  • Unto the lord.
  • 00:07:06.849 --> 00:07:08.217
  • When hezekiah received a threatening letter, we read in
  • 00:07:08.217 --> 00:07:11.420
  • Isaiah 37:14, he spread it out before the lord.

  • Stayed where he was for the next two days."
  • 00:09:04.700 --> 00:09:08.204
  • I'd underline that.
  • 00:09:08.204 --> 00:09:09.905
  • "although jesus loved martha, mary, and lazarus, he stayed
  • 00:09:09.905 --> 00:09:14.210
  • Where he was for the next two days.
  • 00:09:14.210 --> 00:09:16.445
  • Finally, he said to his disciples, 'let's go to judea.'"
  • 00:09:16.445 --> 00:09:23.419
  • Wow, wait, he loved them, so he stayed two days?
  • 00:09:23.419 --> 00:09:29.959
  • And so by the time he arrives, of course, lazarus has died, but
  • 00:09:29.959 --> 00:09:35.931
  • This is a question we ask: "if god really loved me, why did he
  • 00:09:35.931 --> 00:09:38.968
  • Let this happen?"
  • 00:09:38.968 --> 00:09:40.970
  • But here's--we're gonna see in a few moments.
  • 00:09:40.970 --> 00:09:43.205
  • Jesus was gonna do abundantly above and beyond that which they
  • 00:09:43.205 --> 00:09:47.443
  • Could ask or think.
  • 00:09:47.443 --> 00:09:49.045
  • They wanted a healing, he wanted a resurrection.
  • 00:09:49.045 --> 00:09:53.816
  • So sometimes you're praying for something, and you're telling
  • 00:09:53.816 --> 00:09:56.652
  • The lord what you think he should do, and that's okay, but
  • 00:09:56.652 --> 00:10:00.656
  • That doesn't mean he's going to do it.
  • 00:10:00.656 --> 00:10:02.291
  • You can say whatever you want to him, but you must recognize that
  • 00:10:02.291 --> 00:10:06.195
  • He's looking at the big picture while you and i are looking at
  • 00:10:06.195 --> 00:10:09.665
  • The small picture.
  • 00:10:09.665 --> 00:10:11.167
  • And he had another purpose in mind for all of this, so he
  • 00:10:11.167 --> 00:10:14.870
  • Intentionally delays.
  • 00:10:14.870 --> 00:10:17.540
  • And when he finally arrives, they're devastated because their
  • 00:10:17.540 --> 00:10:22.878
  • Brother has died.
  • 00:10:22.878 --> 00:10:24.246
  • So not only did he not heal their brother as they were
  • 00:10:24.246 --> 00:10:26.749
  • Hoping he would, but he even missed the funeral.
  • 00:10:26.749 --> 00:10:31.087
  • Lazarus was buried.
  • 00:10:31.087 --> 00:10:32.521
  • It was over with.
  • 00:10:32.521 --> 00:10:33.889
  • John 11, verse 20, "then martha, as soon as she heard jesus was
  • 00:10:33.889 --> 00:10:38.327
  • Coming, went and met him, but mary was sitting in the house.
  • 00:10:38.327 --> 00:10:41.697
  • Then martha said to jesus, 'lord, if you had been here, my
  • 00:10:41.697 --> 00:10:45.668
  • Brother would not have died.
  • 00:10:45.668 --> 00:10:48.471
  • But even now i know that whatever you ask of god, he'll
  • 00:10:48.471 --> 00:10:51.207
  • Give you.'
  • 00:10:51.207 --> 00:10:52.541
  • And jesus said to her, 'your brother will rise again.'
  • 00:10:52.541 --> 00:10:56.846
  • Martha said to him, 'i know he'll rise again in the
  • 00:10:56.846 --> 00:10:59.148
  • Resurrection of the last day.'
  • 00:10:59.148 --> 00:11:01.117
  • Jesus said, 'i am the resurrection and the life.
  • 00:11:01.117 --> 00:11:04.320
  • He that believes in me, though he were dead, yet he shall live.
  • 00:11:04.320 --> 00:11:08.524
  • And whosoever lives and believes in me shall never die.
  • 00:11:08.524 --> 00:11:12.628
  • Do you believe this?'"
  • 00:11:12.628 --> 00:11:13.996
  • Wow, so martha's pretty direct.
  • 00:11:13.996 --> 00:11:16.999
  • She's pretty accusatory, even critical, to his face.
