  • 00:08:41.010 --> 00:08:42.979
  • Is the destruction of his flesh.
  • 00:08:42.979 --> 00:08:45.881
  • "i have turned him over to satan
  • 00:08:45.881 --> 00:08:48.651
  • For the destruction of his flesh
  • 00:08:48.651 --> 00:08:51.687
  • So that his spirit may be saved
  • 00:08:51.687 --> 00:08:54.457
  • In the day of the lord jesus christ."
  • 00:08:54.457 --> 00:08:57.059
  • What does he mean, "his flesh be destroyed?"
  • 00:08:57.059 --> 00:09:00.529
  • I think this phrase, "the destruction of his flesh,"
  • 00:09:00.529 --> 00:09:04.333
  • Might be best paraphrased,
  • 00:09:04.333 --> 00:09:06.535
  • Until his flesh gets its fill of sin.
  • 00:09:06.535 --> 00:09:11.273
  • In other words, if this person will not repent of this sin
  • 00:09:11.273 --> 00:09:16.012
  • That is destroying the reputation of christ in this church,
  • 00:09:16.012 --> 00:09:19.348
  • You turn him out of the church into the world
  • 00:09:19.348 --> 00:09:22.952
  • Until he gets his fill of sin,
  • 00:09:22.952 --> 00:09:27.390
  • Until satan can have his way with this person
  • 00:09:27.390 --> 00:09:30.426
  • And completely break him
  • 00:09:30.426 --> 00:09:32.928
  • So that his spirit might be saved.
  • 00:09:32.928 --> 00:09:36.666
  • You know, those of you who are parents,
  • 00:09:36.666 --> 00:09:39.068
  • Some of you have had this experience,
  • 00:09:39.068 --> 00:09:41.303
  • This heartbreaking experience of having a child
  • 00:09:41.303 --> 00:09:43.873
  • Who is so rebellious that you had to come to the point
  • 00:09:43.873 --> 00:09:46.842
  • That you said, "you know what?
  • 00:09:46.842 --> 00:09:48.678
  • If you're going to rebel against me and god,
  • 00:09:48.678 --> 00:09:50.946
  • You're going to have to do it outside of this house."
  • 00:09:50.946 --> 00:09:54.383
  • And you turn them out of your house.
  • 00:09:54.383 --> 00:09:56.118
  • It's the most painful thing any parent can do
  • 00:09:56.118 --> 00:09:59.588
  • Because when you turn a child out of your house
  • 00:09:59.588 --> 00:10:02.191
  • Into the world, you open themself,
  • 00:10:02.191 --> 00:10:03.993
  • You open them up to every kind of evil imaginable.
  • 00:10:03.993 --> 00:10:08.197
  • But the only reason you do that
  • 00:10:08.197 --> 00:10:09.865
  • Is because you know that the consequence
  • 00:10:09.865 --> 00:10:11.967
  • Of allowing them to continue in the rebellion
  • 00:10:11.967 --> 00:10:15.771
  • Is even more severe.
  • 00:10:15.771 --> 00:10:17.673
  • And sometimes, we have to do that in the church.
  • 00:10:18.641 --> 00:10:20.710
  • Sometimes we say we care too much about you
  • 00:10:20.710 --> 00:10:23.946
  • And your future to allow you to go on sinning.
  • 00:10:23.946 --> 00:10:26.916
  • We care too much about our church
  • 00:10:26.916 --> 00:10:28.651
  • To allow you to continue to cause a disruption.
  • 00:10:28.651 --> 00:10:31.554
  • And because of that, we're going to turn you
  • 00:10:31.554 --> 00:10:33.522
  • Out of the church into the world
  • 00:10:33.522 --> 00:10:35.791
  • Until you're ready to repent, until you're broken.
  • 00:10:35.791 --> 00:10:39.061
  • Isn't that what happened with the prodigal son?
  • 00:10:39.061 --> 00:10:41.597
  • It was only when he got his fill of sin in the world
  • 00:10:41.597 --> 00:10:45.668
  • That he came back to the father.
  • 00:10:45.668 --> 00:10:47.470
  • I think that's what paul has in mind here.
  • 00:10:47.470 --> 00:10:50.139
  • What is his motive for doing this?
  • 00:10:50.139 --> 00:10:51.907
  • Notice there are always two motives for church discipline.
  • 00:10:51.907 --> 00:10:56.345
  • First of all, to restore the sinner's relationship with god.
  • 00:10:56.345 --> 00:11:01.684
  • Remember this, if you don't hear anything else,
  • 00:11:02.685 --> 00:11:03.986
  • Church discipline is not about retribution,
  • 00:11:03.986 --> 00:11:07.223
  • It's about restoration.
