  • 00:17:32.617 --> 00:17:33.985
  • Oh no.
  • 00:17:33.985 --> 00:17:35.353
  • Jesus said, "fear not little flock for it is your father's
  • 00:17:35.353 --> 00:17:39.057
  • Good pleasure to give you the kingdom."
  • 00:17:39.057 --> 00:17:42.060
  • I love that.
  • 00:17:42.060 --> 00:17:43.394
  • It's his good pleasure.
  • 00:17:43.394 --> 00:17:45.096
  • He loves to give you these things.
  • 00:17:45.096 --> 00:17:46.697
  • He loves to bless you.
  • 00:17:46.697 --> 00:17:48.766
  • Heard a story about a very wise father whose son was
  • 00:17:48.766 --> 00:17:51.903
  • Going to leave for college and the father said,
  • 00:17:51.903 --> 00:17:54.672
  • "son, i'm gonna pay all of your bills for college.
  • 00:17:54.672 --> 00:17:57.675
  • I want you to just study hard and enjoy the process.
  • 00:17:57.675 --> 00:18:01.913
  • But i'm just gonna do this, every month i'll give you
  • 00:18:01.913 --> 00:18:05.249
  • Your check with this condition, you have to come home
  • 00:18:05.249 --> 00:18:08.753
  • In person and get your check.
  • 00:18:08.753 --> 00:18:10.822
  • I'm not gonna mail it to some address, you come home
  • 00:18:10.822 --> 00:18:13.424
  • And i'll write you your check."
  • 00:18:13.424 --> 00:18:15.393
  • That son came home every single month, right?
  • 00:18:15.393 --> 00:18:19.163
  • So god says to us, "i'm gonna provide for you, but i want you
  • 00:18:19.163 --> 00:18:22.834
  • To keep coming to me for it."
  • 00:18:22.834 --> 00:18:25.069
  • God doesn't give us everything we want in one big lump sum.
  • 00:18:25.069 --> 00:18:28.906
  • "here's all of your blessings, all of your healings,
  • 00:18:28.906 --> 00:18:31.809
  • All of your provision, kaboom."
  • 00:18:31.809 --> 00:18:34.112
  • No, he says, "i want you to keep coming to me over
  • 00:18:34.112 --> 00:18:37.081
  • And over again so you remember who gave it to you."
  • 00:18:37.081 --> 00:18:39.951
  • Remember in the lord's prayer, jesus taught us to pray.
  • 00:18:39.951 --> 00:18:43.554
  • "give us this day our daily bread."
  • 00:18:43.554 --> 00:18:46.858
  • So that's the principle here.
  • 00:18:46.858 --> 00:18:48.693
  • So mark gives us a little detail in his version of the feeding of
  • 00:18:48.693 --> 00:18:52.930
  • The 5,000 and he tells that jesus had the people sit down
  • 00:18:52.930 --> 00:18:57.368
  • In groups of 50 and a hundred.
  • 00:18:57.368 --> 00:18:59.470
  • So it was very organized.
  • 00:18:59.470 --> 00:19:01.472
  • And then mark describes it this way, "jesus took five loaves and
  • 00:19:01.472 --> 00:19:04.675
  • Two fish looked up to heaven, asked god's blessing on the
  • 00:19:04.675 --> 00:19:08.079
  • Food, breaking the loaves into pieces and kept giving the bread
  • 00:19:08.079 --> 00:19:12.917
  • And fish to the disciples to give to the people."
  • 00:19:12.917 --> 00:19:16.654
  • It's not like jesus just extended his hand and there
  • 00:19:16.654 --> 00:19:19.590
  • Was a mountain of bread, bread.
  • 00:19:19.590 --> 00:19:22.860
  • Now here's a mountain of fish, fish.
  • 00:19:22.860 --> 00:19:26.030
  • No, he says, "just fill the baskets.
  • 00:19:26.030 --> 00:19:27.932
  • Distribute it." they'd go distribute it.
  • 00:19:27.932 --> 00:19:30.434
  • Come back. "oh, there's more?
  • 00:19:30.434 --> 00:19:32.236
  • Yeah, just keep giving it out." this is how he did it.
  • 00:19:32.236 --> 00:19:34.772
  • Listen to this, god gives you what you need when you need it.
  • 00:19:34.772 --> 00:19:40.144
  • Not necessarily before and never after, okay.