  • 00:11:16.999 --> 00:11:22.772
  • "lord, if you would have been here, my brother would not have
  • 00:11:22.772 --> 00:11:25.975
  • Died," which brings up a very important point: in your
  • 00:11:25.975 --> 00:11:29.311
  • Prayers, you can be honest to god.
  • 00:11:29.311 --> 00:11:31.180
  • You think you're gonna say something that will shock him?
  • 00:11:31.180 --> 00:11:34.650
  • Have you ever read the psalms of david where he laments?
  • 00:11:34.650 --> 00:11:39.054
  • He laments about what's happening in his life, he
  • 00:11:39.054 --> 00:11:42.124
  • Complains about the hardships that he's facing, but then often
  • 00:11:42.124 --> 00:11:46.328
  • He will correct his own thinking.
  • 00:11:46.328 --> 00:11:48.364
  • You know, he'll say, "why art thou cast down, o my soul?
  • 00:11:48.364 --> 00:11:51.233
  • Hope thou in god."
  • 00:11:51.233 --> 00:11:52.601
  • But prior to that, he's talking about how hard everything is
  • 00:11:52.601 --> 00:11:55.771
  • For him.
  • 00:11:55.771 --> 00:11:57.106
  • So a prayer is just honest communication to god.
  • 00:11:57.106 --> 00:12:01.210
  • Friends can tell friends the truth, and the lord listens.
  • 00:12:01.210 --> 00:12:06.515
  • And martha's accusatory in a way.
  • 00:12:06.515 --> 00:12:08.417
  • "if you would have been here, my brother would not have died."
  • 00:12:08.417 --> 00:12:10.820
  • But i love how she then corrects it and says, "however, i know
  • 00:12:10.820 --> 00:12:15.825
  • Even now whatever you ask of god, he'll give it to you."
  • 00:12:15.825 --> 00:12:19.562
  • But this reminds us of a couple of very important things
  • 00:12:19.562 --> 00:12:22.097
  • When christ says, "i am the resurrection and the life.
  • 00:12:22.097 --> 00:12:25.668
  • He that believes in me, though he were dead, yet shall he
  • 00:12:25.668 --> 00:12:28.037
  • Live," and that is that death is not the end.
  • 00:12:28.037 --> 00:12:31.507
  • It's a transition from this life to the afterlife.
  • 00:12:31.507 --> 00:12:35.010
  • Death does not have the final word, christ does.
  • 00:12:35.010 --> 00:12:40.282
  • We must remember that.
  • 00:12:40.282 --> 00:12:43.819
  • And the final word he gives to us is, "he that lives and
  • 00:12:43.819 --> 00:12:46.956
  • Believes in me shall never die."
  • 00:12:46.956 --> 00:12:49.592
  • You say, "well, what are you talking about?
  • 00:12:49.592 --> 00:12:51.026
  • Of course we die."
  • 00:12:51.026 --> 00:12:52.361
  • Well, yes, in one sense we do.
  • 00:12:52.361 --> 00:12:54.663
  • Our body is laid in the ground, but the bible promises, one day,
  • 00:12:54.663 --> 00:12:59.668
  • We will be resurrected.
  • 00:12:59.668 --> 00:13:01.170
  • Our soul, our spirit, goes immediately into the presence
  • 00:13:01.170 --> 00:13:05.307
  • Of god.
  • 00:13:05.307 --> 00:13:06.675
  • What happens to a christian when they die?
  • 00:13:06.675 --> 00:13:08.510
  • They go into god's presence.
  • 00:13:08.510 --> 00:13:10.312
  • Paul said to be absent from the body is to be present with
  • 00:13:10.312 --> 00:13:14.283
  • The lord.
  • 00:13:14.283 --> 00:13:15.618
  • At one point, he wrote, "i have a desire to depart and be with
  • 00:13:15.618 --> 00:13:19.255
  • Christ, which is far better."
  • 00:13:19.255 --> 00:13:21.991
  • And the point is that if he were to die, he would immediately go
  • 00:13:21.991 --> 00:13:25.027
  • To be with christ, and that is the hope that every christian
  • 00:13:25.027 --> 00:13:28.030
  • Has, that the moment you take your last breath on earth, you
  • 00:13:28.030 --> 00:13:31.533
  • Take your first breath in heaven.
  • 00:13:31.533 --> 00:13:33.636
  • You close your eyes on earth, and you open them in heaven.
  • 00:13:33.636 --> 00:13:38.107
  • So this is a promise that god has given to all of us.
