Dr. Alveda King Explains How We Are All One Race.
February is Black History Month, which celebrates African-American heritage and looks back on people that were and are still so important to our country. From Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to Frederick Douglass to Maya Angelou, and countless others, the legacy left by these individuals continues to be important to us as our nation seeks to heal from division and hurt.
For much of American history, African-Americans were subject to slavery or segregation. It’s only been 55 years since African-Americans have legally had equal rights. That’s less than 25% of our history as a country. Over 30% of our country (baby boomers and older) were alive at the time of segregation.
In this episode of Praise, Dr. Alveda King (niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.), Samuel Rodriguez, Robert Morris, and Lee Jenkins tackle the sin of racism and the church’s role in reconciling God’s people to one another.
As Christians, it’s up to us to dialogue and have deep—at times painful—discussions about racism. May this month be used to reflect on the achievements of African-Americans and may healthy conversations on racial reconciliation be held in Jesus’ name!