  • 00:19:40.144 --> 00:19:44.715
  • So sometimes you'll look at somebody going through
  • 00:19:44.715 --> 00:19:46.851
  • Some hardship.
  • 00:19:46.851 --> 00:19:48.319
  • You'll say, "man, i could never do what they're doing."
  • 00:19:48.319 --> 00:19:50.721
  • Yeah, you could.
  • 00:19:50.721 --> 00:19:52.123
  • If god had you go through that hardship, he would
  • 00:19:52.123 --> 00:19:54.725
  • Give you the strength you need to deal with it.
  • 00:19:54.725 --> 00:19:57.695
  • He's giving you the strength you need to deal
  • 00:19:57.695 --> 00:20:00.031
  • With what you are facing right here, right now.
  • 00:20:00.031 --> 00:20:03.434
  • That's what he did for us.
  • 00:20:03.434 --> 00:20:05.469
  • So in the same way, we need to come to god and offer
  • 00:20:05.469 --> 00:20:09.273
  • What we have and let him multiply it.
  • 00:20:09.273 --> 00:20:14.011
  • Gifts from god don't come fully developed,
  • 00:20:14.011 --> 00:20:16.581
  • You have to start somewhere.
  • 00:20:16.581 --> 00:20:19.383
  • You know, you have to cultivate your gift.
  • 00:20:19.383 --> 00:20:21.719
  • If you're a musician, you practice,
  • 00:20:21.719 --> 00:20:23.621
  • If you're an artist, you practice.
  • 00:20:23.621 --> 00:20:25.957
  • Ever since i was a little kid, i always loved to draw.
  • 00:20:25.957 --> 00:20:29.327
  • And for me, my little cartoon world was a place for me to
  • 00:20:29.327 --> 00:20:33.965
  • Escape to when i was waiting for my mother to be done
  • 00:20:33.965 --> 00:20:38.236
  • In some smoke-filled bar.
  • 00:20:38.236 --> 00:20:41.105
  • And so you know, my mom was married and divorced seven times
  • 00:20:41.105 --> 00:20:44.475
  • And she had a lot of boyfriends in between.
  • 00:20:44.475 --> 00:20:47.144
  • So one day she brings home a man who says he's
  • 00:20:47.144 --> 00:20:51.215
  • An animator for disney.
  • 00:20:51.215 --> 00:20:53.451
  • I didn't believe him.
  • 00:20:53.451 --> 00:20:55.253
  • He says, "no, i'm an animator for disney."
  • 00:20:55.253 --> 00:20:57.321
  • And i said, "prove it."
  • 00:20:57.321 --> 00:20:59.257
  • He pulls out a pencil and he draws a perfect donald duck.
  • 00:20:59.257 --> 00:21:03.160
  • By the way, donald duck is very hard to draw.
  • 00:21:03.160 --> 00:21:06.130
  • And i was, "whoa, wow."
  • 00:21:06.130 --> 00:21:08.666
  • And he said, "i'll tell you what greg, this is a magic pencil."
  • 00:21:08.666 --> 00:21:12.270
  • This is a true story.
  • 00:21:12.270 --> 00:21:14.338
  • "this is a magic pencil and if you place it under your pillow
  • 00:21:14.338 --> 00:21:18.109
  • When you wake up in the morning,
  • 00:21:18.109 --> 00:21:19.710
  • You will be able to draw just like me.
  • 00:21:19.710 --> 00:21:22.079
  • So go to bed now."
  • 00:21:22.079 --> 00:21:25.349
  • Now as an adult, i look back on that and say,
  • 00:21:25.349 --> 00:21:27.551
  • "uh-uh, i know what that was all about."
  • 00:21:27.551 --> 00:21:31.255
  • But i believed him.
  • 00:21:31.255 --> 00:21:33.024
  • Sadly, i was 30.
  • 00:21:33.024 --> 00:21:37.094
  • Not really, i was 28.
  • 00:21:37.094 --> 00:21:38.863
  • But still, no, i was very, very little.
  • 00:21:38.863 --> 00:21:42.433
  • I put that pencil under my pillow,
  • 00:21:42.433 --> 00:21:44.535
  • I was so excited i could hardly sleep.
