00:21:43.987 --> 00:21:46.690
  • And if the father is like the son, and the son is
  • 00:21:46.690 --> 00:21:49.393
  • Demonstrating the love and the compassion and the concern of
  • 00:21:49.393 --> 00:21:51.762
  • The father, then there's hope, even in the darkest of our
  • 00:21:51.762 --> 00:21:56.733
  • Nights, in the most dire circumstances.
  • 00:21:56.733 --> 00:22:00.604
  • "i'm glad i was not there, so that you may believe."
  • 00:22:00.604 --> 00:22:09.346
  • I'm glad he wasn't there either because now i can believe he's
  • 00:22:09.346 --> 00:22:16.153
  • Here with me, and he's there with you.
  • 00:22:16.153 --> 00:22:19.089
  • And he included us in the story, so that we can face tomorrow
  • 00:22:19.089 --> 00:22:24.828
  • With confidence and hope, knowing that we are part of the
  • 00:22:24.828 --> 00:22:29.466
  • Story of god's good news, of great joy for all people.
  • 00:22:29.466 --> 00:22:33.069
  • I'm glad he wasn't there either, because now we know.
  • 00:22:33.069 --> 00:22:37.174
  • Now we know that circumstances, circumstances are not an
  • 00:22:37.174 --> 00:22:41.044
  • Indicator of god's absence, or a lack of concern or a lack
  • 00:22:41.044 --> 00:22:46.416
  • Of compassion.
  • 00:22:46.416 --> 00:22:47.784
  • I mean think about this.
  • 00:22:47.784 --> 00:22:49.119
  • If the empathy, if the empathy and the compassion, if the
  • 00:22:49.119 --> 00:22:53.256
  • Empathy, the compassion, and the concern of the son reflects the
  • 00:22:53.256 --> 00:22:55.792
  • Empathy and the compassion and the concern of the father, then
  • 00:22:55.792 --> 00:23:03.633
  • What the apostle peter would later write is true, and peter
  • 00:23:03.633 --> 00:23:06.169
  • Was there and saw this as well.
  • 00:23:06.169 --> 00:23:08.205
  • And then peter after this, after the resurrection, suffered all
  • 00:23:08.205 --> 00:23:10.874
  • Kinds of things and lost his friend.
  • 00:23:10.874 --> 00:23:12.209
  • He lost james, the brother of jesus.
  • 00:23:12.209 --> 00:23:13.543
  • He lost james, the other apostle.
  • 00:23:13.543 --> 00:23:15.645
  • There was so much confusion.
  • 00:23:15.645 --> 00:23:16.980
  • And yet at the end, peter's like, "hey, but you don't need
  • 00:23:16.980 --> 00:23:19.149
  • To put your eyes on any of that.
  • 00:23:19.149 --> 00:23:20.484
  • Don't confuse your life with the love of god.
  • 00:23:20.484 --> 00:23:22.786
  • Don't confuse life with god.
  • 00:23:22.786 --> 00:23:24.387
  • Don't confuse the circumstances of life with god's love and
  • 00:23:24.387 --> 00:23:27.357
  • God's concern."
  • 00:23:27.357 --> 00:23:28.692
  • Peter would say, "i know better, i've seen better, and there is
  • 00:23:28.692 --> 00:23:30.627
  • Hope for you."
  • 00:23:30.627 --> 00:23:31.995
  • And he writes to christians in the first century, he says,
  • 00:23:31.995 --> 00:23:33.630
  • Here's the right response.
  • 00:23:33.630 --> 00:23:35.031
  • Humble yourself.
  • 00:23:35.031 --> 00:23:36.633
  • "humble yourselves, therefore, under god's mighty hand," that
  • 00:23:36.633 --> 00:23:39.236
  • Is surrender yourself to your loving and compassionate
  • 00:23:39.236 --> 00:23:42.038
  • Heavenly father "that he may lift you up," there's hope, "in
  • 00:23:42.038 --> 00:23:47.277
  • Due time."
  • 00:23:47.277 --> 00:23:48.778
  • And then this, "cast--" that is, throw upon, throw all of your
  • 00:23:48.778 --> 00:23:54.117
  • Merimna, and i use the greek term because there are so many
  • 00:23:54.117 --> 00:23:57.120
  • English terms packed in this powerful word.
  • 00:23:57.120 --> 00:23:59.322
  • He says, i want you to cast all of your worry, all of your
  • 00:23:59.322 --> 00:24:02.526
  • Cares, all of your anxiety, all of your anger, all of your
  • 00:24:02.526 --> 00:24:06.062
  • Frustration, all of your angst, all the stuff that you bring and
  • 00:24:06.062 --> 00:24:10.133
  • Are afraid to bring to god at times.
  • 00:24:10.133 --> 00:24:11.468
  • He says, "no, your heavenly father can handle it."
  • 00:24:11.468 --> 00:24:14.337
  • You bring all of that and you cast your cares on him because
  • 00:24:14.337 --> 00:24:17.340
  • When you do, you honor him with your pain, and you honor him
  • 00:24:17.340 --> 00:24:21.344
  • With your frustration, and you honor him by saying to him, "i
  • 00:24:21.344 --> 00:24:24.681
  • Am in need, and i believe that you can do something about it."
