We Serve a God Who Restores
In an instant, life can bring catastrophes that leave us empty and feeling hopeless. Right now, we witness this across the world, and our hearts break. We see this in Job’s life as well. God interrupted Job’s life and allowed him to experience a period of suffering even though Job was blameless and upright in God’s eyes.
Why Did This Occur?
In Job 2, the story begins with Satan accusing Job of being God’s faithful follower solely because of the blessings he received. Satan tells God to let Job suffer and then his “true righteousness” will be revealed. In Job 2:6 God agrees by saying, “Very well, then, he is in your hands; but you must spare his life.”
During this time, Job goes through a series of misfortunes. He suffers from painful sores, then loses his family, and all of his possessions. This devastation takes Job through an emotional rollercoaster ride. In Job 3, he curses his birth and wishes he had died coming out of the womb. In Job 29-31, he asserts his innocence and demands an explanation from God.
Have You Ever Felt This Hopeless?
In the midst of hard seasons, it’s easy to give up and blame God. However, He is sovereign over everything and promises to never leave us. In Job 40, God reveals to Job that He is Creator of all. Thus, invoking in Job a sense of humility because he learned that God is greater than his circumstances.
It’s hard to reconcile with the injustices we experience in our world. However, God reminded Job that He is in the midst of all creation and His plan exceeded the physical limitations on earth.
The story concludes with God rewarding Job with a gift. In Job 42:10, “the Lord restored his fortunes and gave him twice as much as he had before.” This is a beautiful reminder that when life gets interrupted, God is always working!