  • 00:11:07.223 --> 00:11:09.191
  • Now the reason we engage in this form of extreme discipline
  • 00:11:10.359 --> 00:11:13.963
  • Is not because we're mad at people,
  • 00:11:13.963 --> 00:11:15.397
  • Not because we hate people,
  • 00:11:15.397 --> 00:11:16.966
  • Not because we have a personal vendetta against people,
  • 00:11:16.966 --> 00:11:19.702
  • But it is always restoration that is the goal.
  • 00:11:19.702 --> 00:11:22.738
  • That's what paul said here, we have "his flesh destroyed,
  • 00:11:22.738 --> 00:11:26.275
  • That his spirit might be saved."
  • 00:11:26.275 --> 00:11:29.145
  • Listen to me tonight, the bible offers
  • 00:11:29.145 --> 00:11:33.349
  • No hope for a professing christian
  • 00:11:33.349 --> 00:11:38.053
  • Who continues sinning and dies in his rebellion.
  • 00:11:38.053 --> 00:11:42.324
  • There is no hope of eternity.
  • 00:11:42.958 --> 00:11:46.462
  • There is no word of comfort and assurance in the bible
  • 00:11:46.462 --> 00:11:50.399
  • For a professing christian who keeps on sinning,
  • 00:11:50.399 --> 00:11:54.236
  • Keeps on rebelling against god and dies in his rebellion.
  • 00:11:54.236 --> 00:11:59.074
  • And that's why, even if you have to go
  • 00:11:59.074 --> 00:12:01.377
  • To this extreme measure
  • 00:12:01.377 --> 00:12:03.779
  • Of turning someone out of the church,
  • 00:12:03.779 --> 00:12:05.481
  • If the end result is that sinner's repentance,
  • 00:12:05.481 --> 00:12:09.084
  • Then it's well worth the effort.
  • 00:12:09.084 --> 00:12:10.786
  • Remember, what james wrote in james 5 verses 19 to 20.
  • 00:12:10.786 --> 00:12:14.156
  • He said, "my brethren, if any among you
  • 00:12:14.156 --> 00:12:16.659
  • Strays from the truth and one turns him back,
  • 00:12:16.659 --> 00:12:20.429
  • Let him know that he who turns a sinner
  • 00:12:20.429 --> 00:12:23.132
  • From the error of his way will save his soul from death
  • 00:12:23.132 --> 00:12:27.503
  • And will cover a multitude of sins."
  • 00:12:27.503 --> 00:12:31.073
  • Charles finney once said,
  • 00:12:31.073 --> 00:12:32.241
  • "if you see your neighbor's sin
  • 00:12:32.241 --> 00:12:34.043
  • And you pass by and neglect to reprove him,
  • 00:12:34.043 --> 00:12:36.679
  • That is just as cruel as going by his house,
  • 00:12:36.679 --> 00:12:40.549
  • Seeing it on fire and failing to warn him."
  • 00:12:40.549 --> 00:12:43.953
  • The reason we confront christians about their sin
  • 00:12:44.954 --> 00:12:48.190
  • Is to restore their relationship with god.
  • 00:12:48.190 --> 00:12:52.528
  • It's interesting that, apparently,
  • 00:12:52.528 --> 00:12:54.663
  • The corinthians followed this advice.
  • 00:12:54.663 --> 00:12:57.666
  • They put this man out of the church,
  • 00:12:57.666 --> 00:12:59.668
  • He eventually repented
  • 00:12:59.668 --> 00:13:01.470
  • And he was ready to come back into the church.
  • 00:13:01.470 --> 00:13:04.039
  • 2 corinthians 2:6-8 tell us that the corinthians
  • 00:13:04.039 --> 00:13:07.276
  • Were reluctant to allow him to come back.
  • 00:13:07.276 --> 00:13:11.313
  • No, if somebody does repent,
  • 00:13:11.313 --> 00:13:13.682
  • Then we need to welcome them back with open arms.
  • 00:13:13.682 --> 00:13:16.685
  • But there's a second purpose for discipline
  • 00:13:16.685 --> 00:13:18.554
  • That's often overlooked
  • 00:13:18.554 --> 00:13:19.822
  • And that is to the purity of the church.
  • 00:13:19.822 --> 00:13:23.993
  • The reason we go to these drastic steps
  • 00:13:23.993 --> 00:13:26.495
  • Is to maintain the purity of the church.
  • 00:13:26.495 --> 00:13:28.564
  • Look at verse six.
  • 00:13:28.564 --> 00:13:29.798
  • He says, "for your boasting is no good.
  • 00:13:29.798 --> 00:13:32.835
  • Do you not know that a little leaven
  • 00:13:32.835 --> 00:13:35.437
  • Leavens the whole lump of dough?"