  • 00:13:38.107 --> 00:13:42.478
  • And i love this verse in john chapter 11, and i love to quote
  • 00:13:42.478 --> 00:13:48.617
  • It, and i love to think about it, and i just feel like there's
  • 00:13:48.617 --> 00:13:52.588
  • So much in it, and it's helped me on many occasions.
  • 00:13:52.588 --> 00:13:56.158
  • I mentioned our son going to be with the lord, and there was a
  • 00:13:56.158 --> 00:13:59.595
  • Time not long after it happened, and i was driving along, and i
  • 00:13:59.595 --> 00:14:03.632
  • Saw something that triggered a memory about him.
  • 00:14:03.632 --> 00:14:08.904
  • And i actually said, "i'll never see him again.
  • 00:14:08.904 --> 00:14:12.508
  • I'll never hear his voice again."
  • 00:14:12.508 --> 00:14:14.743
  • And then i just preached to myself.
  • 00:14:14.743 --> 00:14:17.646
  • I said, "greg, shut up."
  • 00:14:17.646 --> 00:14:20.182
  • It's kind of fun to tell yourself to shut up.
  • 00:14:20.182 --> 00:14:23.185
  • "don't use the words 'shut up.'"
  • 00:14:23.185 --> 00:14:25.321
  • I used it because sometimes people need to just shut up.
  • 00:14:25.321 --> 00:14:30.459
  • "greg, shut up," i said.
  • 00:14:30.459 --> 00:14:33.062
  • Jesus said, "i am the resurrection and the life.
  • 00:14:33.062 --> 00:14:35.698
  • He that believes in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live.
  • 00:14:35.698 --> 00:14:38.934
  • And whosoever lives and believes in me shall never die."
  • 00:14:38.934 --> 00:14:42.371
  • And, immediately, it corrected my thinking.
  • 00:14:42.371 --> 00:14:46.275
  • Immediately, even my emotion changed.
  • 00:14:46.275 --> 00:14:48.544
  • So it won't always change, i have to be honest.
  • 00:14:48.544 --> 00:14:51.080
  • But it changed my perspective in a nanosecond.
  • 00:14:51.080 --> 00:14:54.984
  • That's right.
  • 00:14:54.984 --> 00:14:56.318
  • I had to remind myself of the promise of god.
  • 00:14:56.318 --> 00:15:00.322
  • But we felt this way.
  • 00:15:00.322 --> 00:15:01.690
  • "lord, where were you?
  • 00:15:01.690 --> 00:15:03.225
  • Where were you when my marriage dissolved?
  • 00:15:03.225 --> 00:15:06.662
  • Where were you when my parents divorced?
  • 00:15:06.662 --> 00:15:09.365
  • Where were you when my child went astray?
  • 00:15:09.365 --> 00:15:12.067
  • Where were you when my loved one died?"
  • 00:15:12.067 --> 00:15:15.838
  • Well, he was there with you, and he will always be with you, and
  • 00:15:15.838 --> 00:15:20.242
  • You should bring your needs and your concerns and your questions
  • 00:15:20.242 --> 00:15:24.346
  • To god.
  • 00:15:24.346 --> 00:15:25.981
  • But now, mary is going to approach, and she's going to say
  • 00:15:25.981 --> 00:15:32.087
  • Something very similar to martha.
  • 00:15:32.087 --> 00:15:34.623
  • Drop down to verse 32.
  • 00:15:34.623 --> 00:15:36.492
  • "then, when mary came to where jesus was, and saw him, she fell
  • 00:15:36.492 --> 00:15:40.062
  • Down at his feet, saying to him, 'lord, if you would have been
  • 00:15:40.062 --> 00:15:42.865
  • Here, my brother would not have died.'
  • 00:15:42.865 --> 00:15:45.167
  • Jesus, therefore, when he saw her weeping, and the jews who
  • 00:15:45.167 --> 00:15:49.438
  • Came with her weeping, he groaned in the spirit and
  • 00:15:49.438 --> 00:15:52.775
  • Was troubled.
  • 00:15:52.775 --> 00:15:54.309
  • And he said, 'where have you laid him?'
  • 00:15:54.309 --> 00:15:56.712
  • And they said, 'lord, come and see.'
  • 00:15:56.712 --> 00:15:59.114
  • Jesus wept.
  • 00:15:59.114 --> 00:16:00.716
  • Then the jews said, 'see how he loved him!'"
  • 00:16:00.716 --> 00:16:04.386
  • "jesus wept," the shortest verse in the bible.
  • 00:16:04.386 --> 00:16:07.456
  • Don't tell me you can't memorize scriptures.
  • 00:16:07.456 --> 00:16:11.627
  • Say, "jesus wept," go.