  • 00:21:44.535 --> 00:21:47.204
  • I woke up the next morning, grabbed the pencil,
  • 00:21:47.204 --> 00:21:49.607
  • Went over to a piece of paper, i'm gonna draw donald duck.
  • 00:21:49.607 --> 00:21:52.009
  • It was the same old me 'cause gifts don't come
  • 00:21:52.009 --> 00:21:55.579
  • Fully developed, you have to cultivate them.
  • 00:21:55.579 --> 00:21:58.783
  • That's why paul wrote in 2 timothy 1:6
  • 00:21:58.783 --> 00:22:01.619
  • "fan into flames the spiritual gift that god has given to you."
  • 00:22:01.619 --> 00:22:07.692
  • Now, without question, this became
  • 00:22:07.692 --> 00:22:10.227
  • The most popular miracle of jesus.
  • 00:22:10.227 --> 00:22:14.131
  • It's sort of like the people would say,
  • 00:22:14.131 --> 00:22:15.733
  • "hey, water into wine, that's good.
  • 00:22:15.733 --> 00:22:18.869
  • Restore restoration of sight, all these things,
  • 00:22:18.869 --> 00:22:21.739
  • They're all good but free lunch?
  • 00:22:21.739 --> 00:22:23.507
  • Now we're talking."
  • 00:22:23.507 --> 00:22:25.643
  • In fact, we like this so much.
  • 00:22:25.643 --> 00:22:28.312
  • We wanna make you our king.
  • 00:22:28.312 --> 00:22:30.014
  • Understand that jewish people are under
  • 00:22:30.014 --> 00:22:32.550
  • The control of the romans.
  • 00:22:32.550 --> 00:22:36.187
  • They believe jesus is a militant messiah, a political savior,
  • 00:22:36.187 --> 00:22:42.026
  • Someone that's gonna deliver them from the power
  • 00:22:42.026 --> 00:22:45.029
  • And tyranny of rome.
  • 00:22:45.029 --> 00:22:46.397
  • So they said, "we want you to be our king right now."
  • 00:22:46.397 --> 00:22:50.201
  • Look at john 6 verse 14, "when the people saw jesus
  • 00:22:50.201 --> 00:22:52.837
  • Do this miraculous sign, they exclaimed,
  • 00:22:52.837 --> 00:22:55.539
  • 'he's a prophet we have been expecting.'
  • 00:22:55.539 --> 00:22:58.209
  • And when jesus saw they were ready to force him
  • 00:22:58.209 --> 00:23:01.345
  • To be their king, he slipped away into the hills by himself."
  • 00:23:01.345 --> 00:23:06.484
  • Forced him to be their king.
  • 00:23:06.484 --> 00:23:09.620
  • The whole idea is laughable.
  • 00:23:09.620 --> 00:23:11.856
  • See, these people wanted to use god
  • 00:23:11.856 --> 00:23:14.658
  • Instead of being used by god.
  • 00:23:14.658 --> 00:23:18.095
  • They wanted god to do what they wanted him to do.
  • 00:23:18.095 --> 00:23:21.365
  • Listen, god wants to use us, but having said that,
  • 00:23:21.365 --> 00:23:24.635
  • He will never be used.
  • 00:23:24.635 --> 00:23:27.171
  • That's what they were doing. so let's wrap this up.
  • 00:23:27.171 --> 00:23:30.007
  • What are some takeaway truths from this story?
  • 00:23:30.007 --> 00:23:33.444
  • There will come times in our lives and we are utterly
  • 00:23:33.444 --> 00:23:35.946
  • Overwhelmed by our problems, by our challenges,
  • 00:23:35.946 --> 00:23:40.151
  • And by our hardships.
  • 00:23:40.151 --> 00:23:42.653
  • We will not have the abilities or the resources to respond
  • 00:23:42.653 --> 00:23:46.824
  • Things that are beyond your control,
  • 00:23:46.824 --> 00:23:49.160
  • Tests that will come to you in life.
  • 00:23:49.160 --> 00:23:53.030
  • These tests are given to determine if you're learning
  • 00:23:53.030 --> 00:23:56.500
  • Anything as a christian.
  • 00:23:56.500 --> 00:23:59.203
  • Why does god allow us to be tested?
  • 00:23:59.203 --> 00:24:01.639
  • James 2 gives us the answer.