  • 00:13:35.437 --> 00:13:39.108
  • Now in the bible, leaven represents influence.
  • 00:13:39.108 --> 00:13:44.446
  • And it's usually an influence for evil.
  • 00:13:45.314 --> 00:13:48.617
  • It only takes a little pinch of leaven
  • 00:13:48.617 --> 00:13:52.254
  • To cause a whole dough, a batch of dough to rise
  • 00:13:52.254 --> 00:13:55.658
  • In the same way it only takes a little bit of sin
  • 00:13:55.658 --> 00:13:58.861
  • To contaminate an entire congregation.
  • 00:13:58.861 --> 00:14:02.131
  • And by the way, that is especially true
  • 00:14:02.131 --> 00:14:04.233
  • When it comes to gossip and bitterness in the church.
  • 00:14:04.233 --> 00:14:07.569
  • Just a little bit of bitterness in the church
  • 00:14:07.569 --> 00:14:11.273
  • Can spread like gangrene throughout the church.
  • 00:14:11.273 --> 00:14:14.243
  • And paul says that's why it needs to be dealt with.
  • 00:14:14.243 --> 00:14:17.313
  • And he says, "a little leaven leavens the whole lump."
  • 00:14:17.313 --> 00:14:19.882
  • It would be like our saying,
  • 00:14:19.882 --> 00:14:21.583
  • One rotten apple spoils the whole barrel.
  • 00:14:21.583 --> 00:14:25.187
  • That's what he's talking about here.
  • 00:14:25.187 --> 00:14:26.922
  • Now paul illustrates that truth
  • 00:14:26.922 --> 00:14:29.591
  • By using an old testament story
  • 00:14:29.591 --> 00:14:33.028
  • That his readers were very familiar with.
  • 00:14:33.028 --> 00:14:35.464
  • The old testament feast of passover
  • 00:14:35.464 --> 00:14:37.866
  • And the feast of unleavened bread.
  • 00:14:37.866 --> 00:14:40.202
  • Remember the story in exodus 12?
  • 00:14:40.202 --> 00:14:42.905
  • It was when pharaoh was holding god's people captive
  • 00:14:42.905 --> 00:14:47.376
  • In egypt and god sent the 10 plagues
  • 00:14:47.376 --> 00:14:49.878
  • In order to convince pharaoh to let his people go.
  • 00:14:49.878 --> 00:14:52.448
  • And remember, the 10th plague was going
  • 00:14:52.448 --> 00:14:54.049
  • To be god passing through egypt
  • 00:14:54.049 --> 00:14:56.485
  • And killing the firstborn of every family.
  • 00:14:56.485 --> 00:14:59.388
  • But god said to the israelites,
  • 00:14:59.388 --> 00:15:01.256
  • "if you'll take the blood of an innocent lamb
  • 00:15:01.256 --> 00:15:03.892
  • And you'll place it on your doorpost,
  • 00:15:03.892 --> 00:15:06.195
  • If i see the blood, i will pass over you in judgment."
  • 00:15:06.195 --> 00:15:10.899
  • And of course, that was a picture of the true lamb of god,
  • 00:15:10.899 --> 00:15:14.303
  • Jesus christ, and what he would do for us.
  • 00:15:14.303 --> 00:15:17.172
  • When we trust in christ as our savior,
  • 00:15:17.172 --> 00:15:19.575
  • When god sees the blood of christ covering our life,
  • 00:15:19.575 --> 00:15:23.112
  • The blood we sing about tonight,
  • 00:15:23.112 --> 00:15:24.813
  • God passes over us in judgment.
  • 00:15:24.813 --> 00:15:28.317
  • Well, when that happened
  • 00:15:28.317 --> 00:15:30.519
  • And when god moved and killed the firstborn
  • 00:15:30.519 --> 00:15:33.455
  • Of every family that didn't have the blood applied,
  • 00:15:33.455 --> 00:15:36.759
  • Of course, one of those killed
  • 00:15:36.759 --> 00:15:38.027
  • Was the firstborn son of pharaoh.
  • 00:15:38.027 --> 00:15:40.229
  • And at that point, he was broken and he said to moses,
  • 00:15:40.229 --> 00:15:43.465
  • "get your people out of here."
  • 00:15:43.465 --> 00:15:45.834
  • And moses knew it was time to go.
  • 00:15:45.834 --> 00:15:48.203
  • So he had the israelites pack up
  • 00:15:48.203 --> 00:15:50.239
  • And leave as quickly as they could.
  • 00:15:50.239 --> 00:15:52.541
  • And in fact, they had to leave so quickly,
  • 00:15:52.541 --> 00:15:54.910
  • Exodus 12 tells us, that they had to leave with their dough.