  • 00:16:11.627 --> 00:16:12.961
  • Congregation: "jesus wept."
  • 00:16:12.961 --> 00:16:14.296
  • Greg: "jesus wept."
  • 00:16:14.296 --> 00:16:15.798
  • Okay, so now you know a bible verse, at least one, right?
  • 00:16:15.798 --> 00:16:19.935
  • You can memorize more as well.
  • 00:16:19.935 --> 00:16:21.870
  • You'd be surprised how much you can memorize.
  • 00:16:21.870 --> 00:16:25.307
  • But i love that statement, "jesus wept."
  • 00:16:25.307 --> 00:16:29.178
  • You know, we don't think of jesus weeping, but here he
  • 00:16:29.178 --> 00:16:33.282
  • Was weeping.
  • 00:16:33.282 --> 00:16:34.650
  • And why was he weeping?
  • 00:16:34.650 --> 00:16:35.984
  • Well, his heart was broken.
  • 00:16:35.984 --> 00:16:39.421
  • He knows what it's like to feel our pain and sorrows.
  • 00:16:39.421 --> 00:16:43.092
  • He knows what it's like to lose a son.
  • 00:16:43.092 --> 00:16:46.762
  • He saw his own son beaten beyond human recognition and crucified
  • 00:16:46.762 --> 00:16:51.900
  • On a roman cross.
  • 00:16:51.900 --> 00:16:54.169
  • Of jesus, the bible says in isaiah 53, "he was despised and
  • 00:16:54.169 --> 00:16:58.273
  • Rejected--a man of sorrows, acquainted with
  • 00:16:58.273 --> 00:17:01.710
  • The bitterest grief.
  • 00:17:01.710 --> 00:17:03.445
  • We turned our back on him and looked the other way.
  • 00:17:03.445 --> 00:17:06.448
  • When he went by, he was despised, and we did not care.
  • 00:17:06.448 --> 00:17:09.985
  • Yet it was our weaknesses he carried, it was our sorrows that
  • 00:17:09.985 --> 00:17:14.690
  • Weighed him down."
  • 00:17:14.690 --> 00:17:16.558
  • So when you go to jesus with your heartache and with your
  • 00:17:16.558 --> 00:17:19.361
  • Pain, know that he's been there, he's walked in your shoes, and
  • 00:17:19.361 --> 00:17:24.133
  • Then some.
  • 00:17:24.133 --> 00:17:25.534
  • So you can bring your needs to him.
  • 00:17:25.534 --> 00:17:28.604
  • And jesus voluntarily put himself in the way of danger as
  • 00:17:28.604 --> 00:17:33.775
  • He bore our sins on the cross, and he bears our sorrows
  • 00:17:33.775 --> 00:17:38.780
  • As well.
  • 00:17:38.780 --> 00:17:40.115
  • And why would he do this?
  • 00:17:40.115 --> 00:17:41.483
  • The answer is given in hebrews 2, verse 17.
  • 00:17:41.483 --> 00:17:44.753
  • "it was necessary for jesus to be in every respect like us.
  • 00:17:44.753 --> 00:17:49.091
  • That's why he had to enter into every detail of human life.
  • 00:17:49.091 --> 00:17:53.195
  • And when he came before god as high priest to get rid of
  • 00:17:53.195 --> 00:17:55.531
  • People's sins, he would have already experienced it all
  • 00:17:55.531 --> 00:18:00.602
  • Himself--all the pain, the testing--and would be able to
  • 00:18:00.602 --> 00:18:03.705
  • Help where help was needed."
  • 00:18:03.705 --> 00:18:06.708
  • So death breaks god's heart.
  • 00:18:06.708 --> 00:18:09.344
  • Why did he weep?
  • 00:18:09.344 --> 00:18:10.712
  • Because he was heartbroken as well.
  • 00:18:10.712 --> 00:18:12.881
  • Let's go back to the text.
  • 00:18:12.881 --> 00:18:14.283
  • John 11:33, and then i'm gonna read verse 38.
  • 00:18:14.283 --> 00:18:18.921
  • Verse 33, "when jesus saw her weeping and the other people
  • 00:18:18.921 --> 00:18:22.791
  • Wailing with her, he was moved with indignation and he was
  • 00:18:22.791 --> 00:18:26.094
  • Deeply troubled."
  • 00:18:26.094 --> 00:18:27.462
  • And drop down to verse 38, "and jesus, deeply troubled, they
  • 00:18:27.462 --> 00:18:30.766
  • Came to the grave, and it was a cave with a stone rolled across
  • 00:18:30.766 --> 00:18:35.637
  • Its entrance."