  • 00:24:01.639 --> 00:24:03.574
  • When he says, "dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of
  • 00:24:03.574 --> 00:24:06.210
  • Any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy.
  • 00:24:06.210 --> 00:24:11.415
  • For you know when your faith is tested, your endurance
  • 00:24:11.415 --> 00:24:14.084
  • Has a chance to grow.
  • 00:24:14.084 --> 00:24:16.587
  • So let it grow for when your endurance is fully developed,
  • 00:24:16.587 --> 00:24:19.623
  • You'll be perfect and complete needing nothing."
  • 00:24:19.623 --> 00:24:22.760
  • As i've said before, trials and tests in the life of the
  • 00:24:22.760 --> 00:24:27.565
  • Christian are like god's gym.
  • 00:24:27.565 --> 00:24:30.367
  • Your broken down to be built up.
  • 00:24:30.367 --> 00:24:33.370
  • So when you go to a gym and you lift weights and you do
  • 00:24:33.370 --> 00:24:36.974
  • Repetitions, and then you get stronger, and then you lift more
  • 00:24:36.974 --> 00:24:39.944
  • Weight, and then you in time lift even more weight,
  • 00:24:39.944 --> 00:24:42.513
  • You're building your muscle up by first tearing it down.
  • 00:24:42.513 --> 00:24:46.383
  • The same is true in the tests of life.
  • 00:24:46.383 --> 00:24:48.118
  • "why am i going through this?
  • 00:24:48.118 --> 00:24:49.453
  • I don't see any reason for this."
  • 00:24:49.453 --> 00:24:50.888
  • Don't you know god is making you stronger?
  • 00:24:50.888 --> 00:24:53.991
  • "why do i go through these things?"
  • 00:24:53.991 --> 00:24:55.793
  • So my endurance may grow.
  • 00:24:55.793 --> 00:24:59.029
  • One translation, i believe it's a philip's translation of that
  • 00:24:59.029 --> 00:25:02.466
  • Verse i just read from james 2 says, "when trials come
  • 00:25:02.466 --> 00:25:06.570
  • Into your life, my brothers don't treat them as intruders,
  • 00:25:06.570 --> 00:25:10.641
  • But friends."
  • 00:25:10.641 --> 00:25:12.676
  • Could you think of the trial you're going through
  • 00:25:12.676 --> 00:25:15.179
  • As a friend instead of an intruder?
  • 00:25:15.179 --> 00:25:18.682
  • Could you think of the hardship you're facing
  • 00:25:18.682 --> 00:25:21.118
  • As something that god can use?
  • 00:25:21.118 --> 00:25:23.354
  • Like when that unexpected bill or expense comes and you wonder,
  • 00:25:23.354 --> 00:25:27.625
  • How will i ever pay this?
  • 00:25:27.625 --> 00:25:29.326
  • When you have that crisis with your spouse and you wonder,
  • 00:25:29.326 --> 00:25:32.630
  • How will we ever get through this?
  • 00:25:32.630 --> 00:25:35.432
  • When that perfect child of yours gets themselves
  • 00:25:35.432 --> 00:25:38.302
  • Into trouble and you wonder, how will we resolve this?
  • 00:25:38.302 --> 00:25:43.541
  • When a loved one dies unexpectedly and you wonder,
  • 00:25:43.541 --> 00:25:47.478
  • How will i survive this?
  • 00:25:47.478 --> 00:25:49.980
  • Know this, god is able to meet whatever comes your way
  • 00:25:49.980 --> 00:25:54.785
  • Because god is able.
  • 00:25:54.785 --> 00:25:57.254
  • Greg: hi, i'm greg laurie, i've got some good news for you.
  • 00:26:01.158 --> 00:26:03.894
  • God loves you, and god has a plan for your life.
  • 00:26:03.894 --> 00:26:08.265
  • Here's the problem: we're separated from god by our sin
  • 00:26:08.265 --> 00:26:11.635
  • Because we've all broken his commandments.
  • 00:26:11.635 --> 00:26:14.638
  • But the good news is that 2,000 years ago, god sent
  • 00:26:14.638 --> 00:26:17.775
  • His son, jesus christ, to die on the cross for your sin,
  • 00:26:17.775 --> 00:26:22.112
  • And then to rise again from the dead.
  • 00:26:22.112 --> 00:26:24.815
  • The same jesus who died and rose is alive and ready