  • 00:15:54.910 --> 00:15:58.781
  • I'm not talking about their money,
  • 00:15:58.781 --> 00:15:59.815
  • I mean, their actual dough.
  • 00:15:59.815 --> 00:16:01.550
  • They got out of there as quickly as they could
  • 00:16:01.550 --> 00:16:03.685
  • And they didn't even have time to leaven the dough.
  • 00:16:03.685 --> 00:16:06.055
  • That's how quickly they had to move out of egypt.
  • 00:16:06.055 --> 00:16:09.691
  • Well, that began a tradition.
  • 00:16:09.691 --> 00:16:12.594
  • And the tradition was god said,
  • 00:16:12.594 --> 00:16:14.897
  • "every year at this time,
  • 00:16:14.897 --> 00:16:16.999
  • I want you to have a passover meal
  • 00:16:16.999 --> 00:16:19.968
  • To remember what i did for you in egypt that night.
  • 00:16:19.968 --> 00:16:23.772
  • But before you sit down and enjoy the passover lamb,
  • 00:16:23.772 --> 00:16:27.676
  • You're to go through the house
  • 00:16:27.676 --> 00:16:29.378
  • And you're to look for any trace of leaven in the house.
  • 00:16:29.378 --> 00:16:33.182
  • You're to sweep out the leaven
  • 00:16:33.182 --> 00:16:35.517
  • And then you can sit down and eat the meal."
  • 00:16:35.517 --> 00:16:38.120
  • The leaven represented sin.
  • 00:16:38.120 --> 00:16:40.355
  • It represented their of way of life in egypt.
  • 00:16:40.355 --> 00:16:42.891
  • You get the picture?
  • 00:16:42.891 --> 00:16:44.293
  • Now before you sit down and enjoy the passover meal,
  • 00:16:44.293 --> 00:16:46.462
  • Make sure there is no hint of your former way of life.
  • 00:16:46.462 --> 00:16:50.732
  • And so, they would sit down and eat the passover
  • 00:16:50.732 --> 00:16:53.735
  • And that would begin the feast of unleavened bread
  • 00:16:53.735 --> 00:16:56.438
  • That would last for the next week.
  • 00:16:56.438 --> 00:16:58.540
  • Now paul is using that illustration.
  • 00:16:58.540 --> 00:17:01.043
  • Look in verse seven.
  • 00:17:01.043 --> 00:17:02.144
  • He says, "clean out the old leaven
  • 00:17:02.144 --> 00:17:05.114
  • So that you may be a new lump
  • 00:17:05.114 --> 00:17:07.583
  • Just as you are in fact unleavened.
  • 00:17:07.583 --> 00:17:10.185
  • For christ, our passover, has been sacrificed.
  • 00:17:10.185 --> 00:17:15.424
  • And look at verse eight,
  • 00:17:15.924 --> 00:17:17.459
  • "therefore, let us celebrate the feast, not with old leaven,
  • 00:17:17.459 --> 00:17:20.929
  • Nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness,
  • 00:17:20.929 --> 00:17:23.398

  • Burdened by the weight of some secret sin in your life.
  • 00:26:06.855 --> 00:26:10.759
  • Perhaps it's an overpowering addiction,
  • 00:26:10.759 --> 00:26:13.795
  • A dishonest business deal you've been involved in,
  • 00:26:13.795 --> 00:26:16.831
  • Or maybe an inappropriate relationship
  • 00:26:16.831 --> 00:26:18.967
  • Outside your marriage.
  • 00:26:18.967 --> 00:26:20.902
  • First 1 john 1:9 promises, "if we confess our sins,
  • 00:26:20.902 --> 00:26:25.440
  • He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins
  • 00:26:25.440 --> 00:26:29.344
  • And to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."

  • 00:26:47.028 --> 00:26:50.432
  • 2000 years ago, the citizens of corinth
  • 00:26:51.299 --> 00:26:54.703
  • Had the same propensity to sue one another.
  • 00:26:54.703 --> 00:26:59.174
  • Next to chariot races,
  • 00:26:59.174 --> 00:27:00.975
  • Suing people was the favorite spectator sport
  • 00:27:00.975 --> 00:27:04.679
  • In the city of corinth.
  • 00:27:04.679 --> 00:27:07.048
  • And unfortunately, the christians in corinth
  • 00:27:07.048 --> 00:27:10.251
  • Were bringing that love for litigation into the church.
  • 00:27:10.251 --> 00:27:14.989
  • [narrator] set your dvr and join us next time
  • 00:27:14.989 --> 00:27:17.192

  • Here on "pathway to victory."
  • 00:27:20.428 --> 00:27:20.428