  • 00:24:24.681 --> 00:24:27.651
  • And peter says, "i've seen this.
  • 00:24:27.651 --> 00:24:29.219
  • I've witnessed this.
  • 00:24:29.219 --> 00:24:30.554
  • You just bring it on, and you dump it on your heavenly father,
  • 00:24:30.554 --> 00:24:34.224
  • Because you can know for certain he cares for you, 'because he
  • 00:24:34.224 --> 00:24:41.665
  • Cares for you.'"
  • 00:24:41.665 --> 00:24:46.169
  • Now, i know it's easy for me to stand up here and say, right?
  • 00:24:46.169 --> 00:24:50.307
  • And i haven't heard your story, but i've experienced it, to
  • 00:24:50.307 --> 00:24:54.878
  • Some degree.
  • 00:24:54.878 --> 00:24:56.212
  • But more than that, i have walked with people who've
  • 00:24:56.212 --> 00:24:58.081
  • Experienced it to an extraordinary degree.
  • 00:24:58.081 --> 00:24:59.716
  • In fact, my friend shirley, who i didn't tell shirley i was
  • 00:24:59.716 --> 00:25:02.986
  • Gonna mention her name today.
  • 00:25:02.986 --> 00:25:04.721
  • I did the funeral for both of her sons.
  • 00:25:04.721 --> 00:25:06.323
  • They were both friends of mine, one in 2020, one this year, her
  • 00:25:06.323 --> 00:25:09.926
  • Only kids.
  • 00:25:09.926 --> 00:25:11.628
  • My friend mary anne, who's here, who lost and buried two
  • 00:25:11.628 --> 00:25:15.699
  • Daughters over the course of time from the--one was
  • 00:25:15.699 --> 00:25:18.068
  • A teenager.
  • 00:25:18.068 --> 00:25:19.402
  • One was an adult.
  • 00:25:19.402 --> 00:25:20.770
  • And they didn't get a miracle.
  • 00:25:20.770 --> 00:25:22.973
  • They didn't get a resurrection, but they are confident there
  • 00:25:22.973 --> 00:25:27.944
  • Was one.
  • 00:25:27.944 --> 00:25:29.946
  • And they are confident it's not the last one.
  • 00:25:29.946 --> 00:25:33.883
  • And their hope, their hope, the source of their strength, they
  • 00:25:33.883 --> 00:25:37.854
  • Would tell you, is that jesus came from the father to
  • 00:25:37.854 --> 00:25:42.359
  • Demonstrate what god the father is like.
  • 00:25:42.359 --> 00:25:45.295
  • And they have held onto that like many of you have through
  • 00:25:45.295 --> 00:25:48.765
  • Extraordinary circumstances, extraordinary pain and
  • 00:25:48.765 --> 00:25:52.402
  • Extraordinary grief.
  • 00:25:52.402 --> 00:25:53.737
  • And you have found your heavenly father to be as faithful as
  • 00:25:53.737 --> 00:25:58.208
  • Jesus was faithful to those he loved.
  • 00:25:58.208 --> 00:26:01.945
  • And now, you're invited, or for some of you, you're invited
  • 00:26:01.945 --> 00:26:06.049
  • Back, because it's just been too hard to maintain faith.
  • 00:26:06.049 --> 00:26:09.252
  • You are invited, or you're invited back to cast all of your
  • 00:26:09.252 --> 00:26:13.123
  • Care, and all of your grief, and all of your sorrow, and all of
  • 00:26:13.123 --> 00:26:16.760
  • Your anger and all of your frustration on him.
  • 00:26:16.760 --> 00:26:20.664
  • And you can know with certainty he cares for you because god
  • 00:26:20.664 --> 00:26:28.838
  • Sent the son to illustrate and demonstrate that for us.
  • 00:26:28.838 --> 00:26:35.011
  • And that's the invitation.
  • 00:26:35.011 --> 00:26:36.946
  • And that's where peace is found.
  • 00:26:36.946 --> 00:26:40.050
  • That's where grace is experienced.
  • 00:26:40.050 --> 00:26:42.619
  • That's where you learn to be able to sleep at night.
  • 00:26:42.619 --> 00:26:45.255
  • That's when you learn that you can hold on to god when it
  • 00:26:45.255 --> 00:26:50.827
  • Appears that god is no longer holding on to you.
  • 00:26:50.827 --> 00:26:56.700
  • And we'll pick it up right there, next time, in part two,
  • 00:26:56.700 --> 00:27:00.837
  • "under the circumstances."
  • 00:27:00.837 --> 00:27:03.707
  • Andy: hey, thanks so much for watching.
  • 00:27:04.674 --> 00:27:06.342
  • You may find it hard to believe that 75 million americans claim
  • 00:27:06.342 --> 00:27:09.813
  • No religious affiliation.
  • 00:27:09.813 --> 00:27:11.948
  • On a personal note, perhaps you found it nearly impossible to
  • 00:27:11.948 --> 00:27:14.984
  • Believe that your son or your daughter or perhaps a grandchild
  • 00:27:14.984 --> 00:27:17.954
  • Drifted away from faith as part of that number.
  • 00:27:17.954 --> 00:27:20.757
  • This is a crisis culturally and perhaps for you, it's a