  • 00:18:35.637 --> 00:18:37.139
  • Now, this word "troubled" could be translated he was mad.
  • 00:18:37.139 --> 00:18:41.710
  • So he was sad, and he was mad at the same time.
  • 00:18:41.710 --> 00:18:46.148
  • Who is jesus angry with?
  • 00:18:46.148 --> 00:18:48.183
  • The mourners?
  • 00:18:48.183 --> 00:18:49.518
  • No.
  • 00:18:49.518 --> 00:18:50.886
  • Mary and martha?
  • 00:18:50.886 --> 00:18:52.221
  • Again, no.
  • 00:18:52.221 --> 00:18:53.555
  • Jesus is angry with the grim reaper, if you will.
  • 00:18:53.555 --> 00:18:56.758
  • He's angry with death itself, and he tells them to remove the
  • 00:18:56.758 --> 00:19:01.863
  • Stone blocking the tomb.
  • 00:19:01.863 --> 00:19:04.333
  • Martha protests, knowing that her brother's body is already in

  • Would you want to be raised from the dead?

  • 00:21:17.332 --> 00:21:18.700
  • Now, the question is, would we like our loved ones who have
  • 00:21:18.700 --> 00:21:21.370
  • Died and are in heaven to come back to us?
  • 00:21:21.370 --> 00:21:23.705
  • Yes, we would.
  • 00:21:23.705 --> 00:21:25.140

  • I don't think they would.
  • 00:21:36.618 --> 00:21:38.053
  • And so, lazarus had to be raised up, which is a great miracle,
  • 00:21:38.053 --> 00:21:44.459
  • But poor lazarus, he had to die twice.
  • 00:21:44.459 --> 00:21:48.530
  • Once isn't bad enough.
  • 00:21:48.530 --> 00:21:50.699
  • Yeah, you're gonna die another time.
  • 00:21:50.699 --> 00:21:52.434
  • So this poor guy, but anyway, he--you know, what choice did
  • 00:21:52.434 --> 00:21:55.604
  • He have, you know?
  • 00:21:55.604 --> 00:21:57.272
  • "lazarus, come forth."
  • 00:21:57.272 --> 00:21:58.840
  • It's a good thing jesus said, "lazarus, come forth."
  • 00:21:58.840 --> 00:22:01.510
  • If he would have just said, "come forth," every body in
  • 00:22:01.510 --> 00:22:04.713
  • Every grave would have burst out.
  • 00:22:04.713 --> 00:22:07.282
  • No, i'm talking about lazarus, from bethany in particular.
  • 00:22:07.282 --> 00:22:12.120
  • And out comes lazarus, obviously wrapped in the bandages that
  • 00:22:12.120 --> 00:22:16.425
  • They would use in the burial process.
  • 00:22:16.425 --> 00:22:18.827
  • So he's almost--it's a little comical to me.
  • 00:22:18.827 --> 00:22:22.030
  • He's coming out, it's not, "hello, ta-da!"
  • 00:22:22.030 --> 00:22:24.499
  • You know, he's more like... "someone unwrap me."
  • 00:22:24.499 --> 00:22:28.837
  • "unwrap him," jesus says.
  • 00:22:28.837 --> 00:22:31.440
  • So he's brought back to life, and it's a great miracle, and
  • 00:22:31.440 --> 00:22:35.143
  • Everyone is rejoicing.
  • 00:22:35.143 --> 00:22:37.379
  • But it is in these hardships that we go through in life that
  • 00:22:37.379 --> 00:22:41.583
  • We somehow develop a greater dependence upon god, and we
  • 00:22:41.583 --> 00:22:47.756
  • Learn to trust him even more.
  • 00:22:47.756 --> 00:22:49.825
  • In fact, you could even say through hardship, we
  • 00:22:49.825 --> 00:22:53.528
  • Develop hope.
  • 00:22:53.528 --> 00:22:55.764
  • Romans 5:3 says, "only in tribulations does this happen,
  • 00:22:55.764 --> 00:23:01.403
  • Because tribulation produces perseverance; perseverance,
  • 00:23:01.403 --> 00:23:05.440
  • Character; and character, hope."
  • 00:23:05.440 --> 00:23:08.076
  • Here's the bottom line: hope grows in the garden of pain.
  • 00:23:08.076 --> 00:23:12.414
  • And so lazarus went to the other side, and he came back again.
  • 00:23:12.414 --> 00:23:18.487
